<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="551" data-original-width="980" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNYJYNyMcyzwFLjZoxw85Kbj6XyQKtoo8rN0Omp0bhGfTOSYqnTEXodE_iHb4nrcdlau8xlzevGYs73wFBbefp9OGl8a67K0xhPJFswWVDmM6tAHcUkBoz4p_RXPrdbuWfO5DajVYeu-UB/s640/dstv.jpg" width="640" /></div> <br /> <br /> MultiChoice Nigeria said on Friday it filed an appeal against last Monday’s order of the Federal High Court, Abuja stopping it from increasing subscription rates to its cable television services.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> But, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) insists the order of the high court stopping implementation of the new tariffs will subsist till the appeal has been heard and ruling given by the court.<br /> <br /> Last Monday, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja issued an order restraining the cable television broadcasting company, its agents or representatives from going ahead with the increment of subscription rates till further notice.<br /> <br /> The order followed an application filed on behalf of the Nigerian government by the CPC in case No. FHC/ABJ/CS/894 to stop any upward review of subscription fees for DSTV and GoTV services.<br /> <br /> Early last month, MultiChoice Nigeria announced its decision to review upwards the monthly subscription rates for its cable television services, namely DSTV and GoTV, with effect from August 1.<br /> <br /> Under the new price regime, the company said the Premium package subscribers pay about 7.5 per cent more (about N15,800) from about N14,700 every month.<br /> <br /> Also, their Compact Plus customers were to pay N10,650, from N9,900; Compact bouquets N6,800, from N6,300, while the Family package was increased from N3,800 to N4,000, with Access from N1,900 to N2,000.<br /> <br /> However, the Director-General of the CPC, Babatunde Irukera, who led other concerned Nigerians to file the application, said in the statement of claims before the court that the action by Multichoice Nigeria contravened an ongoing investigation.<br /> <br /> Other applicants who signed a nine-paragraphs statement of claims included Abimbola Ojenike, Eme David-Ojugo, Moray Adebayo, Teniola Medupin and Florence Abebe.<br /> <br /> In his ruling on Monday, Justice Dimgba said the interim injunction restraining Multichoice Nigeria or its agents and representatives was to halt its “continuing implementation of any increase in subscription rates or price review policy imposing increased charges and costs on the consumers pending the determination of the motion on notice.”<br /> <br /> Also, Multichoice Nigeria was “restrained from further carrying on or continuing any conduct or activity which interferes with or has effect of circumventing the outcome of ongoing investigations by the CPC into the company’s compliance or non-compliance with the February 16, 2016 order pending the determination of the motion on notice.”<br /> <br /> Regardless, MultiChoice Nigeria in a statement sent to NE on Friday confirmed it was served with an interim order by the Federal High Court regarding the price adjustment it implemented on August 1, 2018.<br /> <br /> The company said it believed the order was “an affront to the free market economy.”<br /> <br /> Consequently, it said it had proceeded to file “a Notice of Appeal and an application for stay of execution, pending the hearing of the Appeal.”<br /> <br /> “In light of the application for a stay of execution, the status quo therefore prevails,” the firm said indicating the new tariffs would continue.<br /> <br /> “MultiChoice Nigeria will always operate within the ambit of the law and will continue with the authorities to ensure the best outcome for our customers. We remain committed to providing the best quality of entertainment and premium content at the best possible prices,” it added.<br /> <br /> The spokesperson of Multichoice Nigeria, Caroline Oghuma, said the CPC was served with the requisite court processes.<br /> <br /> Asked to clarify the price regime covered by period for the stay of execution and return to status quo requested by Multichoice Nigeria, Ms Oghuma said the new prices announced by the company from August 1, 2018 was the status quo period.<br /> <br /> Pressed for further clarification about the prices that existed prior to February 16, 2016 when the CPC said it was basing its investigation Multichoice’s compliance, the spokesperson said she would not discuss any further, as the matter was already in court.<br /> <br /> When contacted, the spokesperson of CPC, Abiodun Obimuyiwa, confirmed the consumer protection agency received the court process filed by Multichoice Nigeria on the matter.<br /> <br /> Mr Obimuyiwa said the CPC believes the court order would subsist until the application for appeal was heard and ruling given by the court to either reject or upheld.