The outgoing Deputy Spokesman of apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chuks Ibegbu, has thanked Ndigbo for giving them the opportunity to serve them in the last four years.
In what looks like a valedictory statement made available to newsmen in Umuahia, on Saturday, Ibegbu said the outgoing leadership did its best to improve the image of the apex Igbo body.
He noted that Igbo marginalisation started after the civil war and must not be underrated by the federal government.
He blamed some Igbos who exhibit what he termed PULL-HIM DOWN SYNDROME and NSHIKO MENTALITY to turn a new leaf.

Ibegbu called on Igbo political leaders to emulate the Great Dr. Michael Okpara , the premier of the former Eastern region who made the region the fastest growing economy in the world in the 60s and Dr Sam Mbakwe who achieved a lot in the old Imo.
He lauded the founding fathers of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, prominent of them being the first indigenous Governor of old Eastern region, Dr Akanu Ibiam.
He regretted that present Igbo leaders have not done enough to replay the achievements and candor of these great Igbo leaders of years ago.
The chieftain insisted on the restructuring of Nigeria as the only way out of her woes and noted that the 2023 Presidency should go to the South East as a balm to heal the wounds of the civil war.
He noted that Nigeria is a giant on mosquito legs due to the selfishness of her rulers and warned that unless the rulers change their ways, the nation will become a failed one soonest.
He urged all Nigerians to work together and build a great nation.
According to him, God richly blessed the nation but her rulers have made it appear as if it’s a cursed nation due to corruption and looting of her resources.
Ibegbu called on all the delegates to shun undue influence and money and salvage their race by electing patriots including himself to run the affairs of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
He further called for a similar support to his successor but promised to offer advices when needed.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has warned that South-West Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, must not become another Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
Soyinka stated this on Saturday, while featuring on Arise TV.
The revered author noted that men of the Amotekun Corps, must be trained on the issue of ethics, so that they do not become more brutal and ruthless than the defunct SARS.
Ondo and Oyo States have launched the security outfit, which was endorsed by six South-West states last year.

However, there have been allegations of recklessness and extrajudicial killings against the security outfit, especially in Oyo State.
Soyinka said, “I have told them anytime you want us to come and assist, we will come even if it is just on the ethical session so that as you are training them to defend us, we are also training their minds so that Amotekun does not become another SARS, very important. We must do everything together.”

Nigerian rapper, Eva Alordiah, has finally disclosed why she stopped making music.
Recall that the 32-year-old singer was one of the top Nigerian female rappers in the country.
Her first album ‘ 1960: The Album’ was released in September 2016.
However, she became a writer, entrepreneur and stopped making music.

It was reported she also moved to Ghana.
Affirming dumping music, Eva on Thursday took to her Instagram page disclosing her reasons for abandoning music.
A fan asked, “I still don’t know why you stopped making music,”
Eva, responding, wrote: “I stopped to get back to my core essence. I stopped for me.”

Former political office holders and retirees in Ogun State risk being arrested should they fail to return government number plates in their possession.
This is as the government issued directive that all unauthorized number plates in possession of public officials be returned to the office of the Head of Service without further delay.
A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Service Matters, Dahunsi Ogunleye, on Friday confirmed that security agents have been directed to arrest private vehicles with government number plates henceforth.
Ogunleye directed that all number plates affixed to unserviceable vehicles be removed, adding that the ones with retirees and ex-political office holders be returned immediately.

Meanwhile, all accounting officers have been told to furnish the Office of the Head of Service with details of allocated official vehicles, with government number plates for record purpose.

Senator Roy Blunt of the Republican Party and a member of GOP leadership, has declared that President Donald Trump’s impeachment is “not going to happen.”
“There is no way we’re going to impeach the President. There’s not the time to do it,” the Missouri Republican said in an interview with local Kansas City TV station, KSHB.
“When Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer were talking about it, it’s obviously just another political point trying to be made. It’s disappointing. It’d be much more disappointing if people can’t see that,” Blunt said.
The House Democrats will as soon as Monday introduce articles of impeachment against Trump, according to CNN.

