‘You are insensitive’ – Apostle Suleman blasts Femi Adesina over comment on CAN

Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, on Saturday described Femi Adesina, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Media Aide as “insensitive.”<br />
<br />
Suleman made the remark while condemning Adesina for attacking the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, following its reaction to the murder of Reverend Lawan Andimi by Boko Haram.<br />
<br />
Andimi, the Chairman of CAN in Michika Local government area of Adamawa state was beheaded by the insurgents.<br />
<br />
Reacting to Andimi’s execution, CAN had accused the Buhari-led federal government of colluding with Boko Haram to kill Christians.<br />
<br />

The body had also faulted Buhari’s reaction to the killing of Andimi.<br />
<br />
But, Adesina had lambasted CAN over their comment which was anti-Buhari.<br />
<br />
However, Apostle Suleman in a tweet wrote: “Just saw the empty defense of Femi Adesina and his lashing CAN over the beheading of Rev indimi..such insensitive man is a presidential media aide? Certain positions should be given to people who have heads..even if they lack brains, we can manage ‘just head’.

The Kwara state government and the Saraki family have considered settling the dispute over the demolition of ‘Ile-Arugbo’ out of court.<br />
<br />
‘Ile Arugbo’, known to be the political home of Olusola Saraki, father of Bukola Saraki, former senate president, was demolished by the state government after the land was revoked.<br />
<br />
AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, Kwara governor, had said the land, originally designated for the construction of a secretariat and a parking lot of the civil service clinic, was illegally allocated to Asa Investments Limited, a private firm, owned by the late father of the ex-senate president.<br />
<br />
The committee on the review of sale of Kwara state government properties also said there was no application or payment records on the property.<br />

But Saraki approached the court to challenge the action of the state government. He said the land was duly allocated and that a right of occupancy title was issued on it.<br />
<br />
After the matter was taken to court, A. A. Adebara, the judge, appealed to both parties to explore the possibility of settling out of court.<br />
<br />
Ayodeji Ibrahim, counsel to the firm, in a letter dated January 20 and addressed to Salman Jawondo, commissioner for justice and attorney-general of the state, said the applicants were willing to settle the matter out of court in line with the judge’s advice.<br />
<br />
In a letter dated January 23, A. M. Bello, director, civil litigation at the state ministry of justice, invited the family to a meeting.<br />
<br />
The meeting has been scheduled for Monday at the governor’s office in Ilorin, the state capital.<br />
<br />
“Your letter of 20th January, 2020 on the above subject-matter refers. I am directed by the Honourable Attorney-General to invite you to a meeting in respect thereof scheduled to hold as follow: 27th January, 2o20,” the letter read.<br />

The Operatives of Nigeria Immigration Service, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Command in Lagos, has apprehended another nine girls being trafficked.<br />
<br />
The girls were on their way to Lebanon, Cairo, Dubai, and India on Ethiopian, Peace, Egypt and East Airlines.<br />
<br />
The service Public Relations Officer, DCI Sunday James, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.<br />
<br />
According to him, four of the girls claim to be traveling for employment without knowing their employers nor aware of the nature of the job they were going for.<br />

“This discovery was made after intensive interrogation by NIS officials,” he said.<br />
<br />
James said the shady journey was organised by agents who took advantage of the girls’ innocence and ignorance.<br />
<br />
He disclosed that two of the girls had earlier claimed to be going for a visit.<br />
<br />
“However, the two, later confessed they were going for hustle in Dubai. Another three, of the girls, claimed they were going to India for medical treatment without referrals.<br />
<br />
“When further asked the nature of sickness, they said yellow fever before they finally confessed to going for hustle in India,” he said.<br />
<br />
He said NIS refused their departure to save them from indignity to be faced from such journeys.<br />
<br />
“The Comptroller-General of NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede, therefore, called on parents to be wary of juicy offers on their children, from family and non-family members to take the children abroad.<br />
<br />
“Most of these trips are deceitful, camouflaged with employment, studies or visit which may end up in exploitation or death. Operatives at the various entry and exit points will never permit them departure.<br />
<br />
“The NIS stepped-up clearance operation that is yielding positive result in the various arrest made at the borders of the country by NIS.”

The major stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 20 wards of Port Harcourt City council area (PHALGA) of Rivers State have accused Governor Nyesom Wike of desperately lobbying to join the APC, since the former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is not allowing him (Wike) to take over the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).<br />
<br />
They also disowned ‘the foot-soldier’ of Wike in APC, Igo Aguma, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, who hails from Ward 2 of PHALGA, accusing him of being a mole and a traitor, who had been pursuing personal interest.<br />
<br />
The PHALGA stakeholders of APC, yesterday during a news conference, after their crucial meeting at Orogbum Civic Centre in Ward 2, Ogbunabali Road, Port Harcourt, insisted that the Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers governor, remained the leader of the main opposition party in the state, with the members completely loyal to him and the APC.<br />
The six-page communique was read by the leader of APC in PHALGA, Nnamdi Wuche, a lawyer, who was accompanied by a former member of the Rivers House of Assembly, Victoria Nyeche, and other critical stakeholders of the party.<br />

