People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction President Muhammandu Buhari for allegedly bringing in people from outside the country to influence the election in his favour.<br />
<br />
Chairman of PDP, Uche Secundus, made the call in Enugu during the PDP rally for election of the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and other candidates of the party in the 2019 elections. He accused Buhari of planning to influence the election in his favor and called on INEC to sanction Buhari over alleged plans to influence the election.<br />

He urged Enugu people to vote for a man (Atiku) that will not sleep on duty, adding “PDP is Enugu and Enugu is PDP” In his speech, Atiku urged Ndigbo not to miss the opportunity of producing the vice president, adding that vice president is from the South East.<br />

Malaysia returnee has admitted that he advised suspected kidnapper, Collins Ezenwa a.k.a. E-money, who was killed during a shootout with the police in Imo State recently, to quit his police job and leave the country when he (E-money) ventured into kidnapping.<br />
<br />
Thirty-seven-year-old Uche Obi, while narrating his relationship with the deceased suspected kidnapper, said he first met E-money in Mbaiese area of Imo State in 2017 while the latter was still serving as a policeman.<br />
<br />
He said that he became friends with E-money after he (E-money) begged him for money.<br />
<br />
Obi said: “I met him at a police checkpoint in Mbaise while I was on my way to my village in Mbano and we became friends. E-money had no car at that time so he was always making use of my car. All of a sudden, I got a call from him to come to his house.<br />

On getting there, I discovered that he had dollars everywhere. “I asked him how he got the money and he told me that he got it from a woman who came to complain about a case in his police station and his team made away with the money found in the woman’s bag.<br />
<br />
I then advised him to leave the country and stay in Malaysia for two years so that by the time he returned, no one would know how he made his money. “Before he took the trip, E-money buried a huge sum of money in dollars in Owerri, and his sister, Lillian, was the only person who knew where the money was kept.<br />
<br />
While he was away, his sister called his brothers and they took some of the money and shared it among themselves. They started buying cars and landed properties. “When he heard about it, he rushed back to the country. He took the properties and started spending the rest of the money. He also bought several buildings and cars in Owerri, and each time it seemed like the money was going down, he would take a trip and return with more money.<br />
<br />
“I didn’t know where he was getting the money from because whenever he wanted to make a call, he would ask me to leave. “I had a quarrel with him before he died, and this was because I kept advising him to control himself and stop being boastful.” Obi further said that after E-money was killed and operatives of the Inspector General of Police, Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) took over the investigation, his phone number was tracked and that led to his arrest.<br />

While Obi was arrested for being a member of E-money’s robbery gang, he insisted that he was only a friend to the deceased suspected kidnapper.<br />
<br />
He said: “I told them (police) that I was just a friend, but our relationship went sour because I was always advising him. I told them that while we were friends, E-money never allowed me to come close to him enough to know the source of his income. And whenever he wanted to have any serious business discussion, he would ask me to leave.<br />
<br />
“I told them that the two guys who were killed alongside E-money were known to me but I didn’t know what they were all doing. I told IRT operatives that I was not surprised when the Imo State Police Command identified them as a gang of kidnappers because E-money’s movements were highly suspicious.<br />
<br />
“When the IRT people arrested and questioned me, I told them all I knew about E-money, including going with him when he bought his first building. But since I did that, his family has been against me. I have been receiving threat calls from phone numbers I don’t know.<br />
<br />
The callers are telling me that they are angry that I showed the police the location of the building in Owerri. But I had no option than to do what I did.” Obi said his return from Malaysia to Nigeria and his subsequent arrest was occasioned by some issues he had with members of his family.<br />
<br />
He said: “My wife took everything I have; that is why I came back to Nigeria. I met E-money when I returned to Nigeria from Mayalsia and I wanted to invest the money I made, and I came with members of my family who were living with me. “The business I came for did not work out well and things did not work the way I wanted. Then my wife sold my SUV and some other property and made away with the proceeds to Cambodia. “I met E-money when I was<br />

driving to my village and he was a policeman on checkpoint in Mbaiese area of Imo State. He stopped me and asked me to give him some money, but I told him that I didn’t have any money with me. We exchanged numbers and became friends.<br />
<br />
“He had no vehicle then, so he used to drive my car. Later that year, my wife made away with my property and I became helpless. Then he called me to come to his house, and when I got there, I saw dollars everywhere. His brother was also carrying dollars.<br />
<br />
“I asked him how he got the money and he said he and his team arrested a woman that had a box full of dollars. He said he and his team stole the money and shared it among themselves.<br />
<br />
“He told me that the one I saw was his share. I then advised him to travel out of the country and stay for two years so that when he returned, everyone would think that he made his money abroad. He took my advice and left the area for three weeks. He later showed up again and started buying properties.<br />
<br />
“We started sleeping in hotels. I was always going with him to buy some of the properties. He does not know how to calculate money in dollars, I was always there with him whenever he was buying any of his properties.<br />
<br />
“Sometimes when we were in the hotel, he would leave us without telling anyone where he was going to only to return in the morning. He did this whenever the money he had with him had gone down.<br />
<br />
“Along the line, I started advising him to stop bragging about the money that he had, because whenever we were in a hotel, he would threaten the owners that he wanted to buy the hotel.<br />
<br />
“He had two wives but one of them did not live with him. He kept his cars for the brothers of his second wife.<br />
<br />
“I didn’t benefit anything from him. All I got was just the drinks he was buying for me. We were moving round the hotels in Enugu, Aba, Owerri and Port Harcourt. I was the person who followed him to buy the hotel in Enugu for N220 million.<br />
<br />
“He changed his phone number whenever he felt he was receiving too many calls on any line. He was about opening a bureau de change firm when he asked me not to come close to him again.<br />
<br />
“Before he was killed, he called me. So, after he died, I switched off my phone because I feared that the police would be looking for me. I called my pastor and he prayed and said that nothing would happen to me since my hands were clean.”

