Lionel Messi and Neymar showed their class as Barcelona beat a determined Alaves side 3-1 in the the Copa del Rey final in Madrid on Saturday, the Catlan club’s third straight win in the competition as they bid farewell to coach Luis Enrique on a high.<br />

Messi curled in the opener in the 30th minute from outside the area following clever link up play with Neymar after Alaves, who were playing in their first domestic final, had struck the inside of the post.<br />

The Basque side drew level three minutes later when Theo Hernandez fizzed a spectacular free kick into the top corner although Neymar restored Barca’s lead a minute before half-time, bundling in Andre Gomes’s pass from close range after starting the move with a dazzling run down the left.<br />

Paco Alcacer further stretched Barcelona’s lead two minutes later killing off Alaves’ hopes of a first trophy in their 96-year history and delivering Barca’s Copa del Rey, the ninth trophy of Luis Enrique’s three-year tenure.<br />

Borussia Dortmund ended a run of three successive DFB-Pokal final defeats with a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.<br />

Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who reportedly handed in a transfer request this week, scored his 40th goal of the season from the penalty spot for Dortmund midway through the second half to clinch the club’s fourth German Cup title and first in five years.<br />
<br />
Aubameyang also hit the crossbar late on as Dortmund put the defeats to Bayern Munich (twice) and Wolfsburg behind them in a record fourth-in-a-row final appearance.<br />
<br />
Dortmund took the lead after just eight minutes when Ousmane Dembele picked up where he had left off with his semi-final winner against Bayern.<br />

The midfielder reached double figures for the season with a left-footed shot from a tight angle.<br />

However, they could not press home their advantage and on the half-hour Frankfurt, appearing in their first cup final for 11 years, equalised through Ante Rebic.<br />

Dortmund replaced Marco Reus and Marcel Schmelzer with Gonzalo Castro and Christian Pulisic at half-time and it was the latter who won the penalty after he was fouled by Lukas Hradecky, allowing Aubameyang to his 40th in 46 matches this season.

Nice forward Balotelli, 26, has ambitions of winning the trophy awarded each year to the world’s best player at some point in his career. However, Messi and Ronaldo have had a duopoly over it in recent seasons, and Balotelli jokes that he would need to ‘kill’ both star players to have a chance of earning his own award. ‘I’ll have to kill those two to win it,’ he told Bresciaoggi.<br />

‘What I’ve done since the start of my career has not been enough, I will have to do more.’ Messi and Ronaldo have shared the honour between them for nearly a decade – one or the other has won the Ballon d’Or for each of the last nine seasons. During that time Balotelli has had a mixed career, with controversial stints at both AC and Inter Milan, along with Manchester City and Liverpool.<br />

He joined Ligue 1 club Nice last summer, and has enjoyed his most productive year in a while, helping the French side finish third and qualify for the Champions League. He scored 15 goals in 23 games, but is yet to extend his contract at Nice which expires in the summer, so could be on the move again

He further went to say that ‘no country is perfect; around the world we have seen and continue to see expressions of intra-national discontent. Indeed, not many Nigerians seem to know that the oft-quoted line about Nigeria being a “mere geographical expression” originally applied to Italy’ Osinbajo quoting late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, explained why he didn’t think a second Biafran War should happen, said: “We should have learnt from that first one, otherwise the deaths would have been to no avail; it would all have been in vain.”<br />

