A former presidential candidate in the last general elections, Kingsley Moghalu has condemned the reported arrest of Omoyele Sowore.
It was reported that Sowore was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police on Friday morning.
He was arrested in the company of other activists against the Nigerian government.
Reacting, Moghalu asked the government to release Sowore, adding that engaging in protest is his right as a Nigerian.

On his Twitter page, Moghalu wrote: “I am deeply concerned about the reported arrest of @YeleSowore , for no apparent reason other than engaging in a public protest that is his right as a Nigerian citizen.
“Sowore is an active citizen, and Nigeria should not squash voices of dissent. I strongly demand his release.”

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday said the escape of about 2,000 prisoners from correctional centres in the state during the #EndSARS protests had compounded insecurity in the state.
He, however, said the state government was building a robust security system to deal with the situation, urging citizens and the private sector to support the government’s efforts.
Obaseki, who said this in his New Year broadcast, stated that he was emplacing deep-rooted reforms in the state to engender sustainable development and reconfigure government institutions to better serve the people.
He said, “The social and economic tension emanating from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the #EndSARS protests and its aftermath, which resulted in jailbreaks in Oko and Sapele Road, Benin City. Almost 2,000 prisoners escaped from these facilities and this has compounded the security situation in the state, which we are now dealing with.

 “We are building a robust security system to deal with the peculiar challenges that we now face. We are essentially evolving a public safety system that is anchored on citizen participation with a bottom-up structure, such that citizens are actively engaged in protecting and securing their immediate communities in collaboration with the government.”
He added that the government would be launching the operation ‘Know Your Neighbour,’ campaign, where citizens would be requested to provide information on the identities of all those who lived close to them.
He also called on the citizens to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols.
On the highpoint of the outgone year, the governor said the September 19, 2020 election was a silver lining for the state, saying, “In the midst of the gloom and despair, there was a silver lining for us in Edo State with the conduct of the September 19 governorship election, which against all predictions, turned out to be peaceful, credible and a watershed for our democracy as a nation.”

Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries, Enugu, has released his prophecies for the new year, especially about the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mbaka warned Buhari to act fast and save his government from looming extinction.
The cleric spoke during the 2020 edition of his popular annual December 31 Crossover Night tagged, ‘Cornucopia of New Miracles from God”.
Mbaka said he got a divine ministration to warn the President Muhammadu Buhari government “to be very careful,” and change its policies to accommodate the youths without politicising their condition.

“That the government should rise and urgently create jobs and innovate opportunities that would benefit the youths of the nation because they have suffered so much.
“Don’t politicise the condition of the youths, otherwise, they will arise and end the political system,” Mbaka said.
“Should the government fail to do so as soon as possible that time is coming when the youths will rise against the government, and that any attempt to stop them will end the government!” He said.
Mbaka warned that the anger of God will soon fall on the government as there may be another protest from the youths.
He said: “I can see a year ahead; it is not specific whether it is in 2021 that this will happen, but it is within a time in the time of life, that the anger of God will befall many people in the political circle because, they have looted so much and disgraced this nation enough.”
Mbaka said that those who should be working to save the country have continued to loot it dry.
The cleric pointed out that politicians in the country had for long busied themselves in “packing the nation’s commonwealth.”
Recall that the outspoken Catholic priest had recently said that God was angry at the Buhari-led government for failing to address the numerous challenges facing the country.
The fiery prophet called on Buhari to apologise to Nigerians for leadership errors of the current government and that of past governments.
Also recall that Mbaka had foretold, in one of his church programmes, that Hope Uzodinma, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2019 election in Imo State, would be declared winner of the election by the Supreme Court.
Then the Supreme court on Tuesday 19th January 2020, declared Uzodinma as the duly elected governor of Imo State.
It, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return from former Governor, Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and issue Uzodinma certificate of return as governor of the state.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said the votes due to Uzodinma and APC from 318 polling units were wrongly excluded and should be added.
Prior to the general elections in 2015, the cleric had also predicted that the incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan will lose to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has asked the military chiefs to act honourably by resigning their appointment amid the worsening insecurity if President Muhammadu Buhari refuses to sack them.
He stated further that the Buhari-led Federal Government should admit failure in the area of security, noting that governing the country and protecting lives and property is not rocket science.
In the same vein, elder statesmen, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai and Dr Junaid Mohammed, also backed Tambuwal’s position that it’s high time the military chiefs resigned.
Adebanjo argued that the President should also have resigned given the way the insecurity problem had festered under his watch.

