President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria is working on an ambitious Energy Plan towards reducing the energy shortcomings by the year 2030.<a name='more' id="more"></a>
Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman in a statement late Friday evening, said Buhari spoke in line with Nigeria’s role as a Global Theme Champion for the Energy Transition, the theme of the High-Level Dialogue on Energy on the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The president said: “Nigeria’s commitment to a just transition is reflected in our ambitious Energy Compact, which includes the Government’s flagship project to electrify five million households and twenty million people using decentralized solar energy solutions.
“This is a major first step towards closing our energy access deficit by 2030.
“Nigeria’s commitment 
is also reflected in the development of our Energy Transition Plan, which was developed with the support of the UK COP26 Energy Transition Council.”
The Nigerian leader called for support from developed countries to unlock the financing needed to accelerate a just energy transition for all.
“The focus of our discussions on transition must now evolve how we help countries develop detailed energy transition plans and commitments to mobilize enough financing to empower countries to implement those plans,” he said.
According to him, the scale of financing required for Nigeria to achieve net-zero amounts to over US$ 400 billion across the Nigerian economy in excess of business-as-usual spending over the next 30 years.
“This breaks down to US$ 155 billion net spends on generation capacity, US$ 135 billion on transmission and distribution infrastructure, US$ 75 billion on buildings, US$ 21 billion on industry and US$ 12 billion on transport.”
The president, however, said that gas would continue to have a big role to play before it is phased out, explaining that solid fuel cooking is still wreaking havoc in Africa“As a global leader on the energy transition, it is imperative that I flag a major risk to development that stems from the current narrative around the energy transition, particularly on the role of gas and the lack of financing.
“Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan has laid out our roadmap to reach net-zero and highlights the scale of the effort required, which includes the development and integration of renewables into current grid infrastructure at tremendous scale and electrification of all sectors.
“This is challenging for any country, especially a developing country. On our development objectives, gas will have a key role to play here for some years before being phased out,” he said.
President Buhari noted that these plans must also take into account, the provision of access to electricity and clean cooking solutions for those in Nigeria and around the world currently without access.
According to him, an often-overlooked point is the essential role of gas in addressing clean cooking challenges.
“Globally there are 2.6 billion people who lack access to clean cooking – which is unacceptable.
“Even more concerning is that solid fuel cooking in Africa causes almost 490,000 premature deaths annually, making it the second-largest health risk in Africa,’’ he further maintained.

A student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State has landed in the hospital following an attack on him by an unguarded dog.
The victim, Sadiq Opeyemi, 18, was attacked by the dog which was said to belong to another student, Abass Olagunju, 24, a 400-level Animal Science student at the Faculty of Agriculture,
It was gathered that students within the axis came to the rescue of the victim but the dog had already bitten his private parts.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the institution’s Students Union Government, Oluwafemi Adegbeyeni, stated that the victim, a 100-level student of the Animal Science department had been taken to the hospital.

He added that the dog had been a threat to people living in that area, stressing that students had been warned to always secure their dogs to prevent such incidents from happening.
Following the incident, the police were informed after which the dog was arrested.
The Police Spokesperson in the state, Funmi Odulami, said the dog bit the upper thigh of the victim, adding that the attack also affected the undergraduate’s scrotum.
While disclosing that the victim had been stabilized, she added that the victim was immediately rushed to Inland Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko where he was treated for the attack.

Rights Activist, Omoyele Sowore has lashed out at the Senate of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, in Ondo State, over moves to rusticate students caught indecently dressed.
The activist said universities across the world are places of research and learning and not where moral codes are enforced.
Authorities of AAUA had in a circular some days ago warned that it would no longer turn a blind eye to undergraduates of the institution engaged in indecent dressing.
The state-owned institution in the circular had vowed that indecently dressed students would be rusticated for one semester.

But Sowore who fumed at the development emphasised that the content of a person’s character cannot be defined by the nature of their dress.
While calling for the disbandment of the Senate of the Institution which he described as jobless, Sowore said Nigeria is a circular state where such rules cannot be forced on people.
“Nigerian university senate members have only produced rigged elections results in the last 20 years or more. They haven’t had many academic breakthroughs, check the rankings of the best 1000 universities in the world tell me if any one of them has dress codes, except in strictly religious nation-states.
“Nigeria is a secular state. I spent two years studying at Columbia University in New York City, in front of the main admin building you would find female students on the stairwell sunbathing (tanning) during the summer months, topless. You have no business asking them why they’re doing so. It is their right.
“I’ve heard of nude colonies in some universities in California, yet they produce the cell phones you use and most of the hardware and software that drives your life. They are the same adults in Silicon Valley.”

Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye housemate, Whitemoney, has assured Queen that nobody in the house can take him away from her.
He said this in the early hours of Saturday, day 63 of the show, as the duo laid together in the garden, after the Jacuzzi Party.
Whitemoney advised Queen that though they’re not married, the latter should be loyal to him, as no housemate is in competition with her over him.
Apparently, Queen was getting intimate with some of the male housemates in Whitemoney’s presence during the Jacuzzi Party and the latter wasn’t happy about it.

