Governor Wike to be named Grand Patron of Polytechnic students in Nigeria

National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has concluded arrangements to decorate Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike as its Grand Patron.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>The association said the decision to award Governor Wike as the association’s Grand Patron was informed by his transformation of the education sector and others in Rivers State.<br />
<br />
NAPS is the umbrella body of all polytechnics, Monotechnics, colleges of Technology, Agriculture, health and all tertiary institution awarding Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The polytechnic students in a statement issued by their Senate President, Jeremiah Friday Ohomah said, governor Nyesom Wike would be decorated as the Grand Patron during NAPS Senate pre-convention scheduled to hold in Port-Harcourt Polytechnic, Rumuola next month.<br />
<br />
According to Ohomah, “As an association which represents the conscience of the society, we have x-rayed the work of governors of the 36 states in Nigeria with particular reference to physical development and education development especially in areas of technical and Technological education. Our investigations revealed that the Governor of Rivers State, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike stands tall in this regards.<br />
<br />
“The transformation of Ken Saro-wiwa Polytechnic in the last two years has been unprecedented. The establishment of the port-Harcourt polytechnic Rumuola, is a major contribution to the realization of a technologically developed Nigeria state.<br />
<br />
“Also worthy to mention is the massive construction of roads in nearly all Local government areas of Rivers state. The human capital development of the Wike administration is also worthy of mentioning.<br />
<br />
“Consequently during the senate pre -convention of the NAPS scheduled to hold in port- Harcourt polytechnic Rumuola between 11th-13th of May 2017 in Rivers state, Governor Nyesom Wike will be decorated as the GRAND PATRON of the national Association of Polytechnic students (NAPS) in recognition of his responsible and productive leadership dexterity.<br />

“While we congratulate him on this well-deserved honour, we call on the general public and the people of rivers state to join us in celebrating the great performer Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, The Executive Governor of River State”, he said.

Nigerian filmmaker Faraday Okoro’s Proposed Movie “Nigerian Prince” has secured $1million AT&T Grant at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival.<br />

The movie which centers around Nigerian scammers was written and directed by Faraday Okoro and produced by popular filmmaker Biyi Bandele and Oscar Hernandez-Topete.<br />
<br />
The movie was announced the winner after a pitching session tagged “AT&T Presents: Untold Stories” which involved four other filmmakers.<br />

AT&T will provide funding of up to $1 million for Faraday Okoro and Biyi Bandele to create his film, and Tribeca will provide mentorship from seasoned industry professionals.<br />
<br />
In addition, AT&T plans to distribute the winning film across several of its video platforms, including DIRECTV NOW, AT&T’s streaming over-the-top service. Apart from the funding, the movie is also guaranteed a slot at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.

The police on Saturday said they had arrested six suspects in connection with an assassination attempt on Sen. Dino Melaye in his home in Kogi on April 15.<br />

The Force Spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood, told newsmen in Abuja that the arrested suspects included a Kogi local government sole administrator and his orderly.<br />
<br />
Moshood said that items recovered included one Hyundai Ambulance bus allegedly used in conveying the attackers, five AK 47 rifles, One Beretta pistol and two locally made single barrel shot guns.<br />
<br />
Others were 25 expended shells of 7.62 mm ammunition, 13 expended shells of 9mm ammunition and 12 expended shells of gauge cartridge.<br />
<br />
Moshood said that the firearms had been sent for ballistic expert examination, test and analysis at the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department in Lagos.<br />
<br />
He said that following the attack on Melaye, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris swiftly deployed Police Special Tactical Squad (STS) team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.<br />
<br />
According to the police spokesman, the suspects used the telephone of the Sole Administrator’s orderly in planning the failed assassination on Melaye.<br />
<br />
Moshood said one of the suspects had confessed to the crime and admitted to have been sent by the sole administrator.<br />
<br />
“He was arrested with a serious criminal link to other active members of the gang,’’ said the Force spokesman.<br />
<br />
He said efforts were being intensified to arrest other suspects at large, adding that the suspects would be arraigned in court on completion of investigation.

