Popular child star, Benita Okojie who was recently pictured rocking her second baby bump has welcomed a baby girl with her sweetheart, Olawale Adeyina.<br />

Recall that the couple walked down the aisle on November 26, 2016, and already have a son from the union.<br />
<br />
The excited mother shared news of her childbirth through her social media platform, adding that the baby is indeed very healthy and a miracle baby girl.<br />

Veteran actor, Emeka Enyiocha has revealed that nudity is more prevalent in the Nigerian music industry than in Nollywood.<br />

Enyiocha speaking in a chat with newsmen stated that the music videos released these days can be compared to soft porn.<br />

“Nudity is prevalent in the music industry, not in Nollywood. There is practically no music video you would see today without someone being semi- nude in it. The musicians just do their thing, but I don’t know if there is a way they can cut (reduce) it. For Nollywood, the Censors’ Board is there to regulate what they do. Right now, our music videos can be compared to porn.”<br />

A man, identified as Mohammed Babangida, 30 years old has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 9-year-old girl in Adamawa State.<br />
<br />
The man was picked up for the offence by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), following intelligence report from residents.<br />
<br />
Babangida, who responded to questions from newsmen, said he had given the girl N50 and N20 on two occasions and it was on the third occasion when he gave her N50 that he attempted to rape her.<br />

“I started but I did not finish,” he said, adding that someone knocked on the door and that was how it ended.<br />
<br />
He asked for leniency, saying, “I have not done it before and I will not try it again. I have wife and children. Government should pity me and not ruin my family.<br />

“I want to beg for forgiveness as a married man with children based in Bauchi; I don’t want this shameful thing to wreck my family.”

The running mate to Gov. Yahaya Bello, Chief Edward Onoja in the forthcoming Nov. 16, governorship election, would be sworn in on Saturday as the new Deputy Governor of the state.<br />

NAN reports that the seven-member Judicial Panel of Enquiry was set up by the State Chief Judge, Justice Nasir Ajanah, on Aug. 26 to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Achuba had earlier submitted its report to the House.<br />
<br />
Chairman of the panel, Barrister John Baiyeshea, flanked by six other members of the panel, submitted the report to the Speaker, Prince Matthew Kolawole, at plenary.<br />
<br />
Baiyeshea said the committee members had done their best, “We have done the best we know how to do according to law and evidence presented to us.<br />

<br />
“The report is in three volumes; volume one contains all documents forwarded to us by the Chief Judge that he received from the assembly, and additional reports made available to the committee.<br />
<br />
“Volume two contains the evidences giving during the proceeding and volume three contains reviews of the committee and recommendations,” he said.<br />
<br />
The chairman, however, declined to reveal the position of the committee, saying doing so would amount to violation of constitutional provisions that guided the setting up of the panel.<br />
<br />
Receiving the report, the Speaker, Prince Matthew Kolawole, expressed appreciation to the chief Judge for appointing men of proven integrity as members of the panel.<br />
<br />
Kolawole explained that the task of ensuring good governance required collective efforts of all, and thanked the members for the timely presentation of the report.<br />
<br />
“We shall go into the reports thoroughly, look into the recommendations and do justice to it,” saying that the committee had gone into the annals of history in Nigeria as the first to perform a thorough work devoid of interferences.<br />
<br />
In his remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Mohammad (APC- Ankpa I), said the exercise followed due process and thanked everyone for being responsive to the development of Kogi.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that the committee which was inaugurated on Aug. 26 with a 90-day duration within which to complete the assignment and submit it’s report, completed the job in 49 days. (NAN)

The funding positions of seven commercial banks are inadequate, the result of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) stress test released on Thursday, has shown.<br />
<br />
The financial stability report signed by CBN Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Kelvin Amugo, showed that in the less than 30-day period analysis, seven banks were not adequately funded, while in the 31 to 90-day period, nine banks had funding gaps.<br />
<br />
The report, however, said the cumulative position for the industry showed an excess of N4.8 trillion assets over liabilities.<br />
<br />

