Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Saturday said that he has no godfather.
Makinde made this declaration while speaking in Ibadan, the state capital.
Recall that Makinde in 2019 won the gubernatorial election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The election was won after a coalition was formed with some political parties who jettisoned their ambitions and supported Makinde.

It was gathered that a former Governor of the state, Senator Rasidi Ladoja had in 2019, prevailed on candidates of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) Senator Olufemi Lanlehin and candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to support Makinde who later defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Makinde has, however, insisted on Saturday that he has no godfather.
He said that he has God and people of the state as his backbone.
Makinde spoke on Saturday during a program on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).
He said, “I have no godfather. God is the father. This is a government voted by the people of the state.
“They are the ones that voted us. We will not disappoint them.
“But I can prostrate for anyone. I can prostrate for anyone to ensure that we have peace in the state.
“Some people think what will make them govern Oyo State is to cause problems but I have news for them. You have to have a state before you can govern. So, if you destroy the state, what will you govern?”.

Ogenyi Onazi has signed for Lithuanian A Lyga champions, Zalgiris.
The Nigerian midfielder has been a free agent since January 5, when he left Danish Super Liga club SonderjyskE by mutual agreement, after he was restricted to just two league matches in six months.
Before the completion of the deal, Onazi has been on a personal training programme which he regularly shared on social media.
His arrival in Lithuania is expected to boost Zalgiris, who won their eight top-flight title last November.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Saturday declared that herdsmen were not responsible for the killing of Dr. Fatai Aborode.
Recall that Aborode, a former House of Representatives candidate, was last year killed in Iganga, a town in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state by yet to be identified persons.
The killing and other killings, kidnapping and attacks in Ibarapa geopolitical zone have been attributed to suspected herdsmen.
Though, many people believed that the PDP chieftain was killed by suspected herdsmen, Makinde, however, said that that herdsmen were not responsible for the killing.

Makinde who spoke on Saturday morning during a program on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) said “Aborode’s killing is political.”
Makinde who noted that his interaction with the father of the deceased, insisted that the killing is “political”.
Makinde claimed he spent a night in Ibarapa geopolitical zone recently, adding that he interacted with the father of the deceased, who revealed that the death of his son was political.
He added that all the people involved in the killing would be investigated.
Makinde said, “I was the coordinator for PDP in Ibadan North East when Dr. Aborode was the coordinator for PDP in Ibarapa North Local government area when we returned to PDP.
“Dr. Aborode is not someone who is far from me. I am not saying that there are no bad eggs among the Fulani herdsmen, but, they are not the ones responsible for the killing.
“I spent two days in Ibarapa and I interacted with the people. I spoke with the father.
“I asked him what happened. They told me that, Dr. Aborode was not the one that drove himself to the farm. He was carried on the motorcycle when they were going. He sat at the back. But when they were coming, it was another person. I asked where is the person that drove the motorcycle, they said that he came to the house to seek help.
“They told me that some people who saw them during the interaction said that those people are not Fulani. They were speaking Yoruba.
“The father told me that the death was political. And I called the Commissioner of Police.
“I asked after the motorcyclist that carried him. They said that they did not injure him. He came home to seek help. And a few days ago, they said that they have brought the person. All of them must be investigated”.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Saturday, said that the Federal Government won’t pay ransom to secure the release of the abducted students and members of staff of Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State.
The Information Minister made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’.
Mohammed said that the Federal Government was only out to employ kinetic and non-kinetic (measures) to secure the release of the kidnapped victims.
He further revealed that the government won’t tolerate any form of criminality in the country.

“Bandits all over the world work with the psychology of people. Deliberately, they target women and children because this is what will attract a lot of global outcries.‌
“Criminality in any form will not be tolerated by the government. At the same time, the government has a duty to look at the underlining causes of some of these criminalities in order to address them.
“Also, the government won’t be paying ransom to secure their release. All I can tell you is that, as at today, the government is on top of the matter. We are mapping out other roots that can be used to ensure they come back safely,” he said.

Moscow announced Saturday it had registered its third vaccine against the coronavirus and promised to introduce the jab to the Russian population by March.
Russia was the first country to register a vaccine against Covid-19 in August ahead of clinical trials, and the Sputnik V jab has been authorised in more than two dozen countries around the world.
“Today we note that a third vaccine, CoviVac, has been registered,” Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a government meeting broadcast on state television.
“And already in mid-March, the first 120,000 doses will be distributed within the civilian circulation,” he told the cabinet.

