Buhari presides over low-key 56th independence anniversary

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday in Abuja presided over the celebration of Nigeria’s 56th Independence Anniversary with former Head of State, retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and other personalities in attendance.<br />

The low-key event, which took place at the Presidential Villa, was Buhari’s second independence celebration since he took over the leadership of the nation on May 29, last year.<br />
<br />
The Christian prayers were offered by the Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Christian Association of Nigeria, Israel Akonji. The Deputy Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Prof. Taofeeq Abdulazeez, offered the Muslim prayers.<br />
<br />
The event witnessed the inspection of new Guard/Quarter guard, silent drills, posting of sentries and colour, while weapons and uniforms were inspected to ensure conformity with military standards by the Commander, Brigade of Guards, Brig.-Gen. Musa Yusuf. Shortly after the ceremony, Buhari signed the anniversary register and released 56 pigeons from a cage.<br />

The Nigerian economy is one of the world’s least competitive, and currently ranks 127th out of 140 economies globally, a 2016-2017 report by the World Economic Forum, says.<br />

In the 2015-2016 edition of the Global Competitive Index, Nigeria ranked 124th out of 140 countries.<br />
<br />
The latest ranking means the country slipped five places when measured by the relative number of countries each year.<br />
<br />
In this year’s ranking, Mauritius, which is placed at 45th position, takes the lead among sub-Saharan African countries, followed by South Africa and Rwanda, ranked 47th and 52nd, respectively.<br />
<br />
The report, released on Wednesday, classifies Botswana as one of the fastest rising economies, in league with India, Jamaica, and Mexico.<br />
<br />
The southern African country moved seven steps upward, from the 71st position it occupied in 2015 to 64th position in the latest ranking, while India moved up 16 steps from 55th to 39th.<br />
<br />
Botswana, the world’s largest producer of diamonds, is reputed to be one of the most stable countries in Africa.<br />
<br />
Nigeria’s neighbour, Ghana, is ranked 114.<br />
<br />
Other West African countries that are ranked higher than Nigeria are: Côte d’Ivoire, 99th; Gabon, Cape Verde, 110th; 108th; Senegal, 112nd; Gambia, 123rd; Benin Republic, 124th; and Mali, 125th;<br />
<br />
Nigeria only fared better in this year’s ranking than a few African countries like Madagascar (128th), Congo Democratic Republic (129th), Liberia (131th), and Chad (136th).<br />

Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has confirmed the release of his wife, who was kidnapped along Benin-Agbor road on Thursday.<br />

Expressing gratitude to God and President Muhammadu Buhari for her release, Emefiele vowed to continue serving the country “without any fear of intimidation”.<br />

In a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, Emefiele said his wife was rescued on Friday night.<br />
<br />
He praised security agencies for their “gallantry” in bringing her back home within 24 hours in compliance with the directive of the president.<br />
<br />
He also expressed his gratitude to the Delta and Edo state governments, friends and well-wishers who, through their actions, prayers and goodwill, helped to bring this harrowing experience to a joyful end.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has lampooned the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for the current state of the economy.<br />

The PDP observed that since the APC came into power almost two years ago, Nigerians have been facing several problems as a result of poor leadership and implementation of policies that were anti-people.<br />
<br />
PDP chairman in Niger State, Mr. Tanko Beji, in a statement to mark Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary regretted that Niger state had not fared better under the rulership of the APC government of Abubakar Sani Bello.<br />
<br />
“Niger State has not fared better under the leadership of “the clueless, visionless and rudderless APC government.<br />
<br />
“It is sad that virtually all the social infrastructures like water, roads, health facilities etc inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government by the APC has been allowed to rot away thereby making the sufferings of the people become more unbearable”, Beji said.‎<br />
<br />
Tanko Beji recalled that the APC government declared state of emergencies on water, education and the health sectors but argued that “nothing tangible has been done to redress the deplorable conditions”.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Bihari, has appealed to Nigerians to bear with his government in the face of the economic recession.<br />
<br />
Buhari, in his Independence Anniversary message, assured that the situation “will not last”.

