Ahead of Sunday’s opening of the 30th African Union Summit, President Muhammadu Buhari started his four-day engagement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Saturday by joining 14 other members of the Peace and Security Council, a standing organ of the AU for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts.<br />

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the African leaders discussed the persistence of violent conflicts and crisis situations in some parts of the continent and upsurge of Internally Displaced Persons and refugees.<br />
<br />
Shehu said the leaders also discussed climate change and its consequences as well as the issue of the derailment of national development programmes.<br />
<br />
He said, “The meeting is essentially reviewing the situations in Somalia, South Sudan, Libya, Guinea Bissau, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<br />
<br />
“It is also discussing the situation in Lake Chad Basin, the regional efforts to combat Boko Haram as well as the situation in Mali and the Sahel region which continues to be a source of deep concern despite efforts by the countries of the region and the United Nations.”<br />
<br />
He further explained that the PSC’s major duty is to “conduct early warning and preventive diplomacy, facilitate peace-making, establish peace-support operations and, in certain circumstances, recommend intervention in Member States to promote peace, security and stability.”</div>

As Nigerians and the world at large eagerly awaited this year’s Valentine’s Day, gorgeous Nollywood actress Ufedo Sunshine has rated Nigerian men extremely low on the romance scale.<br />

Speaking in an exclusive interview, the Kogi state born actress who starred along side Cossy Orjiakor, Bukky Wright, Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey in the blockbuster movie, Pure Honey, attributed the poor performance of Nigerian men on the challenges in the country.<br />

When asked, Ufedo replied, “Who dash monkey banana? Romance fire! Fuel scarcity alone won’t let Nigerian men be romantic. I will rate them 2/10 please. The thing is, Nigerian men go through a lot in this country that has left them with no room for romance. Just my thoughts though, but some of them act romantic sometimes.”<br />

On her rumoured secret marriage, the Kogi state born thespian and businesswoman has this to say;<br />

“Is this a ‘let’s hear from the horse’s mouth situation?’ Well, I’m a virgin please. Hahaha. I think relationships, marriage, civil partnership should be kept out of social media.<br />
When you post your relationship online, and something goes wrong, you come back and post what has gone wrong, explaining the situation and be making a fool out of yourself”.<br />

Regarding the notion that many celebs are now hiding their relationship status and spouses to avoid their colleagues from intruding and snatching them, Ufedo said, “I can only laugh. Anyone who allows him/herself to be snatched, was never meant for you. It’s as simple as it sounds. Anyone that does not respect and love you enough to stay away from your colleagues, does not deserve you. You can only get drowned in water when you go into it.”<br />

The actress then speaks on how and why she maintained her original skin despite bleaching being the order of the day among a large number of Nigerian celebs.<br />
<br />
“When you go black you can’t go back. Black is beautiful. Black has always been cool and black is currently being recognised even though those bleaching haven’t realised that. I am proud to be born black. I can never bleach my skin for anything in the world. I sincerely feel sorry for the bleachers, they are not aware of the danger they are causing to their skin. You can’t even sit comfortably with some, their skin stinks already from bleaching. I love my coconut oil and shea butter.”</div>

“I always believed in myself,” she said. “I knew that if I can stay healthy and I work hard, my game is good enough for it.”<br />

Her hard work was rewarded with a renaissance in 2017, reaching eight finals — winning in Tokyo and at the season-ending WTA Finals, where she banished another hoodoo by registering a first career win over Venus Williams.<br />

She continued her sparkling form at the start of this year and has 10 wins and only one defeat, to Julia Goerges in the warm-up Auckland final.<br />
<br />
The gritty Halep, 26, made her only previous Grand Slam final appearances at Roland Garros in 2014 and 2017.<br />

The Romanian has only beaten Wozniacki twice in their six previous matches, the most recent meeting ending in a 6-0, 6-2 battering by the Dane at the 2017 WTA Finals in Singapore.</div>

Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa has said that he has no plans to contest for the 2019 presidential election.<br />

