At least 10 residents were killed when suspected armed herdsmen invaded Saghev Ward in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The state government confirmed the attack and the casualty figure on Saturday in a statement by Mr Terver Akase, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Samuel Ortom. 
 
According to them, many innocent persons are feared killed during the attack which started on Friday night and lasted until the early hours of the next day. 
 
The communities affected by the invasion are Tse-Abi, Tse-Ginde, Tse-Peviv, Tse-Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke. 
 
“Ten corpses have so far been recovered with many others injured. The armed herdsmen also burnt numerous houses, shops and other property in the area. 
 
“This mindless attack was unprovoked, and we urge security agencies to arrest the herdsmen behind the killings for prosecution,” the statement obtained by Channels tv read. 
 
However, the police authorities in Benue have yet to issue any statement concerning the attack.

Mr. Kim and South Korean President, Moon Jae-in are due to meet next week for the first inter-Korean summit in over a decade. 
 
Mr. Moon’s office said the North’s decision would “contribute to creating a very positive environment for the success of the upcoming South-North summit and North-United States summit.” 
 
The EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said it was a “long sought-after step” that should lead to “verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.”

Suspected Fulani herdsmen between Friday and early hours of  Saturday invaded six communities in Saghev council ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State where ten persons have been reportedly killed.

The communities attacked, according to locals who spoke to our correspondent through the telephone include; Tse Abi, Tse Ginde, Tse Peviv, Tse Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke. 
 
The locals who did not want to be mentioned said that the attack on the area started late on Friday and extended till the early hours of Saturday. 
 
The suspected herdsmen were said to have stormed the villages in military uniforms shooting indiscriminately and setting houses ablaze. 
 
One of the locals said, “This is the second time since yesterday (Friday)  these herdsmen would be attacking these villages, as I am talking to you ten dead bodies have been recovered.’ 
 
“As am talking to you, (around 2.04pm), gunshots still rent the air, while several houses have been burnt down.” 
 
The attack is coming barely two days after the state acting governor, Benson Abounu, raised the alarm of planned attacks on five communities in the state. 
 
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Terver Akase, who confirmed the attacks on the affected communities said, “I can confirm that Fulani herdsmen last night (Friday) and earlier today (Saturday) invaded Saghev Ward of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State and killed many innocent persons. 
 
“The attacked communities are Tse-Abi, Tse-Ginde, Tse-Peviv, Tse-Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke. 
 
“Ten corpses have so far been recovered with many others injured. The armed herdsmen also burnt numerous houses, shops and other property in the area. 
 
“This mindless attack was unprovoked, and we urge security agencies to arrest the herdsmen behind the killings for prosecution”, said Akase. 
 
But the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP, Moses Yamu, said he was yet to receive such report and asked to be given time to find out the situation of things from the council Divisional Police Officer.</div>

Muhammadu Buhari’s pledge to end Boko Haram’s Islamist insurgency in northeast Nigeria played a large part in his 2015 presidential election victory.

With elections approaching next year and Buhari,75, having declared his intention to seek a second, four-year term, the extent to which he has done that is coming under increasing scrutiny. 
 
But as Africa’s most populous nation gears up for months of hard campaigning before the vote in February 2019, the former military ruler is not just facing questions about Boko Haram. 
 
In recent months there has been a resurgence of clashes between farmers and nomadic herders — and a heavily politicised reaction — which could have an impact on polling. 
 
Ryan Cummings, Africa analyst at the Signal Risk consultancy in South Africa, noted the violence “now accounts for more civilian casualties than the Boko Haram insurgency and may continue to do so in the foreseeable future”. 
 
Elsewhere, criminal violence and kidnappings for ransom in some northern states have increased, while tensions persist from pro-Biafran separatists in the southeast. 
 
– Boko Haram weakened – 
 
In the 12 months before the last election, Boko Haram fighters ran riot across northeast Nigeria, capturing swathes of territory with the military seemingly unable to respond. 
 
Buhari, who headed a military government in the 1980s, was seen as a better bet to end the violence, which has killed at least 20,000 since 2009. 
 
He has achieved that to an extent but persistent attacks have undermined his repeated assertion that the militants have been virtually defeated. 
 
“It is fair to say that President Buhari has failed in delivering on his promise to defeat Boko Haram within his first term,” said Cummings. 
 
The group recently gave a clear indication of the threat it still poses by abducting 112 schoolgirls from Dapchi in Yobe state in almost a carbon copy of the Chibok kidnapping in 2014. 
 
Buhari secured massive support across the mainly Muslim north in 2015. That looks unlikely to change significantly in 2019. 
 
In the north’s biggest city and most populous state, Kano — a key election prize because of its size — people said Buhari had their vote for weakening Boko Haram. 
 
But they warned he needed to take action against security threats elsewhere. 
 
“That is where he is going to face his toughest challenge,” said Abdulhadi Ahmad, a garment trader.</div>

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said its troops successfully repelled attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Gamboru-Ngala in Borno. Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement said that one insurgent was killed while several others fled.

Chukwu said: “”troops of 3 Battalion on operation LAFIYA DOLE had successfully repelled Boko Haram terrorists’ attack at Gamboru Ngala, Borno State. ““One Boko Haram terrorist was neutralised during the encounter while other members of the group fled following a superior fire power from the troops. 
 
“”Unfortunately, one soldier lost his life during the attack”. Chukwu disclosed that the troops recovered one Rocket Propelled gun, seven tube, one Anti Aircraft gun, two AK 47 rifles and two empty magazines. The army spokesman called on the people to cooperate with troops, provide useful and timely information to security agencies.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has insisted Arsene Wenger must have been sacked as he cannot believe his old boss would have walked away from his post.