He could be charged with bringing the game into disrepute according to FA chief executive Martin Glenn.<br />
<br />
Allardyce was axed on Tuesday after just 67 days and one game in charge after being filmed giving advice to undercover reporters on how to get around FA transfer rules.<br />

Glenn confirmed last night that Allardyce could be charged over his controversial comments.<br />
<br />
“It is realistic he could be charged," said Glenn. “The newspaper that made the revelations are releasing the full transcripts to the police, which is what has to happen.<br />
<br />
“Once we get full access to them we'll pass them to our Integrity Unit. We've dealt with Sam as an employee. Sam's role as a participant in the game will be part of this next process, if there is one.<br />
<br />
“The decision will be based on the merits of the evidence. Bringing the game into disrepute might be a possible charge.<br />
<br />
“A potential sanction could range from a fine to a ban. That's what history shows. But that is for a tribunal to decide."<br />

The  Christian Association of Nigeria has appealed to Nigerians to support the Federal Government in its effort to make the country great again.<br />

The Secretary of Kaduna State chapter of the association, Rev. Sunday Ibrahim, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna on Saturday.<br />

Ibrahim urged Nigerians to give leaders of the country time to fix the nation’s socio-economic and political problems.<br />
<br />
“Yes, it is disturbing that the country is 56 and people are still suffering, but it is only a matter of time and things would turn around for good.<br />
<br />
“As followers, we should stop lamenting and contribute our quota toward building the nation to greater heights. Let’s be positive in our thought and actions and continue to pray for our dear country.<br />
<br />
“I am confident that the storm will soon be over and Nigeria shall be great again. Let us give our leaders more time and I am sure they will fix the country,” he said.<br />
<br />
He, however, called on the leaders to stop complaining about flaws of past administrations and channel all resources, intellect and time to fix the nation.<br />
<br />
He said that at 60, Nigeria would be among the comity of great nations, adding that the country had all its takes to be great.<br />
<br />
Ibrahim lauded Federal Government’s efforts toward improving security in the country, but called for more prayers to ensure success in the fight against insurgency.<br />
<br />
He also urged the government to step up its economic programmes to end the suffering of Nigerians.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State on Saturday said it had apprehended a suspected fake army general in Minna.<br />

Commander Philip Ayuba, Commandant of NSCDC, in the state made the disclosure while presenting the suspect before newsmen in Minna.<br />
<br />
“The suspected fake army General you are seeing specialises in defrauding unemployed applicants by promising them job in either the military or paramilitary outfits in the country,’’ Ayuba said.<br />
<br />
He said the suspect, Mohammed Usman alias General Ishiaku is 41 years old and from Katcha Local Government Area of the state.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ayuba explained that the suspect was arrested by an undercover team of NSCDC in Minna metropolis after he had concluded plan to collect a balance of N450,000 bargained for a job in NSCDC.<br />
<br />
The NSCDC Commander said the suspected accomplice of the suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim, was at large.<br />
<br />
He said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was completed.<br />
<br />
The suspect, while speaking with newsmen, pleaded for forgiveness and said, “I will not do it again, it was the handiwork of the devil.”

The Federal Government says it has outlined various developmental programmes that will revive the nation’s economy, restore the value of the naira and “drive hunger from our land.’’<br />

President Muhammadu Buhari said this in a national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Anniversary in Abuja on Saturday .<br />

Buhari said the programmes, included the constructions and rehabilitation of new roads, housing and power projects across the country, adding that already the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing had received N197.5 billion for the execution of some of the projects. According to him, already contractors have recalled 9,000 workers laid off and several hundreds of thousands of workers will be reengaged in the next few months as our public works programme gains momentum.<br />

He said the affected roads were the dualisations of Calabar- Itu Road in Cross River/Akwa Ibom, Lokoja-Benin Road, Ehor=Benin city and reconstruction of outstanding sections of Benin-Shagamu Expressway Edo/Ogun. Others were the expansion works on Lagos-Ibadan Dual carriageway (Ogun/Oyo); rehabilitation of Onitsha-Enugu Expressway (Anambra/Enugu); and rehabilitation and reconstruction of Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway.<br />