Speaker of the House, Democrat’s Nancy Pelosi had earlier called for the President’s impeachment by invoking the 25th amendment for inciting violence.
The incumbent President until this moment has refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory in the November 3 presidential election.
Trump had rejected the election, making unsubstantiated claims of election fraud and filed numerous court cases challenging the results from various states.
Having lost out in almost all the court cases, the President has been caught making prior efforts to stop the certification of the election result.
Notwithstanding, the US Congress on Wednesday certified Biden’s victory amid attacks on the Capitol by the President’s supporters.

“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence”, Twitter noted.
The social media platform said in the context of horrific events this week, it warned that additional violations of rules would potentially result in suspension.
Twitter added that it reminded users that accounts are not above its regulations
The statement added that the company will continue to be transparent around its policies and their enforcement.
It is not yet clear how Trump plans to disseminate his messages going forward. Facebook has also extended his ban.
More calls are being made for the President’s impeachment over Wednesday’s action by his supporters.

The unprecedented incident attracted local and international outrage.

However, Melaye in a post via his Twitter account on Saturday morning said God used Trump to humble Americans.

“God uses the foolish things to bring down the wise and that is what God used Trump for.
“Trump wasn’t a mistake. America only needed to learn some lessons and for the world to see their imperfections.

Manchester United defender, Eric Bailly, has offered to help the club’s new signing, Amad Diallo, settle in at Old Trafford after the 18-year-old sealed a £36million move to the Red Devils.

American celebrities have taken to their various social media platform to call for the impeachment of the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, over the fierce siege of the Capitol by the president’s supporters.
The riot was provoked by remarks made by Trump at a rally earlier that day. The invasion disrupted a joint session of Congress who were counting the vote of the Electoral College to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Taking to her Twitter account, famous American singer, Lady Gaga, called for Trump’s impeachment.

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have rescued three kidnapped persons at Mararaba Udege in Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has reportedly clashed with the club’s board over signing of West Ham’s Declan Rice.
Rice, a former Chelsea academy prospect, has developed into a fine defensive midfielder at West Ham, and is now being linked with a return to the Blues.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has released the list of successful applicants in its ongoing recruitment exercise.
NDLEA spokesman, Deputy Commander of Narcotics (DCN) Jonah Achema, disclosed this in a statement he issued on Friday, NAN reports.
Achema called on those who scaled through to visit the agency’s website www.ndlea.gov.org for the list.
The spokesman also disclosed that those shortlisted have been contacted via E-mail and SMS.

“The affected candidates, numbering 5, 000, are to appear at the Agency’s Academy, Citadel Counter-Narcotics Nigeria, (CCNN), Katton-Rikkos, Jos, Plateau State for the screening and documentation exercise between January 10 and 23, 2021 at 0900 hours daily.
“The candidates are divided into four different groups for the screening, in adherence to the COVID-19 pandemic protocol.
“The order and schedule for the exercise according to the group into which the candidates fall are also indicated. They are expected to arrive a day ahead of their screening period,” said Achema.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has said that it is difficult to talk about another lockdown as states strive to contain the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
He also said that his state had lost Very Important Personalities (VIPs) to Coronavirus.
Lalong said this on Thursday while speaking with State House correspondents after a private meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said that he contracted and survived COVID-19, adding that he went through a trying period during the treatment and recovery.

“I just recovered from COVID-19; for those who say that it doesn’t exist, I do not wish my enemies to go through what I went through for ten days,” Lalong said.
“All the symptoms were there; everything that I went through; I thank God that I was able to come out of it, and I’m now very healthy.
“Also, as a member of the PTF representing the governors, we’ve drummed it that this second wave is more dangerous than what we saw before.
“In my state, we lost almost five people; they’re Very Important Personalities (VIPs); they’re VIPs; so, in terms of approach, we need to be very vigilant; we’ve said it several times.
“Although, it’s difficult to talk about locking down states now, but the way people are going; when you start talking about losing five people within two weeks.
“Yesterday, I saw it; my state recorded 160 cases, definitely, there must be an approach towards enforcement; so this is what we are doing as governors, and we are taking it seriously.”
Lalong also said that he would, in the coming week, engage in a wide stakeholders’ meeting to emphasise the issue of enforcement.
He said he had warned people in the churches and other places that they must observe the protocols or face another lockdown.
“Every church I go to now; everywhere I go, I tell them; if you don’t follow enforcement, then you may go back to the last option of general lockdown but let us approach it because it is really very deadly now.
“Somebody gets it; one, two, three days, he is gone; but before, somebody gets it, you rush him to the centre; you go through processes, and you come out of it.
“But how many people will come out; how many people are privileged to even come out it like we do and that is the concern we have.
“The Federal Government is doing a lot honestly through the committee headed by the vice president, but it is just that people don’t want to follow the protocol.
“Just observe the normal non-pharmaceutical protocol, and definitely we will get over it,” he said.

