Naomi Osaka has announced that she is taking an indefinite break from tennis, after her US Open defence ended in a shock defeat.
She suffered a stunning loss to Leylah Fernandez 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Osaka served for the match in the second set, but allowed the 18-year-old storm to an impressive win.
Earlier this year, she had withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon due to mental health issues.

The 23-year-old has now admitted she will not play again for a “while”.
“Basically I feel like I’m at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match. Sorry.

“I feel like for me recently when I win, I don’t feel happy. I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don’t think that’s normal,” Osaka told a press conference.

The Federal Government has shut down telecommunication services in Zamfara as joint forces commence a major general operation.
On Friday, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) directed the providers to promptly comply.
Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman wrote a memo titled “Re: Shutdown of All Telecom Sites in Zamfara State” to the Chief Executive Officers of the firms.
The EVC said the decision would allow relevant security agencies to carry out required activities to curtail the security challenges.

“The pervading security situation in Zamfara State has necessitated an immediate shut down of all telecom services in the state from today, September 3, 2021,” the letter read.
All operators are to shut down all sites in Zamfara and any site(s) in neighbouring states that could provide communication service to the state.
Danbatta added that the order is for two (2) weeks (September 03-17, 2021) in the first instance.
“Your urgent action in this regard is required”, the NCC chief told the companies.
Zamfara is a hotbed of banditry which got out of control in recent years. Criminals kidnap and murder at will, with hundreds of millions paid as ransom.
They usually move about in large numbers with motorcycles, targeting communities, students, farmers, businessmen, government officials and relatives.
The Federal Government had effected a ‘no fly zone’ as part of measures to stop illegal arms and gold trade.

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido has said that Nigeria cannot break up because the elites are united in preserving their advantages over the masses irrespective of any difference.
Addressing a youth gathering who converged in their hundreds, calling on him to vie for the 2023 presidency on the occasion of his 73rd birthday, the former governor noted that Nigeria is too weak to break.
He asked, “Who will break it? The ordinary person in Jigawa or the ordinary person in Sokoto or the ordinary person in Bayelsa? Is it the Igbo vulcanizer or the Yoruba woman selling kerosene by the roadside or the Okada man in Delta?
“They don’t have the capacity to unite because they are burdened by poverty. We have taken away from them their dignity, their self-esteem, their pride and self-worth so that they cannot even organize for the break-up of the country.

“Up there, we (elites) unite. We will never allow Nigeria to break because once it breaks, we will lose. But the common man loses nothing. What is he losing? He is already in hell; he cannot lose anything more than this hell.”
Alhaji Sule Lamido explained that the country is bleeding due to poor governance under the APC-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He added, “Our country is bleeding because there is no purposeful leadership, no justice, no peace, no security all over, only injustice, denial of people’s rights and privileges and above all, the collapse of government institutions.”
Earlier in his remarks, the convener, Comrade Umar Danjani stated that their reasons for pressuring the former Governor to contest the presidency is noting short of the collapse of the country’s social infrastructure.
He opined, “We are confident only Lamido can remedy the situation due to his wealth of experience in the art of governance.”

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC has announced 444 cases of coronavirus in 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
NCDC, while giving update on its verified Facebook page on Saturday morning, said seven patients died due to complications from the dreaded virus.
It noted that Edo State recorded 71 cases followed by Akwa-Ibom 49 cases, Kwara and Oyo had 49 each, while Kaduna recorded 21 cases.
Further details revealed that Ekiti (20), FCT (19), Anambra (17), Delta (16), Kano (16), Bauchi (14), Ogun (11), Bayelsa (9), Benue (9), Cross River (7), Nasarawa (5), Jigawa , Zamfara 2 each and Enugu 1 respectively.

So far, Nigeria has recorded 194,088 cases of the disease since its outbreak in 2020.
The Public Health Agency said that 433 patients were treated, recovered and discharged from isolation centers across the country on Friday while a total of 2,494 death have been recorded.

Nollywood actor and TV reality show host, Chidi Mokeme has hinted at coming back as the host of the next Gulder Ultimate Search Reality Tv show.
The Nigerian Breweries had announced that the reality show would come back with the theme “The Age of Craftsmanship”, after seven years of break.
The actor had anchored the program for two consecutive years since the beginning of the show while the position was succeeded by his colleague, Bob Manuel, and later passed on to him in season 10.

