The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has quizzed top management staff of the Niger Delta Development Commission and recovered documents on the diversion of funds, procurement fraud and misappropriation of N5.4 billion COVID-19 fund by the officials.
The ICPC said some NDDC directors were interrogated at its headquarters in Abuja after months of intelligence gathering, following the receipt of petitions from Nigerians on the alleged illegalities and contract fraud by some officials of the agency.
The ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, said the commission is also investigating the payment of millions of naira to staff of the NDDC for foreign training during the COVID-19 lockdown which they never attended, as well as the non-payment of entitlements to students on foreign scholarships.
Ogugua in a statement on Saturday titled, ‘ICPC quizzes NDDC directors, other officials,’ said, “The officials of the agency were also being investigated for their complicity in the alleged diversion of N5.474bn meant for the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment for health workers handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the nine states of NDDC.

“Other allegations being investigated by the anti-graft agency include the selling of back-dated contract award letters for projects and awards of contracts that were not captured in the budget of the NDDC.”
“ICPC had already retrieved relevant documents with which to continue investigations towards the recovery of diverted funds and prosecution of breaches of the law,” the commission stated.

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, is the top choice for the Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Director position.
The NFF is yet to name a replacement for Bitrus Bewerang, whose contract was not renewed in July.
Oliseh was a part of the Eagles that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and was in charge of the Eagles for almost a year.
He was Sports Director at Belgian side Eupen and also managed Vervietois and Fortuna Sittard, helping the latter gain promotion to the Eredivise, before parting ways with the Dutch side.
Our correspondent also gathered that former Eagles assistant coach Emmanuel Amuneke and US-based Dr Terry Eguaoje are also being considered for the role.

It was learnt that the NFF have made an offer of N3m to Amuneke to leave his current position with Misr Lel Makassa in Egypt, but the former Barcelona star reportedly considered the offer too small compared to what he earned at El Makkasa in Egypt.
The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games gold medallist and AFCON 1994 winner, according to sources, is on $20,000 monthly salary as Misr Lel Makassa’s Director of Academies in Africa.
Amuneke has worked severally with FIFA and coaches the Golden Eaglets’ to a fifth U-17 World Cup title in 2015.
He also managed the Taifa Stars of Tanzania at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. He has also worked as an assistant coach at Al-Hazem (Saudi Arabia) and coached Al Khartoum of Sudan.
Though little-known in Nigeria, Eguaoje Terry served as the Director of Coaching for Fusion Soccer Club before accepting a position with Texas Premier Girls Academy Programme.
He holds a Masters degree in Sport Management and has a Doctorate degree in Education. His coaching qualifications include USSF “A” License, NSCAA Premier Diploma, USSF National Youth, NSCAA National Youth, and USSF Goalkeeper License.
Eguaoje is believed to be the top choice of sports ministry officials.

Olawale Ashimi, Nigerian singer best known as Brymo, has opined that the federal government should make pidgin English the country’s first language.
The crooner took to his Twitter page to make the suggestion. He also relished the idea of a Nigerian president mounting a conference hall’s podium to address citizens with their local terminologies.
“Make pidgin Nigeria first language. It’s still English, only it has bits of local lingua. It is spoken in maybe every state in the country,” the singer wrote in a mixture of pidgin English.
“E go mad when presido come tv greet say ‘una good afternoon my fellow country people’Sh**ttt!.”

English has remained Nigeria’s official language since after independence while the pidgin serves as a Lingua Franca with which the country’s heterogeneous ethnic groups interact in social life.
It is widely spoken in the oil-rich Niger-Delta where its population has adopted it as a first language. It is also spoken in business, music, radio and TV, the news media, and informally across schools.

At least 14 people were killed after Hurricane Laura slammed into the southern US states of Louisiana and Texas, authorities and local media said Friday.
Louisiana’s Governor John Bel Edwards confirmed at least 10 people had died in his state, half from using carbon monoxide-producing portable generators indoors in the aftermath of the storm making landfall Thursday.
Four of the remaining deaths were caused by trees falling on people’s homes, according to Edwards, while a man drowned after his boat sank in the storm.
There were 464,813 customers without power in Louisiana on Friday, according to the site Poweroutage.us.