A US Capitol Police officer has died of injuries sustained during clashes with a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters who overran a session of Congress, police said late Thursday.
It was the first law enforcement death stemming from the violence at the Capitol on Wednesday which saw flag-waving crowds overwhelm police and break into the legislature.
Four protesters died, including a woman who was shot by police. Three other deaths were reported on the Capitol grounds, but the circumstances remained unclear.
Officer Brian Sicknick, a 12-year veteran of the force, was “responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters,” Capitol Police said in a statement.

A 10 months old case that according to her seems to be an escalation and yet she doesn’t know what happened and why.
In a tweet she made few hours ago, she stated how Zlatan blocked her off on WhatsApp and Instagram. She said that this happened while they were still friends and in good terms and that she is yet to understand why he did that.
She also recalled the single track she made with Zlatan, ‘Gelato‘ and how it turned out to be a hit and yet despite all these, Zlatan blocked her off.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, says it will prosecute the drivers of articulated vehicles involved in accidents in the early hours of Thursday to serve as deterrent to other reckless drivers.
The Agency and other emergency responders, including its national counterpart, NEMA, the Police, Lagos Fire Service, FRSC and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps responded swiftly and successful evacuated trailers and tankers involved in accidents in different locations in the State, with the two most severe of the accidents at Kirikiri in Apapa and Toyota bus stop inward Mile 2, on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
Addressing newsmen at the scene of the Toyota bus stop tanker accident in the evening, LASEMA’s Director-General, Dr Fẹmi Oke-Osanyitolu said it took many hours for emergency responders to successfully dampen the fire caused by the tanker which discharged its entire 44,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, on the road after crashing into another tanker at about 9 o’clock in the morning.
At some few minutes to 6 o’clock in the evening, the PMS from the tanker was still gushing on the road with men of LASEMA’s Rapid Unit diluting it with chemical to prevent further fire outbreak.

Dr Oke-Osanyitolu stated that though no life was lost in all the incidents, but the reckless drivers must face the wrath of the law.
“This morning, we handled four cases of trailer overturning, we will not tolerate that in Lagos State again, we are going to prosecute all of them ” Oke-Osanyitolu warned.
Although the carcass of the tanker has been taken off the road, the LASEMA DG announced that integrity test would be conducted on the Apakun-Isolo bridge linking the Airport from Apapa – Oshodi expressway, which was badly affected by the fire as well as the newly constructed road and divider which the tanker fire damaged.
Confirming the closure of the Bridge to traffic in the time being, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Hakeem Odumosu who led his men to ensure crowd control and prevent people from scooping the PMS said the road on which the accident occurred would also remain closed.
CP Odumosu also used the occasion to caution residents who are in the habit of trooping to accident scenes to record with their phones, thereby hampering emergency responders to desist.
“Once there’s emergency, any person there should immediately notify, we have the 767 number and all the police numbers out there, if not because of the quick response that we have here, we would have been picking dead bodies because of the velocity of PMS, once emergency happens, we want people who are not professionals to keep off, that’s the least cooperation that we want from them” CP Odumosu advised.
Some of the eyewitnesses at the scene who are in support of the closure of the bridge and road, confirmed the recklessness of the tanker driver and also want the State government to boost the capacity of the fire service.
The Oshodi-Apapa road inward Mile 2 was gridlocked for close to 9 hours while the emergency responders were busy with the operation.

Popular Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau has averred that she cannot quit acting for marriage.
The 27-year-old Hausa movie star brought this revelation to light on Wednesday during an interactive session with her fans on Twitter.
Her remark had come as a reaction to a question during an interactive session with her fans on Twitter on Wednesday.
During the 30-minute session which spanned several aspects of Rahama’s life, a fan had asked if she was ready to give up filmmaking for marriage.

