Etienne Capoue gave Watford the lead, his second goal of the season.<br />
<br />
The game’s first chance fell to Watford in the seventh minute through Jose Holebas but his low shot was well saved by Thibaut Courtois.<br />
<br />
In the 11th minute Eden Hazard went close for Chelsea only to see his effort turned away for a corner by Miguel Britos.<br />
<br />
Odion Ighalo had Watford’s best chance of the half on 24 minutes following a cross from Amrabat but missed from close range.<br />
<br />
Two minutes later Brasnislav Ivanovic met Hazard’s free-kick which was saved by Hureleo Gomes.<br />
<br />
And one minute into added time, Hazard’s 20-yard free-kick beat Watford’s two-man wall but was stopped by Gomes.<br />
<br />
The first chance of the second half fell to Chelsea on 52nd minute but Costa couldn’t connect with Oscar’s cross.<br />
<br />
In the 55th minute, Capoue put Watford 1-0 ahead as he chests a cross from the right and volleyed a left-foot strike into the top corner.<br />
<br />
Hazard almost responded for Chelsea on 58 minutes, but his shot was saved by Gomes.<br />
<br />
Chelsea made their first change with Moses replacing Pedro in the 71st minute.<br />
<br />
Two minutes later Michy Batshuayi was introduced for Oscar.<br />
<br />
In the 80th minute Batshuayi equalised for Chelsea tapping in from six-yard after Gomes spilled Hazard’s shot.<br />
<br />
Chelsea went close to snatching the lead on 85 minutes off a scramble but Gomes gathered.<br />
<br />
But with three minutes left, Costa scored the winning goal, collecting a long pass from substitute Fabrega before slotting the ball under Gomes.<br />
<br />
And at White Hart Lane new signing Victor Wanyama was the saviour as he scored the only goal as Tottenham hotspur pipped Crystal Palace 1-0.<br />
<br />
The former Southampton midfielder netted in the 83rd minute off kanes’ assist to give Spurs the win.<br />
<br />
It was Spurs’ first victory of the season after drawing 1-1 away to Everton in the opening day of the campaign.<br />

Lagos monarch, Oba Riliwan Akiolu I, on Saturday urged Nigerians to be patient in spite of the hard times in the country, assuring them that all will be well. “I am confident that the economy of the country, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, will change for good because our president is focused,’’ Akiolu told newsmen in his palace.<br />

The royal father, who spoke during the celebration of the Isese Festival in Isale Eko area of Lagos Island, said that the present hardship was a prelude to a better tomorrow.<br />

“Let us cooperate with the government. Do not take laws into your hands and always inform the security agencies wherever there are criminal activities,’’ Akiolu said. He appealed to the Niger Delta Avengers to stop bombing oil facilities and put their grievances on the table for the government to address.<br />
<br />
“I want to use this medium to appeal to the Niger Delta Avengers to give peace a chance. “I agree to some extent with them that certain things have to be done for them, but they just have to give peace a chance and things will work for them. “They should stop and put their grievances on the table and the government will address it. It is not too late to mend, “ Akiolu said. On the festival, Akiolu said it was an inherited custom and tradition which he does not joke with.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Isese festival featured diverse cultural activities to enhance interaction and promote harmony in the state and the country at large. Numerous Lagosians joined in the celebration of the festival, dancing and singing to various deities. (NAN)

Two Nigerian state-owned oil pipelines were blown up in the delta region Friday in attacks blamed on the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) militant group, a local security official said Saturday.<br />
<br />
 “The attacks targeted two pipelines located in the same zone,” an official for the Department of State Security (DSS) told AFP. “Both belonged to the NPDC (Nigerian Petroleum Development Company) and we believe this attack to be due to militants.”<br />

Also on Friday, a newly emerged armed group calling itself the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM) claimed responsibility for an attack the same day in Udu State. It was the second claim of responsibility by the group, which earlier this month claimed to have blown up a major pipeline and warned of more attacks to come.<br />
<br />
The creation of the group was announced scarcely two days earlier by its spokesman, self-proclaimed “general” Aldo Agbalaja, who warned that the NDGJM would strike at oil installations within 48 hours. Since the start of the year, the Avengers have carried out a string of devastating attacks on Nigeria’s oil pipelines and facilities. The oil rebels have also said the Niger Delta, home to the country’s multi-billion-dollar oil and gas resources, might declare independence on October 1. Nigeria marks October 1 as the anniversary of its political independence from colonial power Britain in 1960.<br />
<br />
Oil majors including Shell, Exxon, Chevron, Eni and the state-run oil group NNPC have all been targeted in the attacks this year. The attacks have reduced Nigeria’s output by a third, hammering government revenue at a time of low global oil prices.<br />
<br />
The oil sector accounts for 90 percent of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings and 70 percent of government revenue. The Avengers claim to seek a fairer share of Nigeria’s oil wealth for residents of the region as well as self-determination and political autonomy. They have rejected a government truce to end the violence.