When she did same last week, Whitemoney had warned her, telling her that all her “extra kissing” was a “stupid act.”
Speaking on the recent occurrence, he said, “I know we’re not dating and we’re not husband and wife. But if you want to be with me as your companion, no problem.
“As you said you want to have such a relationship with me, my sister, you will be focused. As I am now, I cannot say I want to kiss Angel or grab her boobs. I wouldn’t do all that. Even now, if loyalty was a person, you’re supposed to be beside me.”
Queen said, “Oh, so you now know what loyalty is. You feel my pain now. I hope you feel the pain I felt a few weeks ago.”
Apparently, Queen was talking about Whitemoney’s involvement with Jackie B before the latter got evicted.
During the period, Queen had told Whitemoney that he should only give his attention to her and no one else.
Responding to the ongoing conversation, Whiteminey said, “I’m not feeling any pain. I’m normal. There’s no pain.”
He assured her that the past occurrence will not repeat itself saying, “Who is your competition now? Who wants to ‘collect’ me from you in this house? Nobody.”
Whitemoney further advised that if she wants to get intimate with other guys, she should do it behind his back.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has denied releasing any suspected Boko Haram sponsor.
According to him, the report of the alleged release of 300 suspects is a ” misrepresentation of facts relating to the ongoing investigation of terrorism financing suspects in Nigeria”.
This was contained in a statement by the Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Umar Gwandu, on Friday.
The statement was titled, ‘No Suspects of Boko Haram Financiers Released, your allegation spurious – Malami’.

It read, “The report of the alleged release of 300 suspects by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice is a malicious misrepresentation of facts relating to the ongoing investigation of terrorism financing suspects in Nigeria.
“It is important to reiterate at this point that the fight against the menace of terrorism is an ongoing operation characterized by intelligence gathering, arrest, investigation, and prosecution.
“The contradictions in the story can best be understood from the point of the analysis of the affidavit that was said to have been procured by the online platform as deposed before a court in relation to the subject matter.
“By their own showing, the Office of the Attorney General has deposed to an affidavit on account of which an order of a Court was obtained, seeking for the continued detention of those financiers that were alleged to have been in custody.
“This, by implication, established that the matter is effectively submitted to the jurisdiction of the court.
“It is common knowledge that where a matter is submitted to a Court of law, it is only through the judicial process that any subsequent action can possibly be taken.
“The question then arising from the claim of the report is this: When was an application filed in Court by the office of the attorney general by which the release of the purported suspects was procured?
“It amounts to approbation and reprobation for the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to, in one breath, obtain an order seeking for continued detention of the alleged financiers of Boko Haram and at the same time having them released.
“If the interest of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation was to have the people released, the idea of approaching the Court for an order of the court seeking for extension or time to have them in custody couldn’t have even arisen in the first place.
“One needs to know by which communication or correspondence or application was their release procures since the matter is already pending before the court of Law, and they were taken to custody on account of Court order.
“It does not add up for the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to procure the release of someone that has been in custody on account of Court order without approaching the Court. The public, in essence, is entitled to know which application was it that was subsequently filed to procure the release financiers.
“When was the application filed, before which court was it taken and which lawyer is it that has taken the application and where is the Court order on which account the release was effected.
“We are also amazed that an allegation of bribe-taking is made. The public is entitled to know who the originator of the bribery was. Who facilitated the giving of bribe? Who accepted or collected the bribe on behalf of the Attorney General? Who were the vendors and facilitators?”

A former Special Adviser to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, has said the All Progressives Congress, APC, won’t give its presidential ticket to a candidate from the Southeast.
Yakasai said there are no indications that the APC presidential candidates would come from the Southeast.
The Kano State APC chieftain said the party may preferably settle for a Southsouth presidential candidate.
He explained that APC may opt for the Southsouth if the Southwest fails to clinch the ticket.

Yakasai, who spoke on Arise Tv morning show said: “As far as I am concerned, I have not seen any indication that the APC is going to field any candidate from the Southeast and I don’t think that is going to happen.
“Even if Southwest does not get it, to be honest, I don’t see the APC giving it to anybody from the Southeast, maybe the South-South but definitely not the Southeast.”
Yakasai also said the Southeast governors and elites lacked unity to push for the presidency.
He also noted that the region lacked the numbers that would produce a Nigerian president.
“In the Southeast, they keep agitating individually but they have not come together collectively to show a unified front to the rest of the country that they are indeed ready for this presidency. There is no unity among the governors, there is no unity among the political elite and there is no unity among the followers. And unfortunately for them, they do not have the numbers, which means that they need the support of one or two regions”, Yakasai added.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday warned the general public to disregard the trending online alert alleging a recruitment screening exercise by the Corps.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, issued the warning in a statement he signed and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
Kazeem reported that the attention of the FRSC was drawn to the fake news making rounds that the Corps’ recruitment screening exercise would commence from September 24 to September 29.
He said, “The corps, by this medium, warns the public to shun all false alerts regarding job screening exercises.

“The exercise had already been conducted on September 6 and concluded on September 12.”
According to Kazeem, the FRSC implores applicants and the general public to avoid desperate moves that might bait them into the snare of deceitful people.
He said, “The Corps expressly disowns all liability for extortion of any form arising from patronising these fraudsters, or reliance on any information contained in the social media pages they’re using to spread this misinformation.
Kazeem added that the FRSC could be reached through its toll-free line for any valid information.