The Economist Intelligence Unit Africa said on Friday that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar will win the February 16 election.<br />

It said the margin of victory was getting narrower as the election approaches, but Atiku and his political party will win the historic election.<br />

“#NigeriaDecides2019 : Less than 2 weeks before #Nigeria‘s presidential election. Abubakar has floated idea of corruption amnesty. It is arguably an impolitic time for such a delicate proposal,” EIU Africa tweeted.<br />

“Abubakar is hard-pressed to convince voters that he is a clean politician, having been on the receiving end of numerous graft allegations in the past.<br />

“We retain our forecast for #Abubakar to win, but expected margin of victory is narrowing as the poll approaches.”<br />

The federal government is offering free train ride for commuters on the Lagos-Abeokuta section of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail for two months with effect from Wednesday.<br />
<br />
The free ride will be flagged off on that day by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi announced yesterday in Lagos.<br />
<br />
Amaechi who was on a routine inspection of the project expressed satisfaction at the standard of work done by the contractor, the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC).<br />
<br />
He said two coaches would be deployed from Itakpe-Warri railway station to make four coaches which would run the free ride for two months.<br />
<br />
His words: “I am impressed. The Vice-President will ride the train on February 6. He is coming to flag off the passengers’ use of the first phase from Lagos to Abeokuta which would reduce travel time from 1 hour 30 minutes to 45 minutes.”<br />

The minister said that work was in progress on the various train stations within the numerous corridors.<br />
<br />
He said efforts were being made to expedite work between Agbado and Apapa axis of the project.<br />

According to the minister, the rail project will further bring about economic development in the area and Nigeria when ready.<br />
<br />
The minister inspected, among others, the Bolade-Oshodi, Iju-Fagba, Ijoko rail tracks to assess the laying of rail tracks on the axis<br />
<br />
Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), had said that the track laying of the project was moving towards Lagos, adding that 1.5 kilometres tracks were laid everyday.<br />
<br />
“They have done a lot in laying of tracks between Abeokuta, Itori, Papalanto, Kajola, Ijoko towards Lagos corridor.<br />
<br />
“Within seven days, the track laying will reach Iju towards Agege corridor of Lagos State.<br />
<br />
“From here to Iju its 10 kilometres, and we are laying 1.5 kilometres on daily basis and by first week of February we will do a test run to Abeokuta from Lagos.<br />
<br />
“All the formations have been put in place to expedite the tracks laying,” the NRC boss had said on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
Jerry Oche, the NRC Lagos District Manager, said that the train, when completed, would be travelling by 150 kilometres per hour on the 156 kilometres Lagos – Ibadan trip in less than two hours.<br />
<br />
“With the new standard gauge you can reside in Ibadan and be working in Lagos which is a very good development to people and for our economy,” he said.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Friday advised suspended Justice Walter Onnoghen to resign as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).<br />

He gave the advice when members of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the state took their protest to the Government House in Kaduna.<br />
<br />
El-Rufai, who received the protesters’ solidarity letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the suspension of the CJN, said with just over 20 years in public service, Justice Onnoghen possibly has more money than Aliko Dangote, the richest African.<br />
<br />
According to him, the suspension of Onnoghen was in order, saying that even Dangote cannot forget one million dollars in his bank account.<br />
<br />
“The case of Justice Onnoghen is the case in which somebody who has worked in government for past 20 years suddenly has millions of dollars in his account.<br />

“He has admitted, but says he has forgotten about them.<br />
<br />
“I want to express happiness to all of you for coming together to convey this very clear statement from the people of Kaduna State that in Kaduna we do not support corruption, in Kaduna we do not support injustice, in Kaduna State we are 100 per cent behind the integrity of our president.<br />
<br />
“I can assure you that the message you have given to me will be delivered to the president today.<br />
<br />
“The case with Justice Onnoghen is a very sad one. Othman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, wrote that the worst form of corruption you can find in any public service is judicial corruption.<br />

“This is because when the president is corrupt or the governor is corrupt, it is to the judge that ordinary people can take their case to. When the judge himself is corrupt, it is the highest form of corruption and must never be condoned.<br />

“The president did the right thing by asking him to step aside pending investigation. It is the proper thing to do. It is what is done in every organised and civilised society.<br />
<br />
“Unfortunately, some people in Nigeria are trying to make white black and black white. They are using technicalities to delay bringing this man to Justice.<br />

“Mr President did not remove Onnoghen from office. He said in honour of the Judiciary, he should step aside so that the charges against him can be investigated and prosecuted,” the governor said.<br />

Leaders of the Civil Society organisations, Messrs Zubairu Muktar and Abubakar Abubakar, said all well-meaning and focused Nigerians interested in the progress of the country must continue to support the anti-corruption war of this administration.<br />

They commended Buhari for taking the decisive step to restore the lost glory of the judiciary by rejuvenating our nascent democracy.<br />

“It is indeed a step very timely and commendable,’’ Muktar said.<br />

The leadership of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has threatened to resume the industrial action it suspended on May 30, 2018 if the issues in dispute are not resolved.<br />
<br />
The group has consequently scheduled to meet on Monday to decide the next step to take in its disagreement with the government.<br />
<br />
Briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, JOHESU President, Comrade Biobelemoye Josiah, said: All branch executive representatives in both federal and state institutions are expected to attend the meeting. We urge all members to await further directives.”<br />
<br />
The fresh threat to embark on strike has been said to contravene the interim order of injunction against the leadership of JOHESU.<br />
<br />

According to a group, Kingdom Human Right Foundation, any attempt by the union to go on strike will “amount to disrespect and a deliberate affront to the majesty of honourable court. Such contemptuous act will warrant the invocation of disciplinary jurisdiction of the court for committal proceedings. ”<br />

The group reminded the union that the May 17th 2018 order by the Industrial Court still subsists.<br />
<br />
But JOHESU president yesterday said the government was the first to contravene the court order by applying no work no pay policy.<br />
<br />
He noted that workers’ salaries for the month of April and May, 2018 was unjustly withheld.<br />
<br />
Josiah further alleged that the no work no pay policy of the government only applied to JOHESU, while other groups get paid when they go on strike.<br />
<br />
As part of the efforts to press home it’s demand, the union in collaboration with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has concluded plans to stage a national rally in Abuja to draw the attention of the federal and state ministries of health to their plight.<br />
<br />
Among issues at stake are upward adjustment of the CONHESS salary structure; unjustified withholding of the salaries of JOHESU members for the months of April and May, 2018 and headship of hospital departments. Others are non promotion of members on CONHESS 14 – 15 as directors in some federal health institutions, and implementation of consultancy cadre to JOHESU members.