The seven banks were, however, not named by the apex bank. Nigeria has 24 banks.<br />
<br />
The report, which covered the period ended December 2018, showed that six banks accounted for 82 per cent (N252.00 billion) of total placements and 86 per cent (N 266 billion) of total takings, of which 71 per cent (N190 billion) was provided by the top four placers of funds.<br />
<br />
The stress test result revealed that, after a one-day run scenario, the liquidity ratio for the industry declined to 34.69 per cent from the 51.87 per cent pre-shock position and to 17.55 and 13.48 per cent after a five-day and cumulative 30-day scenarios.<br />
<br />
The result also revealed that, under five-day and cumulative 30-day run scenarios on the banking industry, liquidity shortfalls declined to N1.58 trillion and N1.98 trillion.<br />
<br />
The results of the stress test of default in exposure to the oil and gas sector showed that the banking industry could withstand up to 50.00 per cent default as the post-shock Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) remained at 10.24 per cent.<br />
<br />
The results of the stress tests on the net position of interest sensitive instruments showed that the banking industry would maintain a stable solvency position to interest rate shock of up to 1000 basis points downward shift in yield curve as the post-shock CAR declined marginally from 15.26 to 13.41 per cent.<br />
<br />
The industry pre-shock assets and liabilities maturity profile at end-December 2018 revealed that the shorter end of the market less than 90 day buckets were adequately funded.<br />
<br />
Contagion risk from the unsecured transactions in the interbank market was moderate at end- December 2018. The results of simulated conditional counter-party default from unsecured interbank loans indicated low risk as the banks, except two, maintained post-shock CAR above 10 per cent.<br />
<br />
The Implied Cash Flow Analysis (ICFA) assessed the ability of the banking system to withstand unanticipated substantial withdrawals of deposits, short-term wholesale and long-term funding over five days and cumulative 30 days, with specific assumptions on fire sale of assets.<br />
<br />
The test assumed gradual average outflows of 3.8, 5.0 and 1.5 per cent of total deposits, short-term funding and long-term funding respectively, over a 5-day period and a cumulative average outflow of 22.0, 11.0 and 1.5 per cent of total deposits, short-term funding and long-term funding respectively, on a 30-day balance. It also assumed that the assets in Table 3.10 would remain unencumbered after a fire sale.<br />
<br />
Also, reported cases of fraud and forgeries by banks increased to 25,029 at end-December 2018 from 20, 774 at end-June 2018. However, the total amount involved decreased to N18.94 billion at end- December 2018 from N19.77 billion at end-June 2018.<br />
<br />
Similarly, actual losses declined to N2.21 billion at end-December 2018 from N12.10 billion in the first half of 2018.The total number of reported fraud cases in OFIs stood at 754 at end-December 2018, while the actual loss of N120.98 million was recorded during the same period.<br />
<br />
Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and mobile channels recorded the highest incidence of fraud. To tackle this trend, bank customers were continually sensitised on safe banking practices while banks were encouraged to implement strong authentication controls and carry out comprehensive infrastructure risk assessments.<br />
<br />
A total of 1,612 complaints from consumers of financial services were received in the period under review, indicating an increase of 173 complaints or 12.02 per cent over the 1,439 received in the first half of 2018. Of this number, 1,602 complaints or 99.38 per cent were against banks, while 10 complaints or 0.62 per cent were against OFIs. The complaints were in various categories, such as Excess/Unauthorised charges, Frauds, Guarantees, Dispense errors, Funds Transfers.<br />
<br />
A total of 1,496 complaints were successfully resolved or closed in the period under review, compared with 4,723 in the first half of 2018, indicating a decrease of 3,227 or 215.71 per cent. The D-SIBs accounted for 63.80 per cent of the industry total assets of N35.10 trillion and 65.23 per cent of the industry total deposit of N21.73 trillion as well as 66.00 per cent of the industry total loans of N15.34 trillion.<br />

The examination revealed that the D-SIBs were largely in compliance with the regulatory requirements, including capital adequacy and liquidity ratios. The average CAR for the D-SIBs stood at 19.82 per cent, while liquidity ratio stood at 46.29 per cent. There was an improvement in non-performing loans ratio from 11.31 per cent at end-June 2018 to 9.82 per cent at end- December 2018.

Lagos State Government has alerted residents on the rise of sea water level resulting in the inability of the lagoon to discharge water into the ocean.<br />

The development, it said, is causing backflow into the drainage channels.<br />

A statement by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, however assured officials are working on different measures to remove the constriction and blockades that would allow easy passage for the resultant flooding.<br />

Some members of the armed forces and other security outfits are to benefit from the consequential adjustment of workers’ salaries agreed by the federal government and labour on Friday.<br />

Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige told reporters in Abuja after the signing of the deal that the new structure would take immediate effect.<br />

The Lagos State Government has advised residents not panic over the recent reported outbreak of the infectious monkey pox disease in the state.<br />
<br />
The Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, cautioned residents on Friday at the bio-security update meeting on the situation report of the disease in the state.<br />
<br />
Abayomi revealed that three suspected cases of monkey pox were reported by health facilities in the past one month, adding that the cases tested positive for the infectious disease as revealed by reports of laboratory investigation, according the News Agency of Nigeria.<br />

This came after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had in its latest report on monkey pox revealed that Lagos continues to lead cases of the viral disease in the country with 29 total reported cases and 11 confirmed cases spanning January to September, 2019.<br />
<br />
But the commission, while speaking on the suspected cases in a statement, said, “The patients were treated at the specialised infectious disease isolation centre of Mainland Hospital, Yaba, and they have since recovered and (been) discharged.<br />
<br />
“The close contacts and family members of these cases were actively monitored for 21 days for any development of signs and symptoms of monkey pox and none of these contacts developed any symptoms.” Abayomi said in a statement.<br />
<br />
He said that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, through the Centre for Disease Control, was maintaining relevant surveillance activities in all local government areas to prevent an outbreak of the disease.<br />
<br />
He advised health workers to ensure they take universal safety precautions when dealing with patients, saying that appropriate personal protective clothing must be worn when attending to cases of contagious infectious diseases.<br />
<br />
He also advised that precaution should be taken when coming into contact with wildlife such as monkeys or rodents, especially if such animals exhibited features of the disease.<br />
<br />
Abayomi added, “Health workers are advised to observe universal safety precautions when dealing with patients and report any suspected case of monkey pox to the medical officer of health in their local government or the Directorate of Disease Control, through these lines: 08023169485 and 08023377487.”

