Inter Milan coach, Antonio Conte, has disclosed that his side lost 3-2 to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Friday night because of Romelu Lukaku’s unfortunate own goal.
Conte explained that after Lukaku’s own goal, Inter Milan also missed an opportunity to score against Sevilla.
Lukaku opened the scoring for Antonio Conte’s side before Luuk de Jong equalized for Sevilla.
Luuk de Jong then scored for the La Liga side before Diego Godin levelled for the Serie A side to make it 2-2 at half-time.

However, Lukaku’s own goal in the 74th minute following Diego Carlos’s shot gave Sevilla their sixth Europa League trophy at the RheinEnergieStadion in Germany.
“It was a balanced match between the two teams, two very good teams indeed, one specific incident could have changed the balance of the game,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia.
“We had the opportunities to win the game in the second half, but then there was this unfortunate own goal.
“We had the opportunity to score again after that, but unfortunately that’s the way it ended.”

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has declared that it has been losing about N1 billion every month due to the continued shutdown of cinemas over COVID-19.
Patrick Lee, the chairman of CEAN, who spoke to NAN in Lagos on Friday, said that since the lockdown in March, the industry kept losing N1 billion on a monthly basis, rendering staff jobless.
“We are appealing to the state and federal government to work together and allow us open our businesses, we have lost over N1billion every month that we have been locked down,” he said.
“And it is over N6billion now in six months. Most of our staff are currently unemployed. There are over 20,000 that depend on the industry in terms of supplies and those who work with artisans.

“We are at the point of bankruptcy, we want the government to help us to reopen because we have been locked down for six months now and it is really disheartening.
“We’ve seen other aspects of the economy that are already opened and we have put enough safety protocols in place to ensure, when our customers return to watch movies, they are safe.
“We promise to give room for social distancing, 50 percent hall occupancy, use of facemask, hand sanitisers and we have made provision for air conditioning systems that would pump in oxygen.
“We do not have a situation whereby we have 100, 200, or 500 people in the same place at the same time because of the nature in which cinemas operate.”
The federal government had earlier shut down cinemas alongside schools, worship centres, airlines, among others, as part of measures to combat the continued spread of COVID-19.
While the government recently announced the reopening of schools and worship centres following the gradual easing of the lockdown put in place, cinemas have remained shut across the country.

A massive fire on Friday razed Teju Foam in Ilupeju area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. The company is close to a popular first generation bank and a filling station.
According to reports, the fire began around 7:30 pm on Friday night.
Confirming the development, the Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said distress calls were received about a fire at the location which started at around 7.30pm
“The combined team of LRU fire and LASG Fire Service have contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other close properties,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that inspection of the affected areas revealed that the tailoring section, blocking section, galaxy department, cutting section and stacking area of the premises were affected.
“The cause of fire remains unknown while damping has been completed,” he said.

It appears the death of the late Ogun East former Senator, Buruji Kashamu, is marking the beginning of another era of political infighting in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
After the demise of Kashamu, many might have thought an end has come to the longtime rivalry between the factions in the Ogun State chapter of the PDP.
But, there are indications that there is going to be a relaunch of the factional crises in the party with the turn of events after the death of the late politician.
Kashamu, since 2014, had the control of the Ogun PDP ‘at his beck and call’. This was the time he broke up with former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, after the duo succeeded in hijacking the PDP structure from former Governor, Gbenga Daniel; causing the then ruling party to lose the 2011 governorship election to Senator Ibikunle Amosun of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