Texas ended up being spared the brunt of the hurricane, which has since weakened significantly. Three of the state’s four deaths were also reportedly due to carbon monoxide poisoning from generators.
Those victims, all believed to be homeless, had sought shelter in a pool hall in the southeastern town of Port Arthur and carried its generator inside, according to the Beaumont Enterprise.
Local media reported Friday morning that a man died in East Texas, although it is unconfirmed that he was a direct victim of the hurricane.
The CBS affiliate for East Texas said the man was killed when a tree fell on his mobile home in Hemphill.
Earlier Friday, Haiti’s civil protection service said 31 people had died due to Hurricane Laura, which blasted the island nation as a tropical storm last weekend before turning into a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

A Bell 206-B3 helicopter that crashed on Salvation Road, Opebi, in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, on Friday, has no black box, the Accident Investigation Bureau has said.
AIB, the investigating body in charge of all aviation-related accidents and incidents in Nigeria, however, noted that investigation has since commenced without the black box.
According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the United Nations specialised agency for global aviation regulation, black boxes, also known as flight recorders, are one of the most relied upon resources for the improvement of aviation safety. Audio recordings from cockpit voice recorders are valuable for post-accident safety analysis, especially to know what transpired on the aircraft (mostly the pilots’ last conversation) prior to their accidents.
It was earlier reported that the copter with Nationality Registration Marks 5N-BQW operated by Quorum Aviation was about two minutes to reach its destination at Murtala Muhammed Airport when it crashed into a fence separating two houses at 16A, Salvation Road.

The copter had three persons aboard and while two crew members died on the spot, the survivor in a critical condition died a few hours later at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
AIB in a statement released on Friday solicited the assistance of the general public to aid its investigation to unravel circumstances which led to the crash.
“We want the public to know that we would be amenable to receiving any video clip, relevant evidence, or information any members of the public may have of the accident; that can assist us with this investigation,” the Bureau said, imploring eyewitnesses to contact it through its social media platforms.
However, speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Saturday morning, AIB General Manager, Public Affairs, Tunji Oketumbi, said, “It is not every aircraft that carries black boxes, especially helicopters, some of them have but some of them don’t have based on the manufacturer’s design. But in this case, the Bell 206-B3 helicopter did not carry any black box.
“A black box is just to show us the way and shorten the duration of investigation and narrow the process but we can still do investigation without it.
“Cockpit voice recorders document the conversation of the pilots but if we don’t have that, we still have the other components of the helicopter like the engine which will help in our investigation.”
Oketumbi added that a preliminary report on the possible cause of the crash would be released but urged the general public not to assume the cause of the accident until the report is released.

Olusegun Bamgbose, National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, has told those calling for the probe of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, to stop wasting their time.
According to Bamgbose, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari cannot investigate Tinubu.
Recall that recently, thousands of Nigerians led Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, signed a petition on social media, calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate and probe Tinubu in respect of his use of Bullion van during the 2019 general election.
Bangbose said the move was an effort in futility.

The petitioners are accusing Tinubu of contravening the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2011, by having bullion vans ferry alleged large sums of money into his house on the eve of the 2019 Presidential election.
It will be recalled that on the eve of the 2019 Presidential elections, drone imagery showed bullion vans ferrying suspected monies into the former Lagos Governor’s Bourdilon residence.
And speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Tinubu, a former Senator, was asked “if the bullion vans ferried money or ballots”, the APC National Leader replied “Is it my money or government money? I don’t work for the government, even if I have money to spend in my premises, what’s your headache?”
And Bamgbose noted that as far as the APC government is concerned, Tinubu is a sacred cow and is certainly above being probed or prosecuted by the highly dreaded EFCC.
“You can take this to the bank. It should be noted that several groups had in the last one year submitted petitions to EFCC, demanding Tinubu’s probe, all to no avail,” he said in a chat with newsmen on Saturday.
“When it comes to probe and/or prosecution, Tinubu is above it, as far as the APC Government is concerned. Come to think of it, Tinubu possibly used the money to prosecute the Presidential election, of which Buhari might be the beneficiary.
“It’s only God that can probe or prosecute Tinubu. Reno Omokri should not waste his resources to embark on an impossible and unrealistic venture.
“It’s only a day dreamer that will envisage that EFCC will probe or prosecute Tinubu under the APC government. It’s a joke of the century. It won’t happen. The APC government is practicing selective justice.
“When Ganjude, Kano State Governor was caught on camera with dollars, was EFCC able to probe or prosecute him? The answer is obvious.
“My happiness is that God is never a respecter of personalities. He remains the ultimate judge. Reno should just forget his impossible mission. Bola Tinubu is untouchable.”