Airing his opinion on the content of the book, Goodluck Jonathan said “I have just read Segun Adeniyi’s new book, ‘Against the Run of Play’ which has so far enjoyed tremendous reviews in the media. “My take on it is that the book as presented contains many distorted claims on the 2015 Presidential election by many of the respondents.<br />

“There will obviously be more books like that on this subject by concerned Nigerians. However, I believe that at the right time, the main characters in the elections including myself will come out with a true account of what transpired either in major interviews or books” The author had revealed that the idea for the book germinated when he decided to research into why it is difficult for incumbent presidents to lose elections in Africa.<br />

He had also stated that events that culminated in the defeat of President Jonathan, made it clear to him that while a credible opposition platform that the All Progressives Congress (APC) represented helped, it was not the main reason why the election went the way it did. “ As I said earlier, the worst appears to be over. We are clawing out of the woods of recession in weeks from now, “ the minister said. Mohammed said that the Buhari administration and collective will of Nigerians had shamed doomsday prediction that our recession could worsen into a depression.<br />

“ I hope, in our various media, we shall begin to focus more on the positive developments in our economy, the growth in agriculture and mineral development, since the NBS last year, let out the secret that the Nigerian economy recorded a negative growth in the first quarter of 2016, “ he said. The minister said that recession was not peculiar to the country. He said that the United States of America had experienced 47 recessions, some regressing into depressions. “ Between 1980 and 2007 alone, the American economy experienced five recessions.<br />

The last one in 2007 was caused by the subprime mortgage crisis and led to the collapse of the US housing bubble,” he said. Mohammed urged the media to stop the blame game and educate Nigerians on the efforts being made to end recession. “ Informing the people that the government is working hard to end the recession will go a long way to give hope to the people. “After all, it is said that ”if you keep hope alive, it will keep you alive” the minister said.

On Sunday April 16th 2017, Joshua thanked his congregants and viewers for their prayers, referring to a previous prophetic message he gave about mounting tensions between the super-power nations.<br />

13 days later in the early hours of Saturday 29th April 2017, North Korea tested another ballistic missile in defiance of the United Nations and pressure from USA and China.<br />

According to reports online, the missile only travelled between 30-40km before exploding mid-air.<br />

The Chairman of the Katsina State Chapter of National Conscience Party, NCP, Abdulmumini Shehu Sani, and a resident of Katsina State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign and attend to his health issues.<br />

Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe would benefit greatly from a move to Arsenal, according to club legend Robert Pires, who added that he thinks the rising star “will sign” for the Gunners.<br />

However, the current Arsenal assistant cautioned that comparisons to Thierry Henry were premature.<br />
Mbappe, 18, is considered to be one of the top, young prospects in world football thanks in large part to his stellar form in Monaco’s run to the Champions League semifinals.<br />

And Pires, who played with Henry on Arsene Wenger’s “Invincibles” teams in the early 2000s, believes that Arsenal is the best place for Mbappe to grow and flourish as a player.<br />

“Mbappe has the potential to play for Arsenal and Wenger is the right manager to manage him,” Pires told Bwin. “Monaco and Arsenal are very similar clubs, so it won’t be much of a transition.<br />
“I do think Arsenal will sign him. The problem is how much.”<br />

But Pires does not believe it’s time to start talking about the teenager measuring up to his former Arsenal teammate Henry.<br />

“The comparison is unnecessary, he’s not ready to be compared to Thierry. Mbappe is a very similar player but to compare the two players would be unfair.<br />

“I hope that Kylian can follow in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, he has the same profile as Thierry — quick, strong and a great finisher — but he’s very young so I would hold off on comparisons just yet.”<br />

Mbappe has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Monaco this season, including five in the Champions League, as the Ligue 1 leaders advanced past Borussia Dortmund in the last eight to set up a semifinal match with Juventus.<br />

“Monaco have a very good chance to win the Champions League,” Pires said. “They are the best team in France and in Europe, because they have the best striker in Europe at the moment, Kylian Mbappe. Yes, we talk about Mbappe and [Radamel] Falcao but they also have Valere Germain and Thomas Lemar. They don’t have one or two players, they have a complete team.”<br />

Price is a major sticking point for Mbappe, with valuations reaching nine figures according to some reports. According to Madu: “His release has opened a new dimension to Biafra struggle which must continue to be anchored on non violence, mutual understanding and unity of purpose.<br />

