KILLINGS: Police arrest protesters in Southern Kaduna

<p><b>The Kaduna State Police Command on Saturday arrested some protesters, who took to the streets of the sate today over what they described as “genocide” in the southern part of the state and the government’s inability to arrest the situation.</b></p>
<p>The protesters were said to have paralysed activities at the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, located in the Chikun Local Government Area of the state.</p>
<p>The protesters comprising youths defied security operatives whose presence was said to have been intentional to intimidate them into aborting their demonstrations.</p>
<p>The youths insisted that the federal and state governments must find a lasting solution to the killings in Southern Kaduna.</p>

<p>The protesters clad in dark attires, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Enough is Enough,” “We cannot continue like this,” “Southern Kaduna lives matter,” “Government has failed us,” “Allow us to defend ourselves if you can’t,” “End killings in Southern Kaduna,” among others.</p>
<p>The state PPRO, Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the arrest of some of the protesters, claiming that there was no prior notice of the procession by the protesters.</p>
<p>“Some of them were arrested because they did not inform us about the procession. I cannot tell you how many of them were picked now but I will get back to you later,” Jalige told our correspondent.</p>

<p><b>Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane, has emerged as Juventus’ first choice to replace Maurizio Sarri, who was sacked on Saturday.</b></p>
<p>Sarri has been fired after only one year with the Serie A champions, following their Champions League exit to Lyon on Friday night.</p>
<p>And Juventus chief, Andrea Agnelli, has already targeted former midfielder, Zidane to succeed him.</p>
<p>Former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is believed to be the second choice behind Zidane.</p>
<p>Juve will imminently begin talks with Real president, Florentino Perez over Zidane, after the LaLiga giants were also dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester City.</p>
<p>Agnelli will do anything to bring Zidane back to the club he played for between 1996 and 2001.</p>
<p>And star player, Cristiano Ronaldo would like to work under Zidane again following their success together at Real Madrid.</p>

<p><b>The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State has advised the former governor of Lagos State, now National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to concentrate on what they described as epileptic 2023 presidential ambition rather than wasting time and energy on Edo political situation.</b></p>
<p>The South-South national vice chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih gave this advice in Benin City, while reacting to the recent statement credited to Tinubu when he accused Gov Obaseki of committing impeachable offences.</p>
<p>He said Tinubu should leave Edo State alone and stop accusing Oabseki.</p>
<p>According to Orbih, “Tinubu style of leadership and politics of South West Nigeria is not attractive to Edo people, the only person one can rightly refer to as a dictator is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.</p>

<p>“Is does not make any sense for him to seat down in the comfort of his home drawing up grounds for impeachment for the elected governor of Edo State concerning the unfortunate incident in the State House of Assembly. Reading through his statement, I have come to the conclusion that certainly, he is not aware of the issues.</p>
<p>“It is proper to state here that, we only have ten house members who are legally representing their constituencies, I expect as a former governor of Lagos State, he should know better that once a proclamation is made the law does not allow for another.</p>
<p>‘The other fourteen members stayed away on the instruction of the man who nominated them to be candidates of APC which is Adams Oshiomhole. And we want to advise Tinubu to concentrate his epileptic 2023 ambition,” Orbih added.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor, Comr Philip Shaibu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Inspector General of Police, Department of State Services and other authorities concerned to as a matter of urgency</p>
<p>He said; ” we have intelligence that some individuals are in Edo State courtesy of the former national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, and the names of persons and their mode of entry have been communicated to security agencies.</p>
<p>“Their assignment is to come and assassinate some known individuals in the State. We want president Buhari to tell the security to do their work. Edo is not going to be a theatre of war, we are law abiding,” he said.</p>

<p><b>Juventus have sacked head coach Maurizio Sarri a day after being knocked out of the Champions League in the last-16 stage to Lyon, according to Sky in Italy.</b></p>

<p><b>Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been ruled fit for their Champions League Round of 16-second leg at Bayern Munich on Saturday as the Blues struggle with injuries.</b></p>
<p>Coach Frank Lampard is already without Cesar Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic and Pedro who all picked up injuries during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup final. Willian is also out.</p>
<p>Lampard told reporters that American Pulisic’s injury — a hamstring strain — could rule him out for six weeks while Azpilicueta would be sidelined for three.</p>
<p>But he will have fit again Ruben Loftus-Cheek ready to start.</p>

