Popular Nigerian actor and filmmaker Mofe Duncan has urged men to treat women better, saying that real men do not hurt women. 
 
The actor, who expressed his opinion of how a woman should be treated by her man, took to his Instagram page @mofeduncan to share a photo of him and his new girlfriend. 
 
“A real man never hurts a woman. Be very careful when you make a woman cry because God counts her tear (drops). 
 
“The woman came out of a man’s rib, not from his feet to be walked on, and not from his head to be superior, but from his side to be equal.

“They should be under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved. 
 
“Why did the bible say, “husbands love your wives” and not the other way around? THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND? Men generally need to treat women better, period,” he wrote. 
 
According to him, his opinion will hopefully educate the men who do not know how to treat women and remind those who have forgotten just how women should be treated. 
 
Duncan is a popular talented Nollywood actor, model, and film producer known for his role in a movie “Dark Past” alongside Chika Ike. 
 
He began his career as a model at the tender age of five years when he modeled for Nestle and Maggi. 
 
The actor went fully into acting after undergoing series of auditions and was picked for a role in his first movie. 
 
His brilliant performance in his first movie earned him other roles in several movies, some of which are: ‘Dark Past’, ‘Just One Blood’, ‘Finding Love’, ‘Body of Evidence’, ‘Lies Men Tell’, ‘Sobis Mystic’, ‘Rough Patches’, ‘Swim’, and ‘My Angel’, among others. 
 
Duncan’s co-associates in the movie industry have the cast of top Nollywood celebrities such as Chika Ike, Timini Egbuson, Bimboye Ademoye, and Bisola Aiyeola.

On December 4th, 2004, reigning Nigerian rapper at that time, Eedris Abdulkareem got tired of the way Nigerian artistes were being treated whenever their international counterparts were being invited to the country. 
 
Abdulkareem decided to do something about it. 
 
After performing in 2 out of 4 shows, 50 Cent and his crew were headed to Port Harcourt aboard an ADC flight. On the flight Eedris Abdulkareem tried to sit on a seat reserved for 50 Cent. The Nigerian rapper was stopped by 50 Cent’s bodyguards. Eedris was not having any of that and this led to a brawl in the plane. 
 
As a result of the commotion, 50 Cent decided not to perform at the remaining two shows and left Nigeria. Even though this incident was one of the many reasons that led to the waning of Eedris’ career, it was also a spur for Nigerian artistes being treated better. 
 
In a recent Instagram live chat with Samklef, he narrated what actually transpired, stating that Charley Boy betrayed him.

“Charley Boy went to meet Nigerian Breweries, he told them that ‘Una know say una don dey mess up tey tey’. Charly Boy collected money from Nigerian Breweries to blacklist me with the media. The next day they said Eedris Abdulkareem slapped 50 cent. 
 
“Don’t blame the Nigerian media, they are hungry people. People were begging Nigerian Breweries to be on that show for N50,000, for N200,000. I am the first artiste that started charging N3m per show. I stood my ground because everything wasn’t about the money. It was about the future of Africa and the future of Nigerian music. When we met years later, 50cent  told one of his guys that if he was in my shoes, he would have done the same thing. I don’t listen to any stupid Nigerian youth”, he said. 
 
In 2007,  Eedris Abdulkareem  apologized to 50 Cent on stage at the KORA Awards in Abuja.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned infant foods producing companies from using the coronavirus pandemic as a means to promote their brands. 
 
It gave this directive in a statement on, “COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and guidance note to companies that donate or market breastmilk substitutes for infants.” 
 
NAFDAC stated that pursuant to provisions of the NAFDAC Act, CAP N1 LFN 2004 and the Marketing (Breast-Milk Substitutes) ACT CAP M.5 LFN 2004 and the BMS regulations, in keeping with the WHO International Code of BMS, wished to provide clarifications regarding donations of BMS in the context of lockdown and financial barriers occasioned by the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 
It stated, “Companies that market foods for infants and young children (breastmilk substitutes) should not provide free products, samples or reduced-price foods for infants (below six months old) to families through health workers or health facilities, except as supplies distributed through government or officially sanctioned health programmes.

“The WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes requires that products distributed in such programmes should not display company brands. 
 
“In this specific instance, the unbranded packaging is to focus on the need to support the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, where necessary in terms of infant and young child feeding, rather than use the pandemic as a platform for brand promotion.” 
 
The agency advised all infant food manufacturers/distributors and non-governmental organisations wishing to make foods for infants and young children (BMS) available for distribution, through officially sanctioned health programmes, to adhere to the clarification provided and approach NAFDAC for the necessary guidance. 
 
It noted that the importance of infant and young child feeding and the continued protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic could not be over-emphasised. 
 
NAFDAC stated, “Breastmilk is the best food for the newborn child as it protects them from sicknesses, it also helps to protect infants and young children. 
 
“Breastfeeding is especially effective against infectious diseases as it boosts the child’s immunity by directly transferring antibodies from the mother to the child.”

The Federal Government says there are pharmaceutical processes and standards that must be observed before endorsing any proposed herbal or homegrown drug for use by coronavirus patients in the country. 
 
The Minister of State for Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, made this known on Friday during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja. 
 
He said the health ministry would soon meet with scientists, researchers, and traditional medicine specialists in the country who have registered that they have one drug or the other for the treatment of the lethal virus. 
 
He noted that the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control would test such drugs to ascertain whether they are fit for human consumption or not, adding that the drugs would undergo clinical trials that require a few COVID-19 patients to willingly accept to use them.