First greeted with scepticism, the effectiveness of Sputnik V was confirmed by the Lancet medical journal earlier this month.
Moscow relied on the nationwide rollout of the vaccine to stave off the impact of a second wave of infections that battered the country late last year.
But mortality data released recently revealed that Russia’s death rate was still one of the highest in the world.
President Vladimir Putin announced in October that the country had registered its second vaccine, EpiVacCorona, which health officials had said would enter mass production this month.
Mishustin said Saturday that Russia had produced 10 million doses of Sputnik and 80,000 batches of the EpiVacCorona vaccine developed by the Siberian Vektor laboratory.
With the introduction of the third jab Saturday, the prime minister said that: “Today Russia is the only country in which there are already three vaccines for the prevention of Covid infection.”
CoviVac was produced by the state-run Chumakov Centre based in Moscow, which employed a different method of development from Sputnik and EpiVacCorona, using an inactive virus.
The vaccine is due to complete final stage clinical trial with 3,000 participants in March and has so far been recommended for people below the age of 60.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, has ruled Thiago Silva out of their Premier League clash at Southampton on Saturday.
However, Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz could both play a part this weekend.
Silva, 36, had missed the Blues’ last three games due to a muscle injury and while the veteran defender trained on Thursday, he is yet to return to full fitness and will not travel for the match.
Havertz picked up a knock ahead of Chelsea’s win at Tottenham earlier this month and has managed just two appearances under Tuchel as a result.

But the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has been passed fit after returning to full training.
There remains a “big question mark” over Christian Pulisic’s availability, with the American forward nursing a minor calf problem.
“We’re very happy that Tammy is very, very good,” Tuchel told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
“Thiago will be out of the game, he’s not ready for the game.
“And we have some issues with the calf of Christian Pulisic. It’s nothing big, just feels tight and a bit sore is how I understood it yesterday so there’s a big question mark for Christian.
“Kai Havertz is back in training and can join us in Southampton.”

Lagos State Police operatives in Ejigbo Division have arrested four suspects that allegedly gang raped one teenager.
The mother of the victim, Tawa Abbey, of No 200, Mafo Bus Stop, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, reported the incident to the police.
Abbey said her daughter (name withheld) went to buy food at Lafenwa Street, Ejigbo, when a group of boys accosted her with dangerous weapons and threatened to kill her.
They forcefully had carnal knowledge of the teenager in a room at No 33, Alhaji Obe Street, Ejigbo.

The suspects are Jimoh Kamoru (16), Lukman Basit (16), Sunday Aleshinloye (16) and Ifeoluwa Alabi.
Items recovered from them included cutlasses and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered the Divisional Police Officers to rid their areas of criminals.
He directed that the Ejigbo matter be transferred to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti in Yaba, for investigation and prosecution.

More details have emerged in the fraud case against Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abbas, who is popularly known as Hushpuppi.
Last July, Hushpuppi was charged by the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles with conspiring to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from ‘’business email compromise”’ (BEC) frauds and other scams.
However, on Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) claimed he worked with North Korean hackers to launder funds stolen from a Maltese bank.
In a statement released by the DoJ, it was claimed that Hushpuppi took part in a “North Korean-perpetrated cyber-enabled heist from a Maltese bank in February 2019.”

In a July statement, the DoJ referred to the attack as “a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution.”
Both the date and amount match that of the attack on Malta’s Bank of Valletta in February 2019.
In July, Abbas’ then lawyer, Gal Pissetzky told Forbes that Abbas was not guilty of the charges and described him as “an entrepreneur” who made his money legitimately through “real estate” and his work “promoting brands” as an “Instagram personality.”

Asked if he agrees with the impression that he is a womaniser, Flavour said, “That’s people judging (me), you know. As long as you are in the public eye, you would get stuff like that. It was never planned, though I cannot deny that I love beautiful women. I am an African man, not a white man. I have taste too with women. I don’t just go with anything.”
The father of three noted that he had always known it would be difficult dealing with women because of his career. He said, “I knew that with my job at some point, it was going to be very difficult with women.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed 662 fresh cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of recorded infection in the country to 150,246.
The public health agency made the announcement on Friday night while giving an update on its official website.
According to the new figure published on its website, the country has also recorded 10 new fatalities due to COVID-19 complications. Total number of deaths has risen to 1,813.
The agency also announced 677 community recoveries in Lagos, Kaduna and Imo States. So far, no fewer than 127,500 patients have been successfully treated and recovered from the dreaded virus.

The Chairman, Abia PDP Media Support Group (AMSG), Chief Emmanuel Nwaeze has described the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State as a party of deceivers and desperate liars who have nothing good to offer the state, but to blindfold Abians and lead them back into the hands of those who want nothing good to come to Abia.
He stated this at an interactive session with journalists in Umuahia, the state capital.
He said that top notchers of the party were the architects of the problems the state is undergoing in all spheres of development because they derailed the state while in government.
“We cannot be fooled by the Wolf cries from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia. It is total white noise, shrill and frankly annoying from a team, who claimed to have a panacea to Abia ills.