A twenty-one year old student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, in Kwara State, Olaleye Rosheed, on Thursday bagged twelve months jail term over offences bordering on attempted cheating and internet fraud.
He was sentenced by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin.
Olaleye was prosecuted on one-count charge by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The charge sheet read; “That you, Olaleye Rosheed (Christiana Lopez) sometime in January,2021 at Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, pretended to be one Christiana Lopez, a white female with a gmail account christianalopez 105@gmail.com and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 95 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 324 of the same Penal code.”

The defendant pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him in court.
Following his plea, the Counsel to the anti-graft agency, Sesan Ola reviewed the facts of the case through an operative of the commission, who narrated how intelligence led to the arrest of the defendant on July 24,2021.
The witness told the court that several fraudulent messages printed from Olaleye’s email, including the iPhone recovered from him at the point of arrest, were tendered and admitted in evidence.
Delivering judgement, Justice Oyinloye said “I have carefully considered the facts and circumstances of this case, especially the lone count charge, the plea of guilt entered by the defendant, his extra-judicial statements and unchallenged testimonies of the prosecution witness.
“This honorable court holds the view that the prosecution has succeeded in proving its case beyond reasonable doubt.”
“This court finds the defendant guilty of the allegation levelled against him and he is hereby convicted,” the trial judge declared.
After listening to the plea made by the defence counsel, Justice Oyinloye sentenced Olaleye to one year imprisonment with an option of N200,000 fine.
The iPhone recovered from him was also forfeited to the Federal Government.

The Niger Police anti-banditry team has killed a notorious bandits’ informant, Buba Baromi along with three others during a gun battle in Dogon Fadama in Kontagora Local Government Area of the State.
It was gathered that Baromi was gunned down at his hideout in Damba Forest area of the State on Tuesday.
Baromi, along with his group, was taken unawares where he was recuperating from gunshot injuries sustained during previous encounters with security agents.
It was learnt that the anti-banditry team was led to his hideout by local hunters in the area.

A source told our correspondent that while Baromi was killed on the second day of the gun fight, the other members of his gang were killed on the first day by the policemen.
The source also said the deseased was not only an informant to bandits, but was involved in leading them to targeted areas to attack and abduct people.
“He led bandits to rustle cattle and attack communities at Dogon Fadama. During those attacks, many innocent lives were lost,” the source said.
Baromi, it was also learnt, was responsible for the attacks unleashed on communities at Dogon Fadama in the middle of last month.
It was further gathered that it was during one of the encounters with the security team that the deseased informant sustained a gunshot wound and took off to his hideout in the Forest, where he was receiving treatment.
His corpse has been deposited in the hospital in Kontagora area of the state.
Efforts to reach the State Police command through the Public Relations Officer, PRO, DSP Wasiu Abiodun failed.

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has reiterated his membership and loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that the party remains the choice of the people of the State.
Governor Ikpeazu harped on the need for the strengthening of the party in various wards in the Local Government Areas of the state, pointing out that no politician excels without the political wards.
The Abia Chief Executive was speaking while hosting the PDP meeting of Obingwa Ward 7 ( his immediate Ward) at Umuobiakwa Village in Obingwa local government area of the State.
He stated that anyone who excels in politics must be approved and supported by his political ward and urged the stakeholders to always hold the party ward meetings at regular intervals.

Ikpeazu emphasized that there was need for the party members at the ward level to reorganize themselves and get fortified at polling unit levels.
The Governor tasked party leaders at the ward levels to ensure that democracy takes solid roots at the polling Units, especially now that the registration of voters has commenced again.
He urged all eligible voters who are yet to register to do so immediately.
Also in their separate speeches at the PDP meeting, the PDP stakeholders’ Chairman of the Obingwa Ward, Chief Rowland Nwakanma and a party chieftain, Chief Isaac Ogbonna thanked Governor Ikpeazu for hosting the Ward meeting and commended him for his giant strides in the State.
The PDP stalwarts assured that they would sustain the monthly meeting as it would strengthen the party in the ward.
They called on party members and Abians in general to ensure they get registered in the ongoing INEC online registration excercise.
Earlier during the meeting, Mr. Ahamefule Egbulefu, the Obingwa Ward 7 chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party disclosed that the party was making frantic efforts in encouraging people to key into the INEC registration exercise.
He appreciated Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for kickstarting the hosting of the Ward meetings towards strengthening it for future and greater electoral exploits.

Aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, on Thursday, stormed the South-East zonal office of the party protesting the non-invitation of some stakeholders to the party’s meeting.
It was gathered that the meeting was attended by selected chieftains of the party from the five South-East States.
However, the Enugu State Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, Dr. Ben Nwoye and other Chieftains of the party were not invited to the meeting.
Those not invited include the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, a major financier of APC, Emperor Baywood Ibe, Enugu state Governorship flag bearer of the party in 2015, Chief Okey Ezea, among others.

Irked by the development, some of the party members stormed the meeting venue accusing a former Senate President and a chieftain of the party in the State,Chief Ken Nnamani of factionalizing the APC in Enugu State.
Nnamani, who is the representative of the South-East in the APC National Caretaker Committee is currently Mr. Chikwado Chukwunta as Enugu State caretaker committee chairman of the party.
Some of the placards displayed by the protesters read: “Ben Nwoye is the only authentic state caretaker committee chairman we have”, “Ken Nnamani leave Enugu APC alone”, Ken Nnamani 25 percent negotiator go back to PDP”, “Ken Nnamani, a PDP in the night, APC in the day.”
The protesters vowed to take their complaints against Ken Nnamani to the highest authority of the party, alleging that he had done more harm to the party in Enugu State than good.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has said the federal government will soon make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for civil servants.
Mustapha disclosed this during a meeting of the Health Commissioners Forum on Thursday in Abuja.
He explained that the government wants civil servants to be vaccinated, as they represent Nigeria abroad sometimes.
The SGF, who is also the chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC), further noted that some countries have banned unvaccinated persons is one of the reasons civil servants should embrace vaccination.

“You should, in the course of this meeting, deliberate on the challenges caused by vaccine hesitancy all over the country. It is expected that you will come with policy alternatives as solutions.
“Let me state, however, that the federal government shall, very shortly, unveil its decision on mandatory vaccination for every employee in its service.
“One of the reasons why we want to do that with the federal civil service is because they will be travelling on behalf of the nation.
“Assuming the American government said, ‘you can’t come into their country unless you’re vaccinated’, you have to be vaccinated.
“It’s a sequential thing and we are taking one step at a time, because we realise we don’t have sufficient vaccines in the country at the moment,” Mustapha said.

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has reacted to the appointment of the head of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu as a top official.
Ihekweazu was appointed by WHO as its Assistant Director-General for Health Emergency Intelligence.
The NCDC DG is set to resume November 1 and will lead the work on strengthening pandemic and epidemic intelligence globally.
Ihekweazu will oversee the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin, Germany.

The Adamawa born had claimed she was in a relationship outside the house and that her boyfriend had warned that the show will be a threat to their relationship
She also said she likes Cross and maintained that Jaypaul was like a friend to her.

However, Cross had on Wednesday lamented that Saskay has so far failed to reciprocate her feelings towards him.
He had said he would stop talking to her if he finds out she’s fake.

It’s, however, not certain if they are now officially a couple.

Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice-President of Nigeria, has condemned the abduction of students of Government secondary schools in Kaya, Zamfara State.
It was reported that gunmen suspected to be bandits on Wednesday attacked a Secondary School in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State and abducted 73 students.
Mohammed Shehu, Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that the attack was carried out on the school at about 11:22am by a large number of bandits.
Atiku on Twitter said it is now time to have a School Protection Standby Unit deployed exclusively to protect schools in areas prone to attacks.

”I am saddened by reports of yet another abduction of students in Zamfara. For a region that’s playing catch-up in the critical area of education, this continued assault on the bedrock of our development is not acceptable.
”Perhaps the time has come to have a School Protection Standby Unit deployed exclusively to protect schools in areas prone to these attacks. If we don’t take preemptive actions, I fear that education in the already disadvantaged regions may suffer irreversible losses.
”Meanwhile, I hope that no effort will be spared for a speedy recovery of the students.”

Nigerian singer, Iyanya, has been appointed the Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Entertainment to the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade.
The singer made the announcement in a post via his Instagram account on Wednesday night.
He also thanked the Governor for finding him worthy to handle such position, adding that he will do his best and carryout his duties diligently.
“It’s forward ever and backward never. I have been appointed the Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Entertainment to the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade.