Badaru also disowned and disassociated himself from a group supporting him to run for the office of President in the 2019 general elections.<br />
The governor made his position known in a statement issued on Saturday in Dutse by his media aide, Malam Bello Zaki.<br />
<br />
“The attention of the Jigawa State Government has been drawn to a mischievous paid newspaper advertisement purported to have been made by a faceless and unknown organisation called `Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar for President Support Group’, which purportedly aimed its support to the recent comments by former President Obasanjo.<br />
<br />
“The State Government hereby calls on the general public to dismiss and ignore the false and malicious advertisement and the message<br />
and evil innuendo it intends to propagate”.<br />
<br />
The governor said that he neither have nor endorsed any organisation or group for the purpose of vying for any national office.<br />
<br />
“Governor Badaru Abubakar does not have and does not endorse any<br />
organisation for the purpose of achieving or vying for any<br />
national office as he grapples with the challenges of governing his state and delivering on the mandate given to him by the Jigawa electorate.<br />
<br />
“We understand that there are persons within and outside the state<br />
that perceive the cordial and progressive relationship that exists<br />
between the Governor and the Presidency as inimical to their personal<br />
and political interests and aspirations, especially in the light of several national assignments that the Governor is successfully carrying out at the behest of the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.<br />
<br />
“We are working with the newspaper that carried the obnoxious<br />
advertising with a view to identifying the miscreants behind its publication and will use all available legal avenues to ensure that they pay for this dastardly attempt at souring the relationship between the State and the National Government,” it said.<br />
<br />
The governor, therefore, urged the general public to ignore this and any future attempt to disparage the office of the governor using cheap and unimaginative media distortion.<br />
<br />
The government also advised media organisations to place professionalism above commercial considerations.<br />
<br />
It enjoined the media to utilise industry best practice and guidelines in determining the identity of persons and entities before publishing or broadcasting political and potentially controversial contents in the interest of national peace, stability and progress. </div>

A Lagos lawmaker, Prince Adebisi Yusuff on Saturday, advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be ready to face new challenges in 2019 general elections and address them accordingly.<br />

Yusuff, representing Alimosho Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.<br />
<br />
According to him, INEC needs to foresee possible areas politicians may want to scuttle the process to prevent the exercise from being free and fair.<br />
<br />
“Efforts should be made to make the elections free and fair. INEC has to be very smart and be ahead of those who may want to cut corners.<br />
<br />
“INEC should be fair and be prepared to face new challenges. The elections will be interesting and memorable.<br />
<br />
“INEC must take into consideration the security situation now and plan adequately. It is now that INEC has to start not tomorrow.<br />
<br />
“About card readers, I don’t think there is an alternative to them, but the card readers must be updated regularly to ensure optimal performance,” he said.<br />
<br />
On the multiplication of political parties, the lawmaker said some of the newly registered parties were “dead on arrival” because they could not even produce a local government counsellor.<br />
<br />
Yusuff, who is the Chairman, Ad hoc Committee on Public Accounts (Local), expressed optimism that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would survive the current challenges facing the party.<br />
<br />
He said that the incumbent government had been doing its best to build on the achievement of the previous governments.<br />
<br />
The lawmaker said that the government had achieved a lot within three years in office.<br />
<br />
He, however, commended Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun for their achievements in the area of employment creation, agriculture and infrastructural development.<br />
<br />
Yusuff also advised politicians to shun all tendencies to resort to falsehoods, blackmails and backstabs as well as violence as the elections approach.<br />
<br />
“Politicians should desist from creating make-believe stories to tarnish the image of their rivals. I want to advise my co-politicians not attack one another.<br />
<br />
“We should outgrow campaigns of calumny; focus on developmental issues and what we can offer people if elected.<br />
<br />
“Those who want to re-contest elections should not abandon their responsibilities for campaigns now.<br />
<br />
“This is the best time for them to work and serve the people that gave them the mandate to serve. If they do otherwise, it is worse than armed robbery.<br />
<br />
“If politicians abandon their mandates now because of electioneering campaigns, it is worse than robbery,” he said.<br />
<br />
Yusuff said that politicians also planning to buy votes with money would be disappointed, saying “Nigerians are getting wiser and enlightened now’’.<br />
<br />
On the menace of Fulani herdsmen in the country, he advised the security agencies to use their intelligence network to unravel the problem.<br />
<br />
“It is not about the President, I believe that it is another penetration of Book Haram into the system,” he added. </div>

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Addis Ababa Friday night after Buhari arrived for the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.<br />
<br />
The presidential spokesman said at the unveiling ceremony, the president would set the tone for the African continent’s anti-graft war.<br />
<br />
According to him, President Buhari was well prepared for the AU summit which has as its theme, “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.”<br />
<br />
He explained that “The theme for this year’s summit is essentially on corruption. The AU has chosen the theme of winning the fight against corruption as a sustainable launch pad for Africa for African transformation. So, it is important for President Muhammadu Buhari that he has been chosen as the champion for this theme.<br />
<br />
“What that tells you is that the whole continent is looking at the good work that our president is doing, pushing back and fighting corruption effectively. And the rest of the continent will say, let’s look at what Nigeria is doing and wants to share the Nigerian experience.<br />
<br />
“The president has come well prepared. He has the role of flagging off the continent’s wide war against corruption. So, he is going to set the tone and as well unveil the logo. So, it is big theme for our country.”<br />
<br />
Shehu further stated that the President would use the period of the meeting to engage in bilateral talks on other issues of continental significance such as single air transportation system, free movement, free trade, climate change, security, Lake Chad and the Sahel crisis as well as “all of these acts of terror flowing from Libya, Somalia, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo.”<br />