The Clarets converted two of their three shots on target, with Sam Vokes grabbing his first Premier League goal inside two minutes and Andre Gray doubling the lead before half-time.<br />

There was no rousing comeback from Liverpool like the one they produced last weekend at Arsenal to win 4-3 after going behind and, despite dominating possession, they never looked like scoring.<br />
<br />
That was partly down to their hosts' dogged determination to hold onto their lead but largely due to a lack of cohesion and penetration in the final third.<br />
<br />
Jurgen Klopp's side were laboured in their build-up, particularly in the first half, and careless and wasteful in possession.<br />
<br />
They were punished after just 98 seconds when Ragnar Klavan's crossfield pass posed some difficulty for Nathaniel Clyne and he gave the ball away, with Gray quick to pick out Vokes who turned to smash home from the edge of the penalty area.<br />
<br />
The Wales international missed the first half of Burnley's previous top-flight campaign with a knee injury which hampered his progress when he eventually came back but, after a confidence-boosting Euro 2016, the big frontman took Burnley's first Premier League goal against Liverpool - and their first in the league in six matches - well.<br />
<br />
Liverpool proceeded to huff and puff through midfield into the final third with very little energy or dynamism and even less reward.<br />
<br />
Striker Daniel Sturridge, making his first appearance of the season after a hip injury ruled him out last weekend, played in a predominantly right-sided forward role and did not get his first sight of goal until the half-hour when he drilled wide of the far post from the inside-right channel.<br />
<br />
The England international's next contribution seven minutes before the break was more devastating but for all the wrong reasons as he lost possession on the edge of Burnley's penalty area.<br />
<br />
However, he was not solely to blame as Klavan missed his challenge on the charging Steven Defour, the Clarets' club-record signing making his debut, and Gray easily skipped past weak tackles from Dejan Lovren and the recovering Klavan to stroke a past Simon Mignolet.<br />
<br />
The last time Burnley scored more than one against Liverpool was in 1973 - a run of 20 matches - but they are a different team now and it was no more than they deserved.<br />
<br />
Midfielder James Milner, who replaced the under-fire Alberto Moreno, looked understandably uncomfortable as a stand-in left-back. But the problems were further upfield, where an ineffective midfield failed to make the most of their possession.<br />
<br />
Burnley, by contrast, were more efficient and clinical with the ball, and patient, tenacious and committed without it, which was most of the time.<br />
<br />
The statistics showed Liverpool had 81 per cent possession and attempted 24 shots, but with only five on target and none which really troubled Tom Heaton.<br />
<br />
Marko Grujic, a late substitute for Adam Lallana, forced Heaton into his first real save in the 79th minute, but Burnley ran out comfortable winners.<br />
<br />
Sean Dyche's side are up and running with their first points of the season. For Klopp, it is back to the drawing board.<br />

The Federal Government has stepped up vigilance within the drug supply chains in the country on the circulation of two confirmed falsified versions of Quinine Sulphate.<br />

A statement said the Federal Ministry of Health received a medical alert that the two falsified drugs contain zero active pharmaceutical ingredients. The statement signed by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director, Media and Public Relations of the ministry, on Saturday said the drugs were circulating in West and Central Africa.<br />
<br />
Akinola said the two version of the drug were circulating in Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo. She said the quinine Sulphate was used in the treatment of malaria. According to her, the implication of using the falsified one is that it will not be effective and may also lead to other health challenges.<br />
<br />
She said one of the fake products was named Quinine Sulfate 300 mg with 1000 Tablets per container, Batch Number 10H05, expiry date 09/2018 and it manufactured 09/2014. Akinola added that the drug manufactured by Novadina Pharmaceutical Limited, London, United Kingdom was first was discovered in Cameroon. The director said the other version of the fake drug was Quinine Sulphate 300mg with 100 Tablets per container; batch F4387, expiry date 11/18 and its date of manufacture is 12/14. She explained that the product was manufactured in India by CAD Pharm, and it was discovered in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo. She advised Nigerians to be vigilant and report to the nearest National Agency for Food and Drug Administration office anywhere the drugs were spotted including hospitals and pharmaceutical shops.<br />
<br />
The ministry urges Nigerians to also report it the following GSM no +234-8037881120, +234-8055056727 and +234-8035902679. “If you are in possession of these products, please do not use them. “If you have taken this falsified product or if you suffer an adverse effect following its uptake, please seek immediate advice from a qualified healthcare professional and report the incident to NAFDAC.’’

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo said contrary to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) position, the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Edo had shown that the state was viable.<br />

<a name='more' id="more"></a>Oshiomhole, who stated this at rallies in Ameddokhian, Egbele, Uzea and Ivue, near Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo on Saturday, noted that the PDP was never interested in the development of the state. He alleged the PDP made people believe that the state was a pure civil service state, and as such, had no money. “PDP years of leadership in Edo was a waste.<br />
<br />
They told us that there is no money in Edo and they failed to build schools, construct roads, build hospitals and they even laid off workers. “But with our efforts this past seven years, we have shown that Edo is a viable state. “This is evident in the schools and hospitals we have built, the roads we have constructed, and water we have provided across the state. “It is for this reason that we are bold to ask for continuity. The continuity I am asking is that the work APC has started must be completed,” he said. Oshiomhole said his administration’s development strides across the state and Edo Central particularly, surpassed what an indigene of Esan land could not do, even when they held sway as leadership of the PDP at both state and national level.<br />
<br />
“Instead of developing this place, they only bring to you, every four years, N2,000 for you to vote for them. They again abandoned you only to resurface four years later for another deceit. “To me, this is disservice to you. This tells you that they never mean well for you. They only try to buy you to gain power in order for them to enrich themselves,” he said.<br />
<br />
At the rally, Mr Godwin Obaseki, APC flagbearer, said what Oshiomhole’s administration had done was to lay foundation to take the state to the next level. “The process of rebuilding Edo started with Oshiomhole’s government. Our work now is to take the state to the next level, to an enviable height that we all desire it to be. “Apart from continuing with the roads construction, building of schools and hospitals, provision of water and many others, our focus will be on human capital development.<br />
<br />
“We want to be able to ensure that youths that constitute about 60 percent of the state’s population are either engaged productively or learn a trade. Our women will also be empowered,” he added. On his part, the state chairman of the party, Mr Anselm Ojezua appealed for support from the people of the senatorial district. Meanwhile, the clan head of Uzea Kingdom, in Esan North East council, Solomon Iluobe, has endorsed the candidacy of the APC, Mr Godwin Obaseki.<br />

The Onojie of Uzea, made the declaration when the APC candidate paid a visit to his palace when Obaseki’s campaign stopped over at Uzea. According to the monarch, “What we are waiting for is your swearing in; you are already the governor of Edo State. “I have seen the handwork of the APC and the development they brought to my domain. Though the work is yet to be completed, I know you will do more as the next governor. “I am assuring you; you don’t have a problem here in Uzea. As you leave, I will call my people to make sure you don’t lose any one vote in Uzea.”

