Benue faults EFCC’s N23 Billion claim

<br /> <br /> The Benue State Government on Saturday faulted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) over its claim that over N23billion in state accounts was withdrawn and diverted.<br /> <br /> It asked the anti-graft agency to stop publishing figures without stating how impropriety has been established.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The state government accused EFCC of now acting like a strike squad of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and boasted that any genuine, fair, just and equitable investigation would surely exonerate Governor Samuel Ortom.<br /> <br /> The government disclosed these in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Terver Akase.<br /> <br /> He said: “After succumbing to nationwide condemnation of its illegal freezing of Benue State Government accounts, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has resorted to yet another shameful act in its desperation to cripple governance in the state.<br /> <br /> “The anti-graft agency’s latest move is the bandying of figures in national dailies claiming that such figures are those of transactions in the accounts owned by the Benue State Government.<br /> <br /> “In The Nation Newspaper of Saturday, August 11, 2018, EFCC claimed among other things that a staff of the Benue State Government whose name it gave as ‘Agbo Amada’ has been sacked ‘to avoid making him available for interrogation.’<br /> <br /> “The Commission could not disclose where the said government staff worked before he was sacked obviously because such a person does not exist.”<br /> <br /> The state government challenged the EFCC to release more details if it has its facts right.

They will need 73 Senators to lawfully remove Dr. Saraki and they will never get that in the present eight Senate.<br /> <br /> “The argument of APC that the Senate President must come from a majority party; that the Senate Presidency is their crown and National Assembly is their palace is only supported by ignorance and dangerous delusion.<br /> <br /> “First, the issue of which party is in the majority will only be resolved when the Senate resume. Two, Section 50 (1) (a) of the Constitution is clear that any Senator can be elected as Senate President. If the only thing left of the APC change agenda is to change the Senate President we can only wish them good luck.<br /> <br /> “Perhaps, Mr. Oshiomhole needs to be better educated about our parliamentary history when he stated that ‘for the first time in parliamentary history in Nigeria, we had a situation where the APC had majority of senators and went on to elect a PDP as Deputy Senate President.<br /> <br /> “We hereby assure this garrulous, tactless and reckless APC chairman that a million of Adams Oshiomhole cannot remove Saraki as Senate President.”

Zedekiah Orogbemi, the court’s prosecutor who also confirmed the incident to NAN said that he was shocked when he got the news.<br /> <br /> Orogbemi, who described the late Magistrate as a “thorough bred lawyer and a good man’’ prayed for the repose of his soul.<br /> <br /> “I was shocked when the news broke and up till now, I still cannot believe that Ayeomoni is gone but what can we do than to pray for the repose of his soul.<br /> <br /> “I also condole with his family and pray that God should give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,’’ he said.<br /> <br /> NAN reports that the 59 year-old Magistrate, who was due for retirement next year, left behind his wife and two other children.<br /> <br /> (NAN)

We believe that with this `marriage’ today we are taking Nigeria to a great height,” he said.<br /> <br /> On his part, Elekima said the merger was between a political party with strong base in the South and another that is strong in the northern part of the country.<br /> <br /> “This will transform into capacity to win elections. The mere fact that the two accounts have been re-opened does not mean that a crime was not committed,” Governor Wike reportedly told journalists, Thursday, in Port Harcourt, according to a Government House press statement.<br /> <br /> “When you freeze the account of the State Government, you have overthrown that government. Without funds, a state cannot function. This means the shutdown of government business at Executive, Legislature and Judiciary in the affected states.”<br /> <br /> Mr Wike said if the director general of the State Security Services (SSS) could be sacked because of the recent siege to the National Assembly, then the acting chairman of the EFCC deserved to be sacked and prosecuted for his action against the two states.<br /> <br /> Mr Wike said the EFCC, as an agency of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled federal government, went after Benue state government because of the defection the state governor, Samuel Ortom, from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br /> <br /> The governor linked the commission’s action in Akwa Ibom to the defection of the former Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, from the PDP to the APC.<br /> <br /> He said the EFCC was ultimately targeting the Rivers state government.<br /> <br /> He called on the Nigeria Governors Forum to defend the independence of states.

