There is no apprehension at all. People have no reason not to come out, because they are confident of the security,” he said.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEip43detV4Ah_EGH0V5ynN9GWEVAm9EczPnNycz-zWoZVwnW4R-KAgAIYE9NxBE66QdiYXQWLsvIQS8Mq9dGTQPKRZ9uPZYBC5VDtAvWUJLuowrxpmpdbFa7xaM_tooWAiMvLB3muX6GQqcue_mTXgGEBRtMUAx0DcGkg3QbCZCaBzb3qYrrArzjwQc=s750" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="420" data-original-width="750" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEip43detV4Ah_EGH0V5ynN9GWEVAm9EczPnNycz-zWoZVwnW4R-KAgAIYE9NxBE66QdiYXQWLsvIQS8Mq9dGTQPKRZ9uPZYBC5VDtAvWUJLuowrxpmpdbFa7xaM_tooWAiMvLB3muX6GQqcue_mTXgGEBRtMUAx0DcGkg3QbCZCaBzb3qYrrArzjwQc=w400-h224" width="400" /></a></div> <br /> <p>The Nigerian Bar Association has continued to fume over the invasion of the Abuja home of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili, by agents of the Federal Government last week.</p> <p>The President of the NBA, Olumide Akpata, at a special press briefing in Lagos on Friday, described the operation as egregious and the gathering of an ominous cloud over the judiciary, saying it was reminiscent of how operatives of the Department of State Services in 2016 raided the homes of seven judges and how a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen (retd.), was “illegally removed from office,” ahead of the 2019 general elections.</p> <p>Akpata vowed that the NBA would stop at nothing to ensure that those behind the latest operation were unmasked and punished, to put a stop to “the assault on the judiciary.”</p> <p>He said the NBA would not accept the flurry of denials by the Attorney General of the Federation and security agencies that they knew nothing about the operation.</p> <a name='more' id="more"></a> <p>He said the NBA also rejected the panel being set up by the AGF to investigate the matter because the AGF himself has a case to answer and he could not be a judge in his own case.</p> <p>He, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to set up an independent panel to unravel the actors behind the invasion of Justice Odili’s home.</p> <p>Akpata said, “We are calling on the President, the head of the executive arm of government, to set up an independent panel of inquiry, to look into this assault on the judiciary, which is another arm of government because there is a dark cloud hanging and all fingers are pointing at the executive as being behind this action.</p> <p>“It behoves Mr President to step in immediately, to set up this panel of inquiry, which, at the minimum, will have a judicial officer and the NBA involved so that we can get to the bottom of this issue and ask: who gave that instruction?”</p> <p>Akpata said the NBA would also do its own housekeeping, vowing that, “In the event that we find that any lawyer was involved in this unfortunate incident, that lawyer will be subjected to our disciplinary mechanisms and that lawyer will definitely face the music.”</p> <p>The NBA President said, “We note that the Attorney General of the Federation has reportedly agreed to make himself available for investigation. This is consistent with the position of the National Executive Council of the NBA, to the effect that the Attorney General definitely has questions to answer. However, he cannot subject himself to a panel that he sets up. This is why the panel to be set up by the President is very necessary.</p> <p>“If the Attorney General is found culpable, then as a lawyer, we will take him before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee; because if indeed, he is found to have given the directives that led to the invasion of the home of the Justice of the Supreme Court, then he is not fit to hold the office he occupies presently and continue to be the recipient of the privileges the profession has accorded to him.”</p> <p>Asked by a journalist if the NBA has the power to discipline the AGF, Akpata added, “There is a mechanism, and that is for us to bring him before the LPDC and what does the LPDC do? What is the ultimate sanction, amongst others? He can be stopped from practising law. What does the LPPC do, amongst others? The LPPC can strip him of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and also the Body of Benchers can reconsider his life membership of that body. So, without mincing words, those are the steps that the NBA can take.”</p> <p>The NBA President said action was also being taken against the Abuja magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, who issued the search warrant leading to the invasion of Justice Odili’s home.</p> <p>“Questions must be asked of the quality and sufficiency of the materials placed before His Worship before issuing the search warrant in the first place. The NBA National Executive Council believes that even on a cursory reading of the materials placed before His Worship, there is a prima facie evidence that the search warrant ought not to have been issued in the circumstance,” he said.</p>

