Hotel worker stabs guest to death over N1,200

An attendant at a makeshift inn in Whitesand, Ijora-Badia area of Lagos State, Emmanuel Ben, has been taken to police custody for suspected murder of a customer identified only as White London.<br />
<br />
Ben reportedly stabbed the 25-year-old man with a knife during an argument over N1,200.<br />
<br />
White London had gone to the inn around 11am on February 8 with his lover to have fun and was charged N1,200 for a room.<br />
<br />
He reportedly agreed and promised to settle the bill when he returned from the room with the lover.<br />

Barely an hour after, White London emerged from the room but refused to pay for the service as agreed, leading to a quarrel between him and the attendant.<br />
<br />
They allegedly slugged it out with each other during which 21-year-old Emmanuel knifed him in the stomach.<br />
<br />
A resident of the area, who identified himself simply as George, said the occurrence caused a commotion in the neighbourhood and a distress call was put across to the police from the Ijora Division.<br />
<br />
He said White London bled to death at the spot before policemen from the Ijora Division arrived at the scene.<br />
<br />
“Many people were woken up by the uproar from the scene. I didn’t come out because it was too late and I would not want to be caught up in the fracas. I peeped outside from my window and I could hear, ‘oti ku’ (He is dead). Some minutes later, some policemen arrived in their van.<br />
<br />
“It was the following morning I knew what led to the fight. I learnt the man (White London) came to the inn with his girlfriend and when they were done, he refused to pay for the service. The attendant charged him N1,200 but he was not willing to pay. He (Ben) stabbed him while they were fighting.”<br />
<br />
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said White London was bargaining with Ben over the bill when the fight ensued.<br />
<br />
“It was not as if the man did not want to pay for the service but he wanted to have a cut from the N1,200 the attendant demanded. The attendant declined and that was when the argument started.<br />
<br />
“Immediately the incident happened, the attendant wanted to flee but he was held by some vigilance men who handed him over to the police. The deceased was not a resident there but many people knew him as White London,” the resident recalled, adding that the hotel had been shut.<br />
<br />
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, stated that the corpse had been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.<br />
<br />
He said, “An attendant at a hotel in a shanty in White Sand, Ijora-Badia, stabbed a guest popularly known as White London to death with a knife. The misunderstanding was caused by non-payment of N1, 200 lodging fee by the deceased whose real name is still unknown.<br />
<br />
“The police have arrested the suspect and the knife reportedly used for the crime was recovered at the scene. Investigation is ongoing.”

The Oyo State Government on Friday said two suspected cases of coronavirus in the state as speculated in some media reports have tested negative.<br />
<br />
The two cases according to the government did not even test positive to any of either coronavirus or Lassa fever but that the suspects who were earlier quarantined are improving heathwise.<br />
<br />
This is as the government disclosed that the state is on high alert following the confirmed case in neighbouring Lagos state.<br />
<br />
The government spoke through the state commissioner of health, Dr Bashir Bello while responding to questions from journalist during a press conference to update the media on the efforts of the government at ensuring that the virus did not enter into the state.<br />

