Tony Chiemelu Obizoba, who claimed he was coming to lead a one million-man march in Enugu to demand Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s scorecard.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Reacting to the development, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said he had long time ago cautioned about the activities of fifth columnists who were uncomfortable with Gov. Ugwuanyi’s good rating ahead of the 2023 elections.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Okwu said it was baseless for any right thinking and honest person to say there was lack of good governance in Enugu State when all indicators and statistics showed otherwise.</p> <span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span> <p><br /></p> <p>He noted that hiding under a non-existing alias, ‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly’ was part of the game plan by politicians who feel so threatened by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s rising profile.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We read with consternation the report in a section of the media credited to one faceless person, who goes by the name Amb. Tony Chiemelu Obizoba and who claims to be the Director-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Our first thought was to ignore the faceless report, but we had to respond so as not to allow it to have credence in the minds of some gullible and uninformed members of the public.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Apart from the fact that there is no such group Igbo land, all the claims made in the said statement are false narratives. Contrary to the baseless claims, Enugu State has remained one of the safest States in the country, even in the face of the current unrest in the South-East and this is as a result of the quality leadership being provided by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“It is also not in doubt that no governor, since the history of Enugu State, has put up the number of quality infrastructure at the rural communities compared to what Gov Ugwuanyi has done.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Good governance is not measured by bogus projects but accountability, transparency, human-oriented infrastructure projects, welfarism, among others, and the governor has since scored above average on all these areas as has been attested by credible organizations and agencies.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“It, therefore, beats our imagination that some faceless groups would come up with claims against the Governor. As we said earlier, this is all part of the 2023 game. But we warn seriously that those behind this game should tread with caution. We know them already and we are going to expose them, together with their pay masters in the next coming days.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The Enugu people are treasuring a peaceful State and we will not fold our hands to allow some selfish people to truncate the peace in the name of selfish politics. It is only God that gives power, it is only God that knows who will live till 2023; for that reason, people should stop playing God just to demonize their perceived political opponents.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Having said this, we urge security agencies to be on red alert and stop any move to destabilize Enugu State. On our own part, we are already waiting for the said group, if at all they exist. Should they go and import people to come and set fire in Enugu State, they shall receive commensurate fire from the entire Igbo youths.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Okwu urged the Governor not to be distracted but to continue his good works for the people of Enugu State.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The entire Igbo youths are behind the Governor, a man of the people, a peace maker, a unifier. He should not lose sleep over the antics of these desperadoes,” Okwu declared.</p>

How do you lose a child in a safe zone and whose birthday is today? Sending love and light to Master Sylvester’s family and loved ones. Happy birthday young champ, we promise you justice. #justiceforslyvester.”</p> <span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span> <p><br /></p> <p>She added, “@dowencollegelagos, we will be leaving flowers and gifts outside your gate. Because today is a child’s birthday that died under your care!</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Please, if you are in Lagos, leave a little gift and prayer at the gate of Dowen College. Thanks.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Addressing the school, she said, “The crime was a horrible one but you have made it even more horrendous by lying to our faces or just plain ignorant of the affairs of your kids! Whichever way, we caught you and we need justice.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Reports had emerged that Oromoni was bullied and beaten by fellow students. The supposed injuries from the beating led to his death, according to a Twitter user with the handle @perrisonoromoni, who claimed to be the boy’s cousin.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>However, in a statement on Wednesday, the school denied all allegations stating that Oromoni was neither bullied nor beaten but only complained of hip pain after playing football.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Contrary to the school’s statement, the victim’s cousin rolled out photos and video evidence, which corroborated the fact that the child was bullied and beaten; an action that led to his death.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Celebrities and Nigerians on social media has demanded justice for the late Sylvester and has rolled out the hashtag #justiceforsylvester to voice out their agitations.</p>

The matter must be investigated, perpetrators apprehended, punished, and made an example of, to serve as a very strong deterrence against future occurrences.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Okowa extended his prayers and support to the Oromoni family at this difficult time.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Oromoni was reported to have died from internal injuries he sustained during an assault by fellow students.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>However, Dowen College Principal, Mrs. Adebisi Layiwola, in a statement denied any form of bullying or attack on the student.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The Lagos State government on Friday shut down the school and immediately ordered investigation into the incident.</p>