We are happy that he is gone and gone forever,” Fayemi said.</p> <p>However, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Ademola Adesoji berated the action of the staff, adding that majority of the staff and students of the UNIOSUN love the former VC.</p> <p>Adesoji recounted that Prof Laboode with his exceptional performances earned him life patron honour from Students Union, gifts from the alumni association and commendations from the staff of the institution.</p> <p>He said, “Students and staff of UNIOSUN love Pro Labode. The student union gave him an award and made him their patron, the Alumni also gave him gifts and lauded him for performing excellently.”</p>

We live with everybody with different faith. Among them are political parties, backings from top politicians, popularity among the people, religious denominations, antecedents and even financial standings of the individual candidates.</p> <p>The three most popular political parties in the state; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are also fielding very widely accepted candidates in the persons of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Mr Valentine Ozigbo and Senator Andy Uba.</p> <p>On the other hand, Soludo, who is running on the platform of APGA already has some advantages. His party – APGA is currently in power in the state. He is also lucky to have been endorsed and vigorously campaigned for by the incumbent governor, Obiano.</p> <p>Uba on the other hand also has the luck of running on the platform of the ruling party in the centre, the APC. Many believe he will use such status to either manipulate or garner votes.</p> <p>The dominance of religious politics is a strong factor in the state. The Catholic and Anglican churches dominate the politics of the state, with the Catholic having an upper hand. This has brought silent rancour that many candidates have leveraged to push their aspiration. While Andy Uba is of the Anglican stock, Soludo and Ozigbo are Catholics, just as all three candidates are from same local government area, Aguata.</p> <p>There have been news of Andy Uba being the only candidate of Anglican stock, and will be using the opportunity to curry favour.</p> <p>The antecedents of all the three leading candidates may also make or mar their chances, considering that the people may vote according to how relevant a candidate was, as at the time of holding a past office, which two of the candidates among the three are known to have held offices. But one area where all the candidates seem to have strength is financial stability. Though some of the candidates are far more accomplished than others, they cannot also be denied the right of being money bags in their own right.</p> <p><b>Prof Chukwuma Soludo</b></p> <p>Strength – He is the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which is seen to be a dominant political party in the state. He is highly popular in the state, and his antecedents at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where he worked as the governor and helped to turn things around in the banking sector is one of his major strengths. His education, cerebral nature and strength of ideas are also to his advantage. He has a cult following among people of all levels, age and status.</p> <p>Weakness – The only weakness which Soludo has, which in fact is also part of his strength, is the avowed resolution of the incumbent governor to deliver him as the next governor. Though this is also his major strength, his opponents use it against him, saying that such may amount to bringing back god-fatherism, which has long been done away with in the state.</p> <p><b>Mr Valentine Ozigbo</b></p> <p>Strength – Being a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is one of Ozigbo’s greatest strengths. Though many believe he is new in politics, having been a banker and business mogul all along, his ability to wrestle power away from known names in the party during the primaries is his biggest strength, such that he is today rated ahead of other candidates. He is known to be very cerebral in thinking, and also very innovative. His age, and religious denomination (Catholicism) are all to his advantage.</p> <p>Weakness – Ozigbo is not known to have any visible weakness, as he has discharged himself creditably since he arrived on the Anambra political turf. However, the support he enjoys from the former governor of the state, Mr Peter Obi has been misinterpreted as that of a godfather and godson relationship, and has been used many times over to taunt him as one who is taking Anambra back to the era of political god-fatherism.</p> <p><b>Senator Andy Uba</b></p> <p>Strength – He is running on the platform of the national ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and has a lot of bigwig politicians behind him from across Nigeria, and people in the presidency. Uba is not in short supply of money to prosecute his election, and has successfully wooed most prominent politicians in the state, including top office holders to his party. What is Uba’s greatest strength is the fact that he is a great political thinker, and as always his taciturn self, he never boasts, nor openly discloses his political strategies, until he plays them. He is an Anglican, and considering the fact that Catholics have been dominant in the politics of the state, it may be the turn of his church to rally round him and produce a governor.</p> <p>Weakness – Uba has a past about Anambra politics that is not so palatable to the ears, and has been severally accused of being responsible for the misfortune that befell Anambra between 2000 and 2006, when public properties were destroyed, and a former governor of the state kidnapped and mandated to resign from office. He is not also gifted with oratory, so, whatever his plans for the state are; he finds it difficult conveying them in simple and understandable language.</p> <p>Although the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has called off its planned sit-at-home exercise, today’s election is likely to witness a low turnout due to the ongoing insecurity in the southeast region.</p>