Continuing he said, “So, they (African leaders) have their plates full and it is going to be deeply and highly engaging for them. We are looking forward to, perhaps, one of the busiest summits ever in the African Union.”</div>

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said its troops recorded more successes in the ongoing clearance operation to route out remnants of the terrorists in Sambisa Forest.<br />

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Kukasheka, said this in a statement issued in Maiduguri.<br />
<br />
Kukasheka confirmed the killing of seven Boko Haram insurgents and destruction of 23 assorted vehicles in the operations.<br />
<br />
He disclosed that troops of Operation Lafiya Dole under the operation DEEP PUNCH II, on Friday attacked insurgents’ hideouts in Sambisa Forest and northern part of Borno.<br />
<br />
He said that the troops with support of Nigerian Air Force killed seven insurgents while several others escaped with gun shot wounds, adding that the troops destroyed 11 gun trucks, 12 vans and 30 bicycles while one gun truck and assorted ammunition were recovered in the operation.<br />
<br />
Kukasheka revealed that the troops also destroyed equipment, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), traps, delay devices and make shift accommodation at Camp Zero in Sambisa.<br />
<br />
However, the army spokesman said two soldiers sustained injuries in the operation and referred to military medical facility for treatment.<br />
<br />
Kukasheka called on the people in the northeast region to be vigilant of fleeing wounded insurgents and report suspicious persons in their communities to the military.<br />
<br />
According to him, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Yusuf, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, had visited the front line to commend and cheer up the soldiers.<br />
<br />
“On Friday 26th January, 2018, the troops with effective support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), had contact with the terrorists while advancing into Sambisa Forest.<br />
<br />
“During the encounter and further exploitation, the troops destroyed Boko Haram terrorists equipment, make-shift accommodation around Camp Zairo, Improvised Explosives Device (IEDs), Booby traps, other delaying obstacles and devices.<br />
<br />
“The troops also neutralised seven Boko Haram terrorists and wounded several others.<br />
<br />
“In addition, the gallant troops recovered 1 Gun truck, 1 Anti-Aircraft Gun, 1 Machine Gun, a Pistol, large quantity of Anti-Aircraft Gun ammunition, a 120mm Mortar Base Plate and a Dane Gun.<br />
<br />
“Similarly, the troops destroyed 11 Boko Haram terrorists Gun trucks, 12 Hilux vehicles, 3 Canter trucks 2 Double Barrel Rifles, 30 Bicycles, Power generating sets, cylinders, printers, military kits and IED making workshop.<br />
<br />
“Unfortunately, two soldiers were wounded during the encounter, the wounded soldiers were evacuated by Nigerian Air Force and are responding to treatment,” he said.</div>

Billionaire businessman and founder of Aiteo Group, Mr. Benedict Peters, has denied social media reports that he is funding the new coalition reportedly being headed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.<br />

Peters said this in a statement on Friday night.<br />
<br />
He said, “For the record, I wish to state, categorically and unequivocally, that I am not a financier of the said organisation or any socio-political partisan association or political party in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world.<br />
<br />
“As an international businessman of repute, I have deliberately stayed away from politics preferring, instead, to focus and give my all to the development of my business interests across the African continent.<br />
<br />
“Corporate Social Responsibility contributions has seen the Aiteo Group, which I lead, provide investment support in medicine and medical research dedicated to seeking cures for several ailments which affect the African continent as well as investment in sport and sport as a panacea for the development of Africa’s teeming youth population.”<br />
<br />
Peters, who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission but was recently declared a legitimate businessman by Justice Ashi Valentine of an FCT High Court, said neither himself nor his company was supporting any political movement.<br />
<br />
He said the reports were part of a grand plot to pit him against the Federal Government.<br />
<br />
The businessman admitted that he was close to Obasanjo, adding that the former President and his late father were friends and he has remained close to Obasanjo for over 30 years.<br />
<br />
Peters, however, stated that the former President had never discussed politics with him.<br />
<br />
He added, “In the publishers’ indecent haste to malign the former president and I, amongst others, they demonstrated a shameful shallowness that paid no heed to the very personal nature of our relationship.<br />
<br />
“For the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, I also confirm, categorically, that the former President has, on no occasion, discussed or mentioned any such plan or intention to me.  This situation very pointedly affirms the irrationality and farcicality of the allegations as a whole.”<br />
<br />
The billionaire said he would be forced to take legal action against his detractors if they continued to spread rumours about him on social media.<br />
<br />
Peters added, “As unconvincing and implausible as these allegations are, I am constrained to take steps to address these unbridled excesses as a means of protecting my family, my business and I from these unwarranted personal attacks.<br />
<br />
“Accordingly, I have instructed my lawyers to immediately take steps to obtain a retraction, in the absence of which they are to take all steps available to provide me with protection, remedy and relief.</div>

