Boko Haram: 6 killed, 11 abducted in Adamawa

Six people including a police officer were reportedly killed in the aftermath of an attack in Garkida town of Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State in northeast Nigeria.
It was also reported that eleven youths were abducted by the attackers who looted food and medicine stores in the town.
The attackers also burnt down construction vehicles and houses during the onslaught.
According to residents, they were forced to flee the town into the mountainous areas.

A resident who identified herself as Rebecca disclosed that the insurgents stormed the town when the people were making last minutes’ preparations for Christmas.
“They came into the town with about five vehicles and started sporadic shootings, forcing the villagers to flee in the ensuing confusion.
“We could see them from afar in our hideouts as they continued to loot, ravage houses, pharmaceutical stores even as domestic animals were not left out,” she stated on phone from the area.
Another resident who shared his experience said, “I departed Yola on the 24th of December to celebrate the Christmas in my sweet home of Garkida. Little did I know a bitter experience awaits me.
“I had a safe drive to Garkida, but on entering the town, I was welcomed by an Army truck filled with armed personnel speeding towards the entrance of the town. stopped by the market, trying to enquire what was happening, to my dismay, everyone was running for his dear life.
“I managed to stop someone and asked, his answer sent a paralysed feelings down my spine, “they are coming again”. Without much ado, I knew it was Boko Haram.”
Residents of Garkida said they hid in the mountain and watched the terrorists engage in fierce battle with the Army and the vigilantes. “We could see them also packing cartons of drugs from the hospital store. Moments later, we saw fighter jets dropping bombs and neutralising them.
According to residents, “The following morning, 25th, we began counting our losses. A police officer was shot dead. 5 other corpses were later found, two of which are believed to be workers of the ongoing water project, and the others, youths.
“Trucks belonging to road project contractor were all raised down, hospital pharmacy was broken and all medications looted, hospital ambulance was vandalised, cars belonging to people were burnt, 11 of our youths were taken into captivity. ”
There has been no official confirmation from the police or the military, but sources said that three air force fighter jets have been on routine bombardment of the areas as they continue to attack the insurgents.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp sees no reason why Mohamed Salah would want to leave the Premier League champions but says he would not keep the Egyptian forward at the club against his will.
Salah told Spanish newspaper AS in an interview this month that he admired Real Madrid and Barcelona, fuelling talk in the British media that he was looking to move on.
“I think the only reason to leave Liverpool at the moment is the weather. What other reason could be there?” Klopp said at a news conference.
“This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, we pay good money … we have a sensational stadium with outstanding supporters.

“You cannot force people to stay but that is it … We make changes and bring players in and if a player wants to go then we cannot, probably not hold him back; it’s just that I would not understand why somebody would want to go.”
Salah was left on the bench for last weekend’s 7-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace, but still scored two goals when he came on to help the leaders maintain their fine form.
He became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League earlier this month in a 1-1 draw at Denmark’s Midtjylland.
Klopp said Salah’s comments about the Spanish sides were not an indication of his desire to leave Liverpool.
“If you ask any player in the world who is not playing for Barcelona or Madrid if he can imagine playing there one day and he said: ‘No, Spanish football is not for me,’ why would he say that?
“Mo is a very important player for me obviously but this story around is not.”
Liverpool are top of the table with 31 points from 14 games, four clear of second-placed Leicester City.
They face West Bromwich Albion, who are second from bottom, on Sunday.

The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has explained why he commends and criticises the security forces in the frontline of the battle against Boko Haram insurgency in the state.
The governor, in a Christmas message by his spokesperson, Mallam Isa Gusau, also asked Nigerians to reflect on how soldiers, the Civilian Joint Task Force, local hunters, vigilantes, and other security forces fighting Boko Haram terrorists would celebrate Christmas.
“At the same time, we should ask ourselves how thousands of yet-to-be-resettled internally displaced persons and fellow Nigerians taking refuge in foreign countries are also celebrating the Christmas, lined up for food in camps and host communities,” he said.
Calling on the security forces to remain committed to safeguarding lives and property, the governor added, “We will continue to accord far-reaching support to security forces, especially those who have shown their dedication and gallantry.