Nineteen ministries will spend a total of N416m on cleaning and fumigation services in 2020.<br />

The sum is meant for the headquarters of the ministries alone, excluding the different agencies and parastatals under them.<br />
<br />
The budgeted sum is contained in the details of the 2020 Appropriation Bill that President Muhammadu Buhari presented to a joint session of the National Assembly last week.<br />
<br />
The item was contained under the subhead of “Other Services-General” of the 19 ministries.<br />

The allocation for cleaning and fumigation services is apart from the provision made for the maintenance of the building and other maintenance services in the ministries’ budgets.<br />

Only the Ministry of Information and Culture, Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Women Affairs as well as the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development do not have distinct budgets for cleaning and fumigation.<br />
<br />
Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment will be spending N52.766m on cleaning and fumigation; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will spend N48m; Ministry of Petroleum Resources will spend N47.54m; Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning will spend N46.52m; while Ministry of Defence will spend N32.97m.<br />
<br />
Ministry of Environment will spend N24.78m; Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs will spend N20.92m; Ministry of Works and Housing will spend N20.38m; Ministry of Justice –N19.87m; Ministry of Communication Technology N15.77m; Ministry of Aviation –N15m; and Ministry of Power –N15m.<br />
<br />
Others are Ministry of Health –N12m; Ministry of Education –N11.16m; Ministry of Youth and Sports Development –N10.26m; Ministry of Labour and Employment –N7.9m; Ministry of Interior –N7.18m; Ministry of Special Duties –N6.15m; and Ministry of Transport –N2m.<br />

The State House Lagos Liaison Office also budgeted N2.7m for the same item while the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals budgeted N2m for it.<br />

The National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, budgeted N5m for it while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission allocated N6.67m to the same item.

The amount of electricity generated by the nation’s power plants fell below 3,000 megawatts on Friday, dropping by over 600MW in 24 hours.<br />

The power stations were forced to either shut down some of their units or reduce their generation largely as a result of low load demand by distribution companies, worsening the blackout being experienced by millions of customers across the country.<br />

Total power generation dropped to 2,915.6MW as of 6am on Friday from 3,590MW on Thursday, data from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator showed.<br />
<br />
A report from the system operator showed that a total of 2,401.9MW generation capacity was idle on Wednesday as a result of low load demand by Discos while 115MW was unutilised because of line constraints.<br />
<br />
Nine power plants, including five built under the National Integrated Power Project, did not generate any megawatt of electricity as of 6am on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
The affected plants are Afam IV & V, Alaoji NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, Omotosho NIPP, Gbarain NIPP, Sapele NIPP, AES IPP and ASCO IPP and Trans-Amadi IPP.<br />
<br />
The nation generates the bulk of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total.<br />
<br />
The system operator put the nation’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation who was sacked from office, Babachir Lawal, has said Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress is in good standing to become the next president of Nigeria.<br />

He said Tinubu possesses the qualities of a good modern President to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.<br />

Babachir, who stated this in Yola, Adamawa State, in an interview with some select journalists, also supported power rotation to the South.<br />

“Bola Tinubu is my friend of many years. Buhari is my big boss. Bola Tinubu without prejudice that he’s my friend, will make a good president. Other issues notwithstanding, he (Tinubu) will make a good modern president because the presidency these days is scientific. Nigerians, by convention, seem to have agreed that there should be rotation of the presidency.”<br />

On Igbo presidency, Babachir, however said there had always been a notion that the North was preventing an Igbo person from becoming the president.<br />

“But they have not been working together to actualise an Igbo presidency,” he said.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has assured that the governorship poll in Bayelsa State on November 16 will be concluded on the first ballot.<br />

Yakubu gave the assurance during a two-day working visit to Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa, where he met with traditional rulers, political parties, security agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the media and other stakeholders.<br />
<br />
“In 2015, elections were disrupted in six of the eight councils. In southern Ijaw, we couldn’t deploy our officials due to massive shooting. So, only one council had no problem because election there was conclusive and results declared.<br />
<br />
“I am confident that this time around, elections will be conducted peacefully and conclusively on the first ballot,” he stated. According to the INEC boss, the Bayelsa visit and the decision to meet with the stakeholders are part of efforts in ensuring that the election is violence-free.<br />

Maintaining that traditional rulers play crucial role in peaceful and credible polls, Yakubu however warned that certain actions and utterances lead to breach of peace during the electoral process.<br />

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation who was sacked from office, Babachir Lawal, has said Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress is in good standing to become the next president of Nigeria.<br />

He said Tinubu possesses the qualities of a good modern President to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.<br />

Babachir, who stated this in Yola, Adamawa State, in an interview with some select journalists, also supported power rotation to the South.<br />

He said by 2023, power rotation would be one of the legacies President Buhari would be leaving behind among several others.<br />

Babachir, while speaking about the chances of the South-East to produce the President, dismissed the chances of an Igbo politician getting the nominations of one of the major political party because politicians from the region had yet to reach an agreement.<br />

Other issues notwithstanding, he (Tinubu) will make a good modern president because the presidency these days is scientific. Nigerians, by convention, seem to have agreed that there should be rotation of the presidency.”<br />

On Igbo presidency, Babachir, however said there had always been a notion that the North was preventing an Igbo person from becoming the president.<br />

“But they have not been working together to actualise an Igbo presidency,” he said.

