Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated German Chancellor, Angela Merkel who Sunday, won a fourth consecutive term as German Chancellor. Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union conservative bloc won a 32.5 percent of the total vote cast, down from the 41.5 percent in the 2013 general election.

In a post on his Facebook wall yesterday, the ex-President lauded Merkel’s leadership role in Germany and Europe and wished her success for the next four years.

“Once again, the German people have rewarded Angela Merkel for her leadership in Germany and in Europe by voting her for a fourth term. I congratulate her and her party, the Christian Democratic Union and wish them a very successful fourth term in office.

It is my prayer that her fourth term leads to even greater improvement in the already good relations between Nigeria and Germany,” wrote Dr. Jonathan. While urging women in general and Nigerian women, in particular, to look up to Merkel as a role model, the former President tasked them to get set to take charge in leadership drive across all levels regardless of their calling.

“I urge Nigerian women and women all over the world to see Angela Merkel as role model and get ready to lead in whatever capacity they can,” he stressed.

Merkel, 63, Europe’s longest-serving political leader joins the late Helmet Kohl and Konrad Adanauer, as the only post-war Chancellors to win four national elections.