Romelu Lukaku has withdrawn his transfer request and committed his future to Everton, manager Ronald Koeman has revealed.<br />

The Belgian international, 23, had asked for a move away from the club and had been linked with a return to Chelsea.<br />

But Koeman said the striker has changed his mind and is now back in training after recovering from a cut to his heel suffered in pre-season.<br />

"Ten days before the transfer deadline he came into the manager's office and said he was no longer leaving and had decide to stay at Everton," Koeman wrote in his column in Dutch newspaper  De Telegraaf.<br />
<br />
"His decision is the same value as a big money transfer. He is not only a good player but a fine person. He lives his football in the fashion that you would want a top footballer to.<br />
<br />
"It is great to work with him and I think he had seen that we want to engineer improvement at every corner. To develop him into a really top player is the challenge before me."<br />
<br />
It is a boost for the Merseyside club ahead of Saturday's game with West Brom and follows the £25 million signing this week of Yannick Bolasie from Crystal Palace.<br />

Lukaku has scored 43 league goals for the Toffees since moving from Chelsea for £28 million in 2013 which included a season-long loan spell.<br />

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State of recruiting All Progressive Congress (APC) loyalists as Ad-Hoc staff ahead of the forthcoming 2016 Edo State Gubernatorial election.<br />

In a statement issued in Abuja Saturday, the party said it had evidence to buttress its accusation. The statement signed by Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the Party’s spokesman said “there is a video evidence exposing INEC officials in Edo state of compromising the outcome of the gubernatorial election before the scheduled Saturday, September 10, 2016 poll.<br />

“We have once again uncovered another plot by the Electoral umpire in Edo State to rig the Gubernatorial election in favour of the government in Power in the state.<br />
<br />
There are clear evidence available to us showing how INEC officials are recruiting APC members as Ad-Hoc staff to rig the election for the APC candidate in the Saturday, September 10, 2016 governorship election in the State” Prince Adeyeye said.<br />
<br />
He warned that the Party will not tolerate any act of sabotage and advised the electoral umpire to recruit neutral and credible Nigerians without partisan interest as Ad-Hoc staff to maintain their neutrality in the process.<br />
<br />
“We will not accept anything short of free, fair and credible process leading to the Saturday, September 10, Gubernatorial poll in Edo State.<br />
<br />
We wish to assure INEC and the APC of our cooperation for a successful election but will not accept an election that is already compromised before the actual poll” he said.<br />
<br />
It further called on the electoral body to put every measure in place to conduct a hitch free and credible election.<br />

Argentina international Aguero scored a penalty and a header in the first half on Saturday to help Pep Guardiola's side to a third victory in three competitive games of the new season.<br />

Aguero missed twice from the spot during the midweek Champions League play-off thrashing of Steaua Bucharest, but he made no mistake from 12 yards when Ryan Shawcross was rather harshly penalised by referee Mike Dean.<br />

Stoke fans were still making their feelings clear when City doubled their lead, Aguero heading in Kevin De Bruyne's delivery, and the home side felt further aggrieved when Aleksandar Kolarov's clumsy challenge on Joe Allen six yards from goal went unpunished.<br />

City had won all 25 previous Premier League matches in which they led by two or more goals at half-time, but Mark Hughes' side were given hope of a comeback when Bojan Krkic converted a penalty past Willy Caballero - starting ahead of Joe Hart again - after another controversial call against Raheem Sterling.<br />

Stoke pushed in search of a leveller as City began to show signs of fatigue following their European exertions, but Nolito's first Premier League goal in the closing stages - swiftly followed by a second - made the result safe and took the visitors level on points with Manchester United after two matches.<br />
<br />
Sterling, booed by a number of home fans in the early stages, curled a shot narrowly over the crossbar from the edge of the area as City started strongly in blustery conditions.<br />
<br />
Stoke showed encouraging signs on the counter-attack, with Allen unlucky not to turn a cross into Mame Diouf's path inside the area, but Shay Given had to be alert to stop Sterling slotting the ball into the bottom corner as City threatened again.<br />
<br />
Stoke spoiled their good early work though by gifting City the lead with 27 minutes played. Shawcross was adjudged to have held on to Nicolas Otamendi's arm at a corner, allowing Aguero to fire high past Given from 12 yards.<br />
<br />
Given blocked another Aguero effort as City looked to take control amid continued frustration from the home fans, but he could do nothing to stop the Argentina striker adding a second on 36 minutes as he glanced a superb header into the far corner following De Bruyne's free-kick from the right.<br />
<br />
Caballero blocked Bardsley's volley at his left-hand post to preserve the lead, before Diouf headed wide after Allen's strong penalty appeals for a shove by Kolarov were ignored, but Stoke were given a lifeline just after the break.<br />
<br />
Sterling was penalised for trying to block Shawcross from reaching a high ball at the far post, and Bojan dispatched the spot-kick high into Caballero's goal.<br />
<br />
With the crowd in full voice and Jonathan Walters having been introduced from the bench, Stoke pressed hard to find an equaliser, and City were rewarded for some disciplined defending when they struck the killer blow on the counter-attack with four minutes left.<br />
<br />
Kelechi Iheanacho, just two minutes after replacing Aguero, latched onto De Bruyne's pass before rounding Given and squaring the ball to Nolito, who side-footed home.<br />
<br />
Nolito then scored again as Sterling broke clear before setting up the former Celta Vigo man for another simple finish.<br />