He said the rehabilitation of Hadejia-Nguru Road, dualisation of Kano-Katsina Road in Kano State, dualisation of Kano-Maiduguri Road, dualisation of Azare-Potiskum Road, Azare-Sharuri Road, Bauchi State, would also be carried out.<br />

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly struck a temporary custody agreement Friday that will grant full physical custody of the couple's six children to Angelina Jolie while Brad Pitt will be subjected to random voluntary drug testing and an initial supervised visit with his kids.<br />

According to TMZ reports, the initial visit, will be supervised by a therapist who will then decide if Pitt's future visits need to be monitored or not.<br />
<br />
The terms will last for three weeks before the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)can make new recommendations.<br />

Pitt was under investigation by DCFS after the agency received an anonymous tip that Pitt had attacked his 15-year-old son Maddox while on a flight back from France.<br />
<br />
The tipster reported Pitt as "physically" and "verbally abusive" towards the pair's eldest child.<br />
<br />
The temporary divorce agreement also subjects Pitt to random drug and alcohol testing.<br />
<br />
According to news reports, Pitt took a voluntary drug test after the airplane incident. A source told TMZ.<br />

A prominent member of the Peoples  Democratic Party, PDP has described ‘October 1st’ under President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government as the worst ever in the history of independence day celebrations in the country.<br />

Adeyanju’s statement reads: The is typically a day of celebration for Nigeria and Nigerians. It signifies the day Nigeria achieved independence from colonial rule and began the journey towards nationhood.<br />
<br />
In the past, October 1st was a day celebrated with pomp and pageantry as Nigerians savoured the taste of liberty. In the past, October 1st was a day Nigerians put aside whatever challenges faced us as a nation and, together, shared the very essence of being Nigerian.<br />
<br />
However, October 1st 2016 is not a day of celebration. It is not a day of pomp nor is it a day to bask in the euphoria of a fulfilled nation. It is a day to spend in deep reflection about the worrying socio-political and economic state of our nation.<br />
<br />
At the inception of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration on May 29th, 2016 many expected that he would move quickly to heal a nation sharply divided by the election season, and take urgent steps to maintain the Nigerian economy on a path of economic growth.<br />
<br />
Indeed, the statement in his inaugural speech about belonging to everybody and belonging to nobody gave credence to this hope. Alas, President Buhari has furthered those divides by his words and conduct.<br />
<br />
It is common knowledge that Nigeria is at its most fractured state, along ethnic and religious lines, perhaps since the Civil War. President Buhari has by his words, actions and inactions constantly stoked the fires of sectarian tensions creating an atmosphere of distrust and strife.<br />
<br />
This administration has failed Nigerians on so many other fronts in 2016 such that millions of Nigerians simply do not feel Independence Day is worth celebrating. For instance, its human rights record is appalling.<br />
<br />
Despite an international outcry, the government has failed to prosecute a single person for the mass murder of over 1,000 Shiite Muslims by the military in December 2015. Their leader has been detained since December 2015 along with his wife without charge despite both of them suffering severe injuries during the attack. The military has gone on to summarily execute 100s of members of IPOB without recourse to the rule of law.<br />
<br />
Opponents of the ruling party, including journalists and online bloggers/social commentators, have been arrested and detained for varying periods without charge or in violation of valid court orders. The greatest freedoms we achieved as a nation by being free is the freedom of association, worship, speech and even freedom after speech which had become more visible from 1999-2016 under the PDP years are freedoms that is now threatened by the tyrannic nature of this regime.<br />
<br />
At 56, Nigerians now live in fear of expression. On the economic front, the incoherent policies of the Buhari administration have led us into the worst economic crises in 29 years. Consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth confirm that the country is officially in a recession yet no one can point to a coherent, cogent plan to overcome this situation.<br />
<br />
An unprecedented 4.58million people have lost their jobs since the inception of this administration, the prices of food have risen astronomically to the point where people can no longer afford food and resort to stealing pots of food from the fire, inflation has hit 17.5% which has in the process caused prices of other goods & services to go through the roof and so on. The absolutely shambolic monetary policies of this administration have ensured that the Naira is thus far the worst performing currency globally after the Vietnamese Bolivar and the Suriname Dollar.<br />
<br />
As the time of writing this, the exchange rate is $1 – N490, £1 – N600 and €1 – N520. While we can appreciate sustained progress in the fight against boko haram, that war is not yet over. Only 3 days ago, BBC reported the capture of several towns by the terrorist group and the hoisting of their flags in those areas.<br />
<br />
In the North Central region of Nigeria, and parts of Kaduna, the menace of herdsmen has gone on unchecked.<br />
<br />
It is on record that herdsmen have killed more than 1000 people in 2016 alone, making them the fourth most deadly terrorist group in the world. This administration has barely even acknowledged this ongoing genocide against the peoples of North Central Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Kidnappings have become brazen and frequent, cultism is rising unchecked in parts of the country and so on. At the time of writing this, reports had just broken out about the kidnap of the wife of the CBN governor.<br />
<br />
All these indices, paint a picture of the grim reality into which the Buhari administration has forced on Nigeria. These facts paint a picture of the reasons why Nigerians find it difficult to celebrate on Independence Day.<br />
<br />
Perhaps most painful part of the current socio-political and economic reality that has Nigeria suffers on her 56 birthday is that in the midst of all this – 17% inflation, -2% GDP growth, more than 4millions jobs lost; President Buhari yesterday launched his own photo-book at the State House, Aso Rock.<br />
<br />
One is hard pressed to escape the conclusion that President Buhari is more concerned about his image than the severe havoc his policies are wrecking on the nation. Another thing that threatens our progress as a nation is the reversing of all electoral gains we have made from 1999-2015.<br />
<br />
Elections are now either inconclusive or outrightly rigged as it was in the case of #EdoDecides where fake results was announced by INEC and the APC candidate Godwin Obaseki declared as winner. But in all this, we must celebrate the indomitable Nigerian spirit. We must celebrate our ability to preserve in spite of damning odds. We must celebrate our ability to thrive in spite of the government’s determination to be a stumbling block in our path.<br />
<br />
We must celebrate because as Nigerians, we share a collective ability to bend but not break in the face of horrible circumstances. So even while we take time to reflect on the horrible circumstances in which we are being forced to live, we must take time to celebrate the knowledge that because we are Nigerians – WE SHALL OVERCOME.<br />