The communique read in part: “The leadership of APC in PHALGA hereby dissociates the chapter from the reckless, ill-conceived and malicious conduct of one Igo Aguma against the leader of APC in Rivers State (Amaechi) and the APC. We wish to state that Aguma’s reckless behaviour in recent times came to us as a rude shock. Consequently, we hereby disown Aguma, Lasbry Amadi and their cohorts.<br />
<br />
“We know as a fact that the Minister for Transportation has favoured Aguma in the areas of political appointments, contracts and financial support. It beats our imagination that the same Aguma will unleash such attacks on his benefactor (Amaechi) on the pages of newspapers.<br />
<br />
“Aguma’s sojourn and success in politics were made possible by the Minister for Transportation through his appointment as the Commissioner for Sports in Dr. Peter Odili’s government. Aguma’s commissionership slot, otherwise known as ‘compensation slot,’ was given to his father, the late Sir Emmanuel Wonukwuru Aguma. Aguma’s presence in the 5th and 6th National Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives was also made possible by Amaechi, whom he now desperately seeks to destroy.<br />
<br />
“Aguma has nothing to offer other than his desperation to destroy the APC in Rivers State, to pave way for his sponsor, Governor Nyesom Wike, who is desperately lobbying to join and take over the APC in Rivers State, which machinations we are now determined to nip in the bud.<br />
“Aguma’s penchant for betrayal, insubordination and disloyalty to party leadership is legendary and dates back to the 2011 general elections, which ultimately led to his replacement by Hon. Ken Chikere. Rt. Hon. Amaechi remains the leader of APC in Rivers State, as severally acknowledged by Aguma and his cohorts.”<br />
<br />
The former member of the House of Representatives (Aguma), while reacting yesterday evening through his media aide, Minikwu Samuel, described Wuche and other stakeholders of APC in PHALGA as impostors.<br />
<br />
Aguma, who described himself as the leader of Rivers APC Third Force, alleged that Wuche and others who were at yesterday’s news conference were Amaechi’s praise singers.<br />
<br />
He said: “APC in Rivers State, from the units to the state level, is structurally dead and non-existent in any way, executive and leadership-wise. APC in Rivers State has no functional executive at all levels known to law or the constitution of the party. The tenure of the former leadership of the party at all levels in Rivers state has elapsed. Congresses that should have produced a new set of executives, in line with the party’s constitution, have not been conducted and matters related thereto are proceeds of judgment of the Supreme Court and current litigation, which I (Aguma) am prosecuting.<br />
<br />
“I wish to renew my call to the APC leadership to follow the constitution of the party and save Rivers APC from destruction by Rotimi Amaechi. This I state as a law-abiding member of our great party.”<br />
<br />
Aguma also maintained that he remained a bonafide member and a statutory executive committee member of the APC from Ward 2, Unit 25 in PHALGA.

Women approaching menopause who have frequent s3x are less likely to cross that threshold than women of the same age who are not as active s3xually, researchers have found out.<br />

On average, intimate relations at least once a week reduced the chances of entering menopause by 28 percent compared to women who had s3x less than once a month, they reported in the journal Royal Society Open Science.<br />

The difference, the study suggests, reflects the body’s response to evolutionary pressures.<br />

“If a woman is having little or infrequent sex when approaching midlife, then the body will not be receiving the physical cues of a possible pregnancy,” Megan Arnot and Ruth Mace, scientists at University College London, wrote.<br />

Rather than continuing to ovulate, according to this theory, “it would be better — from a fitness-maximising perspective — for the woman to cease fertility and invest energy into any existing kin she has.”<br />

Earlier research seeking to explain why married women reach menopause later than never-married or divorced women points to the influence of male pheromones, natural chemicals in the animal kingdom that attract the opposite s3x.<br />
<br />
To find out whether either theory held water, Arnot and Mace examined data on nearly 3,000 women in the United States recruited in 1996 and 1997 to take part in a multi-decade health study.<br />
<br />
Known as SWAN, the project was designed to collect data and track changes — both biological and psychological — that occur alongside menopause.<br />
<br />
The average age of the women going into the study was 46. None had entered menopause, but just under half were “peri-menopausal”, with minor symptoms beginning to appear.<br />
<br />
During the following decade, 45 percent of the women experienced a natural menopause, at an average age of 52.<br />
<br />
Going into the study, nearly 78 percent of the women were married or in a relationship with a man, and 68 percent lived with their partner.<br />
<br />
The correlation between frequency of s3x and onset of menopause was unmistakable, the researchers found.<br />
<br />
All the relationships reported were heterosexual, so it is not known whether same-s3x activity would have a similar effect.