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the conviction and sentencing of a former member of the Kogi State House of Assembly and ex-Caretaker Chairman, Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of the state, Gabriel Daudu, for N1.4bn fraud.<br />

Daudu was  arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before the Federal High Court  in April 2010.<br />
<br />
He was arraigned on 208 counts of money laundering and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N1.4bn.<br />
<br />
The prosecution lawyer, Wahab Shittu, fielded 13 witnesses and tendered 47 exhibits to prove the charges against Daudu.<br />
<br />
At the end of the trial, the judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, found Daudu guilty on 77 counts and sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each count.<br />
<br />
The sentences on each of the counts  to run concurrently.<br />
<br />
But Daudu, through his lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), had appealed against the judgment.<br />
<br />
But the Court of Appeal, Abuja, in its judgment delivered on March 1, 2017 upheld the decision of the trial court and dismissed the appeal for “lacking in merit.”<br />
<br />
The convict then appealed to the Supreme Court.<br />
<br />
The apex court, on July 6, 2017 granted Daudu bail in the sum of N2m  with two sureties in like sum and who were to own landed property and must be resident in the Federal Capital Territory.<br />
<br />
But in its judgment on Friday, a panel of five Justices of the Supreme Court, resolved all the issues against the appellant and accordingly dismissed the appeal.<br />
<br />
In the lead judgment prepared by Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs, the court described the appeal as “unmeritorious”.<br />
<br />
With the Supreme Court judgment, Daudu, who had been on bail, is expected to return to serve his sentence.</div>

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arraigned one Muhammed Momoh before Justice U. P. Kekemeke of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Apo, on one charge of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretences.<br />

Momoh was arrested on December 22, 2017 by operatives of the EFCC for attempting to defraud the Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, and his wife, Mairo.<br />
<br />
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspect, while posing as a private investigator from the Villa approached the wife of the governor with a proposition to help stop a purported investigation of two accounts belonging to the governor.<br />
<br />
The suspect claimed he came across information regarding the two accounts that had been under investigation since 2011 and also intercepted mails and gotten wind of investigation report purportedly sent to First Bank by the EFCC.<br />
<br />
The EFCC said the suspect requested for N8m but was offered N6m.<br />
<br />
Suspicious about the proposal, the governor’s family contacted the commission and were asked to play along with the suspect. The suspect was arrested in a sting operation after he collected marked N2m.<br />
<br />
The offence is contrary to Section 1(1)(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.<br />
<br />
The charge sheet read in part, “Muhammed Momoh, on or about the 22nd day of December,2017 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N2m from one Hajia Mairo Tanko Al-Makura through Idris Ahmed Al-makura under the pretext that you are a private investigator with capacity to help the said Hajia Mairo Tanko Al-Makura resolve her case with the EFCC which you knew to be false.”<br />
<br />
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.<br />
<br />
In view of his plea, counsel for the EFCC, Benjamin Manji, asked for a date to commence trial and also asked the court to remand the defendant in prison pending trial.<br />
<br />
Momoh’s counsel, F. U. Okolo, however, urged the court to admit the defendant to bail, relying on Section 35(c) ,36(6) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended and section 156,162 and 167 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.<br />
<br />
Justice Kekemeke admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N5m and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must have property within the jurisdiction of the court.<br />
<br />
The matter has been adjourned till March 7, 2018 for hearing.</div>

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been advised to purge himself of contempt for his successors. In a statement on the heels of Obasanjo’s advice to President Muhammadu Buhari not to run for re-election in 2019, the Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) said OBJ’s “unsolicited missive” was curious and worrisome.<br />