Fifty Nigerian students are currently being detained in Turkey on the alleged orders of the government.<br />

According to reports, a relative of one of the detained students, said the passports of those affected were confiscated.<br />
<br />
“Upon arrival at Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, they were all escorted to a room and their passport confiscated by Turkish police,” the relative was quoted as saying.<br />
<br />
“When they enquired why they were clamped in a dirty room, the police said they are students of a terrorist organisation. They offered to transfer them to government schools but on the condition that we will pay same fees as private universities.”<br />
<br />
Most of the detained Nigerians are said to be students of Fatih University, one of the private institutions in Turkey.<br />
<br />
The Fathi University is among the 2099 schools, dormitories and universities shut down in the wake of the July 15 failed coup in the country.<br />
<br />
Abike Dabiri, senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora, said she was not aware of  the development.<br />
<br />
“Just hearing from you, if we do get the report, we will react,” she said in response to inquiries by TheCable.<br />
<br />
Two weeks after the botched coup, Hakan Cakil, Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, called on the federal government to close 17 Turkish schools in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He alleged that the schools had links with a movement involved in the coup attempt.<br />
<br />
According to him, investigations by the Turkish government have linked the Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) to the failed coup attempt, which claimed over 300 lives.<br />
<br />
He said the Turkish government was dissociating itself from any school bearing the country’s name in Nigeria, adding that while the country had schools in other countries, it had none in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He later disclosed that some Nigerians studying in private Turkish universities had been transferred to public schools owing to the closure of their institutions.<br />
<br />
Cakil said the students would pay little or no tuition in their new place of study.<br />