Edward Kallon, the United Nations (UN) resident and humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, says the Nigerian government should find a political solution to the Boko Haram insurgency.<br />

Kallon said this on Friday at a press briefing to conclude the visit of Janez Lenarcic, European Union (EU) commissioner for crisis management, to Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Kallon said the UN does not engage with terrorists, but that it can support the government in finding a solution to the insurgency.<br />
<br />
“Let me make it emphatic that the UN doesn’t engage with terrorists or organisations designated as a terrorist. But the UN will support efforts by the government to try to find a solution to the crisis in north-east Nigeria,” he said.<br />

Asked if there were ongoing efforts to get to the insurgents, he said: “Not at this point in time. I don’t even have the capacity and the systems to do this. We can support any effort by the government but in doing so to find a solution to this problem.<br />

“When we talk about political solutions, we are looking at various elements that are so critical to restore hope, build trust and also get people to start rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.<br />
<br />
“I strongly believe that where there is a political justification for conflict, there is a solution. You cannot harass the people you want to rule. It is not one of the easiest theories we addressed so far. You can gain power, but you cannot sustain power. So, there is a need to come to the table and try to find a political solution to the problem.<br />
<br />
“Reconciliation is an area we can engage and support and who are we going to talk to? The crisis in the north-east is a regional crisis and it has a regional implication.<br />
<br />
“So, the regional actors that are being affected by this crisis are also equally very important. So talking to Niger, Chad, and Cameroon which President Buhari has been doing and continue to do remains extremely critical in finding a solution to this crisis.”<br />
<br />
In its resolution of January 16, 2020, The EU parliament said there is no progress in the fight against insurgency.<br />
<br />
While meeting with the EU on Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari said if Nigeria could recover from the 30-month civil war, Boko Haram would be defeated.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">It was gathered that some states had already fine-tuned the processes of recruitment before the controversial notification by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, declaring the outfit as illegal.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The posture of the government towards Amotekun sparked regional protests in condemnation of the federal government’s stance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">It was the argument by its proponents that Amotekun would be the antidote for the intractable kidnapping and ritual killings which had become regular tales in the South-west region.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">They also argued that its complementary role would facilitate the fight against crime and help the statutory security agencies become effective in curbing crime in the region.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">With the memo from Mr Malami, coupled with fears expressed by some sections of the country, the South-west governors met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, in Abuja with a view to removing the obstacles to the initiative.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">One of the critical resolutions reached at the end of the meeting was the need to back Amotekun with an enabling law by the states involved.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">An official of the Osun State Government revealed on Friday that the conclusion from the meeting with the vice president resulted in the hosting of the attorneys general from the six states in Ibadan on Thursday to determine the nature of the legal framework for the security outfit.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The meeting which was hosted by the Oyo State Commissioner for Justice, Oyewole Oyewo, immediately constituted a three-member committee to provide a legal working document for the states.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Ismail Omipidan, Chief Press Secretary to the Osun State Governor, said another meeting has been scheduled for the next two weeks in Ibadan where further resolutions would be made on the matter.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">PremiumTimes reports that the attorney’s general would in the next meeting seek the inputs of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission before finally preparing the necessary documents for onward transfer to the Houses of Assembly of each of the states.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">It has however been confirmed that activities on Amotekun, particularly recruitment, would have to wait until the legal framework was put in place.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The Commissioner for Information, Ekiti State, Muyiwa Olumilua, confirmed that all procedures on the implementation of the security initiative would wait until the legal backing was in place.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“You are aware that the governors just had a meeting with the Vice President and the Attorney General of the Federation regarding the security outfit,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">“The fall out of that meeting is for us to try to put the necessary legal framework in place. That one will come before the recruitment process.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Olumilua could however not state how long it would take to conclude the legal framework. He urged citizens to be patient as the state government’s attempt to produce a well-designed framework.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, the Speakers of the Houses of Assembly of the states, who also met with the attorneys-general of the states, have promised to give speedy consideration to the bill when presented for enactment.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The governors of the states officially launched Amotekun on January 9 and many Amotekun branded vehicles donated by the sates have been assembled for deployments.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">According to the Punch, Sanusi said unless northerners desist from marrying more wives and bearing more children than they can take care of, they will continue to live in poverty.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">He said the culture of polygamy is what makes the north a major area of poverty in the country, unlike in the south where the poverty level has reduced.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“The poverty level of the north is 80 percent, while in the south, the percentage is 20 percent, simply because of the culture of marrying many wives and producing many children who, at the end, are left on the streets to beg for what to eat.”</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Sanusi said some women get divorced by their husbands, which often makes matters worse, as they find it difficult to raise the children alone.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">He said such cases have led to the bearing of more criminals in society and victims of drug abuse.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The emir asked northern universities to look into ways by which such a challenge can be tackled.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Defying the order over what was described as grey areas, ASUU had threatened nationwide strike should the government refuse its members their remunerations over the controversy.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">ASUU had, thereafter, met with Buhari, as well as Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, while proposing an alternative payroll software to address the union’s concerns.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">On Wednesday, the federal government ordered the stoppage of salaries of lecturers and workers of tertiary institutions not enrolled on the platform.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Reacting to the development, Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president, said that the union may revert to its previous strike action if “some individuals are trying to sabotage” ongoing efforts at addressing the IPPIS issue.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“We saw a circular trending on social media but we’ve not been given an official copy. We thought we were having some engagement with the government and that FG would allow the engagement to run its full course,” he said.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“The meeting we earlier had with President Buhari was to the effect that we find a way of marrying our proposed software with what we have in IPPIS in order to address the fears of our union.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“That was what we thought was going to happen. But if this circular they’re talking about is true, then we’ll go back to our earlier resolution of ‘no pay, no work’. That’s where we stand.”</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">On the outcome of the union’s meeting with the president, Ogunyemi said the resolution had been that ASUU would meet with the education minister, who would then look into the union’s concerns.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">“One issue we raised was about the IPPIS and our proposed solution. If some individuals are trying to sabotage that, ASUU would respond appropriately as deemed necessary,” Ogunyemi added.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">On his part, Ndanitsa Attahiru, ASUU chairman at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, said subsequent strike action won’t require a meeting.</div>