Introspection is probably what separates us from beasts. That ability to learn from history is perhaps the greatest defense from the avoidable pain of learning from experience, when history is a much gentler and kinder teacher. Indeed, the saying experience is the best teacher, is incomplete, the full statement of that Welsh adage is that experience is the best teacher for a fool. History is a kinder and gentler teacher. I was ten years old when my friend in primary school then, Emeka, left school one afternoon. He said his parents said they had to go back to East, war was about to start.<br />
<br />
I never saw Emeka again. My aunty Bunmi was married to a gentleman from Enugu, I cannot recall his name. But I recall the evening when my parents tried to persuade her and her husband not to leave for the East. She did, we never saw her again. I recall distinctly how in 1967, passing in front of my home on Ikorodu road almost every hour were trucks carrying passengers and furniture in an endless stream heading east. Many Ibos who left various parts of Nigeria, left friends, families and businesses, schools and jobs. Like my friend and aunty some never returned! But many died.<br />
<br />
The reasons for this tragic separation of brothers and sisters were deep and profound. So much has been said and written already about the “why’s and wherefores’’ and that analyses will probably never end. This is why I would rather not spend this few minutes on whether there was or was not sufficient justification for secession and the war that followed. The issue is whether the terrible suffering, massive loss of lives, of hopes and fortunes of so many can ever be justified. As we reflect on this event today, we must ask ourselves the same question that many who have fought or been victims in civil wars, wars between brothers and sisters ask in moments of reflection….“what if we had spent all the resources, time and sacrifice we put into the war, into trying to forge unity?<br />
<br />
What if we had decided not to seek to avenge a wrong done to us? What if we had chosen to overcome evil with good?’’ The truth is that the spilling of blood in dispute is hardly ever worth the losses. Of the fallouts of bitter wars is the anger that can so easily be rekindled by those who for good or ill want to resuscitate the fire. Today some are suggesting that we must go back to the ethnic nationalities from which Nigeria was formed. They say that secession is the answer to the charges of marginalization.<br />
<br />
They argue that separation from the Nigerian State will ultimately result in successful smaller States. They argue eloquently, I might add that Nigeria is a colonial contraption that cannot endure. This is also the sum and substance of the agitation for Biafra. The campaign is often bitter and vitriolic, and has sometimes degenerated to fatal violence. Brothers and sisters permit me to differ and to suggest that we’re greater together than apart. No country is perfect; around the world we have seen and continue to see expressions of intra-national discontent. Indeed, not many Nigerians seem to know that the oft-quoted line about Nigeria being a “mere geographical expression” originally applied to Italy.<br />
<br />
It was the German statesman Klemens von Metternich who dismissively summed up Italy as a mere geographical expression exactly a century before Nigeria came into being as a country. From Spain to Belgium to the United Kingdom and even the United States of America, you will find many today who will venture to make similar arguments about their countries. But they have remained together. The truth is that many, if not most nations of the world are made up of different peoples and cultures and beliefs and religions, who find themselves thrown together by circumstance. Nations are indeed made up of many nations. The most successful of the nations of the world are those who do not fall into the lure of secession. But who through thick and thin forge unity in diversity. Nigeria is no different; we are, not three, but more like three hundred or so ethnic groups within the same geographical space, presented with a great opportunity to combine all our strengths into a nation that is truly, to borrow an expression, more than the sum of its parts. Let me say that there is a solid body of research that shows that groups that score high on diversity turn out to be more innovative than less diverse ones. There’s also research showing that companies that place a premium on creating diverse workplaces do better financially than those who do not. This applies to countries just as much as it does to companies.<br />
<br />
The United States is a great example, bringing together an impressively diverse cast of people together to consistently accomplish world-conquering economic, military and scientific feats. It is possible in Nigeria as well. Instead of trying to flee into the lazy comfort of homogeneity every time we’re faced with the frustrations of living together as countrymen and women, the more beneficial way for us individually and collectively is actually to apply the effort and the patience to understand one another and to progressively aspire to create one nation bound in freedom, in peace and in unity. That, in a sense, should be the Nigerian Dream — the enthusiasm to create a country that provides reasons for its citizens to believe in it, a country that does not discriminate, or marginalize in any way. We are not there yet, but I believe we have a strong chance to advance in that direction. But that will not happen if we allow our frustrations and grievances to transmute into hatred. It will not happen if we see the media — television and radio and print and especially social media — as platforms for the propagation of hateful and divisive rhetoric.<br />
<br />
No one stands to benefit from a stance like that; we will all emerge as losers. Clearly our strength is in our diversity, that we are greater together than apart. Imagine for a moment that an enterprising young man from Aba had to apply for a visa to travel to Kano to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams, or that a young woman from Abeokuta had to fill immigration forms and await a verdict in order to attend her best friend’s wedding in Umuahia. Nigeria would be a much less colourful, much less interesting space, were that the case. Our frustrations with some who speak a different dialect or belong to a different religion must not drive us to forget many of the same tribe and faith of our adversaries who have shown true affection for us. My God-son is Somkele Awakalu, his father Awa Kalu, SAN, and I taught at the University of Lagos.<br />
<br />
My first book was dedicated to Somkele and my two other God-children. Chief Emmanuel Dimike is almost 80, he was my father’s friend and business associate in his sawmills in Lagos. Chief has been like a father. I see him most Sundays, he worships with me at the chapel. The individual affections and friendships we forge some even deeper than family ties, must remind us that unity is possible, that brotherhood across tribes and faiths is possible. Let me make it clear that I fully believe that Nigerians should exercise to the fullest extent the right to discuss or debate the terms of our existence. Debate and disagreement are fundamental aspects of democracy.<br />
<br />
We recognize and acknowledge that necessity. And today’s event is along those lines — an opportunity not merely to commemorate the past, but also to dissect and debate it. Let’s ask ourselves tough questions about the path that has led us here, and how we might transform yesterday’s actions into tomorrow’s wisdom. Indeed our argument is not and will never be that we should ‘forget the past’, or ‘let bygones be bygones’, as some have suggested. Chinua Achebe repeatedly reminded us of the Igbo saying that a man who cannot tell where the rain began to beat him cannot know where he dried his body. If we lose the past, we will inevitably lose the opportunity to make the best of the present and the future.<br />
<br />
In an interview years ago, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, explaining why he didn’t think a second Biafran War should happen, said: “We should have learnt from that first one, otherwise the deaths would have been to no avail; it would all have been in vain.” We should also be careful that we do not focus exclusively on the narratives of division, at the expense of the uplifting and inspiring ones. The same social media that has come under much censure for its propensity to propagate division, has also allowed multitudes of young Nigerians to see more of the sights and sounds of their country than ever before. And for every young Nigerian who sees the Internet as an avenue for spewing ethnic hatred, there is another young Nigerian who is falling in love or doing business across ethnic and cultural lines; a young Nigerian who looks back on his or her NYSC year in unfamiliar territory as one of the valued highlights of their lifetime.<br />
<br />
These stories need to be told as well. They are the stories that remind us that the journey to nationhood is not an event but a process, filled as with life itself with experiences some bitter, some sweet. The most remarkable attribute of that process is that a succeeding generation does not need to bear the prejudices and failures of the past. Every new generation can take a different and more ennobling route than its predecessors. But the greatest responsibility today lies on the leadership of our country. Especially but not only political leadership.<br />
<br />
The promise of our constitution which we have sworn to uphold is that we would ensure a secure, and safe environment for our people to live, and work in peace, that we would provide just and fair institutions of justice. That we would not permit or encourage discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, beliefs or other parochial considerations. That we would build a nation where no one is oppressed and none is left behind.<br />
<br />
These are the standards to which we must hold our leadership. We must not permit our leaders the easy but dangerous rhetoric of blaming our social and economic conditions on our coming together. It is their duty to give us a vision a pathway to make our unity in diversity even more perfect.</blockquote>