Members of the armed forces and other security outfits are to benefit from the consequential adjustment of workers’ salaries agreed by the federal government and labour on Friday.<br />

Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige told reporters in Abuja after the signing of the deal that the new structure would take immediate effect.<br />
<br />
He said: That the agreement reached with organised labour on consequential adjustment of salaries for workers. Ngige said that because the security personnel are not members of the civil service, their adjustments would be communicated to them through the appropriate channels.<br />

Acting Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folashade Yemi- Esan and Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige signed on behalf of the federal government while President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba and the Chairman Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Simon Anchaver (JNPSNC) signed for organised labour.<br />
<br />
Ngige said that full implementation of the new national minimum wage law takes immediate effect. “It is my pleasure to report to you that the various conciliatory meetings that we instituted since the ninth, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and today (yesterday) had yielded the desired fruit.<br />
<br />
This morning we concluded all our negotiations and produced a Memorandum of Terms of Settlement from the conciliation.<br />
<br />
“The terms of settlement is in relation to the consequential adjustment of other wages following the new national minimum wage of N30, 000 as enshrined in the national minimum wage Act 2019.<br />
<br />
For these meetings, I acted as chief conciliator ably assisted by my Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo.<br />
<br />
“Today, we have put an end to all the negotiations, we deliberated and we have arrived at an agreement. “The consequential adjustments/ increases agreed upon for now are as follows.<br />
<br />
We have the group one personnel or what we call Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS). The meeting agreed, having reviewed the increase in the lowest paid person in this wage structure at N30,000 from Grade Level one Step one that the grade level 07 officers should move up by 23.2 percent in their wages.

A fuel tanker was seen burning along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday morning.<br />
<br />
According to a Twitter user, Jojo Amiegbe, who shared the video of the burning tanker on the social media platform, the tanker was burning just before Redeemed Camp on the Lagos-bound traffic side of the road.<br />
<br />
In the video, the presence of emergency services was not seen.<br />
<br />
The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the tanker fire.<br />
<br />
This is the third fire incident involving tankers this Friday.<br />
<br />

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described Wednesday Onitsha tanker explosion that claimed lives as a terrorist attack.<br />
<br />
It said nobody should be deceived that such incidents were mere accidents, insisting that it was designed to exterminate Biafrans from the face of the earth.<br />
<br />
In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said the repeated mishaps in the southern part of the country were a clear demonstration that they were being clinically executed by certain people.<br />
<br />
Commiserating with the families of the deceased, the group wondered why such incidents were not happening in certain parts of the country where even the owners of such articulated vehicles hail from.<br />

The statement partly read, “With a profound sense of deep sorrow and sadness we commiserate with all the families and communities that lost loved ones over the terror attack in Onitsha on the 16 October 2019.<br />

“This is not the first time an articulated lorry or a tanker driven by terrorist laden inflammable liquid has been involved in mass fatalities in Onitsha or other parts of Anambra State.<br />
<br />
“The story is always the same, it’s either their trailer had brake failure or their tanker exploded, all resulting in massive loss of lives and destruction of individually owned businesses.<br />
<br />
“We the Indigenous People of Biafra call these callous and wicked acts for what it is- a cowardly terrorist attack designed by those evil men determined to exterminate we Biafrans from the face of the earth and carried out by those that think they are serving a Jihadi cause that will bring about the Islamisation of Biafraland through terrorism.<br />
<br />
“At a time when herdsmen sponsored are actively engaged in the forceful acquisition of our lands in Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra and Abia, aided by the Nigerian Army under the guise of Operation Python Dance 4, this massive loss of lives and businesses in Onitsha is most unwelcome.<br />
<br />
“The question we keep asking is, why are there no exploding tankers in crowded streets of Kano, Kaduna or Sokoto?<br />
<br />
“Why must tankers driven by northerners always explode in the south or the brakes of their trailers always fail in Biafraland?<br />

“It is time now for our people to wake up to this new reality of population reduction by those intent on the destruction of the Biafran race”.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Compliance, Mr Dennis Idahosa, has commended the Federal Government and organised labour over the peaceful resolution on the full implementation of the new national minimum wage.<br />
<br />
Idahos, who gave the commendation in a statement on Friday in Benin on Friday said that strike would have further impacted negatively on the nation’s economy, were it not that it was averted.<br />
<br />
The federal government and the labour unions finally sorted out the issues of consequential adjustment for other categories of workers after three days of meeting which ended early today.<br />
<br />
Under the agreement reached, the core civil servants on grade level 7 are to get (23.2 per cent) adjustment; grade level 8 (20 per cent); grade level 9 (19 per cent); grade levels 10 to14 (16 per cent); and grade levels 15 to 17, (14 per cent).<br />

