The South-West governors cried out and devised Amotekun as a solution or part-solution.  We have yet to see how successfully that will be operated. Other zones are clamouring for a solution because in no state and in no geopolitical zone is life and property safe and secure.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “Criminality is the order of the day.  And it cuts across the entire nation.  Insecurity is one issue of commonality among Nigerians, no matter their tribe, language, religion, geographical location, gender, age or social position.’’<br /> <br /> He recalled that the Northern Elders’ Forum, through its spokesperson, Akeem Baba Ahmed, had declared President Buhari a failure on account of persistent insecurity within the nation.<br /> <br /> The former president stated, “I leave out economy which is in the doldrums and fighting corruption where you see more heat than light and which is festering like a bad sore. That, to me, is what reform of federating units and restructuring is all about and not about break-up or disintegration. Insecurity brought about by widespread criminality of Boko Haram, insurgents, herdsmen/farmers conflict, terrorists, bandits, armed robbers, militants, kidnappers, abductors and human traffickers is a new phenomenon that is ravaging the entire country.’’<br /> <br /> According to Obasanjo, it is evident that no ethnic group or geopolitical zone and even the Fulanis in Nigeria are collectively satisfied with the present situation in spite President Muhammadu Buhari being a Fulani man.<br /> <br /> “I am, of course, discounting invidious and irredeemable Fulani fundamentalists and hegemonists. Federal security architecture, as organised and operated by the present government, cannot give any individual or group hope, let alone assurance of security within Nigeria,’’ Obasanjo noted.<br /> <br /> He further said that from the beginning of June, there had been agitations and protests of a revolutionary nature in Mali.<br /> <br /> Obasanjo stated, “Not that I am afraid of revolution, no, not at all, but I love and cherish peace and, of course, not peace of the graveyard.  If I am concerned about security issues in Mali because of possibility of flow-over to other parts of West Africa, I should be more concerned about security in any part of Nigeria. I have not lived for the demise of Nigeria nor for its destruction or incapacitation in any form.  Rather, I have lived to make and see a great and united country.’’<br /> <br /> The former president noted that there was a time when kidnappers, militants, and human traffickers ravaged the East and the South-South and the North was relatively unaffected.<br /> <br /> He added, “Now, no part of the country can claim to be safe from the menace and insecurity caused by terrorists, armed robbers, human traffickers, kidnappers of all sorts, cattle rustlers, insurgents, bandits and herders/farmers conflicts.<br /> <br /> “We are all challenged to put our thinking caps on, join hands and seek solutions together, otherwise, we will be destroyed piecemeal.’’<br /> <br /> He said the country was not out of the woods yet regarding COVID-19, adding that awareness must continue to disabuse the minds of the ordinary people being made to believe that COVID-19 was unreal or that the disease belonged to the rich.