But responding, Sadau wondered why women have continued to thrive in other fields but often criticised for considering filmmaking as a career.
“Why quit filmmaking for marriage? Is filmmaking not an occupation? Why is it okay to have women in different areas of organization but not in filmmaking ? Media for example,” she retorted.
The actress also reacted to continual criticism of her actions by the public, noting that such backlashes are sometimes “unfair.”
Sadau, however, said she remained unperturbed over people’s opinions about her.
“Entirely!!!!! But I’m not bothered. it’s an open space where everybody thinks he’s opinion matters when it does not!!! #AskRahama,” she wrote.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Thursday, joined a host of others in condemning the protest at the US Capitol.
A violent protest had erupted at the US Capitol building in Washington DC on Wednesday after Donald Trump addressed his followers vowing “never to concede”.
During the violent protest, a woman was shot dead.
Reacting, Fani-Kayode on his Twitter handle, insisted that Trump was robbed, but violence in any shape or form has no place in a democratic setting.

His tweets read: “I clearly & categorically condemn the violence that we witnessed in the Capitol building in Washington yesterday during the meeting of the Electors. I believe that the election was rigged & Trump was robbed, but violence in any shape or form has no place in a democratic setting.
“All matters concerning the American Presidency ought to be resolved in a peaceful manner & I am glad that President Donald Trump had the presence of mind to tell the protesters to disperse and go home. As much as I love @realDonaldTrump and believe that he was cheated out of the election I will not support any action from his supporters that would disturb the peace, jeopardise life & property or lead to a civil war in America. Those of us that love & believe in him fought a good fight & stood firm, regardless of the odds& the insults, right to the end.
“It is time to accept the reality of a Biden presidency and move on. We must not let this matter divide and destroy America and indeed the world any further. This is the time to build bridges and come together. This is the time to emulate great men like Nigeria’s @GEJonathan, let things go & maintain the peace for the sake of all. In 2015 he was robbed & rigged out of the election too but he refused to urge his supporters to indulge in violence, he conceded his right to fight till the end & he put the peace, safety and security of the Nigerian people first. “Trump will be vindicated but he will lose that opportunity if he refuses to accept the final decision of Congress and the Electors and conceded the election. I pray he makes that choice and brings this increasingly ugly and dangerous situation to closure.
“I commend every Trumper in Nigeria for keeping the faith and standing firm till the end but now is the time to sheath our swords and accept the facts and the situation. Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, has urged his teammates to learn from their Carabao Cup semi-final 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Pogba said he was disappointed because it was not the first time Man United is losing a semi-final clash against Man City, adding that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has to do better going forward.
John Stones and Fernandinho scored the two goals for Pep Guardiola’s side against Man United at Old Trafford.

Omar said she is “drawing up” articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
She made the disclosure after the protest at Capitol building in Washington DC on Wednesday.

A violent protest had erupted at US Capitol after Trump addressed his followers vowing “never to concede”.
During the protest, a woman was shot dead.
Reacting, Kevin Hart on his Instagram page, displaying a picture of protesters climbing walls of US Capitol, described the incident as sad and disrespectful to all people of colour.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday night, recorded 1,664 new infections of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.
The NCDC confirmed this on its verified Twitter account.
Five deaths were also recorded in Nigeria.
The figure was the highest ever recorded in one day since the virus was first reported in the country.

The latest figure surpassed the 1,354 cases recorded across the country on Tuesday, confirming that Nigeria is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus.
The NCDC stated that the new infections bring the country’s total to 94,369.
The new cases were recorded from 22 States, including the Federal Capital Territory.

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has taken a swipe at corrupt officials in Nigeria.
The cleric lambasted them during the wake mass for Archbishop Peter Yariyock Jatau at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Kaduna.
His sermon was titled, “A Nation in Search of Its Soul”.
Kukah said citizens usually complain that the country is full of churches and mosques but cannot find the values of religions in their leaders.
“We sin at home by stealing the nation’s resources but we seek repentance and forgiveness in Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem in the guise of lesser or higher pilgrimages,” Arise News quoted him as saying.

The National Peace Committee member likened Nigeria to the proverbial farmer searching for his black goat because darkness is setting in.
“Our nation has become one huge waste land, huge debris of the deceit, lies, treachery, double dealing and duplicity. Nigerian politicians have turned our politics into a huge trojan horse, a hoax, a hall of guile and dissimulation,” he said.
Kukah warned that general frustration was on the rise and evident in domestic violence and inter-communal conflicts.
“A combination of all these has turned us unto a nation at war with itself,” the Bishop stated.

