Policeman killed, council chairman escape as bandits attack Taraba LGs

Chairman, Takum local government council of Taraba State, Shiban Tikari, narrowly escaped death early Saturday morning as armed militia opened fire on his vehicle.
It was gathered that the attack, which took place in Dogo-Gawa village of the council, however, led to the gruesome killing of his police orderly.
The deceased policeman is of the 67 Mobile Police Squadron, located in the council.
In another related development, police in Wukari council of the State were reported to have foiled kidnap attempt in Choku village of the council, with a heavy exchange of gunshots between them and the bandits.

Takum and Wukari councils, located in the southern geopolitical zone of the State, have in recent time being under severe attacks.
Confirming the attack, Tikari said the militias, in their numbers, launched attack on his convoy while on his way to Takum.
He called for more redeployment of security personnel to the area.
A senior police officer from the area, who also confirmed the incident to our correspondent, could not understand why hoodlums terrorizing the areas have decided to make police their targets.
The police officer, who identified logistics as one of the challenges making it impossible for the hoodlums to be tracked down, urged the State government to adhere to its promise by collaborating with the force, especially in the areas of logistics.
Also not comfortable with the acts of the hoodlums in Choku village of Wukari, the Council chairman, Daniel Adi said the attackers who stormed the community at about 3a.m, were repelled by the police.
According to him “at about 3 a.m. while the police were on their duty post, unknown gunmen came around and started shooting sporadically. ”
Displaying the exploded bullets, he said “It was just by the grace of God and the experience of the police that made it impossible for the bandits to succeed.”
While applauding the police for their bravery acts, he said government at all levels should as a matter of urgency, come to the aide of the council, by drafting more operatives to the area.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Saturday morning, met with Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, at the Government House, Oke Ayoba, Ado Ekiti, the state capital.
Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, said the 79-year-old cleric paid a courtesy call on the governor.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olumide Aderinokun has reacted to the incessant cases of kidnapping in Ogun State, blaming the Governor, Dapo Abiodun.
The Ogun-born real estate mogul said he was holding “Gov Abiodun responsible for the high rate of kidnapping and insecurity in the state.”
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday by his media aide, Taiye Taiwo, Aderinokun expressed worry that due to the increasing cases of kidnapping in Ogun, doctors and nurses had embarked on strike, “leaving people in dire need of urgent health check-ups with no option.”
According to him, the recently launched Amotekun Corps has not been doing enough in protecting Ogun indigenes from kidnappers.

“Ogun state government can do better. Where is the recently launched Amotekun corps? Are they not funded with the state resources? So, why are they nowhere to be found,” Aderinokun asked.
He maintained that Ogun indigenes and residents should be able to sleep with their two eyes closed after enduring their daily struggles without basic amenities, saying “Ogun people deserve better than this.”
He recalled how two female students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ayetoro campus were abducted in March.
“Last week Wednesday, a medical doctor and a nurse were kidnapped along Abeokuta-Imeko road. The kidnapping reports did not stop as a dental therapist working at the General Hospital in Ijebu-Igbo was abducted on Monday.
“The APC-led federal government has shown incompetence in securing lives and properties across Nigeria but it should not be so in the Gateway State,” he stated.
Aderinokun called on the Abiodun government to “stop playing politics with Ogun residents’ safety.”
The head of Olumide and Stephanie Aderinokun Foundation, advised the government to train strong anti-kidnapping agents and create more jobs for the teeming youths.

The police have taken over Mapo Hall, Ibadan the venue of the rally organised by the Prof Banji Akintoye-led Ilana Odua to sensitise people about Yoruba self-determination.
Akintoye, who is an 86-year-old Emeritus Professor of History, was scheduled to lead the rally but our correspondent observed that the venue is surrounded by armed policemen and armour personnel carrier.
There are more than 20 police vehicles including patrol vans in Mapo Area.
The organisers have also not been seen at the venue although some members were said to have come earlier and left because of the situation there.

However, a truck-mounted with a megaphone was later seen with a few Yoruba agitators going towards Oritamerin from Bere side.
Calls put across to some of the organisers were not picked. But it was gathered that they were strategising for the next line of action.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has denied media reports connecting medical doctors with banditry in Zamfara State.
The association’s state Chairman, Dr Mannir Bature made this known in a statement on Friday, NAN reports.
Nwachukwu said this while reacting to reports which said that ‘Police in Zamfara arrested a medical doctor, seven others in connection with banditry.”
According to him, the suspect is a Medical Laboratory Technician, parading himself as a medical doctor to defraud individuals.

“Our attention has been drawn to a publication from various media organisations with a caption, ‘Police in Zamfara arrest medical doctor, 7 others in connection with banditry.
“We will like to make it clear to the general public that the above caption is incorrect.
“Investigations revealed that the person in question is a Medical Laboratory Technician, posing as a medical doctor to defraud individuals.
“This person is neither a resident nor does he work in Zamfara State.
“Lastly, only holders of MBBS, MBChB and BDS are entitled to be called medical doctor,” he said.

The Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Cross River State branch has condemned the purchase of car to judges or judicial workers after appointment.
Speaking with newsmen, the Chairman of JUSUN, Cross River State branch, Comrade Asanya Ebong decried such attitude of the executive arm of government, noting that it was bribery.
He said to prevent our judiciary workers from being corrupt, the JUSUN went on strike over financial autonomy, “We can buy vehicles for our judges, we want to do our things independently, you know judiciary is the hope of the common man and we cannot deny them (common man) such privilege or right.
“Our strike has entered its 10th day and we will continue with it until our demand of autonomy is granted. So far, the strike has been very successful. The strike is basically for the autonomy of judiciary.

