Jese was allowed to gallop into the penalty area unchecked and Arsenal boss Wenger couldn’t hide his disappointment.<br />

“It was frustrating getting caught cold for the goal. Defensively there is no excuse. We gave them a cheap goal,” Wenger fumed.<br />

“We knew it was important not to make a defensive mistake. But we came out straight after half-time, were too sluggish and paid for it.<br />

“We gave them too much freedom in the middle. I was not convinced by our central defence today.”<br />
<br />
Arsenal’s careless defending wasn’t the only frustration for Wenger, who felt Arsenal were wrongly denied an equaliser when Alexandre Lacazette’s strike was ruled out for offside.<br />
<br />
Replays showed the officials got the decision correct, but that didn’t stop Wenger saying: “We were unlucky. I think we scored a regular goal that was given offside and it wasn’t offside. It’s a very easy decision.<br />
<br />
“It’s a difficult defeat to swallow. We had chances. We should have won the game comfortably.”<br />
<br />
After coming from behind to beat Leicester 4-3 in their season opener, this was a far less battling performance from Arsenal and Wenger admitted the loss was a big blow.<br />
<br />
“It was difficult to get the fluency. We tried but we couldn’t find the goal. There was lack of anticipation in the box with the second ball,” he said.<br />
<br />
“To lose a game like that is disappointing You don’t want to lose games that you should win.”<br />

Ekiti State Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose is famous for his controversies. On Saturday, ahead of President Muhammed Buhari’s arrival from London, Fayode declared himself as Nigeria’s president in-waiting.<br />

He spoke at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo –the Taraba State capital during the funeral service of former Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai.<br />
<br />
The Ekiti governor came when all other dignitaries were seated and the occasion had begun.<br />
<br />
He waved at the gathering, acknowledging cheers which briefly interrupted the service.<br />
<br />
He wore a white garment with brief arms and white half-shoe to match.<br />
<br />
As he strode in, some people initially had mistaken him for former President Goodluck Jonathan, in spite of their stark difference in body frame and height.<br />
<br />
Leading Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State and Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong to the podium to offer their condolences and tributes, Fayose stirred a melodrama. Twice, he called himself president in-waiting.<br />
<br />
He humorously thanked the moderator, GT Kataps for giving him the chance to step on the podium.<br />
<br />
“Thank you for giving me the chance. Maybe I am the president in-waiting,” he said. There was a thunder of laughter and cheers from the audience.<br />
<br />
As he made his speech, members of a women choral group began to make noise. “Women should not make noise, especially when a president in-waiting is talking,” he said. Again, he was cheered up by fans.<br />
<br />
He based his tribute on “courage and fearlessness” which he is known for, which were also attributes of late former Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai.<br />
<br />
But when it was the turn of the Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong to speak, he told Fayose that there was no qualm since his presidency was a waiting type.<br />
<br />
Lalong said: “Thank God you are a waiting president. You will wait for my President, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; he is returning today; you will welcome him.”<br />
<br />
It was a few hours after Lalong’s speech that President Buhari arrived the Presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.<br />
<br />
Lalong is of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Fayose is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br />
<br />
Fielding questions from newsmen, Fayose said he attended Suntai’s funeral because the deceased was an achiever, and particularly when Governor Darius Ishaku of the PDP won his election in the court he celebrated the victory in Ekiti too.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, on Saturday welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari back to the country after over three months of medical vacation in England.<br />

In a statement in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, the speaker expressed gratitude to Almighty God for granting the president healing and journey mercies back home.<br />

Dogara said that the president’s recovery and safe return attested to the healing power of God, in response to the fervent prayers of Nigerians “who prayed day and night for the president”.<br />
<br />
“It is now time for us all to continue to pray for the president for the perfection of the healing and divine rejuvenation to enable him steer the affairs of the nation in the right direction.<br />
<br />
“On our part, the House of Representatives wish to assure the president of our determination, support and commitment towards delivering on our promises to the Nigerian people as members of the same government.<br />
<br />

The welcome message of the party was issued by the Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, National Publicity Secretary, PDP National Caretaker Committee on Saturday in Abuja.<br />

“We believe that Mr. President is healthier now to assume his responsibility at the helm of the Country’s affairs.<br />
<br />
“We thank the Almighty for saving his life.<br />
<br />
“We pray that God grants him better health and understanding on how to rescue our poor economy and relieve Nigerians from the current hardship.”<br />
<br />
The President departed Nigeria on May 7 and returned on Aug. 19.<br />