In the statement signed by its chairman, Austin Braimoh, BMSG wondered why the former President always found fault with each and every of his successor in office, noting that “what is apparent in the unbecoming admonitions inherent in Obasanjo’s letters to his successors is a base exhibition of his self importance and a rather, narrow perception of governance and its concomitant service delivery to the majority of Nigerian people.”<br />
<br />
According to BMSG “the reasons adduced by the former president in calling on President Buhari not to run is a lowly, pedestrian generalization, lacking in-depth analysis of the country’s national challenges, perennial contradictions and limited historical economic outlook. We expected a better and insightful dissection of the state of the nation from a man that had administered this country at the highest possible level twice.<br />
<br />
“What we observed in Chief Obasanjo’s ‘roadside’ scorecard of the Buhari administration is a haste to once again flaunt his Messianic complex as both political aggregator and moral compass. We, however, find this desperation to aggregate national sentiments as a lowly expropriation of the inalienable right of the mass of Nigerian people to decide and determine who lead them at every point in time.<br />
<br />
“We should remind Chief Obasanjo that the Nigerian mass are educated and politically sophisticated and discerning enough to evaluate the capacity and capabilities of the government to deliver on the mandate they freely gave the same government in 2015. It is definitely not in the place of Chief Obasanjo to accuse President Buhari of nepotism, Nigerians still remember vividly how he promoted his biological daughter and other hangers-on through government at all the different tiers of government.<br />
<br />
BMSG argued that Chief Obasanjo should not question the anti corruption fight of the Buhari administration, noting that “this is the first time since 1985 that the country is witnessing an all-inclusive and encompassing fight against former and serving corrupt government officials and their collaborators. We can only encourage President Buhari to do more.<br />
<br />
“Rather than harass, by subterfuge, President Buhari from running for a deserved second term, we implore Chief Obasanjo to publicly declare his preference for the presidential election 2019. This is what is required of a statesman worth his salt”, the group said.</div>

Nigeria and India would mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2018 since the establishment of such relations in 1958.<br />

Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Nagabhushana Reddy, said this at an event to mark the 69th Republic Day of India on Friday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Reddy said that both countries had over the years remained strategic partners with improved levels of cooperation between them with a bilateral trade volume of 9.4 billion dollars in 2017.<br />
<br />
“India is now the largest trading partner of Nigeria globally and Nigeria is the largest trading partner of India in Africa with bilateral trade of 9.4 billion dollars last year.”<br />
<br />
Both countries have had existing relations in various areas including agriculture, defense, trade, capacity building, healthcare, infrastructure and socio-cultural relations.<br />
<br />
The envoy, in a separate interview, said that most of the trade was reliant on oil import from Nigeria, which stands at 80 per cent compared to 20 per cent of Indian exports to Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“Though, we are the largest purchaser of crude oil from Nigeria, there is room for improvement.<br />
<br />
“The trade balance is 80-20 where 80 per cent is what we import from Nigeria and 20 per cent we export which is essentially in pharmaceuticals, engineering equipment, automobile to some of the specialised products particularly in the power sector.<br />
<br />
“We also have some amount of fuel being sold here by Indian oil companies.”<br />
<br />
Gathered from the website of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, is that India imports around 12 per cent of its crude oil requirements from Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The ministry stated that petroleum imports from Nigeria accounted for 7.46 billion dollars out of total imports of 7.65 billion dollars in 2016 to 2017.<br />
<br />
India’s imports, however, declined significantly by 23 per cent to 7.65 billion dollars during the period 2016 to 2017 as against 9.94 billion dollars registered during the period 2015 to 2016 due to the fall in crude oil prices in the international market.<br />
<br />
The decline, however, did not affect India’s amount of oil imports from the country.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, India’s exports to Nigeria declined from 2.22 billion dollars in 2015 to 2016 to 1.77 billion dollars in the period of 2016 to 2017 due to Nigeria’s internal security and economic recession.<br />
<br />
The Indian high commissioner added that India was an emerging development partner of Nigeria with emphasis on sharing of knowledge and experience with a view to improve capacity building in diverse areas.<br />
<br />
He reiterated that about 500 training programmes annually were offered under the India Technical and Economic Cooperation programme.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, he reiterated the readiness and commitment of his government extend developmental assistance for projects of national importance to Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Director of Regions, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olusola Iginla, expressed optimism in the relations shared between both countries.<br />
<br />
Iginla reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to “cooperate in the conclusion of all outstanding agreements” to strengthen bilateral relations.<br />
<br />
“I will conclude by expressing Nigeria’s gratitude to the Indian High Commission for sustaining the excellent relations that exist between the two countries.<br />
<br />
“I also request that the high commissioner conveys the willingness of the Government of Nigeria to partner with the Government of India and its private sector in accelerating the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan of Nigeria for the mutual benefit of both countries.”<br />