“We were on strike before and thereafter suspended it base on trust. However, after having audience with the government, the agreement had never been implemented or respected and this very strike will not be suspended till all our demands are met and autonomy granted.
“The suspension of the strike before was to enable various arms of government to do the needful and see reasons with us to be independent but after a long talk, long negotiations, to look for lasting solution; here we are back to square one,” the Chairman regretted.
According to him, the financial autonomy they are asking for which brought about the strike is enshrined in the constitution, Section 121 Sub-section 3 and Mr President has signed Executive Order No 10, asking the state government to respect and implement the provision of the constitution but nothing has been done.
“The strike will continue because without the financial autonomy, the Judiciary will continue to be appendage of the executive arm of government and more so, Judiciary that suppose to be the hope of the common will not attend that status
“And nobody should expect judiciary to go cap in hand to beg the executive for money, we need to be independent and a situation where a governor gives out car keys after appointment of judges is not right, it’s a means to seek for favour..The judiciary is supposed to buy cars for her judges and do her things independently,” Comrade Asanya stated.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said that the northern part of Nigeria is one of the safest places for the Igbo ethnic group to live and do their business.
This is according to the chairman of the group in the 19 northern states, Augustine Amaechi, who spoke yesterday in Abuja.
It was reported that Amaechi while acknowledging that there have been some skirmishes with their host communities, noted that it is unavoidable as “it is expected in a developing economy.”
He said the agitation for secession coming from the South-East is a result of a lack of employment in the region, stressing that the Igbo need the north for their financial strength to be maintained.

He said, “Our elders are saying that even if the youth are agitating and angry, we need a restructure of Nigeria and not a division of Nigeria because you can’t sell what you produce in your village to make big sales like in Alaba Market in Lagos.”
On his own part, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, George Obiozor, called for peace and unity, adding that the Igbo nation is not at war with anybody.
“All we want is to be treated equally with other people. It is time for us to speak truth to power. We need peace and unity and they can’t be gotten through propaganda and transparency must be followed,” he said.

Former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has given reasons why Northern Governors opposed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015.
He said it was because they felt the North would be disadvantaged if Jonathan returned to power.
Speaking in Minna on Friday, Aliyu claimed there had been an agreement that Jonathan would complete the remaining tenure of former President Musa Yar’adua’s tenure and contest the 2011 election as a sole candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said Jonathan’s insistence on vying for a second term in 2015 was against the agreement the then northern Governors had with him.

“All the governors in the North under the PDP supported the then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to complete the remaining years of Yar’Adua’s tenure and to contest the next presidential election as a sole candidate of our great party.
“However, midway, President Goodluck Jonathan insisted on running for the office in 2015 against the grain of our earlier agreement.
“Since this was against the grain of our earlier agreement in the party, and which we, the governors in the North felt the North would have been shortchanged if Jonathan had succeeded, we rose stoutly to insist on the agreement we all had.
“On that premise, we opposed Jonathan. But all along, Goodluck Jonathan had enjoyed every support from the governors in the north and the entire region.”

The total active cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the country has risen to 7,782.
This follows the confirmation of 67 new cases by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.
The agency made the announcement on Friday night in a post on its verified Facebook page.
So far, the country has recorded 164,147 cases since inception with 2,061 deaths while about 154,304 patients have been successfully treated and discharged.

Nigerians have joined the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged printing of N60 billion by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to support the federal allocation to the three tiers of government for the month of March, 2021, calling on the Federal Government to come out clean by telling Nigerians, not just if it indeed printed the money as alleged but also the real situation with the nation’s economy.
It was gathered that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State kick-started the controversy, when he alleged, during the Edo transition committee stakeholders engagement in Benin, that the Federal Government had to print N60 billion to support allocation for the month of March.
The governor, who painted a grim picture of the economic situation in the country, said: “Nigeria has changed. The economy of Nigeria is not the same again whether we like it or not. Since the civil war, we have been managing, saying money is not our problem as long as we are pumping crude oil every day. So, we have run a very strange economy and strange presidential system where the local, state and federal government, at the end of the month, go and earn salaries. We are the only country in the world that does that.
“Everywhere else, the government relies on the people to produce taxes and that is what they use to run the local government, state and the federation. But with the way we run Nigeria, the country can go to sleep. At the end of the month, we just go to Abuja, collect money and we come back to spend. We are in trouble, huge financial trouble”, he said.