Following the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria from a medical vacation in the United Kingdom, Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi has charged the ruling party to stop the blame game and focus on governance.<br />

In a chat with Vanguard Saturday, Makarfi said the PDP has always wish the President well, noting that having return, the buck passing game should now give way to governance.<br />
<br />
“We are glad he is back home. The official position of the PDP has been to pray for his quick and full recovery and to return home. Now that he is back, there should be no more buck passing within the government,” he said.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the PDP, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said the resilience of protesters eventually forced the hand of President Buhari to return home after spending 105 days in London.<br />
<br />
Reacting to President Buhari’s arrival yesterday, the ex- Minister commended the Charly Boy-led #OurMumuDonDo movement saying their offshore campaign in London, forced the President to change his mind to return home.<br />

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari returned home on Saturday after spending more than 100 days in London receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.<br />

His plane touched down around 4:35 pm (1535 GMT) at the international airport in Abuja, an AFP correspondent said.<br />
<br />
Wearing a black caftan with a cap to match, the 74-year-old left the aircraft unaided and was met by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other senior government officials, including ministers, security chiefs and state governors.<br />
<br />
He took a salute to the military guard of honour before he was driven in a convoy to the presidential villa.<br />
<br />
An enthusiastic crowd of supporters were at the airport and lined the roads to welcome Buhari back.<br />
<br />
He is set to address Nigerians on Monday morning, the presidency said.<br />
<br />
The president left for the British capital on May 7 with his prolonged absence causing tensions back home, where calls have grown for him to either return or resign.<br />
<br />
Buhari, a retired general who headed a military regime in the 1980s, has been dogged by speculation about his health since June last year when he first went to London for treatment of what his aides said was a persistent ear infection.<br />
<br />
He then spent nearly two months in London in January and February and said on his return in early March that he had “never been so ill”.<br />
<br />
In July, members of the ruling party and the opposition went to see him in London and even took pictures in an attempt to douse public anxiety.<br />
<br />
The health of Nigeria’s leaders has been a sensitive issue since the 2010 death in office of president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua after months of treatment abroad.<br />
<br />
Buhari’s main opponents in the 2015 election that brought him to power claimed he had prostate cancer. He denied it.<br />
<br />
Since August 7, there has been a series of protests in Abuja demanding that Buhari return or quit if he is incapacitated.<br />
<br />
The rallies turned violent on Tuesday when mainly ethnic Hausa traders pelted protesters with stones, prompting them to abandon their daily vigils.<br />
<br />
Deji Adeyanju, one of the protest organisers, told AFP on Saturday he was excited at the news of Buhari’s return.<br />
<br />
“We are happy that the president is coming back today because we have been vindicated,” he said.<br />
<br />
“We organised the rallies to make him come back so that he can continue to carry out the mandate on which he was elected in 2015.”<br />
<br />
Adeyanju said a planned protest in Lagos on Monday has now been cancelled.<br />
<br />
“There is no more demonstration as the president has acceded to our demand,” he said, warning however that protesters would “maintain close vigilance” of the government and urging Buhari to tackle rising insecurity, including the Boko Haram insurgency and militancy in the Niger delta.<br />
<br />
“More importantly, the president has to end mass poverty in the land and the fight against corruption has to be given a push,” he added.<br />
<br />
Dapo Thomas, a politics lecturer at Lagos university, said Buhari’s return would boost the central government’s clout.<br />
<br />
“Every policy, every decision, every project will now have a stamp of authority and legitimacy,” he said, adding that the anti-graft campaign would also be stepped up.<br />
<br />
“Buhari’s selling point is his integrity. He is very passionate about eradicating corruption from Nigeria and I think his return will re-invigorate the campaign,” he said.<br />
<br />
Buhari has been struggling to rid Nigeria of the endemic corruption that has blighted its development and helped tip the country into recession.<br />
<br />
High-profile members of the previous government have been arrested on corruption charges, sparking accusations of a political witch hunt — claims the current administration denies.</div>

The Borno Government on Saturday said it had constructed two model boarding primary schools to enrol children orphaned by the Boko Haram insurgency.<br />