It will be recalled that Kashamu contested and won the Ogun East Senatorial seat under the party in 2015.
In 2019, having fortified himself with court judgements against the Uche Secondus-led PDP National Working Committee, Kashamu, in spite of his purported expulsion from the party, contested the Ogun governorship election.
He became the PDP candidate, scuttling Hon. Oladimeji Adebutu’s chance of clinching the party’s ticket.
Adebutu, who was not pleased with the situation, adopted the candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Hon. Adekunle Akinlade.
The PDP came fourth in the election as political observers in the state opined that Kashamu had no plans to win, saying he directed his loyalists across the state to vote for Prince Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Few months before his death, Kashamu and Adebutu renewed their rivalry as the two groups went ahead to conduct party congresses to appoint new state executive officers of the party.
Before the congresses, the Kashamu faction suffered a setback when the former State Chairman of the PDP, Engr Bayo Dayo, deserted him alongside some other state executive members of the party, to align with Adebutu.
With the congresses held, the Ogun PDP has two parallel state executives. While Sikirulahi Ogundele is the Chairman of the Ladi Adebutu faction, enjoying the support of the NWC; Samson Bamgbose is the Chairman of late Buruji’s camp.
No sooner had he been buried than news broke out that the late Senator had asked former Governor, Gbenga Daniel to take over his political structure in Ogun.
While many are still doubting the authenticity of the information, Daniel himself confirmed that the deceased truly sent him a delegation on the matter.
It will be recalled that Daniel, in March 2019, resigned from the PDP through a letter he sent to the party’s National Chairman, Secondus. He also announced his retirement from partisan politics.
Daniel, it was gathered, told his followers to support Dapo Abiodun for the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state.
Loyalists of Daniel, led by former Deputy Governor, Salmot Badru, have since defected to the Governor Abiodun’s faction of the APC.
In Ogun State today, many are anxiously waiting to see whether or not Daniel will agree to fill the leadership position vacated by Kashamu.
While still waiting, Sikirulahi Ogundele has said that Daniel is no longer a member of the PDP, wondering how someone who has resigned from the party could lead a faction of it.
According to Ogundele, Daniel needs to rejoin the party through his ward if he must be described as a member of same.
But, the Kashamu faction said the former Governor had accepted to lead the group, even when Daniel himself is yet to release a statement to that effect.
Olasunkanmi Oyejide, the faction’s Publicity Secretary, spoke on an Abeokuta radio station that the group met with Daniel and he had agreed to be their new leader.
Meanwhile, a video has surfaced on the social media, wherein Chief Kensington Adebutu, father of Hon. Oladimeji Adebutu, was seen receiving a call from the late Kashamu.
In the video, Kashamu was heard begging Adebutu for forgiveness over anything he might have done to offend him.
It was gathered that close associates of the former Senator confirmed that the video was made while he was on his sick bed, shortly before his death.
Speaking in Yoruba, Kashamu was heard, making a vow that he would support the Odole Odua’s son, Oladimeji Adebutu, to become governor in Ogun State.
He also promised to withdraw all cases he filed against the lotto magnate from court.
The video has been generating mixed reactions from Ogun indigenes as many wonder why Kashamu would ask Daniel to lead his faction when he has already promised to support Chief Adebutu’s son for governor.
Speaking on the video, an Ogun State indigene, Ademola Oloko said: “By now, PDP should come together and make the wish of Buruji come true. He promised to work with Adebutu and also to settle all the grievances concerning his business deals with the family.
“To me, Daniel taking over is a plus to APC because deep down in his heart, he will still want the incumbent to spend second term in office considering what transpired in the last election. His directives to PDP members to vote for APC and the nonchalant attitude of late Buruji to play active politics caused PDP to come fourth in the last election.
“2023 is around the corner and OGD did not have the financial chest to bear the party expenses. Buruji has spoken to support Ladi Adebutu, his followers should do the same. The purpose of releasing the video is to counter the claim of OGD that Buruji had plans to hand over his structure to him.
“Now OGD has no evidence to prove the claim while Lado has the evidence to support the peace move between the two political gladiators of PDP.”

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has hinted that the coronavirus pandemic could last for less than two years.
WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said with modern technology and international cooperation, COVID-19 battle could be won in less than two years.
Ghebreyesus disclosed this on Friday while addressing a news conference in Geneva, Switzerland, NAN reports.
He said while COVID-19 can spread more easily because the world is far more interconnected than it was 100 years ago, modern technology has given humanity the tools to fight the virus more effectively than the Spanish flu.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, says an empty 40-feet container has killed two persons in an accident at Ijesha area of Lagos.
Oke-Osanyintolu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Saturday.
He said the LASEMA management received a distress call via its emergency toll-free line at about 9:44 PM on Friday and activated a response team to the incident scene at Odo Olowu bus-stop at Ijesha.
On arrival at the scene, he said it was discovered that a truck loaded with an empty 40-feet container, which had brake failure, had rammed into a stationary commercial truck and subsequently fell down.

He said the truck driver was rescued by the agency’s responders and taken to the nearest hospital by LASEMA Response Unit Ambulance Service.
Oke-Osanyintolu said two adult females, however, died and their remains had been taken to the mortuary.
NAN reports that after numerous incidents of falling containers in Lagos and some parts of the country, the Federal Road Safety Corps had launched Operation Scorpion II to arrest and prosecute drivers of articulated trucks with unlatched containers.

Bayern Munich can complete only the second treble in their proud history by beating Paris Saint Germain in Sunday’s Champions League final to underline their status as Germany’s super club.
Bayern have cruised to the Lisbon final, scoring 42 goals in their Champions League matches.