Wenger had faced repeated calls to quit from frustrated Gunners’ fans in recent seasons but the 68-year-old Frenchman had remained steadfast in wanting to carry on. Wright, who helped Arsenal win the Premier League title in the early years of Wenger’s reign, was adamant he must have been forced by the club’s hierarchy. 
 
“Arsene Wenger is a man of principle, honesty and integrity — that is why I am convinced he has been sacked and not resigned,” Wright told Saturday’s edition of The Sun tabloid. “For all the vitriol and abuse thrown at him, Arsene has never been a man to walk out before the end of a contract,” he added.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said its troops successfully repelled attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Gamboru-Ngala in Borno.

Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement said that one insurgent was killed while several others fled. 
 
Chukwu said: “Troops of 3 Battalion on operation LAFIYA DOLE had successfully repelled Boko Haram terrorists’ attack at Gamboru Ngala, Borno State. 
 
“One Boko Haram terrorist was neutralised during the encounter while other members of the group fled following a superior firepower from the troops. 
 
“Unfortunately, one soldier lost his life during the attack.” 
 
Chukwu disclosed that the troops recovered one Rocket Propelled gun, seven tube, one Anti Aircraft gun, two AK 47 rifles and two empty magazines. 
 
The army spokesman called on the people to cooperate with troops, provide useful and timely information to security agencies.</div>

The Senate has directed security agencies to prevent the suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege from further gaining entrance into its chamber.

Omo-Agege, who was last week suspended by the Senate for dragging the upper legislative chamber to court on the amendment to the Electoral Act 2010, had attended plenary on Wednesday. He was, however, absent on Thursday. 
 
The lawmaker’s emergence at the chamber had occurred same time when suspected thugs invaded the Senate chamber while plenary was ongoing and made away with the mace. 
 
Speaking to one of our correspondents on Friday, the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, disclosed that the sergeants-at-arms and security personnel had been ordered to block the lawmaker whenever he tries to enter the chamber. 
 
When reminded that Omo-Agege was at the chamber for Wednesday’s plenary, Murray-Bruce said the lawmaker was prevented from entering the chamber on Wednesday but that the embattled legislator allegedly forced his way in. 
 
He said, “What kind of question is that? He brought thugs and the thugs broke the door down, broke the leg of one of our staff (members) and forced himself in. We didn’t let him in. He broke in and the thugs led him into the chamber. How can you ask why we let him in? We were not supposed to fight with him. We are no children.” 
 
“He was not there the next day because we told the police that he was not allowed in. We have informed them officially that he is suspended. But that day, we didn’t let him in. He was stopped from going in, but the thugs beat up our staff (sergeants-at-arms) and broke the door down; that was how he got in.” 
 
Murray-Bruce was also informed that Omo-Agege had dismissed his suspension as illegal and that he would continue to participate in legislative activities. 
 
The Senate’s spokesman said, “The law enforcement officials have been informed about that already.” 
 
Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has said the attack on the Senate on Wednesday called for a “rethink” of Nigeria’s security structure. 
 
He pointed out that the invasion and theft showed that the country’s security had broken down, describing the attack as an embarrassment to Nigeria before the international community. 
 
Ekweremadu said this when he received the leadership of the Nigerian Political Science Association which paid a solidarity visit to the Senate, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu. 
 
He said, “It is an embarrassment to Nigeria before the international community, for someone to drive all the way into the National Assembly Complex, enter the hallowed chamber, and cart away its symbol of authority. 
 
“It shows a breakdown of security and it is a setback to Nigeria’s drive for foreign investment, because no one would be ready to invest money in such a system. So, it is a lesson that we cannot keep doing the same thing with our security system and expect a different result. 
 
“It is also an irony that the people involved would organise armed bandits to rob the Senate of its mace since they understand the implication of what they have done. As a parliament, we will ensure that this does not happen again and insist that all the actors behind the drama are brought to book.” 
 
The Deputy Senate President enjoined the association to help the nation to rethink its governance and security structures in line with other federal systems. 
 
President of the NPSA, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, who led the delegation, said the association was at the National Assembly to solidarise with the Senate and condemn the incident. 
 
He said, “Our association is non-partisan. But we must speak the truth, stand by the truth and protect the truth. Any group or person that perpetrated what we saw live on national television needs to have his head examined. 
 
“A normal person cannot come here and desecrate the National Assembly, let alone infringe on the mace. It was not really an assault on the National Assembly, but the entire people you have been mandated to represent. 
 
“The desecration of this hallowed chamber is so grave an event that it calls for an immediate national action to avert a repeat and to bring the culprits, who we regard as bandits, to book.” 
 
Okolie stated that the association joined other progressive forces in the country to demand justice. 
 
“We demand the immediate prosecution of the actors involved. This matter goes beyond the cliché of being on top of the situation. 
 
“We want to see people we put in this place as our representatives conduct their affairs in a manner devoid of any intimidation or any fear so that the best will come out of this hallowed chamber,” he said. 
 
Omo-Agege had told newsmen on Wednesday that he would continue to work as a senator. 
 
He had said, “What happened is this: the jurisprudence in this area is very settled. The Court of Appeal in the Bauchi State House of Assembly’s case, the Dino Melaye’s case in the House of Representatives and the Ali Ndume’s case in the Senate; the courts made it clear and settled the issue, that a legislative house cannot suspend a member even for a day. 
 