Two, Section 50 (1) (a) of the constitution is clear that any Senator can be elected as Senate President.<br /> <br /> ” If the only thing left of the APC change agenda is to change the Senate President we can only wish them goodluck.<br /> <br /> “Perhaps, Mr Oshiomhole needs to be better educated about our parliamentary history when he said, “For the first time in parliamentary history in Nigeria, we had a situation where the APC had majority of Senators and went on to elect a PDP as Deputy Senate President”.<br /> <br /> “Where is Mr. Oshiomhole when Senator John Wash Pam of the Nigerian People’s Party (NPP) became Deputy Senate President in the Second Republic even when the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) had the majority.<br /> <br /> “The same thing happened in the House of Representatives when NPP’s Rt. Hon. Edwin Umeh Ezeoke was elected Speaker in an NPN majority House. But then, it would require a level of education to understand these things.”<br /> <br /> The president of the senate further said it was hypocritical that APC members jubilated when former Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal retained his position after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br /> <br /> He added, “Tambuwal retained his seat, even when his new party was in the minority. These are people whose standards of morality are infinitely elastic.<br /> <br /> “We are sure the remaining APC Senators need to do a lot of work to bring Oshiomhole up to speed about parliamentary practice.<br /> <br /> “His ignorance are too clear in his comments about how the Senate was adjourned on July 24, 2018, the distribution of committee chairmanship in the Senate and the difference between the post of Senate President and Minority Leader.<br /> <br /> “He has made so much song and dance about Mr. Godswill Akpabio resigning as Senate Minority Leader when he left the PDP to join APC. For this, Akpabio has become his hero and a symbol of honour.<br /> <br /> “He obviously does not understand that the post of Minority Leader is a strictly party affair. And the PDP simply decided who to give it as it is not even a position that was mentioned in the constitution.<br /> <br /> “Whereas, the Senate President position is a constitutional creation, which required majority votes of all the members.<br /> <br /> “Again, we don’t expect people whose only experience in politics is at the provincial levels to understand this. No wonder they are talking of crowns and inheritance.”<br /> <br /> Saraki further said “we found that instead of addressing any issue raised by the Senate President, his press conference merely showcased his obsession and those of his sponsors with Saraki’s removal, which he did without any decorum befitting of his age or his awarded office.<br /> <br /> “He brimmed with hate, hurled abuses, threw tantrums, told lies, huffed, puffed. In the end, he said nothing.<br /> <br /> “It is indeed amazing that the same Oshiomhole, who is now describing Saraki as a politician of no consequence was the same one who only a few months ago was crawling all over the place pleading for Saraki’s support to become chairman.<br /> <br /> “We are sure that those who took him to Saraki several times to plead his case must now be thoroughly embarrassed by his reckless and uncouth manner.<br /> <br /> “By his conduct and utterances, Oshiomhole, who accused Saraki of not acting in national interest needs to do more to convince Nigerians that his desperate desire to become party chairman is not simply to feed his over-sized ego.<br /> <br /> “The fair distribution of the Committee chairmanship is one of the stabilizing factors in the 8th Senate and has helped it in achieving more than all its predecessors.<br /> <br /> “We need to inform the APC chairman that if he wants to know why the 2018 budget was delayed, he should ask the heads of the MDAs.<br /> <br /> “We reckon that should be easy for him since he is now their ‘headmaster’, moving around with canes to whip ministers into line.<br /> <br /> “Oshiomhole once again demonstrated his lack of sense of history by talking of Buhari winning more votes in Kwara than Saraki. Never before have we had a great opportunity like we have now to take our state back from the rapacious few, who have held the state by the jugular and prevented it from meeting the hopes and aspirations of its people.<br /> <br /> ”From my consultations with key stakeholders so far, I can say, categorically, that Kwarans have all resolved to take their destiny into their own hands and take back what rightly belongs to them. This is unprecedented in the history of our state, and we must not waste this opportunity,” he charged<br /> <br /> Alhaji Mohammed stressed the need for unity on the part of the people, saying ”if we all remain united, we can’t and we won’t lose the looming battle for the survival of our dear state. That’s why I am delighted, and indeed encouraged, that the good people of our state, whether from the North, South or Central, are all united in their singular determination to rescue their state from the grinding poverty, monumental misgovernance and the general state of funk that has enveloped it,” he said.<br /> <br /> Alhaji Mohammed said it is a mere blackmail to say he does not like the people of Ilorin, and went ahead to enumerate his antecedents, which include actively supporting an Ilorin indigene for governor in 2011.<br /> <br /> He assured that under the new dispensation in the state, every Kwaran counts and will have a voice, saying: ”The resources of Kwara will be used for the development of the state and its people. There is over dramatisation of the entire thing.<br /> <br /> “The danger we stand of the use of public opinion to take decisions, playing to the gallery, is that it may discourage other security chiefs from taking proactive action.<br /> <br /> “Yes, the sack decision sounds sweet but it is not the best.<br /> <br /> “As far as I am concerned, the best that would have happened is that they should have taken time to investigate what happened.”<br /> <br /> Elekima said that the incident at the national assembly did not constitute threat to the country’s democracy.<br /> <br /> On 2019 general elections, he said that Nigerians must elect government that would be accountable to the people.<br /> <br /> The N-ADC chairman said that the country was tired of political calculations that led to election of leaders in 2011 and 2015, adding that “it doesn’t add up’’.<br /> <br /> He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the amended Electoral Act, saying it was critical for the 2019 elections.<br /> <br /> “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will deliver credible elections in 2019 if the president signs the amendment.”<br /> <br /> Elekima added that if the Bill was signed, 90 per cent of the incumbent elected officers would fail re-election because 98 per cent of the results that brought them in were rigged.<br /> <br /> “The election results in 2019 will embarrass everybody because we know that Nigerians will vote out a lot of them.”<br /> <br /> On the strength of the N-ADC to mobilise Nigerians for 2019 elections, he said that the group had the capacity.<br /> <br /> “ADC does not have any capacity to do that; we have the structure across the country, and that is why we pulled out of the ADC, which is now with the Conference of United Political Parties. (CUPP) ”<br /> <br /> On involvement of former governor of Cross River, Mr Donald Duke, in CUPP, Elekima said “in fairness to him, Duke never supported the CUPP.<br /> <br /> “To the best of my knowledge. I don’t think he supports CUPP.”<br /> <br /> He also revealed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo did not consult Duke before fusing Coalition of Nigeria Movement (CNM) with ADC.<br /> <br /> On Buhari’s request that part of the money meant for constituency projects in 2018 Budget be vired to fund 2019 elections, Elekima said there was nothing bad about it.<br /> <br /> According to him, it is a matter of priority and scale of preference.<br /> <br /> He also said that the national assembly had a responsibility to heed the call to reconvene to approve funds for the elections and attend to other urgent isues.<br /> <br /> “It is not a matter of discretion, but a must for the lawmakers to reconvene and do the needful.<br /> <br /> “It is their constitutional duty and they have no option. It is when they have finished it that they can go on recess.<br /> <br /> “It they don’t approve the request and do what they are supposed to do, the government will be shut down and there will be total disruption. We already have anarchy on the ground.<br /> <br /> “If they refuse and INEC cannot conduct elections, they will expire one day whether they like it or not.<br /> <br /> “So, it is not matter of discretion; they have to do the needful,” Elekima said.<br /> <br /> He stated that the preponderance of requests by associations to be registered as political parties was due to lack of internal democracy existing parties.<br /> <br /> “It is the misbehaviour of people, especially lack of internal democracy that has driven a lot of people into that.” </div>