<br /> <br /> “It is only when the judge has listened to the arguments by the parties in the case and a ruling given. As far as CPC is concerned, the order of the court issued on Monday stopping Multichoice from going ahead with the rates increase subsists till further notice.<br /> <br /> “Until the court rules that the order should be vacated, that order is the status quo reffered to by the application for appeal. What that means is, if Multichoice goes ahead to collect the new subscription rates from subscribers, it would be acting in violation of the court order and will be in contempt,” the spokesperson said.<br /> <br /> Already, the council said on Friday several subscribers to DSTV and GoTV services had complained about their inability to renew their subscriptions based on the pre-August 1, 2018 rates.<br /> <br /> The council said the development may have confirmed that Multichoice Nigeria had gone ahead with the implementation of the new tariffs in defiance of Monday’s court restriction order.<br /> <br /> Consequently, the Council said it had set up a special channel, multichoicecompliance@cpc.gov.ng, for the affected customers to send emails detailing their complaints about their experiences.<br /> <br /> Complainants were asked to state relevant information, including smart card number, name, telephone number, date and time of failed attempt to pay, supporting same with relevant evidence such as a screenshot or document (where necessary).<br /> <br /> “The Council is informing the public that it is a violation of the order of the court for Multichoice to require consumers to pay, or to receive any new rate for their service, from consumers.<br /> <br /> “For clarity, the current, valid and prevailing rate for DStv and GOtv services are the rates that were effective as at July 31, 2018,” the statement said.

Already, l had reported the matter to the police and other security agencies and they are aware of this.<br /> <br /> “Therefore anytime l sleep and wake up and my spirit doesn’t allow me to travel by road, I would call flight operators but just a few days ago, the federal government issued a secular directing that no flight should land in Makurdi airport again.”<br /> <br /> The Governor appealed to the federal government to urgently end the herdsmen killings in parts of the country to pave way for peaceful election in 2019 lamenting that most of the polling units in the crisis affected communities of Benue state were destroyed and taken over by herdsmen who converted them to grazing fields.<br /> <br /> According to him,”The killings across Nigeria is a deliberate attempt by some people either Boko Haram, armed bandits or herdsmen working for the same purpose to disenfranchise large proportion of Nigerians from voting for the leaders of their choice.<br /> <br /> “Amnesty international had come out to disclose that over 19,000 people have lost their lives in Benue, Taraba, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Plateau states to herdsmen attacks and this does not speak well of Nigeria nation especially as we are heading towards 2019,” he said.<br /> <br /> Ortom who lamented that large number of Benue people had become refugees in their own land as a result of ceaseless herdsmen crisis said pockets of killings were still going on in Makurdi, Guma, Logo and Katsina Ala local government areas of the state despite efforts to stem the tide.<br /> <br /> He pointed put that most of Benue’s frontline border communities with Taraba and Nasarawa States had been taken over by herdsmen who sacked the indigenous people from their ancestral homes.<br /> <br /> “This is unacceptable because even though, a goat doesn’t bite, but when you continue to provoke the goat, the goat could turn around and bite you,” he said.<br /> <br /> While calling on international community to show more concern on states affected by herdsmen crisis in the country, the Governor urged traditional rulers to enlighten their subjects on the need to register to obtain their PVCs stressing that it was the sure way to vote out leaders who failed to meet the expectations and yearning of the people.<br /> <br /> Reacting to the allegation by the Governor, National Coordinator of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Alhaji Garus Gololo disassociated the group from the plot.<br /> <br /> Gololo said, “We don’t have problem with anybody in Nigeria or Benue State. What business does MACBAN have with kidnapping? We are not kidnappers or a criminal organization. We monitor all radio and TV broadcasting stations in the country and when you flout the code, you are going to be sanctioned.<br /> <br /> “On a quarterly basis, we will bring out the list of those we had sanctioned and the reasons and post it on our website and distribute to media houses,” Modibbo-Kawu said.