<p>Chelsea lost 3-0 in London in the first leg and with the string of injuries at the end of their domestic season decimating his squad, Lampard said his players would need to be careful.</p>
<p>“I wouldn’t say all guns blazing or keep it tight,” he said about his tactics. “We want to get our game right as a whole.”</p>
<p>“When you play a team as good as they are, you have to play very well and we didn’t play well enough (in the first leg).”</p>
<p>Bayern are in the hunt for a treble of titles after winning the domestic league and Cup double.</p>
<p>Lampard will be drawing on his own playing experience in Munich, when they came from a goal down in 2012 to win a penalty shootout against Bayern and lift the trophy, to motivate his players.</p>
<p>“If I try to use all the short stories from my career to the players they would get very bored, but I want them to feel and show they can turn this game around. Then they can attempt to do something special,” he said.</p>

<p>Plateau State on Friday stormed to the top of daily Coronavirus infection, toppling Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced 443 new cases.</p>

<p>Total  confirmed Coronavirus cases in Nigeria now stand at 45,687, with 32,637 survivors discharged and 936 deaths recorded.</p>
<p>Six new deaths were recorded on Friday. The 443 new cases were recorded in 19 states in the country.</p>
<p>This is higher than the 354 cases recorded on Thursday.</p>
<p>In Friday’s infections, Plateau recorded 103 new cases besting Lagos, which had 70 cases and the FCT, with 60 cases.</p>
<p>Ondo has 35 cases, Edo and Rivers, 27 cases each, Kaduna, 20 cases, Osun, 19 cases,  Borno and Oyo, 18 cases each and Kwara, 11 cases.</p>
<p>Others are: Adamawa (9), Nasarawa (7), Gombe (6), Bayelsa (4), Imo (4), Bauchi (2), Ogun (2) and Kano (1).</p>

<p>Former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has warned politicians against politics of bitterness and violence and charged them to forge a common agenda that would promote peace and sustainable development in the nation.</p>
<p>The former President further urged them to put the interest of the nation first, adding that politics was not about dividing the people and fighting enemies.</p>

<p>He spoke on Friday during a virtual conference organized by the umbrella body of Ijaw cultural associations known as the Ijaw Nation Development Group(INDG).</p>
<p>Speaking further, the former President said: “To the politicians amongst us, let us shun politics of bitterness and violence and pursue our common interest, regardless of party affiliations. Politics is not about creating and fighting enemies, it is not about dividing the people. Politics is about aspiring for a platform and the ability to utilise it to positively impact our people and develop the nation. Irrespective of party differences, let us forge a common agenda that will promote peace, unity and prosperity among our people.</p>
<p>“As a crusader for functional democracy and good governance in our country and continent, I will like to see our people play key roles in the emergence of who leads them and how they are led.</p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>“Nothing drags a people and a nation back more than social crisis occasioned by the struggle for leadership. We cannot pretend to love our people if we place our personal ambitions over and above everything else and allow it to frustrate the people’s will and our common good.”</p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>Dr. Jonathan also preached unity and love stressing that Nigerians must aspire to build bridges that would sustain a national climate of peace and progress regardless of the challenges.</p>

<p>“As Nigerians, we must realise that our existence, as well as our success depends on our mutual solidarity beginning from the family unit.”</p>

<p>The former President also commended the organisers for seeking to advance an agenda that would promote the development of Ijaw land. He however further urged them to collaborate with other ethnic nationalities for greater harmony towards achieving the desired goal of sustainable development.</p>

<p>According to him the bid should “reflect a determination to unify all Ijaw interest groups in Nigeria and in the diaspora towards achieving the desired goal. This is not to say that we should work in isolation because many of the issues that affect Ijaw land also affect people of other ethnic groups and nationalities.</p>

<p>“I am pleased that you do not intend to operate in isolation but through mutual partnership and collaborations with other ethnic groups in our country. This is the spirit that we must encourage.”</p>
<p>The former President noted that the Ijaw are a great people with a rich and diverse heritage whose history of valour, enterprise and heroism dates back to many centuries.</p>

<p>“Where we are today, the way we are perceived and the state of our development is not a true reflection of the values we espouse as a people but we should not live in despair of opportunities lost or dreams deferred.”</p>