Big Brother Naija Lockdown housemates, Erica and Laycon were caught on camera last night hugging passionately and sharing kisses.
This happened just a few hours after Kiddwaya and Erica, long term partners in the house, broke up.
Laycon was heard telling Erica, “I’m sorry.”
When she asked why he was sorry, he replied, “I don’t know but I’m sorry,” as they continued holding each other tightly.

Laycon had always expressed his love for Erica and sees himself as the best man for her.
People thought he had given up what was seen as a wild goose chase before now, but it seems hopes have returned following yesterday’s development.
Recall that Erica had recently berated Laycon for gossiping about her with the others.
This was after Laycon was pained by Erica’s rejection as the Abia-born female housemate picked Kiddwaya over him.
Erica had once made it clear that while she is mentally attracted to Laycon, she is physically attracted to her lover, Kiddwaya.

Actor Chadwick Boseman, who found fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel cinematic universe, died Friday of cancer, his representative said. He was 43.
Boseman died at his home in the Los Angeles area with his wife and family by his side, his publicist Nicki Fioravante told newsmen.
Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, his family said in a statement.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said in the statement. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more- all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

Popular Nigerian singer and actress, Seyi Shay has shared her recent encounter in a fatal accident in Lagos.
According to Shay, a truck driven by a short, tiny, nine-year-old boy crushed her brand new Range Rover and it was by luck that she escaped death.
Sharing the incident in an Instagram live, she said “So guess what, I was coming from Sound Sultan’s house the other day, my driver was driving, thank God, that is how a container truck just smashed the whole side of my new car, I was so angry, I couldn’t believe it.

Actually, the container had a direct impact on a corolla. That corolla now hit my car. That’s how my car now flew from one side of the freaking freeway to the other side. I literally saw everything take place in front of my eyes, there was one passerby that was just walking o.. maybe to work God knows, that’s how my car hit him, the guy just flew up landed down and was screaming that! His legs, his legs… Hey come and see the car that the trailer hit directly, that car was a complete write-off, ‘right off ni motor yen’….I was so scared I was shaking, it took me a few minutes to get down from the car, my driver came down, he ran to the trailer and the car that was written off, I came out of the car and went to the old man that was hit by my car because the lorry had pushed my car into him, he was on the floor talking about he’s legs were broken and that is how I started crying, I couldn’t believe it and I was like what I have done, that is how we ended up in the police station, this was like 7 am I was in the police station till 11:30 am and if you see the driver of the trailer, I think he was 9 years old, he was so short, skinny and small I couldn’t believe that something so tiny was driving a big trailer like that what is wrong with Nigerians? First of all the guy didn’t have a license, he didn’t have any identity card, these people didn’t even have insurance…Hey God! Sitting in that police station for almost 5 hours ehhn, hmmm Thank God the car still moves, but the whole side of the car dented, bumper fell off, new car o brand new range o. Anyways that is how the car is now in the mechanic workshop so the owner of the trailer came one baba like this he apologized, the little 9-year-old boy said he was 23 years old, they said what is your name he said Ayo Eze, the guy sha he was just chatting shit so anyway that’s how they took him, locked him up in a cell, we waited three more hours, his employer came, family, you know he actually paid for damages and repairs to my car and we left, thank God for life, thank God the impact wasn’t directly on my car because, God knows maybe I wouldn’t be talking to you right now but it was just very scary, I called everybody but las las the case is now closed”, said Seyi Shay.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, says the Federal Government will support the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC), to meet international standards in researches into the development of a vaccine for the Coronavirus.
Ehanire said this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 joint briefing on Thursday in Abuja.
He said the government would support NAFDAC to reach international maturity level and encourage researchers to work towards the development of vaccines for the virus.
Ehanire said Nigeria participated in a World Health Organisation (WHO), African Regional Conference, held virtually and chaired by the Minister of Health of the Congo.