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Friday declared that the state government would sue the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services for sealing the Sharks Stadium, the original venue of the August 17 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party.<br />

 Wike also said that the people of the state allowed the security agencies to take over state facilities because of the visitors from other states.<br />
<br />
Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt while inaugurating the Peace and Security Committee of the State, the governor explained that the state government would seek judicial interpretation to determine if the Federal Government was right to take laws into its hands.<br />

<br />
Wike pointed out that security agencies should not think that the illegal invasion of the stadium and other government property was a dress rehearsal for the rigging of the forthcoming rerun elections in the state.<br />
<br />
“I hope what you did that day is not what you plan to do during the rerun elections. We allowed it because we had visitors from outside the state. Nobody will allow you to rig elections in this state,” he said.<br />
<br />
He, however, charged members of the Peace and Security Committee to work towards promoting security of lives and property within the ambit of the law.<br />
<br />
 The membership of the Peace and Security Committee inaugurated by the governor are the Commander of the NNS Pathfinder, the representative of the Nigerian Army, the Rivers State Police Commissioner, the Director of the DSS and the Comptroller of Prisons.<br />
<br />
Others are the Comptroller of Customs, Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Comptroller of Immigration, Commander of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and a representative of the State Traditional Council.

A bizarre scenario played out yesterday at the Okigwe Road roundabout, Owerri, as a man slumped and died while having a heated argument with his friend.<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>The deceased, whose name could not be ascertained before press time, was said to be a block moulder and hailed from one of the communities in Ngor Okpala local council area of Imo State. According to a man who claimed to have witnessed the entire incident said, the duo were arguing over a possible business transaction. “From the way the argument flowed, they obviously had a transaction that probably went sour.<br />

There were no exchange of blows and I can’t remember hearing any of them threatening the other, but one of them slumped and died”, the man recounted with shock.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that shortly after the deceased slumped, some sympathisers rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.<br />
<br />
However, it was also gathered that the dead man’s friend, who was identified as Dozie Eze, from Orodo, Mbaitoli local government area of the state, is said to be answering a few questions at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri. Speaking to no one in particular, a relation of the suspect, Mr. Iyke Eze, fumed that “Dozie is being persecuted for no just cause, especially as those at the scene of the incident have testified that there was no exchange of blows before the man slumped and died”.<br />

When contacted on his mobile line, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident. “Yes, such a thing happened.<br />
<br />
However the report available to me is that somebody slumped and later died”, Enwerem said. Continuing, the PPRO said that it has not been established that there was a fight or verbal threat before the deceased slumped and died. When asked to confirm if anybody was detained in connection with the incident, the PPRO said he was not aware of such a development. “I am not aware that anybody was detained in connection with the incident. There are necessary indices that must be established before the police detains any suspect. The instant case can’t be one of them”, Enwerem explained.

No fewer than 2000 recruits of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, whose recruitment into the Service were suspended in September 2015, by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, on Friday, stormed Aso Villa, the seat of power to protest their dismissal.<br />

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on Friday said some dark forces had been busy hijacking the powers given to the anti-graft agency to battle economic and financial crimes in the country.<br />

Mr. Magu stated this while presenting a paper titled “This Is Our Chance’’ at the Symposium organized by members of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers, NADL, in Lagos.<br />
“When these dark forces gather (as they have), our expectation is that bodies such as the National Association of Democratic Lawyers would rise up, without any further prompting and come to our rescue,” the EFCC chairman said.<br />
<br />
“The tug-and-pull for the soul of the EFCC aptly mirrors that for the control of the destiny of our dear nation.”<br />
<br />
Mr. Magu did not provide details of those he said were gathering and scheming to appropriate the functions and powers of his commission.<br />
<br />
He however vowed that his agency would counter the dark forces and ensure that the war against corruption was not derailed.<br />
<br />
“Whilst we may not claim omniscience, one thing we are convinced of in the Commission is that Nigeria will be doomed if we fail to win the war on corruption,” he said.<br />
The EFCC chairman said Nigerians would no longer be held hostage by the twin evils of corruption and impunity.<br />
<br />
<br />
He promised that the Commission under his watch would challenge anyone, including certain senior lawyers, judges and other judicial officers, against whom concrete evidence for perverting the course of justice had been established.<br />
He lauded the patriotic fervour of the members of the association in the fight against corruption, saying their confrontation of the corruption monster through the instrumentality of the law was an inspiration to ‘‘those of us on the enforcement side of the law.’’<br />
<br />
Mr. Magu, however, stated that the Commission, in the course of its anti-graft war, had always been confronted with people he described as ‘‘a gang of rogue elements,’’ who had been a spoke in the wheel of the Commission’s activities and also given a bad name to the bar and bench.<br />
According to him, ‘‘the biggest form of corruption is not the ones you find in government offices or banks; it is not the ones that is plaguing the oil industry or pension administration. The biggest, most virulent form of corruption that ever existed is the one that has eaten deep into the fabric of the Temple of Justice.<br />
<br />
‘‘It is to you who minister in the temple of justice that we all run to -high or low, mighty or weak, lawmakers, law breakers and law enforcers. It is to the courts that we all run, for protection.<br />
”However, we are all witnesses to the abuse of skills, knowledge, powers, position and privileges by a few rogue elements, who, whilst being a tiny fraction, have an outsized influence on the direction of the Nigerian judiciary and indeed, the Nigerian nation.’’<br />
<br />
He, therefore, called on everyone who is pained by the parlous state of affairs in the country to join hands with the Commission to stamp out corruption from Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
Mr. Magu, who also described the anti-graft mandate of the Commission as a leveller, added that ‘‘Where hapless Nigerians are defrauded, EFCC will swiftly come to their aid; where powerless Nigerians are short-changed, EFCC will intervene and where there is impunity, EFCC will step in and level the field.’’<br />
<br />
He stated that contrary to the impression that the Commission had ‘immense’ powers, it had always operated strictly within the bounds of the Rule of Law.<br />
<br />
‘‘It is important to note that what has made the EFCC to stand out from every other law enforcement agency in Africa, are our conviction, commitment and professionalism, backed by the unshaken support of ordinary Nigerians, ’’ Mr. Magu said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday refuted the claim by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun, that it was responsible for the current economic challenges Nigerians are facing under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
Recall that the chairman of the ruling APC had on Thursday said the Nigeria is currently in intensive care unit after it was rescued from PDP.<br />