<p>The former President further noted that Ijaw leaders across many generations had contributed immensely to protect the interest of the Ijaw nation and Nigeria when given the opportunity to serve the nation in key positions.</p>

<p>He addd that great men of ijaw land had in the past played key roles in many industries including the media, the maritime industry, the Nigerian Navy and made names in the popular sport of Wrestling, among others.</p>
<p>“We had the likes of Ernest Ikoli, Rear Admiral Nelson Bossman Soroh, Daniel Igali and a host of others who have promoted the Ijaw nation as individuals or while serving in government</p>
<p>“Although I agree that our collective commitment may not have erased the entire worries and issues within our communities, we succeeded in putting off the flames of despair in some quarters and putting on the candle of hope in other areas. The development of any society is like a relay race; the touch or baton is passed on from one group/generations to another. Those who are presently leaders at all levels of government and the private sectors must use their positions to continue the race for our development as a people,” he said.</p>

<p><b>Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has described the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a roguish party which wanted to snatch away Edo State like “a pickpocket eyeing someone’s purse in the market”.</b></p>
<p>The Governor, who stated this on Friday through his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Mohammed while reacting to the impeachment of the speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, described the emergence of the new principal officers as a welcome development.</p>
<p>The Kogi State helmsman while averring that Edo was an APC State which was snatched through the back door by the PDP, assured the Edo APC and her candidate Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of a resounding victory in the September 19 election.</p>
<p>He felicitated with Mr Victor Edoror and Emmanuel Agbaje the new speaker and deputy speaker, respectively of the Edo State House of Assembly following their election by a majority of members in the Edo State capital, Benin City.</p>
<p>Governor Bello who said Kogi State is very interested in peace within her neighbour Edo, noted that since both states share a long boundary line, any breakdown of law and order in the latter was bound to cause security and other troubles for the former.</p>
<p>He urged the new speaker and members of the Edo State House of Assembly to swing into action immediately to restore order to the state legislature and find ways to work with other arms of their government in the best interests of Edo people.</p>
<p>It will be recalled that 17 members of the 24-man Edo Assembly elected new leadership on Thursday with a pledge to restore order to the state legislature which had been embroiled in longstanding crises.</p>
<p>Before then, seven members belonging to the PDP and allegedly backed by Governor Godwin Obaseki, the embattled Governor of the state, had taken over the duties of the Assembly and purportedly impeached the former deputy speaker for declaring support for the APC.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Emphasisng on NAFDAC registration number, Abubakar told citizens to look out for labelling requirements.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“Examine the content of the product, the seal of authority or the approved registration number from NAFDAC,” he said.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The spokesman explained that NAFDAC puts every product through laboratory analysis and certain compendium references before certification.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">“We to look at the whole process of good manufacturing practice, the location and all factors put together to certify a product,” he added.</div>

<p><b>The Peoples Democratic Party has accused the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress Adams Oshiomhole of allegedly deploying security agents to take over the Edo State House of Assembly.</b></p>
<p>The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this on Thursday while he charged the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to stop the attempt to take over the Assembly.</p>
<p>Ologbondiyan, in a statement, titled, ‘.Stop invasion of Edo Assembly now’ said, “The party posits that the invasion and illegal occupation of the state legislature by security agents allegedly deployed by sacked national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, is a direct coup against the democratic order of Edo State and a recipe for anarchy, chaos, and bloodletting.</p>
<p>“We urge the Inspector-General to act with dispatch to curb this nefarious situation, which has heightened tension in the state, and if not halted, may result in a bloody clash as the citizens are already charged to defend their symbol of democracy from a forceful takeover.</p>
<p>“The police hierarchy is urged to note that this provocative and lawless act by the APC is part of its plans to overheat the polity and create a security situation with the view to unleash violence on the people, derail the democratic order in the state and blame it on security agencies.“</p>
<p>Ologbondiyan also condemned what he referred to as “this notorious resort to self-help by the APC and their agents to forcefully take over power in Edo State through the back door.”</p>
<p>The party restated its call to President Muhammadu Buhari to rein in Adams Oshiomhole before he triggered a serious crisis in the state.</p>
<p>Also, the Edo State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Chris Nehikhare, in a statement titled, ‘Failed Assembly Takeover,’ said the plot to take over the Assembly was thwarted by the Edo people.</p>