Femi Falana, popular activist lawyer, has said that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State lacks the moral right to speak at the 60th Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, conference.
Falana said El-Rufai has a penchant of disobeying court orders right from when he was a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
He explained that El-Rufai’s action was inconsistent with the rules of NBA.
The activist lawyer stated this in a letter to the NBA’s Technical Committee, conference planning committee.
Galena’s letter reads partly: “You will agree with us that Mallam El-Rufai’s penchant for disobeying court orders is inconsistent with the aims and objects of the Nigerian Bar Association which includes promotion of rule of law.”
El-Rufai was billed to be one of the speakers at the NBA Conference scheduled for August 26 – 29, 2020.
However, his inclusion led to outrage and backlash, even on social media.
Nigerians and lawyers cited his comments on Southern Kaduna killings, alleged disdain for court orders, among others.
Following the condemnation from Nigerians, NBA had bowed to pressure and withdrew El-Rufai’s invitation.

The British High Commission in Nigeria has announced that it has reopened its visa Application Centres across the country.
The Commission made the announcement in a statement released via its Twitter account on Thursday, adding that there would be free visa replacement which will be open till December 2020 and covers individuals who will be travelling to the UK for work, study or to join their families.
In the statement by the Commission titled, ‘Update on VAC Services From The BHC Nigeria’ the commission said that any individual whose 30-day visa to travel to the UK for work, study or visitation had expired can request for a replacement free of charge.
“As a result of the disruptions to travel caused by COVID-19, we are experiencing high demand for replacement vignettes for 30-day visas to travel to the UK for work, study or to join family.

“If an individual’s 30-day visa to travel to the UK for work, study or to join family has expired, or is about to expire, they can request a replacement visa with revised validity dates free of charge until the end of this year.
“This does not apply to other types of visas. This process will be in place until the end of 2020. The replacement visa will be valid for 90 days.’
“To request a replacement visa, individuals can arrange to return their passport to their Visa Application Centre in Nigeria without an appointment,” the statement read.

A 16-year-old girl has been allegedly gang-raped by 30 men in the coastal resort of Eilat in Israel.
According to the Times of Israel, the teenager reported the case to Police that she was repeatedly assaulted while she was drunk in a hotel room.
It was learnt that some of the men allegedly recorded the act on their phones which led to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect.
According to Police report, the victim was not a guest at the hotel but had only gone there to drink with some of her friends.

But she was allegedly taken to one of the hotel rooms after she went to the bathroom and was raped by the group of men.
Report had that the men ‘lined up’ outside the room before going inside to assault her.
So far, police have arrested two suspects and are awaiting the results of a medical examination in custody.
However, one of the suspects confirmed to investigators that a large group of men had sex with the girl but it was consensual.
Reacting, Prime minister Netanyahu on his Twitter page described the rape as shocking.
His tweet read: “This is shocking, there is no other word.”
He described the incident as not just a crime against the girl but against humanity.
Netanyahu called for those men involved to be immediately brought to justice.
“This is not just a crime against the girl, this is a crime against humanity itself that deserves all condemnation and that those responsible for it should be brought to justice,” Netanyahu added.

Italian referee Daniele Orsato will take charge of the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, UEFA announced Thursday.
Sunday’s showpiece at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon will be the first European final for the 44-year-old official, who has been an international referee since 2010.
Orsato will be assisted by his compatriots Lorenzo Manganelli et Alessandro Giallatini.
Orsato is no stranger to Paris Saint-Germain.

Barely two months to the Ondo State governorship election, there are strong indications that the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party is facing another round of crisis over the choice of Mr. Gboluga Ikengboju as running of the party’s flag bearer for the election, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede.
Ikengboju, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency, was announced by Jegede as his running mate, via Twitter handle on Monday. The PDP candidate said the choice of his running mate was divine.
However, Ikengboju’s choice has not gone down well with some members of the party. Those in this school of thought are threatening to withhold their support for the candidate.
One of the PDP aspirants who lost to Jegede during the party primary, Mr. Banji Okunomo, has expressed displeasure over the choice of Ikengboju as running mate.

His campaign organisation made its feeling known in a communique issued at the end of a meeting on Thursday.
The communique read in part, “The BBO Executive session views with emphatic disapproval and absolute sense of rejection the undemocratic and unpopular dimension in which Jegede chose to foist the nomination of Ikengboju on the PDP as his running mate in stiff defiance to all wise counsels to the contrary portraying him as a rigidly conservative person that will always override superior majority view.”
They said a choice of one of those who contested the PDP primary and lost should have been better.
A former deputy governorship candidate of the party, Mr. John Mafo, while congratulating Ikengboju on his selection said Ikengboju’s choice was a good one.
Mafo said “Being a man under authority I am duty-bound to respect the choice of our candidate. Moreover, I am using this medium to call on all and sundry to let us put the issues of the primary and choice of deputy governorship candidate behind us and work for the success of our party in the forthcoming election.”