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a man who used packs of chicken flavoured noodles to smuggle cannabis through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) in Enugu State on a China-bound plane.<br />

According to the NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the cannabis was carefully prepared inside packs of noodles to avoid detection. The suspect identified as Benson Onyechi Esonwunne, was attempting to board an Ethiopian Airways flight from Nigeria to China when he convinced an innocent passenger to carry the box of packaged chicken flavored noodles for him on the plane.<br />
"It is instructive that people be aware of this trick because what they consider as an assistance may just send them to prison or early graves. This is because drug trafficking is punishable by death in China." Mr Ofoyeju said.<br />
The statement from NDLEA also said that Mr. Esonwunne had been deported from China two times prior for immigration offenses in 2008 and on May of this year. The suspect said that he began trafficking drugs because Nigeria’s economy was so poor, and its exchange rate so unfavorable, that he needed to turn to the illegal activity to get by.<br />
<br />
The NDLEA said the man will face charges for his crime.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, arrested a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Benjamin Benedict Apugo.<br />

His arrest at his village, Nkata Ibeku, in Abia State follows a July 4, 2016 warrant issued to that effect by a Federal High Court in Umuahia presided over by Justice D.E. Osiagor after the accused failed to appear before the court to take his plea on a three count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretense brought against him by the EFCC.<br />
<br />
He was alleged to have fraudulently sold six (6) plots of land valued at N36.000,000 (Thirty Six million naira only) belonging to the Nigeria Railway Cooperation located at Umunwulari Nkata Ibeku layout, Planning Scheme Umuahia.<br />
<br />
A previous warrant was issued for his arrest of the defendant on 8th October, 2015 by Justice F.A. Olubanjo after he had failed to appear before the court on same charge.<br />
<br />
Apugo, through his counsel, Professor Earnest Ojukwu, SAN tried to frustrate the case on three previous instances either by applying for the quashing or the transfer of the case to another judge.<br />
<br />
Vanguard reports that after Justice Olubanjo was transferred and Justice Evelyn Anyadike took over the matter, Ojukwu (SAN) moved a motion to quash the charge and set aside the bench warrant which was refused prompting him to petition the Chief Judge stating that the defendant has no confidence in the judge.<br />
<br />
The Chief Judge then transferred the case to the present judge, Justice Osiagor who heard the two applications and in a considered ruling, dismissed application to quash the charge and suspended the bench warrant.<br />
<br />
He, however, ordered the defendant to appear before him pursuant to Section 87 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 on the next adjourned date of July 4, 2016, an appointment which for the umpteenth time, the APC chieftain failed to honour necessitating the latest arrest warrant to produce him in court on Wednesday October 11,2016.<br />

One of the charges against the defendant reads: “That you Prince Benedict Benjamin Apugo on or about the 7th day of March 2013 in Umuahia within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud obtained the sum of six million naira (N6,000,000.00) from one Mr Obioma Nehemiah Isiuwa, when you falsely represented yourself through his agent, Mrs. Adline Victor Nkwo, to be the owner of six plots of land valued at thirty-six million Naira (N36,000,000.00) located at the House of Assembly Road by Ochendo By-Pass in Umunwulari Nkata Ibeku layout, Umuahia, Umuahia -North Local Government Area, Abia State otherwise called Ogurube layout, which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same Act.”<br />

Meanwhile, an Abuja High Court has ruled that accounts belonging to Governor Fayose, which were frozen since June by the EFCC, should remain so till November 7.

