I, with your permission, proceeded to Taraba on the 23rd of September 2018, to prepare for the presidential and governorship primaries then scheduled for the 25th and 29th of September 2018 respectively.<br /> <br /> While preparing for the primaries in Jalingo, I received with the shock and dismay that I was disqualified and not cleared to contest for the 2019 governorship by the National Working Committee of the party (APC). No reason was given for my disqualification.<br /> <br /> Mr President may wish to be also informed that I had always been a very committed and loyal party member and was at no time queried or admonished for any wrongdoing or unconstitutional behaviour. Up to the time of writing this letter, no reason is given by the party for my disqualification to contest election under the APC.<br /> <br /> It is for the above reasons sir, that I feel grave injustice was done to me by the party (APC), therefore my decision to leave the party and also resign my appointment as minister. The command after receiving the report mobilised patrol teams immediately to the scene of crime.<br /> <br /> ”The unknown gunmen who took advantage of the ongoing rain in the area to attack residents were forced to run from the scene by the combined superior gun fire of the Police and the Operation Safe Haven (STF).<br /> <br /> ”Some people who reside close to the hills were rescued while some persons lost their lives as a result of the attack and some others sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos, and are currently receiving treatment.<br /> <br /> ”The combined security is out to contain the situation in Jos. As such, members of the public are to remain calm and law-abiding. Meanwhile, patrol of the area is being intensified and investigation in the crime has commenced.”<br /> <br /> The police did not say how many people died.<br /> <br /> A human rights activist, Dashe Joshua, however, slammed the security agencies for their inability to prevent the killings.<br /> <br /> His words: “The security agencies have completely failed in their primary responsibility.<br /> <br /> “How can gunmen penetrate the city and perpetrate such crime? <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ME2JFk66jDZmpIPeISkgpcIt1fDMX58m3YCJayrKYCmjZkaHLgVxt7fsTG0JjJ_I54vzDrn6YnscR3hduxoh7qYchBQMYldiseMHEQ1frgNWKJfkLcgXI_iehvnKRein_jvbqFApZroL/s1600/asuu.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ME2JFk66jDZmpIPeISkgpcIt1fDMX58m3YCJayrKYCmjZkaHLgVxt7fsTG0JjJ_I54vzDrn6YnscR3hduxoh7qYchBQMYldiseMHEQ1frgNWKJfkLcgXI_iehvnKRein_jvbqFApZroL/s400/asuu.jpg" /></a></div> The Academic Staff Union of Universities has described the proposed education bank and tuition scheme by the Federal Government as a ploy to commercialise public university education and thereby encourage private universities in the country.<br /> <br /> ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Port Harcourt Zone, Uzo Onyebinama, said that the proposed scheme by the Federal Government was an effort to commercialise university education in the country.<br /> <br />  Onyebinama, who spoke with journalists at the University of Port Harcourt on Thursday, explained that the scheme, if approved, would deny the poor access to higher education.<br /> <br /> He noted that the Federal Government’s introduction of the scheme into the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU and the Federal Government’s agreement process was an attempt to blackmail the union before the Nigerian students.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> He said, “ASUU believes that education is a public good and therefore, the union considers the proposal for an Education Bank and a Students’ Loan Scheme as a deliberate effort to commercialise public universities<br /> <br />  “It is also an incentive for private universities to thrive and ultimately deny poor Nigerians access to university education.<br /> <br /> “ASUU views the attempt by the government team to introduce the issue of Education Bank and Student’s Loan Scheme into the renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government of Nigeria and ASUU agreement as an attempt to blackmail the union before the Nigerian students and the general public.”<br /> <br /> Onyebinama however appealed to Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to restart the renegotiation process and pay all salary shortfalls in all universities verified under the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Auditing.<br /> <br /> “We are therefore using this opportunity to appeal to well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to show good faith and restart the renegotiation process.<br /> <br /> “The Federal Government can do this by reconstituting the current government team and implementing the outstanding components of the 2017 Memorandum of Agreement through the release of the forensic audit report on the payments earned academic allowances.”<br /> <br />  The zonal coordinator urged the Federal Government to engage state governors in tackling the issues of underfunding, undue interference in administration of state universities and others.</div>

Additional details on the incident will be communicated later.”<br /> <br /> The statement was a follow-up to an earlier one released by Daramola, which had claimed that no life was lost in the incident.<br /> <br /> An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that the two jets dangled in the air for about three minutes before falling down.<br /> <br /> He said the pilots were seen ejecting, adding that one died on landing on a rock while another, who landed on the ground was unable to sit up.<br /> <br /> According to him, the parachute of the dead pilot malfunctioned causing him to land with force on a rock while the other pilot with severe injury found it difficult to activate his.<br /> <br /> He said the security agencies drafted to the scene shortly after the incident attempted to arrest people, who had earlier rushed to the scene to rescue the victims.<br /> <br /> He said: “I was one of the few persons, who witnessed everything that happened. As they were displaying, we saw that the two smaller jets flying in between a bigger one collided and started dangling in the air. Suddenly, we saw three pilots coming down on parachutes. But while one had no problem, one was seen struggling to activate his own properly while the third one malfunctioned. He landed with force on the ground and died there immediately.<br /> <br /> “He was not able to lose the parachute. We saw it clearly that somebody died there. They drove us out and they were even trying to arrest us with their guns. We told them that we were the first rescuers that came here. “They just came with their guns as if we are Boko Haram insurgents. Since two weeks they have been disturbing this neighbourhood.’’<br /> <br /> Another eyewitness, who also pleaded anonymity said: “They were close to each other and we thought it was the sound of a wire from an electric pole. It was not up to three minutes that this thing happened.”<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, security agents deployed to the scene had taken strategic positions in the area.<br /> <br /> A State House photojournalist, who had firsthand photographs of the incident, was manhandled, just as his camera was seized by the security agents.<br /> <br /> Pilot of one of the jets Mohammed Baba-Ari was killed and was buried yesterday.</div>