“That is the law and it has not been set aside. And this kind of judgment is for everybody. Even though I was not a party in those cases, the pronouncements are for the benefit of everybody. It is only the reliefs that are personal to those who went to court. Therefore, you don’t have to go to court to re-litigate these issues. 
 
“If the issue was settled, it means that whatever suspension they issued is illegal, null and void. That is why I said I would go to work. I went in and took my seat.” 
 
The lawmaker had also denied having a link with the gunmen who carted away the mace in the Senate chamber. 
 
“All the talk about mace, what is my business with it? I don’t know where that came from,” Omo-Agege stated. 
 
Again on Thursday, the senator insisted on his earlier positions when he spoke to our correspondent. 
 
“It (his absence on Thursday) was deliberate but I have resumed. Like you rightly reported, I was never arrested; I was only taken away for security reason, from being mobbed. As far as I am concerned, I am not suspended. The purported suspension is illegal, null and void.” 
 
Denying the allegation that he led the attackers into the chamber, Omo-Agege had said, “That is arrant nonsense. I never did anything like that. I don’t even know who they are. Beyond that, I won’t say anything. I came on my own and I left on my own.”

The alleged victim of sexual harassment by a lecturer in the Department of Accounting at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife, Ms. Monica Osagie, has been summoned to appear before the investigative panel probing the incident on Tuesday.

The invitation came barely 24 hours after her lawyer and and Executive Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, claimed that the victim had not been invited by any panel. 
 
But it was not clear why the letter dated April 19 2018 was not immediately released to her. 
 
Osagie was an MBA regular student of the OAU and was said to have gone into hiding since the sex-for-marks scandal broke out. 
 
The letter inviting Osagie dated April 19 2018 from the Office of the Secretary, Post-Graduate College, was obtained by our correspondent on Saturday in Jos. 
 
The letter with Ref. No: ADP 15/16/H/1424 entitled: “Re: Investigative panel on alleged harassment of a female student: Detailed audio recording: Request for the presentation of Miss Osagie Monica Oselode”, was signed by the OAU Deputy Registrar and Post-Graduate College Secretary, Mrs. A.O. Fadeyibi. 
 
The letter reads: “I write at the instance of the Provost, Post-Graduate College to invite you to appear before the investigative panel on alleged harassment of a female student detailed in audio recording at its meeting which will come up at 10:00am on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. 
 
“Please be informed that on arrival, you are required to call the Secretary to the panel to facilitate your appearance before the panel. Thank you.” 
 
Akiyode-Afolabi had raised the alarm that Osagie, “resorted to self-help” through audio recording after two lecturers approached by her for intervention disappointed her. 
 
According to her, several efforts made by her in reporting her predicament to two senior lecturers in the Faculty of Administration were unsuccessful as they both refused to intervene, adding that she therefore resorted to self- help in documenting her evidence. 
 
Akiyode-Afolabi, a former Public Officer of the OAU Students Union Government, therefore called on the school authorities “not to compromise the reputation of this old and respected university and its responsibility for protecting its students in a bid to covering the unethical and disgraceful behavior of individual lecturers.</div>

Miss Monica Osagie, the student at the centre of a sex-for-mark scandal rocking the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has denied shunning an invitation by the panel probing her audio tapes of her conversation with disgraced Professor Richard Akindele, who demanded five rounds of sex for marks.

She made the denial via proxy, and said she was awaiting an invitation by the panel, the Saturday Sun newspaper reported. 
 
Her proxy, Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Founder, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, a non-profit organisation, said that the university did not at any point invite Miss Osagie to face the panel. 
 
She challenged the university to bring evidence that she was formally invited by any means to appear before the panel. 
 
“Before the matter went viral, the university was aware of it and they did not do anything. If the case did not go viral, the university probably would have not done anything and it would have been swept under the carpet. 
 
“I think that we should focus more on whether the act of that professor amounts to sexual harassment, whether it was a breach of the school’s code of conduct, whether it was a breach of terms of contract for lecturers or whether he abused the relationship that should exist between lecturers and students.” 
 
Afolabi stated that the university should be responsible and responsive in addressing issues of sexual harassment because Miss Osagie is ready to come out whenever the university extends a proper invitation to her, adding that it appears the school wants to protect its reputation at the expense of the young lady. 
 
“Let the university do what they are supposed to do by giving her proper invitation. They have all her records because she is their student. The panel has never invited her, so when the panel invites her today, she would come.” 
 
Akiyode-Afolabi further noted that even though Miss Osagie made the recording to serve as evidence against her lecturer, “she didn’t release the audio. She got the evidence and it was given to one or two people when she was seeking for help. So definitely one of them released the audio, and she cannot be blamed for it.” 
 
Akiyode-Afolabi stated that there has not been any threat made against Monica. “We are not comfortable with the university saying they invited her when they didn’t invite her. Her name is already out, the whole world is aware so we cannot say because of security and safety, we won’t allow the truth to prevail.” 
 
According to the panel report, only the suspended lecturer honoured its invitation while the lady neither showed up before the panel to defend her case nor wrote a formal complaint to the institution to defend the leaked audio. 
 
“We will like to reiterate that OAU will continue to do everything legally and morally acceptable in pursuance of its avowed commitment to zero tolerance for sexual harassment, intimidation and, or coercion,” the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, said in a statement. 
 
Akiyode-Afolabi said Monica hasn’t done anything wrong and is unapologetic about what she did. 
 
“I think society should focus on what really happened, and whether such should happen in higher institutions of learning and not about what she did.”</div>

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged the Cameroonian authority not to send Nigerian refugees back to the Boko Haram violence they fled from.