Arsenal took a fourth-minute lead through Alexis Sanchez in controversial circumstances when Aaron Ramsey, who was in offside position, decided against touching the ball, allowing the Chilean to surge forward and fire past Thibaut Courtois from close range.<br />

It was the first time that Chelsea had been behind in the FA Cup this season but Antonio Conte's side were lucky not to concede a second goal as Arsenal dominated the first-half.<br />
<br />
Gary Cahill cleared off the line on 15 minutes as Mesut Ozil went close to doubling Arsenal's lead, before a Danny Welbeck header struck the foot of Chelsea's post from a corner three minutes later with Aaron Ramsey unable to turn in the rebound.<br />
<br />
Chelsea looked off the pace and in the 29th minute Cahill was again required to clear off the line as Arsenal, on the counter-attack, went close through Welbeck. Soon after Granit Xhaka forced a good save from Courtois with a firm volley from outside the area.<br />
<br />
After the break Chelsea were able to get more of a footing in the game but were reduced to 10 men on 67 minutes when Victor Moses was shown a second yellow card for simulation.<br />
<br />
Despite being a man down Chelsea pulled level in the 76th minute when substitute Willian picked out Diego Costa in the box, allowing him to control with his chest and score.<br />
<br />
Chelsea's reprieve was short-lived though as another substitute, Olivier Giroud, crossed for Aaron Ramsey to head home in the 79th minute and restore Arsenal's deserved advantage.<br />
<br />
Mesut Ozil came close to adding a third in the closing stages when he struck the post having beaten Cesar Azpilicueta but, despite Chelsea's best efforts, Arsenal saw out the win.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Buhari left Abuja for London on May 10, to see his doctors for follow-up medical checks.<br />