<br /> <br /> He said that the commission recently studied the contents of live broadcast of political rallies and discovered that politicians from the ruling party and the opposition were guilty of hate speech.<br /> <br /> He said that broadcast stations would, henceforth, be held liable for such infractions against their practice code.<br /> <br /> “Politicians tend to just say anything on air; they demonise the opponents, they profile them and say the most horrendous things.<br /> <br /> “The political parties are not our licensees, so, we cannot hold them liable. However, the TV stations that broadcast the rally live have an obligation.<br /> <br /> “We are issuing the report on the studies to the government, political parties and broadcast houses that if you broadcast live materials that flout the NBC code, you are going to be held liable.<br /> <br /> “They have to get their acts together and begin to discuss with the people who come to pay heavy sums of money to do live broadcast, that there are certain things you cannot say,” the director-general explained.<br /> <br /> He said that as the 2019 general elections approach, the NBC had become particularly visible, sensitising its licensees to their responsibilities to the nation and the need to respect regulatory code.<br /> <br /> Modibbo-Kawu recalled that in the build-up to the Ekiti election, the Commission sanctioned a couple of stations, especially the state-owned broadcast stations.<br /> <br /> “We were forced by the circumstances of the actions taken there to close the Ekiti Broadcasting Services.<br /> <br /> “First of all, the state government had appointed the DG of the EBS as the DG of Campaign of one of the political parties.<br /> <br /> “The appointment was not in consonance with the objectives of the NBC, so, we wrote a letter to the broadcaster and the governor of the state, but they ignored us.<br /> <br /> “Secondly, when President Muhammadu Buhari visited the state, the governor made a broadcast that the people should not turn out to receive the president.<br /> <br /> “This was beyond politics, so we sanctioned the station,” he said.<br /> <br /> He added that, “Soon after the elections, before INEC announced the results, the state governor went to radio and television to begin to announce his own results.<br /> <br /> “We felt that was the point we had to act and we closed another station.”<br /> <br /> Modibbo-Kawu said NBC also closed down a station which was on test transmission, but engaged in political broadcasting against the NBC code.</div>

I spent over N3 million in the journey. I paid N450, 000 to the person who assisted me from Nigeria while my wife paid N500,000.<br /> <br /> “I made four attempts to cross the Mediterranean but failed on each occasion. It was during the last attempt, when we had almost entered the blue sea that the Libyan militants intercepted our boat, and sent us back to Libya, where we were thrown into the prison. In each of the attempts, I paid N120, 000; so I spent a total of N480, 000 trying to cross over the sea to Italy from Libya.<br /> <br /> “I also paid N700, 000 to regain my freedom when we were dumped at a camp in Tripoli. My people also sent N700, 000 to me with which I initially wanted to procure a return ticket to Nigeria before IOM came to our rescue.<br /> <br /> “So, when you add all those money to the expenses I made during the desert journey and the ones I spent to sustain myself for the over six months that I wasted in the journey, you will agree with me that I spent over N3 million, without any positive result.<br /> <br /> “However, I thank God for sparing my life because many people died in the process. In short, I took part in the burial of some of the dead persons both in the desert and in Tripoli.”<br /> <br /> He thanked IOM for saving him and urged Nigerians to refrain from taking the risk of going to Europe by road, advising that those who insist on leaving the country should endeavour to follow the regular, legal route.<br /> <br /> He called on government at all levels to create jobs for the youths, saying that that is the surest way to discourage Nigerians from embarking on such dangerous journey.</div>