<p><b>President Muhammadu Buhari has directed state governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enforce the use of face masks in public places across the country.</b></p>
<p>The Chairman, Presidential Task force on COVID-19, Mr Boss Mustapha, made this known at the daily briefing on Thursday in Abuja.</p>
<p>Mustapha, while reviewing the activities of the committee, said the president also approved that the current phase of the National Response to COVID-19 should be maintained for another four weeks, but with some modifications.</p>
<p>“President Buhari also asked the PTF to partner with states and local governments to improve community sensitisation and engagement to step up response to the COVID-19 response.</p>
<p>“He also encouraged state governments to collaborate with local government authorities to intensify necessary measures such as contact tracing, grassroots mobilisation and risk communication.</p>
<p>“He also ordered that collaboration with other mandate groups at federal/state levels to harmonise the country’s COVID-19 response be strenghtened on the short, medium and long-term basis,” he said.</p>
<p>Mustapha warned against stigmatisation and skepticism among Nigerians in the fight against COVID-19.</p>
<p>“I wish to remind all Nigerians that this fight is for every one; everyone must take responsibility.</p>
<p>“Disbelief and skepticism will further complicate our situation; we should not stigmatise anyone infected. Our communities should own the response and educate our citizens,” he said.</p>

<p><b>The All Progressives Congress has said the governor of Edo State,  Governor Obaseki, was responsible for numerous siege to the Edo Assembly complex.</b></p>
<p>It also rubbished claims that its leadership “ferried police from Abuja” to block the Assembly complex.</p>
<p>In a statement by the Chairman of the state Media Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki, the party accused the state government of carrying out several onslaughts against the constitutional independence of the legislative arm of government by attacking its members-elect and denying them representation.</p>
<p>“It is a known fact that Governor Obaseki has treated the House of Assembly, an independent and co-equal branch of government, as a mere extension of his office through the brutalisation of members-elect and the denial of representation to the majority of members.</p>
<p>“In a Gestapo style, the outgoing governor hijacked a tiny minority and purportedly inaugurated them in the dead of the night. The sham inauguration was condemned and set aside by both arms of the National Assembly after their separate investigations revealed that the members, and indeed the Clerk, were forced to participate in the illegality under threat to life.</p>
<p>“With these criminal antecedents, we believe if there is any unwholesome activity ongoing at the Assembly complex, it is Mr Godwin Obaseki who is in the best position to explain to the world what is going on and why. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, or the APC, does not control the Police,” he said.</p>

<p><b>Three out of seven #RevolutionNow Movement protesters arrested on Wednesday in Osogbo were late Thursday released to their parents.</b></p>
<p>Their counsel, Alfred Adegoke, told our correspondent that four of the protesters were still being detained at the office of the Department of State Security in Osogbo.</p>
<p>Adegoke gave the names of those released as Samuel Olowolafe, Gift Erupke, and Martins Jesuloni.</p>
<p>According to him, the four that are still held were unable to bring their parents as demanded by the DSS.</p>
<p>He said, “They are still being held. The condition that they should produce their parents is uncalled for.</p>
<p>“They are adults. For instance, Olawale Bakare lost his mum long ago. Also, parents of one of those being held live abroad.”</p>