The Commissioner of Education, Musa Kubo, told newsmen in Maiduguri that the school projects, located at Ngomeri-Barwee and 303 Housing estates in Maiduguri, had been completed.<br />
<br />
“Foreseeing the problem of the orphans left behind by the Boko Haram insurgency, the state government embarked on the construction of boarding primary and junior secondary schools.<br />
<br />
“The government is going to replicate the gesture in areas ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency,” he said.<br />
<br />
Kubo disclosed that the government had constructed 16 classroom blocks in Maiduguri under its school integration programme, designed to integrate children and adult into a formal school system.<br />
<br />
The commissioner added that the government had constructed various two-storey building schools with 30 classrooms each, to address congestion in primary and secondary schools.<br />
<br />
Kubo said the structures were built at Government College Maiduguri, Government Girls College Maiduguri, and Yerwa Government Girls College.<br />
<br />
Others were Government Day Secondary School, Zajeri; Junior Secondary Schools at Bulabulin, Ngomari and Bulunkutu.<br />
<br />
Kubo explained that the state government spent over N200 million on the projects and provided e-learning facilities to other schools in Maiduguri, Kaga, Konduga and Jere local government councils.<br />
<br />
He revealed that the government had also embarked on massive construction and rehabilitation of schools ravaged by the insurgents.<br />
<br />
The commissioner added that 22 mega school projects were still ongoing in liberated communities, pointing out that each of the school was designed with a 2, 000 pupils capacity.<br />
<br />
“All boarding schools which closed down for two years were re-opened and commenced operation for normal academic activities.<br />
<br />
“This year, the state government is paying N278m for indigent students sitting for the National Examination Council and Senior School Examination Certificate”.<br />
<br />
According to him, the state government in collaboration with UNICEF has conducted psychological training for teachers traumatized by the insurgency.<br />
<br />
Kubo said the government would implement the State Education Programme Investment Project in partnership with World Bank, to enhance community participation in school management.<br />
<br />
Over 15, 000 classroom blocks were destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents in the 27 local government areas of the state.<br />
<br />
Hundreds of students and teachers were also killed or abducted by the insurgents.<br />

Spanish police expanded a manhunt Saturday for a Moroccan man believed to be one of the perpetrators of twin terror attacks in Barcelona and another seaside resort that killed 14 and wounded around 100.<br />