Nigeria is on its way to becoming a leading industrial and trading nation in Africa.</p> <p>“To achieve this, our Government focused on policies, projects and programs that support private sector investors.</p> <p>“We introduced numerous fiscal incentives and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the viability of investments.</p> <p>“Despite the adverse global economic environment of recent years, Nigeria’s investment environment has greatly improved both at the national and sub-national levels.”</p> <p>Buhari also assured captains of industry, and entrepreneurs, who have shown interest and commitment to further enhance trade and investment relations with Nigeria, that his administration would continue to work with them to improve the business climate, especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) comes into full effect.</p> <p>The Nigerian leader also used the occasion to express profound gratitude to his hosts, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and the Emir of Abu Dhabi, for their unwavering commitment to strengthening trade and investment relations between both countries through various initiatives, partnerships and support.</p>

It touched part of my house but my neighbours’ house was completely destroyed. We thank Allah that they barely left the house when this happened,” Goni said.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Another resident of the estate, Alhaji Bukar whose house was also destroyed by the rockets said that he was in his room when the rockets hit his house and part of the wall fell on his wife and his daughter but they were unhurt.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>According to Alhaji Bukar, “I came back from the mosque and fell asleep; suddenly, I heard a large sound, then I heard my wife screaming.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Also reports from Gomari ward showed that the explosion fell near a mosque and also destroyed some houses but there was no casualty.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>A resident of the area who spoke to newsmen said the military just left the area.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“They came and removed all the ordinances of the explosion. This has brought back fresh memories but we thank God no life was lost. May God continue to protect us,” he said.</p>

We are determined to ensure no one will be left behind.”</p> <p>The UN agency’s report found that the unusually sharp rise in the number of people online suggests that measures taken during the pandemic contributed to the “COVID connectivity boost.”</p> <p>There were an estimated 782 million additional people who went online since 2019, an increase of 17 per cent due to measures such as lockdowns, school closures and the need to access services like remote banking.</p> <p>According to the document, users globally grew by more than 10 per cent in the first year of the COVID crisis, which was the largest annual increase in a decade. But it pointed out that growth has been uneven.</p> <p>Internet access is often unaffordable in poorer nations and almost three-quarters of people have never been online in the 46 least-developed countries.</p> <p>Speaking in Geneva on Wednesday, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Director of the ITU said: “The internet divide runs deep between developed and developing countries. Only a third of the population in Africa is using the internet.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“In Europe, the shares are almost 90 per cent, which is the gap between those two regions of almost 60 percentage points.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“And there is what the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, has called in his Common Agenda blueprint for the future, “a connectivity Grand Canyon”.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The report found that younger people, men and urban dwellers are more likely to use the Internet than older adults, women and those in rural areas, with the gender gap more pronounced in developing nations.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Poverty, illiteracy, limited electricity access and a lack of digital skills continued to hinder “digitally excluded” communities, ITU noted.</p>

He will be in charge of cleanship; supervising painting, electricians, carpentry, cutting of grasses, and others. He will be supervising civilians.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“He is no longer under detention. He has been released to move around to serve his punishment.</p> <p>“Because he was detained on November 15, that one month will start counting from then, which means he is going to be engaged till December 15. By then, he will be off the extra duty.”</p> <p>A military source, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, explained that an extra duty means that the comedian is the “Minister of Works in the Barracks” for the period of the punishment.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The source also said Cute Abiola should know better as a military man and should not have appeared in a police uniform in one of his skits, let alone ridicule the sister agency in the process.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Lawyer to Cute Abiola, Fatai Adebanjo, in an interview with our correspondent, confirmed the development and expressed delight, saying the wife and mother of the Kwara-born comedian who had been distressed since the ordeal began would be relieved.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We appreciate the Nigerian Navy for the consideration and we know that we are counting days for him to rejoin his family,” Adebanjo said.</p>