The pictorial report showing the president with the children was released by Mr Bayo Omoboriowo, the president’s personal photographer.<br />

Omoboriowo captioned the report as “File photos of President Muhammadu Buhari and children on the occasion of Children’s Day 2017.<br />

“Let little children come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of God.”<br />
<br />
He added: “Pictures of the jolly grandfather and the little ones were taken at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />

One of the pictures showed the president carrying a child standing alongside the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.<br />
<br />
Other pictures showed Buhari in a relaxed mood with the children as one of them attempting to fix a cap on the president’s head.<br />

It would be recalled that Osinbajo on Friday met with school children in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he offered them gifts.<br />
<br />
Osinbajo also took group photos with the children as part of activities to mark the 2017 Children’s Day.<br />

Oluremi Tinubu, the Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, said the recent rescue of 82 abducted Chibok schoolgirls was proof of the commitment of the Federal Government to the well-being of the Nigerian child.<br />

<a name='more' id="more"></a>Tinubu said this on Saturday in Lagos in her message on the occasion the Children’s Day celebration marked annually on May 27.<br />
<br />
She expressed the hope that the remaining girls would be rescued soon and be reunited with their families.<br />
<br />
Tinubu also urged the government to provide food, shelter, affordable and accessible health care and education for those who had been displaced by insurgency.<br />
<br />
<br />
“This is your right and I hope that Nigeria can be better to provide you a whole world of opportunities ahead of you.<br />
<br />
“It is my hope that every one of you can be protected from violence in all its forms such as exploitation, abuse, trafficking, physical and humiliating punishment and harmful traditional practices among others.<br />
<br />
“However, you must not let the difficulty of the situation around you limit the greatness you have,” she said.<br />
<br />
She promised to continue to do her best to ensure better conditions, welfare and opportunities for children, women and the vulnerable in the society as the senator representing Lagos Central.<br />

“My commitment to you children has not waned.<br />
<br />
“You are Nigeria’s future and everything you do and learn is to prepare you for that great responsibility and equip you with all the necessary tools. Please make the most of it.<br />

Three Igbo socio-cultural associations yesterday faulted former President Olusegun Obasanjo appeal on Ndigbo to accept Nigeria as their country since, “there was enough bread for everybody,” saying that Obasanjo was one of the major ailments plaguing the country.<br />

They said that the only solution to the nation’s problems was immediate restructuring of the country into six regions.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo had Thursday asked Nigerians to beg Ndigbo to come back to the fold and stop agitations for a separate Republic of Biafra.<br />

However, the Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA; Igbo Youth Forum, IYM; and the Igbo Women Assembly, IWA, also, accused of Obasanjo of dancing around the issues causing disunity in the country as, according to them, he (Obasanjo) had once advised President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, calling them miscreants and fraudsters.<br />

According to them, it was on the strength of the said advice to Buhari that armed security agencies that mowed down innocent Igbo youths who were praying at a secondary school in Aba, Abia State, last year.<br />

AS Nigerian Children mark this year’s Children’s day today, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and a group of Civil Society Organization  (CSOs) yesterday called on all the states of the Federation to immediately begin the process of complete domestication and strict implementation of the Child Rights Act (CRA).<br />

This consensus was reached at a roundtable on “Advancing the Rights of the Nigerian Child” organized by the Office of the Senate President in commemoration of the 2017 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja.<br />