“We appeal once again to the authorities in Cameroon to refrain from further forced returns and to ensure protection to those fleeing insecurity and persecution in Nigeria. 
 
“This is in accordance with Cameroon’s national and international obligations,” UNHCR said. 
 
Since the beginning of 2018, 385 Nigerians refugees and asylum-seekers had been forcibly returned from Cameroon, the majority of them in March, including 160 on April 10 and a further 118 a week later. 
 
In total, the UN agency has registered some 87,600 Nigerian refugees in the country. 
 
UNHCR said: “The forced returns are in violation of the principle of no forced returns or non-refoulement. 
 
“They are also a significant setback to progress previously achieved by Cameroon in granting asylum to Nigerian civilians fleeing Boko Haram violence”. 
 
UNHCR also noted that it recognised legitimate national security concerns of States affected by the Boko Haram crisis, and stressed that it is important that refugee protection and national security are not seen as being incompatible. 
 
“Properly functioning screening, registration and asylum systems help safeguard host country security,” it said. 
 
UNHCR reiterated its support to the Government of Cameroon to ensure that all those seeking international protection have access to efficient screening and registration procedures, as well as appropriate reception arrangements.</div>

The senator representing Katsina South, Abu Ibrahim, on Friday said the President Muhammadu Buhari Support Group would be inaugurating its offices in three states in the South-South on Monday.

He said the inauguration would kick-start Buhari’s re-election process. 
 
Ibrahim disclosed this in an interview with the State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, adding that campaign buses would also be inaugurated on the same day. 
 
The senator said despite the recent invasion of the Senate chambers by suspected thugs, the National Assembly remained one. 
 
He said, “I will like to use this opportunity to assure Nigerians that the National Assembly is still one and stabilised. 
 
“Obviously, what has happened calls for concern. But at the same time, we have to accept that in Nigeria and all over the world, politics sometimes can create a situation of this nature. 
 
“This has actually given us two opportunities; one, to look at the security of the National Assembly itself. In fact, the Nigerian National Assembly is the most unsafe I have seen in my life or everywhere I have gone around the world. 
 
“Every National Assembly has good security, you cannot just go in, you cannot just access officers, but the case is different here. Like in my office yesterday, there were over 60 people waiting for me but had no appointment. So, this has influenced us to sit down and critically examine the security at the National Assembly itself. 
 
“Secondly, we sat in an executive session as senators and asked ourselves pertinent questions about what happened and why. We came out with the promise that everyone of us will support and abide by the provisions of the constitution, our rules in the National Assembly and obviously, we accepted that we are all senators, the same rank elected by our people and the same rights and privileges. 
 
“This is, therefore, the benefit of the crisis which happened two days ago, if I can call it so. So, I still assure Nigerians that the National Assembly has come out of this crisis better, much more united and much more focused.” 
 
On whether the Senate would sanction culprits identified in the disappearance of the mace, Ibrahim said the case was now with security agencies. 
 
“You know that this thing has gone out of our hands and is with the security agencies. Therefore, we cannot be creating more problems for ourselves. We have to know who did what and what were the reasons for doing these things? So, we need to have a report. 
 
“I think the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services may have to come and brief the National Assembly on what happened. We have cautioned ourselves too because some people have even quoted courts saying that no National Assembly has the power to suspend any member. 
 
“So, we have to look at these areas very thoroughly before we take another action and we have to get the report from the security agencies,” he said.

 Have all required supporting documents 
 
The documents for a successful passport application include: Local Government letter of identification, Birth certificate/age declaration, 2 recent colour passport photographs, Guarantor's form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge, Parents' letter of consent for minors under 16 years, Marriage certificate where applicable and police report in case of lost passport. 
 
Fill the online application 
 
Simply visit the Nigerian Immigration portal (<a href="https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/">https://portal.immigration.gov.ng</a>), click on 'apply for passport', select type of passport and Processing country. When you are done with this, fill the online application with the correct information. Also, know that any false declaration on the form may lead to the withdrawal of the passport and/or your prosecution. 
 
Make payment 
 
After the approval of your online application, the next thing to do is make payment. You can use any of the available payment gateway provided. The fee for payment depends on your the number of passport pages and your age. For 32 pages- Age 0 - 17 (N8,750), 18-59 (15,000) and 60+ (N8,750) and for 64 pages, it is N20,000 for all ages. Besides, you will pay more if you go through the back door. If the page does not redirect you, go back to the NIS homepage, click on the "Query your Application Payment Status" and enter your Passport Application ID and Reference Number. Follow the instructions to confirm payment and endeavour to print your payment receipt. 
 Go for scheduled interview after confirmation of payment 
 
Know that after you have confirmed your payment, the date and time of your interview will be generated. Attend the interview with all your documents at the Immigration office you have chosen on the portal. 
 Get your passport 
 
The chances of receiving your passport after the interview are very slim. You will likely be told to come back for your passport.

Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has on Friday denied an alleged publication from an Online media over his involvement in a N10 billion fraud scandal.

In a statement signed and sent to journalists on Friday by Yusuph Olaniyonu, Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to the President of the Senate, Saraki emphatically stated that he had nothing do with any payment, receipt or disbursement of any extra-budgetary funds.

Response to False Publication from Online Platform 
 
Again, our attention has been drawn to a publication by an online platform, which unethically alleges without any proof, reference, attribution or justification that the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, was involved in receiving or sharing any unauthorized funds. 
 