We believe that democracy perishes once the executive arm commandeers the legislature, which is the people’s arm of government.<br /> <br /> “We are horrified that whereas Section 50 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) explicitly provides that ‘There shall be a President and a Deputy President of the Senate, who shall be elected by members of that House from among themselves’, there have been resolute attempts by the APC to impose executive stooges as the presiding officers of the National Assembly since 2015.<br /> <br /> “The most recent and brazen were the raid on the Senate in session by armed hooligans escorted into the chambers by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, to steal the mace of the Senate; simultaneous siege to the official residences of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President; and a siege to the National Assembly by hooded security operatives in clear attempts at illegal regime change of the Senate leadership.<br /> <br /> “Although, the wishy-washy report of the Police investigation refused to name the politicians that worked in concert with the Department of State Services, DSS, to forcefully take over the National Assembly premises, the inciting public vituperations of the APC National Chairman and some serving Senators and leaders leave no one in doubt of the key actors behind the heinous attempts to ruin the nation’s democracy.”<br /> <br /> “Without holding a brief for any of the political interests, Section 50 of the 1999 Constitution and Nigeria’s legislative convention allow bipartisan or even opposition headship of the parliament of which the APC has been the greatest beneficiary.<br /> <br /> “CLO is, therefore, unable to figure out any justification, be it on grounds of law, convention, and morality, for the continuous overheating of the polity by APC leaders over the leadership of the Senate.<br /> <br /> “Two presiding officers of the Senate have been removed since 1999, but on no occasion was any of them held hostage or the National Assembly overran by security agencies. Oshiomole has obviously overstepped his bound.<br /> <br /> “We, therefore, urge your mission/government to not only help engage the APC-led Federal Government with a view to ending the rising political tension and barefaced impunity to an immediate stop, but also to suspend issuance of visas of your country to the listed anti-democratic elements and cancel all valid visas already held by them.<br /> <br /> “CLO has continued to insist on calling the attention of the World and its leaders to the impending confusion in Nigeria because of the obvious monumental implications it will have on human rights and mankind at large in the event that such dastardly acts of these leaders drive our society into avoidable crisis.”<br /> <br /></div>

Reason: Most of the alternative routes announced by the Lagos State Government are currently blocked by trucks.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, had while announcing the closure, advised motorists to use designated alternative routes pending when the bridge would be reopened to traffic.<br /> <br /> Alternative routes<br /> <br /> The designated alternative routes include: Those coming from Lagos-Abeokuta, Agege, Ogba and Ikeja are to make use of Oshodi via Mushin Ojuelegba to connect Carter Bridge into Island; those from Ikorodu, Maryland are to make use of Funsho Williams Avenue, formerly, Western Avenue via Yaba to Oyinbo and connect Eko Bridge into Island. Motorists from Okokomaiko, Festac, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway are enjoined to ply through Ajegunle via Marine Bridge to Ijora to connect Carter Bridge to Apongbon into Lagos Island. Conversely, motorists from the Island are expected to ply Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge into Mainland, while those in Lekki Ajah can also make use of Epe axis through Imota into Ikorodu.<br /> <br /> Accessing alternative routes<br /> <br /> However, accessibility remains a big factor in routes bordering Okokomaiko, Festac, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Ajegunle via Marine Bridge to Ijora, and Carter Bridge to Apongbon into Lagos Island as the areas are still choked by hundreds of illegally parked tankers and container-laden trucks.<br /> <br /> An on-the-spot count done by Vanguard last month revealed that over 12,000 of these articulated vehicles were parked in different locations in that axis.<br /> <br /> A breakdown of this figure then showed that from Iyana Isolo to Tin Can, there were 3,200 trucks parked on the road; Ijora to Palmgrove, 3,485; from Marine Bridge to Ijora, 1850 and down the bridge, 1050; from Stadium to Eko Bridge, 874; from Costain—Stadium-Alaka—Fadeyi, 865; from Berger Suya to Kirikiri Road (New Road Bus stop) 678; from Wilmer Bridge to Awodiora (Ajegunle) 187; and from Coker to Costain Bridge, 63. The entire Berger area had 671 of these articulated vehicles of which 210 were parked on the bridge.<br /> <br /> A visit to the affected areas, yesterday, showed that the situation has not changed much, with different articulated vehicles still occupying key access roads and completely impeding the flow of traffic. It is a development many see as likely to render unworkable the alternative routes announced by the Lagos State government for use by motorists pending the reopening of the Third Mainland Bridge.</div>