The PDP reacting to the statement through its Director of New Media, Deji Adeyanju, said the PDP handed over to Buhari, a Nigeria significantly better than the one presided over today by him.<br />
“We read the statement by Chief John Oyegun, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to the effect that PDP has no right to speak about Buhari’s economic failures and felt compelled to respond for record purposes. First off, Section S39 CFRN guarantees all Nigerians the right to freedom of expression. Chief Oyegun and his party would do well to stop its many attempts at violating this right,” the party said.<br />
<br />
“Secondly, we will not follow Chief Oyegun’s path by responding with an invective rejoinder. We will let the facts speak for themselves. For the avoidance of doubt these are some of the economic indices inherited by the Buhari administration.<br />
<br />
“No 1 destination for Foreign Investment in Africa with $395m in investments in Q1 2015 alone. Single digit inflation. It was 9.6% at the inception of the Buhari admin. It stands at 16.5% now; a GDP at an average growth of 8% p/a in the last 10 yrs. Nigeria is experiencing its first -five GDP growth since 1999.<br />
<br />
“A telecoms sector that has received more than $32b in investment since 2001.The largest economy in African valued at over $500b. – An economy that was reducing the employment rate”.<br />
“An economy that had successfully increased per capita income from $299.4 in 1999 to $2640 in 2015. A stock market valued at N11.66t. The Nigeria Stock market has lost more than N1t of its value since the inception of the Buhari admin.<br />
<br />
“An economy that had reduced its food import bill from well over N1t to N684.7 billion as at December 2013 and was on target to meet its target of producing 20million MT of food annually.<br />
“An economy that was diversifying by exponentially increasing non-oil revenue for the federation. A successfully unbundled power sector with a suitable environment for investment. An economy that had successfully reduced its personnel cost over the last five years.<br />
<br />
“Several tools for combating corruption such as IPPIS, TSA, GIFMIS, EFCC and ICPC. In the past year, the APC led FG has detained and publicly accused Col. Sambo Dasuki and members of our party for corruption.<br />
<br />
“We find it surprising that the FG is asking for secret trials for the accused persons. We urge the FG to try them openly and in accordance respect for the rule of law.<br />
<br />
The party further said: “We feel compelled to remind Chief Oyegun that not all monies generated from crude oil sales accrue to the FG. Monies from crude sales accrue to Nigeria and its various JV partners.<br />
<br />
What accrues to Nigeria is then shared between the FG, States and LGAs subject to the deduction of operational expenses.<br />
<br />
“It is either a rookie mistake, or deliberate misrepresentation to state that the Jonathan admin could not account for money it is under no obligation to account for.<br />
“Having said that, we urge the Buhari admin to audit NNPC if he feels the need to and  to prosecute anyone found guilty of misappropriation of public funds according to the law.”<br />
<br />
The statement said there were no economic indices anywhere in the world by which the Buhari admininistration can be rated better than anmy previous PDP administration.<br />
<br />
“His performance as President thus far has been shambolic and on a daily basis he reverses the gains we made. Chief Oyegun should be reminded that we handed over a significantly better Nigeria to Buhari than we received from the military. The Chairman should also be reminded that Buhari played a significant role in the state of Nigeria handed over to us – first as Head of State between 1983 and 1985, then as a member of the government of the Late General Sani Abacha.<br />
<br />
The Party added that the APC chairman would do better to advise President Buhari on how to reverse the recession his policies have brought on the nation, how to resolve the humanitarian crises in the North East; and how to reverse the polio outbreak recently discovered in Nigeria after the PDP’s policies had seen an eradication of scourge from more than half of the world’s polio cases in 2009 to 6 in 2014 and 0 in 2015.