YIAGA AFRICA, a civil society organisation (CSO), has predicted low voter turnout in 11 states where rerun polls will be held on Saturday.<br />

In a statement on Friday, Samson Itodo, YIAGA executive director, said the police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are facing another integrity test.<br />
<br />
He said his organisation has observed low voter education and mobilisation in the states, especially in Akwa Ibom, Imo and Kano.<br />
<br />
Itodo said there is increasing tension in Imo because of the supreme court verdict that sacked Emeka Ihedioha and affirmed Hope Uzodinma as governor of the state.<br />
<br />

<a name='more' id="more"></a>“Based on reports from WTV observers, voter education and mobilization was low in all states especially – in Akwa Ibom, Imo and Kano state,” the executive director said.<br />

“Yiaga Africa predicts poor voter turnout for the elections based on our interaction with voters who expressed concerns with the paucity of information on the elections. Across the 11 states with rerun elections, there are a total of 1,322,929 registered voters.<br />
<br />
“There is increasing tension in Imo state following the ruling by the Supreme Court on the governorship election. Citizens are worried that this tension could linger until the elections and has the potential to escalate to physical violence if adequate security is not provided and deployed security personnel fail to act responsibly and professionally.<br />
<br />
“In Kano, there is a possible security threat to corps members in Kiru LGA due to alleged involvement of a corps member in the death of a child. INEC has indicated it will refrain from deploying corps members as adhoc officials in Kiru LGA.<br />
<br />
“Yiaga Africa notes that the rerun election serves as another test of the integrity and commitment of INEC, Police and President Buhari to free, fair and peaceful elections. This rerun election is conducted against the background of recent marching orders given by President Buhari to the Police to ensure elections are conducted in an atmosphere devoid of violence, intimidation or malpractice. INEC also warned that it would not conduct elections or collate results where the security of election materials and personnel are not guaranteed by security agencies, especially the police.”<br />
<br />
Itodo said for the elections to be successful there has to be effective coordination and information sharing between the electoral commission and security agencies.<br />
<br />
“The commission should strengthen its oversight to ensure strict adherence to its guidelines, particularly the use of the smart card readers for accreditation and results collation,” he said.<br />

The director added that 100 of its observers would be stationed at selected polling units.<br />

About 15 shop owners were said to have collapsed due to the wildfire that razed Amu Timber, a Lagos popular plank market on Saturday morning.<br />
<br />
Residents were divided over when the fire started.<br />
<br />
Some said the fire started around 11pm while others said it was around 12am.<br />
<br />
Goods worth hundreds of billions were lost to the inferno and houses got burnt.<br />

The shop owners, some of who live in far places, could not salvage any of their goods.<br />
<br />
None of those on ground knew the cause of the fire.<br />
<br />
“It couldn’t have been from the electric distribution because we don’t use power from either Ikeja Electricity Distribution or Eko Disco.<br />
<br />
“We all use generating set in this market, ”a trader told The Nation.<br />
<br />
Some residents noted that the fire service didn’t respond on time and when their vehicle arrived, it came with half tank water.<br />
<br />
“It took another one hour before three more vehicles arrived. I think the state fire service could do better, ” Femi Akiola told newsmen.<br />
<br />
Acting Head of Lagos State Fire Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye blamed the crowd for the delay in putting out the fire.<br />
<br />
“Our men responded swiftly to the emergency call with a vehicle.<br />
<br />
“On getting to the scene, he called for more support and three additional vehicles were deployed to the scene.<br />
<br />
“But we faced similar challenge of crowd control. Our men couldn’t get to the fireplace.<br />
<br />
“We had to call on the police to help push clear the way before the firefighters could access the place, ” Mrs Adeseye said.

Tens of Lagosians stormed the LASU Road office of late Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun, to demand the money they invested in his Ponzi scheme.<br />
<br />
Oko Oloyun, a popular Lagos-based trado-medical expert, was murdered on Thursday around 4:30pm on the road while travelling to Iseyin, Oyo State. He was reportedly attacked by some hoodlums at Igboora.<br />
<br />
Following his demise, people who invested money in his Ponzi scheme, known as “Option C” stormed the Head office of his company to demand how to retrieve their money.<br />
<br />
The investors were the more confused as his two offices at Egba Idowu along Igando road in Lagos were shut with no one to provide information.<br />