President Muhammadu Buhari had on April 18, signed the new minimum wage act into law.<br />
<br />
Idahosa said that the peaceful resolution of the issues had further demonstrated that Nigeria could make headway when By challenges confronting the country were discussed on a round table.<br />

He said, “To me, this peaceful resolution has demonstrated the never give up spirit, the key actors were able to sit and find a way out of the logjam.”<br />
<br />
The lawmaker urged Nigerian workers to go about their normal duty of moving the country forward since the issues had been resolved.<br />
<br />
The chairman also said they needed not to worry about when the implementation of the minimum wage would commence.<br />
<br />
The lawmaker reiterated that the National Assembly (NASS) had always been willing to come out with policies that would not be detrimental to the welfare of the Nigerian workers.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has reaffirmed that he has no plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for another political party.<br />

The governor spoke when he received members of the Godwin Obaseki Support Group (GOSG), during a courtesy visit at Government House in Benin City on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
Recall that the national chairman of the APC and Obaseki’s predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole had on Wednesday said the governor was secretly nursing plans to dump the party.<br />
<br />
“If a handful of individuals start misbehaving and feel we will leave the party for them; they will be the ones to leave,” he said.<br />

Obaseki described the APC as a party for the youths and the next generation, adding that his administration is focused on infrastructural and institutional reforms that would stand the test of time.<br />

Earlier, the Director-General of the group, Mr Henry Idogun, said the group was formed during the 2016 governorship election to bridge the information gap, which existed on the governor’s profile.<br />

He said: “The group was happy with the developmental strides of the Obaseki led-administration which include massive and sustained infrastructural development and deep-rooted institutional reforms, noting that the award presented to the governor by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) was well-deserved as the governor has made Edo State a reference point in transforming education in the country.”<br />
<br />
Idogun said GOSG exists to add value to governance and leverages the party machinery and other relevant stakeholders in the areas of voters’ education and mobilisation, creation of more polling units and election monitoring.<br />
<br />
He added that members of the group, numbering over 18,000, are in support of the second term bid of the governor.

At least three more dead bodies were recovered, yesterday, at the Ochanja Market in Onitsha, which got burnt when a tanker filled with fuel caught fire at the Upper Iweka area of the commercial city.<br />

This came as Governor Willie Obiano invited the affected traders to assemble at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka on Monday for documentation and possible assistance from the state government.<br />
<br />
Two of the dead bodies were suspected to be salesgirls in one of the burnt shops, while the other male body was found in another shop close to the scene of the fire incident.<br />

Yesterday, the traders constituted themselves into rescue groups and were packing the debris, only to discover the three dead bodies. Some of the traders almost threatened to cause riot when they were informed that Governor Obiano was coming to sympathize with them.<br />
<br />
The governor, who visited the scene at about 9.20am for on the spot assessment of the disaster, could however not enter the burnt market. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Don Adinuba, in a statement said Governor Obiano and the entire people of Anambra State regret the unfortunate situation, adding that the state government had taken steps to address the concerns of those affected.<br />
<br />
He said: “ Government therefore requests owners of properties affected by the tragic accident, shop owners and family members of deceased victims to assemble at Ekwueme Square, Awka on Monday October 21 2019 at 11am for documentation and to see how the Anambra State government can assist them. “<br />
<br />
A panel headed by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke has been set up by the governor to immediately determine the cause of the accident, why the firemen could not put out the fire and how the condition of the victims can be ameliorated. “Governor Obiano and all citizens of Anambra State identify with victims of this unfortunate fire incident and the general inhabitants of Onitsha over this sad inferno. The Anambra State government will do it’s best to stand by those affected.<br />
<br />
“Government therefore calls on all citizens to remain calm in the face of this disaster and be reassured of government’s commitment to the well- being of all and sundry.” He explained that security agencies in the state had been directed to ensure that law and order were maintained within and around the affected areas.<br />
<br />
 Former member of House of Representatives, Dr. Tony Nwoye said it was a sad day for Anambra State, regretting the enormous loss of lives and property. He added: “I empathise with the families of the dead victims and those who lost properties to the inferno. I urge them to show courage and utmost faith in the Creator. The sun will still shine on them all “This accident has become too recurring in Anambra and should worry everyone.<br />
<br />
The collaboration of the government, relevant stakeholders and the citizens, is needed to develop a proactive strategy that will forestall any further occurrence of this nature. Never again shall we witness anything such as this. “This is a time for us to show faith in our state and rally around the victims of the carnage. I call on Anambra people to come to the aid of the victims and collectively give them support to rebuild their businesses and overcome their grief. It is indeed a troubling time and we must have to show that brotherly spirit and love that make us Ndi Anambra at this time.”<br />