The hatred between the Yoruba and Ndigbo has gone on for far too long. Let there be love shared among us!<br />
<br />
The Yorubas and the Igbos, two of the most resourceful, engaging and outgoing ethnic groups in Nigeria, are becoming implacable enemies. Increasingly, they seem to hate one another with pure hatred. I never appreciated the extent of their animosity until the social media came of age in Nigeria. Now, hardly a day passes that you will not find Yorubas and Igbos exchanging hateful words on internet blogs.<br />
<br />
The Nigerian civil war ended in 1970. Nevertheless, it continues to rage today on social media mostly by people who were not even alive during the civil war. In blog after blog, the Yorubas and the Igbos go out of their way to abuse one another for the most inconsequential of reasons. This hatred is becoming so deep-seated, it needs to be addressed before it gets completely out of hand. It is time to call a truce. A conscious effort needs to be made by opinion-leaders on both sides of the ethnic divide to put a stop to this nonsense.<br />
<br />
Ethnic stereotyping<br />
<br />
Both the Yorubas and the Igbo stereotype one another. To the Igbo, the Yorubas are the “ngbati ngbati” “ofemmanu” who eat too much oil. They are masters of duplicity and deception; saying one thing while meaning another. To the Yorubas, the Igbo are clannish and money-minded. They are Shylock traders who specialize in selling counterfeit goods.<br />
<br />
But the truth is that stereotypes are essentially generalisations and exaggerations. In a lot of cases, they are unreliable and untrue. Stereotypes must be recognised at their most effective as a joke. They are the stock-in-trade of seasoned comedians; the garnish for side-splitting anecdotes at weddings and social gatherings. Stereotypes should not be taken seriously. We should laugh at them without being offended by them.<br />
<br />
The more Nigeria develops as a melting pot of nations, the more we should be able to laugh at ourselves. The greater inclination to do this denotes increasing strength of character and self-confidence. However, with the advancement of social media, the banter has gone way beyond the jocular and innocuous to outright malice and unadulterated hatred. Increasingly, what you hear are abusive and pejorative labels of “Yariba,” “Yorubastards” and “Yorobbers;” as well as “Eboes,”<br />
<br />
“Zooafrans” and “Biafrauds.”<br />
<br />
As the insults fly with abandon, you begin to wonder where all this comes from. What is the basis of all this hate? In the sixties, the Igbo were slaughtered in pogroms in the North. However, the principal exchange of hateful words today is not between Northerners and Easterners, but between Easterners and Westerners. Why are these two ethnic groups so much at loggerheads? How did we get to this pass?<br />
<br />
Malicious stereotyping often involves denigrating the strengths of others. The Igbo are very enterprising; a very valuable resource in a developing country like Nigeria. But then this is castigated as mercenary. The Yorubas take great pride in education; another valuable asset in today’s modern world. But then they are derided as using this to get one over on others.<br />
<br />
The saving grace is that the two groups live side-by-side in peace and quiet in different parts of the country. Moreover, the animosity between them, especially among the younger generation, has not prevented their boys and girls and men and women from falling in love. Yoruba men marry Igbo women; and Igbo men marry Yoruba women. Meanwhile, “a lutta continua.”<br />
<br />
Awolowo factor<br />
<br />
The Igbo tar the Yorubas with the brush of Awolowo, who they label as “the father of ethnicity in Nigeria.” In that narrative, it is conveniently overlooked that the broadmindedness of the Yorubas enabled Azikiwe, an Igbo man, to win a regional election in the Yoruba heartland in 1954. Instead, what is harped on is the fact that Awolowo mobilized Yoruba politicians to nullify that victory by decamping from Azikiwe’s more nationalist camp to Awolowo’s more ethnically-focused camp.<br />
<br />
One of the newspaper headlines that sticks in my memory from 50 years ago is the one that said: “If East Goes, West will Go- Awo.” After a visit to Ojukwu in Enugu at the height of the acrimony over the mass killing of the Igbo in the North in the mid-1960s, Awolowo declared that if the East was allowed to secede as a result of acts of omission or commission, he would also lead the West into secession.<br />
<br />
This flashed a green light for Igbo secession. But when the East seceded, Awolowo failed to mobilise the West to follow suit. Not only did the West not join the East in secession, it joined the North in fighting against the East. Awolowo then became the Commissioner of Finance and Vice-President of the Federal Executive Council of the Nigerian government that prosecuted the war against Biafran secession.<br />
<br />
The Igbo have rightly deemed this a great betrayal. But their case against Awolowo did not end there. As finance minister, Awolowo was the brainchild of the strategy to blockade Biafra; leading to mass Igbo starvation and deaths. With the end of the war, it was also alleged that Awolowo orchestrated the policy whereby the totality of individual holdings of Biafran currency was converted to Nigerian legal tender at a flat maximum amount of only 20 pounds.<br />
<br />
This effectively pauperized the Igbo. Since it also coincided with the period when Nigerian corporations were being privatized, it had the effect of locking out the Igbo from strategic sectors of the Nigerian economy; gobbled up in the main by the Hausa-Fulanis and Yorubas.<br />
<br />
Brothers in adversity<br />
<br />
The Igbo case against Awolowo has become the Igbo case against the Yorubas. In the process, it is easily overlooked that prominent Yorubas, like Tai Solarin and Wole Soyinka, defended the Igbo right to self-determination during the Biafran War. The properties the Igbo left behind in Yorubaland during the Civil War were not expropriated by the Yorubas, as they were in some other places. When Odumegwu Ojukwu came back from exile in Ivory Coast, all his father’s properties in Lagos remained intact.<br />
<br />
Under President Obasanjo, a Yoruba man, the Igbos were given the control of Nigeria’s economic and monetary policy. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Governor of the Central Bank, Charles Soludo; and Director-General of the Stock Exchange, Ndidi Okereke-Onyuike, were all Igbos. So were the Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili; and the Director-General of NAFDAC, Dora Akinyuli.<br />
<br />
Indeed, Obasanjo favoured the Igbo more than his native Yorubas. He appointed an Igbo, Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, as the Minister of Defense and another, Air Marshal Paul Dike, as Nigeria’s first Igbo Chief of Air Staff. While the Igbo visit the transgressions of Awolowo on the Yorubas, they do not visit the favouritism of Obasanjo on the Yorubas.<br />
<br />
The sins of Awolowo were brought again to the fore in 2012 by Chinua Achebe in his book: “There Was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra.” The blogs came alive as blame was traded on both sides of the East-West divide. Awolowo was now cast by the Igbos as the father of the Yorubas; and they were determined to visit his sins on his Yoruba sons to the third and fourth generations.<br />
<br />
Mistakes galore<br />
<br />
Blunders continue to be made on both sides, fanning the flames of hatred. Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State blundered by deporting some destitute Igbos back to the East in the dead of night in 2013. This created uproar in the sizeable Igbo community in Lagos. Even though Fashola expressly apologized to Ndigbo for the faux pas, a ridiculous discussion nevertheless ensued about the rightful ownership of Lagos.<br />
<br />
Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State, put his foot in it when he declared that Lagos, as a former national capital, was “no man’s land and so belongs to all of us.” This incensed ethnic jingoists in Yorubaland who, forgetting the traditional hospitality of the Yorubas, asked the Igbo to leave Lagos and go back East.<br />
<br />
But nothing quite compares to the broadside that came from the Oba of Lagos. During the 2015 election, Oba Rilwan Akiolu summoned Lagos Igbo leaders to his palace; only to threaten them: “If anyone of you, I swear in the name of God, goes against my wish that Ambode will be the next governor of Lagos state, the person is going to die inside this water. What you people cannot do in Onitsha, Aba or anywhere you cannot do it here. If you do what I want, Lagos will continue to be prosperous for you, if you go against my wish, you will perish in the water.”<br />
<br />
It mattered little to His Royal Highness that Ambode’s close rival was not an Igbo but Jimi Agbaje; another Yoruba man.<br />
<br />
Timeout<br />
<br />
The Yorubas and Ndigbo do themselves great disservice by seeing themselves as arch-enemies. Within the framework of Nigerian politics, this has limited the freedom of action of both ethnic groups. If the one is prominent in this political party, the other is more likely to align itself with another party. This means the one can always be manipulated against the other. Instead, the political space should be opened up by the possibility that the Yoruba and the Igbo can form an alliance. That eventuality is not implausible especially because they actually have common interests.<br />
<br />
Both groups prefer a Nigeria that practices fiscal federalism. Both want a country with a weaker centre. Both want a Nigeria that rewards merit, with a state-structure based on resource-control. Both groups want a Nigeria committed to self-determination. These are grounds for cooperation as opposed to discord. If the North is not to continue to take the South for granted, it must not be allowed to continue to operate in the confidence that the East and the West will always be divided.<br />
<br />
In politics, there are no permanent enemies and no permanent allies. Fifty years down the road, the politics of the Nigerian Civil War should not be allowed to continue to cast a shadow over Yoruba-Ndigbo relations. In the Second World War, Germany was the arch-enemy of France, but now both countries are the staunchest allies. Japan invaded the United States; but now both are on the same side. These turnarounds can and should be duplicated in Southern Nigeria.<br />
<br />
As a first step, there is need for a grand gesture. A well-publicised meeting between the Afenifere and the Ohaneze, where declaratory statements should be made about burying the hatchet. Thereafter, standing committees should be established to deal with flashpoints; such as the dismantling of Oshodi market in Lagos. The hatred between the Yoruba and Ndigbo has gone on for far too long.<br />
<br />