NLC Chairman in the state, Comrade Virgilus Nwobodo who confirmed the development said the state workers were divided but that majority were of the opinion that the workers have never been paid minimum wage and so the strike may not be beneficial to them.<br /> <br /> “Some said that President Buhari is someone who would not listen to workers even if they stay on strike for ever. Others said that the last time they went on strike over minimum wage, the then Governor Sullivan Chime only gave them award and so they said if they don’t embark on strike now maybe Governor Ugwuanyi may decide to pay the minimum wage after all he has been paying salaries promptly.”<br /> <br /> Nwobodo however noted that more enforcement for the strike was carried out in the state on the second day of the strike naming institutions picketed yesterday to include the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC;the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA;banks among other organisations. He stated that the enforcement would continue on Tuesday if the strike was not called off before then.</div>

Those who were going fast, where did they get to?<br /> <br /> “In 1983, military officers gathered and made me Head of State. I packed the politicians into jail, told them they were guilty until they could prove their innocence. We seized what they had looted, but after I myself was put in detention, the politicians were given back what they had looted. How many elite complained about that?<br /> <br /> “Three times I contested elections; three times I went to court after the elections were rigged against me. No justice, but I said ‘God dey.’ It was mainly the people that stood by me. That is why I am always conscious of them. They are my constituency. Even pregnant women in the queue would fall into labour, go to have their babies, and still come back to vote for me. They have relatively done well. I think by December the whole work should be ready. The problem is the launching of beams to cross the bridge and the laying of tracks because you can’t lay tracks unless you cross the bridge.<br /> <br /> “They have about four or five (bridges) to Lagos and even if they want to launch them together, it will take three months because if they don’t launch it, we can’t cross. That is why I said they need to get more equipment. If they don’t get more equipment then we have a problem.”<br /> <br /> Amaechi, however, said government was still on course to meet the December deadline, adding that the issues on the stations’ design would be concluded in two weeks. He noted Nigerians were eager to see results.</div>

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will, tomorrow, pick the governorship candidates of the two parties for next year’s elections.<br /> <br /> The primaries will be held in all but six of the 36 states.<br /> <br /> Excluded are Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states because governorship elections in those states will be held in later years.<br /> <br /> The acting National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Yekini Nabena, said direct primaries will be used in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kano, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Taraba and Zamfara.<br /> <br /> Adamawa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Yobe are to use indirect primaries.<br /> <br /> The two parties have had to adjust their timetables for the primaries several times in the last one month to accommodate inputs of various vested interest groups and to ensure rancour-free voting.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Ahead of its primaries,the APC in Lagos State yesterday commenced the distribution of identification cards to its members.<br /> <br /> The state chairman of the party, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, led other executive members to distribute the cards at the ACME Road secretariat of the party in Ikeja.<br /> <br /> The cards were distributed to members through selected party leaders across the different councils in the state.<br /> <br /> Addressing the selected party leaders, Balogun said the move was to enable members participate in the governorship and subsequent primaries.<br /> <br /> He said no fewer than 1.7 million cards were issued based on the data of members.<br /> <br /> He appealed to the representatives to ensure the cards were delivered to registered members in their respective areas immediately, saying: ”We have carefully selected you because of your good records in your areas and because we believe you can deliver in getting these cards across to our members .<br /> <br /> “I implore you to do your best in delivering on this assignment so that our members can get their cards before the governorship primary on Sunday.”<br /> <br /> Balogun directed them to distribute the cards to identified party members immediately in the presence of their council chairmen and council party chairmen in their respective areas.<br /> <br /> He said the distribution must also be done in the presence of the state executive members representing each of the 20 constitutionally-recognised councils.<br /> <br /> The chairman said that the party arrived at the arrangement to ensure that cards do not fall into the wrong hands.<br /> <br /> Balogun warned that for no reason should the cards be given to the wrong people and urged the leaders to return unclaimed cards to the secretariat.<br /> <br /> He added: ”Please make sure you check the photographs on the cards before giving them out.<br /> <br /> “We do not want a situation where these cards get to the wrong hands. In case you cannot get the owners of some of the cards, please return them to the secretariat; we will know what to do.<br /> <br /> “And for some of you who cannot get all the cards because of bulkiness, please do come tomorrow, as that is the deadline for distribution.”