The Police in Ekiti State have arrested a lady, Mary Idris, for allegedly faking her own kidnap on August 9, 2020, with a view to extorting money from her parents.
The state Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo, said the lady was “arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor Olawuse, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, where she had gone from Ekiti State to carry out the act.”
The commissioner, who was represented by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, during the parade of 18 suspects for various offences at the police headquarters, said Mary’s mother “came to our station and reported that her daughter, Mary Idris, left home on August 9, at about 4pm and never returned.
“She said all efforts to reach her daughter via phone calls proved abortive. After a while, the younger sister of the suspect received a message through her phone that Mary had been kidnapped and demanded ransom to be paid to Access Bank Account number 11233209688.

“The command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives tracked the phone number that sent the message to Akure, Ondo State, where Mary was arrested alongside her accomplice, Victor Olawuse.”
Mary said, “I arranged the kidnap to get money from my parents because they are not taking proper care of me.”
The police also paraded one Femi Eyinafe for allegedly abducting and having canal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl for three days.
The commissioner said, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, and had described how he made the victim drink a locally manufactured bottled  beverage already laced with hard drugs, after which she lost consciousness for the three days.”

As speculations continue to trail the health condition of Mallam Mamman Daura, a nephew of the President, Muhammadu Buhari who has reportedly flown abroad for urgent medical treatment, a family source has said that the trip was a routine one that was long-planned.
An online news platform had reported that Daura, known to be one of the powerful men behind the Buhari Presidency, was flown to the United Kingdom.
“Daura, 79, was said to have been flown in a private jet to the UK on Wednesday after exhibiting respiratory difficulties with symptoms similar to coronavirus since last Friday,” the report had stated.
But a source close to the family who spoke to Vanguard on the condition of anonymity said that there was no truth in the report which alleged that Mallam Daura exhibited respiratory difficulties with symptoms similar to COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the source, “He (Mamman Daura) is there (in London) on a routine trip, it was long-planned. There is nothing wrong with Mamman Daura. You should ignore the online platform.”
It was gathered that Daura’s routine trip came at a time the Federal Government was yet to lift the ban imposed on international flights as one of the ways of curtailing the further spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria.
The Federal government had on Monday announced that international flights will resume August 29, 2020.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has claimed that some of its supervisors leaked exam questions before the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) began.
This was revealed by WAEC’s Head of National Office, Patrik Areghan, on Wednesday.
Areghan stated this during a monitoring exercise to some schools in Yaba, Lagos State.
He confirmed that the culpable supervisors have since been arrested and warned students not to indulge in malpractice.

“Students should not go about looking for anything they call expo. It is shameful, supervisors collecting question papers from WAEC and going somewhere to open the questions.
“Yesterday we caught one in Nasarawa. They don’t know that we have a way of detecting them. In Bauchi, we caught another. We detected it from here. In Port Harcourt, a candidate did the same thing and was arrested,” Areghan said.
This year’s examinations began on Monday, August 17 and will end September 7.

Following Air Strikes by fighter aircraft of the Nigerian Airforce on terrorists and their camps in the Lake Chad region, more than 20 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists were on Monday liquidated, according to the Defence headquarters.
Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said, ‘In continuation of air strikes being conducted under subsidiary Operation Hail Storm, the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole has successfully neutralized some Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) Commanders and knocked out logistics facilities at Bukar Meram on the fringes of the Lake Chad in Borno State.
“The Air strikes also neutralized several terrorists at Dole, a settlement in the Southern part of Borno State.

“The air interdiction missions were executed on 17 August 2020 on the heels of credible intelligence reports indicating a resurgence of terrorists’ activities in the 2 settlements”.
He said, “Bukar Meram, a major ISWAP logistics hub linking other Island settlements of the Lake Chad, which also houses several of their fighters and some of their key leaders, was attacked by an enhanced force package of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopter gunships which hit designated targets in the area leading to the destruction of the logistics facilities and neutralization of several of the terrorists and their leaders.
“The attack at Dole was carried out after Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions showed a build up of activities in the area after the relocation of some terrorists from nearby settlements of Kokiwa and Yale.
“Overhead the area the ISR aircraft spotted no fewer than 20 terrorists in the area, which were taken out by the NAF attack aircraft.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Kano State has reacted to the death sentence passed on a musician, Yahaya Aminu Sharif.
An Upper Sharia court had sentenced Sharif to death for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
The court sitting in Kano had sentenced Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, to death by handing for comments against Prophet Mohammad.
The trial Judge, Khadi Muhammad Ali-Kani had ruled that the 23-year-old singer’s audio remark against Prophet Mohammad was against Islamic law.

Reacting, the Chairman of Kano State chapter of CAN, Adeolu Samuel Adeyemo said the group has no objection to the ruling.
Speaking with newsmen in Kano, Adeyemo said CAN has no objection because the ruling was is in line with Islamic jurisprudence.
According to Adeyemo: “For us in CAN, the judgment of the Shari’a court is according to Islamic law and so we don’t have an objection to it because it is according to the position of Islam.
“Now, if you want to know the position of Christianity about blasphemy, I will say there is what you can blaspheme about and what you cannot.
“And the Lord Jesus said blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a grievous sin that has no forgiveness. That is the position of Christianity.”