A massive consignment of endangered wildlife animal parts allegedly smuggled from Nigeria has been intercepted in Hong Kong.<br />
<br />
The consignment is estimated at $7.90million, Hong Kong customs officials said yesterday.<br />
<br />
The officials labeled the seizure a record.<br />

It was bound for Vietnam.<br />
<br />
Found in the container were pangolin scales and more than 1,000 ivory tusks.<br />
<br />
It is estimated that 500 elephants and up to 13,000 pangolins may have been killed to amass the contraband.<br />

The Vietnam News Agency also reported yesterday that authorities in the port city of Hai Phong had discovered another 1.4 tonnes of pangolin scales in a shipping container from Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, are critically endangered. They are coveted for their meat — considered a delicacy — and their scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat aliments from cancer to arthritis.<br />
<br />
“It is clearly impossible that the pangolin species can withstand such high rates of poaching, trafficking and trade. Eight tonnes is outrageous,” said Alex Hofford, campaign manager for conservation group WildAid in Hong Kong.<br />
<br />
WildAid estimates 100,000 pangolins are poached from the wild each year, with all eight species of pangolin in Africa, and especially Asia, now under threat.<br />

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have again failed to reach a compromise to end the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.<br />

<br />
Senator Chris Ngige , Minister of Labour and Employment while addressing newsmen after a closed -door meeting with the union on Friday in Abuja said the meeting was protracted.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said , “ The meeting was protracted, but the good news is that we have gotten to the end of the tunnel.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We met them halfway and we have finished the gray areas and on the issue of N50 billion , we have offered what we have.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We do not have N50 billion and we cannot do N 50 billion , but we have offered them something reasonable .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ So they have to take it back , and go and present to their members” .<br />
<br />
<br />
Ngige , however , expressed hope that students would return to school soon , saying “ We will know when they will go back by Thursday ” .<br />
<br />
<br />
Earlier , Prof . Biodun Ogunyemi , ASUU President said the meeting had been adjourned to February 7.<br />

“ So , far on the level of progress made so far , I cannot tell you that now until I tell my members .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ It is the feedback of the last meeting we came to present to government today .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ But right now, we have a new set of information that we have to go and present to our members . Until we tell our members , we cannot tell you , ” he said .<br />
<br />
<br />
Ogunyemi noted that progress had been made on the ongoing negotiations .<br />
<br />
<br />
He added that “We are making progress and the progress we are making is for everybody ’ s interest and stakeholders will benefit at the end of the day .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We will be meeting on Thursday , after which , we will address the press.<br />
“ We have dealt with all areas , so the progress we have made must first be related to our members.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ So until we tell them, and they tell us what to do that , that is only when we can relate to the press. The meeting is adjourned till Thursday .<br />
<br />
<br />
The strike commenced on November 5 , 2018.<br />
<br />
<br />
The lecturers are demanding for the implementation of some agreements with the Federal Government since November 2009 .<br />
<br />
<br />
It was gathered that one of their major demands is the implementation of university revitalisation fund.<br />

There was pandemonium in Abeokuta on Thursday as supporters of the All Progressives Congress and Allied Peoples Movement in Ogun State clashed during campaign tour of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state.<br />

It was gathered that trouble started when the campaign teams of the state APC governorship candidate , Dapo Abiodun , and the team of a member of House of Representatives representing Abeokuta North / Odeda/Obafemi - Owode constituency and a candidate of the Allied People Movement , Mikky Kassim , met at Elega junction in Ward 4 of the local government.<br />

A source within the campaign trains told our correspondent that the two groups met at the junction where a road construction was going on , causing traffic.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was gathered that Kassim reportedly alighted from his vehicle to control the traffic but tension built up when the supporters of APC sighted him and assumed that he was at the place to attack Abiodun and his supporters.<br />

The armed policemen in both campaign teams however , managed the situation as they fired into the air to scare the hoodlums.<br />
<br />
<br />
However , gathered that despite the efforts by policemen to avert the clash between the supporters of the two parties, they attacked themselves with dangerous weapons.<br />
Supporters from both sides sustained injuries while many properties were vandalised.<br />
<br />
<br />
As at the last count no fewer than 12 persons sustained injuries.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was also gathered that few minutes after the clash , supporters of APM who were waiting for the arrival of Kassim at Ward 5 were attacked as many supporters including elderly people were injured from the scene.<br />
<br />
<br />
One of the victims who spoke with our correspondent at her hospital bed where she was receiving treatment , Alhaja Larogun , said some masked thugs allegedly wearing Abiodun ’ s T-Shirt and caps attacked the APM supporters with dangerous weapons including gun and matchetes.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was further observed that two vehicles parked in front of a family house belonging to Alhaji Sarafa Isola , the campaign Director - General of the APM governorship candidate , Adekunle Akinlade , had their windscreen destroyed.<br />
<br />
<br />
Those persons who sustained injury were rushed to the state hospital while a barber’ s shop beside the campaign ground was also destroyed.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) , Alhaji Atiku Abubakar Thursday vowed to complete the second Niger bridge linking Delta and Anambra States , if he emerges president .<br />

Atiku who also promised to reactivate the abandoned Warri Port as well as all the abandoned Federal Government projects in Delta State , stated this in Asaba, Delta State in continuation of his nationwide presidential campaign.<br />

Atiku who accused the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) led Federal Government for failing to delivered in all its promises , said<br />

“These people they call APC just come to deceive us . Everything they promised they failed to deliver.<br />

“They failed to deliver on economy , they failed to deliver on security, they failed to deliver on jobs , why would you vote for them for God sake ?<br />

Secondus called on the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) not to rig the general elections .<br />

“We know that government is pressurising INEC to rig this election but if they rig this election , they are looking for war .<br />

“So if they want peace , let them rig the election because everybody is ready for this election .<br />

“We also want to advice our security agencies and we know that they are good people , protecting lives and properties , which is their primary responsibilities .<br />

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will continue its aggressive campaign against vote buying and inducement of voters in the country.<br />
<br />
<br />
Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated this at an event by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday.<br />
<br />
<br />
The event was for FRSC Commanding Officers on strategic goals and issues of general elections held in Abuja.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that vote buying and inducement was a menace that was detrimental to democratic principle.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We have heard about vote buying; the response is greater sensitisation so that people will not surrender their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) to vote buyers.<br />