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday dismissed an application for an order compelling the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to produce the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, whom his family and lawyers had declared missing since September 2017.<br />

Delivering judgment on the application filed on behalf of Kanu, Justice Binta Nyako, ruled that there was no evidence showing that the IPOB leader was in the custody of the Nigerian Army as contended in the suit.<br />
<br />
Justice Nyako noted that Kanu was the applicant who instituted the suit, wondering how a person declared missing was the one praying the court to make the orders sought in the suit.<br />
<br />
The judge explained that the suit should have been commenced “in the name” of Kanu rather than listing him as the applicant.<br />
<br />
She held that affidavits filed in support of the suit by the Ifeanyi Ejiofor-led legal team were laced with criminal allegations against the Nigerian Army.<br />
<br />
The judge explained that such allegations required to be proven beyond reasonable doubt, which the applicant’s lawyers failed to do.<br />
<br />
She ruled, “Has the applicant placed enough evidence to show that the respondent was the last to see the applicant?<br />
<br />
“Was there any evidence that he was last seen with even one soldier? The onus of proof will not shift from the applicant to the respondent except the applicant is able to prove that he was last seen by the respondent. This they have failed to do.<br />
<br />
“This application fails and it is hereby dismissed.”<br />
<br />
Ejiofor with some lawyers acting on Kanu’s behalf, had on September 27, 2017, filed an originating motion of a ‘habeas corpus’ marked FHC/ABJ/CS/908/20017, praying for an order directing Buratai to produce Kanu in court.<br />
<br />
Part of the 12 grounds of the motion, stated that “rampaging soldiers” under the Chief of Army’s command allegedly invaded Kanu’s house in Afara-Ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State on September 14, 2017,  abducted and possibly killed the IPOB leader and his other relatives in the process.<br />
<br />
The lawyers claimed that soldiers had a direct contact with Kanu on September 14, 2017, when they allegedly invaded the IPOB leader’s house “on a murderous raid, where life and mortar bullets were fired on an unarmed and defenceless populace, leaving 28 persons dead and abducting many.”<br />
<br />
“It is either the respondent’s rampaging soldiers abducted the applicant during this raid or must have killed him in the process,” part of the grounds of the motion read.<br />
<br />
Ejiofor, who referred to photo exhibits allegedly showing scenes of destruction at Kanu’s house during the alleged invasion by the soldiers, urged the court to “invoke the doctrine of last seen” and compel the Chief of Army Staff to produce Kanu.<br />
<br />
But arguing the Chief of Army Staff’s objection to the suit, Mr. Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the suit, which he said was “riddled with conjecture, speculation, assumption and unfounded opinions”.<br />
<br />
He said contrary to the contention in the suit, soldiers had no contact with Kanu during the said operations.<br />
<br />
He argued that the application, not being certain that Kanu was in the custody of the Nigerian Army, “the writ of habeas corpus cannot be used.”<br />
<br />
He also argued that the court could only invoke the doctrine of “last seen” in a criminal trial involving murder or culpable homicide whereby the court would impose a duty on the accused persons to account for the death of the deceased.<br />
<br />
He also faulted the competence of the suit and other processes allegedly filed by the defendant outside the time stipulated by the court’s rules.<br />
<br />
Justice Nyako agreed with the Chief of Army’s lawyer on Friday to the effect that “the doctrine of last seen” was only applicable in a murder case.<br />
<br />
Justice Nyako is the same judge before whom Kanu and others are being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on charges of treasonable felony.<br />
<br />
Following Kanu’s absence from the proceedings of the criminal trial on October 17, 2017, some weeks after the alleged military invasion of his home, the judge ordered Kanu’s sureties, including a serving senator, Eyinnaya Abaribe, to account for the defendant’s whereabouts.<br />
<br />
On Friday, after the judge delivered her judgment, Ejiofor asked about the status of the criminal trial since Kanu was still missing.<br />
<br />
In response, Justice Nyako said the sureties were duty-bound to produce the IPOB leader in court at the next hearing date on February 20.<br />
<br />
She said, “As far as I am concerned, the applicant is on bail. Was he not released on bail based on an undertaking by sureties?<br />
<br />
“The sureties guaranteed to produce the applicant in court for his trial, so three of them should produce him. They made an undertaking and deposed to the fact that they would produce him to stand trial.<br />
<br />
“If there is any reason they cannot produce him, they should tell me on that date.”</div>

 Four of the six zonal vice chairmen of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC have dissociated themselves from a purported letter allegedly written by them, questioning the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun’s handling of party’s finances.<br />