Responding in Yoruba Language to a question asked by a reporter from an indigenous TV station, the minister said, “We are still on it. We are still collecting interests and research findings from those who have said they have herbal drugs for the treatment of coronavirus. 
 
“A lot has been said on herbs and some other concoction prepared for the treatment of the disease but we can’t start administering it on patients as there are laid-down guidelines on the testing and approval of drugs before they are dispensed to patients. 
 
“The first step is that NAFDAC must check the effectiveness of the drugs and examine if they are fit for human consumption. 
 
“After NAFDAC certifies the drugs as okay for consumption, we will then hand it over to doctors and clinicians. But even before it gets to this stage, there must be volunteers for clinical trials. We have to test it on volunteers who will put it in writing that they accept to use it. 
 
“After the clinical trials, we will observe these volunteers for reduced symptoms. We will record this and also examine the side effect of the drugs. We must observe all these processes, so it is not a quick one. We will hold a meeting with the people who have said they have one drug or the other for the treatment of COVID-19.” 
 
Also, the Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, encouraged scientists in the country to come up with home-based drugs for the treatment of the infection. 
 
“There is no single cure to COVID-19 that I know of from all the literatures. Everybody is trying his hands on one thing or the other, even bigger economies with established medical infrastructure. Today it is Hydroxychloroquine, tomorrow it is another thing. And after a while, you hear those treatment prescribed being discredited. 
 
“We are looking at all the options and suggestions. We are looking at what is happening in Senegal, Madagascar and we are also looking internally and urging our scientists and researchers to come up with solutions and go through revalidation processes, who knows, a cure can emerge from our country. 
 
“We will continue to push the agenda for a local solution but if help comes from outside, we will receive it,” the SGF said.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Friday, for the second time, ordered the extension of the lockdown by one week. 
 
He said the relaxation on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, would remain. 
 
Abiodun announced the extension while addressing journalists at the Governor’s Office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State. 
 
He said, “You, the entire people of Ogun State, have not elected me to make easy decisions. And tough decisions, we have to make.

“Now, to preserve the lives of our people, we are persuaded to extend the current modified lockdown, which has been slightly eased, for another one week alongside the current guidelines. This will be reviewed, as usual, on a weekly basis.” 
 
Abiodun however, threatened to deal decisively with those smuggling people in and outside of the state in disregard of the interstate border closure. 
 
The governor added, “Reports reaching us have shown that many of our people are showing utter disregard for the precautionary guidelines, international best practices and safety measures rolled out, especially, during the window of relaxation of the lockdown. We have heard and seen the havoc that COVID-19 continues to wreak on other lands. Let us learn from these experiences. 
 
“Let me state unequivocally that we will not tolerate any further breach on the ban of inter-state travel. Anybody found culpable will be treated for committing a crime against Ogun State and visited with the full weight of the law.”

Enugu State Government on Saturday confirmed another positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state, the Commissioner for Health, Prof Ikechukwu Obi announces. 
 
Obi said in a statement in Enugu that the case happened to be another contact of the third case reported in the state capital who had positive travel history from outside the state. 
 
This brings the total number of cases ever reported in Enugu to 10 with eight active cases. 
 
The commissioner said the patient had also been admitted for isolation and treatment.

He appealed to the residents to stay at home and only go out when absolutely necessary. 
 
According to him, if you must go out, wear a mask, practice physical/social distancing, exercise proper respiratory hygiene. 
 
“Wash your hands as often as possible with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when there is no facility to wash your hands 
 
“Sanitize surfaces all around you as often as possible with a 1in6 mixture of bleach and water

The Lagos state government has predicted that the confirmed coronavirus cases in the state may rise to 120,000 by July 2020.

According to him, the sharp rise in cases being recorded to the decentralisation of sample collection across the 20 local government areas of the state. 
 
He added that if government had not been proactive, the state would have, by now, recorded 6,000 cases rather than the 1,491 cases recorded so far. 
 
Abayomi disclosed that Alimosho, Oshodi and Isolo have begun to record high rate of COVID-19 cases. 
 
He, however, noted that 97% of positive cases at its isolation centers were mild and moderate cases, while only three percent were severe cases. 
 
The Commissioner also disclosed that the state government is to begin hydroxychloroquine trials in the next one week.

The plunge in nonfarm payroll employment last month was the largest ever recorded dating back to 1939, while the jobless rate saw its highest and biggest increase dating back to 1948, the report said. 
 
And job losses in March were worse than initially reported, falling 870,000 even though the business closures happened mostly in the second half of the month. 
 
Employment fell sharply in all major industry sectors. Leisure and hospitality was the first sector hit and the one bearing the brunt of the impact of the lockdowns, and posted a loss of 7.7 million jobs. 
 
However, the Labor Department noted that some workers were misclassified in the report as employed when they should have been counted as laid off. Had they been listed properly, the unemployment rate would have been nearly five percentage points higher.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has denied the allegations the Interim Management Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission misappropriated N40 Billion. 
 
The Senate on Tuesday set up an ad hoc committee headed by Senator Olubunmi Adetunbi to investigate the financial transactions carried out by the IMC on behalf of the commission in the last three months.

But Akpabio, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Anietie Ekong, on Friday, dismissed the allegations, saying the current administration of the NDDC had not awarded any contracts. 
 