With the country in shock after two vehicles ploughed into crowds of pedestrians, Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said the cell behind the carnage claimed by the Islamic State group had been “dismantled”.<br />
<br />
Police were still hunting for 22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub without confirming reports he was the driver who smashed a van into people on Barcelona’s busy Las Ramblas boulevard on Thursday.<br />
<br />
Thirteen people died at the scene and scores more were injured in scenes of horror witnessed by terrified friends and relatives, with locals and tourists laying flowers, candles and teddies in their memory.<br />
<br />
Investigators meanwhile were busy unravelling the terror cell of at least 12 young men — some of them teenagers — behind the Barcelona rampage and a second ramming attack with a car in the seaside town of Cambrils early Friday.<br />
<br />
One woman was killed and six other people wounded in that attack, with police killing five “suspected terrorists” who were in the car and arresting four others.<br />
<br />
Police also identified another three suspects linked to the attacks, two of whom are thought to have died in a blast on Wednesday night as they tried to make explosives at a house in Alcanar, a town some 200 kilometres (140 miles) south of Barcelona.<br />
<br />
On Saturday, police searched the home of an imam in Ripoll, a small town further north at the foot of the Pyrenees where some of the suspects lived, his flatmate Nourddem told AFP, without wanting to identify him.<br />
<br />
The El Pais daily, quoting police sources, said the imam could be one of the dead in the explosion.<br />
<br />
As the hunt for Abouyaaqoub gathers pace, Spanish police tipped off their French counterparts about a white van linked to the attacks that may have crossed the border, a French police source told AFP.<br />
<br />
– Suspects’ father ‘in shock’ –<br />
<br />
The IS group had initially only claimed the Barcelona rampage, but on Saturday its propaganda agency Amaq said its “soldiers” had also carried out the attack in Cambrils.<br />
<br />
Police in Catalonia said three of the suspects shot dead in Cambrils were Moroccan nationals, identifying them as Moussa Oukabir, 17, Said Aallaa, 18, and Mohamed Hychami, 24.<br />
<br />
Moussa’s brother Driss is one of the four arrested.<br />
<br />
Back in Morocco, their father Said was in shock, with tears in his eyes when he was told of the news while at a wedding, surrounded by relatives.<br />
<br />
“We’re under shock, completely devastated,” he told AFP, saying Moussa had been studying “normally” at school while Driss worked “honestly”.<br />
<br />
“I hope they will say he’s innocent… I don’t want to lose my two sons.”<br />
<br />
– Bigger plans –<br />
<br />
Police said they believed the suspects were planning a much larger attack, possibly a vehicle bomb, with the use of gas canisters.<br />
<br />
But they appear to have made mistakes, accidentally detonating Wednesday’s explosion.<br />
<br />
Security forces removed dozens of gas canisters from the house in Alcanar, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.<br />
<br />
“They were preparing one or several attacks in Barcelona, and an explosion in Alcanar stopped this as they no longer had the material they needed to commit attacks of an even bigger scope,” said Josep Lluis Trapero of Catalonia’s police.<br />
<br />
– High ‘level of coordination’ –<br />
<br />
Both attacks followed the same modus operandi with drivers deliberately targeting pedestrians in the latest in a series of such assaults in Europe.<br />
<br />
In July 2016, 86 people were killed in the French resort of Nice when a man rammed a truck into a crowd. There have since been other deadly attacks using vehicles in Berlin, London and Paris.<br />
<br />
Otso Iho of Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre said the Spanish assaults appeared to have “a much higher level of coordination than has been typically present in previous attacks”.<br />
<br />
It is believed to be the first time IS has claimed an attack in Spain.<br />
<br />
– Security increased –<br />
<br />
Among the dead and injured were people from three dozen countries, including Algeria, Australia, China, France, Ireland, Peru and Venezuela, Spanish officials said.<br />
<br />
Fifty-nine people are still in hospital, including 15 in critical condition, the Catalan interior ministry said.<br />
<br />
The Spanish government on Saturday decided to maintain the terror threat level at four out of a maximum of five, Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said, adding security had been increased in crowded places.<br />
<br />
Spain is the world’s third tourism destination and does not want to scare visitors away as it depends on the sector for its recovering economy.<br />
<br />
Until now, the country had been spared the recent wave of extremist attacks that have hit France, Belgium and Germany.<br />
<br />
It had even seen a surge in tourists as visitors shunned other restive sunshine destinations such as Tunisia and Egypt.<br />
<br />
But it is no stranger to jihadist attacks.<br />
<br />
In March 2004, it was hit by what remains Europe’s deadliest attack, when bombs on commuter trains in Madrid killed 191 people in an assault claimed by Al Qaeda-inspired extremists.<br />
<br />
Spain has also had to deal with a decades-long campaign of violence waged by Basque separatist group ETA, which only declared a ceasefire in 2011.</div>

The Commissioner of Police Abia, State Command, CP Adeleye Oyebade has declared the recently formed Biafra Security Service of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as illegal.<br />

Oyebade in a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital warned those behind the formation of the security network he described as “unlawful and illegal” to retrace their steps.<br />
<br />
He stressed that the Nigerian constitution recognizes only the Nigerian Police, Nigerians Army and the Department of States service, adding that any other group claiming to be providing security without an approval from constitution was illegal.<br />
<br />
The state police boss further stated that the full weight of the law would be brought upon the organizers of the said BSS who he noted were displaying videos of the “outlawed” security service on their social media network.<br />
<br />
Oyebade who stated that the police and other security operatives in the state would never fold their hands and watch unscrupulous elements to disrupt the relative peace in the state reiterated that the police in synergy with other sister agencies to make the state safe for business and economic activities to thrive.<br />
<br />
He also used the opportunity to parade suspected armed robbers, kidnappers, cultists amongst others who he said were still being investigated and would soon be arraigned in court for trial for commencement of prosecution.<br />
<br />
Amongst the paraded suspects was a car snatcher identified as Onyekachi Nwaogu of No. 7 Nwankwo Street off Obohia, Aba South Local Government Area of the state.<br />
<br />
Oyebade also disclosed that detectives attached to the D7 SCIID, Umuahia, but operating in Aba also recovered a Red coloured Toyota Camry with reg number SSM 521 TP with engine number 5X3249568 and chasis no. 4018G12K4TU74221 suspected to have been stolen from its owner.<br />
<br />
He appealed to Abians to always provide necessary information about the activities of hoodlums in their areas to the police and other security agencies in the state who he stated were ready to make the state unsafe for criminals to thrive.