Amnesty International on Saturday, appealed to the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency set up a panel to investigate a military airstrike that accidentally killed nine people in Yobe State.
Recall a few weeks ago, a Nigerian Air Force jet said to have been targeting the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) terrorist group, accidentally hit Buwari and other communities in Yunusari LGA of the state.
However, in a statement on Saturday, Mallam Isa Sanusi, the media manager of Amnesty International in Nigeria, appealed to the federal government to set up a panel to investigate the incident.
He further called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the recent military airstrikes that killed at least 9 people and injured 20 people on 15th September, when Nigerian Air Force fighter jets targeted several villages in Yobe state, including Buwari, Bulabulin, Matari, Malari and Kajinjiri.

“Similarly, on 26 August, a wooden passenger boat ferrying passengers and their goods from Port Harcourt to Bonny in Rivers State was targeted by a military helicopter, injuring several passengers.
“Amnesty International is calling for full reparations for the relatives of those killed in the strikes, as well as a remedy for other victims in previous military airstrikes – including compensation, restitution and rehabilitation.” He said.
”The Nigerian military must abide by international law in future military operations and protect the lives of civilians.
He further added that ”anyone suspected of criminal responsibility should be prosecuted in a fair trial. Survivors and families of the victims should be kept informed of the progress of the investigation and be given full reparation.
He expressed worry that previous incidents in the North East of Nigeria and Niger Delta region were met with deafening silence and outright denial by the military while devastated families suffer in silence.

Stanley Ekezie, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has accused Gov Hope Uzodinma’s administration of leaving the people of the state with broken hopes and failed expectations across all sectors.
The party chieftain said Imo people cannot wait to sack the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls regretting that the atmosphere has become gloomy as a result of the disappointing scorecard of the incumbent governor.
Ekezie, who is also the Southeast zonal ex-officio of the PDP, stated this on Friday in Owerri, the state capital, while receiving the Forum of Imo Editors and Columnists at his residence.
He expressed confidence in the level of political awareness in the state saying Imo people are fully prepared to boot out the APC administration from power come 2023.

The entrepreneur said infrastructure in the state has decayed while salaries of workers and pensions of retirees are mired in endless controversies.
Speaking further on the innovations within the PDP, Ekezie revealed that the leading opposition party in the state has been repositioned for resounding electoral victories, and added that the PDP’s outstanding performance during the seven months of the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha as governor has earned the party overwhelming goodwill among Imo people. He enthused that the party will ride on the unbeatable performance back to power.
According to the Imo-born real estate mogul,” the Ihedioha administration opened a floodgate of opportunities in the state, provided security and turned around the economy.”
He dismissed claims that some members of the party are defecting to the APC and insisted that no person who is relevant to the successes of the PDP at the polls in Imo has left the party.

Samuel Phillips, the police sergeant who shot Monsurat Ojuade dead in Lagos has been dismissed.
Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu announced the sacking in a statement on Friday.
“The suspect will be charged to court for murder”, the spokesman noted, recalling CP Hakeem Odumosu’s assurance of justice.
Phillips’ fate was decided after an orderly room trial instituted over the killing of 18-year-old Monsurat.

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State has warned that it will no longer turn a blind eye to undergraduates of the institution engaged in indecent dressing.
The Senate of the institution threatened to rusticate any student involved in any form of indecent dressing.
The authority of the institution, which gave the stern warning in a circular, disclosed that failure to comply with the directive would attract rustication from the school for a semester.
The circular with reference number AD/ REG/CIR/58/VOL. VI/309 was signed by the registrar of the school, Olugbenga Arajulu.

According to the circular, indecent dressing that would no longer be allowed on campus include, “wearing of skimpy skirts and blouses; leaving cleavages open by female students; and wearing of braids or dreadlocks, earrings, nose rings, tattered jeans, sagging etc by some male students.
“Any student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, who violates the above Senate decision on indecent dressing is deemed to have committed a misconduct and he/she shall be sanctioned accordingly. Please be guided.”

Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, pro-Biafra agitator, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has described his client as a political prisoner who has committed no offence.
Ejiofor made the remark while maintaining that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is not unlawful as ruled by Justice Binta Nyako in 2017.
In a statement he issued on Thursday, after his meeting with Kanu, he expressed hope that the IPOB leader would get justice soon.
According to Ejiofor: “I had an extensive interaction/chat with our indefatigable client- Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu during today’s routine visit to the National Headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS).

“It is on record that by the ruling of Justice Nyako delivered in 2017, His Lordship while ruling on our application, held that IPOB is not an Unlawful Organisation. This Ruling of the Court was not appealed against, neither was it set aside by any Superior Court.
“We are not relenting in our efforts to ensure that justice is done to our Client, he will be freed and in no distant time, because he has committed no offence known to law. He is at best, a Political Prisoner. Nevertheless, Victory will be ours in the end. I see!”
The pro-Biafra agitator was first arrested in 2017.
Upon his arrest and arraignment, Justice Nyako had granted Kanu bail.
However, he jumped bail and moved to Europe where he continued with his secession activities.
He was, however, rearrested in 2021 in a country believed to be Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria.
Upon Kanu’s return to Nigeria, he was locked up in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said that some of the fiercest critics of his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, dine with him at Aso Rock in Abuja.
He disclosed this in a piece titled, ‘Buhari, FFK, And The Quality Of Mercy’.
According to Adesina, the defection of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress last week has caused “not a small ruckus” because of his past acerbic comments against Buhari.
He said though Fani-Kayode had said “unpardonable and unprintable” things about Buhari, his family and the APC, the President displayed “mercy” by receiving the controversial ex-minister into the party at the Villa last week.