<br />
“I appeal to media organisations to help us sensitise the public in that respect and the security agents should help in making arrests.<br />
<br />
<br />
He explained that the election would be conducted in 1,558 constituencies with 73 candidates contesting in the Presidential election billed for Feb. 16.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We have 1,066 candidates vying for 29 governorship positions; 1,904 candidates competing for 109 senatorial districts.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Also, 4,680 candidates are vying for 360 House of Representatives Federal Constituencies while 14,785 candidates are contesting for 991 State Constituencies,” the chairman said.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that the party primaries for the nomination of candidates to various positions had been “the most acrimonious ever in the history of Nigeria’s democracy”.<br />
<br />
<br />
Yakubu said that from the primaries and congresses held between August 2018 and January the commission had so far been joined in 639 cases in court.<br />
<br />
<br />
He added that no fewer than a million Nigerians have registered as ad hoc staff for the conduct of the exercise.<br />
<br />
<br />
The chairman further said that provisions had been made for albinos and Persons With Disabilities to cast their votes with ease during the elections.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday said he could vouch for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, to reposition the country, a position different from what he had written in his memoirs.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo made the statement in Lagos while speaking at the 2019 Island Club Quarterly Business Lecture.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Atiku had earlier delivered a lecture titled: “My vision to get Nigeria Working again”.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo said he believed that Atiku has the experience, the capacity and passion to move the country forward.<br />
<br />
He said Nigerians should no longer find his support for the former vice president strange going by what he said or wrote about him in the past.<br />

He reiterated that he stood firmly by whatever he said in the past about Atiku and indeed President Buhari.<br />
<br />
He, however, said the PDP candidate had demonstrated what was expected of a committed and sincere leader by owing up to his past mistakes and showing remorse.<br />

Obasanjo added that Atiku had not only apologised to his political party and the nation, but also apologised to him for the past mistakes he made as his deputy.<br />
<br />
He said that Atiku was not infallible like every other human being and that he, (Obasanjo) would be playing God by not forgiving the former Vice-President.<br />
<br />
“I have been called names because of my position on Atiku Abubakar, the Wazirin Adamawa.<br />
<br />
“Everything I have said as far as I have knowledge of Atiku, I have not retracted and I stand firmly by it because it is, the best of my knowledge, true.<br />
<br />
“And neither has what I have said and written about Buhari been controverted, if anything, it has been confirmed and proved beyond any shadow of doubt.<br />
<br />
“But Atiku has done things which are absolutely imperative for a leader to be followed and believed.<br />
<br />
“First, know who you are and present yourself as you are – a human being in blood and flesh and susceptible to human mistakes and human frailties.<br />
<br />
“Don’t cover up with sanctimonious veneer of bogus integrity, incorruptibility, uprightness, goodness and false figures and statistics, all of which are contrived to deceive, to cheat, to plunder and to destroy.<br />
<br />
“Atiku never claimed to be a saint and I never described him as such. I will never so describe any human being alive let alone calling him a Messiah.<br />
<br />
“On an occasion in the past when I said that someone was not a Messiah, some Nigerians out of bad “belle’’ were up in arms.<br />
<br />
“For me, as a Christian, the only Messiah I know and have is Jesus Christ and even then, the man aspect of Him was imperfect while the divine aspect of Him was perfectly messianic.<br />
<br />
“Secondly, a leader must be honest to himself and to the people he serves or he wants to serve.<br />
<br />
“He must identify and acknowledge his situation, mistakes, shortcomings and inadequacy; show remorse where and when he has erred, seek forgiveness and repent; and not passing the bulk or keep blaming others and fail to accept responsibility.<br />
<br />
“Atiku accepts responsibility for his mistakes, shows remorse and seeks forgiveness from his political party and subsequently from Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“He asks for forgiveness from me and as a believer, a Christian as such, I forgave him in accordance with the teaching and instruction of my Saviour.<br />
<br />
“For, if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you.<br />
<br />
“But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins (Matt 6:14-15 NIV).<br />
<br />
“If anybody blames me for forgiving Atiku, I leave such a person with God Almighty, especially as both Christian and Islamic clerics joined Atiku to visit me to seek forgiveness.<br />
<br />
“Anybody who does not forgive when forgiveness is sought with contrite heart cannot be a true believer and should not expect the forgiveness of God,” he said.<br />
<br />
He said past disagreements notwithstanding, Atiku demonstrated great leadership qualities when he was in office as Vice-President.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo said he believed with the experience and courage of Atiku, he remained the best candidate to move the country forward.<br />
<br />
“I must reiterate that Atiku is not a saint. Who is? But from what I know of him, he will be a performer in all respects. I can say that again from my personal experience.<br />
<br />
“He knows the problems and he handled some of them in the past.<br />
<br />
“We now know that both Buhari and Atiku have issues and all of us as human beings have one issue or the other in different magnitudes.<br />
<br />
He also commended Island Club for providing the platform for leaders to articulate their visions for the country through the lecture.<br />
<br />
He said the series of the Club’s lecture had helped enrich discourse on nation-building.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that prominent Nigerians at the lecture included Senate President, Bukola Saraki, PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus and Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce.<br />
<br />
Others at the lecture included a PDP chieftain, Chief Bode George, PDP candidate in Lagos, Mr Jimi Agbaje and a former governor of Ogun, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

The Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar Wednesday promised to establish Electoral Fraud Commission to try anyone found infringing on electoral laws.<br />

Atiku said the present government lacks political will to punish offenders.<br />
<br />
He and his running mate Peter Obi spoke on The Candidates programme aired live on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abuja.<br />
<br />
According to him, he (Atiku) and Obi have what it takes to end poverty in the country.<br />
<br />

He said he has been able to lift 45,000 persons out of poverty in his home state of Adamawa.<br />
<br />
“A few years ago, I set up a microfinance bank and I brought in someone from Bangladesh and you know they are the best in the world in that area. I told him I wanted to lift people out of poverty and I want you to dedicate 80 per cent of your loans to women. You know how many persons I was able to lift out of poverty? 45,000,” he said.<br />
<br />
The former Vice President said Nigeria needed a pro-business and private sector driven leadership to create jobs for its 21 million unemployed youths.<br />
<br />
According to him, one of our major plans is to create jobs in the agriculture sector which has the largest capacity for job creation in the country.<br />
<br />
On corruption allegations against him, Atiku said he is the most investigated public officer in the country who had never been found wanting.<br />
<br />
He lamented the dearth of middle class in the country, blaming President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for the collapsed of the middle class.<br />
<br />
On Boko Haram, he said the set back by the military was as a result of lack of equipment and welfare.<br />
<br />
If elected into office, he promised to investigate military hierarchy indicted in short-changing the soldiers.<br />
<br />
On Shiites/military clashes, Atiku said military has nothing to do with the Shiites.<br />
<br />
According to him, police should have been allowed to deal with them.<br />
<br />
On farmers/herders’ clash, he said both of them need to be enlightened on the existing laws.<br />
<br />
He lamented the collapse of nomadic education, promises to revive it.<br />
<br />
This, according to him, will minimise the movement of nomads and allow them to concentrate in a particular area.<br />
<br />
Atiku refuted fraud allegation his wife, saying his wife had never been indicted or accused of such offence.<br />
<br />
“My wife has not been indicted and she has not been charged, so there is no way you can hold her accountable, she has been traveling to America very often,“ he said.