Now we have the first batch here and other batches are also coming up soon,” he said.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Haruna added that the wheat cultivation programme was being implemented by CBN, in collaboration with the Wheat Farmers, Processors and Marketers’ Association of Nigeria (WFPMAN).</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Speaking at the event, the State coordinator of WFPMAN, Ibrahim Sadiq noted that farm inputs being distributed by CBN to the farmers were meant to enable them improve their productivity.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>According to him, each of the benefitting farmers received items, including assorted fertilisers, seeds and chemicals, worth N360,000 to cultivate one hectare of land.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>While saying that the idea behind the distribution of the items was to boost wheat production in the country, Sadiq disclosed that the benefitting farmers were expected to repay the loan in kind at harvest.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The idea is to boost wheat production. It is about the second largest consumer of our foreign exchange, apart from oil. So, we need to farm and we need to feed ourselves,” he asserted.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Meanwhile, the district head of Warji, Alhaji Alhasan Samaila-Boyi, has warned the benefiting farmers against diversion of the inputs.</p>

Imagine the value of N4.5 billion at that time and what impact such a large amount of money would have had on the Benue economy now, if it had not been diverted by the Akume administration.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“State funds are public funds that belong to all of us and any one who presides over our public funds should be willing to be accountable for his actions.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We are all aware of the damage corruption has done to the economy of Nigeria. When criminal acts such as the one the Akume administration is being accused of are allowed to go unpunished, the society suffers the dire consequences.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“When Akume was willfully accusing Governor Ortom the other day, he thought that we had forgotten all about the financial atrocities he committed during his time. Now is that time of reckoning we warned him about. He who comes to the table of equity must come with clean hands.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We advise the Benue State Government to take the matter further to the courts and not limit it to EFCC investigation. This is a very serious corporate malfeasance against Benue State which must be redressed.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We also want to warn that we not going to accept anything short of justice on this matter. We won’t also accept plea bargain or a political solution of any kind.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Akume has insulted Benue people for too long. Let him have his day in court to prove his innocence.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We urge the EFCC to immediately swing into action and get to the root of the matter so that justice will be done to the people of Benue State, bearing in mind that no one is above the law.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Benue Youth Forum assures the people of the State that it will stop at nothing to ensure that we get justice in this case on behalf of our people so that the looted funds will be brought back into our treasury to enhance the development of the state.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Consequently, we hereby give EFCC a 14-day ultimatum with effect from Tuesday November 30, 2021, to invite Senator George Akume for questioning and thereafter commence his prosecution; otherwise, we youths of Benue State will occupy the Commission’s premises and demand for justice.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We support Governor Samuel Ortom and his administration and will support any just cause his administration initiates to enhance the development of our state.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Benue is the only state we have as our heritage. We will therefore not allow saboteurs to get away with their acts of treachery, corruption and impunity”.</p>

Who are those to benefit more if it is indirect primaries? So, it is important that Nigerians should know why there should be electronic transmission of result in order to save our democracy,” he stated.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>He said any electoral system that allowed security agencies and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission to be used to manipulate the process wouks not yield accountable governance.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>He also commended the INEC for the conduct of the Anambra State Governorship election.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Now, they have performed well in Anambra State, everybody is praising them. But when they did not perform well in Rivers State, should we praise them? We cannot. When a general in the Army will convert a whole division to INEC office, will you be happy?” He queried.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The call by Governor Wike is coming few weeks after he threatened to challenge the Electoral Act in court if the President signs it in its current form that allows for direct primaries.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The guest speaker, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, who delivered the ThisNigeria inaugural lecture blamed the drafters of the Nigerian constitution for the country’s lack of national cohesion.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Something as fundamental as a constitution, the debate and the issues that ought to form the kernel of our governance have never been subjected to the intellectual rigour that is required.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The result is that we have never debated our constitution based on the peculiarities, the cultural expectations, the hopes, the anxieties, the fears of ordinary Nigerians,” he noted.</p>