Not done, Obaseki, released the bomb that has continued to reverberate all over, when he said:“When we got FAAC for March, the Federal Government printed an additional N50-N60bn to top up for us to share. This April, we will go to Abuja and share. By the end of this year, our total borrowing is going to be within N15trn to N16trn.’’
This revelation has continued to upset many, including the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who both reacted but differently. While the finance minister outrightly denied printing of the said amount and insisted that whatever money was shared came from the country’s revenue, Emefiele tried to be smart by half, without completely admitting or denying but rationalizing such a hugely important national discourse.
In her response, the Minister, Ahmed said the claim by Obaseki was not just false but sad, insisting that the money being shared monthly at FAAC is revenue generated. “The issue that was raised by the Edo State Governor, for me, is very sad because it is not a fact.
“What we distribute at FAAC is a revenue that is generated and in fact, distribution revenue is a public information.
“We publish revenue generated by FIRS, the Customs and the NNPC and we distribute at FAAC.
“So, it is not true to say we printed money to distribute at FAAC. It is not true’, Zainab Ahmed said with a bold face.
However, standing by his claim, Obaseki called out the finance minister, accusing her of playing the Ostrich and the federal government of monetary rascality, in a series of tweets.
Obaseki tweeted: “While we do not want to join issues with the Federal Ministry of Finance, we believe it is our duty to offer useful advice for the benefit of our country.
“The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed should rally Nigerians to stem the obvious fiscal slide facing our country.
“Rather than play the Ostrich, we urge the government to take urgent steps to end the current monetary rascality, so as to prevent the prevailing economic challenge from degenerating further.
“We believe it is imperative to approach the Nigerian project with all sense of responsibility and commitment and not play to the gallery because ultimately, time shall be the judge of us all.”
Emefiele, while trying to rationalise and justify the action of the government, ended up painting a grimmer picture of the state of the economy, even worse than Obaseki had done in his initial allegation.
According to the CBN Governor, it was the job of the CBN to print money and lend it to government, slamming the allegation by Obaseki, which he failed to deny, as “unfortunate and totally inappropriate”.
Insisting that printing is a key mandate of the apex bank, Emefiele said the bank must always act to support the government at times of ‘financial difficulties.’
He said: “If you understand the concept of printing of money. The concept printing of money is about lending money.
“That’s our job – to print. It’s about lending money and so there’s no need putting the controversy about printing of money as if we are going into the factory, printing the Naira and start distributing on the streets.
“For us to see some people playing some games, overheating the polity talking about printing of money, I think it is unfortunate and totally inappropriate. I would like to advise that this should stop. We should all work for the growth of our country and not play politics.
“It is very inappropriate for people to just give some colouration to the word ‘printing of money’ as if it is a foreign word coming from the sky.
“In 2015/2016, we were in a similar [fiscal] situation, but it is far worse today. We provided budget support facility to all the states of the country and that loan remains unpaid till now. We are going to insist on the states paying the loan back since they are effectively accusing us of giving them loans.
“Most countries of the world today are confronted by not just the health crisis from the COVID-19 pandemic but also economic crisis. I keep saying this: it would be irresponsible of the Central Bank of Nigeria or any Central Bank to stand idle and refuse to support its government at this time. Whatever we do in Nigeria is being done in any clime.
“Nigeria is unfortunately in a very bad situation and we cannot pretend about it in the sense that we are facing problems about productivity output which is gross domestic product (GDP). We are working very hard to see how we can get our heads above water. We are also concerned with issues of inflation.”
For Emefiele, printing of money to lend to government for sharing among the three tiers is not a new thing, as he alluded that it had been done in 2015/2016 when the situation was not this bad. He also said it is the same thing that is being done in other countries facing similar challenges.
The question most Nigerians are asking is why the finance minister, Zainab Ahmed denied the allegation. Most of them are worried as to Why she tried to cover up what will eventually become public knowledge with time.
For many Nigerians, Minister Ahmed’s denial only follows what the Nigerian government has been known for over the years; denying the obvious and painting the picture of an Eldorado that only exists in the minds of government officials and their spin doctors.
According to Oladele Bello, a banker and economic expert, what is happening is obvious, as the current government has tried hard to keep the real situation away from Nigerians, just to hoodwink citizens with fake reports of performance and reeling out numbers that only exist in their imaginations.
“This is not rocket science, the boat of government was rocked by the revelation by Governor Godwin Obaseki. I can tell you for free that they never expected that the printing of the money will become public knowledge, thereby, rocking the boat of the artificial image of performance and robust economy it had always laid claim to.
“The reality is that Nigeria is not just broke but the economy is already in shambles. Government is not generating enough revenue to keep up with what is needed, and they do not want to admit it. We are indeed in trouble with the insatiable appetite of this administration for loans, with those saddled with running the economy constantly telling us that the nation’s debt is still tolerable. How can the debt profile of a country that uses a huge chunk of its budget to service be tolerable? These people qualify to be called Voodoo economists!”, he said.
For Akintoba Olaore, a chartered accountant with an audit firm in the Ikeja area of Lagos, what the federal government did is indefensible, reeks of financial recklessness and portends greater danger for the nation.
Olaore said: “What government did through the CBN cannot be defended at all. It is better government opens up that the nation is in distress and we all will know what has come upon us. I do not think it is right hiding behind one finger, telling Nigerians all is well when nothing is actually well. That’s deception and it will not help this government or Nigerians.
“As it stands, what government has done is concealing the true position of the national economy from Nigerians. It is just like the management or board of a publicly quoted company concealing the true financial position of the company from shareholders. It is a major corporate infraction that can lead to the sacking of the board. Government needs to urgently give a full disclosure of the true situation of the state of the economy and stop living in denial.
“Also, government officials must know that their offices and positions are held in trust for the Nigerian people and they must be accountable to them at all times. The people are their employers and only them deserve their loyalties.”
Also, reacting to the controversy, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called for the sacking of the Finance Minister for attempting to cover up the printing of the money.
According to the PDP, the admission by the CBN Governor has vindicated it that the apex bank has been printing the nation’s currency at the behest of the Buhari administration and that the government under the APC has been characterized by “concealments, deceit, and falsehood”.
The party said in a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan on Friday: “Indeed, the admission by the CBN governor that “Nigeria is unfortunately in a very bad situation” further justifies our position that the Buhari-led APC administration has wrecked the economy of our nation.
“Our party is worried over the huge negative impact of indiscriminate printing of currency which has led to the unprecedented rise in inflation rate to 18.17% as disclosed by the Federal Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.
“The PDP calls out President Buhari to come clean on the amount that has been printed so far by the CBN to finance the deficit caused by the financial mismanagement of his government as well as what the funds had been used for.
“Furthermore, for failing the full disclosure test, the PDP demands that the Minister of Finance should immediately be relieved of her position, while the President accepts responsibility for the indiscriminate printing of currency in our Naira.
“Our party implores President Buhari to save our nation by allowing better hands to manage and salvage our economy before it is too late.”