The Director, Strategic Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), says one of the reasons the United States dropped on the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index was that the US gave the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, a visa.<br />

Keyamo said this in a tweet while reacting to America’s slide on TI’s corruption perception index.<br />
<br />
The spokesman, who posted a link to TI’s report said, “Anything that gravitates towards Atiku is always tainted with corruption. Now, the US gives him a ‘special waiver’ as a candidate to come in for a few days and see the result.<br />
<br />
The senior advocate had in the past alleged that the US had secretly indicted Atiku for corruption hence the former Vice-President’s reluctance to travel.<br />

Keyamo had dared Atiku to travel to US and see if he would not be arrested. However, when Atiku travelled two weeks ago, Keyamo said the PDP candidate paid a lobbyist to help him travel.<br />
<br />
According to TI, the US last year slid down the rankings of a global corruption index as America’s system of checks and balances faced growing threats on Donald Trump’s watch.<br />
<br />
The US lost four points to score 71 out of 100 on the watchdog’s 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index, sending the country tumbling out of the top 20 for the first time since 2011.<br />
<br />
“The low score comes at a time when the US is experiencing threats to its system of checks and balances as well as an erosion of ethical norms at the highest levels of power,” TI said in its annual report.

The Presidency on Wednesday gave reasons why President Muhammadu Buhari did not seek support for the All Progressives Congress candidates during the party’s rally held in Owerri, Imo State, on Tuesday.<br />

It said the President addressed a mixed crowd of voters across political parties, who were united in endorsing his re-election, despite having their local candidates for other positions.<br />
<br />
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, while speaking to journalists, explained that in such a mixed crowd, the President could not speak of support for the APC candidates alone but must talk about all the parties.<br />
<br />
Shehu noted that this did not mean that the President did not want the APC candidates to win elections in Imo State, saying that Buhari was solidly behind his party’s candidates.<br />
<br />
“The massive crowd that gathered to welcome President Buhari in Imo State was made up of not only supporters of the APC in the state, but also supporters of other parties who are united by their love for the President and their desire to see him re-elected, despite the local candidates they support,” Shehu told reporters.<br />
<br />