The statement said, “The attention of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has been drawn to sensational headlines about an alleged N40bn corruption in the NDDC. We wish to state categorically that under the supervision of Akpabio there has been no corruption in the NDDC. 
 
“It is obvious that there have been an upsurge in attacks on the commission, the IMC and the minister through spurious and unsubstantiated allegations since the commencement of forensic audit of the commission. Unfortunately, these phantom allegations have found their way into the hallowed chamber of the National Assembly. 
 
“In response to the campaign of calumny, the commission had explained that the IMC has only approved the total payment of N18bn for contractual claims.” 
 
According to Ekong, payments to contractors are all payments for contracts awarded by previous administrations, especially the payment for contracts below N50m. 
 
He added, “The present management has not awarded any single contract. So where is the bogey N40bn coming from? It is instructive that the commission under the supervision of Akpabio has devised a strategy by which only duly verified and inspected contracts with photo and video evidence are recommended and approved for payment. 
 
“The IMC has been very prudent in managing the affairs of the interventionist agency. The interest of Akpabio has been to ensure that the NDDC completes its headquarters building started since the days of the defunct Oil Minerals Producing Areas Development Commission, the contract of which was awarded with the approval of the Federal Executive Council many years before Akpabio became the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. 
 
“Following the recent presidential approval, the NDDC is also providing intervention support to complement the efforts of federal and state governments against further spread of COVID-19 in the nine Niger Delta states.”

As Nigerians stranded in different foreign countries arrive in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government will keep their passports and places them under surveillance for one week.

This is contained in the guidelines for the repatriation of Nigerians issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the nation’s missions and embassies abroad. 
 
The document dated May 1, 2020, was signed by the acting Director, European Affairs Division, Mr George Edokpa. 
 
The first batch of 264 returnees from Dubai, UAE, landed in Lagos on Wednesday and the returnees were immediately quarantined and their passports temporarily seized. 
 
It guidelines read, “The returnees must be in recommended apparel, long sleeve tops and full-length trousers or ankle-length skirts for females and long-sleeve shirts and full-length trousers for males. 
 
“Returnees must ensure they keep their face masks in place for the duration of the flight except during meals after which they must put the face mask back on. Returnees are expected to fill the self-reporting/health assessment forms while onboard.” 
 
On arrival, the guidelines stated that the passengers’ international passports would be collected for special Nigeria Immigration Service clearance during the period of quarantine after which they would be required by the service to present themselves for necessary clearance. 
 
“Returnees are to be tested during the period of quarantine and on the 14th day of the quarantine, a positive test would necessitate their transfer to an isolation/treatment facility. 
 
“At the end of the quarantine period, evacuees can go home but they will be followed by the surveillance team for another seven days.” 
 
An official explained that the returning Nigerians were not tested for coronavirus ahead of their repatriation because they could be re-infected during the flight. 
 
The MFA spokesman, Ferdinand Nwonye, could not be reached for comment on Friday. He had yet to respond to calls and an SMS as of the time of filing this report. 
 
The MFA spokesman confirmed that those returning from the US were not tested for COVID-19. 
 
“The Consulate-General in New York told me those coming from the US were not tested because the guidelines he received said their temperature should only be taken,” he stated. 
 
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has apologised to Nigerians that returned from the United Kingdom for spending three hours in a plane at the Lagos airport on Friday. 
 
He said the delay was caused by the refusal of the British Airways crew to fly them to Abuja because the British nationals they were billed to fly back to Heathrow Airport were in Lagos. 
 
About 255 Nigerians, who were flown into Lagos from London on account of the COVID-19, were reportedly kept inside the plane for a long time, leading to protests by the evacuees. 
 
Commenting on the incident on Friday during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the minister said, “The challenge we had with the flight is that we had wanted it to come directly to Abuja because that is where the passengers are supposed to be quarantined, but the British (Airways) insisted that the people they wanted to take back to the UK were in Lagos and for them to fly down to Abuja would exceed the balance for the pilot and so this put us in a very awkward position. This (evacuation) involved a lot of coordination; unfortunately, we didn’t get it right. 
 
“This is a most regrettable situation and we apologise wholeheartedly to those passengers. The latest report I heard from Lagos is that they eventually came to Abuja where they would now be quarantined. 
 
Responding to a question about Nigerians stranded in France, the minister affirmed that they could fly to Cotonou, Benin Republic and return home through the land borders.

Five of the 10 deaths were recorded from Kano, which takes its overall deaths to 18. 
 
Lagos, with 33 deaths has the highest number of fatality, while Borno has 14 deaths. 
 
Sokoto recorded one death on Friday to take its total to nine, while Katsina has recorded eight deaths so far from the pandemic. 
 
The Federal Capital Territory, Edo, Ogun and Osun have four Coronavirus deaths each, while Zamfara and Delta have three death cases each. 
 
Others are: Kaduna, Oyo, Rivers and Akwa Ibom, two deaths each; while Bauchi, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Yobe and Ekiti have recorded one death each. 
 
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also reported that the nation recorded 386 new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Friday as the total cases confirmed rose to 3912.

The Supreme Court, on Friday, quashed the judgement that convicted and sentenced the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor-Kalu, to 12 years imprisonment. 
 
The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-man panel of Justices led by Justice Amina Augie, held that the Federal High Court in Lagos acted without jurisdiction when it convicted Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu. 
 
It held that trial Justice Mohammed Liman was no longer a judge of the Federal High Court as at the time he sat and delivered the judgement that convicted the defendants for allegedly stealing about N7.1billion from Abia state treasury. 
 