“We will commend and reward, and where there is the need to raise voices of concern, we will do so on behalf of our citizens who we swore to protect. I believe in the carrot and stick approach, and this is based on my personal principles and my training in the academics.
“Critical thinking is the foundation of academics, and in this, the philosophy is to look at the opposite sides of every case study. From the academic point of view, there is never one side to any case under study and this is why I commend, I reward, and I also criticise.”

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has enjoined his people to do all they can to stay alive amid the second wave of coronavirus ravaging the country and the world at large.
During his 2020 Christmas broadcast, Gov.Emmanuel urged them to observe the safety protocols prescribed by the World Health Organisation and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control against COVID- 19 to avoid embarking on another lockdown in the state.
The governor, however, likened the year 202O to ‘a bumpy ride on a gallop-filled rural road’ and reassured that with togetherness, love and steadfastness, the people would come out stronger.
He said, “fellow Akwaibomites, let us press forward by doing all we can to stay alive and beat the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic. As you may already know, we are currently experiencing the second wave of the pandemic, but as we had succeeded in stemming the rate of infection when it first hit our shores, I ask you to join hands with us again to beat this second wave.

“The use of facemasks, social distancing, regular hand washing, hand sanitisers are protocols that have worked in reducing infections. Let us remain committed to applying these protocols. If we adhere to these simple but effective rules, there may be no need for us to impose another lockdown, but if we observe that these rules are flouted, then we may have no other option than to put the State under lockdown.
“This year was like a bumpy ride on a gallop-filled rural road. But God kept His word in Isaiah 43:2 “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has commended frontline workers for their efforts during the pandemic, expressing during her annual Christmas television broadcast how “moved” she was by the “quiet, indomitable spirit” shown by people over the last year.
“Every year we herald the coming of Christmas by turning on the lights,” the Queen said, noting that this year people were unable to celebrate in the usual way.
“But we need life to go on,” she added. “A year that has necessarily kept people apart, has in many ways brought us closer.”
According to CNN, much of the UK is currently under stringent coronavirus restrictions due to a winter surge in cases, preventing many families from gathering at Christmas.
<a name='more' id="more"></a>“Of course for many, this time of year will be tinged with sadness,” the Queen said.
“Some mourning the loss of those dear to them, and others missing friends and family-members distanced for safety, when all they’d really want for Christmas is a simple hug or a squeeze of the hand.”
She added, “If you are among them, you are not alone and let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers.”
The 94-year-old also acknowledged those from other religious backgrounds who were unable to celebrate their own religious holidays over the last year due to the pandemic.
The Queen said she had been inspired by stories of those who helped people in need and said the people of the UK and the world had risen to the challenges of the year.
She went on to say the country owed a “debt of gratitude” to those who worked in frontline services and in the scientific fields.
The British monarch traditionally celebrates Christmas at Sandringham, her English country retreat, where she is usually joined by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but Covid-19 has prevented them celebrating at the estate this year.
The Queen is instead spending Christmas “quietly” this year at Windsor Castle with her husband Prince Philip.
The royal family was directly hit by the pandemic this year with both the heir to the British throne Prince Charles and his son Prince William testing positive for the virus.
The Queen and Prince Philip have spent most of their time in 2020 at Windsor Castle, having moved away from Buckingham Palace during the first wave of Covid-19 in the spring.
Her remarks ended on a note of positivity. “The Bible tells how a star appeared in the sky, its light guiding the shepherds and wise men to the scene of Jesus’s birth,” she said. “Let the light of Christmas — the spirit of selflessness, love and above all hope — guide us in the times ahead.”