Four-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshola, says she never had the support of her parents playing football while growing up in Lagos.
Oshoala is part of UEFA’s Together #WePlayStrong women’s football campaign, which kicked off on Tuesday.
In a video documentary posted on the campaign’s Instagram page, the 25-year-old talked about her road to stardom and the lack of support from her parents.
She said, “Talking about my journey of football right from the beginning, I started with my friends in school and I was just doing it for fun.

“It became something that I liked to do more often and after school hours I would play football before I go home. My parents were always complaining that I came home late after school hours. When I finished from school, I had like almost months doing nothing, so I just spoke with my parents (that) maybe they could just allow me to play for fun and nothing serious.
“From there I played in a tournament, then I was discovered by one of the teams and they told me they wanted me. But I said I didn’t want to play professional football, but they said “no” because I have the qualities.
“I said my parents were not going to allow me to do that, so they shouldn’t bother trying. My parents never supported me; the only person who was supportive was my grandmother. She was the only one who was there. Even when my dad and mum wanted to beat me because I went to play football, she was the only one who would support and give me food.”
Oshoala would go on to play for Robo FC and River Angels in Nigeria before joining Liverpool Ladies in England.
She joined Barcelona last January, initially on loan, and has flourished this season, scoring 20 goals in 19 appearances before the coronavirus outbreak.

Mallam Wada Maida, former Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to President Muhammadu Buhari has passed on.
Maida died on Monday night in Abuja, according to a family source.
Maida was CPS to Buhari when he was military head of state.
He served as Managing Director (MD) of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He later founded and became the Chairman of Peoples Media Limited, publisher of Peoples Daily Newspapers.
In March 2020, Buhari celebrated Maida on his 70th birthday.

In continuation of Operation Sahel Sanity, the military offensive to wipe out armed bandits from North West, troops deployed at Forward Operation Base Sabon Birni LGA of Sokoto State on 15 August 2020 after a painstaking undercover operation successfully smashed a notorious illegal arms smuggling syndicate.
The syndicate specialize in massive arms supply to bandits in the North West from across the international borders.
Consequently, the trio of Alhaji Adamu Alhassan, Salisu Adamu and Abdullahi Sani (all Nigerien citizens) were intercepted by the eagle-eyed troops at Dantudu in Mailailai District of Sabon Birni LGA of Sokoto State with 6 AK 47 Rifles, 3 AK 47 Rifle magazines and 2,415 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition deceptively concealed in various parts of their vehicle.
A statement by Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, Acting Director, Defence Nadia Operations said, ‘Preliminary investigation reveals that the dangerous consignment was meant for some bandits in Isah LGA of Sokoto State which could have led to loss of thousands of innocent lives but for the swift interception by the vigilant troops.

“However, one of the arrested arms supplier, Alhaji Adamu Alhassan who is diabetic and hypertensive experienced seizure and gave up the ghost while he was being rushed to the hospital.
“Nevertheless, investigation of the other 2 accomplices continues in order to track and arrest all those in the chain of the heinous activity in collaboration with other intelligence and security agencies from our neighboring countries.
“In another development, on 12 August 2020, in a combined special clearance operation, troops destroyed 12 bandit camps at Yobe Baranda in Batsari LGA of Katsina State, 3 bandits were neutralized in the process while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds.
“Relatedly, on 12 August 2020, troops of Forward Operation Base Wanke arrested a suspected bandit named Shehu Abdullahi while spying on traders activities in the market with the intent of organizing for their kidnap.
“Similarly same day on 12 August 2020, troops on patrol arrested another bandit informant in Magami named Umar Salisu.
“Furthermore, following the receipt of credible intelligence that some bandits were sighted at Danjibga Market, troops mobilized to the area and successfully arrested 5 suspected bandits namely Abubakar Ahmadu, Mohammed Bashir Tukur, Adamu Tahiyawo, Ibrahim Alhaji Haruna and Mohammed Yusuf.
“Also, on 14 August 2020, troops deployed at Forward Operation Base Kwantaragi arrested a bandit informant named Tukur Halilu at Mutukuda village in Maru LGA of Zamfara State.
‘ Items recovered from him include: 2 empty AK 47 Rifle magazines, 1 magazine carrier and a broken solar panel.
“Also same day troops at Forward Operation Base Anka arrested 2 bandits’ informants named Mohammed Bashir and Najibu Dalha in Wuya village of Anka LGA of Zamfara State.
“All arrested suspects are currently in custody undergoing preliminary investigation before being forwarded to appropriate prosecuting authorities.
Onyeuko thanked the general populace of the North West zone for their cooperation in providing information without which the tremendous successes we have achieved so far would not have been possible.
“As partners in progress, we still solicit timely and actionable intelligence that will assist the troops. It is hoped the enemy would soon be defeated. Our gallant troops are equally encouraged for their commitment and resilience in the course of this operation”, he added.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, says his administration is installing closed-circuit televisions in the southern part of the state as part of efforts to strengthen security forces and restore calm in the crisis-torn communities.
The governor made this known in a statement he signed on Monday after meeting with the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Revd. Supo Ayokunle, and other CAN leaders in Kaduna.
The statement titled, ‘Let Us Unite to Build a Constituency for Peace in Kaduna State’ partly read, “Since last month, the state government and security agencies have been working to contain an upsurge in violence and needless killings in parts of the state. We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in a totally unnecessary frenzy of communal attacks, reprisals and revenge.
“While we mourn the dead, our immediate focus remains to stop the cycle of attacks and reprisals. We remain committed to ending the legacy of violence that has blighted the state for 40 years, needlessly taken many lives and curtailed the life chances of others.