He was not immediately reachable for comment.<br /> <br /> Bin Hammam was banned for life from football by FIFA in 2011 for his part in a cash-for-votes scandal.<br /> <br /> The Qatari has denied any wrongdoing.</div>

I tried to introduce myself to them, when they asked me to enter my car and drive off.<br /> <br /> “I was walking towards my car to leave, when from behind they started pushing me,” Victor Iroele, Giwa’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) said in a statement quoting Ikpme a explaining.<br /> <br /> “I am shocked to say the least by what happened at the Glasshouse on Thursday by operatives of DSS, even without identifying why and who sent them to lay siege at a facility that has no threat to public peace,” he said.<br /> <br /> The acting general secretary noted that the Giwa-led NFF faction was law abiding and would not take laws into their hands, but would continue to explore the path of peace and justice to settle every score.<br /> <br /> “We want to appeal to anyone, who is behind the DSS invasion of the football house to advise them to quietly leave the premises as their action has been reported to the relevant authorities for investigation and appropriate action.<br /> <br /> “More worrisome is their penchant for chasing staff away once it is 4 p.m., irrespective of what assignment they are doing, and which has affected productivity and morale with most staff now struggling to come to work,” Ikpeme said.<br /> <br /> “I have kept quiet over time believing common sense will prevail, but the action against me on Thursday was a confirmation of the fears of most staff that their personal security was under threat by gun welding DSS operatives walking around everywhere in the Glasshouse,” he said. </div>