The article, entitled “EXCLUSIVE: Minister Adeosun, Saraki, Dogara, Accountant General in N10 billion fraud scandal”, in its style, substance, and deliberate spin struggles to connect the Senate President to the receipt and apportioning of funds which the publication describes as “illegal.” 
 
In the absence of any doubt, the Senate President has nothing to do with any payment, receipt or disbursement of any extra-budgetary funds. 
 
It is also important to state for the record that the Online article in question is pure and unmitigated false news. A simple check by this media would have revealed that all funds in the National Assembly are in the custody of the National Assembly Management, which is headed by the Clerk, and not its presiding officers. 
 
Additionally, all contract awards are equally overseen by the National Assembly management, not the presiding officers. 
 
We are aware that for some weeks now, this Online platform has had this story. However, they only contacted us on Wednesday, and the Clerk of the National Assembly, after a phone call from the Special Adviser on Media & Publicity to the Senate President, promised to give them all necessary explanation and documents on this issue. 
 
However, it is obvious that in the bid to rope in Senator Saraki, the reporters of  this Online media platform could not wait to see the Clerk and rushed to publish the story less than 24 hours after the clerk made the aforementioned promise — with outright falsehood. 
 
We are surprised that without any proof whatsoever,  this online platform was using expressions like: “Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have just illegally received and shared”; “Saraki and Dogara submitted”; and “Investigations by this online media showed that at least 44 of the 82 contractors Messrs Saraki and Dogara…” These are highly defamatory and careless expressions. 
 
It is expected, that the Editors of Premium Times will not be ignorant of the internal procurement and payment process in an organization like the National Assembly that they have covered and “investigated” for as long as they (the online media) has been in existence. 
 
We consider this as part of the orchestrated campaign of calumny being waged against Dr. Saraki by some political elements using media platforms in which they have interests. 
 
In this regard, for this careless and unwarranted assault on the person of the Senate President — after several previous warnings — the lawyers of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, will be initiating legal action on this particular matter. 
 
Finally, we ask the public to disregard the Online media piece, and take it for what it is, and will continue to be: “Fake News.”

Unveiling the new name and logo at a media parley Friday in Abuja, former Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande noted that, “for too long, we have allowed the opposition to take control of the media space while we will now be reacting”. 
 
He said the Buhari administration has a lot of masses oriented programmes and policies which must be publicized for Nigerians to understand the trajectory of the administration.

Murray-Bruce, who spoke on behalf of Senate President, Bukola Saraki at TheNiche 4th anniversary lecture in Lagos, said it would be honourary for those that mastermind the evil act to follow the part of democracy. 
 
“What happened was a disgrace and does not make any sense. Looking at it critically, they were working for change in Senate leadership, but they left what they suppose to do and engaged in undemocratic act. 
 
“If you want to impeach the President for instance, all you need to do is to put it into vote and majority will have their way instead of stealing the mace. 
 
Murray-Bruce added that there was clear evidence of conspiracy in the whole scenario, “come to think of it, behind us is where the President lives, so to access and escape through the back where the President lives, considering the presence of security gives room for many questions that need answers. 
 
“As far as Senate President Bukola Saraki is concerned, he is a good man, there will be no regime change, they are only wasting time. 
 
Murray-Bruce however, commended the media for active role played by informing the whole world. 
 
“Those perpetrators are not genius, they thought we are in the era of 1945 to 1960 when there was only NTA and FRCN where they could decide to break news four days later. With modern day media, information breaks on a go.” 
 
Speaking on the theme, “Development Reporting and Hysteria Journalism in Nigeria”, Former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria and Presidential aspirant, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu said that the tradition of investigative journalism is dying slowly as news becomes commercialized. 
 
He pointed out that the only way developmental journalism can still be practised in a society like Nigeria was through investigative journalism, “but sadly we do not have enough of this. 
“There is so much that is wrong with our country today and vibrant investigative journalism can help to change what is wrong in our country. 
 
In her own contribution, Professor of French Language and Applied Linguistics, Obafemi Awolowo University and former Presidential Candidate, Prof. Remi Sonaiya urged the media to avail Nigerians with all the available options as 2019 Election is approaching. 
 
“Media need to be neutral and allow all the aspirants to present their agenda to Nigerians because during the last election only the two front-runners were projected and we can all see where we are now as a country.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed its National Working Committee (NWC) to work towards the constitution of a shadow cabinet to guide the party’s blueprint for economic recovery and good governance.

The party also said it is championing a coalition of forces to work towards the common goal of ousting the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in the next general elections. 
 
These were some of the resolutions reached by the party at the end of its 79th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held on Thursday. 
 
A party statement made available to journalists yesterday, reiterated the commitment of the party to reach out to Nigerians in their numbers ahead of the general elections. 
 
“The NEC directs that the NWC commences action towards the establishment of a shadow cabinet to pilot PDP’s roadmap towards national economic recovery and good governance, in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians, ahead of the 2019 general elections. 
 
“That the PDP should lead a strong conversation and discussion towards a formal coalition of democratic forces to guarantee Nigerians the much desired all-inclusive platform ahead of 2019 general elections. 
 
“That the PDP doors remain widely open to all Nigerians, groups and like-minded political parties to foster a strong rallying point for the determined quest by Nigerians to rescue the nation from the misrule of the APC and enthrone good governance in our country,” the statements read in part.

In spite of the warning by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that debt levels in African economies were rising, Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun on Friday said Nigeria’s debt level was still sustainable and under control.

Speaking to newsmen on the sideline of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings at the ongoing 2018 IMF and World Bank meetings in Washington DC, Adeosun said Nigeria had nothing to worry about. 
 