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma has urged Nigerians to observe all COVID-19 safety protocols as they celebrate the birth of Christ.
Uzodimma gave the advice on Friday in Owerri in his Christmas message to Imo people.
He urged them to pray for the healing of Nigerians who had contracted the virus.
Governor Uzodimma advised Imo residents to recommit themselves to making the state better while ensuring that the “flame of the divine light that Christ symbolises remains aglow’’.

He advised Christians not to lose sight of the reason for the festivity, which is God’s love for mankind and urged them to shun hatred and divisive acts.

The Lagos State Government has made it mandatory for prospective couples to obtain clearance from the state government to hold weddings with 300 people in attendance.
This was contained in a notice by the state government on Friday, titled, ‘Stay Safe At Home’.
“Weddings and social gatherings must not exceed 300 people with prior clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission,” the notice partly read.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, confirmed the development in an interview with newsmen on Saturday morning.

He said the state government is concerned about large gatherings and big weddings as the state experiences a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Mojola told our correspondent that the clearance is free and prospective couples will have to go on the Commission’s website to input the details of their weddings, adding that safety marshals will be deployed to such events to enforce all Covid protocols to prevent any possible spread of the virus.
The director-general said, “If it is not a big wedding, maybe 50 people, 100 people, we are not really concerned. But if it is a large gathering with 300 people and above, it is mandatory that you get a clearance. It is a free clearance; no payment whatsoever.
“The process is not difficult, you go online and input the details of the wedding. There might be a requirement to have safety marshals on ground, depending on the size of the wedding.
“The move is to put in place some control measures to prevent super-spreader weddings and hold people accountable. It also helps us in planning. For instance, if we are envisaging 500 guests at a wedding, there will be more attention on them. We will do our regular patrols and visit such places to ensure that they comply with safety protocols.
“We will also forward those locations to our brothers in LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) and LAMATA (Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority) to be on the lookout that there is a big wedding and many cars will be coming into a neighbourhood so as to aid efficient traffic management.”
Earlier, the Commission said security agents have been mandated to ensure full enforcement at weddings and other social gatherings, adding that no one would be deemed to be above the law.
“Any and all breaches of these regulations and public health protocols will lead to immediate closure (of event centres) as well as attract heavy fines, and any other sanctions and penalties deemed fit, in line with the Lagos State Infectious Diseases Control Regulation 2020,” it had stated.
Lagos, which is one of the epicentres of coronavirus management in Nigeria, has recorded over 26,000 infections and more than 200 associated deaths since the outbreak of the virus in the country.
The state government recently returned Covid-19 protocols at religious centres and also banned a number of social places from holding gatherings as the country battles the second wave of the pandemic.

Actress, Eniola Badmus, has revealed why she responds to people who constantly troll her online because of her size.
In a recent interview, the actress said, “It is not everything I can talk about but sometimes, some things get to me. I have developed a tough skin over time but I am also human. When things become overwhelming, I have to express myself and pour out my thoughts. Everyone has a threshold on different matters. The way people go about body shaming is hilarious. I did not come into the industry as a skinny girl. I have always been a chubby girl. It is now when I am trimming down that the comments are coming.
“I know I have not seen the end of this and I cannot control people’s opinions. However, I think it is important to caution body ‘shamers’. The pressure that comes with these things is too much and could lead to depression. I tell people that I can never be depressed, no matter how much they troll me. I would rather put my energy into partying. But, some people cannot handle it. For instance, the only reason bloggers pick up one’s story is when they notice that a fan has slandered one or made uncouth comments and one replied. Some people then go to the comments section to laugh. They feed on that negativity. Families and society also need to be more considerate because they are guilty too. Some family members play around it by calling one ‘orobo (fat)’. I just tell people to leave me alone. Some of the responses I gave to hateful comments about my weight were not because they got to me to the point of committing suicide. It was just to shut up toxic people. People on social media feel they have a right to talk to one in certain ways. You need to see the volume of messages I get every time.”