According to the Supreme Court, Justice Liman, having been elevated to the Court of Appeal before then, lacked the powers to return to sit as a High Court Judge.

It held that the Fiat that was issued to him by the Court of Appeal President pursuant to section 396(7) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act was unconstitutional. 
 
Consequently, the apex court vacated the judgement that convicted the defendants and ordered a fresh trial of the defendants.

A 22-year-old pregnant woman, Mrs Veronica Boniface, has allegedly stabbed her husband, Mohammed,  to death over suspicion that he was making a phone call to his girlfriend. 
 
The Commandant of the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr Mahmud Fari, said in Lafia that the woman was arrested in the Obene area of the Keana Local Government Area of the state following an intelligence report. 
 
According to him, medical examination conducted on the suspect indicated that she is in good condition. 
 
Fari said as soon as the command completes its findings, the suspect would be prosecuted in a competent court in the state.

He stated, “The husband was rushed to hospital after she stabbed him with a knife after they quarrelled over a phone call that she suspected was with a lady. 
 
“We found out that she has a two-and-a-half-year-old baby, who is now in the custody of the relations of the husband.” 
 
Veronica, who was detained on Tuesday, said she was two months pregnant for her late husband. 
 
The suspect blamed the devil for her action, adding that her plan was to scare Mohammed to enable her take the phone from him.

South Korean football will reach new international TV audiences as it leads the way by restarting after the coronavirus on Friday, but there will be no crowds or wild goal celebrations – and even talking is discouraged. 
 
With most leagues worldwide sidelined by the pandemic, the K-League is the first competition of any standing to come back to life, watched by sport-starved fans in a swathe of foreign countries. 
 
It will provide the first glimpse of post-virus football, with teams under orders to stick to stringent safety guidelines to prevent any contagion. 
 
Players have been told to avoid excessive goal celebrations, handshakes, close talking and blowing their noses, while the stadiums will be devoid of spectators.

But with fans around the world long deprived of live sport, the K-League has signed rights deals with broadcasters in nearly 20 countries including Germany, Switzerland and Australia who will be showing games live. 
 
The K-League, whose start was delayed two months by the pandemic, will also be live-streamed on YouTube and Twitter with English graphics and commentary. 
 
Last year’s rights were sold to only six countries, all of them in Asia. 
 
“Because we had limited exposure to international fans, it is true that the K-League was largely unknown globally despite its competitiveness,” said league spokesman Lee Jong-kwoun. 
 
“2020 will be the first year the league will be recognised and assessed on a global level.” 
 
Defending champions Jeonbuk Motors — managed by Jose Mourinho’s former assistant Jose Morais – face Cup-holders Suwon Bluewings in the season-opener in Jeonju, a host city for the 2002 World Cup. 
 
The K-League’s progress will be watched closely by other leagues including the giants of Europe, where Germany’s Bundesliga is the only competition so far to set a date to return, on May 16. 
 
Players and coaching staff will have their temperatures checked before each game and anyone at 37.5 C (99.5 F) or more will be isolated and tested. 
 
If anyone gets infected during the season, their team and those who played against them will have to take a two-week break. 
 
And instead of the traditional pre-game handshakes, players have been asked to bow their heads from a distance. 
 
South Korea endured one of the worst early outbreaks of COVID-19 outside China, prompting professional sports to suspend or delay their seasons, a pattern that was repeated worldwide. 
 
But the country appears to have flattened the curve thanks to an extensive “trace, test and treat” programme, and football’s return comes after baseball started this week, also without fans. 
 
Life in South Korea has returned largely to normal, with workers going back to offices this week under eased social distancing rules, while a stay-on-base order on its 600,000 strong military was lifted, allowing conscripts to go on leave. 
 
Schools will start re-opening next week. 
 
Authorities reported 12 fresh coronavirus cases Friday, taking the total to 10,822. 
 
The K-League said spectators will be allowed back into stadiums progressively as the government eases its distancing measures. 
 
The new football season comes just three days after the return of professional baseball in South Korea, which has struck a television deal with ESPN for US fans.

A coalition of Nollywood associations have registered their discomfort over their non-inclusion in the Federal Government‘s initiative to mitigate effects COVID-19 on the creative industry. 
 
In the statement obtained by TheNewsGuru and signed by Presidents of Nollywood guilds like  Emeka Rollas, Mr Latin, Fred Amata and others, they urged the Federal Government to include the  Presidents of these associations, in their purported plan to alleviate the effects of COVID-19 on the  Nigerian creative industry. 
 
Read the statement below: 
 
“Our attention has been drawn to a purported creative industry committee reportedly set up by the Federal Government to advise it on how to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the creative industry as reported in the press on the 6th of May 2020. We first wish to commend the government for having such initiative and intentions for the creative industry. It is a welcome and thoughtful approach to positive intervention and in alignment with other progressive governments the world over, who having appreciated the impact of the pandemic on their creative sectors, developed palliative programs as a support net.

However, in those other climes there are processes and approaches indicative of a transparent and equitable desire to ensure that the needs and requirements of the target sectors are achieved! It is an incontrovertible fact that, the Nigerian creative industry with over 20 guilds, employs about 2.5million Nigerian youths; and is recognised globally as the fastest growing creative industry. With the second largest movie production industry in the world, it is an industry worth over US$2Billion with a contribution of 2.3% to the nation’s GDP. 
 