<br />
Saying the press conference became imperative in view of the proximity of Lagos to Ibadan, Bello said the state had deployed adequate resources to its facilities in case of unforeseen circumstances.<br />
<br />
Stressing that no case of the corona or Lassa fever virus had been reported in the state, the commissioner said the state has enlisted the support and collaboration of the Nigerian Army through the 2 Division, Ojoo where a quarantine facility had been set up in the case of any reported case or outbreak.<br />
<br />
Noting that all state health facilities had been put on high alert, he enjoined private based health facilities to also have a high index of suspicion for all cases of unexplainable fever and upper respiratory infections.<br />
<br />
Speaking further, Bello implored residents of the state to prioritise hygienic practices of regular hand washing with soap and water and ensuring that anyone with fever is promptly taken for medical attention.<br />
<br />
He also urged residents to reduce frequency of face touching, regularly disinfect surfaces and keep social distance with anyone sneezing or coughing.<br />
<br />
“As for the suspected case, the person is now improving. We know that a case will have to be taken into study and it was discovered that it is nothing related to either Coronavirus or Lassa virus.<br />
<br />
“What we saw at Oyo was nothing near Lassa or Coronavirus. We are ready as we don’t know who would have travelled in and out of Ibadan.<br />
<br />
“For the least symptoms of respiratory distress, we give them that maximum attention and we treat it like a case. A single case is considered an epidemic. That is why with the single case in Lagos, all other neighbouring states are on high alert.<br />
<br />
“What we are trying to do is that going by our proximity to Lagos and the high level of transaction between these two urban centres, we are being very prepared because no one can tell.<br />
<br />
“There is freedom of movement enshrined in the constitution and we cannot, for this reason, restrict movement of individuals. I wish to reassure the people of the state that there is currently no outbreak of Coronavirus in the state,” Bello said.<br />
<br />
In his own remarks, the Chairman, UCH Committee on Response to Emergency and Outbreak of Disease, Professor Kayode Osungbade noted that from the caliber of people at the press conference, the state is prepared to tackle the virus as all stakeholders have continued to come together and especially because a case has been confirmed in Nigeria which necessitated the press conference.<br />

He added that with the presence of all the stakeholders at the conference, including the military, the state government, the UCH, private facilities, Officials of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) among other is indicative of the readiness and commitment of the relevant stakeholders to tackle the challenge any outbreak.

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday night has finally approved the retirement of Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation from the Federal Civil Service with effect from Thursday, 27th February, 2020.<br />
<br />
Consequently, the President has also confirmed the appointed Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, who was the acting HoS, as the substantive Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF).<br />
<br />
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha made the announcement in a statement signed on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Mr. Olusegun Adekunle. This is coming five months after the embattled Oyo-Ita was suspended from office over corruption allegations.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Oyo-Ita was removed from office on September 18, 2019 following the submission of a report on her alleged involvement in some contract awards in her office.<br />

According to the statement, in approving the retirement, President Buhari also said that it would be without prejudice to the on-going investigations into certain allegations against the immediate past HoS. The President thanked her for the invaluable services to the nation and wished her well in all future endeavors.<br />

“President Muhammadu Buhari in exercise of the powers vested in him by Section 171 (2) (b); and in compliance with Sub-Sections (3) and (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) has approved the appointment of Dr. (Mrs.) Folasade. O. Yemi-Esan as the substantive Head of the Civil Service of the Federation with effect from Friday, 28th February, 2020.<br />
<br />
“Until her new appointment, she was the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, a position she assumed since 18th September, 2019. “Dr. (Mrs.) Yemi-Esan, a Dental Surgeon, was appointed a Federal Permanent Secretary in 2012 and has at various times, served in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Federal Ministries of Information, Education and Petroleum Resources,” the statement reads.<br />
<br />
The President charged the new Head of Service to bring her wealth of experience to bear in the new position so that government could deliver on the priority areas of development already outlined. He also urged the new HoS to make the stabilization of the Federal Civil Service top most on her agenda.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Friday disclosed that his foray into partisan politics came with a vow never to deceive those who elected him.<br />
<br />
According to the Senate President, his decision to be transparent in his dealings as a lawmaker stems from his determination to deliver effective representation to his people, and by extension in service to the nation.<br />
<br />
Lawan stated this during the conferment of a traditional title of Mukaddam of Nguru in Yobe by the Nguru Emirate Council, according to a statement by his Special Assistant (Press), Ezrel Tabiowo, in Abuja.<br />
<br />
“The people of Zone C gave me the opportunity to serve them, and I’ll remain eternally grateful for that opportunity.<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a><br />
<br />
“I made a promise when I entered into politics or partisan politics in 1998, when I served as Vice Chairman of the All People’s Party (APP) in Yobe.<br />
<br />
“But in 1999 when I was elected as a member of the House of Representatives, I promised that I will not deceive the people who elected me.<br />
<br />
“I will always tell them the truth, even if it is bitter, and I will do my best at all times to represent them very well.<br />
<br />
“I’m still on that, and thank God from my federal constituency, to the larger Yobe North zone C, I have understood my people and my people understand me,” the Senate President said.<br />
<br />
After the conferment of the traditional title of Mukaddam of Nguru on him by the Emir of Nguru, Lawan disclosed that plans were underway to establish a skill acquisition Centre in Yobe North senatorial district.<br />
<br />
He said the move to so do was in line with providing employment to the youths so as to address the surrounding problems of unemployment and insecurity in the state.<br />
<br />
“Your Royal Highness, this title will make me work harder during my tenure and after my tenure, because I have to leave at some point.<br />
<br />
“But while I serve as Senator representing this senatorial district, I will do everything possible to ensure that the people of Zone C, Yobe North, get their fair share of Federal presence and also opportunities in terms of employment.<br />
<br />
“Only two or three days ago, I had discussion with a government parastatal that we are going to establish a Skill Acquisition Centre in Nguru.<br />
<br />
“What we want to do with that acquisition Centre is to look for our youths, especially those who have nothing to do, train them in tiling, interlocking and so many other things that we have to borrow people from somewhere else.<br />
<br />
“When they are trained, we will give them something to work with, that way, the employment and even our security situation will be addressed,” Lawan said.