Additional details on the incident will be communicated later. ”<br /> <br /> The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar immediately set up a board of inquiry to investigate the accident, while President Muhammadu Buhari delegated the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, to visit the two surviving co-pilots of the crashed aircraft at the Defence Intelligence Agency Hospital, Abuja.<br /> <br /> Baba-Ari was laid to rest last night at the Military Cemetery, Airport Road Abuja.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Among those who attended the burial were Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonishakin.<br /> <br /> Others were Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Siddique Abubakar, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, hundreds of officers and men of the Nigerian Army, as well as friends and relatives of the deceased.<br /> <br /> Senior military officers and colleagues of the deceased could not control their emotions as they wept at the burial.<br /> <br /> Abubakar said yesterday’s rehearsal was supposed to be the last before the Monday event.<br /> <br /> He said: “I think that is the tragic nature of our job. As a combat pilot, sometimes terrible things happen and this is one of those days.<br /> <br /> “These officers have been rehearsing for the 58th independence anniversary of their country.<br /> <br /> “Everybody was full of enthusiasm, excited to be part of the celebration.Unfortunately, we had this incident this afternoon.<br /> <br /> “We have set up a board of enquiry to clearly understand what really happened. This was supposed to the last rehearsal before the actual flying on the 1st of October.<br /> <br /> “It is very unfortunate that we lost one of them, but we are also consoled by the fact that we have two of the pilots here who are in stable condition. They have been visited by the Chief of Staff and I have also visited them<br /> <br /> “This is something that has to do with the profession of flying combat aircraft and sometimes you can’t avoid these things from happening.”<br /> <br /> Commiserating with the survivors at the DIA Clinic, Abba Kyari conveyed Buhari’s grief over the accident.<br /> <br /> Wishing them a quick recovery,he said: “The President said we should come and see you and wish you well. Clash of interests in the APC led to the decision not to clear the minister whom they believe will win the ticket against their preferred candidates given whatever mode of primary that would be adopted by the party.”

As for the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Al-Hassan, he said she was disqualified because the party was not convinced about her loyalty.<br /> <br /> Oshiomhole said “As for the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, she has issues that have to do with party loyalty. Our constitution is clear and it dictates that to contest elections or even hold office in the APC, you must be loyal to the party in every material concern.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “From all she had said in the past and even her comments and general attitude during the screening, the NWC reviewed everything taken together and we arrived at the conclusion that she does not possess the level of loyalty that the APC requires for her to contest elections on our platform.<br /> <br /> “We made it clear when the defections happened that the APC may well benefit from these defections if it helps us to be more critical in terms of whom we give platform to contest elections and that there are core values that binds the APC together and they are non-negotiable.<br /> <br /> “The Electoral Act and the APC constitution forbid anyone from being a member of more than one political party at a time. That was not democracy. That was a demonstration of tyranny.<br /> <br /> “The victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was firmly established last week on Saturday the 22nd of September, 2018.<br /> <br /> “This so-called victory of the APC is not a democratic victory. Observers, both foreign and domestic, reported the brazen intimidation of voters and outright suppression of voting in the PDP strongholds with even the PDP agents physically prevented from being at the polling units.”<br /> <br /> <b>It is an embarrassment to Nigeria’s democracy –Saraki<br /></b><br /> On his part, Saraki said the supplementary election was a charade and an embarrassment to Nigeria’s democracy.<br /> <br /> In a statement on Friday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that the rerun was not needed in the first instance while the supplementary poll was unfair.<br /> <br /> The statement read, “Yesterday (Friday), we witnessed another display of the subversion of the will of the Osun people during the rerun gubernatorial election in the state. The election was characterised by widespread voter intimidation, violence and harassment. Accredited observers were denied access to polling units and duly registered voters were prevented from participating in the electoral process by thugs and compromised security agents.<br /> <br /> “Like I said a few days ago, this needless rerun election was only designed as an avenue for the ruling party to perpetrate electoral fraud. The nature of this election is an embarrassment to our democracy and casts an alarming pall on the institutions responsible for protecting the will of the Nigerian people as stated through their votes. That was why for more than 10 hours, INEC could not collate and announce results in just seven polling units with just over 2,000 votes.”<br /> <b><br /> PDP calls for Yakubu’s resignation<br /></b><br /> Meanwhile, the National Executive Committee of the PDP called for the resignation of the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.<br /> <br /> The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, stated this while briefing journalists after the NEC meeting on Thursday.<br /> <br /> The party accused the Yakubu-led INEC of connivance and manipulations of the electoral process in Thursday’s governorship rerun in Osun State.<br /> <br /> The PDP spokesman said, “NEC warned against allowing the current INEC leadership under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to continue in office as it has shown it cannot conduct a free, fair and credible election at any level.”<br /> <br /> <b>INEC declines comment<br /></b><br /> However, INEC refused to make any comment on the PDP allegations on Friday. Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, declined to speak on the matter.<br /> <br /> A top source in the commission, however, said, “This is the fifth or sixth time that the PDP would make such call for the chairman’s resignation and all is because of the elections that they have lost. In a democracy, when you are the loser, it is easy to make noise.”