John Campbell, a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, has criticised the arrest of Sahara Reporters Publisher, Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore and four others were put on remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre by Abuja Magistrates’ Court.
In his reaction, Campbell told the Nigerian authorities that the arrest puts the country in a bad light.
The senior fellow for Africa at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington hinted that the coming government in America was taking notes.

“The arrest of Nigerian journalist and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore is a poor representation of Nigeria to the incoming Biden administration”, Campbell tweeted.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has written to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in protest of the detention.
SERAP urged the UN group to pressure President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to release the detainees.
In late 2019, Campblell likened the Buhari administration to military rule.
This followed Sowore’s re-arrest at the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 6 of the same year, and The Punch newspaper’s declaration that the Nigeria leader was a Major General not a President.
In an article titled: “Buhari’s Dictatorial Past and the Rule of Law Today in Nigeria”, Campbell stated that the Department of State Service’s (DSS) action had damaged the country’s international reputation.
He noted that in the immediate aftermath of the DSS’s “invasion of an Abuja court room and its re-arrest of Sowore, The Punch announced that it will prefix President Muhammadu Buhari’s name with his military rank, Major General, and will refer to his administration as a “regime,” until “they purge themselves of their insufferable contempt for the rule of law.”
According to Campbell, “The Punch draws parallels between Buhari’s government and his “ham-fisted military junta in 1984/85,” when he was military chief of state. For Punch the “regime’s actions and assaults on the courts, disobedience of court orders and arbitrary detention of citizens reflect the true character of the martial culture.”
He added that the newspaper also attacked the military and the police for failing to understand that peaceful agitation and the right to associate are fundamental rights.
Campbell said The Punch referred to the detention of Islamic Movement of Nigeria leader, Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, his wife, and former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, all in violation of various court orders, as well as governors’ moves to curtail media freedom and the right to demonstrate.
“Its criticism of Buhari is not surprising, but it is worth noting that Zakzaky and Dasuki are both northern Muslims. What is different this time is the parallelism between military rule and Buhari’s civilian administration. Buhari’s supporters are likely to find the Punch stance infuriating.
“Nigeria’s foreign friends will be hoping that the government takes no move to limit Punch’s freedom of expression. The SSS assault on a court room and the re-arrest of Sowore has already damaged the country’s international reputation”, Cambell stressed.

Two workers in the employment of Oyo State have been arrested for allegedly selling COVID-19 palliatives in Ibadan.
The workers were arrested for selling 40 bags of sugar which are part of COVID-19 palliatives.
The two workers have been arraigned in court.
Policemen from Oyo State police command arraigned the two staff at an Iwo Road Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The defendants are Mr Adebiyi Azeez, a driver, and Mr Sunday Akinleye, an Assistant Protocol Officer in charge of Palliative at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters at the State Secretariat in Ibadan.
It was gathered that the duo were charged alongside a trader, Kafayat Babalola for allegedly receiving and buying the stolen items.
The defendants are facing three -counts charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving of stolen goods.
The offence was said to have been committed on December 30, 2020, at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
Police prosecutor, Mr. Sunday Ogunremi told the court that Adebiyi and Akinleye allegedly conspired together to commit the offence of stealing.
“Adebiyi, driver and Akinleye, assistant protocol officer in charge of Palliative allegedly stole 40 bags of Dangote Sugar Covid -19 Palliatives at the Ministry valued N60, 000 property of Oyo State Government
“The duo of Adebiyi and Akinleye allegedly used the official vehicle of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy title to convey the goods to the buyer.
“The third defendant, Mrs Kafayat Babalola, a trader at Agbeni Market, Ibadan, received 40 bags of sugar Covid -19 Palliatives knowing that it is not for sale and property of Oyo State Government,” he said.
Ogunremi said that the offence contravened section 516, 390 (9) and 427 of the Criminal Code of Oyo State 2000.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Taiwo Oladiran thereafter granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

Paris Saint-Germain new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has said that Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli is welcome at the club.
Pochettino said this at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of his side’s away Ligue 1 clash with Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, while responding to speculation linking Alli with a move to PSG.
The Argentine, who replaced Thomas Tuchel at the Parc des Princes, coached Alli during his time at Tottenham.
Alli has been strongly linked with a move to PSG since Pochettino took charge of the French Ligue 1 champions last Saturday.