“It is correct that debt levels in low income countries is a threat but Nigeria is better described as a middle income country. 
 
“The concern that has been expressed, and it’s a legitimate one, is that debt levels in those countries are at 55 per cent of GDP which is very high but Nigeria’s is at less than 20. 
 
“So we are not one of the countries they have expressed concerns about. However, we will continue to manage our debt very very responsibly. 
 
“We are at 20 per cent of GDP and we do not intend to grow it aggressively. We are doing well at the moment as debt rate to revenue is going down gradually as we replace debt with revenue and refinancing our debt,” she said. 
 
Adeosun said the government would keep monitoring and analysing its debt levels at every stage so that they don’t fall into the trap that most African States had fallen into. 
 
The Minister reminded Nigerians that due to recession and near collapse of major sources of income, which it had inherited, from the former administration, the government had no choice but to borrow in order to save the country. 
 
“There were two options. One was austerity,  cut back,  lay people off,  and wait for the oil prices to rebound. 
 
“The other was to be more aggressive by expanding the budget,  take on more debt and invest in infrastructure in the hope that you will get growth going and then you will be able to develop more revenues. 
 
“Step one, two and three of that has been done. We expanded our budget, we pumped money into the economy, we made sure that recession wasn’t prolonged and we are now back into growth. 
 
“What we need to do now is to accelerate that growth and focus on revenue mobilisation which in turn will reduce our debt pressures. 
 
“Some of the ministers that I was in the meeting with are still in recession. And that means real pain for a long time. 
 
“”In Nigeria, to shorten it,  we had to borrow in order to do so and I make no apologies for that,  that was the right thing to do,” she said. 
 
On Thursday, the IMF Managing Director,  Ms Christine Lagarde opined that Global debt stood at 164 trillion dollars which was 25 per cent of global GDP. 
 
She said the rising debt levels presented risk to low income countries. 
 
Lagarde said such countries may face hardship and be unable to repay these debt if they do not look for alternative measures to borrowing.</div>

The Academic Staff Union (ASUU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, says it is satisfied with the suspension Prof. Richard Akindele, who was allegedly involved in a sex-for-mark scandal.

Dr Adeola Egbedodun, the Chairperson of the union, in a statement in Osogbo on Friday, commended the university management for the prompt action taken on the recommendations of the investigative panel. 
 
Newsmen report that Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, the OAU Vice-Chancellor, on Thursday confirmed the suspension of the professor. 
 
Ogunbodede, in a statement, said he had received and considered the interim report of the committee set up to investigate the allegation, as revealed in the audio recording. 
 
The Vice-Chancellor also said that the female voice in the audio had been identified as that of Miss Monica Osetobe Osagie, a postgraduate student on the Master of Business Administration programme. 
 
NAN also recalls that a recorded audio conversation of the don demanding for sex to increase the marks of a female postgraduate had gone viral. 
 
Egbedokun, however, urged the Vice Chancellor and his team not to relent in their efforts to get to the root of the matter and ensure that justice was done. 
 
“The Obafemi Awolowo University Branch ASUU commends the administration for the step taken towards ensuring sanity in the system. 
 
“The union expresses satisfaction on the prompt action taken by the administration.

Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris has ordered the transfer of the Kwara state police commissioner, Alhaji Lawan Ado with immediate effect.

Consequently, Mr. Idris has named Mr. Aminu Pai Saleh as the new police commissioner for the state. 
Sources close to the state police command in Ilorin Friday told Vanguard that, the state police commissioner, Mr. Ado has been redeployed to Police College in Kaduna.‎ 
 
Vanguard reliably gathered that his transfer might not be unconnected with the recent attack of five bank robbery that happened Offa in Offa local government council of the state. 
 
But sources at the police headquarters however told Vanguard that‎ the transfer was routine and that it had nothing to do with the handling of Offa bank robbery. 
 
According to the source, “If anything, the CP tried his best in his handling of Offa bank robbery incident before it was transferred, and he got commendations from everywhere,not any complain” 
 
The attack officially claimed about 17 lives including 9 policemen while several people who also sustained serious injuries and now recuperating at both University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and General Hospital, Ilorin. 
 
Meanwhile,no fewer than thirty persons were reportedly killed in the bloody bank robbery. 
 
In view of the unfortunate development,the IGP also deployed two mobile units of the police force to Offa, even as some arrest had been made in connection with the attack. 
 
Among the prime suspects in police net is Mr. Kayode Opadokun, son of the foremost activist, Chief Ayo Opadokun. 
 
Saleh who was until his new appointment was in charge of Police College, Kaduna. 
 
Sources added that, the new commissioner of police, Mr. Saleh would resume duty in Ilorin today(Friday) 
 
Contacted, the state police command Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ajayi Okasanmi who confirmed the redeployment of former commissioner of police, Alhaji Ado to Police College, Kaduna however declined further comment on the new posting of his former boss.</div>

The police service commission on Friday promoted eighteen senior officers including the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Mustapha Magu.

This was made known in a statement signed and sent to newsmen by Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani. 
 
However, Magu who was a Deputy Commissioner was promoted to a Commissioner of police along with other senior police officers. 
 
The statement reads thus: 
 
PSC APPROVES PROMOTION OF 18 SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS, OSHODI-GLOVER, DIG, GHAZZALI MOHAMMED, PEACE IBEKWE ABDALLAH, AIGs, MAGU, ONYEAGORO, GBOLARUMI, CPs 
 
The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of eighteen senior Police Officers. The promotions are one of the high points of the Commission’s 27thPlenary Meeting which ended in Abuja today, Friday, April 20th, 2018. The Meeting was presided over by the Commission’s Chairman Sir. Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro, a retired Inspector General of the Police. 
 