The presidential spokesman wrote, “Naturally, a lot of loyal APC members are hopping mad that FFK was readmitted into the party. And not only that, he got back at the highest level. Not at his ward in Ile-Ife, Osun State, but the triumphal entry was at the Presidential Villa, with President Buhari himself as the host.
“I understand the umbrage taken against the development by teeming APC supporters. It’s the natural thing to do. But then, having vented spleen, raised dust and almost brought down the roof, the next thing is to isolate the issues dispassionately. With the bile displayed towards President Buhari and his family over the years, how did the man find the grace to have received FFK? How was he convinced? Who did the convincing? What were the extenuating factors? How? When? Why?
“By agreeing to the readmission of FFK to APC as the leader of the party, and hosting him at the Villa, President Buhari displayed amazing capacity to forgive, to show mercy, and let bygones be bygones. How many of us can do that? Not many.”
“I have worked with the President for over six years. And I have seen amazing things in terms of accommodation and capacity to forgive. I have visited him at home many times in the evenings, only to find at dinner table with him people who had been abusing his forefathers on television earlier in the day.
“This President has a capacity to forgive, and forget. And make peace. That was what he displayed in the case of FFK. Nothing short of divine attribute, which me and you should covet and seek to approximate,” Adesina added.

Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, has criticized the standard of refereeing in LaLiga, after he and Frenkie de Jong were both sent off during a 0-0 draw against Cadiz on Thursday.
De Jong picked up two yellow cards in the second half, while Koeman was given his marching orders in stoppage time for something he said to the fourth official.
The draw was Barca’s second in the league this week, following Monday’s stalemate against Granda at Camp Nou, and further increases the pressure on Koeman.
Koeman will now serve a touchline ban for Sunday’s game against Levante, when another bad result could spell the end of his tenure at Barca.

The meeting of the Zoning Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for National Offices of the Party ahead of the October 30-31 National Convention ended in Enugu, on Thursday, with the members of the committee adjourning till next week for conclusion of their work.
Addressing newsmen after the closed-door meeting held at the Government House, Enugu, the Chairman of the Committee and Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, said that “we had a fruitful meeting and we adjourned to conclude next week”.
Earlier in his welcome address, Gov. Ugwuanyi clarified that the committee has no mandate to zone political offices such as President or Vice President of Nigeria.
The governor explained that “our Committee is strictly limited to the PDP National Executive Offices to be contested at the 2021 PDP National Convention scheduled for the end of October, 2021”, stressing: “We have no mandate to zone political offices such as President or Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi maintained that the PDP remains the most credible platform to deliver good and accountable governance to Nigeria, adding that the work of the committee will contribute immensely “in this deliberate search for National Officers of our Party that will help PDP achieve the lofty ideals and goals of our founding fathers”.
He therefore encouraged members of the committee to be frank, open and constructive in their proposals and debates, and also exhibit consistency with the enormity of their mandate.
“The membership and leadership of this committee have been carefully selected as it is composed of very experienced, competent and eminent Nigerians who are desirous of repositioning the PDP to play its role not just as the main opposition political party in Nigeria but to build a party that offers alternative policy proposals and hope to Nigerians that there is still light at the end of the tunnel”, Gov. Ugwuanyi said.
Members of the committee present at the meeting include the Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom who is the Deputy Chairman, the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Barr. Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed who serves as Secretary, former Presidents of the Senate, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, and former Governors of Niger, Ekiti, Sokoto, Jigawa and Adamawa states, Dr. Muazu Aliyu Babangida, Ayodele Fayose, Attahiru Bafarawa, Sule Lamido, and Boni Haruna, respectively.
They also include Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, Rt. Hon. Sunday K. E Okoye, Chief Dan Orbih, Chief (Dr.) Ali Odefa, Amb. Mrs. Dr. Kema Chikwe, Chief Osita Chidoka, Barr. Chidi Lloyd, Senator Bassey Ewa Henshaw, Senator Emmanuel Nwaka, Engr. Donatus Udeh, among others.

A team of policemen, operating along Katsina-Jibia road have arrested a mother, her daughter, alongside another woman, for concealing petrol in their bag to take to bandits in the forest.
The Spokesman, Katsina Police Command, SP. Isah Gambo paraded the three suspects at the state police headquarters on Thurday.
The suspects, who confessed to have committed the offence in contravention of the executive order and other extant laws of the federation, are all said to be residents of the Malali Quarters, in Katsina metropolis.
“These women that you are seeing here were arrested along Jibia-Katsina road with these bags pretending to be normal travellers going to Magama in Jibia, a border town with Niger Republic.