The investors, however, vowed to take drastic measures if a statement was not issued by the organization as soon as possible.<br />
<br />
Just like the day MMM folded up, the investors in “Option C” programme narrated how much they had invested and insisted they could not afford to lose their hard-earned money.<br />
<br />
An investor, who identified himself as Tunde explained that Option C is a money-making programme that promised a 10% return in two months.<br />
<br />
Tunde, who was trembling while speaking, added that he invested in the scheme in July 2019 and had only received returns once, contrary to the agreement of two months which was stated.<br />
<br />
Another investor, a retired teacher, who was clearly in shock, stated that she had invested millions having joined the programme in December 2018. She said she had only received N500,000 from her investment and that she was not sure of her fate with the death of Oko Oloyun.<br />
<br />
Clutching her investment documents, she said that she filed to pull out after inconsistency in payment but rescinded her decision when she was told that she could not get her investment back in full.<br />
<br />
Mrs. Sulaimon, an investor, said she aborted her trip to travel down from Badagry to Igando when she heard about the assassination of Oko Oloyun.<br />
<br />
Another investor, who spoke with teary eyes said Oko Oloyun’s death was a big blow to the Ponzi scheme. He, however, advised his co-investors to allow the family some mourning space before demanding for their money.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, some investors who had visited the house of the late Oko Oloyun in Lagos alleged that they were denied access by the security men, with the statement that “Alhaja said we should not allow anybody to come in, they are all in Ibadan.”<br />
<br />
After the outcry, the investors agreed among themselves to visit the house of the deceased in Lagos during the Fidau prayers on the eighth day to demand their returns.<br />
<br />
However, a security man at Oko Oloyun’s Egan Idowu office alleged that one of the rooms in the head office was intentionally burnt by unknown men prior to Oko Oloyun’s death.<br />
<br />
He said the workers who were on duty had been arrested.

Nigeria has a reported case of 2.8 million abortions and 760,000 self-induced abortions annually. This was disclosed by a reproductive health expert, who is also the Executive Director Women, Law and Development Initiative, Mrs. Hauwa Shekarau.<br />
<br />
Shekarau was delivering a lecture in Owerri at a media capacity building workshop on Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (WSRHR) for journalists drawn from Abia, Imo and Anambra states.<br />
<br />
Shekarau, in her paper on Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT), a reproductive health expert, said the existing statistics had become obsolete and incapable of addressing the reproductive health challenges.<br />
<br />
She argued that the law should be made more effective to check the rising death of girls through unsafe abortion.<br />

According to her, “With over 2.8 million cases of abortion reported annually in Nigeria and the societal general conception, there is need for increased efforts at reviewing the WSRHR laws.”<br />
<br />
She said, “The religious and societal bias against abortion has encouraged our girls and women to undertake wrong choices which include unsafe abortion, resulting in high maternal mortality.<br />
<br />
“We have to respect the choice of our girls when they are faced with sexual violence.<br />
<br />
“With over 760,000 self-induced abortions annually in Nigeria and more than 140,000 women hospitalized annually for abortion complications, our society must rise and take the right actions.”<br />
<br />
Another resource person, Emma Ugorji said the training was aimed at building the capacity of journalists on women sexual reproductive health and rights for accurate and unbiased reportage.<br />
<br />
He said, “The media is key in determining public opinion on trivial issues affecting the people, hence the essence of the training for journalists.<br />
<br />
“We want to transform the attitude of the media towards the subject matter and build a network of journalists that will be strong advocates of WSRHR in the participating states.<br />
<br />
“We are looking at getting the commitment of media practitioners to sensitize the public on WSRHR with a view to changing the existing narrative,” he stated.<br />
<br />
At the same programme,  an international non-governmental organization, IPAS  called for the review of existing laws on Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (WSRHR) to meet present day realities.<br />
<br />
It noted that reviewing the laws has become necessary in order to reduce the negative indices on sexual reproductive health system in the society

The General Overseer of the Ark of Covenant Total Life Ministries, Prophet Isaac Itodo has revealed that the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has been enmeshed in playing politics and fraternizing with political opponents of the present administration in heating the polity in Nigeria at the detriment of uniting the body of Christ in Nigeria.<br />

The fiery cleric stated this in an exclusive chat with journalists in the wake of the killing of the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa state, Rev. Lawan Andimi by Boko Haram terrorist group.<br />

Prophet Isaac Itodo stated that the prophecy from God is that the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has compromised its position as a body of Christ to lead the children of God by availing itself as a willing political tool for sale to the highest bidder.<br />
“The Prophecy from God is that from the time of Ayo Oristejafor as the Chairman of CAN, the leadership of the association was compromised when they started dinning and winning with politicians and also using CAN as a political tool for settling political scores.”<br />

“As strange as this may sound, the revelation from God is that the leadership of CAN as it was engaged in too many activities that brought the body of Christ into disrepute in return for a plate of porridge.”<br />

When asked what he meant by activities that brought the body of Christ into disrepute, the clergy stated that some of the decisions taken by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were not in the interest of the country and instead of the leadership of CAN to speak out, they supported him by playing the religious card.<br />

“The CAN was a willing tool used by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to hide the killings and mismanagement of public funds meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition to prosecute the Boko Haram war in North-East Nigeria.”<br />

The cleric further added that some leaders of CAN instead of sober reflecting on the killing of the Chairman of CAN in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, they have capitalized on it to make monetary demands from highly placed politicians in the country for propaganda purposes.<br />