<p>The Debt Management Office (DMO) put the total value of loans taken by Nigeria from China as at March 31, 2020, at $3.121 billion.It was the first time the Chinese Embassy would make its position known on the controversy surrounding the loans.</p>
<p>The loans represent only about 3.94 per cent of Nigeria’s total public debt of $79.303.</p>
<p>In terms of external sources of funds, loans from China accounted for 11.28 per cent of the external debt stock of $27.67 as at the same date.</p>
<p>Saixiong said on telephone: “There is nothing like that (China taking over property). The inclusion of Sovereignty clause is a common practice in many international commercial agreements.</p>
<p>“We see the issue as more of Nigeria’s internal affairs. China follows the approach of no interference in African countries’ pursuit of development paths that fit their national conditions; no interference in African countries’ internal affairs.</p>
<p>“The terms of the loans have been explained, we don’t need to say anything on the clause.</p>
<p>“Our position has always been consistent that China is committed to enhancing investment and financial cooperation with African countries based on their needs to help them improve infrastructure and extradite socioeconomic development.</p>
<p>“China always gives full consideration to debt sustainability and seeks mutually-acceptable proposals through equal and friendly consultations.</p>
<p>“Such a debate on loans is not the first time it will come up in Nigeria and other African countries. China will never seek hegemony and we are not out to take over any country.”</p>
<p>He released the official position of the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry on China-Africa cooperation.</p>
<p>The statement said: “China is committed to enhancing investment and financial cooperation with African countries based on their needs to help them improve infrastructure and extradite socioeconomic development.</p>
<p>“By funding infrastructure and other areas that lag behind for short of money, we have helped the relevant countries break bottlenecks, enhance their capacity for independent development, realize social and economic sustainable development, and improve people’s livelihood.</p>
<p>“Such cooperation has delivered tangible benefits to African countries and peoples. In the process, China always gives full consideration to debt sustainability and seeks mutually-acceptable proposals through equal and friendly consultations.</p>
<p>“That is the fundamental reason behind the enormous popularity of China-Africa cooperation in Africa. And such cooperation is widely welcomed by African countries.”</p>
<p>The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, made China’s position towards its cooperation with Africa quite clear in his remarks on the FOCAC (Forum on China-Africa Cooperation) Beijing Summit 2018 when he said: “We respect Africa, love Africa and support Africa.</p>
<p>“We follow a ‘five-no’ approach in our relations with Africa: no interference in African countries’ pursuit of development paths that fit their national conditions; no interference in African countries’ internal affairs; no imposition of our will on African countries; no attachment of political strings to assistance to Africa; and no seeking of selfish political gains in investment and financing cooperation with Africa.”</p>

<p><b>Members of the #RevolutionNow who took to the streets in agitation over some national issues only jumped the gun, the Presidency said on Thursday.</b></p>
<p>It said the Muhammadu Buhari administration was already addressing the issues the protesters were expressing misgivings about.</p>
<p>Members of the group staged protests in Lagos, Abuja, the Osun State capital of Osogbo and Ore in Ondo State, among others, on Wednesday.</p>

<p>They demanded more efforts in tackling corruption cases, insecurity, poor services, unemployment, poverty, among others, to strengthen the nation’s social and economic well-being.</p>
<p>The Presidency said the Buhari administration was finding solutions to the issues, adding that many Nigerians knew the government had not relaxed in tacking the challenges but was working hard to make the nation surmount them.</p>
<p>The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this while speaking on Channels Television morning programme, Sunrise Daily, which he joined via Zoom.</p>
<p>Adesina said it would be wrong to describe the protest as a revolution but more aptly an irritation.</p>
<p>He said: “The question I will also ask is: which country in the world does not have those issues? Almost none; particularly at this time and season that the world is passing through. Which country doesn’t have those issues? Those issues are peculiar to every country of the world.</p>
<p>“Now, if government is trying and bending over backwards, doing its best to sort out these issues and then you go out with these irritancy and distractions, are you contributing to progress or you are trying to pull progress back?</p>
<p>“All these things are being tackled by government. In fact, that is why government exists: to make sure that the quality of life of the people is better. This is one government that has been working assiduously to ensure that life is better for the people</p>
<p>“The larger numbers of Nigerians know and they understand. But the pockets of people that go on this irritating protest, good luck to them. That’s what I will say so that somebody will not say I’m talking down on Nigerians again.</p>
<p>Adesina described the protests by the #RevolutionNow members as an irritant, which would drag Nigeria away from progress, rather than solve its problems.</p>
<p>“Was it really a protest? By my estimation, those seemed like child’s play because protests, by their very nature, are spontaneous things. They are mass things. But this was just a sprinkle of people trying to be funny</p>
<p>“As far as I’m concerned, it’s nothing to be worried about because when you talk of a revolution, it is always a mass thing, not those sprinkles of those young boys and girls you saw yesterday (Wednesday) in different parts of the country. I think it was just a funny thing to call it a revolution protest,” he said.</p>

<div>The virus causes a disease called “Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS).</div>

<div>According to reports, it has already killed seven people and infected at least 60, setting off alarm bells among health officials in the country.<span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span></div>

<div>Many of the cases reported were concentrated in East China’s Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, local media reported.</div>

<div>A tick specie that bears the virus</div>

<div>While more than 37 people were diagnosed with SFTS in Jiangsu in the early months of 2020, 23 were later found to be infected in Anhui.</div>