She came barefoot with only a wrapper and she didn’t have a bacha (hut) so she was squatting on another person’s own.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The next three days, she was in labour and we took her to the National Hospital in Abuja here and we were told to bring 100,000 but we told them that we do not have such money that they should please try and save her life.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“They said they can’t do anything, that we IDPs are disturbing them. That was how the woman and her baby died in the hospital. They even refused to release the corps for us because we could not pay,” the disclosed.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>According to her, she was angered by the incident which prompted her into midwifery to save the lives of other women in the camp.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“I learnt how to be a midwife from my grandmother. I started delivering babies on January 2, 2015, so from that year till date, I have delivered a total of 125 babies in this camp,” she stated.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Mrs Liyatu told our correspondent that she has been sensitizing households in the camp to embrace family planning due to lack of funds to train the children.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“I have been telling them that people who have four to five children should do family planning because we are facing a lot in this camp, we are not collecting salary.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“And these children are not going to school and women keep getting pregnant. God will hold us responsible for the children that we are bringing to this world without training them,” she noted.</p>

Do you think that he will stay on until the summer if Manchester United are eighth?</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“For me, it’s quite easy. If Ralf Rangnick can’t handle Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s not a great coach.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The greatest coaches of this world have always managed to work with the best and most difficult characters.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“So if Ralf Rangnick can’t do that, he won’t be a good coach.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“So I think he will find a way and I also think that they have talked about this before,” Fjortoft added.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“I don’t think Ralf Rangnick arrived at Old Trafford before Cristiano Ronaldo was told, or Jorge Mendes.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“In the short term, he needs results. The man was killed very close to the village and before any alarm could be made, the attackers ran away.</p> <span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span> <p><br /></p> <p>“The village had been under severe attacks of suspected Fulani militias, killing, burning houses and destroying our crops. The village has been totally destroyed by the attackers and we are left with virtually nothing to hold unto.”</p> <p><br /></p> <p>When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige told newsmen that already, the DPO in charge of the area confirmed the incident and had also briefed the Commissioner of Police, while a team would investigate to unearth the perpetrators of the act.</p>

As we remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS this year, we also acknowledge the terrible death toll the coronavirus pandemic has taken and continues to take.</p> <span><a name='more' id="more"></a></span> <p><br /></p> <p>“Going forward, we cannot afford to lose focus on the urgent need to end the inequities that drive AIDS and other epidemics around the world. It has been 40 years since the first HIV cases were reported. Yet, in Africa and globally, it remains a major public health concern.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Last year, two out of every three new HIV infections occurred in the African Region, corresponding to almost 2 500 new HIV infections every day. Sadly, AIDS claimed the lives of 460 000 people, or a shocking 1 300 every day, in spite of free access to effective treatment.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The challenges notwithstanding, Africa has made significant progress against HIV in the past decade, reducing new infections by 43% and nearly halving AIDS-related deaths. In the Region, 86% of people living with HIV know their status, and 76% are receiving antiretroviral therapy.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We also salute Botswana, which is on the home stretch to eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission in what is a truly remarkable public health success. Only 16 countries have been certified for eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission, none of which had as large an epidemic.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“It’s taken more than two decades of hard work by leaders, health workers and communities, illustrating what is possible when the health and welfare of mothers and children are prioritized.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“The continent as a whole is, however, unlikely to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, after we fell short of the expected 75% reduction in new HIV infections and 81% reduction in AIDS-related deaths by 2020. Despite the very high percentages of people living with HIV who know their status, and treatment rates, new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths are not decreasing concomitantly.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“It remains critical for us to reach those who are fuelling the epidemic, addressing the persistent inequities in the provision of quality care and interventions. For instance, in West and Central Africa last year, key populations and their sexual partners accounted for 72% of new adult HIV infections.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Yet punitive laws, policies, hostile social and cultural environments, and stigma and discrimination, including in the health sector, prevent them from accessing services.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“In Sub-Saharan Africa, young women are twice as likely to be living with HIV than men. For adolescents aged 15 to19 years, three in every five new infections are among girls who don’t have access to comprehensive sexuality education, who face sexual and gender-based violence and live with harmful gender norms. They also have less access to schools than their male peers.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“With COVID-19, people living with HIV appear to be at elevated risk for virus-related illness and death. Nearly 70% live in the WHO African Region, where only 4.5% of people are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“As efforts to tackle COVID-19 continue gathering force, and the world prepares itself against future pandemics, we risk repeating many of the same mistakes that have kept us from ending AIDS.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“Addressing inequality is critical to ending both AIDS and COVID-19 and preventing future pandemics – potentially saving millions of lives, and safeguarding our society.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“We must ensure that everyone, everywhere, has equal access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care, including COVID-19 vaccinations and services.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>“This World AIDS Day, I urge governments to prioritize investment in health funding for community-led, human rights-based, gender transformative responses. We must boost our essential health workforce, and secure equitable access to life-saving medicines and health technologies”.</p>