“God works in mysterious ways. Ways we mortals cannot comprehend. For in Romans 1:18, it stated that “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”<br />
<br />
“It is ironic that these leaders have forgotten so soon on about the wrath of God in Ezekiel 25:17 that states how God will “execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon them.”<br />
<br />
The cleric averred that God is angry with the leadership of CAN and advises them to retrace their steps or be ready for God’s visitation upon them.<br />
<br />
“It is indeed a shame that the body of Christ could denigrate to a level where truth would be far from them, where they take pride in bearing false witness against brethren. God is angry with them on how they have compromised by preferring to tell lies instead of telling the truth at all times like Jesus Christ.”<br />

Prophet Isaac Itodo further asserted that CAN allowed itself to become an accomplice in the unemployment equation by seeking to pray for Governors and top politicians that are ready to pay than holding a nationwide spiritual exercise to disgrace the devil and his plans for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“The leadership of CAN is cash and carry, where prayers are offered in return for money. They prefer to be seen in the company of governors and other political office holders who can pay their price in return for prayers. And to think that the leadership of CAN is now using the killing of Rev. Lawan Andimi to seek personal gains from top politicians in the country is very sad.”<br />

“The leadership of CAN cannot mock God because instead of bringing the Church together, they have elected to share money and utter just anything to the highest bidder because they have turned CAN to the biggest political party in Nigeria by using the name of God in vain to promote their empire for selfish interests and gains, forgetting that the scriptures state that Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.<br />
<br />
Prophet Isaac Itodo stated that several other revelations were received from God on how the leadership of CAN had compromised. If they do not desist from their old ways, the wrath of God will come down heavily on them.<br />
<br />
“God revealed that the leadership of CAN must imbibe the spirit of uprightness and deviate from their old ways. That they should seek His Face in times of tribulations rather than running to those whose actions and inactions have contributed to the level of insecurity in Nigeria.”<br />
When asked about the state of insecurity in the country as one of God’s wrath on Nigeria, the clergy stated that the issue of insecurity had been politicized and blown out of proportion by politicians.<br />

“The issue of insecurity has been politicized, and it is sad that CAN have been brought into the fray by these same set of politicians that are fueling the crisis to demand the sacking of Service Chiefs. Monies have indeed exchanged hands with the leadership of CAN for them to be calling for the sack of Service Chiefs”.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, for the umpteenth time on Friday, dismissed the insinuation that the ninth National Assembly is a rubber stamp legislature.<br />

Lawan, who returned to Nigeria Thursday morning after about three weeks’ private visit abroad, said no amount of blackmail will discourage the present Assembly from working with the executive arm of government for the betterment of the people.<br />

The Senate President was responding to a surprised belated birthday presentation by his North East Support Group at the Dutse Airport in Jigawa State on his way to his Yobe North Senatorial District in Yobe State.<br />
<br />
Lawan said: “The ninth National Assembly is a National Assembly that is focused, that is united, that is determined to make a positive difference in the lives of Nigerians.<br />

“We are so terribly misunderstood that when we say that we are going to work with the executive arm of government in a very harmonious and productive manner, some people, some out of misunderstanding, some out of mischief, say it’s a rubber stamp National Assembly.<br />

“But let me say this: no amount of distractions or blackmail will stop us from being united in the National Assembly for the benefit of Nigerians who elected us and nothing will discourage us from working with the executive arm of government for the betterment of our country.<br />
<br />
“As a legislature, we know where our limits lie in terms of cooperation and in working with the executive arm of government. But we are going to give the President and his team every possible legislative support that they require to make this country better and greater.<br />
<br />
“Where we feel that there is a breach of procedures and processes by the executive arm of government, we will insist that the right things are done.<br />
<br />
“So it doesn’t mean that because we are peaceful and that we are cordial with the executive arm of government that we are rubber stamp, but that is something that will not distract us.<br />

“We have seen what a “rubber stamp” National Assembly could do. We have already passed so many important and critical legislations within the last six months and if that is what we can be achieving with that kind of understanding, so be it.”<br />

The Senate President also expressed satisfaction about the prevailing cordiality among members of the National Assembly and sought the support and understanding of the people.<br />

“Our colleagues, in the Senate particularly and generally in the National Assembly, have given us every support that we need to perform our functions as a legislature.<br />

“We are going to continue to seek for your support and understanding and the support of all Nigerians in this enterprise.<br />

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, on Friday, condemned the ongoing practice of some electricity distribution companies forcing customers to invest in the replacement of distribution infrastructure such as transformers and cables as a condition for the restoration of electricity supply.<br />
<br />
It said the commission had earlier issued a ‘Regulation for Investment in Electricity Networks’ whereby customers desirous of intervening in the restoration of power supply may invest in the provision of materials and installation.<br />
<br />
It explained that the regulation provided that such an arrangement must always be on the basis of an executed project agreement between the customers and the Discos, in which the costs and the mechanism for recovery of the investment were mutually agreed between the parties.<br />
<br />

“In this regard, customers are hereby requested to report any electricity distribution company that has engaged in the practice of forcing customers to supply materials and/or installation as a precondition for providing or restoring electricity supply,” the commission declared in a document on Friday.<br />
<br />
It said its was also drawn to the current practice of some electricity distribution companies embarking on the removal of meters from customer premises purportedly on the regulator’s directive that all meters that had been in use for more than 10 years should be phased out.<br />
<br />
“The commission has issued no such directive to the licensees and no metered customer should be transferred to ‘estimated billing’ on the premise that meters in use for more than 10 years are dysfunctional,” the NERC stated.<br />
<br />
It added, “All licensees must henceforth adhere to the Part III, Section 3.5.2 of the Metering Code which states that ‘if a metering system fault occurs, the distributor shall provide urgent metering services to repair or replace the metering system as soon as it is practicable and in any event within two working days of the distributor discovering that the fault exists’”.