Lagos, Osun threaten fresh COVID-19 lockdown

Delta, Rivers had 46; Ogun, 23; Edo, 22; Osun, 22; and Ebonyi, 21.<br /> <br /> FCT had 20; Kaduna, 16; Ondo, 10; Imo, 9; and Abia, 9. Gombe had 5; Plateau, 4; Bauchi, 4; Ekiti, 2; and Anambra, 1.<br /> <br /> Due to the rising number of cases each day, Lagos and Osun state governments have threatened fresh lockdowns if the people failed to abide by government protocols such as social distancing and wearing of face masks in the public.<br /> <br /> Speaking at a media briefing monitored by one of our correspondents on Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said even though the state had been able to draw a balance between the public health crisis and ensuring livelihoods were not in jeopardy, the government would not hesitate to impose another lockdown if the things (cases) got out of hands.<br /> <br /> “We believe we are managing a delicate balance between the public health crisis and the economic livelihood of Lagosians. If things are getting out of hand, we will certainly consider another lockdown,” he said.<br /> <br /> The commissioner added that the state had yet to reach the peak, noting that cases would continue to rise in the next one or two months.<br /> <br /> Abayomi said, “We are in the middle of the outbreak and we have not even peaked yet, and so the cases are still rising. We still expect to see a lot more cases in the next one month or two. I would use this platform to remind Lagosians that we have not yet peaked and Lagos is still going through the active community transmission of COVID-19.<br /> <br /> “I think what may be giving you a false sense of security or confidence is that we say most people have mild to moderate disease. While that may be so, between three and five per cent of Lagosians that catch this infection have an extremely severe to critical form of COVID-19 and the risk of dying in that percentage is extremely high.<br /> <br /> “Two to five per cent may seem like a small percentage, but even one per cent of 25 million people is a lot of Lagosians. We are not prepared to lose 250,000 Lagosians and we certainly will not even like to contemplate that number.<br /> <br /> “So I appeal to Lagosians, particularly people who we believe are in the vulnerable category; anybody over the age of 50 or 55 with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity or any other medical condition that interferes with their immune system, they are extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.<br /> <br /> “And the young people may be going out there with mild to moderate disease but they certainly go home in the evening and expose their parents and grandparents to the vulnerabilities.<br /> <br /> “So I appeal to Lagosians, keep practising the social distancing measures and I hope these practices will help to flatten the curve and protect certain vulnerable members of the community.”<br /> <br /> Abayomi stated that local government areas with the highest number of cases were Eti-Osa, Alimosho, Kosofe, Ikeja, Oshodi, Surulere and Lagos Mainland.<br /> <br /> With new cases being recorded daily, Osun State Government on Friday said it might impose another lockdown.<br /> <br /> The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, in a statement, said residents had continued to flout the government guidelines.<br /> <br /> “On Thursday, we announced the discovery of 17 new cases in our dear state. Sadly, today (Friday) again, we have 22 new cases. Considering where we are coming from, this is worrisome. We must, therefore, take responsibility. The battle against coronavirus is not over yet.<br /> <br /> “Government may be forced to impose another lockdown on the State if residents and citizens continue to flout the lockdown relaxation guidelines.”

On that day, proceedings were also stalled due to Evans having no legal representation.<br /> <br /> Registering his displeasure over the absence of Amadi and Uchechukwu’s defence counsel, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, queried why they did not make an appearance in court  in spite of being notified of the proceedings.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br />  “The court notes with disgust the attitude of the counsel to the second and the third defendants. Their absence today has stalled any progress in this case.<br /> <br /> “The second and third defendants should note that if they are not present during the next adjourned date, the Office of Public Defender (OPD) will have to take up their case.<br /> <br /> “The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) should notify the OPD of the next adjourned date. This case is adjourned to July 3, 2020 for adoption of no-case submission,” Justice Oshodi said.<br /> <br /> Earlier during proceedings, the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) had also requested that the court should make an Order that the OPD should represent Amadi and Uchechukwu on the next court date if their counsel were still absent.<br /> <br />  Evans is standing trial alongside Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu and Victor Aduba over alleged kidnap of Mr Donatius Dunu, the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceutical Ltd.<br /> <br /> The six defendants were arraigned on Aug. 30, 2017 on two counts of conspiracy and kidnapping.<br /> <br /> The prosecution alleged that the defendants kidnapped Dunu along Ilupeju Road, Lagos on Feb. 14, 2017 and collected 223,000 Euros (N100m) as ransom from his family.<br /> <br /> The pharmaceutical boss, allegedly still held captive by the defendants because his family had not paid additional money to the ransom already collected, escaped captivity and alerted the police.<br /> <br /> Four witnesses including Dunu,  testified during the trial on behalf of the prosecution and on Jan. 10, the prosecution closed its case against the defendants.