“The APC is not fooling anybody this time. All the clamour to blame and damage the reputation of the incumbent governor of gross mismanagement is a hoax to hoodwink the Abia electorate, while the APC bigwigs study insights into further mismanaging and menacing the Abia economy.
“Abians are not that gullible. We cant forget that the APC echelon in Abia is populated by those who know how to chop public funds.”
He said that the APC administration is not prudent in managing resources, noting that the party is faced with different crises at the national level and in many states it governs.
He said that Abians have berated members of the APC for supposedly sticking to its lies and empty promises, while stating that PDP is the only party that can Satisfy the yearning of Abians for good governance.
Nwaeze stated that the PDP-led administration is working so hard in Abia State in the areas of infrastructural development, rehabilitation and building of new roads as well as providing the people with dividends of democracy.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for fulfilling his campaign promises with the massive road constructions he is doing in so many deplorable roads in Aba and other parts of the states, noting that posterity would remember him for his giant strides.

Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, has said Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder can still be the “right” fight.
However, Hearn admits the bout will not happen until at least, 2022.
Joshua had been frustrated in his bid to agree a deal with Wilder.
Any lingering hopes of a bout appeared to be ended when Wilder’s WBC belt was ripped away by Tyson Fury last year.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has insisted that the Nigerian constitution allows every citizen to reside in any part of the country, adding that Nigerians do not need to seek permission from any authority to dwell in any state.
Recall that following the recent crisis between herders and residents of some parts of the South-west, Governor Akeredolu of Ondo State had ordered all herdsmen to vacate the state’s forest reserves or register with the state government.
But tge Bauchi State Governor while speaking on Channels Television’s programme, ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Friday, claimed that those who choose to live in the forest have the backing of the law.
He said, “Land is in the hands of the state and federal governments in trust but Nigerians don’t need the permission of governors or the federal government to settle anywhere. You don’t need the permission of the governor of Bauchi or the governor of Ondo to be in the forests of Ondo if you choose to live in the forests because under Section 41 of the constitution, you are free to settle anywhere.”

While speaking on self-protection, the governor who recently said that herders have the right to bear AK-47 rifle, said, “when we mention AK-47, it is a figure of speech, the issue is protection, self-help, you must protect yourself.
“The Fulani man is so exposed, dehumanised and demonised. He is being seen as a bandit and so anywhere he goes, his commonwealth which I call his cows are being taken and rustled and sometimes they are fined beyond your imagination and then he has no option than to protect himself,” the governor added.

A security expert and risk consultant, Mr. Onyekachi Adekoya has revealed that the emergence of Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho to tackle the current security situation in the South-West is as a result government failure.
He also added that the recent comment by Major General Bashir Magaji (rtd.) the country’s Minister of Defence, on the Kagara school abduction, that every Nigerian should defend themselves has further justified Igboho’s actions.
Speaking Friday morning on a radio current affairs programme in Osogbo, Mr. Adekoya noted that there was a need to rejig the nation’s security architecture and allow for the creation of state police.
According to him, “the federal police has been overburdened and the policing structure has failed. The governors must have a say in the security situation in their states.

“Community policing is the way forward and the solution is a decentralised police if not self-help will become the norm in the country with regards to the comment of the Minister of Defence.”
While observing that most local government chairmen don’t reside in their domain but at the capital of their various states, he maintained that there was need to hold the local government chairmen, the state governors and the president responsible in order to put them in check.
The security expert who disclosed that the problem of security has proved too difficult for the nation to handle charged the governors to rise up to the occasion as every state in the federation is facing one form of challenge or the other. He also added that the macro economic conditions may be responsible for the trend.
He explained that due to security challenges and the ongoing operations in the North East and North West, much pressure has been put on the terrorists and bandits, yet the military has been overwhelmed.
“These ongoing operations has now enabled the creation of terrorists cells in several parts of the country who have now turned it into a commercial venture.
“Kidnapping is becoming a lucrative business and banditry is a hydra headed problem in Nigeria now.”
He accused politicians of being the problem in the country and charged Nigerians to hold them accountable for the reckless words they utter.
On the herders crisis, Adekoya opined that it is not an expansionist or socioeconomic problem.
“Some persons are the ones sowing the seeds of discord. This crisis is not an expansionist problem. The herders are also victims of political manipulations,” he added.