The Presidency added that in the circumstances he found himself in Imo, the President could only advise the people who turned out to receive him to vote according to their conscience.<br />
<br />
“While President Buhari is fully behind the APC, he welcomes endorsements from those who do not belong to the ruling party but is also sensitive to their support for non-APC candidates at the local level.<br />
<br />
“It would have been insensitive of him to offend his non-APC supporters by ignoring their local affiliations,” Shehu stated.<br />
<br />
He said by raising the hand of Senator Hope Uzodinma, the APC governorship candidate in Imo State, at the rally, Buhari had shown where his preference was and this did not call for a debate.<br />
<br />
Shehu added, “President Buhari is for the APC in every state and there is no doubt about that, despite the immense cross-party support he is enjoying.”<br />
<br />
Recall that while addressing the rally, Buhari did not mince word in urging the crowd to “vote for candidates of your choice across parties” to the chagrin of the APC members.<br />
<br />
The people reacted by cheering and clapping for the President.<br />
<br />
Governor Rochas Okorocha, who does not support Uzodinma’s governorship bid, joined in the cheering.<br />
<br />
When the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, realised the President’s error, he was seen trying to whisper to Buhari to make a correction.<br />
<br />
The President then responded by telling the crowd again to vote for the APC candidates.<br />
<br />
There is a big crack in the Imo APC, threatening its electoral fortunes next month.<br />
<br />
While Okorocha wanted his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, to be the APC governorship candidate, the National Working Committee of the party endorsed the primaries conducted by the Uzodinma faction.<br />
<br />
In December 2018, Nwosu, with the support of Okorocha, defected to the Action Alliance and became the party’s governorship candidate.<br />
<br />
However, both the Okorocha group and the Uzodinma faction said they would vote for Buhari on February 16.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The two candidates are still holding to their guns as governorship candidates of the party.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Our findings revealed that Senator John Owan Enoh was given the party’s flag and declared a governorship candidate of the party for Cross River State during the zonal rally of the party in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Pastor Usani is claiming that he is still in court with the party and still holding on to the governorship position of the party in the state, since, according to him, the court has not disposed of the matter.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We wish to use this medium to make some clarifications which further counters those misgivings by the Minister:</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“All the institutions relevant to the emergence of candidates including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Secretariat of our party and even the Law Enforcement Agencies have the name of Sen. John Owan Enoh as the party’s Governorship Candidate in Cross River State.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“That in a matter instituted by him (Pastor Usani Usani) regarding the issue of candidacy, a Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi delivered judgment rejecting his prayers to be made the party’s candidate.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“In fact, the court verdict derecognized him as having taken part in the process of party primary elections that led to the emergence of candidates.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Sir Ochala said Pastor Usani should tell the world at what point was he emerged as the party’s Governorship Candidate as he continues to parade as such.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“This latest attempt by the Minister to impose himself on the gullible public, in our consideration confirms our earlier belief that Pastor Usani was working had to actualize another agenda distracting APC from focusing on elections victory” he said.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Anwar narrated how Bafarawa cajoled the state chairmen of the party to support Buhari after they had said they would not vote for him in the primary.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He wrote: “Buhari was not even able to secure all the 7 votes from his geo-political zone (north-west). When Bafarawa saw how dismally Buhari’s performance had been, he not only suspended the meeting for a break but also requested the state chairmen to stay behind for some announcements. He later cajoled the chairmen and explained to them that his preference was for Buhari to emerge the winner. In response, they all assured him that, although they were ready to do whatever he requested, as their leader, they were still not inclined to vote for Buhari.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“On enquiry, the chairmen explained that it would be foolish for them to vote for someone who did not even know their names. They charged that whenever he came across them, the best he could do to address them was to use generic terms of “Mister” or “Alhaji,” depending on whether a chairman came from the South or the North, respectively. They sensed the futility of supporting someone who did not bother to know them while he was seeking for their support.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Okorocha, they said, had drawn close to everyone of them, even giving them N250,000 each to supplement their travel expenses.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">BAFARAWA ‘TURNS THE TABLE’</b></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In an interview with the author, Bafarawa, who is now a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said: “I appealed to the chairmen to change their mind because of the prospects of the party at the polls if it were Buhari that emerged as our flag-bearer. I also directed one of my staff, Abdullahi Bida, a relation to Buba Galadima, to give each of them five hundred thousand naira (500,000). I later called General Buhari to meet me at the Niger State Governor’s Lodge, where I was staying. He came around 4 a.m. together with Sule Hamma.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I informed him about the efforts I had made to turn the table against Rochas. I also explained to him that I had arranged for a private meeting between him and the state chairmen, later at 2 p.m. Furthermore, I begged him to be patient with all the criticisms and the complaints they would lodge against him.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Additionally, I gave him five million naira to give them to fuel their vehicles back to their respective states. He collected the money and thanked me for all the trouble that I took to see him through. He later handed over the money to them at the end of their meeting.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">THE RESISTANCE</b></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Anwar wrote: “The rigging of the mock election in favour of Buhari was not without resistance. Some of the southern aspirants, who learnt of the private meeting organised between Buhari and their state chairmen, invaded the venue and accused Bafarawa of nepotism. He responded by reminding them how he also arranged for similar meetings between some of them and the state chairmen.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Nwodo famously made his “my heart bleeds for Nigeria” speech while pulling out from the race at the convention ground.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Obasanjo eventually won the election, credited with scoring 24.4 million votes while Buhari got 12.7 million.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">After an unsuccessful second attempt in 2007, Buhari’s associates accused the ANPP governors of betraying him and left the party to form CPC.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Buhari had last week suspended Onnoghen and immediately appointed Tanko Mohammed as the acting CJN.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Explaining his reason, the President said he suspended Onnoghen, following an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, asking him to wield the big stick.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Reacting to the saga, the National Judicial Council, NJC, had yesterday issued a query to both the suspended CJN and the man on acting capacity.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In the query, NJC gave both Onnoghen and the acting CJN seven days to respond to the petitions brought against them.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">However, an insider who spoke on the ground of anonymity said the query issued to both Onnoghen and Mohammed was aimed at removing them from office.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The source stressed that NJC’s move was aimed at clearing its name of being political.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to the source: “If you look at the situation on ground, some politicians seem to be on the side of Onnoghen while the Buhari’s government is backing Tanko Mohammed, this the NJC is not very pleased with. This can lead to suspicion.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">” Because of this development, the NJC is silently working towards removing both Onnoghen and Tanko Mohammed because the body wants to maintain its image of being apolitical and to frustrate politicians rooting for the two gentlemen.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“And this process can only be successful when we take the first step; which is the query we issued both embattled NJC and the one on the acting capacity.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“When they both respond, the body will now deliberate and possibly decide to relieve both of them and a ew recommendation will be made for their replacement.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">When asked if the government will accept the new recommendation by the NJC, the source said: “When a recommendation is made and Buhari government refuses to accept, then Nigerians would know that the current anti-corruption fight is rubbish. It will become clear that the reason Onnoghen was suspended in the first place was political.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”This move by the NJC is a litmus test to the government in power. It’s an opportunity for the government to clear its name regarding the allegation of Onnoghen’s ‘prosecution.’ We will make our recommendation at the end of the day and see how the federal government will react to it,” he said.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The Governor spoke when he inaugurated at the Government House, Maiduguri, the APC campaign council and different committees tasked with various activities.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said: “There are two mistakes we should never make. The first mistake will be to underestimate our opponents in any party. There are those who assume that I, Kashim Shettima underrates opponents. They say so because they don’t know me well enough.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I do not underrate opponents. What I do is to foresee opponents and neutralize them long before the contest. There were those who thought I was being naive by the way we have been handling things but as Allah would ordain it, the more they underestimate us, the more we succeed, and we succeed without being arrogant.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We recognize that no one succeeds alone. So, I do not underrate opponents. In fact, I overestimate them and that is why I start working well ahead.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Ladies and gentlemen, even with the immense popularity of President Buhari, I want us to campaign vigorously and mobilize votes for him. I also want us to know, that helping Buhari will not be limited to getting him serious votes. It will also entail mobilizing and working legally to deny his opponents votes in the state.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The second mistake we should never make is for anyone to nurse the intention of working against an APC candidate in anyway. As stake-holders you should bear in mind that, your political reputation will lie with your collaborative effort to win all elections within your area.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“For instance, loosing MMC, Chibok, Hawul, Askira Uba, Biu or anywhere to PDP will only make stake-holders from these local government areas to loose the legitimacy of bargaining for any political privileges within the APC in Borno State.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“More over, you should always bear in minds that electorates are not robots that you tell to vote APC in one ballot paper and vote PDP in another ballot paper. From history, anti party activities are never hidden and they have unpredictable outcomes.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“And I think one question we should wonder is what if we work against any of our candidates and yet he or she wins? When you work against someone as he or she wins an election, it automatically means that you are not relevant. I think it is wiser to help someone you disagree with to win the election so that at least, you have something to boast before such person.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I have sounded these notes of caution not based on any particular realities but based on hypothetical possibilities that are inherent in Borno’s democratic experiences. I urge all of us to bury whatever grievances we have and work together. There are some candidates who were angered in 2015 after losing out.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Today, they are flag bearers of our party. I urge us to work for each other. We should always remember that the APC is a vehicle on a journey with all of us on board. When a vehicle is moving with you, it will be suicidal to remove any part of that vehicle otherwise everyone will crash. Perhaps the person who removes the part of the moving vehicle, could be the first casualty. Allah Ya kiyaye!” The Governor said.</div>

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen , has dragged the Federal Government before the Court of Appeal , challenging his suspension.<br />