 After spending two nights in its custody, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, released former governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, on administrative bail. But the EFCC had to vary the bail terms before Senator Okorocha could meet the terms and be able to go home after spending 48 hours with his interrogators.

 A source said the anti-graft agency had demanded that the former governor produced two former governors or two serving senators from the South East as a condition for his bail but he objected to it on the grounds that it would be difficult to achieve that within the short period at his disposal. Also read: Akeredolu threatens to embarrass ex-Deputy Governor over unreturned government vehicles Based on the objection, Okorocha’s legal team filed for a variation of the bail conditions, which the EFCC finally granted. 
 
It was however, learned that the former governor was able to produce a ranking Senator from the Northeast as a guarantor for his release from EFCC custody. A source in EFCC confirmed that the former governor would have another date with the operatives but did not specify the date he is expected to reappear. The whole gamut of the interrogation, according to the source, relates to the N7.9 billion allegedly traced in many banks to the former governor, something he has repeatedly denied and had written a statement in that regard as part of his submission on Wednesday night to the anti-graft agency. The spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the release of the former governor but declined to give details on the matter. Okorocha was arrested on Tuesday by EFCC operatives on the suspicion of diverting Imo State funds into private property and banks but he has consistently denied the claim by the EFCC. 
 
It was not clear as of last night if the EFCC had gathered adequate evidence to charge him and his associates linked with the cash and choice property to the court.

Nigeria is the number one importer of commercial services in Africa in 2020, data released by World Trade Organisation showed on Friday.
The Geneva-based international trade organisation ranked Nigeria 25th commercial importer in the world but the first commercial importer in Africa followed by Egypt which was ranked 28th in the world.
While Egypt and Morocco made the list of world exporters led by the United States, Nigeria was conspicuously absent in the global commercial exporters’ list.
The US also ranked first in the commercial importers’ list followed by China, United Kingdom and Japan; while US, UK, China and India topped the exporters’ list.

WTO noted that preliminary estimates were based on quarterly statistics.
“Figures for a number of countries and territories have been estimated by the Secretariat,” it said.
“Data for 2020 are not yet available for the United Arab Emirates. In 2019, commercial services exports were valued at US$72 billion and imports at US$73 billion.”
Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is the first African and first female director-general in the 26-year history of the WTO.

National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has denied distributing bags of rice in some states in the northern part of the country.
Tinubu stated this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria and signed by his Media Aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, in Lagos.
NAN reports that a viral video of images depicting the face of the APC leader on bags of rice was recently being circulated on some social media platforms.
“We have seen the images being circulated of bags of rice depicting Asiwaju’s face being distributed across parts of the North,” Tinubu said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is now re-energised and recommitted to executing the party’s lofty developmental objectives after his medical trip abroad.
It was reported that Buhari arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport Abuja on Thursday evening.
Reacting, Sen. John Akpanudoedehe, National Secretary of the party’s Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), in a statement on Friday, said the party was highly elated at the return of President Buhari.
“Mr president is undoubtedly re-energised and recommitted to executing the lofty developmental objectives of the APC-led administration,” he said.

Paul Pogba has attacked Jose Mourinho’s man-management style, accusing him of “going against players” and making them feel like “they don’t exist any more”.
After Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United manager in 2016, he made Pogba the world’s most expensive player.
Pogba was instrumental as United claimed a League Cup and Europa League double in 2017, but the pair had an uneasy relationship before Mourinho was sacked in December 2018 and succeeded by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mourinho’s relationship with some of his players deteriorated following that first campaign and there were reports of a training ground spat with Pogba after the France midfielder was stripped of the United vice-captaincy in September 2018.
<a name='more' id="more"></a>“What I have now with Ole is different because he wouldn’t go against the players,” Pogba said in a Sky Sports interview.
“Maybe Ole wouldn’t pick them, but it’s not like he puts them on the side like they don’t exist anymore. That’s the difference between Mourinho and Ole.
“Once I had a great relationship with Mourinho. Everybody sees that and the next day you don’t know what happened.
“That’s the strange thing I had with Mourinho. And I cannot explain to you because, even me, I don’t know.”
Pogba’s comments came after United piled the pressure on Mourinho with a 3-1 win at Tottenham last Sunday.
Spurs are six points off the top four with just seven Premier League games to play.
Solskjaer and Mourinho clashed in a heated exchange of words after the United boss was unhappy when Son Heung-min went down in the build-up to Edinson Cavani’s controversial disallowed opener.
Mourinho said he was “very disappointed” by Solskjaer’s claims he would not feed his son if he had behaved like the South Korean, but Pogba accused the Portuguese of using deflection tactics to take the focus away from Tottenham’s performance.
Pogba said: “I am sure Mourinho said something that made people speak. That’s what he does. We got the result that we wanted. Ole knows it and we enjoyed that moment.
“We know Mourinho and what he likes. We don’t need this.”