A physician, Dr. Olakunle Omotemi has revealed that the sudden resurgence of harmattan especially in Osun State could be a sign post for increased positive cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.
The physician, who made this revelation in a chat with newsmen, also explained that it has been backed up by research that COVID-19 thrives more in cold weather situations.
According to him, Nigerians must take every precautionary action to shield themselves from getting infected as there is a tendency for a spike in the number of positive cases.
He, however, stated that this could be prevented if citizens adhered to the COVID-19 guidelines as already laid down by the Federal Government.

“Some of the provisions in the guidelines is the wearing of facemasks in public, washing of hands with running water and the use of alcohol based hand sanitisers.
“Also, Nigerians should learn to keep some level of distance and when the need arises, stay indoors and work from home,” he said.
Dr. Omotemi advised anybody who has symptoms associated with COVID-19 to self isolate for the required number of days and in emergency cases visit the government designated health facility.
While noting that the onset of harmattan could be a factor for other ailments to arise, he counselled nursing mothers to take extra care of their infant babies so as to prevent an outbreak of opportunistic infections.
The medical practitioner also expressed delight that the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had approved the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for Nigeria, a decision which he termed as good development for the country.
He maintained that the decision to choose AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was not just arrived at but it was a painstaking one reached after exhaustive research and investigation must have been carried out.
It would be recalled that residents of most towns in Osun woke up yesterday to a resurgence of harmattan and hazy weather.

The federal government and state governors have agreed to join efforts for the immediate investigation, arrest, and prosecution of all perpetrators of crime in Nigeria.
They also promised to ensure the full protection of all Nigerians wherever they reside, without regard to ethnic, religious, or regional status.
These were part of the accord reached on Thursday at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on the security situation in the country.
Chaired by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, the council endorsed a number of resolutions.

The governors reaffirmed their commitment to national unity and pledge to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of crime.
NEC agreed on the protection of all residents of all States, including non-indigenous communities and religious and ethnic minorities within State jurisdictions.
There will be reconstruction of destroyed homes and payment of compensation by State authorities for damage to property and livelihoods sustained during targeted attacks on communities.
Deceased victims of such violence will be duly accorded dignified burial rites.
There will be immediate public condemnation of all manifestations of hatred, targeted violence, and other hate crimes against ethnic, religious, and minority groups.
NEC agreed to ensure that local security initiatives – state government law enforcement agencies, local vigilante groups or the Police community programmes – will have adequate representation of non-indigenous/minority resident communities.
The leaders promised to ensure that innocent citizens and communities are not slandered, harassed, or victimized for the crimes perpetrated by criminal elements within those communities.
Furthermore, governors will organize town hall meetings in areas where ethnic strife have been recorded.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared an “immediate industrial action” in some states that have failed to pay the N30, 000 new national minimum wage.
NLC lamented that about half the states in the country were yet to conclude negotiations on payment of the minimum wage.
The Congress’s directive was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Council, NEC, and was jointly signed by the NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba and General Secretary, Mr Emma Ugboaja.
NLC insisted that the refusal of states to pay the minimum wage was an act of criminality, and a betrayal of their oath of office.

“The NEC also resolved to view the refusal to pay the new national minimum wage by state governments as demanded by the law as an act of criminality, betrayal of the oath of office sworn by state chief executives and a dangerous adventure in anarchy.
“The NEC-in-Session directed all states where the national minimum wage of N30,000 is yet to be paid to immediately proceed on industrial action,” it said.

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has ordered the arrest of cattle found loitering the streets of Akure.
Akeredolu said the order was to reiterate his administration’s resolve to ban open grazing in the State.
The Governor disclosed this in a chat with TVC.
”We are banning open grazing. If I see a cow I will arrest it. They can’t move in Akure town. We wouldn’t allow it. It is not going to happen. We must put an end to it,” he said.
The governor’s decision followed recent criminal activities linked to herdsmen in the State.

Recently, suspected Fulani herdsmen had killed a cousin to one of the Media Aides to Akeredolu.
The deceased identified as Dayo Ibiye was killed in Ajowa community in Akoko North West Local Area of the State.
Ibiye, who was a farmer and cousin to the Senior Special Assistant to Akeredolu on New Media, Gani Muhammed-Ajowa, was killed in his farm in Ajowa community.
The incident occured about 24 hours after a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, was also killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen in Iju Community, Akure North Local Government Area of the State.

Chief Edwin Clark, South-South Leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has accused popular Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of envy and mischief.
Clark was reacting to Gumi’s call that the federal government should grant amnesty to bandits as it did to Niger Delta militants.
Gumi had said the federal government should grant Amnesty to bandits rather than engage them in what he termed “operation fire-for-fire.”
The Islamic scholar said granting amnesty to bandits would help calm down the tensed situation.