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr did not pick the country’s leading scorer at the Rio Olympics Oghenekaro Etebo for next month’s AFCON qualifier against Tanzania because the Portugal-based forward is injured.<br />

<br />
Etebo, who fired four goals past Japan in Nigeria’s opening game of the Rio Olympics, suffered a hamstring injury in the team’s final group game against Colombia and has therefore missed the subsequent knockout games against Denmark and Germany.<br />
<br />
Officials said Etebo will undergo a late fitness test ahead of tonight’s third-place match against Honduras in Belo Horizonte.<br />
<br />
A top official disclosed: “Rohr has said Etebo was not part of his first call-ups because he is injured. He needs all his players to be fit.<br />
<br />
“He’s a German and he will not take any chances on any of his players.<br />
<br />
“It’s the same reason, Alex Iwobi of Arsenal was not considered. He is nursing a thigh injury which he will not recover from till after the Tanzania match.”<br />
<br />
Both players will therefore be high on the call-up list once they are fit. </div>

<b><br /></b><b>On why she is so concerned about American politics:</b> What happens in America, just by virtue of being really the most powerful country in the world, will in some ways affect other people who are not necessarily Americans.<br />

<b>On the frustrating news coverage of the 2016 elections: </b>It’s sad reputable media houses have to say things like, ‘We have to make sure that President Obama did not found ISIS.’ There’s a part of me that wishes that Hillary Clinton had a proper opponent that she could really debate. It’s a disservice to her intelligence.<br />
<br />
<b>On how Hillary Clinton is scrutinized in the media:</b> People complain about Hillary not being charismatic, or say that she’s robotic – I think it’s her reaction to how she’s been treated, and a large portion of that treatment has been because she’s female. There’s a lot of talk about, ‘Oh, Hillary Clinton is so disliked.’ And I just keep thinking, ‘Well, she’s won all of these elections. Why are we not asking the question of who likes her and why she’s liked?’. I think the world in general, both men and women, has complicated feelings about women in authority and women in power. They say she doesn’t smile, they say she should laugh. There’s a lot that goes into the way that the public engages with her that would not happen if she weren’t a woman.<br />
<br />
<b>On her June short story for NYT called “The Arrangements”: </b>I don’t think [Trump] thinks of women as full and equal beings, so I wanted to kind of poke fun of that. It’s the women in his life who have their own motivations, who kind of humor him, and who know him more than he thinks he knows himself.<br />
<br />
<b>On the effects of Donald Trump’s controversial comments about women: </b>I think it’s perfectly fair to disagree with Clinton on her policies. But to call her a bitch? To talk about her being murdered? Even to talk about her personal life and her marriage, I just find it deeply misogynistic. And it’s not just making others to be comfortable in their misogyny – what it does is that it gives them an opportunity to say, ‘It’s not because we’re misogynistic. It’s not because she’s a woman.’ And that’s even more troubling.</div>

<i><br /></i><i>I remember our first TV, it was Black and White, and even photos we took then were black and white. I still have a bunch of them, with many colourful memories looking at them.</i><br />