“What they do is engaging in smuggling of petrol to bandits in Jibia forest but nemesis caught up with them and they were arrested with these exhibits.
“These exhibits you are seeing are not just travelling bags but they are loaded with petrol meant to be taken to the forest for the bandits.
“The suspects are Umma Bello, 45 years of Malali Quarters here in Katsina metropolis, Nusaiba Muhammad, 16 years and Dija Umar 50 years all of the same address.
“It may interest you to know that the suspects while confessing to have committed the offence also revealed that many of them in the area are involved in the business.
“What they do is to engage the services of ‘okada’, motorcycle riders to buy the fuel for them in their motorcycle tanks from filling stations and then take it back to Malali quarters for them where they siphon the fuel from the motorcycle tanks and then arrange them into bags like these to avoid the eagle eyes of the security agencies while taking it to the forest to sell to bandits,” SP Isah Gambo said.

Ex-Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, has explained how the apex bank stabilised the naira against the dollar for five years from 2009 to 2014.
 
Moghalu, who was a deputy governor at the apex bank between 2009 and 2014, made this known in on Thursday.

During his time at the apex bank, Moghalu deputised Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was CBN Governor from June 2009 to February 2014.
 
Both Sanusi and Moghalu were at the apex bank during the administrations of the late President Umaru Yar’adua and then-President Goodluck Jonathan.
 
During the period, the naira steadied around N150/$1. However, the naira has maintained an unprecedented downward trend in the last six years since the beginning of the administration of the current President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
 
The naira now trades at N570/dollar at the parallel market while it trades around N412/$ at the I&E forex window which is the only official rate recognised by the CBN.
 
The downward trend of the naira had fueled calls for the sacking or resignation of Emefiele by some political groups including the Peoples Democratic Party. They blamed Emefiele, who has been CBN governor since June 2014, for poor monetary policies.
 
However, speaking on Thursday, Moghalu blamed the downward trend of the naira on the activities of speculators and lack of autonomy of the apex bank.
 
When asked how he and Sanusi stabilised the naira against the dollar for years, Moghalu revealed that the apex bank worked on investors’ confidence during the period.
 
He said, “We worked very hard on the matter of the exchange rate because we wanted to create a very investment-friendly climate for both local and foreign investors in the Nigerian economy and we knew that one of the keys to that was an exchange rate that was stable.
 
“So, we made sure that you could bring in your money for investment in Nigeria and take it out, 100 per cent, it’s yours, with no real complications, that gave investors’ confidence.
“We, of course, had high oil prices at that time which also was helpful. So, the reserves were never really above the early 40s, in terms of billions of dollars.
 
“It was just the way we managed the Central Bank’s own responsibilities in the economy in general – the banking reforms that we did; we really cleaned out the system, we stabilised it and we opened it up for business.
 
“We laid the foundation for the fintech boom that we are enjoying today. We introduced a lot of payment system innovations like the Bank Verification Number when I was deputy governor of operations and responsible for the payment system reforms.
“It’s a whole set of factors that contributed to our success.”
 
The ex-deputy governor of the apex bank lamented that the CBN has lost its autonomy to the political class and has little or no investors’ confidence.
 
According to the former presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party in the 2019 election, the government of the day does not respect the independence of the CBN and it becomes a choice for whoever is the governor whether to play along or assert his or her independence and bear whatever cost given the kinds of political leaders that are in the country.
 
“There was confidence in the Central Bank during my tenure as deputy governor of the bank. I am not sure it is the same today and there are many reasons for that; one of the reasons is that a Central Bank should endeavour to maintain its autonomy.
 
“When people begin to perceive that the Central Bank has become too close to the government and by this case, too close to the Presidency, it erodes business confidence around the country, it erodes investors’ confidence. This is also part of the problem.
 
“We maintained our independence scrupulously; we did not allow politicians to give us instructions about how to run the bank,” he added.
 
Continuing, Moghalu said that by pumping more forex into the market, the CBN is depleting the foreign reserves of the government, noting that economic diversification and exportation were the way out of the FX crisis in the country.

The Osun State Police Command has paraded five suspects allegedly behind the murder recorded in Modakeke between 12th May and 20th August, 2021.
It would be recalled that two Modakeke indigenes were in June killed while on their way to farm, while another five persons were gruesomely murdered in August this year at Alape village.
The five male suspects arrested included Akingbala Olakunle, aka All Stand, Owoniyi Segun, aka Agbede, Shina Adeyemi, Awotinde Elijah and Daramola Muideen, aka Ede.
They were paraded at the Headquarters of the police command, with weapons recovered from them, which included a double barrell gun, five live cartridges, a knife, a cutlass and an axe.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, the first two murdered individuals were Modakeke indigenes.
He said it was was as a result of land and farm disputes between Modakeke and Ile-Ife.
Olokode explained that the incident generated anger in the mind of Modakeke youths, prompting some hooligans from Modakeke who armed themselves with different weapons, to take revenge against Ife indigenes, presumed to be behind the killing.
“The police arrested the situation and obstructed their ugly attempts. Several peace meetings were held, and undertakings made to prevent a repeat occurrence,” he said.
The Osun Police boss revealed that surprisingly on 20th August, 2021 at Alape village, five men which included, Oladele Ismaila, Oladele Afeez, Taye Animashaun, Shina and one other were going to their farmland but unknown gunmen ambushed and killed them.
“This unwarranted and barbaric murder provoked the Modakeke indigenes, because they presumed that the people killed were their people.
“They decided to take revenge on the Ife communities but their efforts were thwarted by the prompt intervention of the Police and other sister security agencies.
“The five deceased were not from Modakeke as erroneously insinuated by the people of Modakeke.
“This ugly incident made the Police to swiftly swing into action that led to the arrest of five key suspects as highlighted above. Some other suspects were arrested by the Police.
“They are undergoing investigation to ascertain the degree of their involvement in the case. Adequate security measures have been put in place by the Police to ensure this act of lawlessness is put under control.
“The suspects will be charged to court at the completion of investigation for prosecution,” he added.
Olokode also assured that the command will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the state is free from all kinds of criminal elements.
In his words, “Members of the public are enjoined to continue to trust and believe in us towards policing efficiently and effective protection of their lives and properties. The bad ones, criminals are similarly advised to either repent now, relocate, or be shown the red card.”