The spokesman for the Iranian legislative body on Friday said the Iranian Parliament is suspending its work amid the spread of coronavirus in the country.<br />

According to the spokesman, Asadullah Abbasi, Parliament will not be holding any sessions until further notice.<br />

Iran has 388 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection and 34 virus-associated deaths so far.<br />
<br />
The Islamic Republic’s deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi, who was leading the task force to tackle the epidemic tested positive for the virus.<br />

Several other officials, including lawmakers Mojtaba Zonnour and Mahmoud Sadeghi and the Iranian Vice President for Women’s and Family Affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar, confirmed that they had contracted the illness.<br />

The coronavirus disease originated in China but has since spread to dozens of nations around the world.<br />
<br />
So far, over 83, 300 people have contracted the disease and more 2, 850 have died from it.<br />
<br />
Italy, Iran and South Korea are currently experiencing the worst outbreaks in their respective regions.<br />
<br />
However, the most recent figures indicate that over a third of the people who have contracted the disease have since recovered.<br />
<br />
Iran remains one of the countries beyond China suffering the most from the coronavirus outbreak.

Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom has charged the state Livestock Guards to impound any livestock seen grazing openly.<br />

The governor who gave the charge on Friday in Makurdi while inspecting impounded cows at the quarantine unit of the state Ministry of Agriculture, said enforcement of the ranching law would continue to enable those who wish to do livestock business comply with its provisions.<br />
<br />
He stated that there had been influx of armed herdsmen with large herds of animals into the state, despite the high level of awareness creation to the existence of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.<br />
<br />
The governor stated that several herds of cattle had been impounded and quarantined in other local government areas in the state, pointing out that trucks have been acquired by government to help Livestock Guards convey impounded livestocks from long distances to quarantine units for safe keeping.<br />

He described the influx of the armed herdsmen as life-threatening, saying such would not be condoned by his administration.<br />
<br />
Ortom said over four hundred herders have been arrested and are being prosecuted at various stages, pointing out that the herders destroy farm produce and even make harvested crops feeds for the cattle.<br />
<br />
He insisted that there was no intention to repeal the ranching law, stressing that ranching remains the global best practice of animals husbandry and urged all Nigerians to key into it with a view to ensuring peace between herdsmen and farmers.<br />
<br />
State Commander Livestock Guards, Mr. Linus Zaki said his men had arrested three herdsmen during the recent operations.<br />
<br />
Zaki added that 214 cattle were impounded in Ukum LGA, 69 in Logo, 219 in Guma, 96 in Makurdi and 16 in Gwer West LGA.