The Commission approved the promotion of AIG Agbola Oshodi-Glover in charge of Zone 11, Osogbo, to the next rank of a Deputy Inspector General of Police. 
 
CP Ghazzali Mohammed, Commissioner of Police, Administration, DLS, Force Headquarters and CP Peace Ibekwe Abdallah, former Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command and currently , CP, Force Intelligence Bureau, Force Headquarters were promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police. 
 
The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, DCP Ibrahim Mustapha Magu, DCP Ebere C. Onyeagoro, DCP Administration, Kaduna State Command and DCP Moshood O. Gbolarumi, DCP Maritime, Lagos, were promoted to the next rank of Commissioner of Police. 
 
Other promotions approved by the Commission include; one Assistant Commissioner of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nine Chief Superintendents of Police to assistant Commissioners of Police, one Deputy Superintendent of Police to Superintendent of Police, one assistant Superintendent of Police to Deputy Superintendent of Police and one Inspector to assistant Superintendent of Police. 
 
Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Okiro congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to rededicate themselves to the service of their fatherland. He assured them that the Commission will continue to pay attention to their basic entitlements which include regular promotions.</div>

Nigerians in the Diaspora under the auspices of Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group, NDMG, have stated that the recent call by the Senate for President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the nation’s service chiefs was in furtherance of their ploy to separate the President from his appointees who are diligent.

The group dismissed the state of insecurity on which the lawmakers predicated their call as a smokescreen, stressing that security breaches that would have been insignificant in the past are now being highlighted for public attention owing to the dearth of more devastating news. 
 
NDMG, which reacted in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Secretary-General, Uchenna D. Okereke, stated that the disposition of the senators can demoralise troops in the battle front and give Boko Haram terrorists an upper hand. 
 
The group maintained that the demand being made by the senators on Buhari is politically motivated and an integral part of manoeuvring for the 2019 general elections, stressing that the senators do not have the capacity to assess the ongoing war against terrorism, and that hiring of experts is not enough to educate lawmakers on the enormity of what the military contend with in the theatre of war. 
 
The statement reads in full “The Nigerians in Diasporas Monitoring Group [NDMG] is dismayed by the demand from the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria asking that the military service chiefs be changed. The security situation in the country, which Senators cited as their reason, is nothing but a smokescreen given their history of continually trying to isolate President Muhammadu Buhari from the performing ones among his appointees. 
 
“NDMG is saddened that the demand by the lawmakers is premised on anecdotal evidences and not the subject of statistical analyses that would have showed that there has been improvement in the responsiveness to security breaches on the part of the Armed Forces. The reality is that incidences that would have been insignificant in the past are now highlighted for public attention for lack of more devastating news; interpreting this as bad has the tendency to demoralize troops and hand the initiative to terrorists. 
 
“Coming from lawmakers, who are statutorily expected to use their position to promote peace and stability in the country, we find the demand disconcerting and worrisome. This is especially so when information emanating from certain quarters confirm that the demand is politically motivated and an integral part of the 2019 General Elections manoeuvring. 
 
“We invite the Senators to take cognisance of their place as politicians who may not have the requisite competences to assess the counter-insurgency war; this is also not a field where consultants can bring the lawmakers up to speed since it takes those in the war theatre to fully appreciate the enormity of what the military contend with on a minute by minute basis. 
 
“The safety and security of Nigerians is more important than the political gains derivable from maligning the military. We therefore align with the individuals and organizations that had challenged the Senate to come up with legislative interventions aimed at bolstering the military’s capacity to combat the evolving threats facing the country instead of searching for scapegoats. In this, we recommend that the federal lawmakers understudy their contemporaries around the world to understand the kind of support the military requires to combat terrorism. 
 
“We further challenge the lawmakers to be decisive in charting a course for the future of policing in Nigeria so that the military services can re-focus on their constitutional mandates without the distraction of cleaning up situations that do not require military deployments in other climes. This must concomitantly be backed with realistic budgeting, which a simple comparative analysis with other country will show is totally lacking when what they spend on their armies is considered. 
 
“While we advise the Senate to walk back its poorly thought out position, we use this opportunity to appeal to the military chiefs and the troops under their commands not to be discouraged by the demand from the lawmakers. They should see the call as a minor skirmish in the psychological component of the ongoing counter-insurgency operation. Nigerians, the electorates who these lawmakers represent, greatly appreciate what the service chiefs have done so far. 
 
“Nigeria shall prevail against every primordial interest or sentiment by its traducers and become great again for all her citizens in the nearest future. Let us continue to believe and support the performing ones like the current crop of Service Chiefs in our country.”</div>

The Advanced Peoples’ Democratic Alliance (APDA) has said the Party will not enter into any pact with other political parties or groups ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The Party’s National Chairman, Shittu Mohammed Kabir, made this known yesterday when he received a delegation of political youth groups from Imo state led by Chief Iheanacho Ezeakor, at the Party’s national secretariat in Abuja. 
 
Kabir, who maintained that the Party’s nationalistic ideologies would never be compromised for selfish benefits, said blamed the economic hardships experienced in the country on the errors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the champions of the ‘third force’ movement. 
 
His words: “APDA is not going into any coalition ahead of the 2019 general elections. We cannot be seen compromising our nationalistic ideology. 
 