It is also a known fact that these 2.5M Nigerians belong to associations and organisations generally referred to as guilds, whom they have willingly through legitimate elections handed over the incumbency of their mandates; saying in essence speak and act on our behalf on matters affecting our interests, welfare and wellbeing! It is then inherent and indeed compelling that any discussion concerning the welfare of the industry should as a matter of equity and transparency involve the participation of those guild heads. 
 
 Presently, Nigeria is involved in the process of financial discussions with international finance bodies. No matter how rich or influential the most successful industrialist or the most successful banker maybe, or how connected with those financial organisations, they cannot lead the sovereign government delegation to those talks. 
 
In the same manner the citizens of Nigeria would hold the federal government responsible so do the 2.5m workers of the Nigerian creative sector hold the guilds and their leaders responsible! In as much as the ministry may in its wisdom nominate individuals from the industry as additional resource persons based on their experiences and reach , there is the clear and present danger that the government will miss its mark when it does not appreciate and incorporate the workings of a sub- sector of the economy when the leadership of that sector are not consulted prior to major decisions affecting the sector. 
 
Nollywood is one of the priority sectors identified by the government for its Economic Recovery and Growth Plans with a projected US$1Billion export revenue in 2020. This is the more reason why the government must involve the leadership of the industry on critical issues affecting the industry rather than only hand-picking a few practitioners no matter how prominent they may be. We have always believed that where there is a will, there is always a way. In that vein we therefore urge the ministry to henceforth incorporate guild heads whenever it proposes rigorous engagements with the creative industry both now and in the future. If really the government is serious about this noble initiative; we then respectfully call on the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to reconstitute the committee to reflect the actual representatives of the industry. If guilds like the Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Medical Association among others are engaged as strategic stakeholders by the government through their recognised association’s leadership then the creative industry deserves the same regard. 
 
We hold this truth to be self-evident that the Nollywood sector of our creative enterprise and industry has structured leadership founded and anchored on their Guilds and Associations and we urge the Honourable Minister of Information or any other representative of the federal government, its parastatals and agencies planning any intended dealings with Nollywood to kindly but officially do so through the Guilds and Associations.

The Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi has refuted reports claiming he tested positive for coronavirus. 
 
Abayomi urged Lagosians to disregard the reports which he described as fake and misleading. 
 
In a series of tweets, the Commissioner said the reports were circulated to create panic and unnecessary anxiety among people of the State. 
 
He tweeted: “#COVID19Lagos News AlertSpeaker with three sound waves.

“I hereby implore the general public to disregard the fake and misleading news circulating in the media to the effect that I have tested positive to #COVID19 infection. 
 
“It is evident that the fake news is calculated at causing panic and unnecessary anxiety amongst the populace. 
 
“I therefore urge the public to disregard any news on #COVID19 that does not emanate from @followslasg official communication channels and other verifiable sources. 
 
“Remain vigilant and continue to play your part as responsible citizens in curtailing the spread of #COVID19 in our communities.”

The Presidency has explained why the Federal Government had not been dishing out funds to state governments. 
 
It faulted the action of some governors it accused of prioritising the quest for money over the need to overcome the disease in the state. 
 
Speaking on a radio programme monitored in Kano, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said: “The Federal Government assisted Lagos State with N10 billion for its commitment and only because it was satisfied that the government of Lagos started on the right footing, rolling out proper plans and mobilising its fund to fight the pandemic.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Haruna, has said the state is under pressure to declare that it has COVID-19 cases where there is none.

The commissioner made the claims in a statement on Thursday. 
 
He, however, said the state would not succumb to the pressure. 
 
The statement followed a report, which claimed that four persons suspected to be COVID-19 patients had died at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja in the last one week. 
 
He said that as the state commissioner for health, a member of the Governing Board of the FMC Lokoja, and also the incident manager for COVID-19 in the state, he had yet to be informed of any claimed cases. 
 
“There is also a representative of the FMC Lokoja in the state’s squadron against COVID-19 /Lassa fever and never for once was any such case raised in our meetings. 
 
The commissioner alleged that the aim of those putting pressure on the state was to politicise the situation as they are not happy that the current administration has been scored high by local and international observers on health care. 
 
He added, “First and foremost, it is imperative that the public realise that there is no state government that can deliberately put her people in harm’s way for whatever political reason and the current administration has been scored high by local and international observers on health. We have and will continue to put the health of our people as first priority. 
 
“We have been in an annual fight against Lassa fever as the state is located in the Lassa fever belt, recording several cases with regrettable loses. We were first to establish a Biosafety Laboratory for Lassa fever in Nigeria and this year alone we have confirmed 30 cases of Lassa fever that was duly announced. To accuse the state of a cover-up of COVID-19 cases is mischievous and at best politically inclined.”

 The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Thursday indicated that Nigeria was making headway in getting local cures for COVID-19. 
 
The PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, gave this indication at the task force press conference in Abuja. 
 
He said the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department of the Federal Ministry of Health had forwarded some of the claims for COVID-19 cure to the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control.

According to the SGF, some of the claims for COVID-19 cures have met preliminary requirements, but the NAFDAC will evaluate them for listing. 
 
Also on Thursday, NAFDAC met with alternative medical practitioners and researchers on the listing of herbal medicines for COVID-19 treatment. 
 
According to the agenda of the meeting, issues such as COVID-19 and herbal medicines as well as NAFDAC food and chemical laboratory testing were discussed. 
 
There were indications also Thursday that the Federal Ministry of Health had directed NAFDAC to carry out necessary procedures for the assessment of a plant-based cough mixture to treat COVID-19 patients. 
 