It was alleged that the victim who is a JSS one student at the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Katsina, made the allegation against the corps member, leading to his arrest.<br />
It was learnt that the girl alleged that the corps member committed the act when she visited him at the residence the school provided for serving corps members.<br />
<br />
Already, the school management and the NYSC authorities have met to discuss the issue before the arrest of the corps member by the Police.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the state branch of the National Youth Service Scheme, NYSC, have reacted to reports of an alleged rape case involving a serving corps member deployed to the state, insisting it is awaiting the outcome of Police investigation on the matter before taking necessary action<br />
<br />
The NYSC Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Alex Obemeata, in a press release made available to newsmen in Katsina, said NYSC is a highly reputable organization where discipline is the hallmark and will therefore not condone acts of indiscipline by any member of the corps.<br />
<br />
He said “the issue is still under police investigation and we await the conclusion from the force, before taking any action.<br />
<br />
“Further necessary briefs and actions will be communicated to the press when investigation is concluded by the Police.”

Sequel to the detection of the disease in Nigeria on Thursday, the governments of Lagos and Ogun states have begun the search for those persons who may have had contact with the patient.<br />

It was also learnt that they might also be placed under surveillance for two weeks once identified by the government.<br />

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said during a press conference on Friday that the Italian, whose identity has yet to be revealed, tested positive for the virus in Lagos after he travelled to Ewekoro, Ogun State, for a business appointment at Lafarge Africa Plc.<br />
<br />
Abayomi stated that the Italian flew a Turkish Airlines flight into the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, from Milan, Italy, having transited through Istanbul, Turkey.<br />
<br />
There were 121 passengers on the Turkish Airline flight.<br />
<br />
The commissioner, however, noted that the patient did not exhibit any symptom as of the time he arrived in the country.<br />
<br />
He explained that the patient spent the night in a hotel around the airport area in Lagos before he left for a consultancy appointment in Ogun State, where he was also lodged in an accommodation provided by Lafarge.<br />
<br />
The commissioner revealed that the patient fell ill on Wednesday while still in Ogun State and that he was transferred to Lagos on Thursday where he was diagnosed with the virus, after which he was quarantined.<br />
<br />
Also speaking during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Friday, Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, noted that before arriving in Ogun State on Tuesday morning, the patient had made contact with three people in Lagos State in the night.<br />
<br />
She added, “He stayed at a guest house and at about 4pm on Wednesday February 26, he developed fever. The hospital of Lafarge was very sensitive to the case, they responded immediately and contacted Lagos that they had a high suspicion.”<br />
<br />
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, who was a guest on Television Continental on Friday, said, “This young man came in from Milan. He came in on the 26th. He has a consultancy job with a company in Ogun state.<br />
<br />
“He went to Ewekoro and then he fell ill and the doctors were smart enough to say this is somebody that is coming from Italy that has just suddenly fell ill. So they took him in. So we sent an ambulance there with a pep jacket. So they brought him in and then he was diagnosed.<br />
<br />
“Within four hours, he was diagnosed. Our diagnostic tool seemed to work better than we expected. Normally it takes about eight hours but within four hours, we were able to determine it. So he is in our bio-security lab in Yaba.”<br />
<br />
Nigeria is the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa and the third country to record the Coronavirus after Egypt and Algeria since its outbreak in Wuhan, China in December 2019.<br />
<br />
As of Friday, 83,000 cases have been confirmed, out of which 8,000 were classified as serious. At least 2,800 deaths have been recorded while more than 36,000 people have since recovered.<br />
<br />
Apart from China which has the highest number of cases, the Coronavirus has spread to over 20 countries of the world, including the United States, Japan, Italy, South Korea, Iran, Hong Kong, Australia and Taiwan.<br />
<br />
The World Health Organisation has since declared the disease outbreak as a global health emergency while scientists and pharmaceutical companies across the world are battling to find a vaccine for the disease.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>Lagos tracks 120 other passengers on Turkish Airlines with Italian</b><br />
<br />
Following the detection, the two state governments are making efforts to monitor all those who had come in contact with the patient.<br />
<br />
Hamzat said the government was trying to track everyone on the flight and everyone he had made contact with.<br />