The Nigerian government has announced that Boko Haram sponsors have been identified and are being held.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York.
The AGF said the government was detaining “high profile individuals” responsible for funding terrorists’ activities in the country.
Malami assured the Buhari administration was determined to take stringent measures to counter insurgency.

“We have succeeded in identifying those that are responsible for funding terrorists”, he said.
“We have blocked the leakages associated with funding and embarking on aggressive investigation that is indeed impacting positively in term of the fight against terrorism.
“Investigation is ongoing and for the purpose of investigation, I wouldn’t like to be pre-emptive in terms of making disclosures that would have the effect of undermining the successes we are recording.
“One thing I can tell you for sure is that whatever we do in terms of detention and in terms of arrest is indeed backed by judicial process.
“We have indeed obtained a legitimate court order taking into consideration what we have presented before the court; the court eventually exercised its discretion in terms of granting orders that we can have them in custody,” he said.
The Nigerian authorities are receiving knocks for failing to publicize names of Boko Haram financiers after the revelation by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has delivered his verdict on Timo Werner and Kepa Arrizabalaga following their performances in his side’s Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties in the Carabao Cup following a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Werner had scored the only goal for Chelsea during normal time, while Kepa pulled off a number of good saves in the match, including a big one to help Chelsea win the shootout against Aston Villa.
“We brought him into a situation where he can score, this is what we want, and then it’s on him to score. That’s why he is here. It’s the best feeling for a striker to score,” Tuchel told Chelsea’s website.

“Kepa is very strong at penalties. He has good experiences in shoot-outs so we focused on that, and tried our best.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the family of the Presiding Justice of the Kano Division of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mukhtar Hussain.
In a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday, Buhari described Justice Hussain’s death as a huge loss to the country.
The President said that Hussain had left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s judicial, political and administrative landscapes.
He said, “Justice Hussain’s passing is a huge loss to the country. The country’s jurisprudence, governance and politics were enriched by his rich knowledge and a strong conscience.

The Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has insisted that the Southern part of Nigeria has qualified people to rule the country.
Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, said power must shift to the Southern part of the country in 2023.
Ajayi, who spoke to newsmen, was reacting to a remark by the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, on the North producing President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.
Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, NEF spokesperson had said the North was not ready to relinquish power in 2023.

Baba-Ahmed had said the heavens would not fall if the North produces the next president, stressing that those against it should exit Nigeria if it happens in 2023.
The NEF spokesman had disclosed this at the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series in Zaria, Kaduna.
Reacting, Ajayi said Baba-Ahmed’s remark showed that he is a sectional thinker.
He said: “Such an expression can only come out of the mouth of somebody who does not give a hoot about the other part of the country. I understand that Baba-Ahmed was a retired Permanent Secretary at the Federal level, and I expect that a person of that caliber would be nationalistic in nature and in his utterances.
“It’s not surprising that what is in his mind is what is coming out of his mouth; this has shown clearly that this man is sectional in his thinking.
“Saying that heavens will not fall means he does not wish the country well, that is why he is saying such.
“Our position is that, for Nigerians to have a sense of equity, harmony, and belonging, it will be fair that every part of the country partakes in the governance of the country. So, the presidency of Nigeria must shift to the Southern part of the country in 2023.
“And before that election, Nigeria should be restructured. We are sure of it and it has to happen.
“So, the Baba-Ahmeds of this world cannot be the ones to determine for all Nigerians; that will not happen.
“There is no part of the country that does not have people qualified to rule, which means that if we are to go by merit, every part of this country can produce a president.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, told Maxima Zorreguieta, Queen of The Netherlands, that there have been significant changes in Nigeria in recent years.
Buhari assured the Queen, who last visited Nigeria in 2017, that if she came again, she would see a lot of differences.
He spoke at a bilateral meeting at the margins of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The President said Nigeria was well aware of her limitations, and thus prioritized the provision of infrastructure.

“Without infrastructure, development would be limited, so we put emphasis on building roads, rail, and power. We have a comprehensive plan, and we are doing our best”, he noted.