Reacting to the development, National Vice Chairman (North East), Comrade Mustapha Salihu said; “When I learnt about a purported letter written by APC National Vice Chairmen, I took the liberty of contacting all the zonal chairmen. I am not aware of writing any letter or signing any. All my colleagues also expressed surprise that they don’t know of the existence of any letter. On the date the purported letter was submitted, we had our working committee. The minutes of the meeting are available and there is no letter or record of such. This shows it is the product of miscreants who want to distract us and cause acrimony within the party.<br />
“The issues that were raised in the purported letter more especially issue of finances are laughable. Do we have money in the APC? You know our plight. The party doesn’t have funds talk less of misappropriating. The national vice chairmen do not have any knowledge of this letter. This letter is a hoax”.<br />

On his part, National Vice Chairman (South South), Ntufam Hilliard Eta, simply said; ““It is fake news, we did not author it”<br />
<br />
Also, National Vice Chairman (South South), Emma Eneukwu, said “We did not write any letter. It’s a fake document“<br />
<br />
National Vice Chairman (North Central) Zakari Idde while reacting to the issue said; “I have been attending our regular meetings of the NWC and I feel very surprised and I am just hearing this from you now, I am not part of any letter. Things are never done in that manner. I disassociate myself in totality from it.”<br />
<br />
Speculations were rife Friday evening in Abuja that the six zonal vice chairmen of the party had passed a vote of no confidence on the national chairman.<br />
<br />
There had been moves by some pro-establishment forces to get the buy-in of party bigwigs for the extension of the tenure of the current NWC.</div>

Lekki Concession Company Limited has announced that it will increase the toll tariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1, 2018.<br />

The LCC said in a statement on Friday that the upward review of the tolls followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State.<br />
<br />
Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a mini commuter bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 on the N80 currently being charged. This, it noted, was the agreement it reached with the drivers’ union during the consultations.<br />
<br />
It said the toll increase was as a result of current economic and business realities that had adversely affected the cost of operations and servicing its loan obligations.<br />
<br />
The Managing Director, LCC, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, stated that the feedback and recommendations received during the series of consultations held in December 2017 with stakeholders in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and its environs considerably influenced the new fares to be paid by motorists plying the expressway and the Ikoyi Link Bridge.<br />
<br />
Hassan said, “Since the commencement of tolling in December 2011, the toll tariffs have remained the same despite the continuous increase in the cost of operations to ensure that the toll plazas and the road infrastructure are well maintained.<br />
<br />
“The toll review has also become necessary to enable the company to meet its loan obligations to its local and foreign lenders, considering the fact that foreign exchange rates have continued to increase astronomically in the last couple of years. The LCC cannot continue to operate or provide the services required from us if we do not review the toll tariffs.”<br />
<br />
The LCC’s attempt to raise the fares on November 8 last year was greeted with a public outcry, which made the state government to prevail on the firm to suspend the action.</div>

The Christian Association of Nigeria on Friday accused leaders of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam of endorsing the killings by herdsmen across the country.<br />

CAN General Secretary, Revd.  Musa Asake, said this in reaction to JNI’s allegation that Christian leaders were promoting violence in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The JNI, headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, had earlier in a statement by its secretary, Khalid Aliyu, accused Christian leaders of fanning the embers of discord among Nigerians.<br />
<br />
But Asake in a statement in Abuja berated Aliyu for ignoring CAN’s position on the ongoing killings in some states of the federation.<br />
<br />
He said, “Instead of facing reality and admitting its ungodly complicity with the Fulani terrorists, the JNI leadership at its press conference held in Kaduna on January 21, 2018, embarked on character assassination, acrimony, vulgar abuse in its futile attempt to justify its ungodly, unpatriotic and wicked support for the murderous Fulani herdsmen who are also enjoying the complicity of the security agencies,  whose headships are occupied by the JNI’s cronies at the expense of the unity and progress of our dear country.”<br />
<br />
The CAN scribe stated that the rampaging herdsmen were enjoying tacit encouragement from the JNI leadership, “the way and manner they did for the Boko Haram terrorists when they began thinking they were spreading Islam in the country.”<br />
<br />
The Christian body observed that at no time did the JNI publicly condemn the criminal activities of the Fulani herdsmen since they began killing innocent Nigerians.<br />
<br />
It added, “It is an open secret that the criminal activities of their boys have gone to the extreme because of the tacit encouragement they are getting from the leadership of the JNI.”</div>