“I think every single club is different,” Pochettino said when asked about a possible move for Alli.
“I know very well that Paris Saint-Germain is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and of course Tottenham today is too. It’s an amazing club and of course, we (had) unbelievable memories there.
“It’s difficult to compare because we are in France and Tottenham is an English club, and it is difficult to be objective with Tottenham.
“It’s still in our heart, and we love Tottenham, and I think it’s a relationship that is never going to stop. Always we are going to think (about the club).
“But I think now it’s time for us to be focused 200% on Paris Saint-Germain and of course the situation like you are asking me, to be honest, we are not talking about that, because we haven’t had time since the second of January when we came to Paris.”
“It has been a crazy period for us, trying to adapt to a new club – a lot of meetings, training sessions and to prepare for the game tomorrow,” Pochettino added.
“That is the principle objective – to win tomorrow and perform in the way that we want.
“There are a lot of things that we have done, but I think we will have time to talk [about transfers] in the future.
“Like I said before, this is one of my first press conferences and, for sure, we are going to have time.
“But any big player in the world, I think, in Paris Saint-Germain, always is welcome.”

The Federal Government on Tuesday said the late presentation of COVID-19 patients at approved treatment centres had largely contributed to the number of deaths recorded in the country.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunnimbe Mamora, said this on Monday during the press conference of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.
He said, “The various approved treatment centres have scaled up activities as directed and quality of care continues to improve. A major factor contributing to the mortality of cases is the late presentation at the approved treatment centres.
“We, therefore, appeal to caregivers not to hold on to suspected cases who fit the case identification protocol for longer than necessary and refer promptly. This will greatly improve treatment outcomes and drive our case fatality rate further down.”

The minister also said that the Federal Government has been making spirited efforts at ensuring availability of oxygen on a short term basis through collaboration with CACOVID while still pursuing the process for immediate intervention for nationwide equitable and sustainable oxygen availability at the Federal Tertiary Hospitals as well as state-owned Hospitals.
He said, “We acknowledge with thanks the provision of 100 cylinders of medical oxygen per day by a donor company for the needed support of patients in the Isolation and Treatment Centers in the FCT.
“It is important to state that the ultimate plan in terms of medical oxygen supply is based on systematic oxygen assessment and gaps identification in the country bothering severe disequilibrium, uneven storage/demand ratio, distribution logistics challenges and equipment and plant dilapidation.
“Our oxygen availability intervention plan is targeted at immediate, medium and long term plans with special attention to the COVID-19 high burden areas like FCT, Lagos, Kaduna.”
Mamora said that it was imperative during the second wave to strictly adhere to the non-pharmaceutical interventions of wearing face mask, physical and social distancing; hand washing with soap and water and use of hand sanitizers where necessary.
He said that in this regard the taskforce is liaising with state governments, National Orientation Agency and other relevant MDAs to intensify sensitization of the general public on the need to comply with the existing COVID – 19 protocols.

Japan maintains its lead into 2021 as the world’s most powerful passport.
The Asian giant has held the top spot since 2018.
The Henley Passport Index released the ranking on Tuesday.
The passports were rated according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.
Japan passport holders are able to access 191 destinations around the world visa-free.

Singapore, joint number one in 2019, currently has the second most desirable passport on earth with access to 190 destinations.
South Korea and Germany have a visa-free/visa-on-arrival score of 189.
The classification based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) affirmed Asia Pacific (APAC) countries’ dominance.
Experts say the APAC region’s strength will continue as it includes nations with quick recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
Before now, in the index’s 16-year history, European Union countries, the United Kingdom, or the United States, held the top spots.
Over the past seven years, the U.S. passport has dropped from the uppermost to 7th place. The U.K. is presently on the same rank.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, sits in 97th position.
Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, noted that the current standing ranking provides an opportunity to reflect on the upheaval that characterized 2020.
“Just a year ago, all indications were that the rates of global mobility would continue to rise; that travel freedom would increase, and that holders of powerful passports would enjoy more access than ever before.
“The global lockdown negated these glowing projections, and as restrictions begin to lift, the results from the latest index are a reminder of what passport power really means in a world upended by the pandemic”, said Kaelin, the passport index inventor.

