NATIONAL Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure has lamented the poor state of orientation camps across the country.

He called for the enhancement of the operations of the youth service for the scheme’s sustainability.

Kazaure particularly called on states and local governments to live up to their statutory obligations to the scheme, particularly in the area of upgrading of orientation camp facilities.

The NYSC boss, who listed poor state of the camps facilities as one of the numerous challenges facing his management, said the increasing population of corps members has overstretched existing facilities at the camps.

Kazaure spoke in Jos yesterday during the scheme’s 2017 Annual Management Conference.

He said: “The increasing population of corps members has already dwindled the resources available to management and so the need has arise for urgent intervention through improved funding.

“Over the last four decades, the NYSC Scheme has made significant contributions to national development in the areas of education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, infrastructure and other sector of the economy.

“Under my leadership, there is improve industrial harmony and staff motivation through robust welfare package, resuscitation of moribund NYSC farm settlement in Bauchi, Kebbi, Oyo and FCT as well as full computerisation of NYSC and biometric registration and clearance

“Since my assumption as the chief executive of the scheme in April 2016, we have continued to build on the successes of previous administration. But in spite of the success so far, a lot still need to be done to take the scheme to the next level, which is why we tagged the 2017 programme: “Enhancing the operations of NYSC through strategic planning.”

“There is obvious need for new policy direction for improved service delivery in the future. As we recount the gains of today, we have to look at the future of the scheme and begging to plan from now so as to operate based on global standard.

Kazaure, however, expressed appreciation with some states and local governments who have shown commitment to the success of the scheme through the upgrade of their orientation camps.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Sonny Tyoden, to declare the conference open, called on management of NYSC to be focused on the vision of the scheme and work towards achieving those goals.