Ojo or anyone for that matter.</p> <span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span> <p><br /></p> <p>”All property and assets owned by the Vice President have been publicly declared.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>”Also, the Vice President has never spoken to the Governor of Lagos State or any other official of the State Government regarding the unsealing of the said building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, which subsequently collapsed. He has, indeed, never acted to influence any other regulatory action on the collapsed building, or any other building for that matter, in Lagos State.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Osinbajo further explained that he has no interest and has never had any interest, in the land, the building or development.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>”The wickedness and viciousness of a lie that seeks to utilise a tragedy where so many people have lost their lives, even as rescue efforts are ongoing, and in wanton disregard to the feelings and untold grief of their loved ones for political gain, reveals a dangerous desperation, as well as the heartlessness of the perpetrators of such despicable lies.” the statement reads in part.’</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The Vice President added that he has referred the ‘disgraceful’ publication to his lawyers for prompt legal action.</p>

Almost every election in Nigeria is accompanied by violence, ballot box snatching, vote buying, outright disruption of the process and in some cases, the intimidation of ordinary citizens who simply want to select a leader that will govern them.</p> <p>“This violence has gone beyond just the period of election. Every day we hear stories of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and in most cases, outright criminality. This ugly trend continues to threaten the peace, security and stability of our dear country. The question is when will all this stop? How can we work together to ensure peace and stability both during and after the election cycle?</p> <p>“We the members of the National Peace Committee have come to Anambra State to support a peaceful electoral process. We cherish Anambra State, and we cherish the peace and unity of Nigeria. Most importantly, we want to contribute our own quota to see that the governorship election in Anambra State is devoid of violence.</p> <p>“We call on candidates, their parties and supporters to accept the outcome of the vote as long as it is adjudged to be free, fair and credible. In the letter and spirit of the Accord, any aggrieved party should not resort to violence, but follow a judicial process.</p> <p>“Therefore, the signing of the Peace Accord today (Thursday) is not a mere exercise. It is a clarion call for all the candidates and the political parties to commit themselves to a peaceful process,” the former Head of State added.</p> <p>Also, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu said the commission has concluded plans to ensure a hitch-free election while urging the parties to adhere to the Peace Accord and ensure that the election is conducted without any acrimony.</p> <p>He said: “The INEC is ready to organise a hitch-free election. The focus of the NPC was initially for the presidential election but having played a major role in a free, fair and credible elections in Edo and Ondo, we called your support for the Anambra election on Saturday and we are happy they responded.</p> <p>“We are also hopeful that this election will pass on without hiccups. We hope the political parties will adhere to the peace accord so that we can have a peaceful election and country,” the INEC boss added.</p>

Their days are always numbered.</p> <p>“They will go to jail one day. The point, of course, is that what is the point of making money when you can’t sleep well at night.</p> <p>“But you must find out about the support that is available either from the private sector or public sector. For example, the Federal Government has established a N75 billion National Youth Investment Fund. This provides financial support for small businesses in any field.”</p>

Its damage to the economy of the South East is already registered as a major disaster.</p> <p>“IPOB’s plans to frustrate the Governorship election in Anambra State this weekend must be resisted.”</p> <p>IPOB had ordered a sit-at-home starting from November 5th if its leader, Nnamdi Kanu is not released.</p> <p>While the sit-at-home starts on November 5th, the governorship election will hold on Saturday.</p> <p>However, NEF also urged the government to ensure that the trial of Kanu proceeds in accordance with the law.</p> <p>The forum said those calling for preferential treatment for Kanu are inviting threats.</p> <p>“The on-going trial of its leader should proceed in accordance with the laws of the land, and elites from the region who demand that he is accorded special treatment in return for peace should know that they are merely inviting more threats on the people they should help to protect,” NEF said.</p>