Variety magazine scooped that world music’s biggest event may now take place in March.
However, the new date has not been confirmed.
According to the report, a ‘combination of health and travel concerns’ led to the postponement.

Rapper and  producer Dr Dre posted that he was “doing great” late Tuesday after being hospitalized with a possible brain aneurysm.
“I’m doing great and getting excellent care from my medical team,” the music mogul posted on Instagram as reports swirled over his condition.
“I will be out of the hospital and back home soon. Shout out to all the great medical professionals at Cedars. One Love!!” Dre said, thanking his well-wishers.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday, recorded 1,354 new infections of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.
The NCDC confirmed this on its verified Twitter handle.
One death was also recorded in Nigeria.
The figure was the highest ever recorded in one day since the virus was first reported in Nigeria.
The latest figure surpassed the 1,204 cases recorded across the country on Monday, confirming that Nigeria is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus.

Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, MFM, has called on Nigerians to take COVID-19 seriously.
Olukoya urged Nigerians to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 protocols laid down by the Federal Government because the virus is real.
The MFM General Overseer made the appeal yesterday after inaugurating a remodelled University of Lagos, UNILAG’s Senate Building.
He lamented that most Nigerians don’t believe that the virus was real.

“The first thing is to convince the populace that it is real because some people don’t believe it exists. But I am a man of God and I have prayed for so many people with the same infirmity and I know that it exists.
“So, we should not joke with it. People should obey all the rules. And most importantly, we should pray that this pandemic will go away,” Olukoya said.
The cleric urged the government to pay more attention to awareness campaigns targeted at persuading Nigerians to believe that the virus is real.
Meanwhile, Nigeria recorded 1,354 new COVID-19 infections as at Tuesday night.
The figure was disclosed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

One of the magistrates protesting the non-payment of their two years salary in Cross River State, Richard Bassey, has slumped at the gate of the Governor’s Office in Calabar.
The victim was painfully revived by his colleagues and other staff of the Governor’s office in Calabar by pouring water on him.
A witness who gave his name as Godwin Effiom lamented the incident which occurred on Tuesday at the Governor’s office gate and alleged that the Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu drove past when the incident occurred.
“It surprises me about the kind of leaders we have these days, because a deputy governor of a State can pass through the gate of the governor’s office and saw a large crowd trying to revive a victim, and he drove past. It’s unfortunate,” he stated.

Recall that a magistrate, Safiya Iyeh Ashipu, of the Chief Magistrate Court, Odukpani and her two children started the protest in front of the Cross River State Governor’s office over the non-payment of two years salary on Monday.
Ashikpu and her two children disrupted official functions and other government activities at the Cross River State Governor’s Office in Calabar. One of the reasons for the protest was her inability to pay rent.
It was gathered that the State Attorney General paid N210,000 as part payment of the rent. It was informed that the Attorney General’s N210,000 was his personal money and not government’s.
The protesting magistrates who came with their full regalia were at the governor’s office with placards and flex banners protesting the non-payment of their two years salary.
The protesters disrupted official functions at the governor’s office and also blocked the entire entrance to the governor’s office, disrupting economy, social and political activities in the office.

A former Minister of Education, Alhaji Dauda Birma, is dead.
Dauda who was also a presidential aspirant under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) died in the early hours of Tuesday at his home in the Adamawa State capital, Yola.
The Sarkin Gabas Adamawa and Waziri of Garkida was said to have been fairly well before his death.
His associate, Suleiman Yerima, said Tuesday morning that he was with the deceased in the afternoon of Monday, January 4.

His son, Musa Dauda Birma, also stated in a Facebook post, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihin rajiun, I lost a part of me that can never be replaced. May Allah forgive your sins and grant you janna.”
Born1940 in Garkida, Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Dauda Birma served in various capacities in the defunct Northern Region Government.
The late Dauda Birma had marked his 80th birthday in July last year.
In a congratulatory message to him on July 26, 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari had said Nigeria had gained significantly from Birma’s insights into policy matters in his many years of public service and through his participation in the evolution of Nigeria’s democratic experience.