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mashi Abdullahi, issued the directive in a memo with reference TCAM/077/I/65, addressed to the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. 
 
The document, dated April 28, 2020, was titled, ‘Formulation of a Phyto-Medicine-Based Cough Mixture/Syrup for the Management of COVID-19 Patients by Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine Department of the Ministry.’ 
 
The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, on Wednesday said the local medicines in Nigeria had not been tested and could be poisonous. 
 FG directs NAFDAC to evaluate local COVID-19 cures 
 
On Thursday, the task force Chairman, Mustapha, said the PTF would continue to support efforts to invent a local cure for coronavirus, adding that the ministry of health had started evaluating some claims. 
 
He stated, “For some time now, there have been claims of inventions and cures related to COVID-19. The PTF, as part of its mandate, remains supportive of and receptive to outcomes of research. It, however, finds it imperative to re-iterate its position on the need for such discoveries to undergo the scientific validation processes. 
 
“The PTF is aware that the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department of the Federal Ministry of Health has been evaluating such claims and forwarded some that have met the preliminary requirements to the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control to carry out the necessary procedures for listing.” 
 
Also, the ministry of health in its letter to the NAFDAC DG noted there was no definite treatment or vaccine for COVID-19. 
 
It stated, “This has necessitated countries to look for solutions from within and Nigeria is no exception. It is worthy to note that Nigeria is blessed with medicinal plants which could be exploited. 
 
“It is heartwarming to note that the Department of the TCAM has taken the pains to research into scientific materials to come up with a formulation intended for the management of cough in COVID-19 and other cough-related infections.” 
 
According to the ministry, the formulation is a Cov-herbal cough mixture. 
 
It said, “Interestingly, all the ingredients that make up the formulations are medicinal plants that are widely used as food materials and medicines. 
 
“They include Allium sativa (garlic); Allium cepa (onions); Zingiber officinale (ginger): Piper guineense (West African Black Pepper); and Adansonia digitata (baobab fruit). The innovation here is the composition of the formulation. 
 
“These medicinal plants have documented scientific evidences of long use for the management of cough and other respiratory infections, with medicinal properties of mucoiytic, antitussive, expectorant, soothing, demulcent, anti- inflammatory and antiviral effects.” 
 
The ministry stated that it was determined to “walk the talk” in the promotion and integration of herbal medicine into the health care delivery system. 
 
“In view of the foregoing and the desire of the ministry to showcase to the public a product that is 100 per cent sourced locally, you are requested to carry out the necessary procedures for listing.” 
 
In a chat with newsmn on Thursday, NAFDAC Director of Public Affairs, Dr Abubakar Jimoh, explained herbal drugs were listed after it had been confirmed that they were not toxic. 
 
He, however, said that such listed drugs were not usually given full registration. 
 
In a related development, the leadership of NAFDAC met with 35 players in the herbal and alternative medicine sector as part of efforts to find a treatment to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 
The virtual meeting, which was convened by the Director General of NAFDAC, had in attendance over 35 players in the herbal medicine sector including two professors of Pharmacognosis, Maurice Iwu and Anthony Elujoba, who was once an acting Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. 
 
Some others at the meeting were Prof. Martins Emeje of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development; the Managing Director, Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc, Matthew Azoji; and Prof. McDonald Edu of the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Benin. 
 
Others are Executive Director, Yemkem International Group, Mr Akinyemi Ayeni; and Dr. Oluwatobi Abiola, Managing Director of Ablat Nigeria Limited, manufacturers of Yoyo Bitters. 
 
The meeting also had in attendance representatives of the Ministry of Trade and Investment as well as the Department of Traditional and Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the Ministry of Health. 
 
The meeting was the third edition of the Nigerian Herbal Medicine Product Committee symposium which seeks to explore herbal solutions to health challenges in the country 
 
However, the NAFDAC DG said only one firm had so far approached the agency for approval and it was for the treatment of the symptoms of COVID-19, not the virus itself. 
 
Adeyeye said all claims must go through necessary testing before clinical trials can commence.

About 300 Nigerians stranded in the United Kingdom will be brought home in a charter flight on Friday (today). 
 
The evacuees will on arrival in Abuja undergo the mandatory 14-day supervised quarantine and tests for COVID-19. They are part of 4,000 Nigerians being evacuated from foreign countries. 
 
The first batch of returnees from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, landed in Lagos on Wednesday.

Speaking during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said the returnees would be isolated in hotels in the Federal Capital Territory. 
 
He stated, “We are hoping to have another flight tomorrow (today) coming from the UK. This flight would be coming to Abuja, but they would be landing in Lagos first and then fly to Abuja. 
 
“The reasons are these: We have been mindful of the cost to the passengers flying home. We have tried as much as possible to minimise the costs, appreciating that a lot of them stayed out much longer than they would have needed or wanted to.” 
 
He acknowledged that most of the returning citizens preferred isolation in Lagos, but pleaded for understanding, promising to make arrangements for their return to Lagos after their discharge from quarantine. 
 
“We would make arrangements to facilitate the return to Lagos of those who need to be in Lagos rather than Abuja, but the passengers really have to bear with us. Two or three days later, we would have another flight coming into Abuja,” the minister said. 
 
Onyeama explained that the Nigerian High Commission in India was in the process of negotiating with selected airlines to evacuate stranded Nigerians in that country.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has disclosed that one of the two cases that absconded before they could be treated for coronavirus is a 10-year-old boy. 
 