“As Nnamdi Kanu regained freedom, MASSOB will continue with other progressive groups and individuals to press further for the release of other pro Biafra detainees across Nigeria prisons. “MASSOB as the most prominent pro Biafra group that supports Mazi Nnamdi Kanu believe that there are credible Igbo senators and Jewish religious leaders who can stand for Nnamdi Kanu.<br />

“Standing for Nnamdi Kanu means standing Ndigbo because we still have credible senators which has been shown on Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe who can never be intimidated or subjected to cowardice because of the conditions of the bail granted to Nnamdi Kanu.”<br />

Madu said that MASSOB was not jittery over the stringent bail conditions granted to Kanu because it knew that the people of ‘Biafra’ were capable of dismounting strongholds against the actualization and restoration of the rupulic of Biafra. “The bail conditions established against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal government of Nigeria is a soft landing subtly given to themselves to ease their shame.<br />

The Federal Road Safety Corps has impounded a vehicle used in child trafficking and rescued 17 of the trafficked children in Kaduna State.<br />

The operatives were to arrest the vehicle for overloading and broken windscreen, only to discover that the occupants of the vehicle were suspected child traffickers with some 17 minors.<br />
<br />
In a statement released by the Corps’ Head Media Relations and Strategy, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, he said the vehicle, a Ford Galaxy model with registration number LMU 76 XA, grey color, was travelling from Kano to an undisclosed location on Thursday, April 27, around 1155hrs, when the patrol team asked the driver of the said vehicle to stop.<br />

The driver, however, refused to stop, which led to a chase towards Dutsenma junction, where he was forced to as the traffic light turned red. He was arrested, the vehicle impounded and taken to the FRSC base at No 12 Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna.<br />
<br />
The operatives counted 17 minors and 3 adults (a driver, a woman and one other person), totalling 20 persons in the vehicle. This raised the team lead’s suspicion.<br />
<br />
According to the Corps’ Sector Head of Operations in Kaduna who interviewed the driver, he could not convince the officers about their movement and the destination of the children.<br />
<br />
Kazeem stated that the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, who got a report on the situation immediately directed that the case be reported to the Comptroller of Immigration, Kaduna State, who immediately deployed his personnel to take away the Vehicle and its occupants for further investigation at their Command.<br />
<br />
The matter was subsequently transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for further investigation and necessary action.<br />
<br />
To this end, Oyeyemi who approved of the release of the vehicle to NAPTIP to serve as an exhibit on their request, used the opportunity to stress the need for constant inter-agency collaboration to foster security of lives and properties in the Country.

The US and UK as well as their allies have given conditions for peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict over North Korea’s nuclear threats.<br />

The two countries gave the conditions at a high-level meeting on North Korea, attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 15-Member UN Security Council on Friday in New York.<br />

This was just as North Korea reportedly launched another missile test on Friday as a Security Council’s meeting chaired by the U.S. got underway at the UN.<br />
<br />
<br />
The high-level meeting was chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to end the country’s Presidency of the Council for the Month of April 2017.<br />
<br />
Tillerson said: “For the past 20 years, well-intentioned diplomatic efforts to halt these programs have failed.<br />
<br />
“It is only by first dismantling them that there can be peace, stability, and economic prosperity for all of Northeast Asia.<br />
<br />
“With each successive detonation and missile test, North Korea pushes Northeast Asia and the world closer to instability and broader conflict.<br />
<br />
“The threat of a North Korean nuclear attack on Seoul, or Tokyo, is real.<br />
<br />
“And it is likely only a matter of time before North Korea develops the capability to strike the U.S. mainland.<br />
<br />
“Indeed, the DPRK has repeatedly claimed it plans to conduct such a strike.<br />
<br />
“Given that rhetoric, the United States cannot idly stand by. Nor can other members of this council who are within striking distance of North Korean missiles”.<br />
<br />
The U.S. envoy warned that there was no reason to think that North Korea would change its behaviour under the current multilateral sanctions framework.<br />