The Police in Abia State, on Thursday arrested two pensioners in Umuahia for allegedly organising a protest against state government’s alleged failure to pay their pension arrears.<br />

The arrested persons included Daniel Amugo and Chukwuemeka Augustus, the Chairman and Secretary of a group, called Abia State Concerned Pensioners.<br />
<br />
Speaking with newsmen, the Vice Chairman of the group, John Kalu, said that the police arrested the two people after their meeting with the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Aham Uko, in his office.<br />
<br />
He said that they wanted to embark on a peaceful protest in the city, adding that the commissioner, however, invited their leaders to his office for a meeting, NAN reports.<br />
<br />

He said that they were in the meeting when the commissioner allegedly received a phone call, adding that shortly after the call, some police operatives met them on their way after the meeting and took them to the Umuahia Area Command.<br />
<br />
The commissioner, however, denied holding any meeting with the pensioners in his office.<br />
<br />
Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the pensioners were arrested for impersonating the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Abia.<br />
<br />
Ogbonna said that the command received a petition accusing them of impersonation.<br />
<br />
He said that the matter was being investigated, adding that the national leadership of NUP had disowned the protesters.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says it has come up with solutions to reduce the waiting time of vessels berthing at Lagos terminals.<br />

In a statement on Friday,  Jatto Adams, NPA general manager of corporate strategic communications, said as from January 27, vessels waiting to berth within Lagos pilotage district will be diverted to other terminals.<br />
<br />
He said in the case that Lagos terminals cannot discharge any vessels within four days, such vessels will be diverted to eastern ports.<br />
<br />
According to Adams, the action was taken to promote the ease of doing business and curtail negative impact of long turn around time of vessels on stakeholders.<br />
<br />

“In response to the recent increase in the waiting time of vessels calling at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, the Nigerian Ports Authority have met with shipping companies and terminal operators and arrived at the following decisions aimed at immediately resolving the congestion in the Lagos Pilotage District, ” the statement read.<br />
<br />
“As from Monday January 27, 2020, vessels which have waited to berth at any terminal within the Lagos Pilotage District will be diverted to other terminals with capacity to berth vessels within the district.”<br />
<br />
“In the event that all terminals in Lagos cannot discharge any vessels within four days, such vessels will be diverted to the Eastern Ports (other pilotage districts) for immediate berthing.<br />
<br />
” The Authority will liaise with other relevant government agencies on behalf of stakeholders to expedite the clearance of vessels and cargoes, where necessary.<br />
<br />
“These actions have been taken to promote the Ease of Doing Business Policy of the Federal Government and curtail the negative economic impact that the long turn around time of vessels has on stakeholders. We solicit the cooperation of all stakeholders.”<br />

The Nigerian Union of Journalists has confirmed the death of Alex Ogbu, a journalist, killed while covering a protest by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja.<br />

The NUJ said the Abuja-based journalist was reportedly killed by a stray bullet when the protesters clashed with the police in the city.<br />
<br />
The incident which occurred on Tuesday when IMN members better known as Shiites protested the continued detention of Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, their leader.<br />
<br />
However, it was until Thursday that the NUJ confirmed his identity as a journalist.<br />
<br />

Emmanuel Ogbeche, NUJ chairman in the FCT, said in a statement that Ogbu worked with Regent Africa Times where he covered politics.<br />
<br />
He said it was becoming a pattern for journalists covering protests in Abuja to be targeted in the course of carrying out their duties.<br />
<br />
“It is heart-rending to know that yet another journalist was felled in this seeming unending orgy of bloodletting in Abuja and other parts of the country,” Ogbeche said.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We at the NUJ are now asking if this is a pattern where journalists become victims in the legitimate pursuit of their profession as reporters?”<br />
<br />
Ogbu’s death comes seven months after Precious Owolabi, a corps member interning with Channels TV, was killed while covering an IMN protest in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Two journalists covering the protest were also arrested in 2019.<br />
<br />
The NUJ asked the FCT police command to investigate Ogbu’s death, adding that it would be held to account “if justice is not served in this matter”.<br />

Legal battle between the Federal Government and a British Virgin Island firm, Process and Industrial Development, over the controversial of a $9.6bn judgment against Nigeria resumes at a London court on Friday (today).<br />