President Muhammadu Buhari has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, of stockpiling weapons across Nigeria.
Buhari, who spoke through his mouthpiece, Garba Shehu, said IPOB members killed security agents and set government facilities in the Southeast ablaze.
He stated this in response to claims by the Amnesty International on human rights violation in the Southeast.
Shehu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, lamented that Amnesty International was defending IPOB which is a terrorist group.

He accused Amnesty International of backing a terrorist organisation against victims of IPOB.
The statement titled: “Why Amnesty entreaties should be ignored”, reads partly: “Amnesty International’s latest salvo at Nigeria is but more of the same.
“Again, they have decided to side with terrorists, before the liberty of those they injure, displace and murder.
“Parroting the line of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, a proscribed terror organisation, they work to legitimise its cause to Western audiences.
“This puts them in bad company. IPOB murder Nigerian citizens. They kill police officers and military personnel and set government property on fire.
“Now, they have amassed a substantial stockpile of weapons and bombs across the country.
“Were this group in a western country, you would not expect to hear Amnesty’s full-throated defence of their actions.”
IPOB’s call for the breakup of Nigeria had led to some members of the group allegedly resorting to civil disobedience.
Lately, attacks on security agents and facilities in the Southeast has been linked to IPOB and its militia arm, the Eastern Security Network, ESN.
Despite the connection, IPOB had severally denied any claims of its members attacking security agents and facilities in the Southeast.
IPOB had insisted that its members rely on peaceful approach in the push for Biafra.

Embattled freedom fighter, Sunday Igboho has insisted on actualizing Yoruba nation.
Igboho explained that Benin Republic enjoys more stable electricity than Nigeria, hence the need to actualize Yoruba nation.
The self-acclaimed freedom fighter disclosed this in a message made public by his spokesman, Olayomi Koiki.
Koiki said Igboho believes soon Nigeria would no longer exist as Yoruba nation would be actualized.

In a statement, Koiki said: “I received a message from Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho via his lawyer from Benin Republic, Olusegun Falola that he stands on his belief, self-determination for the Yoruba Nation, because there’s nothing like Nigeria again for him.
“He believes as a Yoruba man and the indigenous person of the land that it’s time for Yorubas to stand on their own as a Nation.
“He said we should take a look at Benin Republic enjoying steady electricity supply. That’s what we desire in the Yoruba Nation we have been agitating for and we will get there very soon. He also reiterated that the Yoruba Nation is now; there is no going back.”
Igboho is currently locked up in Benin Republic.
He was recently arrested in Cotonou while trying to travel to Germany.
The Yoruba nation agitator fled Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services, DSS, following the alleged discovery of weapons in his Ibadan residence.
He, however, denied owning the weapons found in his house, stressing that they were planted there.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and other members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Caretaker/ Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC have been sacked.
A Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba, Wednesday, restrained the Governor and the others from parading themselves as Chairman and members of the APC CECPC until the determination of a substantive suit before the court.
Justice Onome Marshal Umukoro, who presided over the matter, also stopped the Party’s scheduled LG Congress in Delta State slated for September 4, 2021.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to question Senator George Akume over killings in Benue State.
PDP made the call in a statement on Tuesday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.
The statement was titled; “Benue killings: PDP charges DSS To investigate Akume, asks Akume to explain roles in Benue violence” 
The party also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the former Benue governor over embezzled billions while he was governor.

PDP condemned Akume’s attack on Ortom describing it as an assault on the entire people of Benue State.
“This attack on Governor Ortom is an unpardonable assault on the generality of Benue people, particularly, the victims of the bloody attacks in the state, the statement read in part.
“The PDP describes Senator Akume’s call for a state of emergency in Benue as thoughtless, reckless and absolutely reprehensible.”
Akume had at a press conference in Abuja on Monday called for a state of emergency in Benue over high level of insecurity which the PDP frowned at.

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has stated that there is a great need to invest more in research and development in traditional medicine.
He said this would contribute to harnessing homegrown solutions to improve the well being of people in all parts of the world.
This is as the Ooni has called on Nigerians to join in the promotion of African traditional medicine, adding that the herbs and roots are of unbeatable efficacy globally.
Addressing newsmen during a world press conference in commemoration of the annual African Traditional Medicine Day, in Ile-Ife on Tuesday, the Ooni Ogunwusi described the African traditional medicine as a major inheritance of the black people, capable of solving all medical, spiritual and other problems.