“For too long, the international community has been reactive in addressing North Korea. Those days must come to an end.<br />
<br />
“Failing to act now on the most pressing security issue in the world may bring catastrophic consequences.<br />
<br />
“We have said this before and it bears repeating: the policy of strategic patience is over. Additional patience will only mean acceptance of a nuclear North Korea.<br />
<br />
“The more we bid our time, the sooner we will run out of it,” Tillerson warned.<br />
<br />
He added: “Lastly, as we have said before, all options for responding to future provocation must remain on the table.<br />
<br />
“Diplomatic and financial levers of power will be backed up by a willingness to counteract North Korean aggression with military action if necessary”.<br />
<br />
On its part, the UK, through Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, called for a change of approach by the Security Council, towards North Korea.<br />
<br />
“This Council must be united in its demand that the present course cannot continue and Britain is proud today to have joined its allies to lead the enforcement of sanctions and seek a peaceful solution.<br />
<br />
“We urge other partners with direct influence on North Korea to use their leverage to the full, with the aim of easing tensions and ensuring compliance with the expressed will of the UN.”<br />
<br />
The UK called on Russia and China and other Member States to use whatever influence they possess to restrain North Korea and guide its leaders towards a peaceful settlement.<br />
<br />
“Britain stands alongside our allies in making clear that North Korea must obey the UN and halt its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes, disarming in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.<br />
<br />
“Only then can this Council be assured of the peace and security of the region – and only then can the people of North Korea have the chance of a better future.<br />
<br />
“But the catastrophic effects of a North Korean nuclear strike outweigh any economic benefits.<br />
<br />
“We must be willing to face the hard truths and make hard choices right now to prevent disastrous outcomes in the future.<br />
<br />
“For years, North Korea has been dictating the terms of its dangerous course of action; it is time for us to retake control of the situation,” Johnson said.<br />
<br />
Other members of the Security Council that supported U.S. and UK included Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Italy, Sweden and Ukraine.

Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets on Friday successfully destroyed an artillery piece being sneaked into Sambisa forest by insurgents.<br />

Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air force, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.<br />
<br />
Adesanya said the artillery piece was concealed under a tree and sighted by a NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft while on daytime patrol in the Sambisa general area.<br />
<br />
He said that about seven insurgents were also observed to be moving out from under the tree.<br />
<br />
“ The crew on board the ISR platform therefore, immediately called for air strikes by NAF combat platforms.<br />
<br />
“Following the alert, one Alpha Jet and one F-7Ni fighter aircraft were scrambled for air interdiction on the artillery piece.<br />
<br />
“The Alpha Jet and F-7Ni strikes were observed to have hit the target. Thereafter, the Alpha Jet strafed the area with rockets and the location of the artillery piece was completely engulfed in an inferno.<br />
<br />
“Subsequently, Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) footage by a NAF ISR aircraft revealed that the strikes were successful as the artillery piece was neutralised,” Adesanya said.<br />
<br />
Adesanya stated that with the successful attacks, attempts by the remnants of the insurgents to reinforce their capability with the artillery piece was thwarted.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that it was a follow-up to other interdiction missions previously carried out in the Sambisa general area and other suspected terrorists’ hideouts.

According to Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Bezos is less than $5 billion away from becoming the world’s richest person in a bid to overtake Bill Gates. Bezos saw his fortune surpass $80 billion for the first time on Thursday.<br />

As of Wednesday, Dangote was worth $9.91 billion, but climbed to $9.96 billion by the end of trading at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday.<br />
<br />
The stock market gods also smiled on Bezos as Amazon shares added almost $50 after the company projected sales that may beat estimates in the current quarter.<br />
<br />
This added to Amazon’s unbroken 20-year streak of double-digit revenue growth.<br />
<br />
Amazon had first-quarter sales of $35.7 billion and earnings of $1.48 a share, beating Wall Street analyst expectations.<br />
<br />
Bloomberg said Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin added $1.4 billion when shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc. rose as high as $938.18 on news that the smartphone ad business helped Alphabet post revenue of $20.12 billion and net income of $7.73 a share.<br />

Gates added nearly $100 million with the same time frame, as Bezos ousted Warren Buffet, the legendary investor, to the third position on the world rich list.