Personalities and CSOs that participated in the roundtable discussion included  the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kauwa Damina, representatives of the European Union (EU), The Malala Foundation,  United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Youths of Africa, National Democratic Institute (NDI), Civil Society Legislative and Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), and a cross section of teachers, students and pupils from primary and secondary schools in Abuja.<br />
<br />
On his part, Senate President Saraki who particularly wished Nigerian children a happy celebration, said that the event was meant to celebrate the resilience and perseverance of Nigerian children in overcoming the many obstacles of childhood, adding, “With this in mind, we celebrate the recent release of the 82 Chibok girls and take time to make constructive and critical evaluation of our commitment to the next generation.”<br />
<br />
Saraki who lamented that out of every five children, two currently live in poverty, while millions were in poor housing, crowded rooms, squalid conditions, on streets and affected by communal conflicts and insurgency. He said, “This type of beginning can hold a child back for the rest of his or her life. At just 22 months, a poor child’s skills already trail behind those of better-off toddlers. At age five, that poor child, even if he or she is very bright, will have been overtaken at school by a less talented but more privileged class mate.<br />
<br />
“Releasing these children from that trap, unleashing their potentials is critical if we are to create a society that is truly fair. A starting point is to review what protection our laws offer this demographic vulnerability.”<br />
<br />
The Senate President stated that the existing laws which offer special protection to children and other vulnerable groups in the country include the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, (VAPP Act, 2015) and the Child Rights Act (2003), adding, “These laws contain specific provisions to protect the Nigerian child. In order for our objective to be realized, much more needs to be done at all levels of State governance, but particularly at the local level, through meaningful cooperation and collaboration of all actors involved in the field of protecting children.   “The need remains to establish well-functioning Child Protection Units, provide quality social services for child protection and empower families in need.<br />
<br />
“The domestication of the Child Rights Act has been concluded in 24 States. Other States are examining it to see how it relates to local sensitivities and values, and thereby make the law more relevant and effective. It is my hope that the scrutiny of the Act will enhance its inclusiveness and the comprehensive protection and the Nigerian child.<br />
<br />
According to him, domestication and strict implementation of CRA and VAPP are critical for success in the battle to raise a future generation of national torch bearers.</div>

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has appealed to Nigerians, especially Muslims, to use the period of Ramadan for reflection on national challenges and join forces with the Buhari administration to overcome them.<br />

He gave the advice in his message to felicitate with the Muslim community in Nigeria as they join other faithful across the world to commence Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer.<br />

The Acting President implored Muslims to seek maximum benefits from the Ramadan period by replicating the teachings of the Holy Prophet in all their engagements, both private and public.<br />
<br />
He urged Muslims to use the Ramadan to renew their commitments to the virtues of love and peace taught by the Holy Prophet Muhammad, and also works towards achieving them.<br />

He noted that the period was one for spiritual perseverance, temperance, introspection, and retrospection with the Almighty Allah.<br />
<br />
The Acting President called on Nigerians to continue to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari and the nation in general.<br />
<br />
Osinbajo, while wishing the Muslim faithful blessed Ramadan, urged them to also remember the less privileged in the society during the special period.<br />

Muslims commenced fasting on Saturday following Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar’s III, declaration of May 27, as 1st Ramadan, 1438 AH, signifying the commencement of the annual long-month fast by Muslims.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports that Abubakar announced the sighting of the new moon in Sokoto, on Friday, in a broadcast.<br />
<br />
Abubakar said that the new moon was sighted in various states of the country including Kebbi, Lagos, Adamawa, Bauchi, Delta, Cross River and Benue.<br />
<br />
The Sultan stated that the reports of the sighting of the new moon were received from Muslim leaders and organizations across the nation.<br />
<br />
Abubakar further said that the reports were duly verified and authenticated by the National Moon Sighting Committee.<br />
<br />
He said that the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan also signified the end of Sha’aban, 1438AH.<br />
<br />
The Sultan, therefore, called on the Muslim Ummah to commence fasting accordingly.<br />
<br />
Abubakar implored the Muslim Ummah to devote themselves fully to worship throughout the Holy month.<br />
<br />
” We should also pray fervently for the blessings of Allah for President Muhammadu Buhari and others in leadership positions in Nigeria.<br />

“Mr Amaechi was personally indicted for stealing billions of public funds during his time in office, by a court-approved panel of inquiry set up by the state government.<br />
“The government will soon initiate a prosecutorial process against him in multiple jurisdictions, in Nigeria and abroad. And no award would have stopped that process.<br />
“We must confess that as a government, we wrestled with the moral horror of giving any kind of award to a man whose government was no better than a criminal syndicate.<br />

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of running a government of terror so as to cow the opposition.<br />