Super Eagles chief coach, Salisu Yusuf, has said the country failed to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, because the players did not do enough.<br />

The former Kano Pillars handler, however says the players can ensure Nigeria qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, if they push themselves.<br />

A 1-0 defeat to Egypt earlier this year, ended Nigeria’s chances of playing at the continental competition.<br />

“The players did not give what they were supposed to give (and so we failed to qualify again for the AFCON),” Yusuf, who was involved in all the qualifiers with Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh and Samson Siasia, said.<br />

“The players fought like home-based players in the friendly against Mali and I believe that will better self motivation, they will be at the World Cup.<br />
<br />
“They are already producing high performances at their various European clubs and we expect them to give more to be at the World Cup.”<br />

The Eagles will begin their quest to be at the next World Cup next week against Zambia in Ndola . Yusuf has urged the players based abroad, to adapt to whatever conditions they face.<br />

“We must adapt to the African environment. With players with strong character, a bad pitch won’t make any difference after about 15 minutes, when you would have familiarize yourself with it,” he concluded.</div>

The Chairman , House Committee on Information in the Ekiti Stat House of Assembly, Hon Gboyega Aribisogan, has denied the allegation of ganging up with those opposed to Governor Ayodele Fayose within the‎ Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and beyond to derail his administration.<br />

<div>Aribisogan said he had displayed unflinching loyalty and commitment to the Fayose’s political empire, even at the most difficult times, adding that those peddling the rumour were not only plotting to divide the assembly, but had begun desperate moves for the 2019 elections.</div>

<div>The Deputy Speaker, Hon Segun Adewumi and Aribisogan, narrowly escaped impeachment and subsequent suspension on Tuesday for allegedly hobnobbing with Senator Buruji Kashamu, presidential Adviser on Political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and an eminent lawyer, Femi Falana, to heat up the polity and create atmosphere of crisis in the state.</div>

<div>Despite that the duo of Adewumi and Aribisogan, representing Ekiti West and Ikole constituencies 1 respectively, escaped being suspended over the allegation, a source in the assembly hinted‎ that the assembly members were still plotting to suspend the lawmakers .</div>

<div>They were also alleged to be fraternizing with the embattled PDP secretary in Ekiti, Dr Tope Aluko, a former PDP Chieftain and now APC Stalwart, Yinka Akerele and others to pull the government down.</div>

The House of Representatives has rejected a motion to re-introduce toll gates on roads.<br />

Rejecting the motion sponsored by Rep Francis Charles Uduyok (PDP, A/Ibom), the House said Nigerians should not be subjected to another form of hardship, especially at a time the country was in hardship.<br />
<br />
Uduyok had in his motion said Nigerian roads were in bad conditions and that toll gates would help in maintenance and construction of inter-state roads.<br />
<br />
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had also in May stated that only the National Assembly can give go-ahead for re-introduction of toll gates to generate additional revenue for government.<br />
<br />
The House also deliberated on kidnappings on some major highways in the country.<br />
Adopting a motion by Rep Muhammad Usman (APC, Kaduna), the House said that the Abuja-Kaduna highway had become a den of kidnappers.<br />
<br />
Usman lamented that despite the busy nature of the road, killings and kidnappings had become frequent on the road.<br />
<br />
He said the kidnappings had terrible socio-political consequences in and outside Nigeria.

The Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this in Katsina, on Thursday, at the 22nd National Council of Works meeting.<br />

According to him, the Federal Government has, so far, spent N73 billion on road projects across the country.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the meeting has “Prioritisation and Optimisation of Allocated Road Infrastructure Funds” as its theme.<br />
<br />
The minister said that the expenditure had been worth it because it would enhance the socio-economic development of the country.<br />
<br />
He added that the amount spent was part of the N266 billion appropriated in the 2016 federal budget.<br />
<br />
He noted that the money was used to settle contractors’ liabilities and road rehabilitation across the country.<br />
<br />
He, however, said that the Federal Government would henceforth hold the 36 state controllers of works responsible for poor quality job on Federal Highways in their respective areas.<br />
<br />
He said “state controllers of works are the representatives of the Federal Government in their respective states; we will give them all they need to carry out the job.<br />
<br />
“They must, however, ensure that quality job is done on our roads or be held responsible.”<br />
<br />
Fashola then directed the controllers to identify roads that were in bad condition, restore road signs on the highways, erect kilometer indicators and properly erect sign posts of towns and villages.<br />
<br />
In his remarks, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State said the state government empowered its road maintenance agency for the rehabilitation of state roads.<br />
<br />
He said over 50 per cent of vehicles plying the roads were, however, not roadworthy.<br />
<br />
Masari urged the relevant authorities to intensify efforts in preventing motorists from overloading their vehicles to reduce accidents.