“We will continue to support the security agencies to restore calm in the affected communities. Over the last five years, we have invested heavily in the security sector. We have consistently provided vehicles and other logistics support to the security agencies that are deployed in the state.
“We are also addressing the technology side of security, through the procurement of drones, the award of contracts to install CCTVs in phases in Kaduna, Kafanchan and Zaria metropolitan areas, build a command and control centre and establish a forensic laboratory.”
El-Rufai added that the recommendations and eight-point requests of the CAN President would be carefully examined.

Ace rapper, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has called on the Federal Government to reopen the entertainment industry.
The son of human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, made this known in a string of tweets on Monday shortly after the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced August 29 as the reopening date for international flights.
Like most public places, cinemas and other recreational outlets were shut in March to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
But while some public places like markets, banks, airports, amongst others have been allowed to reopen, cinemas, beaches and other places of relaxation remain closed.

Reacting, Falz wrote, “Restaurants have reopened, airlines have been operating, places of worship have also been permitted to reopen. Let’s not even start to talk about all the videos that have surfaced of political rallies happening, clearly neglecting all safety precautions.
“Right now, we don’t see anything but a government that contributes little or nothing to its creative sector and continues to attempt to stifle the sector in every way. Thousands of people have been left without any way to earn for several months.
“The entertainment industry must be allowed to gradually get back in business. Let’s start with cinemas reopening with all safety precautions in place.”
Also, a lawmaker representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency in the House of Assembly, Akin Alabi, tweeted, “It’s no longer making sense that cinemas are still closed. They have assured the government and the public that they are ready to open at less than half capacity. Planes are flying full capacity. Parties are going on. Don’t let me mention rallies.”

Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has reacted to claims that celebrities are being paid to say COVID-19 is real in Nigeria.
Henshaw shared her painful experience on her Instagram page after she went for COVID-19 test.
To her surprise, a fan responded saying celebrities were paid by Nigerian government to say coronavirus is real.
The actress who seemed infuriated by the comment wrote: “COVID-19 test is uncomfortable make I no lie. I was already in tears because this @NseIkpeEtim told me it was painful.
“Someone commented on my Instagram saying” all these celebrities that have been paid to say there is COVID-19, God will judge you.

Jumoke Razak, wife of the late All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Lanre Rasak, says her husband did not die of COVID-19.
She spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Epe.
Rasak was a member of Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC).
Jumoke stated that her husband’s death was natural as he had been sick for some time.

She said the way the husband died showed that it was time for him to answer the call of his creator.
“Although, my husband was sick but he was responding to treatment and looking healthy to recover, but suddenly, death caught up with him.
“I received a call from the hospital where my husband was treated that he gave up on Aug. 15. From God we come and to him we shall all return, God knows best.”
Jumoke disclosed that her husband was on admission at Reddington hospital in Lagos and that he was not isolated.
“He was receiving treatment as normal sick patient and not as COVID-19 patient. The public should desist from spreading rumour of whether my husband died of COVID-19 or not.
“I am saying emphatically that my husband, Lanre Rasak, did not die of COVID-19. Anybody can be sick and be treated fine while some will be sick and pass to eternity.
“Therefore, it is God’s time that He took my husband. May Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grant him Aljanat Firdaus,.”

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has said that it has begun an investigation into allegations that some officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja were collecting bribe from passengers on evacuation flights.
There have been reports that some of the airport officials demand bribe from returnees during COVID-19 clearance.
Also, it was alleged that the officials collect bribe to help the returnees evade the mandatory COVID-19 test and isolation which as part of the Presidential Task force on COVID-19 guidelines.
However, FAAN in a statement by its General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu, which was released on Sunday via its Twitter account said an investigation into the allegation has commenced.