Specifically, he accused the president of going after Igbo leaders in the opposition by desperately scheming to silent them through repeated harassment and intimidation.<br />
<br />
The governor said the presidency in the efforts had turned the hitherto disciplined law enforcement agencies like the police and Department of State Services to agents of darkness that must muzzle the opposition at all cost.<br />
<br />
He said this in reaction to the reported raiding of the home of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by security agencies.<br />
<br />
Fayose said, “This is a calculated and sustained attempts to silent all the Igbo leaders that are not in the All Progressives Congress with Buhari ahead of the 2019 general elections because he knows it is a no go area for his party.<br />
<br />
“They have gone from the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kalu, to the Chairman of Capital Oil, Ifeanyi Ubah and now the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. This is the muzzling of democracy and it is time we saved our nation beyond party line from the hands of the terrorists.<br />

“Obviously it is too early to rate this government that has turned to government of terror using DSS and police as agents of terror. This certainly is not the change we bargained for.<br />

“We have lost this democracy to military junta of the past masquerading as democrats and we must rise as a people to defend it.<br />

“But I assure Nigerians that this period shall pass. Nigeria will once again be free from the hands of the agents of darkness and terror.”<br />

The Director General on Media and Publicity to the, Kingsley Fanwo has described as a political joke, calls from certain quarters for the resignation of the Governor over the INEC registration saga, insisting that the issue was “overblown to score political goals by opponents of the Governor”.<br />

Addressing journalists in Lokoja over the weekend, Fanwo said the issue was straightforward enough as the Governor welcomes the decision of INEC to cancel the latter registration.<br />
<br />
“It is unfortunate that some APC leaders have constituted themselves as opposition within their own party, simply because they have lost out in their bid to compromise the system and scam the people of Kogi State. Ametuo has turned himself to a diaspora Chairman who doesn’t know what is happening in Kogi State. He is running from his own shadows and has joined forces with those who want to pull the APC-led government in Kogi State down. He and his co-travelers have not come to terms with a new Kogi State that cannot be compromised. Under Governor Yahaya Bello, it will never be business as usual.<br />
<br />
“Change comes with pains. Beneficiaries of the filthy past will continue to resist the new order in Kogi State. They have attempted to incite the populace to insurrection but their plans hit the walls because the people are appreciative of the manner governance is delivered under the present administration. They tried to deceive the people about the hugely successful staff Verification exercise but it failed because the people have seen what we are doing with funds saved from the success of the exercise. The roads to their communities are under construction, they now have water, we are subsidizing healthcare, we are making education more attractive for our children and agriculture is taking the centre stage of our economic renaissance.<br />

“But because they want to be Governor in 2020 despite their unpardonable failings, they have continued to dance naked in marketplaces, attempting to scandalize the Governor and drag the name of the state in the mud, preaching against their own lifestyle and creating a false impression of the reality of today’s Kogi State. Governor Yahaya Bello is a man who is undaunted by the calculated faux against him and the state. To him, he is determined to write his name in gold”.<br />

The Governor’s spokesman said the State House of Assembly will not be blackmailed into “reversing the gains of the state”, urging “discredited and corrupt oil thieves to keep their billions and face the legal battles ahead of them” rather than venturing in “anti-people ventures that are not feasible in modern day Kogi State”.<br />

“The Governor will not resign. We have listened to INEC and we respect their decisions. Now is time for the Commission to fast-track the transfer of the PVC of the Governor to Kogi State from Abuja. Resignation is completely out of the options and the Governor will continue his good work for the people of Kogi State. They and their corrupt sponsors should wait till 2019.<br />

“The community of their oil sponsor had no electricity for years. But the Governor has restored electricity to the community to the delight of his people who were in darkness for years. To him, we have exposed his failings and hatred for his own people. But to us, government is only fulfilling its electioneering promises to the people. This we shall continue to do.<br />
<br />
“Governor Yahaya Bello met Kogi State in a deep mess. The people had lost confidence in their leaders. He came with hope, rolled up his sleeves and today, we are celebrating great achievements by the administration. We have better roads in Lokoja and many places across the state, we have restored sanity to our environment, we have many ongoing road projects, we have empowered thousands of youth and women through entrepreneurial training and we have repositioned our healthcare, tourism and educational sector. Governor Bello will continue to serve the people of Kogi State.<br />
<br />
“It is ridiculous for a person who has never worked in his life, who has never done any known contract and who was not born into a rich family but yet, controls cars worth hundreds of millions; to turn around and accuse another who was a successful civil servant, successful business magnate and a successful professional, of corruption. We know corruption will continue to fight back but we shouldn’t make Nigeria a laughing stock in the comity of nations.<br />
<br />
“When you look at the way our opponents celebrate insecurity in Kogi State, you will wonder if they genuinely love this state. How can you celebrate what was taking the lives of your people? It is high time Security agents invited them for questioning because they might be sponsoring some of these crimes to discredit government and scare investors from the state. We have turned the corners and we can beat our chest that we shall continue to serially defeat insecurity in Kogi State”.<br />