<br />
He said, “What we are doing now is that he came in through one airline, so we are trying to track everybody on that flight. He went from Lagos to Ewekoro. Who has he met? What has happened? Those are the people that we are tracking, isolate them and then check.”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>28 workers quarantined in Lafarge’s Ogun factory</b><br />
<br />
In Ogun State, the governor, Mr Dapo Abiodun, while addressing journalists on the update on the disease detected in the state, said 28 persons who had contact with the patient had been identified and quarantined.<br />
<br />
The governor added that the firm where the victim was discovered in Ewekoro had been shut down, adding that efforts were on to identify more contacts, if any, to avoid the spread of the disease.<br />
<br />
Abiodun said, “The information we have is that the particular company in question has been practically shut down and they have set up two isolation centres within the premises. They have identified all those that have been in contact with this index, totaling about 28. All those 28 persons have been quarantined.<br />
<br />
“They are looking for and interviewing those contacts to find out who they might also have been in contact with so that they can ensure these set of people are also quarantined.”<br />
<br />
He, however, noted that government had stepped up advocacy and distributed protective equipment, adding that an app was being shared to the primary health workers to enable them to identify likely suspects.<br />
<br />
“However, we are quite worried that even when the sample is send to the lab, it will take up to six hours,” he added.<br />
<br />
Also, Lafarge in a statement by its Director, Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainable Development, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, said it had initiated medical protocol at its Ewekoro plant and that it had quarantined those who had contact with the patient.<br />
<br />
The statement partly reads, “The individual concerned works for a vendor that provides services to Lafarge Africa Plc in Ogun State. As a business, we have immediately identified the persons who had direct contact with the concerned individual. We have equally initiated isolation, quarantine and disinfection protocol.<br />
<br />
“Lafarge Africa is also working in close partnership with International SOS and our medical service provider, a leading global health company. Health and Safety remains a core value at Lafarge Africa and we intend to leverage this strength at this critical time.<br />
<br />
But, speaking on Arise TV on Friday as a guest on a programme, which was monitored by <b><i>NigerianEye,</i></b> the Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, pointed out that the people mostly at risk were those who were in close in close proximity to the patient.<br />
<br />
He said, “You know this is a virus that spreads by droplets; you have to be within one metre to two metres of the individual to really be at risk of being infected. So we’re not focusing completely at the same level of intensity at the entire plane; we are looking at people two rows behind, two rows in front and two seats on his right and left. That is the general protocol for this type of thing.<br />
<br />
“That’s the starting point; those are the people mostly at risk so we will identify them. You know this is a work we do fairly often, it’s just that there’s a lot of anxiety around this particular virus.”<br />
<br />
He promised that government would do its best to identify everyone involved and keep Nigerians informed. “We’ve been very proactive enabling Nigerians access to the information that they need to protect themselves,” he added.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>Authorities to extend surveillance to hotel, airport workers, others</b><br />
<br />
Investigations revealed that those who may have had contact with the patient include the passengers in the airplane, the cabin crew members who would have attended to him or come close to him, port health officials who administered the Passenger Self-Reporting Form, airport officials, like the Immigration official whom he returned his form to, Custom officials who could have checked his luggage at the arrival point.<br />
<br />
Others include the driver who conveyed him from the airport to the unnamed hotel he used in Lagos, the hotel staff members who attended to him, those who came in contact with him at the restaurant he must have used, the driver who drove him from Lagos to Ogun State, the staff members who came in contact with him at Lafarge and the workers at the hotel where he was lodged in Ogun State.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Ogun State Health Commissioner, Dr Tomi Coker, said the state, with the support of the Federal Government, was trying to get everyone the patient had contact with.<br />
<br />
He said, “The epidemiologists in the state being supported by Federal Government and Lagos State are trying to get every contact the patient had. It means we are going to phone them, get them, get in touch with them and monitor their temperature for two weeks.”<br />
<br />
While allaying the fears of the people of the state, she said every necessary step that needed to be taken had been taken to avert spread of the disease.