The monarch revealed that major pharmaceutical companies have produced herbal remedies and are looking for new active ingredients.
The traditional ruler hinted that having the right partnership and investments, African traditional medicines would find broader global markets even as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other multilateral organisations are supporting capacity development in the traditional medicine sector and the development of local manufacturing.
He revealed that the progress achieved in the second decade of African traditional medicine include development of policy framework in eight African countries, community mobilisation aimed at raising awareness on the value of traditional medicine and building capacities of researchers, traditional health practitioners and regulatory authorities, through training in partnership with WHO and Centre for Disease Control.
In his words, “in 2020, a regional expert advisory committee for COVID-19 was launched. The objective was to accelerate the pace of research by supporting countries to collaborate on clinical trials of traditional medicine in line with international standards.”
The Ooni also revealed that as a custodian of African tradition, he responded to the COVID-19 preventive measures by building locally fabricated fumigators which used the fogging method of dispensing disinfectant to disinfect the environment.
“Recently, as part of my COVID-19 response, promising traditional therapies have emerged and are still emerging. The Ministry of Health through NAFDAC has approved over 40 herbal products for the management of symptoms of COVID-19 and immune boosters.
“Traditional health practitioners are at the forefront in COVID-19 preventive measures, management of symptoms of COVID-19 and referral of patients for timely care. With COVID-19, there has been improved awareness of the values of traditional medicine.
“In addition, I produced herbal remedies to boost immunity, manage symptoms of viral infections and detoxify the body. These herbal drugs have been tried and tested and are among the 40 drugs registered by NAFDAC in 2020,” he stated.
On the level of success recorded through his advocacy over the years, Ooni Ogunwusi lauded the Federal Government for approving the Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Bill 2020 for onward transmission to the National Assembly and its speedy passage to law.
“We are waiting for the last process of making the important bill which has scaled through the first and second reading in the National Assembly a law in Nigeria for the betterment of all,” he disclosed.
The African Traditional Medicine Day is commemorated annually on the 31st of August.

The Federal Government has admonished political, religious leaders and opinion moulders to “stop spewing incendiary rhetoric capable of setting the country ablaze”.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the admonition while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Sal Island, Cape Verde.
The minister is in Cape Verde to attend the 64th Conference of the UN World Tourism Organisation Commission for Africa and the Second Edition of the UNWTO Global Tourism Investment Forum.
Speaking on the sideline of the global events, the minister also cautioned the media to abide by broadcast codes and other regulations guiding them.

“In the last few weeks, the country has been awash, especially from the broadcast media, with very incendiary rhetoric which has created a sort of panic in Nigeria.
“The incendiary rhetoric that comes from political, religious leaders and some opinion moulders have the capacity to set the country on fire.
“This is because the rhetoric is pitting one ethnic group and religion against the other and overheating the polity. 
“Our serious counsel to stakeholders is that they should understand and remember that leadership comes with a lot of responsibilities, tone down the hateful rhetoric because they are harmful to the country
“They should remember that every war is preceded by these kinds of mindless rhetoric, especially when it comes from otherwise responsible people who the people have the tendency to take seriously,” he said.
The minister recalled the incident in Rwanda where a radio station and one extremist magazine set the stage for the genocide that killed more than 800,000 people in 1994.
“We agree that there are challenges but the government is doing its best in addressing insecurity, banditry, insurrections, and fixing the economy.
“What one expected from these leaders at this trying period is support and encouragement.
“It is, however, quite disturbing that they have thrown caution to the winds and it is no longer about leadership and maturity but about who can say something that can break this country.
“Certain words that we were afraid of using before such as genocide and ethnic cleansing, are now taking over the media waves.
“That is why it is important to call everybody to order to appeal to their sense of patriotism that they should understand that because there is a country called Nigeria, that is why they are leaders.
“If what they are praying for happens, they will no longer be leaders but servants in other countries,’’ he said.

Popular Nigerian OAP, Oladotun Ojuolape, known as Dotun has reacted to the shocking revelation by Ajeboh Dominic, the husband of BBnaija housemate, Tega, about his marriage.
It was earlier reported that Ajeboh in a post on Instagram said he cheated on his wife on their matrimonial bed, presumably in a bid to justify her actions so far in the BBNaija house.