According to him, the boy and one other escaped before being admitted to the isolation centre. 
 
“We also have a further update on the two absconded cases reported earlier today. They absconded before being admitted to any of our isolation centres.

“After intensive contact tracing, one of them has been found and admitted to the Infectious Diseases Centre, Olodo, Ibadan. 
 
“The other is a 10-year-old boy who, eyewitnesses claimed, boarded a north-bound vehicle. His details had been sent to the Sokoto State PHEOC. Contact tracing is still ongoing.” 
 
Meanwhile, the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force has confirmed eight new COVID-19 positive cases in the state. This brings the number of positive cases in the state to 52. 
 
Makinde made the disclosure via his verified Twitter handle in the early hours of Thursday. He also said two COVID-19 cases undergoing treatment in the state facility had been discharged after their confirmatory tests came back negative. 
 
The governor wrote, “The COVID-19 confirmation tests of eight new cases just came back positive from the laboratory, tonight. This increases the number of confirmed cases in Oyo State to 52. 
 
“Two confirmed COVID-19 patients were discharged from the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo after receiving their second negative test results. This brings the number of discharged cases in Oyo State to 13. 
 
The governor urged members of the public to call the Emergency Operations Centre on any of the designated telephone numbers, if they found travellers from other states arriving in their communities.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday restrained the Federal Government from taking fresh steps to extradite the former Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu, to the United States of America on allegation of complicity in illicit drug deal. 
 
Justice Okon Abang, in a judgment, held that no fresh application for Kashamu’s extradition could be initiated when previous judgments of the Federal High Court in Abuja and Lagos prohibiting the extradition moves had not been set aside by superior courts.

The judge noted that while the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation successfully obtained a judgment of the Court of Appeal, Lagos, delivered on May 4, 2018, dismissing the restraining order in suit marked 508/2015, the AGF failed to appeal the other judgment in the suit marked 49/2010. 
 
“The fact that the restraining order in the judgment in suit 49/2010 dated January 6, 2014 is still valid and subsisting, it is not a matter of sentiment,” the judge ruled. 
 
He added, “To appeal the judgment is the lawful step to take. To take any other steps against the judgment order than appealing is unlawful, and an exercise of executive lawlessness. 
 
“It is my hope that the AGF, an office created by the Constitution, the Chief Law Officer of the federation, who is also the chief minister in the temple of justice, the conscience of the society, should toe the path of the law and should not violate the laws of the land.” 
 
The immediate past Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke, had filed an extradition application in the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 28, 2015 upon a request by the United States of America asking the Nigerian government to surrender Kashamu to face trial on one count of illicit drugs pending against him before the United States District Court for the Northern Illinois, Eastern Division. 
 
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Abang, who presided over the fresh suit, ruled that as much as a January 6, 2014 judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos remained subsisting and had not been set aside, no fresh extradition application could me made against the former senator.

The Senior Pastor of the Covenant Christian Centre, Lagos, Pastor ‘Poju Oyemade, has said shutting church buildings does not affect the true worship of God. 
 
According to Oyemade, Christians do not need to gather in a physical building to serve God, adding that in Biblical days, people received divine healing in public places.

The decision of government not to open religious places of worship due to the COVID-19 pandemic had been criticised by some prominent pastors, including Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy and Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith International. 
 
Oyakhilome had criticized church leaders who agreed to shut churches without consulting with fellow pastors, while Oyedepo said opening markets and shutting churches was wrong and people were prevented from receiving their healing. 
 
But Oyemade said God could not be restricted to physical buildings. 
 
He said, “Closing the doors of a physical building does not in any way mean the closure of the anointing of the Spirit from working. The sick we see healed in the Book of Acts were healed on the streets, in people’s homes, in public places and not within the four walls of a church. Church buildings may be shut down, but true faith and the anointing of the Spirit has not stopped working. 
 
“There is a difference between expression of emotions and the manifestation of the anointing to heal the sick. There is nowhere in Jesus’ ministry where the healing of the sick was preceded by a congregational service. 
 
“In the Book of Acts, the sick were healed predominantly on the streets with no fanciful service going on. Closure of a church building does not stop the rivers of living water from flowing out of your belly. 
 
“Charles Finney began a massive revival by people praying in their homes all keeping watches at the same time. They all chose the exact time to pray and they did in their homes until the Spirit broke out on the streets. 
 
“They did not criticise any other church or ministry of weakness. Criticising others doesn’t attest to the fact that you have strength. They only stayed with God until something broke out on the streets.”

<div class="MsoNormal">The NCDC said in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, face masks are advised to be used as an additional layer of physical distancing to help block the spread of respiratory droplets from person to person.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">Owing to the shortage of medical face masks, many people have had to turn to cloth face masks as an alternative.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">The agency said cloth face mask can only act as a barrier to respiratory droplets but ”cannot completely protect you from COVID-19”.</div>

The Ag. Chief Judge of Cross River, Justice Maurice Eneji, has released 30 inmates from the state’s Correctional Service Centre in Afokang, as part of measures to decongest the facility. 
 
The development is also to curb the spread of the global Coronavirus pandemic. 
 
While carrying out the exercise in Calabar, Eneji said that the release was in line with the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, and Gov. Ben Ayade to further curb the spread of the ravaging  disease. 
 
 “The jail delivery exercise was to decongest the correctional centres in accordance with  the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice, Tanko Muhammad and Gov. Ben Ayade, in view of the fact that the facilities in the state were congested.

