We must resist their divide-and-rule strategies,” it said. <p>The statement further read, “The government of the day has continued to turn a deaf ear to the agitations of labour unions and cries of the masses.</p> <p>“They often request patience and understanding. Yet, impunity, financial impropriety and corruption have become the trademark of this Buhari-led administration.</p> <p>“The Nigerian government continues to pass the burden of hardship and misery to Nigerian workers and the masses. The abductions and killings of students at all levels have become embarrassing to the country. Human beings are now a commodity of trade in Nigeria. This portends nothing but doom for the future of Nigeria.”</p> <p>Akinwole said despite the “terrible” conditions, the government continued to label constructive and objective criticisms as “hate speech” when the citizens speak truth to power.</p> <p>On his part, Atiku decried what he referred to as the persistent and frightening economic decimation of the living standard of Nigerian workers.</p> <p>He expressed displeasure with the growing rate of inflation which he said had pushed many workers into poverty.</p> <p>In his May Day message titled ‘Atiku bemoans economic decimation of workers,’ signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, the ex-VP said, “The Nigerian workers have never had it so bad. The impacts of the lockdown and worsening inflation have taken their heaviest toll on the working class. The situation is so bad that they are now living from hand to mouth.”</p> <p>Atiku further called for a reduction in the cost of governance to improve the lot of workers.</p> <p>Meanwhile, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, on Friday, sought improved welfare for workers across the country.</p> <p>They stated this in separate messages to commemorate the International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day.</p> <p>Lawan, in a statement by his media aide, Ola Awoniyi, said Nigerian workers across the generations had continued to drive economic productivity, nation-building and democratic governance.</p> <p>He said, “The Nigerian labour movement has a proud heritage beginning from the heroic contributions of its founding fathers like Pa Micheal Imodu and his contemporaries in the struggle for the independence of Nigeria and emancipation of workers and the masses.</p> <p>“I commend their patience, understanding and also their resilience in the face of the current challenges that our nation is facing.</p> <p>“The National Assembly believes in the well-being and welfare of the workers and will always provide legislative support for every effort to tackle their challenges and improve the work environment.”</p> <p>In his message, Fayemi assured workers in the state of his administration’s resolve to continue to accord their welfare a priority, despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the state’s accruals from the Federation Account and Internally Generated Revenue.</p> <p>The governor, who lauded the workers’ contribution to the social and economic development of the state, said they had demonstrated brilliance and commitment in the implementation of his administration’s five-pillar development agenda.</p>

The President especially does not want to do it, but the economic realities are staring us in the face.</p> <a name='more' id="more"></a> <p>“Can we continue to support the subsidy, which is not necessarily benefiting the ordinary person, but is benefiting certain individuals who are businessmen in the country? I don’t want to identify the people that are benefiting.</p> <p>“Subsidy is not directly benefitting Nigerians; the biggest contact with Nigerians is kerosene consumption used by local persons for cooking; as for diesel, it is used to transport food items and so on. But these have been deregulated for a long time now.”</p> <p>According to him, PMS, which he said is not the preferred fuel of the common man, continues to defy deregulation. It is going to be on 15 hectares of land, we are currently reclaiming the lands.</p> <p>“We have appointed the contractors, work will start this year and it will become the focal point of our mental health strategy where we will provide Lagosians with access to mental health services and train persons who are skilled in recognizing and treating mental health”.</p> <p>The Commissioner hinted that the state government will expend resources to address mental health issues particularly as it affects emerging issues of stress, anxiety, stigmatization and mental health disorders associated with a mega city like Lagos.</p> <p>While noting that mental health is one of the disciplines in health that has been neglected, Abayomi averred that the present administration is trying to make up for the neglect by investing in infrastructure and human resource development to manage and address mental health issues.</p> <p>“So while we plan to commemorate this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month in May, we will keep going with a lot of energy. We will ensure that we develop the human resources that are able to manage mental disorders, more importantly create the opportunity to detect tell-tale science very early and treat them before they become serious problems, and at the end, just making life easier for Lagosians will go a long way to easing mental disorder, mental stress and mental anxiety”, he said.</p> <p>Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye said the COVID19 pandemic and its ensuing response including the lockdown strategy brought to fore some health issues that are linked to mental health prompting the need for improved access to mental health services.</p> <p>He said: “The Ministry of Health recognized early that there is a reason to strengthen our mental health program and our mental health response and this is what led to the setup of the Lagos Lifeline. We have a team of dedicated staff led by Dr Ajumale who has been extremely committed to this process to help set up the help line”.</p> <p>Explaining how the Lifeline works, Ogboye said “we have people who have been trained in responding to callers. People call in and speak with one of our trained Lifeline counselors who find out what the challenges are and provide help as required.</p> <p>“Sometimes the Lifeline contact ends with that single conversation and sometimes it requires further engagement. The Lifeline counselors are volunteers and they sometimes reach back to people or take calls back again from people. There is a back and front that resolves issues and sometimes we refer specific mental health issues to mental professionals for further engagement and management”.</p> <p>The Permanent Secretary stated that the Lifeline is a 24hours service that has linkage to a much bigger program and services for mental health in Lagos state.</p> <p>Also speaking, the Head Special Projects and State Mental Health Desk Officer, Dr. Tolu Ajomale explained that the goals of the Lifeline are to: provide Psychological First Aid and Social Support service, alleviate the strain on existing public health resources by creating a coordination point to refer patients for appropriate care and serve as a Mental Health campaign Feedback system.</p> <p>Other goals according to him are to: create valuable data points that can be used to track prevalence and cycle of care for Mental Health in Lagos State, access to mental health services for patients in hard-to-reach areas, improve linkages for victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence and Suicidal Threats and Emergency Medical Services.</p>

