Former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has insisted that Nigeria has comparatively fared better during the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, than what it is currently facing under the All Progressives Congress led by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Alhaji Abubakar who stated this Tuesday when he paid a visit to Akwa Ibom State as part of his tour across the nation to ascertain the state of affairs decried the downward economic situation of the nation.
The former Vice president said the PDP-led government did not only increase the GDP and industrialisation but promoted the growth of the private sector.
He said, “Just compare the economic indices during the PDP and also the APC reign, the growth in GDP and industrialization and other sectors of the economy, we did extremely well and we also promoted the growth of the private sector.”
<a id="more" name="more"></a>
He also applauded Governor Udom Emmanuel -led administration in Akwa Ibom State for the economic development and infrastructural transformation even as he commended previous leaders in the state for laying the foundation for rapid economic and industrial growth.
He said, “Quite a number of things have endeared me to Governor Udom Emmanuel, the infrastructural development in the state, the other sectors of the economy in the state, particularly the industrialization policy of the governor coupled with social sector development healthcare and education. These are very key areas of human development and he has not left them untouched.
“He has made a very remarkable impact that actually impressed me and I want to pay tributes to Governor Victor Attah who laid the foundation of this state today.”
Giving his remarks, Governor Udom Emmanuel, while welcoming the former Vice president and his entourage described him as a detribalized leader who is committed towards the growth and progress of the nation.
Emmanuel regretted that despite the rich natural resources in the State, the State had not received its fair share of the resources.
“A state that sits on 36.5% oil and gas reserves of this nation; let them tell you what the federal government’s presence is, every single dual-carriage way you drive here is done by the state government. Every single structure you see in the state is put up by the state. Outside the Police they posted to me, they have not given me anything, ” the governor said.

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday said over 100,000 people have been killed in the state in the last 12 years contrary to other claims on the numbers of persons killed by Boko Haram insurgents.
According to the governor, 10 per cent of the population of Borno State is unaccounted for as many people in many communities in the state are still nowhere to be found even as government is working towards resettling the communities returning after they had fled their homes at the peak of the crisis.
Professor Zulum made the revelations after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the state house in Abuja where he briefed the President on the activities of terrorists in the Northeast and particularly in Borno State.
He also briefed the President on the successes being recorded especially with the fighters currently submitting to the Nigerian troops.
<a id="more" name="more"></a>
The governor said while some Nigerians are of the opinion that the surrendered Boko Haram fighters be rejected, there is no reason for any community to reject them, adding that they are people living within the communities before the unfortunate incident.
“Those fighters who surrendered should be accepted and treated well and should not be rejected in their communities. That is the only way to show them the difference by loving them because they have repented from their mistakes,” the governor said.
Zulum also told Newsmen that, so far, a total of 2,600 former terrorists and fighters have surrendered to the Nigerian military and are currently in custody of the military.
He said ” Not all of them are criminals. Some of them are also victims, as such the need for communities to understand and welcome the fact that they have realised their shortcomings and are now turning in to be good citizens.”
He explained that many of those who are surrendering to troops are people who were forcefully conscripted and that they had to stay with the terrorists to stay alive.
” Some of them were small children when they were taken to join the terrorists, ” he added.
Zulum told journalists that, he was attacked over five times by the terrorists while moving from one end of Borno State to another end to ensure that he builds confidence on the people, a sacrifice which is also yielding result with terrorists giving up and coming out to submit themselves.
He said his administration will do everything possible to support the surrendered terrorists, adding that government is not contemplating inducing the terrorists in order to have them surrendered but will work to ensure that those who surrender after profiling by the military return to their communities.

The food system in Nigeria is weak and vulnerable to shock, the Federal Government has said.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mustapha Shehuri, disclosed this while speaking at the Feed Nigeria Summit 2021 in Abuja on Monday.
At the summit, which had the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, as well as local and international government officials, Shehuri stated that the agriculture ministry was re-examining the weak link.
Shehuri, who spoke through the Director, Federal Department of Agriculture, Karima Babaginda, said, “There is no doubt that the current Nigeria food system is weak and vulnerable to shock.
<a id="more" name="more"></a>
“The summit, no doubt will assist the ministry to re-examine the weak link with a view to strengthen it for an agricultural system that will work for Nigeria and stabilise the country’s food security.”
He said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was determined to create a functional food system that would guarantee all citizen an unrestricted access to quality and safe food.
Shehuri said the FMARD was carrying out intervention programmes in areas of agricultural livelihood and support, food safety and provision of infrastructure in different ecological areas in order to strengthen the weak food system in Nigeria.
He noted that several empirical reports and findings had indicated that per capital production of cereals, root and tuber crops were on the increase in Nigeria.
“However its sustainability to support the exponential growth in population requires extreme intervention from all major stakeholders,” the minister stated.
He added, “For a sustainable food system, we must rise to overcome challenge of poor quality food supplies, hunger, malnutrition and improper food habit of promoting food wastage. Indeed the food consumption pattern must change to reduce food waste.”
On his part, Nanono confirmed the position of Shehuri, but expressed optimism that the country would address this weakness, as he noted that the government was working hard to halt the importation of sugar in Nigeria in two years.
“It is important to note at this point that our food systems architecture remains weak and vulnerable to shocks. We are, however, committed to continue to work to support key value chain activities,” Nanono stated.
The minister said the value chain activities include input distribution, farm production, processing, distribution and marketing, adding that this would be done by providing better coordination and infrastructural support.