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, today joined other world leaders and international organizations like the United Nations (UN) to insist that civilians must never be targets in conflict situations in commemoration of this year’s World Humanitarian Day.<br />

Saraki stated on his Twitter page — @SPNigeria — that the 8th Senate will continue to remain committed to supporting the nation’s Armed Forces in ensuring that families, aid workers, and other civilians that are caught in conflict situations are not affected by violence.<br />

He said: “As the World commemorates World Humanitarian Day 2017, we must all take a second to reflect on the successes that we have recorded in routing out the rampant violent extremism that plagued our nation just a few years ago.<br />
<br />
“We must also never forget that hundreds of thousands of Nigerian families and millions of lives are still affected by the residual impact of terrorism and the Boko Haram menace. Many survivors are still in the process of recovering. While many families will never again be the same.<br />
<br />
“On this note, today, Nigeria and Nigerians must join the United Nations and the rest of the world in reaffirming that civilians like host communities and aid workers must never be targets in conflicts. Innocent lives must never be victims. Vulnerable communities should never be attacked.<br />
<br />
“As we do this, we must all work towards ensuring that where we are going as a nation, will be better off than where we have been.<br />
<br />
“This is why the 8th Senate will continue to remain committed to supporting the executive and our Armed Forces as they rout the last elements of the insurgency.<br />
<br />
“We will also continue to support the humanitarian recovery and reconstruction efforts, to ensure that Nigeria’s over two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are resettled and rehabilitated.<br />
<br />
“As a nation, we have our work cut out for us. However, we shall overcome,” the President of the Senate said.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">This revelation was made in a statement issued by Force PPRO, CSP Jimoh Moshood on Friday.</div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">The statement said, “The gang leader has built a house in Kano from the huge foreign currencies he stole during a wedding of a Very Important Personality last year in Abuja.<br />
“The Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team trailed and arrested the above mentioned suspects after complaints of stolen phones from important personalities who attended a prominent wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State on the 8th July, 2017.<br />
“They were arrested in different states of the Federation namely: Ogun, Edo, Abuja and Kano States. The exhibits listed above were recovered from them.<br />
“The house built in Kano State from the huge foreign currencies the gang leader stole during a wedding of a Very Important Personality last year in Abuja has been identified.<br />
“The suspects confessed to the crime and admitted to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of the offence.<br />
“The suspects confessed further that they specialise in impersonating journalists in order to gain access into venues of VIPs events/occasions to steal Handsets, Money and defraud high profile persons and unsuspecting members of the public at the venues of events in major cities in the country.<br />
“Investigation is being intensified to arrest other suspects at large. All suspects will be arraigned in court on completion of investigation.”</blockquote>

Zimbabwe has declared President Robert Mugabe’s birthday on February 21 a national holiday, a state daily reported Saturday, honouring the veteran politician in power since 1980 who opponents accuse of brutal repression and devastating the economy.<br />

The declaration of the Robert Mugabe National Youth Day came after lobbying by the ruling ZANU-PF party’s youth league.<br />
<br />
“In declaring this day, we would like to highlight to our youths the values and principles so brilliantly displayed by President R.G. Mugabe which have resulted in an exemplary life that our youths can emulate,” state-owned Herald newspaper quoted home affairs minister Ignatius Chombo as saying.<br />
<br />
He said the cabinet made the decision after years of lobbying by the ruling party which also said it wants the country’s main airport named after Mugabe.<br />
<br />
Last week the cash-strapped government announced plans to build a $1bn Robert Mugabe university, joining several other facilities named after him including the government’s school of intelligence, a main street in the capital Harare and the highway to his rural home.<br />
<br />
Mugabe, now 93 years old, first came to power after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain. He says he plans to contest elections due next year despite his advanced age and concerns over his frail health.<br />
<br />
Zimbabwe’s economy has been run down, with output halved since 2000, while many basic services have collapsed and government salaries use up more than 90 percent of all public revenue.<br />
<br />
Opposition parties are in talks to try to unite and field one candidate to oppose Mugabe in the next presidential poll.<br />
<br />
Past elections, however, have been tainted by violence and intimidation by ZANU-PF operatives.<br />