In his reaction, the Director General of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, and a chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief George Moghalu, called on the state government and other influential people in the state to come to the aid of the victims. He added: ”I am saddened at the loss of lives and we never wish for incidents like these in our dear state.<br />
<br />
“I urge the Anambra State government to do what it is supposed to do to ensure that the traders continue to earn a living.” One of the victims, Mr. Chukwuka Okeke, a neighbour to the woman who died with her baby in the fire incident, described the tragedy as unfortunate but avoidable. According to him, it was not up to twenty minutes he chatted with the woman before she was consumed in the inferno.<br />

In an emotion-laden voice, he said: “We were in our shops when I got the call that there was fire incident at Iweka. Though we saw smoke going up from a distance, nobody could believe it would extend to this place. “For over three hours, we were perceiving the smell of fuel mixed with gas from the tanker as it flowed through the drainage until the whole thing went up in flames. “The woman had already rushed out of the shop with her baby when she suddenly went back.<br />
<br />
But she slipped and fell inside the gutter, which was already in flames.” Okeke said the woman whose husband also owns a shop in the city, had the baby early this year after 16 years of marriage. “She got married in 2003 but had her first baby early this year. It’s really a tragedy,” Okeke said. Efforts to speak with some landlords whose houses were burnt along Upper Iweka Road proved abortive as some, who were around were still in deep shock and their children could not speak for them. One of them, who managed to speak but did not give his name, said he is devastated and cannot able to quantify what he had lost.<br />
<br />
He said: “I cannot even do any quantification of my losses and you know my tenants also lost greately in goods and house hold items. “Today is not the time to speak. We are still in great shock. This incident is not because we are careless, but something that happened in far away Upper Iweka and here we are counting loss on Iweka Road.”<br />
<br />
Other affected traders in the incident along Menax, Iweka Road and Zik Avenue by Ochanja Market Roundabout also declined to speak with journalists saying they are still counting losses and will not be able to give account of what they have lost.<br />
<br />
When our source visited the Ochanja Market and Zik Avenue, angry traders were seen salvaging, in pains and bitterness, some goods they felt could still be useful while others whose wares and shops were burnt completely, were bemoaning their losses and raining insults on all the relevant authorities that could not come to their rescue.<br />
<br />
Speaking with newsmen, Chairman of Ochanja Central Market, Mr. Nelson Ojukwu confirmed that five shops inside Ochanja Market were burnt, adding that but for his traders and the leadership of the market who mobilised water tankers, the whole market and the surrounding buildings would have burnt to ashes. Ojukwu called on the Anambra State government to provide the markets with fire-fighting trucks to alleviate the sufferings and losses the traders and individual house owners incure during fire incidents.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s latest order for slashing public officers’ spending is the end to wasteful spending culture nurtured by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) era.<br />

Praising the President for what it called “sweeping cost-saving measures aimed at instilling financial discipline and prudence,” the party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the action was part of fulfilling his campaign promises to Nigerians.<br />

According to the party, the new orders, including the one disallowing ministers and other heads of government agencies from traveling until they must have defended their budgets before the National Assembly, were aimed at instilling discipline and proper ethnics into governance in the country.<br />

The statement said: “This is another fulfilment of the president’s election promise to cut the costs of governance, curb leakages, end impunity and ensure adherence to the rule of law by all departments of government.<br />
<br />
“To list a few of the approved measures to instil financial discipline and prudence on government trips, all public funded trips must be strictly for official purposes and must be backed with documented evidence.<br />
<br />
“The classes of tickets approved for government officials on official trips have been clearly spelt out. In effect, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants to the President, Chairmen of Extra-Ministerial Departments and Chief Executive Officers of Parastatals are allowed to fly Business Class. Other categories of Public Officers are to travel on Economy Class.<br />
<br />
“Government will no longer fund extended stays. Duration of official trips is limited to only the number of days of the event as contained in the supporting documents to qualify for public funding.<br />
<br />
“Clearly, the era of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) governments when ministers and other senior government appointees splashed our commonwealth on private jet trips, first-class tickets and limousines to ferry family and cronies around, are over. Our public resources are now being rightly deployed to address our national infrastructure needs, social investments and other initiatives that directly benefits the people.<br />

“The APC administration remains resolute in fulfilling its promises to the people of Nigeria.”