It also advised passengers to desist from giving money to airport officials and to report any official from any agency that requests money under any guise.
“The recent allegation that some airport officials in Abuja were collecting money from returning passengers on evacuation flights is already being investigated by all agencies at the airport.” the statement read in part.

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a revised edition of the long-awaited Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to the National Assembly (NASS).
A source at NASS who spoke under the condition of anonymity confirmed the development on Monday.
Recall that the last time the PIB was debated by the NASS, during the first term of President Buhari, the bill was in four separate components.
The four components were the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), Petroleum Industry Finance Bill, Petroleum Host and Impacted Communities Bill (PHICB) and the Petroleum Industry Administrative Bill.
Out of the four components, only one of the components, the PIGB made it through to the President’s desk for assent but he refused to sign it.

President Buhari declined assent to the component of the bill earlier passed by the NASS with a promise to submit a better version of the bill.
However, according to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva all four components of the PIB would be compressed into one bill.
A team of lawyers at the Ministry of Justice finalized the draft of the long-awaited bill and sent it off to the NASS, according to Africa oil and gas report.
The frame of the document had earlier been approved by Buhari and the Federal executive council (FEC), the report stated.
Meanwhile, Senate President Ahmad Lawan had reiterated the legislative commitment to work in harmony with the executive arm for the speedy passage and signing into law of the bill.
The PIB has defied passage and assent, but Senator Lawan said, “It is our hope and desire that we are able to break the jinx that has visited the PIB since 2007”.

Three days after he was invited, quizzed and released by the Department of State Services, DSS, former Central Bank of Nigeria Deputy Governor, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, has been invited again by the security agency.
The DSS questioned Mailafia, last Thursday, over his comments on a radio station that repentant Boko Haram insurgents told him and some leaders that a serving northern governor was a commander of the terrorist group that has held North-East geopolitical zone on the jugular since 2009.
Confirming his invitation in a WhatsApp message, Obadiah said he is standing with former House of Representatives Speaker, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na’Abba, who will also appear before DSS, today (Monday).
The message read in part: “We stand firmly with Comrade the Rt. Hon. Ghali Na’bba. Solidarity forever!

“Comrades kindly be notified that the Men in Black have invited me for a ‘chat’ yet again. I’m to appear before them at the Jos Command HQ of DSS at 12.00 noon today Monday. Solidarity forever!”
Recall that Mailafia was first arrested less than a week ago after a viral video on the state of security regarding to Boko Haram and terrorism in the north.
Dr Mailafia, on Wednesday, honoured the invitation of DSS over his comment that government is culpable for the ongoing killing in Southern Kaduna, alleging that a serving governor in one of the states in the North is a Commander of Boko Haram.
He arrived at the Jos, Plateau State Command of the DSS at exactly 12:45 pm, along with his wife, Margaret; a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Pius Akubo; Plateau State Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Bawa; Rev. Gideon Para-Mallam, among others.
Members of various socio-cultural organisations from the Middle Belt, carrying placards demanding his immediate and unconditional release, were also at the entrance of the DSS office.
He was there from the time he reported until about 7 pm when he was released unconditionally.
Speaking shortly after his release, Dr Mailafia said he was treated with respect and decorum during the period of interrogation.
He noted that all the killings in Southern Kaduna and other states in the country must stop with immediate effect.
According to Mailafia, every Nigerian child, from Daura, Katsina, Manchok to Zaria and other places are his children.
He added that he was not talking politics, that the struggle for emancipation was his concern, stressing that he is not afraid to die for the sake of the people.
He pointed out that it is the duty of government to protect the lives and properties of citizens and commended his well-wishers and supporters, urging them not to give up on one Nigeria.
His wife, Margaret, appreciated all who stood by them, saying her husband is “a good man who stands with the people.”

Organisers of the Big Brother Naija, BBNaija ‘Lockdown’ edition, have come under attack over the eviction of housemate Kaisha on Sunday from the reality show.
Kaisha was evicted by the housemates after she appeared among the bottom four voted by the public last week.
With the new voting process, the housemates were told to choose two housemates to be evicted, which had Kaisha out of the house despite being on top of the bottom four with viewers votes at 3.89% unlike Neo, Trikytee and Wathoni.
This did not go down well with Kaisha’s fans who took to their social media pages pouring out their grievances, as they called on organisers of BBNaija to bring back the old voting process.

Nelson Enwerem Prince, one of the housemates in the Big Brother Naija Lockdown house, has revealed that he feels uncomfortable sleeping in his supposed lover, Tolanibaj’s bed.
Prince said he does not sleep peacefully whenever he sleeps in Tolani’s bed and that his spirit doesn’t accept some of her roommates.
The 25-year-old Abia-born housemate said whenever he passes the night in Tolani’s room, he’ll have to start sleeping all over again in his own bed the next day.
He said this when confronted by Tolani to explain why he avoids her room.