More than a month after the Supreme Court laid to rest the protracted leadership tussle which posed an existential threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), there are indications of fresh cracks within the party despite the declaration of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished’ by the party chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.<br />

A group, The Concerned Members of the Peoples Democratic Party yesterday scored the leadership of the National Caretaker Committee low, even as it accused Makarfi of failing to reconcile aggrieved members after multiple assurances to do so.<br />

In a statement signed by Honourable Bernard Mikko, the group said it has been looking forward to fence mending, stressing that when the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of Sheriff, the former Borno State Governor ensured that reconciliation and unity were pursued vigorously to give the party strength and cohesion.<br />
<br />
“After the Port-Harcourt Appeal Court Judgment affirming the legitimacy of the then National Working Committee (NWC) led by Senator (Dr.) Ali Modu Sheriff; the Governor Dickson Committee set out to work on genuine and comprehensive reconciliation and came up with, a template that was acceptable to majority of members, urging for political solution rather than legal conclusion. The then National Working Committee led by Senator Sheriff declared a policy of “No Victor, No Vanquished” where no member of the party will be subjected to any form of discrimination on account of his /her stand between the two contending parties. The genuine peace efforts of the then NWC led to a resounding electoral success in Osun West Senatorial election with the then National Chairman leading the campaign.<br />

“The Supreme Court Judgment of July, 2017 has foreclosed further struggle in the national leadership of the party. The desire of all legal and peace loving members of the party is to see a leadership that will forge a lasting political solution through robust consultation to ensure true reconciliation. Majority of members of the party see the Supreme Court judgment as an opportunity for the party to come together as one, guided by the constitution of the party and the rule of law. The expectation is that those saddled with the responsibility of running the party will not put personal interest and ambition at the front burner. They are to bring all members together under one united strong umbrella to consolidate on our recent gains,” the group stated, adding that so far, the NCC is factionalizing the party, rather than uniting it.<br />

“Unfortunately and ironically, the six-man caretaker committee under the chairmanship of Senator Makarfi is rather celebrating and pursuing the fractionalization of the party. The NCC goaded and guided by some ambitious presidential aspirants had shown clearly the paths of constitutionality and rule of law is not theirs to follow,” alleged the group, adding that the “Supreme Court judgment is rather seen as a license to victimize millions of party members. All efforts of the NCC are clearly geared towards side-lining those closely or even remotely associated with the then NWC members led by Senator Sheriff from the party’s affairs and are subjected to ridicule, opprobrium and sometimes verbal and physical assault.”<br />

They also expressed worry over the dissolution of Executive Committees (Excos) of the party in some states, saying the move was done to please some godfathers.<br />
<br />
“Against the provisions of the party’s constitution and in violent disregard of same, the six-man caretaker committee under the leadership of Senator Makarfi processed and pursued the dissolution of legally elected Excos of States like Adamawa and Borno, and unconstitutionally side-lined the elected Excos of Yobe; Sokoto, Benue and positioned people who were not elected to satisfy the ambition of some ‘god fathers’. It is clear that the Supreme Court Judgment finally decided on the leadership tussle between the Senator Sheriff led NWC and the Senator Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee (NCC) and not State Excos duly elected to serve four (4) years in April 2016.<br />

The statement further read: “To the utmost surprise of many, the fallout of the non-elective convention of August 12th, has thrown up more issues of grievous concern. Rather than reconciliation, we are seeing division and exclusion. Rather than unification; antagonism and threats are the clear objectives. Rather than pursue the paths of justice and fair play; we see impunity has assumed a more dangerous dimension.<br />

“Even in the face of our private and public declaration of commitment to the party, we have observed with reservation official party statements threatening amnesty, as if we have committed offences against the party. We also hear loud sounds of ex-communication; threats of outright suspension and expulsion; and extra-disciplinary measures by those who consider themselves as the political conquerors!<br />
<br />
“We therefore appeal to true lovers of democracy, the civil society and the media to join hands with us to ensure that all forms of impunity lawlessness and blind ambition are controlled and dispended with.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria is a constitutional democracy and acts that are capable of destroying our Multi-party system must be avoided. As major stakeholders in the current political dispensation, we will not remain silent and docile while the democratic norms and values we cherish are being systematically destroyed.<br />
<br />
As at the time of filing this story, the response of the NCC could not be obtained as text messages to the mobile phones of Makarfi and Adeyeye were not replied.</div>