It added that 14 recommendations fall outside its powers and would be forwarded to the Federal government for consideration.</p> <p>On the report that 9 protesters were killed during the protest at the Lekki Toll Gate, the government described the claim as baffling, saying that apart from listing out their names in that form on pages 297-298, the JPI offered no explanation regarding circumstances of their death. It said that the names simply sprang up at, 297-298 of the report without any justification. </p> <p>The statement read in part: “It is quite astonishing that in the list of eleven (11) deaths set on pages 297-298, two (2) of the names appeared twice (Kolade Salam,  Folorunsho Olabisi as Nos. 37 and 38). Furthermore, the person ben, as No. 46 Nathaniel Solomon who testified as a witness and petit the JPI in respect of his brother who he alleged died at LTC, himself listed as having died at LTG on 20th October 2020, Remarkably, Nathaniel Solomon’s deceased brother (Abuta Solomon, was then also listed: as‘No.2 on the list of persons who died at LTG. The only victim of gunshot injury from LTG was picked up at 7:43, on 21* October 2020 after the curfew commenced (see page 99 Furthermore, there was no shred of evidence regarding who shot him.</p> <p>“Another substantial inconsistency in the JPI Report was the award of compensation to only one (1) out of the alleged nine (9), listed as “deceased” which showed that the JPI itself had doubts as to the death of eight (8) other allegedly deceased persons on its list. See page 304 of the JPI Report.”</p> <p>The government also picked a hole in the justification for the award of one Serah Ibrahim, saying that she was neither a Petitioner nor a Claimant before the JPI.</p> <p>“The JPI also surprisingly awarded the sum of N10M to one Serah Ibrahim (listed as No. 14 on Page 304 of the Report). Serah Ibrahi was neither a Petitioner nor a Claimant before the JPI. On Page 179 0 the Report, Serah Ibrahim testified on oath that she did not have a petition before the Panel; neither did she have any claims for compensation. This award to Serah Ibrahim is also contrary to t provisions of section 13 Tribunal of Inquiry Law 2015 (Cap. T6 La of Lagos State) which prescribes that only witnesses requested summoned by a Tribunal of Inquiry is entitled to witness fees subject to the consent of the Attorney General. Serah Ibrahim did not testify at t request or summons of the Tribunal. See pages 17-18 of the Report for the list of summoned witnesses,” the paper stated.</p> <p>On the basis of what is considered as fundamental inconsistencies in the findings of the JPI regarding the nine (9) deaths at LTG, the state government maintained that it rejected the claim. It added that the report was rejected because the finding was clearly and manifestly not supported by evidence.</p> <p>The government added that the JPI attested to the fact that there was no contrary to that Professor Obafunwa that only one person died at LTG of gunshot wounds on 21st October 2020.</p> <p>On some other recommendations, Lagos State Government said it has no control over the internal affairs of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that the recommendation will therefore be forwarded to the appropriate authorities namely the Federal Government of Nigeria, National Economic Council, Police Service Commission and Nigeria Police Force.</p> <p>It also said that it would set up a separate statewide Helpline for human rights abuses in addition to its existing Emergency Toll-Free (767 & 112) Helplines, assuring that the recommendation will also be forwarded to National Economic Council.</p> <p>On police brutality, the government said that out of the 22 recommendations, it would only accept four and will forward 18 recommendations to the Federal government. It added that out of the 18, three recommendations overlap which it has also accepted.</p> <p>It, however, added that it lacks the powers to investigate and fish out police officers as recommended by the JPI on pages 249-254 of the report.</p>