Queen Zorreguieta lauded what she called “the huge effort” made by Nigeria to combat coronavirus, saying; “you spent a great part of your GDP”.
The monarch said she had a huge commitment to Nigeria and promised to make more contributions.
“You won’t be alone. We will be there along with other partners”, she informed the Nigerian leader.

The Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju has kicked against the appointment of Senator Ifeanyi Ararume as the chairman of Board, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
The activist in a statement described Ararume’s appointment as a travesty.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who serves as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, had approved the appointment of Ararume as chairman of board of the newly incorporated Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
Adeyanju, while reacting to the appointment of Ararume as chairman of Board said, “The All Progressives Congress, APC we believe has more qualified technocrats and well experienced players in the oil and Gas industry as members that could have been appointed as the chairman of Board of the country’s mainstay source of revenue”.

“The Nigeria’s oil and gas sector represents about 65% of government revenues and such sensitive sector ought to be superintended by a competent person who has the requisite knowledge and experience of the industry instead of appointing Ararume whose only major achievements is being a Senator and managing a supermarket.
“Ordinarily, after the incorporation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as a business entity, one would have thought that the president would appoint a business oriented technocrat with a vast knowledge in oil and gas to pilot the affairs of the company but alas, the rudderless government of President Muhammadu Buhari’s led Federal government opted for a politician with zero experience in oil and Gas industry.
“The appointment of Ararume whom former president Olusegun Obasanjo in 2011 described as the “Big Thief” has brought to the fore, President Muhammadu Buhari’s penchant for outlandish and unconventional methods of appointing cronies and men of questionable characters.
“We call on the President to as a matter of urgency, reverse the appointment of Senator Ararume as chairman of Board, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as it goes against reason and logic,” he added.

He alerted other housemates who helped him to search the whole house but to no avail.
Saga, who looked very frustrated and unhappy, was seen in front of the diary room demanding that Biggie opens the door just incase Nini is stuck inside.

Cristiano Ronaldo has toppled Lionel Messi at the top of Forbes’ list of the highest-paid footballers in the world.
Ronaldo, 36, will earn $125m this season, while Messi will earn $110 million.
Both players had made transfer moves this summer.
Ronaldo returned to his old club, Manchester United from Juventus, while Messi made the switch from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo’s Red Devils deal will see him earn £51.25m in basic salary and add-on bonuses, with the rest of his package coming from endorsements, including sponsorship.
Although Messi has a higher basic salary and bonus structure than Ronaldo – earning £54.94m per year – but he only collects £25.6m in annual sponsorship payments, compared to Ronaldo’s yearly sum of £40m. 
Messi’s total earnings in Spain was £95.24m per year, reports Mail Online. 
Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Messi’s PSG team mates sit third and fourth on the earners list.
Neymar signed a new £54.95m a year contract in May, the same amount as Messi in terms of basic salary.
Mbappe has refused a new contract. The old one expires next year.

Recall that Biggie during a diary session told Nini to use a secret emergency exit upstairs and leave the house for 24 hours.
 
She was instructed to keep the secret and not disclose it to anyone.
 
Biggie gave her the task after Nini broke down in tears and complained about being exhausted.

No fewer than three suspected human parts dealers have been arrested by the operatives of Amotekun corps in Oyo State.
It was reported that the suspects were arrested for allegedly killing a 73-year-old man.
It was gathered that the three suspects connived to kill Adeniyi Adebisi Samuel in Ibadan.
The suspects include Olalekan Akande, Ismail Muraina and one other.

They were paradedat by Amotekun Corps at Dandaru Area of Mokola in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The State Deputy Commandant of Amotekun, Kazeem Akinro, confirmed that the suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of the deceased.
He said, “We heard a report about some suspected ritualists yesterday evening.
“We started the investigation and we arrested the first suspect in his house who later took us to the other suspects.
“The suspects confirmed that they kidnapped a man along Amuloko-Akanran road, slaughtered him and removed his head.
“The head was then given to one Abdulrasheed Olanrewaju who needs it for rituals. We apprehended Abdulrasheed but he had already burnt the head into ashes”.
Akinro said one of the suspects, Olalekan Akande confessed that he used charm to kidnap the victim.
He added that the suspects would be handed over to police after investigation is concluded.
“We are still investigating and once we are done with our own investigation, we shall hand the case over to the police afterward”.

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Musa Sarkin Adar, has suggested what would happen to Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the party, if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to join APC.
Adar, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Sokoto State, said Jonathan would give Tinubu a good run for the APC presidential ticket if he joins the party.
The APC chieftain, however, pointed out that Tinubu stood a better chance to clinch the APC ticket because the party has the majority in the Southwest.
Speaking on Arise Television, Adar said the region where APC holds the majority stands a better chance of clinching the presidential ticket.

He said: “The odds first favour the southwest which had populated the APC because five states are under the leadership of the APC. The South-South has Cross River state and the South East has Imo and Ebonyi.
“Any zone wishing to clinch the presidential ticket should go back to the drawing line and restrategize.
“You don’t expect when the majority of you are in the other party and you are thinking of getting the presidential candidacy of the political party simply because you are making agitations.
“My take is that Tinubu still remains the frontline presidential aspirant of the APC from the South generally.
“Then, of course if President Jonathan joins the APC, he is going to give Tinubu a good fight.”
There are speculations that Jonathan may defect to the APC and possibly clinch the party’s presidential ticket.
Reacting, APC had said the former president would be welcomed into its fold if he decides to defect.
Amid these claims, Jonathan has remained silent.