<div>While the disease is transferred to humans through tick bites, Chinese virologists have warned that human-to-human transmission of the virus cannot be ruled out.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Unlike SARS-CoV-2 however, this is not the first time the SFTS virus has infected people.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The recent spate of cases merely marks a re-emergence of the disease, IndianExpresss.com reports.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) belongs to the Bunyavirus family and is transmitted to humans through tick bites. The virus was first identified by a team of researchers in China over a decade ago. The first few cases were reported in rural areas of Hubei and Henan provinces in 2009.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The team of researchers identified the virus by examining blood samples obtained from a cluster of people exhibiting similar symptoms. According to a report by Nature, the virus killed at least 30 per cent of those infected.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The current case fatality rate rests between approximately 16 and 30 per cent, according to the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Due to the rate at which it spreads and its high fatality rate, SFTS has been listed among the top 10 priority diseases blue print by the World Health Organisation (WHO).</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Virologists believe an Asian tick called Haemaphysalis longicornis is the primary vector, or carrier, of the virus. The disease is known to spread between March and November.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Researchers have found that the total number of infections generally peaks between April and July.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Farmers, hunters and pet owners are particularly vulnerable to the disease as they regularly come in contact with animals that may carry the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Scientists have found that the virus is often transmitted to humans from animals like goats, cattle, deer and sheep.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Despite being infected by the virus, animals generally do not show any symptoms associated with SFTSV.</div>

<div><b><u>What are the symptoms of the SFTFS virus?</u></b></div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>According to a study conducted by a team of Chinese researchers in 2011, the incubation period is anywhere between seven and 13 days after the onset of the illness.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Patients suffering from the disease usually experience a whole range of symptoms, including, fever, fatigue, chill, headache, lymphadenopathy, anorexia, nausea, myalgia, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gingival hemorrhage, conjunctival congestion, and so on.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Some of the early warning signs of the disease include severe fever, thrombocytopenia or low platelet count and leukocytopenia, which is low white blood cell count.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The risk factors observed in more serious cases include multi-organ failure, hemorrhagic manifestation and the appearance of central nervous system (CNS) symptoms.</div>

<div>A combined team of police and other security operatives were said to have later  cleared the road and restored normalcy on the highway.</div>

<div>Eyewitnesses said the youths had earlier in the morning blocked the highway with trees, stones and worn out  tyres.</div>

<div>The youths were also said  to be chanting songs depicting their displeasure over the insecurity in the communities.</div>

<div>It was learnt that the development prevented many commuters from making use of the highway in the morning.</div>

<div>One of the youths who pleaded anonymity said, “We are tired of activities of the bandits in our communities. We blocked the highway to show our displeasure over insecurity here. We want the authorities to be aware of our plight and come to our rescue.”</div>

<div>Eyewitnesses said security operatives including the police later came to clear the highway and restored normalcy.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>It could not be ascertained whether any arrest was made as of the time of filing this report.</div>

<div>The Spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah, could not be reached for comment as he was said to be at a meeting.</div>

<div>The Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, announced the offer in a statement on Wednesday.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The move is targeting foreign government agents seeking to compromise the country’s federal, state or local election elections through cyber attacks.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Allegations of foreign interference, especially by Russia, in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections had been a big political issue in the country.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>In 2019, then Special Counsel, Mr Robert Mueller, launched a lengthy investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the elections in favour of President Donald Trump.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Trump strongly denied colluding with the Russians, and dismissed the Muller probe as the product of a fake dossier paid for by the Democratic Party.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>In his 448-page report, Mueller said it did not establish that the Trump campaign criminally conspired with Russia to influence the election.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>However, the report cited 10 instances where Trump allegedly attempted to impede the investigation, a claim the president also denied.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>In July, the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Nov. 3 election, Mr Joe Biden, said he received a security briefing on plans by the Russians to interfere again.</div>

<div>Biden vowed a swift retaliation against any nation that attempts to meddle in the American democratic process.</div>

<div>Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Nigeria, Demianus Ojijeogu, in a statement Thursday explained that the rumour was the handiwork of mischief makers to confuse candidates and the general public of the body’s readiness in terms of security to conduct 2020 West African Senior School Certificate, Examination, WASSCE scheduled to start on August 17.</div>