Before the day of the incident, we held a vigil and she was fine. Her fasting was supposed to be for 14 days, but the incident happened on the 10th day. God is my witness, there is nothing hidden here.</p> <p>“Her daughter, Oluwatise, was also with her in the church during the spiritual exercise and they always slept together. The incident happened around 7am. I was praying on the altar when one of the church members informed me that she had passed out.</p> <p>“When I moved closer to assess her, I observed that she could not stand up and when I called her name, she answered faintly. We had to rush her to the Igando General Hospital for treatment, but she died.”</p> <p>The pastor explained that he went to the Idimu Police Station to report the incident, adding that during investigation, the police detained him and the General Overseer of the church.</p> <p>He stated, “When I reported the incident, the police took my statement and that of the victim’s daughter. But the General Overseer and I were detained for three days and the police also visited the church to conduct an investigation.</p> <p>“But the family insisted on not pressing any charge and after the police investigation, we were released. I met with the woman’s family immediately after the incident and they accepted what happened as fate.</p> <p>“During the spiritual exercise, she was fasting and praying, and usually broke her fasts with honey and water. But on the 10th day, she became very weak and we had to rush her to hospital to save her, but she died.</p> <p>“After the incident, we insist that anyone embarking on fasting and prayer in the church must break with pap instead of honey and water that we usually use. Anyone who refuses won’t be allowed to embark on the spiritual exercise in the church.”</p> <p>Further findings revealed that the family was making plans to convey the victim’s remains from the Yaba General Hospital mortuary to her hometown in Ekiti State for the burial rites.</p> <p>A source, however, told our correspondents that Owoyele had been fasting and praying on her own over her failed marriage before she sought spiritual help in the church.</p> <p>“The woman’s daughter said she was in the habit of running from pillar to post in search of spiritual help so that her husband, who had abandoned her and her daughter for seven years, could return,” the source said.</p> <p>When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the circumstances surrounding Owoyele’s death were sudden and unnatural, adding that investigation was still ongoing.</p> <p>Adejobi stated, “On Saturday, April 24, 2021, around 11.50am, one Alfred Sunday reported that one Joy Owoyele, 30, came to his church, CAC Ori-Oke Gbogunmi, aka Ajanpelebe Mountain, in Isheri Olofin, for prayers on April 14, 2021.</p> <p>“Around 7am on the day of the incident, Owoyele fainted and was rushed to the Igando General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.</p> <p>“Detectives led by Inspector Bridget Edosa visited the scene, inspected the corpse and deposited it in the Yaba General Hospital morgue for autopsy. The case is under investigation.”</p>

She was handed over to the Social Welfare. There were irregularities and lies in the account of her life she gave.</p> <p>“It was discovered that contrary to her claim that her parents died during an accident that left her amputated, it was discovered that her father is very much alive and that she was amputated from birth.</p> <p>“It was also discovered that her presence in Oshodi was staged. Those working with her played on the intelligence of Nigerians to get donations for her.</p> <p>” It came to light when the people started threatening her. She promised some N500,000 others different amounts and was planning to return to her home state when the information leaked.</p> <p>“I had to attach some policemen to her to prevent any attack on her when she went to the bank. We suspected those people might follow her but everything went well as they were not seen.</p> <p>“Presently, the state government is preventing her from accessing the money.</p> <p>“The government does not want a situation where it will become a trend for people to cook up stories, manipulate the people to get donations,” Odumosu explained.</p>