The Police Command in Abia state said it arrested one Mrs. Zazi David for pouring her 10-year-old maid identified as Ifunanya, hot water mixed with pepper.
The command’s spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident to newsmen said the suspect also forced the girl, to drink the hot, peppery mixture because she broke a plate.
According to him, the suspect had abused the girl on several occasions, leaving her with visible cane and burn marks on her body.
He further noted that the suspect was eventually exposed after this recent incident which left the young girl with burns on her lips, shoulders, and on her back.

“Afraid that the girl may die or develop an infection, the suspect took the girl to a nearby chemist who advised her to take the girl to a hospital.
“When she refused, the chemist raised alarm exposing the suspect which eventually led to her arrest,” he added.
Ogbonna assured that the suspect will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the investigation.

The Plateau State main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said governor Simon Bako Lalong does not need the control of security agencies to curb killings in the State.
The party’s spokesman, Emmanuel Go’or in a statement credited to the state Acting Chairman of APC, Enoch Fanmak, said that governor Lalong had done enough to stop killings in the state but for lack of direct control of the security agencies.
Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Tuesday, he said, “if the weekly harvest of dead bodies and invaded communities are the marks of Governor Lalong’s best, then he was never ready for governance.
“Even now, he is leaning on a tottering fence as Mr Governor is simply enamored by the glamour of his office and unhealthily distracted by chores outside the state in the name of chairmanship of Northern Governors’ Forum.”

Popular Nigerian rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has suggested that the Federal Government is fueling the security challenge in the country.
Adeyanju suggested that the Federal government is supporting bandits, killer herders, and Boko Haram in their clandestine activities.
The rights activist explained that these criminals were not more powerful than the Nigerian security agencies but support from government has kept them afloat.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has announced 626 cases of coronavirus in nine states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
NCDC, while giving update on its verified Facebook page on Wednesday morning, said fourteen patients died due to complications from the dreaded virus.
It notes that Lagos State recorded 334 cases, followed by Rivers with 134 cases.
Further details revealed that Oyo reported 60, FCT, 41, Osun, 20, Plateau, 14, while Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara and Benue had nine, seven, six and one cases respectively.

So far, Nigeria has recorded 192,431 cases of the disease since its outbreak in 2020.
No fewer than 178,759 patients have been successfully treated and discharged, with a total of 2,288 death recorded.

Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri has reacted to the recent request made to President Muhammadu Buhari by Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, over security issues in the country.
It was reported that the Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, had urged the Federal Government to urgently put an end to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and the crisis between farmers and herders in Nigeria.
Afenifere said these challenges can be stopped through state policing.
This was part of the resolutions reached by Afenifere during a meeting presided over by the body’s leader, Ayo Adebanjo on Tuesday in Ogun State.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Afenifere’s spokesman, Jare Ajayi, the body urged Nigerians to defend themselves against bandits.
Reacting, Omokri in a post via his Twitter account on Wednesday said he was so disappointed, adding that it’s a huge disgrace for Afenifere to be making such plea to the President.
He further noted that Kano didn’t ask anyone before creating hisbah, adding that if Buhari couldn’t stop that, he has no right to stop state police.

Jordan Henderson has signed a contract extension with Liverpool FC, the club announced on their website on Tuesday.
“The captain put pen to paper on the deal at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday, ensuring his 10-year spell with the club will be prolonged into the years to come,” the club said.
After signing the contract, Henderson told the club’s website, “I’m obviously very honoured and proud to continue the journey I’ve already been on here.
“It’s amazing to finally get it done and just concentrate on looking forward and what the future may hold.

“I’m in a different place of course, as a player and as a person, from when I first walked in. I’ve learned and grown a lot over my time here, and I’ve got to thank a lot of people for that.
“I’ve loved every minute of it, even when I look back at the tough times, I was still enjoying being a part of this football club. The longer I can do that, the better for me really. I want to be here as long as possible, I’ve always said that.
“To continue this journey is incredible for me and my family, and I hope the fans and the club feel the same way.”
Henderson who moved to Liverpool from Sunderland has spent 10 years with the Reds. He has had 394 appearances and scored 30 goals for the club during a tenure that saw him collect five winner’s medals.
The 31-year-old has helped the club win the League Cup, Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

The police command in Jigawa, has arrested six students, for allegedly entering a man’s house and forcefully barbing his head.
The command Public Relations Officer, ASP Lawan Shiisu, said this in a statement in Dutse on Tuesday.
Shiisu said the suspects were arrested on Aug. 27, after one Ibrahim Sambo of Yalwawa area of Dutse, reported to the police that they had on Aug. 20, illegally entered his house at about 1 a.m. and forcefully barbed his head.
He said that the complainant alleged that he became sick two days after the incident.