<div>He said: “The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been drawn to rumours being peddled by some online media that there was a fire outbreak at WAEC Headquarters, Abuja.</div>

<div>“We hereby categorically state that there was no fire incident at WAEC Headquarters or any WAEC office in Nigeria, for that matter.</div>

<div><b>Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYWMA)has declared that Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State was no more the dirtiest in Africa as the metropolis has achieved 60% compliance with waste management law compliance.</b></div>

<div>The Executive Chairman, OYWMA, Prince Morounfolu Adelore who disclosed this on Tuesday said the present administration in the State set out to change the narrative of Ibadan being ‘the dirtiest in Africa’ and through advocacy and enforcement, has achieved some of its aims.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Morounfolu, who spoke with journalists at his office in Ibadan said the immediate past administration was initially praised by the people for ensuring a clean Ibadan in its first term but derailed during the second term as, according to him, the work of the agency was given to a consultant.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“I will today tell you that Ibadan has achieved 60% adherence to regulations guiding waste disposal and management, go to areas where things used to be so bad, we have changed the attitude of the people, it is progressing, people are complying daily, the system arrest offenders fined them, this is subtle enforcement.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“There was a time in the history of Oyo State that a former governor was given kudos for maintaining cleanliness in his first term and everything was derailed during the second term because the responsibility of this waste management agency was ceded to a consultant, the General Manager and Directors were transferred back to their various ministries.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“The consultant took up the functions of the Waste authority that all the assets that successive governments left for optimum working success became moribund, utility vehicles, bulldozers, payloaders were all abandoned and the four dump sites that were acquired in 1998 were in a sorry state, not properly maintained because the contractor did not know the job, they just came to make money.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“Today, the General Manager and all directors are back to work and we have taken over all the responsibilities of the waste authority and to bridge the gap, the government has brought in a task force to make sure we get waste management system right.”</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“We don’t want to be too harsh as we are in a democratic government and at the same time, we need to encourage what is right, Oyo State people are very simple and dynamic, it is a pacesetter State, advocacy work will not stop, every nook and cranny will get the message and key into the clean and green architecture of OYOWMA.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“We are taking inventories of all our zonal offices, we just resumed serious works not long ago, those zonal offices of OYOWMA became moribund long ago, there were assets of the waste authority in those five zonal offices in Oke-Ogun 1 (Saki), Oke-Ogun 2 (Iseyin), Eruwa, Ogbomoso and Oyo, we are revamping them.”</div>

<div>Adelore said the idea of putting refuse on the road median was initiated by the immediate past administration and has become a thing of the past as and letters have been sent to all Private Refuse Contractors (PSPs) to work alongside the management to stop totally, the habit of dumping waste on the road median.</div>

<div>“What we met on ground was the habit of putting refuse on the road median, that is the policy of the immediate past administration and they said they had a reason for that, but we are stopping it, we have rolled out letters to all our PSPs to make sure that all their areas of coverage meet total compliance with the directive against dumping refuse on the median,” he noted.</div>

<div>He, however, added that the State government has awarded the contract for the reactivation of Ajakanga and Awotan dumpsites in Ibadan to stop illegal dumpsites being used by some private waste collectors and manufacturing companies.</div>

<div>Its General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, disclosed this in a statement in Lagos by Mrs Nkechi Ajayi, the Public Affairs Officer of LASWA on Tuesday.</div>

<div>There have been reports of accidents on waterways in Lagos in recent times, the latest being July 29, which claimed more than 10 lives.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Emmanuel expressed LASWA’s commitment to continually ensure the safety of ferry passengers in the state.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>According to him, the arrest of erring boat operators is part of the authority’s efforts in the ongoing enforcement and monitoring exercise across the inland waterways.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“The patrol team of Lagos State Waterways Authority earlier seized a total number of six boat engines belonging to commercial ferry operators that were caught flouting safety regulations on the waterways.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“Their offences include: not wearing life jackets, overloading, reckless driving, among other offences which could have resulted in preventable fatalities when accidents occur,” the LASWA boss said.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>He said areas covered during the safety compliance operations were Mile 2, Kirirkiri, Abule Osun Jetty, Alex Jetty, Liverpool, Ebute-Ojo all in the Ojo axis of Lagos.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>Emmanuel said the authority would no longer condone any action that would be against the safety standards of the state inland waterways.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>“Any erring operator will be sanctioned appropriately,” the general manager added.</div>