Speaking at a webinar organised by the Emmanuel Chapel, themed, ‘Rebuilding our lives: A case for hope and determination to succeed, Tambuwal explained that it was ironical that security agencies were short of personnel even when millions of Nigerians ready to serve were roaming the streets.
The webinar was also attended by banker and former President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede; a former Vice-President of the World Bank, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili; former Emir of Kano and ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, and legal practitioner, Prof Konyinsola Ajayi (SAN).
There have been calls from different quarters, including the National Assembly, for the removal of the service chiefs, comprising the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas, given the rising insecurity in recent times.
For example, no fewer than 43 farmers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Zabarmari village in the Jere Local Government Area of Borno State on November 27.
Among several other attacks on innocent citizens in addition to kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery that have become prevalent across the country, over 300 pupils were kidnapped in Kankara, Katsina State on December 11.
Speaking on the issue of insecurity at the webinar, Tambuwal said, “As far back as June 2018, I made my opinion known about our service chiefs and the Inspector-General and I called for the rejigging of the security architecture.
“There is definitely a need for the service chiefs to go, either they are asked to go by the President who appointed them or by themselves being honourable enough to say we have done our best. It’s clear; even the Commander-in-Chief has said it not one or twice that their best is not enough.
“They should be honourable enough to say, Mr President, we have done our best, our best is not enough, you have adjudged our best not to be good enough, we take a bow, appoint a new set of people that would take charge.
“No one of us is indispensable. No single individual has the monopoly of knowledge of how to address the challenges we are facing as a nation, more so with insecurity, especially with the fact that they have been tested over the years. The same set of people and we have seen the outcome of their efforts.”
He also spoke on how the Federal Government had managed the security situation, saying leadership entails taking critical actions to address emerging challenges.
He said, “We must as a leadership admit that we are failing, and in this case, I mean the centre is failing in providing that leadership.”
Tambuwal, who is also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, explained that security agents should be equipped with the proper weapons, good remuneration, the right technology and possible collaboration with other countries.
He added, “It is not rocket science; it can be done. We need to recruit more hands and there are many patriotic Nigerians, eminently qualified, able-bodied people that are ready and willing to serve this country in our security agencies. We know Nigeria is under-policed, so what is difficult in employing more hands?”
He pointed out that there had been a cordial relationship with security agencies in the state, adding that intelligence sharing among them and the support from the state government had helped to reduce crime in the state.
He added, “They have been working together in synergy in Sokoto, unlike what is happening at the national level, and we know that there is no synergy among the heads of the security agencies. They are not working together.”
He argued that insecurity had worsened, especially in northern Nigeria, because most of the countries sharing borders with the region such as  Cameroon, Niger Republic, Chad, have “serious insecurity problems.”
Calling for the reduction in the cost of governance, he said it should be holistic and cut across all levels of government and arms of government.
Also, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Friday, Adebanjo, who is a leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, lamented the worsening insecurity in the country, while calling on the service chiefs to resign if the President is reluctant to sack them.
Adebanjo said, “There is no question about this. Even him (the President) should have left (office) too considering the state of insecurity in the country. Despite the fact that people are saying they are incompetent, he kept them there (in office).
“People who are not saying this are not saying the truth. They (service chiefs) should have resigned. They should resign. There is no improvement in security. There is evidence of failure and incompetence. People are dying every day and they keep incompetent people there (in office).”
Mohammed, who is the convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, told one of our correspondents in a telephone interview that he aligned with Tambuwal’s position.
He said, “I agree with Governor Aminu Tambuwal totally and entirely; these people should simply resign. It is clear that they have run out of ideas. Even from their manner of appointment, it is only President Muhammadu Buhari who can tell you why he appointed them and why he is keeping them because they weren’t the most qualified at the time they were appointed.
“Those who are normally consulted formally or informally before such appointments are made, groups such as the National Security Council, the Army, Navy and Air Force councils as well as the National Security Adviser among others, were not consulted.
“These groups have information about individuals being considered for such appointments that the President may not be aware of. It is evident that these appointees have nothing fresh to offer as they are clearly overwhelmed by these security challenges.”
Yakasai, who is a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, also said, “I certainly support any call that will better our security situation. We are certainly on the edge and the security of lives and property is seriously in jeopardy.
“Apart from the service chiefs who I believe are still enjoying the perks that come with their offices, the pressure should be directed at the President who has the powers to hire and fire them. It is he who has the task of sending them away.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria has suggested solutions to the rising attaks and killings by bandits in Southern Kaduna.
The Christian body called for  the creation of temporary mini barracks in the routes being used by the attackers, community policing, involvement of key stakeholders and neutrality by the government.
The Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab, who is also the association’s National Vice Chairman, covering the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, stated these in an interview with newsmen.
According to him, the government has not agreed on a sincere and true definition of the problems in Southern Kaduna.