A faint picture of the Italian man who brought Coronavirus to Nigeria has been unveiled at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital where he is being isolated and treated.<br />

Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who displayed a picture he took with the index case on his twitter handle, said he spoke with the man and assured him that he would be taken care of.<br />

According to Abayomi, “I also visited the #COVID19 patient a male Italian national who is isolated at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, where he is been managed by our well trained staff. I spoke to him and assured him of @followlasg resolve to ensure he gets adequate care #ForAGreaterLagos<br />

“While at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, I took time to inspect the ongoing renovation of the isolation wards. The renovation should be completed in a couple of days. I am satisfied with the renovation and preparedness work in the hospital,” he said.<br />
<br />
The first case of the deadly Coronavirus was confirmed in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Thursday.<br />
<br />
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Abayomi, in a statement said Lagos State has confirmed its first case of COVID-19 and reported it to the Federal Ministry of Health.<br />
<br />
The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the outbreak in China in January 2020.<br />
<br />
According to Abayomi, the patient is an Italian citizen who entered Nigeria on the 25th of February from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit.<br />
<br />
“He fell ill on the 26th February and was transferred to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing. COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos,” he said.<br />
<br />
He said the government of Lagos State under the Governor as the COVID-19 Incident Commander, through the Lagos State Ministry of Health, has been strengthening measures to ensure that any outbreak in Lagos was controlled and contained quickly in collaboration with the multi-sectoral Coronavirus Preparedness Group, led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). We have immediately activated the State Emergency Operations Centre to respond to this case and implement firm control measures.<br />
<br />
“I wish to assure all Lagosians and Nigerians that we have been strengthening our preparedness since the first confirmation of cases in China. We will use all the resources made available by the State and the Federal Government to respond to this case,” he said.

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has suspended the Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, Professor Charles Quaker Dokubo over alleged corruption.<br />

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina on Friday said following numerous allegations and petitions surrounding the Presidential Amnesty Programme, the National Security Adviser (NSA) set up a Caretaker Committee to look into the activities of the programme, on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />

The statement said part of the Committee’s task was to ensure that allocated resources were properly utilized in consonance with government’s objective of alleviating problems in the Niger Delta region, and stamping out corruption in the Amnesty Programme.<br />

“Consequently, the NSA recommended to Mr President that the Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, Professor Charles Quaker Dokubo be suspended, a recommendation that has been approved and which takes immediate effect.<br />
<br />
“The President has also directed that the Caretaker Committee set up to review the programme should oversee the running of the programme henceforth, with a view to ensuring that government objectives are achieved,” the statement said.

Former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People's Democratic Party (nPDP) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has expressed concern over the delay in the arrest of Aisha Yesufu, of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign group, one week after a video clip in circulation allegedly showed the BBOG Co-coverner, threatening that erstwhile Governor of Rivers State and incumbent Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will face imminent assassination from the outlawed Boko Haram terrorist group.<br />

In the said clip, Madam Yesufu claimed that Dr. Amaechi managed to escape attack by the Boko Haram terrorist group in Kaduna, but however expressed confidence that the terrorist group will definitely come back for the Minister any moment.<br />

According to the video clip, Aisha Yesufu asserted vehemently, Amaechi, "YOU THINK YOU ARE SAFE BECAUSE YOU HAVE ESCAPED..." an obvious reference to a purported attack on a passenger train enroute Kaduna, as the Minister made his way to honour his friend, the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.<br />

Although the Minister has denied the attack, but Yesufu's insistence that although the Minister was attacked and only escaped death by whiskers, he may not find an escape route in a subsequent attack. This is a good prove that there is a plot to assassinate the Minister and that Aisha Yesufu is an accomplice to that satanic plot.<br />
<br />
The party chief said Nigerians should not for any reason take such a threat as one of those noisemaking tactics of this angry failed woman. He therefore urged the Security Agencies to arrest Aisha Yesufu to enable her explain in details the very essence of her video and why she is so sure that the Minister is not safe.<br />
<br />
Chief Eze advocated for improved security around Dr. Amaechi and other government officials, stressing that it will not be taken for nothing, should any harm come the way of the Minister.<br />

"I ask that the security around the Minister and other government Officials be beefed up".<br />
<br />
"Those of us who are associates of Amaechi will not take it kindly should any harm in any form happens to the Minister".<br />
<br />
Eze highlighted that Amaechi while as Governor of Rivers State has expressly stated that if the Nigerian Government does not do the needful, the menace of Boko Haram and other similar criminal setups will constitute a high risk development in the country in the nearest future. Today as a great statesman, his prediction is coming to pass. If other Segments of government in Nigeria have emulated the high standard that Amaechi set up during his days as Governor of Rivers State, the menace of Boko Haram would have been reduced to the barest minimum.<br />