On the announcement by tertiary institutions managements on schools’ reopening, Fanwo said it was done after government had met most of the demands by the striking workers.<br />
<br />
“Government is concerned about the continued closure of the schools. We have met majority of their demands and we are sure they will soon go back to work. They are Kogites too who have the interests of our students at heart. Education is number one on the thematic areas the present administration is focusing and government will do everything within its resources to fund the sector and make it the steering of our drive to greatness.<br />
<br />
“Kogi people want the workers to return to work. We have lost ground as a result of the strike and we shall strive to put in place a permanent mechanism to stop future disagreements that could lead to strike. It is unhealthy to the future of our generation-next. We are currently turning some institutions to model schools across the state to lay a foundation for what we want the secondary schools to look like under the present administration. We are also driving academic activities in our schools with a strong ICT backbone to make our children highly competitive. We are not oblivious to the indispensability of education for development. It is the bulwark of the administration’s policy on development”.</div>

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Mr Segun Adewale, has expressed confidence that the party will do well in July 22 council poll.<br />

Adewale of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP acknowledged that internal problems within the party had caused some setbacks, but said the party would rise above its challenges for a strong showing.<br />
<br />
“The PDP is a strong party in the state. Agreed there are some problems here and there caused by some people for their personal interests, but the party will overcome all that and do well at the poll,” he said.<br />
<br />
Adewale said he had made overtures to the faction led by Moshood Salvador on the need to have a united party but that his efforts were not appreciated.<br />
<br />
He said the disagreement would not deter his faction from preparing well for the poll even as he said the door of peace was still open to the Salvador camp.<br />
<br />
Adewale said his faction conducted its primary in all the 20 local government area and 37 local council development areas on Friday and that it was largely peaceful.<br />
<br />
“We had our primary election on Friday and I can tell you that it was largely peaceful and successful.<br />
<br />
“Apart from Agege, Ikeja and Amuwo where we recorded some problems, the primaries went well and candidates emerged for the chairmanship and councillorship seats.<br />
<br />
“The successful conduct of our primary is a reflection of our determination and resolve to do well at the poll despite the odds.” he said.<br />
<br />
Adewale condemned the alleged holding of primary by some groups under the name of PDP, saying it was illegal.<br />
<br />
He said he was the authentic chairman of the state based on the Appeal Court judgement affirming Sherrif as national chairman, adding that any other primary outside his own was illegal.<br />
<br />
“I am the authentic Chairman of PDP in Lagos. If any group is holding any primary in the state under the name of the party, it is null and void as it is illegal,” he said.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Salvador faction of Sen Ahmed Makarfi Caretaker Committee has directed its aspirants to seek any other political platform apart from the PDP to contest the forthcoming poll.<br />
<br />
The Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Taofik Gani, said that the faction took the decision as reconciliation with Adewale faction was not yielding results.<br />
<br />
“Yes, we have directed our aspirants to seek any political parties of their choice for the election.<br />
<br />
“They are using parties temporarily for the election pending the resolution of Makarfi /Sheriff at the Supreme Court,” Gani said.<br />
<br />
Gani, however, said the faction would monitor and guide their aspirants while they contest on the platform of different political parties.<br />
<br />
LASIEC has fixed July 22 as the date of the council poll and July 29 for the run-off.<br />

She explained that she did not get any sign of the baby's arrival when she arrived Abakaliki until <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_174124629" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ"><span style="color: #222222;">2pm</span></span></span> when she started noticing some changes and decided to rush to any nearby hospital. The lady was full of praises for the governor and his wife for their kind gesture and prayed God to promote them to a higher level.</span></div>

I was was trying to go to hospital but when we were about to come out , there was big traffic and I gave birth there. They told me that governor and his wife gave my baby N1 million and gave her scholarship. I am so happy because of how God remembered me through the governor and his beautiful wife. I am thanking him and his wife and I am praying that God will elevate them more."</span></blockquote>