A London commercial court had in a judgment delivered on August 16, 2019, validated the award of the sum by a London arbitration panel against Nigeria and in favour of the P&ID.<br />
<br />
The Federal Government had since then institute a series of legal actions to have the judgment overturned.<br />
<br />
P&ID in an e-mail sent to our correspondent on Thursday stated that “the English Commercial Court has confirmed that a hearing will take place at 10am on March 24 at the Rolls Building in London.<br />

“Legal representatives from P&ID and the Nigerian Government will be present.”<br />
<br />
The $9.bn award was first issued against Nigeria and in favour of the P&ID  in a January 31, 2017 ruling of a London arbitration tribunal, which held that the Federal Government was liable for the breach of a 20-year gas supply agreement signed in 2010  between the P&ID and Nigeria, through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.<br />
<br />
Under the agreement, the firm was to build in the Niger Delta region, a gas processing plant for the refining of natural gas, also known as “wet gas” into “lean gas” which would be used by Nigeria to generate electricity.<br />
<br />
The two parties subsequently approached an arbitration tribunal in London which in January 2017 issued a final award of $6.56bn damages with accumulated interest worth over US$9.5bn in favour of the P&ID.<br />
<br />
The Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had said in a statement on December 6, 2019 that it had filed new processes at the English courts in its bid to upturn the award of $9.6bn.<br />
<br />
The AGF, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said this through a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Gwandu.<br />
<br />
Giving an insight into the case made out in the fresh filing, Gwandu stated that Nigeria argued that the gas supply and processing agreement “was procured on the basis of fraud and corruption, while the subsequent arbitral process was riddled with irregularities and deliberately concealed from the government.”<br />
<br />
The minister’s spokesperson also explained that “the Federal Government has recently expanded its legal team, to include leading London law firm Mishcon de Reya.”<br />
<br />
The P&ID  had, in its statement reacting to the new filings by the Federal Government last December, described the step by Nigeria as “an act of desperation to try to undo the Court’s sound conclusion that P&ID’s $10bn award is enforceable.”

The Ondo State Governor and Chairman of the Southwest Governors, Rotimi Akeredolu, has disclosed what was agreed upon during the meeting with the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo with regards to Amotekun.<br />

Akeredolu said governors of the region and Osinbajo agreed on a legal framework to be established to backup the region’s security outfit.<br />
<br />
Recall that the Southwest governors had met with Osinbajo yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />
<br />
The meeting is coming 24 hours after the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, said Amotekun was not a threat to national unity.<br />

Amotekun, an initiative of Southwest Governors, was first declared illegal last Tuesday by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami<br />

However, Akeredolu while addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, said: “We held a very fruitful discussion, the governors of the South-West were there. The meeting was presided over by the Vice President, the AGF was there and the Inspector General of Police.<br />
<br />
“We have rubbed minds and all of us have agreed on the way forward. The most important thing is that we are going to have the legal framework to back this Amotekun. And this legal framework is going to be one in which all of us will look at and we will be sure that it goes without any hindrance.”<br />
<br />
When asked if the agreement reached with the Vice President meant that the establishment of the outfit would be put on hold until the legal framework was developed, he said: “No. What I believe about our resolution is that Amotekan is there, you know the Federal Government is starting community policing. In essence really, it is about community. So, we are going to work together to see the community policing and Amotekan work in a way.”<br />

Akeredolu also insisted that there were consultations before the establishment of Amotekun<br />

“There were consultations, don’t say there were no consultations. There were consultations because we held discussions with the IG then and what has developed is what has led to this, not that there were no consultations.<br />
<br />
“We just felt that with all these noise outside, it was better for us to sit down. Remember that immediately the noise started, I said that we were going to explore political solutions and all of us are here, my colleague, the deputy governor of Oyo State who is of the PDP, all of us are here. So, we have looked at both political and legal solutions to it and all of us will do it,” he said.

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, says the federal government spent N1.7 trillion on electricity in the last three years.<br />

The governor said this in Abuja on Thursday after the national economic council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.<br />
<br />
El-Rufai was appointed head of the ad-hoc committee that will review the ownership of the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) at the NEC meeting in November.<br />
<br />
El-Rufai added that the country cannot make any progress until its electricity sector is fixed.<br />

“The problems in electricity are many, capacity is one perhaps. There are some that have shown lack of capacity it is true but there are many that are fantastic, so it is very difficult to pass quick judgement,” el-Rufai said.<br />

“There are other issues. The entire sector is broken, the tariff is an issue, the way the privatisation was done is an issue to many. So there are many many issues.<br />
<br />
“What we have agreed on is that there are fundamental problems in the electronic supply industry, and that you cannot privatise an industry and then over three years since privatisation, you pump in N1.7 trillion of government into it. That is not privatisation.<br />
<br />
“The federal government has supported the electricity sector with N1.7 trillion in the last three years and this is not sustainable. So, solutions must be found. Those solutions are not going to be nice. They may be painful, but the only way to solve the structural problems in the industry is to take some very difficult decisions.<br />
<br />
“So, my appeal is that let’s not be quick to pass judgement. Right now we are listening to all the stakeholders, of course there is a lot of blame game.<br />
<br />
“At the end of the day, we must have an honest conversation as Nigerians and know that unless we fix electricity, we cannot make progress. And this electricity is required not only in the cities but in every home, every rural area.”<br />