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has reaffirmed that he has no plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for another political party.<br />

The governor spoke when he received members of the Godwin Obaseki Support Group (GOSG), during a courtesy visit at Government House in Benin City on Wednesday.<br />

“If a handful of individuals start misbehaving and feel we will leave the party for them; they will be the ones to leave,” he said.<br />

Obaseki described the APC as a party for the youths and the next generation, adding that his administration is focused on infrastructural and institutional reforms that would stand the test of time.<br />

Barely 48 hours after a petrol tanker lost control and fell around Upper Iweka area of Onitsha and exploded, killing scores and burning several house and shops, another fire incident is being reported at Omagba Phase 2, Onitsha this morning.<br />

Eyewitness reports suggest that another tanker with petroleum products fell, spilling it's content and exploded almost immediately along Onitsha-Enugu express way opposite Besoy filling station at around 2:30 am this morning.<br />

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Investments, Mrs Maryam Uwais, on Thursday, said 80 per cent of payments for social investments come from the recovered looted funds by former Head of State, Sani Abacha.<br />

She added that the remaining 20 per cent came from credit from the World Bank.<br />
<br />
She spoke as a keynote speaker during a training and advocacy programme on tracing and recovery of illicit funds and assets in Abuja.<br />

The training was organised by Human Environmental Developmental Agenda supported by MacArthur Foundation and Open Society Initiative for West Africa in collaboration with Kent Law School, The Corner House, Finance Uncovered and Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism.<br />

Uwais said the beneficiaries of the fund had been very responsive and productive, adding that they had saved about N567m.<br />
<br />
According to her, over 18,200 of them had taken loans from the intervention while less than 1,000 had defaulted.<br />
<br />
She said, “The funds for the social investments are from the World Bank and the Abacha loot. We are using the credit that we got from World Bank in the ratio of 20:80. 80 per cent from the Abacha loot so that we can pay the beneficiaries the amount that the government has pledged to help them. “This has been quite proactive for them because we have seen a lot of activities in the communities. Today many of these women are doing their business, they are trading, and engaging in agriculture. They are doing very well at their homes.”

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, says the agency is planning to rehabilitate young people who are engaged in Internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo boys.<br />

Magu stated this in Lagos on Thursday while delivering a paper titled, ‘Strategic change administration and innovation to curb corruption in Nigeria,’ at the third All Administrators National Conference of the Chartered Institute of Administration<br />

According to him, Internet fraudsters could be useful to the agency in future.<br />

While speaking on collaboration between the Nigerian graft agency and other nations, Magu said EFCC had secured collaboration with ECOWAS member-states to aid in prosecution of cross-border crimes.<br />

He stated, “So if you carry money from Nigeria and escape to Ghana, we will just call the men in Ghana and say, ‘arrange this man and keep him for me.<br />
<br />
“This is what the Yahoo-Yahoo boys like to do. But we are planning to rehabilitate them because they can be useful to us in future.”<br />
<br />
Magu said the graft agency had been able to secure 614 convictions between January and September.<br />
<br />
He attributed this to the increase in the agency’s zonal offices from seven in 2009 to 18 in 2018.<br />

According to him, in addition to increasing its zonal offices, the agency had also increased and trained more personnel all in an effort to curb corruption in the country.<br />

In the fight against corruption, synergy is important, the EFCC acting chairman said.<br />
<br />
He urged the CIA to collaborate with the agency in the fight by making sure that they administer their affairs in a corruption-free manner.<br />
<br />
He also called on civil organisations and members of the public to report cases of corruption to the agency.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of a mother and her child as a result of an oil tanker accident in Onitsha, Anambra.<br />
<br />
Reacting to the incident in a statement by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Wednesday, President Buhari said: “I am profoundly touched by the sight of the charred remains of an innocent mother and her child who are victims of this tragedy.”<br />
<br />
The President also extended his sympathies to other victims of the explosion whose houses, shops and other property were destroyed in the mishap.<br />
<br />
He said: “While I express sadness over this tragedy, I must at the same time call for urgent action on the part of those concerned to stem these frequent fatal disasters on public roads.”<br />

The President decried the way and manner safety precautions and routine maintenance were taken for granted by vehicle owners.<br />
<br />
“I call on the Ministry of Transport, the Federal Road Safety Commission and other stakeholders to urgently address the issue of safety standards in the country, with a view to stemming the embarrassing frequency of these tragedies,” he added.

American boxer Patrick Day has died four days after suffering a head injury during his super welterweight bout with compatriot Charles Conwell.<br />
<br />
He was aged 27.<br />
<br />
The American was knocked out in the 10th round of the fight and received treatment in the ring before being stretchered out of Chicago’s Wintrust Arena by paramedics.<br />
<br />
He was then rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was placed in a coma and remained in an extremely critical condition over the next few days.<br />

Promoter Lou DiBella confirmed the news that Day had passed away on Wednesday ‘surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins’.<br />
<br />
‘On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury,’ DiBella said in a statement.<br />
<br />
‘Patrick Day didn’t need to box. He came from a good family, he was smart, educated, had good values and had other avenues available to him to earn a living. He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring. Boxing is what Pat loved to do.<br />
<br />
Day was the New York Daily News Golden Gloves champion in 2012 and won the WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title and the IBF Inter-Continental Super Welterweight Title.<br />
<br />
His record stood at 17-4-1, with six knockouts.