This is the second independence celebration since Jonathan handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />

Nigeria is 56 years old today. Consequently it is time to speak some home-truths and look at where we are in the scheme of things.<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a><br />
<br />
It is time to consider how well our governnent has fared since coming to power and to compare their record of service to previous governments that were in the saddle before them. Sadly the score sheet does not look too good.<br />
<br />
The rigging of elections, the persecution of opposition figures, the demonisation of dissenters, the destruction of the economy, the pauperisation of our people, the introduction of famine, the humiliation of Nigerians coupled with violence, impunity, aggression, intolerance and tyranny: that is all President Muhammadu Buhari and his government have served our people since he was sworn in on May 29th 2015.<br />
<br />
The last one year and four months have been the worst since independence in terms of the violation of human rights, civil liberties and court orders by our government.<br />
<br />
We have witnessed unprecedented mass murder, butchery, carnage and barbarity by well-armed and highly favored Fulani herdsmen and ethnic militias coupled with genocide and unprecedented extra-judicial killings by our military personnel and state security forces.<br />
<br />
We have witnessed the resurrection of Abubakar Shekau and the mutation of Boko Haram into two powerful new factions. We have seen them re-take towns and communities that they lost years ago and hoist their dirty black flag in parts of the north-east.<br />
<br />
Our government have given up on the Chibok girls and we witnessed the humiliation, insults and physical harassment by security forces that those who have fought for their return in the BBOG group have been subjected to in the last few months.<br />
<br />
We have have seen the rapid depreciation of the naira, the total decimation of our industrial, agricultural and manufacturing sector and the destruction and decay of virtually all our roads, airports, power generating facilities and infra-structures.<br />
<br />
Our government has squandered our foreign reserves. Driven away local and foreign investment. Caused the dollar to fly away. Created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the markets.<br />
<br />
Forced people to spend their life savings and capital just to survive. Reduced many Nigerians to eating just one meal a day. Caused many to withdraw their children from school simply because they cannot afford to pay fees. And they have driven many to depression, suicide and despair.<br />
<br />
Unemployment is at a record high. The banks and indeed the entire financial sector is dying because there is no liquidity. The naira is approaching 500 naira to one US dollar which represents an over 100 per cent depreciation in the space of one year.<br />
<br />
We are in the middle of the worst economic recession that we have suffered in our 56 years of exsitence as an independent nation-state.<br />
<br />
Thousands are being laid off on a daily basis. Graduate and non-graduate unemployment is at a record high. Food prices, the price of transport and the price of fuel, diesal and kerosene have shot up.<br />
<br />
Finally we have witnesed the total and complete dashing of the hopes, aspirations and dreams of the Nigerian people.<br />
<br />
Our government is corrupt, weak, paranoid, incompetent, cowardly, fearful of criticism, terrified of a strong opposition, unable to cope with dissent, insensitive, delusional, wicked, sociopathic and psycopathic.<br />
<br />
Worse still they have attracted the opprobium, contempt, derision and scorn of the entire international community and the derision of major corporate investors and multi-national corporations.<br />
<br />
The only thing that they are good at doing is blaming President Jonathan and indeed all past PDP Presidents and governments, including President Obasanjo, for their failures and inability to perform.<br />
<br />
They are also pretty good at conducting media trials and witchunts and indulging in Soviet-style propaganda and the demonisation of their perceived enemies.<br />
<br />
Yet most frightening of all is the fact that our President is out of touch with reality. He does not appear to be living in the 21st century.<br />
<br />
His solutions and remedies to the complex economic problems of a modern-nation state in 2016 are the same ones that he proffered and which failed him woefully when he was military Head of State between 1983 and 1985. We really appear to be going down the drain under his leadership.<br />
<br />
I pray that God intervenes soon and does something extraordinary because this accursed government simply has to go.<br />
<br />