Olalekan Adetayo, the Punch reporter who was expelled from Aso Rock by President Muhammadu Buhari's CSO Bashir Abubakar, in an interview on Friday explained that he had to beg Abubakar in order not to be killed.<br />

Adetayo was expelled after he was accused of publishing news reports to damage the image of the presidency. Abubakar had in an internal memo said Adetayo apologized for writing the reports.<br />

On Friday, Mr. Adetayo explained that he apologized in order to leave Aso Rock with his life intact.<br />
<br />
“I needed to leave that place, and alive to tell my story,” Mr. Adetayo said. “At a point, he even threatened, saying, ‘If you don’t answer some of the questions I will raise now, you will not go home today.'”<br />

“I begged him,” he added. “Not that I said that the story I wrote was wrong, but for me to get a leverage to leave that place.”<br />

“And it worked.”<br />

But the reporter later said that he didn’t apologise in his written statement to security officers.<br />

“You must have read in his memo that I did not put any apology inside the statement I wrote.<br />

Five soldiers have been killed when a Boko Haram suicide car bomber attacked a military convoy in the Northeast.<br />

The attacker targeted the convoy said to be conducting clearance operations between Yobe and Borno states,even as the Defence headquarters insisted yesterday that there is no ‘resurgence of insurgency’in the North East, particularly in Borno in spite of pockets of attacks and suicide bombings there.<br />

Security sources said the suicide bomber, riding in a van loaded with explosives, rammed into the military convoy.<br />
<br />
A military officer who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorised to speak about the incident,confirmed the incident<br />

The Defence Headquarters, however,reassured Nigerians yesterday that there was no ‘resurgence of insurgency’ in the North East, particularly in Borno in spite of pockets of attacks and suicide bombings in the area.<br />
<br />
The Director Defence Information, Maj-Gen. John Enenche said in Abuja that the military, particularly the Nigerian army had re-strategized to deal with those attacks.<br />
<br />
“The general public has a feeling which I have been made to understand that there seems to be like there is resurgence of the Boko haram activities in the North East, particularly in Borno State,” he said.<br />
<br />
“I stand here this morning to tell you categorically that it is not true.<br />
<br />
“Let me also remind you that the Boko Haram groups, I called them groups because it is not one. They vary in their characteristics and behaviour.<br />
<br />
“They are not professional, they do not know what we armed forces of Nigeria, know.<br />
<br />
“It is not that we have become docile or dormant, no.<br />
<br />
“The apprehension from the public is becoming much from the dossier I get, but I am assuring them that the new tactics adopted by the military in eliminating the terrorists is working.”<br />
<br />
The defence spokesman said some of the terrorists were willingly giving up themselves, but vowed that the die-hard among them would sooner than later meet their waterloo.

The trial of the cousin of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Azibaola Robert, and his wife, Stella, over alleged laundering of $40 million cash, continued on Friday, with all the witnesses called by the Economic and Financial Commission, EFCC, denying knowledge of the couple.<br />

Rather, they admitted transacting business with his firm, Oneplus, which was reportedly awarded the contract for the supply of Strategic Communications kits by the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014.<br />

The witnesses, Mohammed Abdurazak Bello, Confidence Onabu Iwade and Remiginus Ugwu, told Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court Abuja that they neither knew nor did any business with the defendants.<br />

Prosecution Witness 5, Folashade Ibrahim, said she neither knew nor did any business with Robert or Stella and that they were not beneficiaries of the money she disbursed from the accounts of Tunji Adeniyi & Co, a property firm owned and managed by Tunji Adeniyi.<br />
<br />
Under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Gordy Uche, of what she knew Robert and Stella, Ibrahim replied: “No. I don’t even know them. And they are not part of the beneficiaries of the transfers from the account of Tunji & Co,”<br />

In his testimony, PW6, Mohammed Abdulrazak Bello, who is the Managing Director of BDC Safeway Clean Exchange, said: “I don’t know the man, I don’t know the lady,” referring to Aziboala and Stella Robert, “but I have dealt with Oneplus Holdings”.<br />
<br />
Bello added: “The transaction between me and the Bank officials is legal; there is nothing illegal about it.<br />
<br />
“They told me that the bank did not have enough dollar cash and asked me to source dollar from the black market for them. In all we transacted $6.6 million. At times I paid Naira into an account.<br />
<br />
<br />
“All these transactions were handled between Amobi Odum, Obinna AMAECHI and Nnadozie. In my statement I did say I have never met One plus Holdings Nigeria Limited.”<br />
<br />
Also testifying, confidence Iwade, a marketer with Capital Field Energy and Allied Service, admitted: “I don’t know them (referring to Robert and Stella) but my office had had dealing with Oneplus Holdings sometimes in 2014.<br />
<br />
“We had transaction of $2 million, which Oneplus paid into my company’s account and the Naira equivalent paid into Kamarudeen Dahiru’s account. And this is a normal, legal business and which my company has also done with other companies.”<br />
<br />
The Prosecution, led by Sylvanus Tahir, submitted that the EFCC intended to call no fewer than 13 witnesses to prove its case against the defendants, adding that eight had so far been called to testify.<br />
<br />
The statements of the witnesses were admitted by the judge, who adjourned to June 20 and 21.

Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has been effectively ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining a calf injury during Thursday’s Manchester derby.<br />

The Chilean was taken off on a stretcher in the second half of the goalless draw between City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.<br />
<br />
Tests on Friday have highlighted that the goalkeeper has suffered tear measuring around one centimetre in his left calf, ruling him out for three weeks.<br />
<br />
That would have him back in training only very shortly before City’s final game of the Premier League season, against Watford Sunday May 21.<br />
<br />
More tests are scheduled in the coming days but City are resigned to the fact that he will not play again this season.<br />
<br />
It marks the end of a disappointing debut campaign in English football for Bravo.<br />
The 34-year-old has struggled to win around City supporters who were unhappy with Blues boss Pep Guardiola’s decision to let Joe Hart leave on loan.<br />
<br />
Bravo looked shaky at times during his debut, in the first Manchester derby of the season, and was sent off at Barcelona in the Champions League in October, high-profile low points in an otherwise steady start to life at the club.<br />
<br />
But a dramatic dip in form throughout December and into January led to Guardiola dropping the goalkeeper for more than two months.<br />
<br />
Since being reintroduced to the team Bravo has been ironically cheered by a section of the City support whenever he has made a save or a catch.<br />
<br />
Indeed, he was loudly applauded after he successfully claimed a corner on Thursday evening, only to fall to the ground immediately with the injury which means he will not play for the club again until next season.<br />
<br />
As revealed by Goal earlier in April, Bravo has no intention of leaving City this summer, despite the prospect of a new goalkeeper arriving in pre-season, and has rejected offers from across Europe.</div>

Kanu, who was detained for over 18 months, was set free from Kuje Prison, Abuja on Friday evening after meeting conditions for the bail granted him on Tuesday by a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako.<br />

“I am happy that the Federal Government this time listened to the voice of reason.<br />
<br />
“I congratulate Kanu on his release and wish to commend all those who played one role or the other to ensure that he met his tough bail conditions and was actually released,” Obi said in a statement last night by his Media Office.<br />
<br />
The former governor, however, expressed displeasure that the other Biafra activists detained with Nnamdi Kanu continue to languish in prison custody.<br />
<br />
<br />
“I wish to appeal to the Judiciary and the Federal Government to equally consider the other Biafra detainees for bail and release since, to the best of my knowledge, they have never resorted to violence in their agitation”, he said.<br />
<br />
Obi noted that while the release of Kanu will help to calm frayed nerves, tension will likely remain high in the South East and South South geopolitical zones in view of the continued detention of other Biafra activists.<br />
<br />
“As I counselled previously, the Federal Government should engage the Biafra agitators in dialogue. Every agitation in the world is resolved through dialogue,” Obi added.

Anthony Joshua on Friday night claimed he would be driven by a fear of failure when he faces Wladimir Klitschko Saturday night in their £50 million Wembley showdown.<br />

The IBF heavyweight champion who has Nigerian parentage and bears the Yoruba name Oluwafemi, 27, learnt he needed to be stronger after losing to Magomedrasul Majidov, which was when he last cried, and has won every amateur and professional fight since.<br />

“I cried walking back to the changing rooms,” he said. “You don’t think you will cry because you’re a tough man, but it’s just the passion coming out.<br />

“I went back to the gym and did some weights because I knew I needed to be stronger. And here I am today.”<br />

Joshua weighed in 10lbs heavier than Klitschko earlier on Friday, tipping the scales at 17st 12lbs 2oz.<br />

Joshua was introduced into boxing by his cousin Ben Ileyemi and he reminisced of his growing up years.<br />

“Where I have come from will always sit close,” he said. “Me and Ben were talking about it the other day and it’s crazy.<br />