Speaking about what she has gained by being in the public eye, the actress said, “Some of the things I have enjoined by being a public figure include the fame and accolades that come with it. That is not to mention the opportunities, followership and admiration from well-meaning people. Sometimes, I even get things for free. I did not know I would be popular while I was aspiring to become an actress and moviemaker. I also did not foresee the stress. I plunged myself into acting because it was my passion but I did not know I would end up having sleepless nights or having innumerable commitments.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the best ever Premier League transfer ahead of Thierry Henry and Eric Cantona.
Ronaldo came out on top in a countdown that the Transfer Show panel chose on a special Christmas Day programme.
The Portugal captain was one of four Manchester United players in the top 10 along with Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney.
United signed Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon for £12m in August 2003. During six seasons at Old Trafford, he won eight major trophies including three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

During a stellar career, he has scored more than 750 goals, won 30 major trophies, five Ballon d’Ors and two Best FIFA men’s player of the year awards.
Thierry Henry came second. Arsenal signed him in the summer of 1999 for £11m from Juventus. During eight seasons at Highbury, he became an Invincible, won two titles and broke the club’s goalscoring record.
Some star names were controversially left out of the list including Manchester United defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Nigeria on Friday recorded seven hundred and twelve, 712, new cases of COVID-19 infections in the country.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, made the announcement on its Twitter page.
Lagos State and FCT recorded the highest numbers at 388 and 77 cases, respectively, while Kwara State followed with 39 cases.
The public health agency also revealed that COVID-19 related deaths now stand at 1,246.

Two Manchester City players, Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus have both tested positive for coronavirus, the club confirmed on Friday.
Two members of the club’s staff have also tested positive, but the club chose not to reveal their identities.
Defender Walker and striker Jesus will now miss their Premier League matches against Newcastle, Everton and Chelsea.
The duo is likely to return for City’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United on January 6.

“All four personnel will now observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine,” City said in a statement released on Friday morning.
“Everyone at the club wishes our colleagues a speedy recovery over the Christmas period ahead of their return to work, training and competition.”
The positive tests come as the UK experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases, with the 39,036 confirmed on Thursday marking it the second-highest daily total since the pandemic began.

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have killed 2 bandits at Dyom Village in Borokiyo Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
It also foiled an attempted armed attack on passengers travelling from Bayelsa State to Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Christmas day.
Enenche said the operations were executed on Christmas Eve.
<a name='more' id="more"></a>The statement read, “In continuation of efforts to rid the North Central Zone of armed bandits and other criminal elements as well as to ensure a peaceful Yuletide season, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE intensified the tempo in their operations.
“On 24 Dec. 2020, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE deployed at Udei general area, while on routine patrol along Makurdi – Lafiya Road foiled an attempted armed bandits’ attack on passengers travelling from Bayelsa State to Jos.
“Similarly, own troops deployed at Zaki Biam and Ukum, while on fighting patrol, responded to a distress call on bandits’ activities at Dyom Village in Borokiyo Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. Troops swiftly mobilized to the scene where they had contact and engaged the criminals, forcing them to flee. However, troops followed the bandits in hot pursuit and neutralized two of them.”

Suspected hoodlums Friday morning laid siege on Sabo area of Osogbo and injured some traders and others in the vicinity.
Although policemen had been deployed to the scene when our correspondent visited the area, gunshots fired by the hoodlums were still heard a few metres away from where the policemen were stationed.
A resident, simply identified as Amusa, told our correspondent that the attack started late Thursday.
Amusa said the hoodlums had claimed to be mourning a colleague with a candlelight procession before they suddenly launched attacks on traders.

He said a yet-to-be-identified trader was killed in the process, adding that the hoodlums also, on Friday, continued their onslaught and attacked more people in the area.

Channels TV reports that he died on Friday, December 25 at about 2 am.
Ejiro was popular for blockbuster movies in the 90s.
The younger brother to another renowned film maker, Zeb Ejiro, produced movies like Silent Night, Blood Money, Deadly Affair, among several other notable movies.
It is believed he passed away after a seizure.