The appeal was filed on Monday by his lawyers : Wole Olanipekun ( SAN ) , Adegboyega Awomolo ( SAN ) , Kanu Agabi ( SAN ) and James Onoja .<br />
<br />
<br />
Onnoghen , who was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari following an ex parte order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal last week, questioned the powers of the CCT to do so .<br />
<br />
<br />
The suspended CJN based his appeal on four grounds , adding that he was not given a fair hearing by the CCT before the order to swear - in Justice Tanko Muhammad was given.<br />

The appeal read in part, “The chairman and a member of the Code of Conduct Tribunal erred in law and violated the right of the appellant ( Onnoghen ) to a fair hearing when they made the order ex parte that he ( Onnoghen ) shall step aside as CJN and Chairman of the National Judicial Council over allegations of contravening provisions of the Code of Conduct and Tribunal Act Cap C15 Laws of the Federation 2004 pending the determination of the motion on notice dated January 10 , 2019 . ”<br />

He asked the court to rule that the order was null and void.

“ This is not the first time he has beaten me , in fact , this is the third time . I tried to explain to him what happened but he turned a deaf ear , ” she stated.<br />

She also told the court that her husband does not show her love and care whenever he was in her room , praying the court to dissolve the marriage as she was no longer interested in the union.<br />

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has said IPOB will hold a referendum on the sovereign state of Biafra on February 16, a date the Independent National Electoral Commission has set aside for presidential and National Assembly elections.<br />

Kanu in a statement by spokesman for IPOB, Emma Powerful, said the group would come out with the modalities for the referendum in a few days time.<br />

The statement read in part, “We wish to announce officially to the people of Biafra both home and in the Diaspora, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom that our supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is currently in London to join his family and see his child he hadn’t seen because of his illegal detention.<br />
<br />
“He will also discuss with IPOB top family members in London to finalise the way forward for the Biafra referendum that will hold on February 16, 2019.”<br />
<br />

It added, “Kanu is currently meeting with IPOB high command in Europe to perfect plans for the referendum which will go side by side with the February 16 presidential poll.”