Following the incessant unrest in Plateau State, the police have arrested one Mr Sanusi Lauwali in Bauchi State over alleged kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities.
The suspect, while being paraded by the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sylvester Alabi at the Bauchi State command headquarters, disclosed that he had killed several people during religious crises in Jos, Plateau State.
He revealed that whenever there is any religious crisis in the state, his undisclosed boss would give them guns to go to Plateau and kill Christians.
The 27-year old suspect could not specify the number of persons he had killed during the religious crisis in the state but, however, said the victims are not up to 10.

He said, “I cannot remember how many people I have killed, they are not up to 10, but I think they are at least five people.
“I killed these people during religious crises in Plateau State. These are the people I shot and killed.”
Asked where he gets the gun he uses to kill, he said: “It is our boss that gives us the guns.”
He added, ”I live in Tunga village outside Jos, but anytime there is a crisis, he will send us to the place to go and kill Christians.
“I ran away and went back to my hometown in Ningi (Local Government Area), for about one year now”.
Recall that the State was recently plunged into an unusual security crisis following the massacre of some travellers by gunmen yet to be identified.
Several states had evacuated their citizens hitherto studying in Jos pending when normalcy would return, as some schools remained shut.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the security and welfare of its members.
It has also disclosed that to ensure this, the scheme has liaised and is in constant communication with security agencies and other stakeholders with the view of ensuring the safety as well as addressing other essential needs of the corps members in order for them to have a fulfilled service year.
This disclosure was made by the Director-General of the NYSC Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim during the terminal parade and closing ceremony of the 2021 Batch B, Stream II orientation on Tuesday at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Ede.
Represented by the Osun State Coordinator, Ayodele Adegoke, Gen. Ibrahim also implored the corps members to shun all forms of social malaise like drug abuse and trafficking, cybercrime and advanced fee fraud.

For the security of the corps members, Gen. Ibrahim warned against night journeys stressing that statistics by relevant agencies had shown that night travel is a major risk factor for road traffic accidents.
“It is now mandatory for all corps members in transit to always cut short their trips from 6 O’Clock in the evening and pass the night at military barracks and other locations officially designated as safe.
“You are also advised to board vehicles at approved motor parks to avoid falling prey to criminals disguising as commercial vehicle drivers.”
He also reminded them that the scheme frowned at partisan politics and thus engagement in local politics in their host communities is a no-go area.
Ibrahim called on the corps members to see themselves as image-makers for the families, the NYSC and their institutions of graduation noting that in all circumstances, they should always be conscious of the implications of their actions inactions.
While commending the 1393 corp members for complying with the COVID-19 prevention in camp, the DG warned that the virus is still around and advised them to continually be on guard everywhere they found themselves.
“I also encourage you to present yourselves for the COVID-19 vaccination and if already taken, 2atch out for invitation for the second jab where applicable.
“In addition, I charge you to help in sensitising members of the host communities about preventive measures including the need to accept vaccines.
Of the 1393 corps members that were deployed to Osun State in the Batch B, Stream II, 833 were females while the rest 560 were males.

Evicted BBNaija season 6 housemate, Saskay has given reason why she did not believe Cross genuinely liked her.
Saskay said this on Monday during her interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on African Magic when asked about her connection with male housemates in the house.
According to her, she didn’t know Cross liked her until Peace brought it to her attention.
Saskay noted that she didn’t believe Cross because she felt she was not his type of girl.

Saskay said: “I didn’t believe Cross liked me. It was Peace who noticed it and brought it to my attention.
“I didn’t think Cross liked me because I felt his type of person wouldn’t like someone like me.”
Saskay went ahead to say she stayed close to both JayPaul and Cross sometime in the house because she didn’t want to hurt their feelings.
“I love attention but didn’t want to hurt their feelings, that’s why I didn’t discard both of them at first.
“I didn’t want to play with JayPaul and Cross’s feelings and at the same time make them happy.
“I was trying to balance it but it wasn’t working,” she told Ebuka.
Cross and JayPaul took interest in Saskay while in the house. However, she finally chose JayPaul and shared kisses with him before her eviction.

Nigerian Maverick entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlyboy has dropped his song, Odudubariba after playing the role in the movie, “King of Boys.”
The singer made this known in a statement released to newsmen on Tuesday.
“My people, the eagle has landed. I been tell una say, I no dey finish.
“The long awaited Odudubariba music film video has dropped today.

“Watch out, it’s playing on all your TV channels.”
Recall that Charlyboy in the Netflix-adopted series ‘King of Boys’ directed by Kemi Adetiba played the role of ‘Odudubariba.’
‘Odudubariba’ is one of the elders on the round table who intends to take over the crown from Sola Sobowale and become ‘King of Boys.’
When asked why he accepted the role in King of Boys despite turning down other movie roles, Charlyboy said in an interview that he accepted the role because he’s a fan of Kemi Adetiba and it was an honour to be invited for such a role.