However, the former Federal Commissioner for Information said equating Niger Delta militants’ amnesty to banditry in the North is a criminal act.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Abuja, the elder statesman, however, pointed out that persuading bandits to lay down their arms and stop attacking innocent Nigerians was the right step to take.
He said:” The attempt to equate the Niger Delta Amnesty with the northern bandits is not only criminal but unconscionable.
“Sheikh Abubakar Gumi and his cohorts, who are quite many among the Fulanis, seem to be ignorant and envious of the Amnesty granted by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, in August, 2009, and which was opened for embracing until 4th October 2009, by the then Niger Delta agitators.
“The case of the Niger Delta agitators, is quite different from the case of these murderous, bloodthirsty villains, who have taken up arms against the state, using different names, whether as Boko Haram, bandits, killer herdsmen, kidnappers, etc. What is it they are demanding?”

Forum of Akwa Ibom repentant militants have told the Federal Government not to play politics with the Presidential Amnesty programme.
They said government should instead fund it to enable its leadership implement the rehabilitation, reintegration and existing phases of the programme.
They threatened to return to the creeks if the FG failed to fund the PAP, as well as implement other parts of the bargain.
In a press statement on Wednesday, signed by the Chairman and the Secretary of the Akwa Ibom Phase 11 Ex-Militants, Comrade Imoh Okoko and Mr. Sunny Affiah, respectively, the forum said the FG had not paid stipends and school fees to ex-agitators in vocational training centres within and outside the country for sometime now.

The statement added, ”It is a well known fact that the peace enjoyed in the Niger Delta today depends on the sustenance of the Presidential Amnesty programme.
”It is on record that almost all Akwa Ibom ex-militants have not been trained both in schools, vocational training centres and even till now the office is unable to pay ex-militants’ allowances and contractors due to improper funding of the Presidential Amnesty Programme”.
They, however, lauded the Interim Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Effiong Akwa for his efforts in sustaining peace in the region, but noted that his efforts could be counter productive if the PAP is not well funded to meet its obligations.
According to them, ”he may not be able to perform creditably due to the inadequate funding of the amnesty office. And this may adversely affect his lofty programmes and could lead to incessant protests, harassment of the leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Office and possible loss of confidence in the amnesty deal and subsequent return of the ex-agitators to the creeks.
”The Forum, therefore, unanimously call on the President and other relevant authorities not to play politics with the Amnesty programme but to adequately fund it to enable its leadership implement the rehabilitation, reintegration and existing phases of the programme successfully, as well as pay contractors handling various projects in the region in order to sustain the fragile peace in the Niger Delta today.”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has approved Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for use in Nigeria.
NAFDAC Director-General, Dr. Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this while briefing journalists on Thursday, in Abuja.
She said that the vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8-degree centigrade.
AstraZeneca vaccine was recently approved by the World Health Organisation, WHO.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, also known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, or AZD1222, is a viral vector vaccine.
However, the NAFDAC boss said the body got the dossier of the vaccine a week ago and its safety committee went to work immediately to evaluate its safety and efficacy for Nigerians.
She said there are three additional vaccines undergoing evaluation, but the evaluation on Astrazeneca shows that the vaccine is effective against the UK variant of the virus which has been reported in Nigeria.
Dr Adeyeye disclosed that the South African variant has not been reported in Nigeria, adding that the agency has over 30 herbal medicine undergoing review for listing.

Former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has met Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
Senator Kalu arrived Port Harcourt around 9pm on Wednesday to the reception of Governor Wike.
This is Kalu’s first visit to the Rivers State Government House since he left as Governor in 2007.
The nocturnal meeting between Governor Wike and Senator Kalu held behind closed doors with few leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.

Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, was furious after he was denied a late penalty in the final moments of his side’s 2-1 defeat against Porto in the Champions League last 16 first-leg tie in Portugal on Wednesday night.
Porto defeated Juventus, thanks to two goals from Mehdi Taremi and Moussa Marega.
Federico Chiesa did score a late goal for Andrea Pirlo’s side.
However, just before the final whistle of the match between Porto and Juventus, Ronaldo brought down the ball in the box and then flicked it backwards before colliding with Nigerian defender, Zaidu Sanusi.
The 36-year-old went to ground and immediately appealed for a penalty, but the referee refused to point to the spot before blowing for full-time.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, met behind closed doors with Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger, at the State House, Abuja.
NAN gathered that the governor was in the State House to update the President on the security situation in his State where some staff and students of Government Science Secondary School (GSSS), Kagara, Rafi council area of the State were abducted by gunmen on Wednesday morning
Recall that Buhari had earlier condemned the abduction and dispatched a team of top security officials to the State to coordinate the rescue operation in the State.
He vowed not to relent until normalcy is restored in the security situation in the country.