Consequently, the government is establishing mobile courts in different parts of the state to try those who contravene the new law on COVID-19 like individuals who do not wear face coverings or do not wear them properly. This was because, despite the demands of the office I occupy, I have been careful since COVID-19 crept into our world — I took the test just like others and didn’t nurse any fear. I was asymptomatic, I still am, and I remain fearless.<br /> <br /> “I have immediately followed and adhered strictly to the directives of the Incident Management for the Oyo State Response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.<br /> <br /> “COVID-19 is not in any way a death sentence — So, while I acknowledge my principal, Governor Seyi Makinde, for the efforts he has put in place to tackle the pandemic, I want to further urge us all to continue to do everything to minimize the spread of this virus.<br /> <br /> “I will remain in isolation till I fully recover, I will fight this, victoriously — please continue to comply with all the directives of the COVID-19 Task Force. He took the position because he felt it would benefit his people. ‘I have done my bit. There is nothing I set out to achieve that I did not, I cannot be governor again, but I cannot leave you people’ he would say.”<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Narrating how Ajimobi fell ill, Tunji said he was called to Abuja to discuss party issues amid the APC crisis.<br /> <br /> Tunji said Ajimobi had before his departure signed all the letters of appointment for the peace and reconciliation committee of the APC.<br /> <br /> He said the late ex-governor took a private flight to Abuja and never returned the same.<br /> <br /> The spokesman wrote, “He had received a call to come to Abuja. It was to discuss party matters. He was not sure of who would follow him. Because it was a private flight, he had limited options. He only went with his security aide.<br /> <br /> “He had told us earlier in our office in his Oluyole home that we would talk about the movement to Abuja since he had become the Deputy National Chairman. Our office had to relocate to Abuja.<br /> <br /> “He was in his usual caftan and cap, always impeccably dressed even at home except when he does his exercise every morning in his blue track down and stripe blue tee-shirt and branded cap.<br /> <br /> “He radiated good health and we still marveled that he still looked so good at 70. As he left our wing of the house to the other side, a few of us in our usual manner trailed him. He spoke with a few people in the courtyard before he left to prepare for that trip. I never knew it was going to be the last time I would see him.”<br /> <br /> The aide said it remained a mystery how the deceased contracted COVID-19.<br /> <br /> Tunji said he always adhered to all protocols like wearing masks and washing of hands.<br /> <br /> He wrote, “I still can’t wrap my head around what happened. He was so healthy, he was neat, he took all the necessary precautions even while he sat with us in our open office, he was always with his face mask, we always observed social distancing.<br /> <br /> “We were always quick to give him hands sanitizer any time he touched something.  We were conscious of his age and did all we could to ensure safety. We had three spots where you had to wash hands before entering the premises. How did it happen? None of us was sick. So where did this come from? I am still trying to find answers.”<br /> <br /> Ajimobi died of COVID-19 complications on June 25, 2020, barely hours after the APC National Working Committee of – which he was a member – was dissolved.

This means that “the pandemic has led to a reduction in growth by more than five percentage points,” the World Bank report said.<br /> <br /> The Bretton Woods institution noted: “The macroeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will likely be significant, even if Nigeria manages to contain the spread of the virus.”

Established rules should not be twisted or broken at the whims and caprices of anyone who feels like it, for whatever reason. No serious system will thrive in such practices.”<br /> <br /> He said he would support whoever emerges the candidate.<br /> <br /> “A well-conducted process will produce a candidate. Whoever that candidate is will have my full support as has been my antecedent in the party; but as I have always promoted, let the right process be followed.<br /> <br /> “We must do what is necessary to protect the stable Edo PDP we have worked tirelessly for, this last couple of years,” he said.<br /> <br /> Ogbeide-Ihama urged his supporters to disregard falsehoods being spread that his action was sponsored by forces to frustrate Obaseki or that it was for pecuniary gain.<br /> <br /> “Such things have never deserved my attention or response. As I have always said, such crude and unrefined politics remain beneath me,” he said.<br /> <br /> Ogbeide-Ihama had prayed the court to stop PDP from allowing any member other those earlier screened to partake in the primary.<br /> <br /> Justice Emmanuel Obile of the Federal High Court struck out the suit after parties confirmed they had settled out of court.<br /> <br /> The court had earlier stood down the matter for three hours as lawyers on both sides discussed.<br /> <br /> When the court reconvened, parties informed the court that they had settled.<br /> <br /> Striking out the case, Justice Obile said: “I commend the counsel and parties for settling out of court as it is the proper thing to do.”<br /> <br /> No fewer than 2,229 delegates are expected to vote in the primary.<br /> <br /> PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said all sensitive materials had been dispatched to Edo.<br /> <br /> Ologbondiyan added that the exercise would be conducted in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

But we decided to change the model the school had operated. The school had for long operated like public institutions; whereas public institutions have grant, we don’t have.