He said, “If government thinks it has historical influence, then it should go beyond Zango Kataf (1992 and 1995) to the very first causes of the crises in Southern Kaduna. Until we deal with the root, we cannot kill the tree.
“The neutrality of government in the matter leaves a bit of doubt. Government must balance the scale. The judicial process is yet another matter. Till date, no single attacker has been successfully prosecuted, at least not to the knowledge of the larger community. Until you have justice, you cannot have peace.
“Government has been reactionary, instead of being proactive. If truly we want to end the attack, temporary mini barracks should be created in the routes that these attackers follow right in the bush. Community policing is another important issue but even when the government talks about its seriousness, the implementation is poor.
“Involving key stakeholders in the issue is wise and non-negotiable, but what is more important is involving the right stakeholders. On this too, the government has, in my opinion, been doing poorly.”

Jumoke Babalola-Oludele, a sister to one of the members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Sunkammi Babalola has been freed by her abductors.
The victim was abducted on Monday, 21st December last year.
Her brother, Sunkanmi Babalola is currently representing Egbeda State constituency.
Our correspondent recalls that three gunmen had kidnapped the victim at Monatan area of Ibadan.

She was kidnapped on Monday, while coming from her shop.
The State Police command confirmed the abduction. 
However, it was gathered that the victim has been released.
Her brother, Mr. Babalola confirmed the development on Saturday morning.
He told newsmen that no ransom was paid.
Babalola said, “I want to inform you that she has been freed.
“She regained her freedom this morning around 6am.
“But, no ransom was paid”.

A former Secretary to Oyo State government, Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli has declared that Nigerians deserve better livelihood more than the one they are currently experiencing.
Alli, who contested the gubernatorial election on the platform of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in 2019, said that citizens deserve better living conditions from the federal government headed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Alli in his New Year message made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Friday, urged state governors among whom are Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State among others to find ways of ameliorating the current hardship many Nigerians are facing.
He urged governments at all levels to renew commitment in rebuilding the country.

Alli while speaking further, urged Nigerians to be careful with the increase in the number of coronavirus as the figure in the country and Oyo State are increasing.

“There is hope for betterment of this great nation. There are potentials in Oyo State and we shall tap those potentials.

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has said his administration will ensure a robust business environment to stimulate economic growth and the creation of jobs in the state in 2021.
He said this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri.
He also reiterated his administration’s agenda towards the sustenance of peace and security, education, affordable healthcare, fixing the infrastructural deficit, driving better economic growth and social progress for the State.
He said, “Today, we express our gratitude to God and our people not only for the opportunity to serve but also for the achievements we have recorded, which now forms the foundations for our drive towards greater levels of development, economic growth, better life and secured future for our people.