Speaking after the meeting, Gov. Bello thanked President Buhari for swiftly ordering actions on the GSSS Kagara school kidnap.
He told state reporters, “I came in this evening to thank Mr President for his quick response to the plight of Nigerlites, following two serious kidnap incidences.
“At the same time we rubbed minds on what we think should be done so that we find an everlasting solution to the situation and Mr President has confirmed to me that this matter will be given proper attention.”
“We’ll continue engaging the service chiefs and the federal so that we can guide and advice them on what we think should be done. So I think it was a wonderful meeting,’’ he said
He also expressed support for the call by the nation’s Upper Chamber for the declaration of a state of emergency on security in the country.
Bello said the call had become imperative so as to address security challenges being experienced in some parts of the country.
“At the moment, if you look at what is happening, we are having security challenges in almost all parts of the country, so yes there’s a need to install some form of emergency on security matters across board.
“So yes, I think the Senate acted in good faith. Something definitely needs to be done,” he said.
He added that he was convinced by what Buhari told him and he had also requested for additional personnel and equipment.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed 869 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Nigeria.
This brings the total number of recorded infections in the country since February 2020 to 149,369.
The health agency made the confirmation on Wednesday night while giving an update on fresh cases via its official website.
According to the new report, the country also recorded 10 fatalities due to COVID-19 complications; the figure brings the total number of deaths so far, to 1,787.

Niger State government has released names of the students and teachers of Government Science College, Kagara abducted by gunmen.
It was reported that no fewer than 27 students of Government Science College Kagara, 3 teachers, two non teaching staff and 9 family members of the staff staying in the quarters were kidnapped on Wednesday morning.
The names of the abducted students are: Jamilu Isah, Shem Joshua, Abbas Abdullahi, Isah Abdullahi, Ezekeil Danladi, Haliru Shuibu, Mamuda Suleman, Danzakar Dauda, Abdulsamad Sanusi, Bashir Abbas.
Others are Suleman Lawal, Habakuk Augustine, Idris Mohammed, Abdullahi Adamu, Musa Adamu, Abdulkarim Abdulrahman, Abubakar Danjumma, Abdullahi Abubakar, Bashir Kamalideen, Mohammed Salisu, Yusuf M Kabir, Polineous Vicente, Lawal Bello, Mohammed K Shehu, Isah Abdullah Makusidi, Mubarak Sidi and Abdulsamad Nuhu.

The identity of abducted teachers are: Hannatu Philip, Lawal Abdullahi and Dodo Fodio while the non teaching staff are Faiza Mohammed and Mohammed Musa.
The names of abducted family members include: Christiana Adama, Faith Adama, Maimuna Suleman, Nura Isah, Ahmad Isah, Mohammed Mohammed, Khadizat Isah, Aisha Isah and Saratu Isah.
The student who was shot to death by the bandits in the school premises was identified as Benjamin Habila.

Maj. General Bashir Salihi Magashi, Nigeria’s defence minister has come under fussilade after his gaffe that Nigerians should defend themselves when attacked by bandits.

Henry is currently in charge of Montreal in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Details of the PDP closed-door reconciliation meeting between former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former governors of the party and Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has emerged.
Saraki, on Wednesday, met with former governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the platform began lobbying for 2023.
Saraki, a former Kwara Governor, chaired the PDP Reconciliation and Strategy Committee.
The chieftain said all in attendance agreed to work together ahead of the general elections.

“They are still leaders in their states. There is no way we’ll talk about reconciliation and unity without consulting them.
“We’ve been here for two, three hours…very useful and productive meeting.

“It was also to bring about all the areas of grievances, which is normal in any party, to help us unify and bring people together.”

Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen has come under fire for taking pictures with Juventus’ legendary duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gigi Buffon after Napoli’s 1-0 win over the Italian giants on Saturday.
Italian football pundit Umberto Chiariello could not hide his disappointment with the behaviour of the Nigerian international
Osimhen had after the match gone to the Old Lady dressing room to take pictures with Ronaldo and Buffon.

The federal government says measures are in place to ensure the safe release of abducted students and staff of Government Science College Kagara in Niger State.
Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, stated this on Tuesday during a meeting of federal officials with Governor Sani Bello.
He assured that Nigeria will not surrender its sovereignty to criminals.
National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno said both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches would be used to secure the release of the staff and students.