No fewer than three persons have been killed in Taraba State by suspected militias from the neighboring Benue State.
This is coming when the people of the community are still in tears following recent windstorm that destroyed goods worth millions of Naira in the community.
The attackers, who launched their terrorism act on Rafinkada community of Wukari local government council Thursday, were said to have killed three persons, including two women and an elderly man.
The attack has further frustrated the peace efforts of the State Governor, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku.

An eyewitness, who claimed to have narrowly escaped the scene, said the attackers stormed the village in their numbers on motorbikes, in the early hours of the day, shooting sporadically.
Several other persons were said to have sustained various degrees of injuries from gunshots.
The attack came barely three weeks after three farmers were gruesomely murdered in their farms located in the same council while preparing the soil for the forthcoming farming season.
Several sources from the affected community who spoke through telephone conversations with Daily Post, also claimed that the situation had forced several residents of the community to flee their homes.
Another source told our correspondent that apart from his mother, his younger brother was also killed.
The council chairman, Daniel Adi expressed dismay at the attack, which he ascribed to the “Tiv militias from Benue State.”
Also confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Misal said the command was aware of the development and that there were efforts to track down the perpetrators.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said its primary election for Anambra governorship election will hold on June 26.
Prof. Al-Mustapha Medaner, the party’s Director of Organisation, who made this known in a statement, said that the party would start the sales of expression of interest and nomination forms for the election from April 15 to June 8.
According to him, the last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents by aspirants would be June 8.
He noted that screening of aspirants would be on June 10, adding that the publication of claims and objections would be on June 12 while screening appeals would be on June 15.

Medaner further explained that the governorship expression of interest form would cost N2.5 million while the nomination form would cost N20 million totalling N22.5 million.
He added that physically challenged aspirants and females would only pay 50 per cent of the prescribed fees for the position.

President Muhammadu Buhari has again challenged the new service chiefs and the acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to work diligently towards meeting the expectations of Nigerians.
The president gave the charge while assessing the performances of the new service chiefs as well as the tasks before them and that of the acting I-G.
The president, who fielded questions from State House correspondents on his arrival from London after successful medical check-up, said:
”Oh yes, they (service chiefs) have been in the system all the way, they know what is wrong, they know what is right and I think they are doing their best.

”I hope their best will be good enough for Nigeria.”
President Buhari, who announced the appointment of the acting I-G, Usman Baba, while in London, via the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, said due process was strictly followed in the selection of the new I-G.
He said: ”Well, we went through the system, there was a committee by the Minister of Police Affairs, they gave me some names and he happened to be the one chosen.
”He knows his job, he has been in it for a long time, he went through all the trainings, he has the necessary experience.
”So, we have a high expectation from him.”
The presidential aircraft conveying the president and some presidential aides landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at about 4.45 p.m, on Thursday.
Those at the airport to welcome the president included the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammed Bello, and the National Security Adviser to the President, retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno.
Others were the service chiefs, acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufa’i, the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi and other presidential aides.
It was gathered that the president, after a brief welcoming ceremony at the airport, boarded a presidential helicopter that conveyed him to the Presidential Villa.
President Buhari had on March 30 departed Abuja for London, United Kingdom, for routine medical check-up.

The Indigenous People of Biafra has said it produces its arms locally.
The secessionist group stated this on Thursday while debunking allegation credited to the Department of State Services that IPOB was plotting to attack banks to get money to purchase arms.
The Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, described the allegation as a poor script.
He said, “We are not looking for money to buy arms because we produce our arms locally.

While assuring banks in the area of safety, the pro-Biafra publicist said IPOB members were freedom fighters and not criminals.
The group’s statement read in part, “The DSS is propelling this wicked propaganda to blackmail Eastern Security Network and IPOB, and dent our global reputation.
“We are not looking for money to buy arms because we produce our arms locally and cannot attack or kidnap anybody for ransom. “We don’t inflict pains on the people we are fighting for their freedom. DSS must stop this rubbish and engage their time on something more meaningful. This poor script cannot fly… ESN has never left its mandate which is to defend Biafra land against Fulani terrorists and killer herdsmen.”
The statement added, “All banks in Biafraland must be wary of the DSS because it is possible they are planning to sponsor attacks on banks and turn around as usual to blame it on IPOB and ESN.”
The group added that any armed robbery gang that would in an attempt to tarnish the reputation of IPOB and ESN would regret their action.

Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has asked Oduduwa Republic agitators to state what they have in stock for Muslim children and women in the South West and what their plan is for hijab.
MURIC also wants to know if there is any provision for civil shariah which “Yoruba Muslims have been demanding for ages.”
The Islamic group said it was drawing the attention of the agitators of Oduduwa Republic to the plight of Muslims in Yorubaland.
It said that leaders of the groups agitating for breakaway must admit that there is a strain in Christian/Muslim relationship in the South West and must profer solutions to addressing it.

It is the height of hypocrisy and it will not help the cause of the Yoruba nation.
“We, therefore, ask the Yoruba agitators, what do you have in stock for Muslim children and women? What is your plan for hijab? Is it as dictated by CAN? Is there any provision for civil shariah which Yoruba Muslims have been demanding for ages? The response of the agitators to these questions will go a long way in determining their readiness to tolerate Muslims or the plot to continue oppressing us,” the statement added.
“Evangelist Joshua Olalekan Ifede must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.
“Who said there is religious tolerance in Yorubaland? The female Muslim teachers addressed by Evangelist Joshua are all of Yoruba stock just like the evangelist himself, but that did not stop him from stereotyping them.
“We therefore call on the state government to clarify its position in this diplomatic conundrum. Ogun State Muslims will, thereafter, know the next line of action. Nobody should think that Nigerian Muslims will abandon their women in the hands of oppressors of women and certificated Muslim-haters. We assert that all options are on the table except violence.
“This man has exhibited extreme hatred for Muslims. We have no confidence in any promotion exercise conducted under his supervision.
“Evangelist Joshua has failed to separate the calling of the church from his official duty as chairman of the Commission in whose hands is the welfare of both Muslims and Christian teachers.”