 Immediate past governor of Edo state and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, has met with the 20 APC lawmakers in the state House of Assembly urging them to avoid actions capable of creating political tension in the state.<br />

At the meeting which held at the GRA residence of the former governor Tuesday night, Oshiomhole stressed the need for the lawmakers to ensure that they give support to the developmental strides of the governor Godwin Obaseki led administration so he can fulfil his electoral promises to the people of the state.<br />

Both the ousted Speaker of the House, Justin Okonoboh and his Deputy Elizabeth Ativie and the new leadership led by Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto and his deputy, Victor Edoror and other APC lawmakers were in attendance.<br />
<br />
The former governor had last Tuesday rushed back to Benin from Abuja following the change of leadership in the state House of Assembly. Upon his arrival, he met with the state governor Obaseki and members of the state Executive of the party, led by its chairman, Anslem Ojezua, before meeting with the lawmakers.<br />
<br />
Oshiomhole who expressed his disgust about the penchant of lawmakers in the state in changing its leadership stressed the need for lawmakers and their leaders to always work in harmony just as he urged the new leadership to carry members along in their dealings.<br />
<br />
It was learnt that the governor was said to have warned the lawmaker against actions capable of affecting the fortunes of the party in the state, commending the lawmakers for their loyalty to the party despite the change of leadership.</div>

Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has called on the Federal Government to assist state governments in the country to raise bonds to pay the the gratuities of state pensioners who voluntariy retired from the service to avoid contributary pension scheme.<br />

Aregbesola also explained that the state government is incapacitated to pay pensioners in the state gratuity which is about N5bn stressing that the state government was not insensitive to their plight.<br />

Aregbesola made the call while playing host to the Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, Mrs Sharon Ikiazor who paid him a courtesy visit at the state secretariat on Monday.<br />
<br />
He explained that the mass retirement of workers from the state civil service at the end of 2012 because they did not want to join the Contributory Pension Scheme placed a gratuity burden of about N5bn on the state.<br />
<br />
Aregbesola noted that the state has been struggling and managing to pay salaries and pension because of the continuous decline of the nation’s economy as a result of the instability in the crude oil market.<br />
<br />
The governor said: “It’s a pity we have found ourselves in the situation we are. Because many of them (pensioners) chose to leave the service at the end of 2012 because they did not want to join the contributory pension scheme, the state has a gratuity burden of about N5bn.<br />
<br />
“As at the time they were leaving, the state was already struggling to pay salaries as a result of the sharp drop in the revenue accruable to the federal government.<br />
<br />
“It started with a drop of about N600 million and it later jumped toN1bn. If we could not meet up with their gratuity in 2012, how could we do it in 2013 or 2014 when it was getting tougher? Or is it going to be now when there is still a lot of instability in the crude oil market?<br />
<br />
Aregbesola said the call for the FG’s intervention in the payment of gratuity for the state pensioners through provision of bonds became imperative because state governments in the country are under serious financial burdens.<br />
<br />
According to Aregbesola, the bonds which will be paid back by the state government with ease will go a long way in relieving the states of financial burden, ensure prompt payment to pensioners and as well boosting the nation’s economy as money will be in circulation.<br />
<br />
The governor disclosed that a lot of states across the federation who have joined the Contributory Pension Scheme are finding it difficult to offset the huge gratuity of pensioners accumulated as a result of the mass exodus from the service because they did not want to join the new pension regime.<br />
<br />
He said:”Because many of the workers did not want to join the contributory pension scheme, a lot of them exited the service at the same time, thereby making state governments to have huge gratuity responsibilities upon them.<br />
<br />
“I believe the Federal government can assist the state governments in raising bonds which will be paid back with ease. With the bonds, the state governments can pay the gratuities of these pensioners, thereby injecting money into the economy and boost the economy in return.<br />
<br />
“I believe we must do all we can to ease the sufferings of the people and this is a good avenue to inject money into the system. I urge the Federal government to assist in easing the burden of the states concerning this issue because I believe they have the capacity to do it”.<br />
<br />
Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, Mrs Sharon Ikiazor stated that the directorate is in the state for the continuous pension verification exercise of federal pensioners.<br />
<br />
“We are here to carry out the usual verification exercise of federal pensioners and we are satisfied with the hospitality we have received”, she said.</div>