“On Aug. 27, at about 1600hrs, one Ibrahim Sambo of Yalwawa quarters of Dutse, reported that on Aug. 20, at about 1000hrs, some students of the Federal University Dutse and Jigawa Polytechnic, Dutse, entered his house, restrained him and forcefully barbed his hair and left.
“And after two days, his health started failing and he became sick,” Shiisu said.
The spokesperson added that upon receipt of the complaint, police detectives swung into action and arrested the six students aged between 18 and 19 in connection with the offence.
“The suspects who confessed to the crime, will be charged to court upon completion of investigation,” he said.
Shiisu added that the police have launched a manhunt for the arrest of four other suspects who were at large.

Willian has apologised to Arsenal fans for not living up to their expectation at the club.
The Brazilian tore up his contract at the Emirates Stadium and now set to leave the club.
In a lengthy statement after his exit was confirmed by Arsenal, the Brazil international apologised for his disappointing one-year spell.
The Brazilian still had two years remaining on his £200k-a-week contract, but decided to forgo it as he rejoins boyhood team Corinthians.

The Brazil international also had a message for those who think he joined Arsenal for the sake of money.
Willian scored just one goal for Arsenal having arrived at the Emirates on a free transfer from Chelsea back in August 2020.
“I would like to thank Arsenal for the opportunity they have given to me and for the warm welcome received by everybody at the club,’ Willian said.
“Unfortunately, things on the pitch didn’t go the way we had all planned and hoped. I received a lot of criticism especially from some members of the press that I had come here for financial reasons… I hope my actions today explain to those people and they now understand that was not the case.
“I hope it teaches some people that they should not be so quick to pass judgement and create bad environments to make themselves important even though I accept that’s part of the game.
“All my career, I have done everything to be the best I can be. I always want to win and I find it hard to accept not doing so. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for me at Arsenal and I am sorry about that.
“I came to England in 2013 and I have enjoyed every minute of my time here. I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way to play in this wonderful league that is full of heart and spirit.
“To the Arsenal fans, I am sorry we never got to meet properly due to the pandemic but I know your desire for success and your support for the club is incredible; so I wish you all the best for the future because you deserve it.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has selected Fintech company, Bitt Inc., as the Technical Partner for digital currency, eNaira.
eNaira is expected to be unveiled before the end of 2021.
Governor Godwin Emefiele said the benefits of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) include increased cross-border trade, accelerated financial inclusion, cheaper and faster remittance inflows.
Others are easier social interventions, improvements in monetary policy effectiveness, payment systems efficiency, and tax collection.

CBN Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi said Project Giant, as the Nigerian CBDC pilot is known, has been a long and thorough process.
The spokesman recalled that the bank decided to digitize the Naira in 2017, following extensive research and explorations.
He said due to the rise in the use of digital payments and the acceptance of digital economy, the CBN followed a global trend.
More than 85 percent of Central Banks are now considering adopting digital currencies in their countries, Nwanisobi noted.
“The CBN’s selection of Bitt Inc, from among highly competitive bidders, was hinged on the company’s technological competence, efficiency, platform security, interoperability, and implementation experience”, he said.
The firm was key to the development and launch of the CBDC pilot of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) in April 2021.

The withdrawal of U.S Military signifies the end of 20 years of war that left the Islamic militia stronger than it was in 2001.
Shaky video footage distributed by the Taliban showed fighters entering the airport after the last U.S. troops took off a minute before midnight, marking the end of a hasty and humiliating exit for Washington and its NATO allies.

Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo has said Nigerian leaders must be ready to risk their popularity in order to promote peace in the country.
Osinbajo stated this on Monday, while receiving a delegation of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC).
He said leaders must understand the value of non-violent communication, in ensuring that conflicts do not escalate.
The vice-president advised leaders to emulate former South Africa president, Nelson Mandela and Abdullahi Abubakar, a cleric who saved over 200 Christians during a religious crisis in Plateau State in 2018.