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has promised to lead Kano Pillars to win the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, title.
Musa made the vow while receiving his jersey number on Thursday evening at the club’s Secretariat in Kano.
Recall that the former Leicester City winger formally signed a short-term deal with Kano Pillars earlier this week.
The 28-year-old has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last October.

“I left Pillars over 10-years ago without winning the league then,” Musa said.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has registered another 80 cases of COVID-19 in eleven states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
This brings the total number of recorded cases so far to 164,080.
NCDC made this known on Thursday night via a tweet on its verified Twitter handle.
The agency also announced the discharge of 15 patients, bringing the number of recoveries since the outbreak of the virus in 2020 to 154,285.

Unknown gunmen have reportedly killed three policemen while the officers were on ‘stop and search’ along Onuebonyi, Nwezenyi Road, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred Wednesday night when the gunmen opened fire on the officers, killed three and carted away rifles belonging to the deceased.
When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Odah Loveth Obianuju told newsmen that the incident “could be true but it’s not officially confirmed yet”.
According to her, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operation, was at the scene to ascertain the level of damage.

Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki has faulted the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, for denying that the Federal Government printed N60 billion in March to support allocation to states.
The governor, who accused the Federal Government of “monetary rascality’, also tackled the finance minister for “playing the Ostrich”.
Obaseki said this in a series of tweets to react to the denial by Zainab that his claim on FG printing N60bn was “untrue”.
Obaseki said, “While we do not want to join issues with the Federal Ministry of Finance, we believe it is our duty to offer useful advice for the benefit of our country.

Acting Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate disbandment of the IGP Monitoring Satellite Offices in Lagos and Port Harcourt over complaints of harassment and operating beyond their briefs by Nigerians.
Speaking at his maiden meeting with Command Police Commissioners and zonal AIGs, in Abuja on Thursday, Baba said the IGP Monitoring Units will be re-organised.
The development is coming 24 hours after the Police Service Commission asked the IGP to check the proliferation of police investigating units.
The commission stated that the units were bringing huge embarrassments to the force.

The commission Chairman, Musiliu Smith, said there must be proper and close monitoring of police investigative units to stem the atrocities its officials committed in the line of duty.

The French embassy in Pakistan on Thursday advised all French nationals and companies to temporarily leave the country, after violent anti-France protests paralysed large parts of the country this week.
“Due to the serious threats to French interests in Pakistan, French nationals and French companies are advised to temporarily leave the country,” the embassy said in an email to French citizens.
“The departures will be carried out by existing commercial airlines.”
Anti-French sentiment has been simmering for months in Pakistan since the government of President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for a magazine’s right to republish cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed — deemed blasphemous by many Muslims.

On Wednesday, the Pakistani government moved to ban an extremist political party whose leader had called for the expulsion of the French ambassador.
Saad Rizvi, leader of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), was detained hours after making his demands, bringing thousands of his supporters to the streets in cities across Pakistan.
Two police officers died in the clashes, which saw water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets used to hold back crowds.
The TLP are notorious for holding days-long, violent road protests over blasphemy issues, causing major disruption to the country.
But successive governments have a long history of avoiding confrontation with hardline Islamist groups, fearing any crackdown on religious parties could spark wider violence in the deeply conservative Islamic republic.
“We are in favour of protecting the Prophet’s honour, but the demand which they are seeking could have portrayed Pakistan as a radical nation worldwide,” Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told a news conference on Wednesday.
Macron’s comments in September triggered anger across the Muslim world, with tens of thousands in Pakistan, neighboring Iran and other Muslim countries flooding the streets and organizing anti-French boycotts.
TLP supporters brought the capital Islamabad to a standstill at the time.
Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in conservative Pakistan, where laws allow for the death penalty to be used on anyone deemed to have insulted Islam or Islamic figures.
On Twitter, the hashtag “#FrenchLeavePakistan” was trending with 42,000 tweets as of Thursday afternoon.
Weeks after satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo republished the cartoons, its former offices in Paris were attacked by a Pakistani man who stabbed two people.
At the time, Prime Minister Imran Khan accused the French president of attacking the Muslim faith and urged Islamic countries to work together to counter what he called growing repression in Europe.
In an address to the United Nations, Khan, a populist leader who has been known to play to Pakistan’s hardline religious base, blasted Charlie Hebdo for re-publishing the cartoons, saying “wilful provocations” should be “universally outlawed”.

Tragedy struck in Okuku, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, on Tuesday, after some siblings allegedly beat their eldest brother, Chinonso Azuatalam, popularly known as Dakwada, to death over a disagreement on the sharing of their late father’s wealth.
Chinonso, a father of two whose wife is pregnant, was allegedly beaten to death in the presence of their maternal uncles in the compound, who came to share the inheritance.
A source in the community, who confided in our correspondent, disclosed that while the deceased, who was a welder, was fighting with his immediate younger brother, Chibuzor, their younger brothers, who are twins, hit Chinonso with a big stick on the back of his head and he lost consciousness.
Chinonso was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The source disclosed that their sister, Chioma Azuatalam, a serving police officer, also allegedly beat up the deceased’s pregnant wife.
According to the source, on getting information that their eldest brother had been pronounced dead, the brothers fled immediately.