<b>United States President, Donald Trump, said Monday that he had fired the chair of the Tennessee Valley Authority, criticizing the federal-owned corporation for hiring foreign workers.</b><br />
<br />
Trump told reporters at the White House that he was formally removing chair Skip Thompson and another member of the board, and he threatened to remove other board members if they continued to hire foreign labour.<br />
<br />
The TVA is a federally owned corporation created in 1933 to provide flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing and economic development to the Tennessee Valley, a region that was hard hit by the Great Depression. The region covers most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky as well as small sections of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.<br />
<br />
He also said the TVA board must immediately hire a new chief executive officer who “puts the interests of Americans first.” According to Trump, the CEO, Jeff Lyash, earns $8 million a year.<br />

“The new CEO must be paid no more than $500,000 a year,” Trump said. “We want the TVA to take action on this immediately. … Let this serve as a warning to any federally appointed board: If you betray American workers, you will hear two words: ‘You’re fired.’”<br />

Trump said the authority was replacing many of its in-house technology workers with contractors who rely heavily on foreign workers under the H1-B visa program for highly skilled workers.<br />
<br />
As Trump was meeting with workers who would shortly be laid off by the authority, Trump was passed a note from chief of staff Mark Meadows that said Lyash had called the White House and was promising to address the labour concerns.<br />
<br />
Some of the attendees, who are set to see their last paycheck at the end of the month, teared up as Trump read the message.<br />
<br />
Trump acknowledged that he was made aware of the issue after seeing a television ad produced by US Tech Workers, a nonprofit that wants to limit visas given to foreign technology workers, that aired in primetime on Fox News.<br />
<br />
The group, led by Kevin Lynn, criticized the TVA for furloughing its own workers and replacing them with contractors using foreign workers with H-1B visas. The ad, Lynn said, had an “audience of one,” aiming to persuade Trump to stop the TVA from outsourcing much of its information technology division.<br />
<br />
Trump made the announcement as he signed an executive order to require all federal agencies to complete an internal audit to prove they are not replacing qualified American workers with people from other countries. The White House said the order will help prevent federal agencies from unfairly replacing American workers with lower-cost foreign labour.<br />
<br />
The order followed the TVA’s announcement that it would outsource 20% of its technology jobs to companies based in foreign countries. TVA’s action could cause more than 200 highly skilled American tech workers in Tennessee to lose their jobs to foreign workers hired on temporary work visas, according to the White House.<br />
<br />
But Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said the TVA doesn’t get any taxpayer money. Commenting on the issue in April, Alexander said the White House was spreading misinformation. He said that TVA chief executive officers’ pay is lower than other large utilities and that TVA energy rates are among the lowest in the nation.

<b>The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, on Monday, signed into law the revised 2020 Appropriation Bill.</b><br />

The 2020 Budget was revised from N530,813,357,619.00 to N300,370,071,183.33 bn.<br />
<br />
This was contained in a statement by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim.<br />
<br />
Wike, while performing the ceremony in his office at Government House, Port Harcourt, after receiving it from the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Martin Amaewhule, said his government would work within the budget, to ensure that the people get its benefits.<br />

He said: “It is most unfortunate that everybody is living a different life now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which calls for us to face the economic reality.<br />
<br />
“The COVID-19 has affected economic activities and revenues of the government, and so it became necessary to review our budget.<br />
<br />
“By the revised budget, it means that so many things have to change. We have cut down the capital and recurrent expenditure to face reality.<br />
<br />
“We are the only State that has not cut down the salaries of political appointees and elected officers.<br />
<br />
“Virtually all the States have cut down 20 to percent of salaries of political appointees.<br />
<br />
“Having cut down the recurrent expenditures, the overhead will no longer be the same.”

<div style="text-align: left;">It was reliably gathered that the deputy governor had almost concluded arrangements for his defection with the leadership of the Zenith Labour Party.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said, “He (Ajayi) will go to his ward to resign from the PDP and he will join the ZLP immediately. Everything will be done this week. The plan has been completed.”</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">The source added that the leadership of the ZLP was already fine-tuning the name replacement with the Independent National Electoral Commission so that Ajayi’s name would be registered as its candidate in the October 10 governorship election.</div>