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is optimistic Anthony Joshua can regain the world titles he surrendered in the June shocking defeat by Mexican boxer Andy Ruiz jnr.<br />

He hinged his confidence on the caliber of helpers that have been recruited to help the Nigeria born British boxer prepare for the all-important December 7 re-match in Saudi Arabia.<br />

He believes the sparring partners helping to tinker Joshua into shape for the showdown are equal to the task.<br />

‘It’s madness. There’s eight weeks to go, and he’s been in camp for four weeks already,’ Hearn recently told Fino Boxing. ‘A lot of early sparring now is replicating the style of Ruiz.<br />

The ‘chubby’ sparring partner brought in to help Anthony Joshua’s preparations for his money-spinning rematch with Andy Ruiz Jnr appears to be heavyweight Timothy Moten.<br />
<br />
The 27-year-old American is currently training at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, where Joshua is based with Coach Rob McCracken.<br />
<br />
Eddie Hearn revealed this week that new sparring partners designed to replicate Ruiz’s body shape and style have been flown in to work with Joshua<br />
<br />
Moten, who has won all of his five professional contests, has uploaded several videos where he was working out in the Sheffield gym.<br />
<br />
The heavyweight boxer’s stature is similar to Ruiz’s, although he is three inches smaller than the Mexican.<br />
<br />
He has also been training with Coach Angel Fernandez – who has reportedly been drafted in to work with Joshua for this camp – and was filmed hitting the pads with him in the English Institute of Sport gym this week.

The Defence Counsel to Fred Ajudua, a Lagos socialite accused of defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, on Wednesday, raised probing questions on the source of the $8.4million that Ajudua allegedly collected from Bamaiyi.<br />

Addressing an Ikeja High Court, Ajudua’s lawyer, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), disputed Bamaiyi’s claims on the source of the money.<br />
<br />
Citing available documents, Ojo argued that the sale of some of the property in question occurred in 1994, 10 years before the fraud.<br />
<br />
The former chief of army staff had at previous court proceedings claimed that the source of the $8.4 million was from sale of some of his property and sales from his farm produce.<br />

He also named other sources of the money as donations from friends, colleagues, relations and well-wishers, who had pleaded with him not to identify them because some of them held positions in government.<br />
<br />
But responding to Ojo, Bamaiyi said that his properties were sold and that the proceeds from the sale were kept by his brother until when he needed to hand over some money to Ajudua while he was in prison.<br />
<br />
“I was in service when these properties were sold and my brother Barrister Danladi Bamaiyi was a witness as a solicitor when the lease agreements were signed.<br />
<br />
“When the properties were to be sold, I invited him from Sokoto where he was practicing and I called Mr Yakoe Chai, the Managing Director of HFP, the construction firm and I told him my brother was going to get the payment for the sale.<br />
<br />
“I gave my brother a note, it was my brother that collected the money from HFP on my instruction. I instructed my brother to change the money into U.S. dollars which he did until this case came up while I was in prison.<br />
<br />
“My brother then moved from Sokoto to Abuja for legal practice when the issue of changing my counsel came up and I called my brother to send us the money which was to be given to Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) as professional fees.<br />
<br />
“I sent my wife Inuade to Abuja and she collected $400,000 from my brother Danladi and on Nov. 30, 2004, she brought the money to the Kirikiri Maximum Prison,” Bamaiyi said.<br />
<br />
Probing Bamaiyi further, Ojo said: “did you sell the property in either 2003, 2004 or 2005. Were the proceeds of the sale kept in a bank account, in the ground or at the graveyard?<br />
<br />
“Why did you not send the hand-written note where you wrote the instructions to your brother to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Did you not fill asset declaration forms while you were in service?<br />
<br />
“The farm you referred to in your evidence-in-chief, is it operating through a business name or a limited liability company?”<br />
<br />
Responding, Bamaiyi said: “The properties were all sold in 1994 and the proceeds were kept by my brother. How he kept it I do not know, so far as he knew what he was doing.<br />
<br />
“I gave him a hand-written note and that was sufficient, the notes were loosely written by me.<br />
<br />
“I did not register my farm as a limited liability company. It was after my service and after I had been discharged and acquitted by the court that I registered it as Wadtare Farms but it had been in operation since 1984.<br />
<br />
“The farm was run in my name and it has accounts in First Bank of Nigeria at Zuru in my village. The account I have in my village is the same account the farm was using for their transactions.<br />
<br />
“I completed my asset declaration form when I was in service and I only registered my farm after service.”<br />
<br />
Justice Josephine Oyefeso, however, adjourned the case until Nov. 8 for continuation of trial.<br />
<br />
According to prosecution proceedings, Ajudua was incarcerated at the Kirikiri Maximum Prisons over alleged fraud while Bamaiyi was incarcerated over alleged involvement in the attempted murder of Mr Alex Ibru, the publisher of The Guardian Newspapers.<br />
<br />
The prosecution alleges that Ajudua had alongside some accomplices, approached Bamaiyi in prison in 2004 and fleeced him of the amount.<br />
<br />
Ajudua had allegedly convinced Bamaiyi that he could hire the legal services of Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) to help secure his freedom from Kirikiri Prisons with Ajudua fraudulently receiving $8.4 million as a legal fee.<br />
<br />
When the fraud came to light, the law chambers of Afe Babalola and Co. issued a disclaimer disassociating itself from the case.