“Some of the inmates released were those charged with minor offences such as theft, trespass, mischief, while some were set free on health grounds. 
 
“Others who have spent beyond their prescribed period of jail terms for offences committed also benefitted from the exercise of decongesting the Correctional Centre,” he said. 
 
The Acting Chief Justice also used the opportunity to commend the Director of Public Prosecution, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), National Human Rights Commission and Learned Counsel, for their efforts in the exercise.

A former Commissioner in Kano State, Muaz Magaji, fired by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for celebrating the death of Abba Kyari has tested positive for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). 
 
Muaz Magaji made this known using his Facebook profile on Thursday, saying the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) released the result this morning. 
 
“This morning my NCDC test is out…I have been confirmed Covid-19 positive…And have been moved to one of the state facilities…pray for us!,” the former commissioner wrote. 
 
Recall that Kyari, 67, a former chief of staff to President Muhammad Buhari, died last month from complications of COVID-19.

However, Muaz Magaji took to his Facebook page to express delight over the passing of late Kyari, declaring that “Nigeria is free”. 
 
But hours after making the comments, Governor Ganduje relieved Muaz Magaji of his position as the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.

Of the 103 people who died of Coronavirus, 30 of them were from Lagos, while Borno recorded 14 deaths.

According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Nigeria now has 3,145 confirmed cases of Coronavirus. 
 
Of the 195 new cases released, Lagos leads the pack with 82 new infections of the deadly disease, while Kano followed with 30 new cases.

The NCDC said the country has discharged 534 coronavirus patients so far and recorded 103 deaths.

Two COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in Oyo State as well as one each in Niger and Bauchi states have fled from isolation centres. 
 
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said the two people who ran away in the state tested positive to the deadly virus. 
 
He said 975 samples had been collected for test.

The governor said the two fleeing patients brought the number of active cases in the state to 31 instead of 33. 
 
Makinde announced the escape of the patients while giving an update on the state’s COVID-19 figures in a series of tweets on his Twitter handle. 
 
The tweet reads: “We have received more results from pending COVID-19 confirmation tests. The result of one suspected case came back positive on May 03, 2020. The person is based in Ibadan. 
 
“The results of five suspected cases came back positive on May 04, 2020. Four of these five cases are immigrants and the last person is an Oyo State resident. 
 
“The results of five suspected cases came back positive on May 05, 2020. Four of these five cases are travellers from the North and the last one is an Oyo State resident. 
 
“Of the 33 active cases being managed by the state, two have absconded, possibly to their permanent places of residence. This brings the number of active cases in Oyo State to 31.” 
 
The Niger State patient is a woman who absconded from the Minna isolation centre. 
 
Health Commissioner Dr. Muhammed Makusidi spoke on Wednesday on the fleeing patient at a media briefing in Minna, the state capital. 
 
He described the escapee as a confirmed case from Kano, saying efforts were being made to trace her whereabouts and bring her back to the centre. 
 
The commissioner expressed fear over the danger she poses to the state if she is left to mingle with other residents. 
 
In Bauchi, Deputy Governor Baba Tela, who is also the Chairman of the Task Force Response Committee on Lassa Fever and Coronavirus, confirmed the escape of the patient.

Tragedy struck on Wednesday when a 26-year-old man, Olajide Asade, was crushed to death by a commercial car, while he was making a video call to his girlriend at the Adedero village on the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway. 
 
The accident involved a Honda Odyssey car with number plate AAA 589 FV, which was conveying crates of eggs.

It was gathered that the deceased was reportedly making a video call to his girlfriend while crossing the road when the accident occurred. 
 
An eyewitness revealed that the deceased and his brother boarded a car from the Kuto motor park in Abeokuta, but the vehicle developed a mechanical fault on the road. 
 
The eyewitness said while the other passengers were standing by the roadside waiting for the driver to repair the vehicle, the deceased reportedly concentrated on the video call. 
 
The deceased’s brother, Azeez, said they were both travelling to their mother’s residence in the Ajah area of Lagos State. 
 
Azeez confirmed that his brother had been making a video call to his girlfriend since they took off from Kuto in Abeokuta. 
 
He added that they left their apartment at Ijoga in Abeokuta very early in the morning to embark on the journey. 
 
Azeez maintained that the driver of the car, who hit Olajide, was on a normal speed. 
 
The driver, whose car hit the deceased, Bolaji Balogun, said Olajide was the one who bumped into his vehicle. 
 
Balogun, an employee of an agro firm, said he was going to the Obasanjo Farm to purchase crates of eggs for his company. 
 
The driver stated that the deceased had already got to the front of his car before he could apply the brake. 
 
Confirming the crash, the Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said there were two male occupants in the vehicle that killed Olajide. 
 
Akinbiyi said eyewitnesses narrated that a pedestrian was on a call while crossing the road and was knocked down by a vehicle heading for Abeokuta. 
 
He stated, “There is a road diversion along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu interchange due to the ongoing reconstruction; the deceased probably assumed it would be better and safer for him to cross to the other side, where road reconstruction is ongoing. 
 
“The man, while crossing back to the other side of the road, was making a video call and was oblivious to the fact that a vehicle was coming from the Sagamu end to Abeokuta. 
 
“The vehicle, a Honda Odyssey, hit him and he died on the spot. 
 
“His corpse has been deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the driver of the Honda Odyssey and the vehicle are now at the state Motor Traffic Division, Ibara, Abeokuta.”