“We see Nigeria as one big family where the welfare of all citizens remains paramount. It is against that background that we cannot queue behind the PDP, the APC, or those promoting the ‘Third Force’ movement. 
 
“These people brought the hardship in the country. Olu Falae as far back as the 1980’s was part of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) that ruined our agricultural sector. 
 
“I am a farmer. I grow beans but I cannot export to Europe because Nigerian beans are banned abroad. But, today, beans are brought into this country from Europe. Then, tell me, why did they sign us up to the World Trade Organisation in the first place? 
 
“Look at the oil from the South-South and South-East. How has these politicians advocating for coalitions and mergers used that crude oil to better the lives of the people in those areas? 
 
“So, our position is clear. We are not going into any alliance. However, we are open to all Nigerians who want to join us in the pursuit of our people-oriented ideology. 
 
He further urged the youths to resist politicians who attempt to polarize the nation and heat-up the polity needlessly. 
 
“You should never allow our political leaders to continue in power by means of ‘divide and rule’ antics. Rather, develop passion for people and work to achieve a better life for them. That way, you can successful take over helm of affairs of the nation from these old politicians,” he said. 
 
Earlier, leader of the delegation, Chief Iheanacho Ezeakor, said that the group had been mobilizing the youths across the country to awaken their political consciousness and make contributions towards nation-building. 
 
Ezeakor said that one of the reasons for the visit was to spread the message of youth inclusion in governance; stressing that democracy without youth-participation loses its vibrancy. 
 
He also said that there was also need for youths to build inter-ethnic bridges and cross-fertilise ideas on ameliorating the sufferings in the land and avoiding the mistakes of the past. 
 
“Today, we have been able to mobilise and motivate some young people across the country for a political renaissance because we realize that the reason older politicians looked down on the youths in political appointments and elective positions had to do with how the youths conducted themselves. 
 
“However, we are poised to changing that story. We will continue to be a voice for the youths and set laudable examples in our states,” he said.</div>

He said the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC) will not count their tweets on election day. 
 
Many young Nigerians have been tweeting non-stop with #LazyNigerianYouth and #LazyNigerianYouths to convey their displeasure at President Muhammadu Buhari’s “sit and do nothing” remark. 
 
The president on Wednesday said many Nigerian youth have not been to school yet they want free education, health and housing. 
 
Commenting on the trending hashtag, the ‘Made For You’ singer said: “I have a suggestion. Whether you agree or disagree with the President’s comments, this time, do a little bit more than posting, commenting, retweeting, and complaining. Go and register to vote. 
 
“I’ve sat in countless meetings, seminars, conferences and hangouts with young people. We are always great at pointing out our issues.. but the truth is that we can sit around and complain from now until Kingdom come. It will not matter. INEC will not count your tweets. Let’s turn the month of May into #PVCMay. 
 
“Even if you don’t know who you’re voting for.. even if you hate every single candidate. At least register.. so that if someone comes along who you feel compelled to support, you can. 
“If you’re really serious about wanting Nigeria to be a better place, go and register to vote. Get your PVC asap. The registration period will end LONG before the elections come, so if you think you can wait until next year, you are wrong.

Former Nigeria captain, Nwankwo Kanu has revealed that former Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel is the player that can solve Super Eagles’s creative problem ahead of the 2018 World Cup tournament in Russia.

An improvement in Nigeria’s oil earnings is on course as prices held firm on Friday near three-year highs reached earlier this week as ongoing OPEC-led supply cuts, as well as strong demand, gradually draw down excess supplies.

Brent crude oil futures were up at 73.79 dollars per barrel at 0440 GMT.U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures down 2 cents at 68.40 dollars a barrel. 
 
Both Brent, which Nigeria produces, and WTI hit their highest levels since November 2014 on Thursday, at 74.75 and 69.56 dollars per barrel respectively. 
 
WTI is set for its second weekly gain. 
 
Oil prices have been pushed up by a gradually tightening market. 
 
Led by top exporter Saudi Arabia, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has been withholding production since 2017 to draw down a global supply overhang. 
 
The tighter oil market is feeding into refined products. 
 
Oil supply tightness is also a result of healthy oil demand. 
 
Beyond OPEC’s supply management, crude prices have also been supported by an expectation that the United States will re-introduce sanctions on OPEC-member Iran.</div>

The Lagos State Government has raised the alarm over increasing rate of wives beaten their husbands in the state, saying that 138 of such cases had been reported in the state in the last one year.

In 2016, at 55 men were beaten by their wives in Lagos, while in 2017, it rose to 138, which represents an increase of over 100 percent of women violating their husbands in the state. 
 
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem disclosed on Tuesday that there had been rising cases of women beaten men in the state. 
 
He said the Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) of the Ministry of Justice had been inundated with several cases of women beaten in the state. 
 
“The Ministry has noted an increase in report of domestic abuse against men. To date, the DSVRT has received a total number of 138 cases in this regard,” he lamented. 
 
He added that overall, a total number of 1771 cases of domestic violence were reported in the state in the last one year. 
 
Kazeem also said that DSVRT had provided free medical services and psycho-social therapy for over 700 survivors of domestic/sexual violence, conducted capacity building training with 220 police officers across the State, and successfully secured the conviction of seven perpetrators. 
 
On the Citizens’ Mediation Centre (CMC), the government said the centre received a total number of 47,292 new cases free of charge out of which 25,191 were resolved with others at various stages of resolution. 
 
“The total value of settlement of debt related matters achieved by the Centre during the period under review from May 2017 to April 2018 as settlement between parties was N1,352,745,391,” Kazeem said.