“But, we also concede to the fact that there’s much more to be done to realize the Rivers State of our dreams: a progressive State with fabulous infrastructures, quality education, affordable healthcare and boundless economic opportunities for all who live in it.
“We will, therefore, continue in 2021 to focus on the fundamental task of creating a new Rivers State through prudent, efficient and transparent management of available resources.
“Essentially, we shall continue to upgrade and expand educational infrastructure and services across all levels of the education system.
“There is no better guarantee for the future progress of our State and the nation than to ensure that every child has the realistic access to the transformational light of education and skills acquisition.
“We shall also continue to prioritize healthcare delivery and ensure that everyone has access to affordable primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services.”
Wike noted that the mismanagement of the national economy, coronavirus pandemic, escalated insecurity, corruption and socio-political tensions made the year 2020 a challenging one.
He said the challenges made life horrible for millions of struggling families who had to deal with dwindling revenues, rising inflation, poverty and unemployment.
He said his administration has positioned its development agenda and efforts at building a financially responsible and socially equitable State.
“Accordingly, 2020 also proved to be a very busy and eventful year for our State, especially in project execution and delivery of social services to our people.
“As customary, we initiated and completed a record number of development projects with tremendous socioeconomic impact while several others, including the multi-billion Naira flyovers, received reasonable funding and construction attention in 2020.”
He said the Mother and Child hospital, the Real Madrid Academy new buildings, and the Okoro-Nu-Odo flyover will be inaugurated on January 4, 2021.
Others, according to him, are the Sakpewa – Bori dual carriageway, the Abonnema ring road, the 10-kilometer Bolo internal roads, and the Eteo – Sime – Nowan – Kira road.
He said, “We also wish to restate our commitment to recruiting 5000 youths into the State’s public service in 2021 to reduce the unemployment rate and give the beneficiaries a new ease of life.”
Reminding citizens that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over, WIke advised them to adhere to the existing protocols to protect themselves.
“It is necessary to remind everyone of our responsibility to adhere strictly to the existing protocols on compulsory wearing of face masks, maintenance of social distancing, avoiding large gatherings and the regular use of hand sanitizers so that we can reasonably prevent the rate of transmission and avoid needless deaths from the disease,” he said.
He expressed displeasure at the disregard for the ban on street trading, the creation of illegal motor parks, erection of illegal kiosks along the streets and other public spaces.
“Apart from constituting a public nuisance, these activities and structures obstruct traffic flow and pose serious threats to public safety and security to the extent no responsible government can tolerate.
“With the grace period over, therefore, we have no other option than to order immediate clampdown and put a final stop to these illegal operations from the 4th of January 2021,” he said.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has called on Nigerians to use the New Year to renew their commitment to collective prosperity, growth and development by contributing more to nation building.

Despite the directive by the Ondo State government banning the annual “cross over vigil”, senior pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa still went ahead to hold the programme.
At the cross over service held in his church auditorium in Akure, Giwa said only a fake Christian is afraid of death.
The state government through the Ondo State Inter-ministerial Committee on COVID-19 had threatened to jail any church leader who flouts its ban on crossover services across the state due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Giwa, while addressing his church members said it would be hard for anybody who could not die for Christ to enter the kingdom of God.

He quoted the book of Matthew 10:39 to support his argument and urged Christians to expect great tribulation any moment.
“You can only arrest me in the house of God, but you cannot arrest me in a beer parlor. What is the essence of following Jesus Christ if you cannot die for Him?
“We did our cross over service today successfully and closed at 12:35 am. I made a vow to God to gather His children to worship him.
“I fear no man, but God. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it, says Jesus’s Christ in Matthew 10:39.
“The apostles in the bible died for Christ, but most apostles of our time are afraid. When the Scripture tells you to obey a leader, it does not tell you to obey leaders who don’t have fear God,” Giwa stated.