Mary Noel-Berje, Bello’s spokesperson, quoted him as saying there will be both political and military efforts to resolve the issue.
The NSA added that President Muhammadu Buhari was determined to apply whatever it takes to ensure the safety of lives and property in the country.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu said strategies have been put in place to deal with the situation.
Adamu said the Police is working with other security agencies to ensure that the kidnapped students and others abducted along Zungeru-Kontagora road are freed unharmed.
He disclosed that the police has deployed four units of Mobile Police Force men to swing into action with the Department of State Services (DSS) to reinforce security.
Bello, in his remarks, expressed delight over the prompt action by the federal government.
Also on the delegation were the Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola and the Minister for Police Affairsr, Mohammed Dingydi.

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas recovered from two sets down to stun Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Wednesday, ending the Spaniard’s bid for a record 21st Grand Slam title.
Second seed Nadal was on course for a comfortable victory before Tsitsipas turned the match around to prevail 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5 in a seismic upset.
“I don’t know what happened after the third set — I fly like little bird, everything was working for me,” said Tsitsipas, who hit 49 winners and 17 aces.
“The emotions at the end were indescribable, they were something else.”

The 22-year-old credited a composed temperament for his turnaround.
“I was able to be consistent with my mood and be calm in the crucial moments,” he said.
“I’ve been trying to keep everything to myself and I’m happy with my attitude I showed on the court.”
It was just the second time Nadal had lost when two sets up in a Grand Slam, having previously fallen to Fabio Fognini in the third round of the 2015 US Open.
Nadal, 34, remains tied with Roger Federer on 20 Grand Slam titles, but Novak Djokovic can pull within two if he wins his 18th major trophy at Melbourne Park.
Fifth seed Tsitsipas will now attempt to reach a maiden Grand Slam final when he plays the in-form Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final.
“He’s playing very well and is in good shape. I know he is going to give me a difficult time on the court,” said Tsitsipas, who has a 1-5 record against the Russian.
“I need to recover and do a nice ice bath.”
He beat Nadal for just the second time in eight matches. Djokovic will play the other semi-final against Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev.
Nadal, sweating profusely in the muggy conditions, was in vintage form until a nerveless Tsitsipas turned the match on its head after snatching the tiebreak in the third set.
The momentum shifted towards Tsitsipas in the fourth set and he finally cracked Nadal’s serve to force a deciding set.
Both players served well under pressure in a tense fifth set before Tsitsipas gained the pivotal break in the 11th game and then clinched his memorable victory with a backhand winner down the line.
That drama had appeared unlikely when an aggressive Nadal cruised through the opening two sets, toying with Tsitsipas and moving him around the court.
Tsitsipas, however, hung in there to force a third set tiebreak, where Nadal’s loose play ultimately proved fatal.
Nadal was hoping to end a 12-year drought at the Australian Open, the only Slam he has not won multiple times.

A woman has killed her husband in Ondo State over suspicions of infidelity.
The man was killed after his wife allegedly received a call from another lady.
The suspect identified as Queen Beatrice was said to have hit her husband, Emmanuel Ikujuni with a plank during an argument over the call.
The incident happened at the Omotosho axis of Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

According to sources, the woman had flared up after the deceased received a call from the lady whom she suspected to be her husband’s girlfriend.
Following the ensuing arguments, the couple engaged in a fight during which Beatrice picked up a plank and hit her husband on the head.
The sources added that the husband was rushed to a nearby hospital by neighbours but died before he could be admitted.
Narrating the incident, a sister to the deceased, Imoleayo Ikujuni said: “During the fight, she hit him with a plank and he died instantly.”
She also disclosed that Beatrice who was arrested after the incident had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, in Akure, the state capital.
Meanwhile, his corpse has been deposited at the morgue while awaiting an autopsy.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Tee-Leo Ikoro, said investigations have commenced.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has called on the federal government to ensure the immediate and safe return of all students abducted at the Government Science College (GSC) Kagara, in Niger State.
Recall that gunmen on Wednesday morning stormed the school in military uniform and kidnapped scores of students.
Atiku, reacting to the incident on Twitter asked that no resources be spared in ensuring the safe return of the kidnapped victims.
He also assured the affected families that his thoughts and prayers were with them.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the kidnapped students and staff of Government Science College, Kagara in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq., National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, has vowed to lead a massive protest against President Muhammadu Buhari’s government over ethnic clashes and insecurity in the country.
Bamgbose said that the failure of president Buhari, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to address the nation on these pressing issues across the nation is highly disturbing.
The senior lawyer explained that the cordial relationship that has existed between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups, especially the Fulani and the Hausa, for donkey years, have now been shattered, alluding to the recent clashes in Oyo State.
“The painful thing about the ugly scenario is that our President has blatantly refused to constructively come up with ways to prevent the looming disaster,” Bamgbose said while addressing a press conference in Abeokuta.