The source said, “Chinonso Azuatalam was the eldest son of the family. He had three younger brothers, Chibuzor and the twin boys. They were having serious issues with the sharing formula of their late father’s wealth.
“While Chinonso was insisting that the properties be shared equally, the three other brothers, Chioma and their mother connived to share them without his consent.
“In accordance with Igbo culture, their maternal relations from Agwa in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State were invited. While their uncles presided over a meeting on Tuesday, house, tempers flared.
“The first and second sons started fighting. While the exchange of punches lasted, one of the twins hit the first son with a big stick and he lost consciousness. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Their sister, Chioma Azuatalam, who is a police officer, also beat the deceased man’s pregnant wife. The brothers ran away on realising what had happened, but Chioma has been arrested.
“The deceased had two daughters and his wife is heavily pregnant.”
The President-General of the community, Martin Daniel, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
He said the community was working with the police in ensuring that other casualties would not be recorded.
The community leader added that so far, only the female cop had been arrested over the incident.
The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed that Chioma had been arrested.
He also said one of the siblings, who hit the deceased with a wood, had been apprehended.
Ikeokwu stated, “The deceased picked up a knife and threatened to kill his mother. His sister, who is a police officer, called her two other brothers. They came and a fight ensued and one of them hit him with a wood. He lost consciousness and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was pronounced dead.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has insisted that Borussia Dortmund star, Erling Haaland, was almost unstoppable during both sides’ Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie in Germany.
Guardiola explained that Haaland is a top-class player, adding that the Norway international will be stronger in the future.
Phil Foden’s strike against Dortmund secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time under Guardiola’s leadership.
Riyad Mahrez had equalised from the spot as Man City shrugged off Jude Bellingham’s early opener to beat Dortmund 4-2 on aggregate.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice has called on the Minister of Defence, Bashir Salihi Magashi, to come clean on the controversy trailing the $1 billion released by the Federal Government for arms purchase.
The group said Magashi should open up on how the Ministry of Defence expended the funds and what arms were purchased with the fund.
Recall that Babagana Monguno, National Security Adviser (NSA), had said funds for arms purchase were missing under former service chiefs.
However, addressing a news conference on Tuesday, Timothy Charles, the National Coordinator of the group, said the silence of the Minister of Defence in this regard leaves many questions unanswered.

His speech reads in part, “We must agree that these issues are of great importance to the well-being of the country at large, given the country’s security challenges in recent times as well as the government’s efforts in addressing these challenges.
It’s common knowledge that the Muhammadu Buhari administration had in April 2018 approved the release of $1bn to Nigerian Defence authorities for the purchase of security equipment to fight insecurity in Nigeria under the purview of the Ministry of Defence.
It’s also succinct to state that the Honorable Minister of Defence, who is in charge of the Ministry of Defence, should provide answers to questions surrounding arms purchase in Nigeria. It’s thus despicable that there has been some well-orchestrated attempt by some vested interest to divert attention from the Minister of Defence.
We’re constrained to add that the statement credited to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, during his appearance before the House of Representatives is diversionary and an indication that he’s carrying out the whims and caprices of the Honorable Minister of Defence.
The Coalition for Truth and Justice uses this medium to call on the Honorable Minister to come out clear by providing the much-needed information surrounding the $1bn released to purchase arms.
If this isn’t the case, we then wonder why the Honorable Minister of Defence has elected to play to the gallery in a case as sensitive as this. More alarming is that the Chief of Army Staff has been carrying out acts that aim to shield the Honorable Minister of Defence.
We’re constrained to add that if the Chief of Army Staff who has barely spent months in office wouldn’t be bold enough to call a spade a spade, we’re afraid that his ability to lead the prestigious Nigerian Army is indeed questionable.
It’s our considered opinion that the Minister of Defence must, as a matter of necessity and urgency, provide the general public details on how the $1bn was expended under his watch in the spirit of transparency and accountability.”

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has denied endorsing any zonal arrangement ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee made its position known while disowning a zoning list of national officers and political positions for the 2023 presidential election.
The National Secretary Caretaker Committee of APC, John Akpanudoedehe, made the denial in a statement he issued yesterday.
A list had gone viral on social media with the title “APC announces zoning arrangement ahead of 2023 election year”.

In the list, the party was said to have zoned the nation’s presidency and senate presidency to the South, while its National Chairmanship was zoned to the North.
However, Akpanudoedehe, while dismissing the list, said: “People who are interested in running for one office or the other can speculate. As far as I am concerned, at the last Caretaker Committee meeting we had, we did not discuss that.
“That is not what we are concerned with now. What we are concerned with is data collection. How to collect data without making mistakes.
“We are not going to be pressurized by sentiments and then we do the wrong thing.
“Let me say that zoning is not for the Caretaker Committee alone. It has to do with the President, it has to do with other major stakeholders, it has to do with a lot of people.
“I want to mute the speculation. The list is not from us ( Caretaker Committee). There is no way such a decision will be taken without consulting with the President, consulting with the governors and other major stakeholders.
“People should disregard the list. We are focused on delivering our mandate and we are to do it rightly”

Living Faith Church founded by Bishop David Oyedepo is to spend a whopping over N160 billion to build its 100,000-seater auditorium, known as ‘The Ark.’