<i><br /></i><i>Premium was placed more on morals and integrity than money and treachery.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><i>As a growing playful kid, I had many friends and toys. No, we didn’t have Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or yahoo yahoo. We had real friends and our parents knew who our friends were including their parents too.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><i>We used to visit our friends’ homes unannounced and enjoyed food with them. We never had to call ahead to ask for their parents’ permission to visit their home. Oh, there was trust amongst us; people were kinder and more sincere. Our hearts and souls were truly happy because people genuinely loved. Hence we never required any insurance policy, we watched over one another in the true spirit of good neighbourliness.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><i>The 50’s babies are very awesome people, very special. Some of us are still alive, horrified by the stench of our environment today, and what our country has been changed to. According to him, the woman washes clothes for a living and she even bought a generator to power the borehole.<br />

Desmond Elliot was impressed with her work ethics and decided to surprise her.<br />

Sweden reached the final after penalty shootout victories over the United States and Brazil in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.<br />

Described as a "bunch of cowards" by USA goalkeeper Hope Solo, Sweden's silver was their first Olympic women's football medal.<br />

Political bigwigs in both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are intensifying plans to form a broad based political platform to displace the two big parties in the country.<br />

Talks to form what is called a “third force” in political circles, according to findings, centre around whittling down the influence of the ruling APC and the opposition PDP. The plan is expected to fully mature next year.<br />
<br />
Moves towards that goal were said to have intensified during the disputed National Convention of the PDP which just ended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, this week.<br />
<br />
Sources close to the PDP told Tribune on Friday that the discussions that certain leaders of the party had expressed the sentiment that they should move out en masse from the PDP and go ahead to form the ‘third force’ with others in the ruling party a move which they reasoned, would ensure that the PDP is left to the Ali Modu Sheriff faction.<br />
<br />
One of the speakers at the meeting was quoted as saying that those behind Sheriff are “not up to the size of a local government” and that if the PDP is abandoned for them it would become a hollow structure.<br />
<br />
It was, however, learnt that an understanding had been reached at the closed parley that efforts aimed at forming another party with likeminded politicians from within the PDP and the APC should intensify quietly.<br />
<br />
A source close to the two parties indicated that “a working agreement is already in place to ensure that the aggrieved members of the APC and the PDP are brought together in a way that would decimate the ruling party and supplant it in 2019.”<br />
<br />
Sources confirmed to Tribune that some political bigwigs within the APC are already getting excited at the prospect of joining up with like minds to form a party in which they would have equal stakes.<br />

Also same day, his father, Michael Amuneke, will be handed a traditional title by the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness, Eze Richard Ngozichukwu Osuji, Ezeudo 1 of Eziokele Eziobodo Autonomous Community in Owerri West LGA, Imo State.<br />

The traditional ruler confirmed that the former Zamalek of Egypt and FC Barcelona of Spain winger who helped the Super Eagles to win the 1994 Nations Cup in Tunisia is being recognized for his path-finding role in positively bringing the community into global fame.<br />
<br />
"He's a path finder. He set the tone that has seen no fewer than eight footballers from the community grow into international fame," Eze Osuji told reporters.<br />
<br />
"Amuneke, through hard work, won the Nations Cup with the Super Eagles, he won the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Gold and as a coach, he won the U-17 FIFA World Cup.<br />
<br />
"This is a positive for our community.<br />
<br />
"Because of his leading role, the likes of his younger brother Kelvin Amuneke, Chidiebere Nwakali, Kelechi Nwakali, Chukwudi Agor, Promise Orji and Osinachi Ebere who are all from this community have followed his footsteps and have been and continued to prove good ambassadors of Eziokele Community in Eziobodo Autonomous Community.<br />

"So, the Eze-in-council strongly believes he has washed his hands clean and should dine with kings, hence our collective resolve to welcome him into the royal cabinet.<br />
<br />
"He's done this community proud and we feel recognizing him is a sure way to encourage and reward hard work, dedication, patriotism and commitment.<br />

“For playing the role of a positive path-finder, we decided to give him the title of Aka Welitere Mba 1of EziokeleCommunity because he has helped in no small way to lift the name of our community to national and international prominence”, the Royal Father explained.<br />

The Flying Eagles coach has been contacted and he has given his consent.<br />
<br />
"A delegation from the community was sent to Abuja to convey the message and ask for his consent and they returned with positive response," the traditional ruler said.<br />

He went on to reveal that arrangement is in progress for the coronation of and induction of father and son into the exalted traditional institution come December 27 but deplored the terrible condition of the only access road to the community.<br />

Mr. Adamu Asaph, a man who lives in Abuja has been arrested for stealing two packs of condom worth N3,000.<br />

According to reports, Adamu was on Friday arraigned before a Grade One Area Court at the FCT for the offence.<br />

Police prosecutor, A. Z. Dalhatu, said the condoms were property of Society for Public Health which were kept in the company’s custody.<br />

Adamu denied the charges.<br />
<br />
The presiding judge, Sadiq Abubakar, released him on bail in the sum of N5,000 and a surety that resides within the court’s jurisdiction.<br />
<br />
The case was adjourned to September 5th.

The Nigerian Navy has foiled an attempt by suspected sea pirates to hijack and abduct 13 foreign nationals on board a merchant ship leaving Nigeria for Cameroon.<br />

Briefing journalists on Friday at Bonny, Rivers, Capt. Mustapha Hassan, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Nwamba, who led the rescue operation, said the 13 foreigners were rescued unharmed.<br />

Hassan said the crew members, including the ship’s captain, were of mixed nationalities consisting of seven Philippinos, two Romanians, one Russian, one Polish, one Indian and one Croatian.<br />
<br />
Hassan said that troops were unable to apprehend the pirates due to poor visibility partly caused by torrential rain on the day of the rescue.<br />
<br />
He said that the navy under the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, remained committed to the safety of the nation’s waterways and maritime environment.