But the duo started to hit me hard. I began to shout on top of my voice for help.</p> <p>“When my voice went higher, they ran out and students tried to pursue after them but when they brandished their gun, the students also became afraid and ran back, giving them room to escape into the nearby bush.</p> <p>“But during the scuffle in my office, their car key fell off which I picked and handed over to the University security unit.”</p>

Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and a former House of Representatives member from Oyo State, Hon. Taofek Arapaja, for the position of National Deputy Chairmanship at the Saturday convention.</p> <p>All efforts by the only PDP Governor from the region, Mr. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and other stakeholders to also unite the umbrella family aftermath of the Zonal Convention early this year, proved abortive.</p> <a name='more' id="more"></a> <p>But Senator Olujimi, one of the principal actors in the affairs of the party in the region, and Minority Leader of the 8th Nigerian Senate, argued that too much intelligence was responsible for the crisis in the region, expressing disappointment that the only Governor from the region was not being respected.</p> <p>“The problem of the South West is that, we have too many educated people and we have too many people who are extremely intelligent, and you know when you have intelligent people, you will definitely must have problems and they don’t find it necessary to line up behind their only Governor in the zone and that is a thing that hunts all of us.</p> <p>“Because we have been in that situation before and we lined up behind the only known Governor we had in the zone. I believe after this convention, we will be able to throw everything down again on the table.</p> <p>“What has happened to us is what happens to people that know too much and do not believe in God, because when you believe in God, you must know that all these things will come to an end one day.</p> <p>“So, I believe going forward, the South West, the Governor will have to be the father and forget everything that has been done to him, and bring us all back together”, she said.</p> <p>Speaking further on what to do to capture more states for PDP in the region, Senator Olujimi, who chaired the protocol subcommittee of the national convention, said the leaders of the party would need to mend more fences and kill the “cobra” that is inhabiting the cracked walls.</p> <p>She said, “fences are really many, I don’t lie to myself. Some of them, we have snakes and cobras living in them and you know before you mend such fences, you must first kill the cobra and the black mamba and the scorpions and then you can now mend fences.</p> <p>“But I know that God, being with us, will be able to also forge the unity that the North has shown us, that, that zone is formidable enough to be able to say go and sit down, this is where we are going and everyone will go there and that’s the way to go in Nigeria.</p> <p>“We should be able to balance issues, we should be able to balance power and except we balance power, we won’t be able to move forward. I believe we will be able to work as a team if we keep working, it is work in progress.</p> <p>“We are expecting that we will do very well. At least, we are expecting 3 additional states to be won for PDP in South West”.</p>

He came with about 22 people all the way from Ibafo (Ogun State) to work here; labourers, bricklayers, welders, about 22 different guys that came together with him to work on the project.</p> <a name='more' id="more"></a> <p><br /></p> <p>“Till now, out of those that have been rescued, we’ve not seen any of those 22 and he himself is still there because we learnt that yesterday, at break time, he came out to eat but as he was about washing his hands to eat, he was summoned by one of his bosses and he went back inside but about five to ten minutes later,, the collapsed and he was trapped.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“He is still there now and we pray that God will have his way upon those still there.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“As a church, we prayed all through yesterday night and we’re still believing that there is nothing God cannot do because we know that people are still many there, they said they are over 50.</p> <p> </p> <p>“The ones they’ve rescued are not up to ten, definitely we are still expecting more people to be rescued,” he added praying God will bring more survivors out.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Since the rescue operations on the collapsed building on Gerard Road began, no rescued person has been identified and they have been taken to an undisclosed hospital.</p>

Experience has shown that these funds are also used to undermine economic, social and political stability through funding of terrorism and terrorist-related activities.</p> <p>“As a responsible member of the comity of nations, Nigeria is committed to meeting the global standards for the integrity of the financial system and preventing it from being used as a safe haven for the movement of illicit funds.”</p> <p>The minister also disclosed that criminals had devised means of concealing ownership of assets illegally acquired, adding that they were also investing their funds in legitimate business which he said was affecting the trust in the financial system.</p> <p>He said, “Criminals use various techniques and mechanisms to obscure the ownership of illicitly acquired assets and; introducing illegally obtained funds into the stream of legitimate commerce allows criminals to profit from their illegal activities, taints the financial system and erodes public trust in the integrity of the system. </p>