According to him, it is very sad that the Yoruba now see the Fulani as enemies and vice-versa adding that this is purely a wrong notion.
“This conflict is like an ill-wind that will blow no one any good. I’m very much concerned about the innocent Northerners affected by these clashes.
“I’ll also commend the Governors who came from the North to visit Governor Makinde on the issue of Shasha market. Dialogue remains the best way to resolve any conflict.
“No one is in doubt that we have bad eggs among the Fulani herdsmen, but there should be a way to deal with them and spare the innocent ones of the pains they are passing through.
“After considering this ugly trend, I’ve decided to inform our President to address the nation or get prepared to order my arrest for leading a peaceful protest.
“Whether Fulani or Yorubas or Igbos, we are Nigerians. Lives must be protected at all cost. I won’t sit in the comfort of my house and watch Nigerians being turned against themselves.
“I will soon lead a protest if Buhari won’t address this security issue. Enough is enough. The time to ACT has come,” Bamgbose, a 2023 presidential hopeful said.

Arsenal has been handed a significant injury boost ahead of their Europa League round of 32 clash with Benfica at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Thursday.
Arsenal defender, Kieran Tierney, who didn’t take part in the club’s Premier League 4-2 victory over Leeds United on Sunday due to injury, returned to the Gunners’ training on Tuesday ahead of their clash with Benfica.
Tierney missed the last month encounter due to leg injury, but the club disclosed his return in a tweet posted on Tuesday.
A video of a small-sided game showed the Scottish international in action, and the 23-year-old curled home a fine goal to show that he could well be over the worst of his injury.

Providing an update on Tierney, Arteta told a post-match press conference after Arsenal defeated Leeds last weekend, “It seems unlikely at the moment, but I don’t know.
“Probably if there is one player who has got a bigger chance, it’s Kieran (Tierney).
“Probably in the next few days, he can start to do some parts with the team.”
“It seems unlikely (on Partey) at the moment,” he said.

Senator representing Niger South Senatorial district, Birma Enagi, has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is incompetent. He also said that the government has disappointed the citizens over poor handling of security matters.
The lawmaker’s outburst followed a motion by his colleague on the reported abduction of Government Science Secondary School students, Kagara in Niger State on Wednesday morning.
Senator Mohammed Sani Musa representing Niger East Senatorial district rose under order 42 and 52, disclosing that an unspecified number of school students with their teachers have been abducted.
But lamenting the incessant abductions in Niger State, Enagi suggested if the law would be amended to allow citizens carry arms for self-defense, explaining that security agents have failed.

He said: “I’m sorry to say this, the government is grossly incompetent in the handling of security challenges in this country.
“In my own zone, a few days ago, terrorists went to two local governments, but fortunately, my people were able to repel and killed 9 of them and in short, everybody that is here has a story to tell about security challenges in this country.
“What else are we supposed to do that we are not doing? Are we supposed to amend laws in this country to give every citizen the opportunity to carry arms? What else are we supposed to do?
Are we going to amend Nigeria Constitution to give more powers to the governors who are the Chief Security Officers of their various States because, our government at the centre is so incompetent in the handing of security issues.
“Imagine if it is one of us that his or her daughter and son were kidnapped. I expect everyone in government to think like that.
“For over two years, our police and other security agents have been trying and for over two years, we have been discussing security challenges that we are facing, yet nothing has improved.
“We have a lot of youths who are graduates that are not employed or under employed. What are we doing? The government is busy distributing palliatives instead of creating economic activities that will engage the unemployed; that will generate employment; that will improve the welfare of our people.
“Mr. President, my highly respected distinguished colleagues, the situation in this country is disheartening and something needs to be done.”

Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has identified Edouard Mendy as a better goalkeeper for Chelsea ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Carragher disclosed this on Monday as Kepa started ahead of Mendy in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.
Kepa, who Chelsea signed for £72million in 2018 from Athletic Bilbao, has played second fiddle to the Blues’ summer signing, Mendy, for much of the season.
However, Tuchel handed Kepa his first Premier League start since last October on Monday night as Chelsea defeated Newcastle at home, thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner.

Comparing both goalkeepers, Carragher told Sky Sports: “Mendy is a better goalkeeper – we have seen that since he came in – but he’s not as good with his feet as Kepa.
“I think the manager wants to have a look, but I also think the hierarchy are asking whether Tuchel can get something out of Kepa. I don’t expect it to last too long.”
Chelsea’s next game is against Southampton on Saturday in an away Premier League tie.