“It’s just about me,” he said.
“If I don’t feel comfortable about any place I don’t like being in that place. Yes I can come there during the day do whatever but I’m not just comfortable sleeping there.
“As a matter of fact I don’t really feel comfortable sleeping in any other beds. Me telling you that I don’t feel comfortable sleeping in you guys’ room, that’s the reason.
“I don’t feel comfortable there. Even when I sleep in your room, I don’t sleep as peacefully because even when I wake up the next day…how many times have I slept in your room?
“For every single time [I slept in your room] I always go back to my room to sleep the next day. The funny thing is, I wasn’t even the one that noticed it. People in my room noticed it.
“From day one, I’ve already told you I don’t want to come to that room. If I want to do something I go ahead and do it. If I want to go anywhere I go there and I don’t care about anyone’s opinion.
“From day one when you asked me to come sleep in your room, what did I say? The first I said was no. I don’t have to give you reasons.
“Can’t someone just feel uncomfortable somewhere? There are some people I don’t feel comfortable being around. Not that they did anything but because my spirit doesn’t accept them,” he stated

Hassan Boguma, a prominent chief in Borno, has condemned Nigeria’s security situation and corruption in government.
The Zanna Boguma of Borno also revealed how the North requested the United States to support President Muhammadu Buhari for the 2015 poll.
Boguma, a member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), spoke to Arewa Agenda.
He expressed concern over rising incidents of banditry, Boko Haram attacks on soft targets and kidnappings.

Boguma declared that Buhari has not done enough to develop the Northern region despite their huge contribution to his victories in the presidential elections.
“As far as Nigeria is concerned, Buhari only appointed our sons into positions but they haven’t done enough in terms of development. Northerners are being killed by terrorists and armed bandits without solution in sight. The massive votes that came out from North was the reason why he is President of this country now,” he stated.
The chief recalled how Northern elders travelled to America to lobby the world power for Buhari’s candidacy.
He said they told America that the president was serious about tackling insecurity and corruption, two of the president’s main agenda.
“We went up to America to influence the United State Government to support the cause of change in Nigeria. The Northern Elders Forum sent a delegation which I was part of. We went to Washington, we met with all those that matters in America from Department of State to Justice, to all other agencies of Government.
“We spoke to them about insecurity, we spoke to them about corruption in this country of which Buhari is always talking about, but unfortunately, Buhari in five years hasn’t done enough to remedy the situation the previous government was accused of,” he added.
Boguma, the State Project Coordinator, Youth Empowerment and Social Support Operation (YESO), urged Buhari to sit up and fix the Nigeria’s problems.
He advised youths to be self-reliant, avoid crime, social vices, and be good citizens.

The Dr Wale-Babalakin-led Governing Council of the University of Lagos says the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, was sacked for his alleged reckless spending of the varsity’s funds and breach of due process.
The allegations were contained in a statement titled, “I prefer to be probed by Professor of Public Sector Accounting, not Chemistry lecturer, says Prof Ogundipe in defence at UNILAG Council Meeting.”
According to the council, the Dr Saminu Dagara-led committee that probed Ogundipe reported that the VC and some members of his management team spent N57.9m on foreign trips, while they purchased two vehicles for N52.08m using “a contract splitting device that is very illegal.”
The committee also reported that Ogundipe’s management allegedly spent N52.2m on waste management and janitorial services “in breach of procurement law and practices.”

The VC was also alleged to have spent N112.4m to renovate the official living quarters of three principal staff, including the VC’s lodge, renovated with N49.4m.
The N112.4m, according to the committee, was without the council’s approval and was well above the VC’s approval limit of N2m.
“In the last six months, Prof. Ogundipe has recklessly been spending university money without giving any accounts.
“For instance, while the council approved spending towards staff palliative for COVID-19, he claimed he spend N67m on this without providing any breakdown of his spending,” the council stated in the statement.
Efforts to get Ogundipe’s reactions to the allegations on Sunday proved abortive.
One of our correspondents called his mobile line eight times, sent SMS and WhatsApp messages to his phone, neither did he pick the calls nor responded to the messages till press time.

Following the advice, Neo dropped a letter on Vee’s bed on Sunday afternoon, saying, “I’m sorry, can we have a chat.”
Vee responded in the affirmative in a letter that other housemates compelled her to submit to Neo personally.

A coalition of Igbo groups and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, on Sunday named Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi and Minister of Science and Technology Dr Ogbonnaya Onu as the best presidential candidates from the Southeast.
The coalition said it reached the decision after a joint meeting in Abakaliki where it deliberated on the best candidate from the Southeast and South-south for the presidency in 2023.