The ground breaking ceremony for The Ark was carried out by Bishop Oyedepo in March 2021.
Top source in Living Faith revealed that over N160 billion has been earmarked for the gigantic project.
It was learnt that N45 billion has already been released for the project, which has already kicked off and to be completed in three years
First announced in late 2015 as the “Faith Theatre”, the 100,000 seat stadium-like project has now been officially renamed as “The Ark”, unveiled at the church earlier last Month.
Sited on about a 1,000 hectares of land (the site of the old Faith Academy compound), within the vast premises of the current church building, the Ark will specifically accommodate 106,000 seats and will include a 24 Floor Mission Tower (International Headquarters Facility) made up of two twin towers of 12 floors each.
Upon completion, the existing 50,000 seater Faith Tabernacle will serve as an overflow facility.
The massive project is being handled by Laralek Ultimate Limited, whose Managing Director is Adebiyi Olalekan.
Oyedepo had recently said members of the church would not be tasked to contribute for the project.

The opposition party said Buhari’s incompetence pushed Twitters to site its African Headquarters in Ghana despite the fact that Nigeria has far more twitter traffic and more business prospects.
 
The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said, “Twitter’s preference for Ghana over Nigeria was occasioned by inconsistent economic policies, obnoxious suppression of free speech, stifling of online freedom and open internet by the Buhari administration and the APC.”
 
The statement read in part, “This is in addition to infrastructural decay, massive corruption and manifest failure of the Buhari Presidency and the APC to address the escalated insecurity brought upon our nation by their incompetent watch.
 
“Indeed the decision by Twitter to by-pass Nigeria to locate its African operational base in Ghana is another sad commentary of how our nation, which was hitherto a global investment hub under the PDP, has now been so degraded in global economic competitiveness under the APC.
 
“Nigerians were heavily despaired on Monday when the founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, announced that his company will be setting up its headquarters on the continent in Ghana despite Nigeria’s domineering twitter traffic in the sub region.
 
“With an estimated 39.6 million twitter subscribers in Nigeria, which is bigger than the population of Ghana, Nigeria ought to be the destination, but for the anti-people policies of the APC administration.
“It is sad that our nation has continued to lose huge foreign direct investments, which would have brought in more economic opportunities, especially for our youths, just because the Buhari Presidency and the APC lack the capacity to deliver on good governance.
“The preference by Twitter for Ghana over Nigeria has further demonstrated that the Buhari administration’s claims on ease of doing business in Nigeria are mere media hypes.
 
“Moreover, if President Buhari and the APC have the interest of the struggling youth demography of our nation at heart, they ought to have taken the necessary proactive steps to ensure that Twitter brought this huge investment to Nigeria, particularly given that we have the highest number of Twitter users on the continent.
 
” It is indeed disturbing that the Buhari administration is taking no decisive steps to address the worsening situation in our country, which has become the world poverty capital under their watch.
 
“The incompetence, insensitivity, corruption and laid-back attitude of the Buhari administration have continued to bring woes to our nation with an escalated 33% unemployment rate, closure of over 40 million hitherto vibrant businesses with millions of families now unable to afford the basic necessities of life.
 
” It is painful that despite our national potentials, President Buhari administration has not shown the required commitment of engaging foreign investors and captains of industries to attract investments as being done by Presidents of other countries.
“Instead the Buhari Presidency is only interested in accumulating foreign loans and mortgaging the future of our nation.
“It has therefore becomes clearer that our nation cannot achieve any headway with the APC on the saddle.
“The PDP therefore charges Nigerians to remain focused as we collectively rally on the opportunities granted by democracy to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of APC misrule.”

The purported truce between former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and Governor Seyi Makinde has been thrown into the dustbin as Fayose on Wednesday attacked Makinde, saying he looked quiet outside but deadly.

Fayose spoke in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
The former governor was shown a video where some thugs were threatening to kill him at the just concluded PDP’s Southwest zonal congress in Osogbo, Osun State and was asked to comment what the development meant for the PDP.
 
Fayose said the people in the video were waiting for him to attend the congress and that they would kill him.
He identified the spokesman of the PDP thugs to be a transport union chairman from Oyo State, saying they were sponsored by Makinde to threaten him.
 
He said this was enough to show the world that if such characters were supporting Makinde, it showed the kind of people behind him.
 
“What this gentleman was saying at a time before they came to the venue, they said Fayose, we will kill you, we are waiting for you here, we are going to kill you.
 
“This is the chairman of the Road Transport Workers in Oyo State. These people came with governor Makinde’s convoy. Everybody knows, who is this man? Is he the road transport worker in Ekiti?
 
“This is enough to show the whole world, if Governor Makinde, a first time two-year-old governor, yet to be two-year-old governor is parading characters like these, it simply shows the kind of people behind him.
“This is shameful for our party, I take responsibility, in the 21st century, thuggery is shameful for our party. You remember I was in Ondo, these same people came to attack me and I told Governor Makinde, so I am glad the whole world is seeing this.
 
“Governor Makinde, he looks quiet but deadly. Parading these people to wait for me there, they are over a thousand and they were saying they would cut my neck if I dare come to the congress and that was why I made up my mind that I must attend that congress. Even if I die there, I die, so I attended the congress, by the time I got there, they fled.
 
“So, I don’t think that this is right for Nigeria, it is not right for our party and is condemnable. If anybody wants to do election and you parade 200 buses of thugs, it is sad.”