They have divided us along religious and ethnic lines more than any government in our entire history. They have come to spread poverty and distribute shame.<br />
<br />
They have sought to islamise our country, demean our faith, disgrace the Church and undermine our Christian leaders and clerics.<br />
<br />
They have destabilised our nation and undermined our unity to such an extent that the majority of our people secretly despise and covertly pray against the continuation of a united Nigeria.<br />
<br />
They have brought us to our very knees, turned us into a nation of beggars and paupers and reduced us to cowardly and timid slaves.<br />
<br />
They seek to break us, cause us to crawl, crush our spirits, torment our souls and compel us to accept a North Korean-style system of government with its cultic worship of a maximum ruler who sees himself as a demi-god and deity that must be obeyed and worshipped by all.<br />
<br />
Such is Mr. Presidents desire and craving for worship and such has the spirit if narcissus seized and possessed him that he even had a man arrested, detained and prosecuted for daring to name his dog after him.<br />
<br />
Yet thankfully they will fail in their quest because the Living God, from whom nothing is hidden, will not allow them to succeed. They will fail because ultimately good will always prevail over evil.<br />
<br />
They will fail because no matter what they do they cannot separate us from the love of the Lord. They will fail because the God that we serve is mighty and He is faithful to His own.<br />
<br />
Permit me to digress. I have been reliably informed that my life and liberty has become a major source of irritation and anger for the maximum ruler.<br />
<br />
I have been told that he hates me so much that he has issued orders that his gestapo should come for me again and this time around to torture me or even poison me whilst I am in their custody. Yet I count it all as joy.<br />
<br />
I laugh them all to scorn. If only they knew the God that I serve. If only they could comprehend the nature of He who sent me and who works through me.<br />
<br />
If only they knew the source of their numerous problems and why they are going through all that they are going through. If only they knew why they are groping in hopelessness, dancing with failure and hobbling in the dark.<br />
<br />
If only they knew that you cannot fight against the Holy Spirit or battle against the Lord. If only they knew the power of God and the efficacy and power of the scripture that says "touch not my annointed and do my prophets no harm".<br />
<br />
As long as they seek to do nothing but pursue, demean, misrepresent, destroy and kill the defenceless and innocent who have done no wrong, the Angel of the Lord will continue to pursue them along a dark and slippery path.<br />
<br />
He will frustrate all their efforts, plagues shall torment them, failure shall trail them and peace shall continue to elude them.<br />
<br />
For the record the bottom line is as follows: yours truly would rather die than be silenced or be compelled to bow down and worship Baal and his accursed disciples.<br />
<br />
As long as there is breath in me, no matter what, I will exercise my God-given right of expression and I will fight and oppose the evil soul that presides over the affairs of our nation because he has brought nothing but suffering, hardship, pain, shame and tears to our people and to our land.<br />
<br />
He is the proverbial "darkness that seeks the darkness". Yet, in the end, his own darkness will overwhelm him and the light and power of the Living God will bring him down to his knees and remove him from his exalted and dizzy heights.<br />
<br />
And if I should fall before that time, posterity will be kind to me and men will know that there once lived a man who spoke the bitter truth about the powers that once were and who saw tomorrow.<br />
<br />
Yet the beast remains as relentless as ever because, like satan, his time is short. Worse still he has turned on his own.<br />
<br />
It is no longer Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, his loyalists and leading members of the PDP that are being targetted anymore.<br />
<br />
Now the erstwhile allies and friends of Baal's tiny cabal within the ruling party itself have also been listed for "special attention" and the torments of the evil eye in the next few months and years even if they don't know it yet.<br />
<br />
Such is the nature and way of Baal. He simply does not know when to stop. Like Pharaoh his heart has been hardened unto destruction so that, at the end of the day, when nemesis catches up with him, the name of the Lord will be glorified.<br />
<br />
Like Nebuchadnezzar, he will be brought to his knees and he will crawl like a grass-eating beast in the forest until his eyes are opened and he acknowldges the majesty and awesome power of the Lord God of Hosts and the Ancient of Days.<br />