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has been told how some telephone conversation recorded exposed the alleged lies told by the embattled Federal High Court judge, Rita Ofili-Ajumogibia to the investigating officers during investigation.<br />
<br />
The Investigation officer was attached to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the agency which is prosecuting her for alleged corrupt practices. Justice Ajumogobia is standing trial along with a former EFCC prosecutor, Godwin Obla.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>When the investigation commenced and the investigators sought her attention to respond to some allegations, Justice Ajumogobia lied that she was on medical admission. But unknown to her, the investigation had checked her to confirm the veracity or otherwise of her claim.<br />
<br />
The recordings of the conversation were played today in court. At today’s proceedings Mr. Abdullahi Lawal, an EFCC, operative, told a Lagos High court judge, Justice Hakeem Oshodi that Justice Ajumogobia lied about the sum of 20 million paid into her bank account as proceeds from sales of a land. The investigator, Mr. Lawal while being led in continuation of evidence by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo of the EFCC’s legal department for the third time testified that findings from the defendant indicated that the payment which she mentioned was a payment for sale of her land in Abeokuta to two persons, one Haruna Abdullahi and one Tola were false.<br />
<br />
According to the witness, “During the course of investigation, we discovered that sometimes in February 2015, the sum of 8 million naira was paid into her Lordship account, Nigel and Colive Company account. “She was confronted about the payment where she mentioned that the money was for the sale of her land at Abeokuta, that it was sold to two people: Haruna Abdullahi and one Tola.”<br />
<br />
 He added that further investigation revealed that Haruna was a Bureau De Change operator in Lagos and there was no transaction between the two, that is, the 1st defendant and the operator. “Whereas Tola was a building contractor that handled the building of her residence at Park View Estate.”<br />
<br />
 He explained further that there was no transaction between them as regards the said sum. Lawal’s evidence also included two audio recordings of telephone conversation between him and the embattled judge, played before the court, stating showed that when he initially tried to invite the judge on the payment of the said sum into her account, the investigator alleged that the judge lied she was ill and that she was in an hospital at Ikoyi but investigation showed that her claim was also false.<br />

In one of the audio recordings played, the prosecution witness confirmed to the court that the voice of the caller and receiver were his and the judge.<br />

Mr. Lawal: Hello Ma, are you still at the hospital?<br />
<br />
The embattled judge: Yes, I am.<br />
<br />
Mr. Lawal: Right now, we are here at the hospital and you are not there.<br />
<br />
The embattled judge: Huh, are you there?<br />
<br />
Mr. Lawal: Hello, Hello, Hello,.. In explaining further what transpired between them, the witness said, “As at the time this conversation ensued, I was at Gold Cross Hospital, Ikoyi.” “What happened was that Honourable Ajumogobia phone went off when I was calling and the sound seized.” He buttressed that the judge was not in the hospital and that was why he put across to her that call. He explained that what prompted his visit to the hospital was as a result of the first phone conversation he had with her, which partly went thus:<br />

The embattled judge: I have been on admission at Gold Cross.<br />
<br />
Mr. Lawal: When do we expect you in our office?<br />
<br />
The embattled judge: Let me get discharge, I’m not running away. I am not as sick as I think I am. Can I reach you on this line? Do you want to come there?<br />
<br />
Mr. Lawal: No.<br />
<br />
The embattled judge: What is your name?<br />
<br />
Mr. Lawal: Abdullahi Lawal.<br />
<br />
The prosecution witness added that based on this conversation, he went to the hospital to confirm the truthfulness of her claim but she was not there.<br />
<br />
But while leading his witness, Oyedepo attempted to seek for amended charge when it appeared that Ajumogobia’s lawyer, Mr. Robert Clarke opposed the line of evidence claiming that the prosecutor derailed from the charge before the court and brought in evidence on another sum of 12 million naira against Clarke’s client.<br />
<br />
Oyedepo led his witness to testify that one Omale Musa, an Assistant Controller- a Customs officer working at Abuja office also paid 4 million, 3 million and 5 million naira totalling 12 million naira into Ajumogobia’s account. Meanwhile, the second defendant, Mr. Obla has again asked for permission of the court to travel to America between now and February.<br />
<br />
Justice Oshodi who was visibly uncomfortable with four weeks absence however granted Obla access to his travel document in order to procure visa for his trip and ordered that it should be return to the court Registrar on or before 5th March and appear for further proceedings adjourned till 23rd February, 2018 for continuation of evidence-in-chief of the witness in the defendants’ trial.<br />
<br />
It would be recall that Ofili-Ajumogobia is standing trial alongside Mr. Obla, SAN and former prosecutor of the EFCC. They are jointly charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice. Obla is facing trial on two counts charge of offering gratification in the sum of N5 million to Ajumogobia, a public official while serving as a Federal High court judge. The duo denied all the charges against them.