One of the steps that Amaechi took to ensure security of Rivers State was purchasing high-tech security gadgets which were used to equip properly trained Police men in Rivers State. This led to the rapid reduction of crime and criminality in the state to the barest minimum that in one year there was no single armed robbery attack or kidnapping incident in the entire Rivers State. Amaechi is truly a patriotic leader whose insight and vision can be the solution to most of the problems pervading us as a nation, Eze maintained..<br />

Amaechi has the single honour in governance of this country when in a swoop, he employed over 13,500 Nigerians both Northerners, Yoruba's, IBO's as Teachers to reduce the skyrocketing rate of unemployment in Nigeria. No other government in Nigeria has achieved that feat.<br />

Apart from all these he set up Agricultural Centres in most areas of the State providing all manners of food stuffs to ensure that hunger was banished in Rivers State at the period of his reign. As we are all aware hunger is the main cause of insecurity in Nigeria today.<br />

During his reign, Rivers State was first in all areas of education in Nigeria. He established scholarship schemes to ensure that the less privileged get access to quality education. His foreign educational scheme still stands as a reference point to any serious government in Nigeria to copy. Lack of education amongst our children is one of the major causes of insecurity in this nation today.<br />

Eze highlighted that Amaechi has the singular honour among African Leaders to have based on his uncommon feats influenced the UNESCO to award Port Harcourt the capital of Rivers State a world status as the 2015 UNESCO World Book Capital City. He gave meaning to governance in Nigeria when he assumed office at various occasions as the Chairman of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly and Chairman, Nigeria Governors' Forum.<br />

Today as the Minister of Transportation, he has proved beyond every doubt that he has the key to unlock the potentials and greatness of this nation, so how on earth should he be targeted for assassination as claimed by this Aisha and the Security Agencies are just watching", Eze lamented.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The bill entitled ‘Establishment of the National Agency for the Education, Rehabilitation, De-radicalisation and Integration of Repentant Insurgents in Nigeria and for Other Connected Purposes’ passed first reading at the senate last week.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The bill is sponsored by Ibrahim Gaidam, senator representing Yobe east.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The proposed law has elicited debate among Nigerians with many condemning the move by the senator.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to the newspaper, the rehab commission will also be funded by 0.5 percent of the federal allocation to the six states in the north-east.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The agency shall establish and maintain a fund which will consist of initial take-off grant from the federal government; annual subvention from the government; states counterpart funding which will be deducted at source at 0.5 percent of their statutory allocation; 1 percent of the education Tax Fund (TETFund) and UBEC fund,” section 10 of the bill reportedly reads.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The bill also provides that the agency would be funded by grants in aid, gift, testamentary dispositions, endowments and donations.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">It also provides for foreign education for repentant insurgents.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The agency shall implement programmes geared towards the rehabilitation of beneficiaries, engage the services of offshore and Nigerian institutions in the pursuit of the educational needs of ex-agitators,” section 5 reads.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The proposed law provides that the chairman of the board of the agency will be appointed by the president subject to the confirmation of the senate.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">It said the the governing council of the agency will have one representative from each of the north-east states, one representative each of the stakeholders, three representatives of the impacted communities, one person from the army, air force, navy, police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps — all of whom must not be below the rank of lieutenant colonel.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The council will also have one representative each from the federal ministries of humanitarian affairs, finance, environment, petroleum resources, North-East Development Commission and the local content board.</div>

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Friday urged passengers, airlines and the general public in the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, not to entertain any fear, during the emergency simulation exercise.<br />
<br />
The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, made the announcement in a statement issued in Lagos.<br />
<br />
Yakubu explained that the exercise was an operational requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation for aerodrome.<br />
<br />
She said, “The exercise is aimed at ascertaining the level of preparedness of the airport in real life emergency situations.<br />

“Consequently, the FAAN will like to appeal to the public, especially those residing around the airport not to entertain any fear, as the exercise is only a mock.”<br />