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, on Friday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to emulate some of the leadership qualities of one of his predecessors, Olusegun Obasanjo, in tackling the herdsmen menace across the country.<br />

While fielding questions during an open forum he tagged ‘Terms of Enslavement I: Holy Cows, Green Gods, and Law of Karma,’ Mr. Soyinka said Nigerians have been overloaded with problems arising due to leadership deficit.<br />

“When I talk about the absence of leadership effect, let me give you an instance, when we started the Road Safety (also known as the Federal Road Safety Commission) movement and we began to clash with the military,” said Mr. Soyinka.<br />
<br />
“The military at the time were the greatest killers on the road; they killed one another, they killed themselves, they killed civilians, and if you argue with them on the road you were given the ‘mud’ treatment or leap-frogging. And we took them up.”<br />
<br />
Mr. Soyinka said the first stream of recruits into the FRSC were those who believed in the philosophy and the purpose of the organization.<br />
<br />
“They were taught not to fear any soldier, and they fought the soldiers very often. I have trophies which were seized from soldiers in my house till today,” he said.<br />
<br />
“And Obasanjo was the Head of State when Road Safety began on a national scale. We met one day and he said, ‘Hmmm, Wole, I hear you are fighting my men on the road, if they kill you, don’t come and complain o.’<br />
<br />
“But he also did something, you know he’s not my favourite person but I always like to give credit where credit is due; Obasanjo also sent notices around to the military and said, ‘We set up, we encouraged, and we are backing this Road safety group…. From now, you fight any Road Safety on the street, when they are done with you, whatever the result is, you then come back and you eat military punishment.<br />

“And the assault on Road safety – you know there was the volunteer as well as the uniformed – the assault virtually died on the road. Before that, it was a culture of assaults, they so despised the Road Safety…. anybody touching them, stopping them, disciplining them on the road is an anathema. Obasanjo stopped the assault. Make sure you print that so he can read it and see that I don’t hate him altogether. So that is what is lacking here.<br />

“We have an ex-military leader, all he has to do, at least the first step even before convening any national summit… Pass the word round that any soldier seen molseting a civilian or any herdsman who attacks any civilian will be disciplined in such a way that he will wish he were a farmer.”

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has appeared before the committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the $43million recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.<br />

The Osinbajo-led panel is expected to submit its report within 14 days.<br />

Men of the Lagos State Police Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, have concluded investigation into the death of the Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli, who was found dead in his Apapa residence earlier in the month.<br />

Ikoli was also a member of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement, CADEP.<br />

His ethnic group, Ijaw, the Nigerian Navy authorities, and his family had suspected Ikoli may have been assassinated as he had no cause to kill himself.<br />
<br />
However, Police investigation has shown that the Naval Chief committed suicide.<br />
<br />
A source at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, told the Sun that an interim report on the investigations was submitted by the Lagos Police CID to the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni on Tuesday after which the CP communicated to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on their findings.<br />

According to the report details, Admiral Ikoli committed suicide contrary to earlier speculations by the Navy, family and Ijaw National Congress as well as Ijaw Youths Congress that he was assassinated.<br />
<br />
The report has it that before his death, the Naval Chief had signed for a service pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition for his personal use.<br />
<br />
“Investigations revealed that on the day of the incident, Admiral Ikoli fired two shots into the wall in his apartment.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Neighbours who heard the gunshots immediately called his wife, Hositela Ikoli, who is based in Abuja, and alerted the Western Navy Command.<br />
<br />
“Shortly after the call was made, his wife and a Lieutenant from his Command called him on phone and he picked, spoke to them and assured them that all was well.<br />
<br />
“It was thereafter he pulled the trigger again and shot himself in the head,” the source said.<br />
<br />
Detectives also gathered that Ikoli’s apartment door was locked from behind and there was no sign of any intruder breaking in.<br />
<br />
Police investigation further revealed that only 12 rounds were left in his pistol, which meant that he shot three out of the 15 rounds he signed for.<br />
<br />
His pistol and finger prints had also been sent to the Force Headquarters’ Forensic Department, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos for analysis and comparison.<br />
<br />
“The report showed that the woman confirmed that she was alerted on the day of the incident after the initial two gunshots were heard from his apartment and she called her husband, who picked his mobile phone and assured her there was no problem”, the police source added.