“Those sacrifices, even in what you say, how you say it, and then sacrifices also in the acknowledgment of whatever people are saying and the willingness to accept.
“It is very important that we don’t diminish the importance of language and respectful non-violent communication so that we are able to keep our discussions at a level that ensures that we don’t degenerate too quickly to violence.
“We can all talk nicely and say the right things, but unless people are prepared to make some concessions which may cost them popularity within their own group, we cannot move forward.
“These are stories of people who are not only political or religious leaders but just ordinary people, doing the right thing. Unless we are prepared to not just talk about it but to make an open display, first of all, of those who are doing the right things.
“But more importantly, challenging our leaders to say the right things and to be prepared to risk some popularity in order to do so, then we will just be wasting a lot of time,” Osinbajo said, according to a statement by Laolu Akande, his media aide.

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has told President Muhammadu Buhari that the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, should rather be praised and possibly rewarded with one of the nation’s highest honours for speaking and standing for social justice and for a decisive, law based and sincere counter-terror war.
The group called out Garba Shehu, the President’s spokesman for displaying gross disrespect by picking up petty quarrels with the Benue State’s helmsman.
HURIWA also said that the threat by Buhari to deal with perpetrators of violence in Plateau State is unreliable because the President has been making similar verbal threats that turned out to be empty propaganda because till now, not one of the armed terrorists masquerading as Fulani herdsmen have been prosecuted successfully.
The group also asked the president to direct the Inspector General of Police to order the immediate production of the leader of the Fulani group that made claims to have attempted to kill the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom months back.

HURIWA carpeted the Nigerian Police and the Buhari-led government for refusing to arrest the Fulani leader even after he had made media claim of responsibility, adding that this creates the impression that someone up there in the current administration actually wants the Benue State governor dead only because he speaks and stands for justice.
HURIWA recalled that a Fulani group identified as Fulani Nationality Movement, FUNAM, had claimed responsibility for the attack on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.
FUNAM said it planned to kill Ortom on Saturday, but its plan suffered a setback due to a slight communication error.
HURIWA recalled that recently, armed herdsmen had attacked Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on his farm at Tyo-mu village, along Makurdi – Gboko road.
The governor claimed that MACBAN had concluded plans to assassinate him over his position on open grazing.
Ortom alleged that the Myetti Allah took the decision to eliminate him during a meeting they organised recently in Yola.
HURIWA also condemned the persistent attacks of Ortom in the media by Shehu who has displayed unambiguous allegiance and loyalty not to the Federal Republic of Nigeria but to his Fulani Ethnic nationality.
Shehu equally alleged that Ortom was behind the spike in security breaches.
HURIWA, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the minister of special duties and former Benue State governor Mr. George Akume was wrong to have demanded apology from Ortom to Buhari.
HURIWA further carpeted the minister for his show of hypocrisy, adding that it is unimaginable that he expects his state governor to apologise for demanding an end to the well coordinated armed attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen in Benue State.
HURIWA then asked George Akume how he wants someone to apologise for speaking out for social justice and the just enforcement of the counter terror laws by the Federal government of Nigeria or has Nigeria become the Federal Republic of FULANIS?

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari over the activities of bandits.
Khalid, who is the Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque, said God will punish Buhari if he fails to return Nigeria to the state he met it.
The cleric noted that Nigeria had no challenge of banditry before Buhari assumed power.
Addressing Islamic worshippers during his sermon, the Imam vowed that Allah would punish Buhari if he fails to tackle bandits.

In a viral video, the Imam said, “Go and tell the President that under his government, some group of people are issuing threats to local communities, demanding that they should be paid some amounts of money or face attack.
“And they would gather the money and announce publicly on the BBC that they (bandits) would be paid this Friday [to avoid attack].
“Tell the president that there is a country we pay allegiance to, and there is a part of the country we do not know, which is governed by bandits.
“The president should either return the country as one nation where bandits are not killing people anyhow — just the way he took over, or Allah (God) will deal with him.”
Lately, the activities of banditry has been on the rise in the country.
Schools, worship centres have been the major targets of bandits in the Northern part of the country.
Several students and religious leaders have been abducted and killed by these bandits, while heavy ransoms have been paid to secure the release of others.

Following eviction of three housemates, Big Brother Naija, BBNaija season 6 housemate, Queen has said her confidence level in the show has been elevated.
Queen was saved from eviction last night after her fans voted tremendously for her.