The Senate on Monday filed a suit before the Supreme Court praying for among others, an order reinstating Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The Senate action came after it cancelled its scheduled plenary earlier billed for Tuesday (today).<br />
<br />
The Clerk of the Senate, Mr Nelson Ayewoh, who announced the cancellation in a statement signed by him, did not give reasons for the action.<br />
<br />
He only explained that the federal lawmakers would resume on February 19.<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a><br />
<br />
But the Special Adviser (Media) to the Senate President, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, in a statement explained that the cancellation was due to the last-minute decision by the Senate leadership to seek judicial interpretation to Onnoghen’s suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.<br />
<br />
In the suit marked SC.76/2019, the Senate asked the apex court to declare the suspension of Onnoghen without a support of two-thirds majority of the Senate as a violation of section 292(1)(a)(i) of the constitution.<br />
<br />
The suit also asked the apex court to issue an order restraining the two defendants in the suit – President Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami – from continuing or repeating the violation of the constitution and disregarding the power of the Senate in respect to the suspension of the CJN.<br />
<br />
The three prayers sought by the Senate read, “A declaration that the suspension, by the President, of Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen from his office as Chief Justice of Nigeria on or about January 25, 2019, without an address calling for the removal, supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate is in violation of section 292(1)(a)(i) of the constitution and therefore null and void.<br />
<br />
“An order rescinding or setting aside the suspension of Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen from his office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and restoring him to the said office.<br />
<br />
“An order restraining the defendants from continuing or repeating the violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and disregarding the powers of the Senate at the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
Buhari had while announcing the suspension of Onnoghen hinged his decision on an ex parte order made by two of the three members of the Code of Conduct Tribunal where Onnoghen had been charged with six counts of non-declaration of assets.<br />
<br />
The CCT order had directed the CJN to step aside from office pending the conclusion of his trial and ordered the President to swear in the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Tanko Muhammad, as the acting CJN.<br />
<br />
But the Senate, through its counsel, Mr. Paul Erokoro (SAN), has, in its suit which was filed on Monday, faulted the President’s action.<br />
<br />
It argued that the President could not on the directive of the CCT suspend the CJN without two-thirds majority of the Senate or appoint Muhammad as the acting CJN without Senate’s confirmation.<br />
<br />
The plaintiff submitted two questions for determination.<br />
<br />
One of the questions is if having regard to section 292 and Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Nigerian Constitution and section 21 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, the President could not “suspend” or “prevent” the CJN from performing the functions of his office “on the directive of the Code of Conduct Tribunal or for any reason whatsoever, without an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate calling for the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
The other question for determination read, “Having regard to section 231 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and in particular, sub-sections (1) and (4) thereof, can the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria appoint an acting Chief Justice of Nigeria when there is no vacancy in that office and when the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria is fit and able to perform the functions of the office and without the recommendation of the National Council and confirmation of such appointment by the Senate.”<br />
<br />
A Legal Assistant in the Office of the Senate President, Mr. Sambo Idahi, in an affidavit filed in support of the suit, said he attended a meeting of the principal officers of the Senate held on January 25, 2019 when the issue of Onnoghen was extensively discussed.<br />
<br />
He said the meeting discussed the CCT’s ex parte order which the President anchored his action on and the swearing-in of Justice Muhammad as the acting CJN.<br />
<br />
According to Idahi, Saraki informed the meeting that he was not consulted on the matter and never received any request from the President or any other person or authority to debate the issue.<br />
<br />
He added that Saraki said Buhari had never requested the Senate’s approval of Justice Muhammad as the acting CJN.<br />
<br />
The affidavit read in part, “On Friday, the 25th day of January, 2019, at about 5.40 pm, I was present at a meeting in the Senate Building attended by Principal Officers of the Senate, where the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria was extensively discussed.<br />
<br />
“The discussions at the meeting centred on the public announcement made by the President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, on the 25th day of January, 2019, in which he revealed that he had suspended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen, and appointed Hon. Justice l. T. Muhammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria in an acting capacity. The President’s address during the swearing-in of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad was also discussed at the meeting as well as the ex parte order made by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on which the President had acted.<br />
<br />
“Hereto shown to me and marked Exhibit A is the said President Muhammadu Buhari’s address. The tribunal’s ex parte order is Exhibit B herein.<br />
<br />
“I printed out Exhibits A and B from a HP desktop Computer and HP Laser Jet Pro 4ooMo1a in the office of the Senate President. We use the computer and printer aforesaid daily in the normal work of the Senate and throughout the period of their use, both have functioned accurately. Information has been regularly supplied to the computer in the ordinary cause of those activities information of the kind from which the exhibits were derived and the computer and printer have behaved properly and nothing has ever happened to make us question their reliability and accuracy.<br />
<br />
“The President of the Senate informed the meeting that the Senate was not consulted on the matter and never received any request from the President or any other person or authority to debate the issue or present an address to the President for the removal or suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“The Senate President and other persons at the meeting repeatedly stated that the Senate had never met to vote on the removal or suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and that no address had been passed by the Senate and presented or sent to the President of Nigeria for the Chief Justice to be removed or suspended.<br />
<br />
“The meeting also noted that the Senate was not requested to confirm and did not confirm the appointment of Hon Justice l. T. Mohammed as acting Chief Justice.”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>APC senators disown Saraki’s legal action</b><br />
<br />
But the APC caucus in the Senate has dissociated its members from the legal action filed by Saraki on behalf of the federal lawmakers at the Supreme Court.<br />
<br />
The Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, in a statement on Monday said there was no resolution of the red chamber which empowered Saraki to take such an action.<br />
<br />
The statement read, “It has come to the notice of the Senate APC caucus that the Senate has approached the Supreme Court for the interpretation of the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, by President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
“For the records, the Senate never met to take such a resolution and at no time, mandated anyone to approach the Supreme Court on this matter, on its behalf.<br />
<br />
“Consequently, the Senate APC caucus dissociates itself from the said request for the legal interpretation of the (CJN) suspension.”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>We only recognise Onnoghen as CJN – NBA</b><br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the NBA has said it will only recognise Onnoghen as the CJN.<br />
<br />
It also ordered its members across the country to boycott the courts on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against Onnoghen’s suspension.<br />
<br />
Rising from its emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee on Monday, the NBA said due process was not followed by Buhari in suspending Onnoghen and swearing in of Muhammad as the acting CJN.<br />
<br />
The NBA also set up a committee led by two former Presidents of the association, Chief Wole Olanipekun and Abubakar Mahmud, to liaise with lawyers serving in the Buhari administration with a view to finding a solution to the problem.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>CCT suspends Onnoghen’s trial indefinitely</b><br />
<br />
The CCT has adjourned hearing in the case of false assets declaration filed against Onnoghen, indefinitely.<br />
<br />
The CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar, who announced the adjournment on Monday, said it was in obedience to the interim order granted by the Court of Appeal, Abuja.<br />
<br />
The appellate court had on Thursday ordered the tribunal to stay proceedings pending ruling on an application filed by Onnoghen.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>67 parties reject Onnoghen’s suspension</b><br />
<br />
Meanwhile, 67 political parties on Monday opposed Onnoghen’s suspension, describing it as unconstitutional.<br />
<br />
The parties, including the PDP and the Social Democratic Party, in a document signed by their chairmen, said Buhari’s action coming less than three weeks to the elections was suspicious.<br />
<br />
Also, a former President of the NBA, Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), said he had submitted a petition against Justice Tanko Muhammad, who was appointed last Friday as the acting CJN by the President.<br />
<br />
Agbakoba said this just as the police and other security forces sealed off the office of Onnoghen in Abuja on Monday.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the deployment of security officers in the office of suspended CJN was ordered by Muhammad.<br />
<br />
The 67 political parties, which on Monday protested against the suspension of the CJN, said they were very disturbed by the illegal act.<br />
<br />
“The CJN, as a judicial officer, can only be removed from office by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate for his inability to discharge the functions of his office or appointment or for misconduct or contravention of the Code of Conduct,” the 67 parties stated.<br />
<br />
The parties noted that Onnoghen’s suspension and the appointment of Muhammad as the acting CJN was based on an improperly obtained order of the CCT, thus making it illegal.<br />
<br />
They said Buhari must do the right thing by reversing immediately his illegal suspension of the CJN.<br />
<br />
Agbakoba submits petitions against acting CJN, Tanko<br />
<br />
In a statement from his chambers on Monday, Agbakoba said he submitted his petition to the NJC, asking it to determine the propriety of Justice Muhammad accepting to be sworn in by the President in place of Onnoghen.<br />
<br />
According to Agbakoba, by submitting himself to the President to be sworn in as acting CJN, Muhammad lent himself to constitutional infraction by the executive arm of government.<br />

Insisting that the President violated the law in suspending Justice Onnoghen, Agbakoba cited Section 153 of the constitution, saying the law was clear on how a CJN could be removed.<br />

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has once again defended Buhari for suspending Onnoghen.<br />
<br />
It alleged that the case against Onnoghen was much more than misconduct, adding that there were suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars which it said were traced into the suspended CJN’s personal accounts.<br />
<br />
It said these were all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law.<br />
<br />
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohamed, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.<br />
<br />
Mohamed said, “Some have argued that the Justice Onnoghen issue should have been referred to the NJC to handle. They would have been right if Justice Onnoghen had been accused of professional misconduct, which is what is within the purview of the NJC.<br />
<br />
“The allegations against Justice Onnoghen go beyond professional misconduct. It is the alleged breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. And only one body is statutorily empowered to deal with this: the Code of Conduct Tribunal.”<br />

Mohammed added, ‘’This whole issue is about the country’s highest judicial officer, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, being accused of a breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, and the legal and moral conundrum surrounding that.<br />
<br />
“‘It is about the suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the suspended CJN’s personal accounts, all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law.<br />
<br />
“It is about the Hon. Justice Onnoghen himself admitting to the charges that he indeed failed to follow the spirit and letter of the law in declaring his assets, calling it a ‘mistake.’<br />
<br />
“And it is about him refusing to take responsibility, instead opting to put the entire judiciary on trial.<br />
<br />
“Please remember that Justice Onnoghen has been given the opportunity of fair hearing, but he has been abusing his position and the judicial process by filing frivolous applications and even dodging service of process.”<br />
<br />
Mohammed said the media did not get it right by its reportage of the events, saying a section of the media had taken sides in the matter.<br />
<br />
Asked why the Federal Government was quick to act on the order of the CCT but neglected judgements on the detained former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.), the minister said he was not conversant with the case.