He said the conference was centered on COVID-19, adding that conversation were on vaccines and implementing the African Region sickle cell strategy.
“We shall sustain our interest in developments around COVID-19 and seek opportunities to exchange ideas with countries and organisations investing in new knowledge.
NAFDAC is also trying to reach the maturity level to assure that the product and processes that come out of research work in Nigeria towards the development of vaccine candidates are realizable and that they meet the required standard
“The onus lies not only with the Ministry of Health, but is a shared responsibility with the populace.
“Our safest, easiest and cheapest option of achieving a balance between saving livelihood and saving lives remains adherence to non-pharmaceutical measures, as we have preached so many times. With these measures, we can balance and uphold our indices, even as we reopen our economy.”
The minister, however, urged Nigerians not to relax in observing the COVID-19 preventive measures, saying that the virus would still remain for the foreseeable future, till there was a vaccine available for it.
With the imperative to reopen the economy, relax local and international air travel to support restoration of livelihoods, the minister noted that the experience in other countries was that COVID-19 infection rates have gone up and in some cases, dramatically.
Ehanire, therefore, said Nigerians must strive not to lose its attention to preserve lives or lose the gains it has made over the months.
He also said that training and retraining on infection prevention and control was ongoing in all health facilities as well as ensuring availability of PPE as an investment, to continue the reduction in health worker infections.
Ehanire called on health workers to ensure judicious and prudent use of PPE materials, while observing full Information Prevention Control (IPC), measures.
The minister recalled that Nigeria, was on Aug. 25, declared poliovirus free, he therefore, said all material and human resource assets from polio eradication would be deployed to surveillance and fighting other disease outbreaks, including the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday warned that he would use the rule of law to ensure that any Fulani herdsman who dared to come to the state for vigilante group was jailed.
Recall that the Fulani organisation, Miyeitti Allah Kauta Hore, had at a press conference in Abuja recently, vowed  to establish vigilante group in all  states of federation to combat insecurity.
In his  response to this, Ortom through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, warned the Fulani organisation not to come to his state, adding that their motive was to carry their heinous activities to another level.
The association, while also reacting to the statement, threatened to drag the governor and Benue State to court unless he retracted the statement

But Ortom, while speaking with journalists on Thursday, said, “No Fulani group will come to Benue State where I’m the governor; you people know that it is a lie, they cannot come.
“No room for vigilante group in whatever kind. When I confronted them, they said they would not use vigilante group of Nigeria. That one will not operate here.
“We have our own vigilante that operates here; we have community policing in which we are recruiting now and livestock guard that take care of herdsmen in active support with security men.
“So no single vigilante group of Miyeitti Allah will come to Benue State to make any noise here. For us in Benue State, we believe in the rule of law an we will jail them.”

The body of a yet-to-be-identified man has been recovered by men of the Lagos State Police Command by the rail line in the Ijora-Badia area of the state.
Passers-by in the area saw the man lying motionless beside the rail line.
It was learnt that security agents, including neighbourhood guards and policemen attached to the Ijora Badia Police Division, were contacted to rescue the man.
It was gathered that as the policemen were about to take the man to hospital, they found a container of an insecticide by his side.

This discovery was said to have aroused the suspicion that the man might have consumed the substance in the container.
The victim, who was rushed to hospital for urgent treatment, was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said some good Samaritans rushed the victim to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, adding that the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.
Elkana said, “On August 1, 2020, around 9am, we received a piece of information that a male adult with no means of identification was found lying unconscious by the rail line in Ijora-Badia; an insecticide container was found on him, hence it was suspected that he fell into unconsciousness after consuming the substance in the container.
“He was immediately rushed by sympathisers to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His corpse has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy; further developments will be communicated.”
Meanwhile, two suspected traffic robbers, Ishola Taye and Adebayo Oluwafemi, have been arrested by policemen attached to the Ilupeju Division of the command for allegedly terrorising the Onipanu and Anthony areas of the state.
It was gathered that Ishola was attempting to dispossess passengers in a commercial vehicle of their valuables at the Onipanu bus stop when policemen on routine patrol accosted him.
Elkana said a fake pistol used for the operation was recovered from Ishola, adding that the suspect would be charged.
He stated, “On August 14, 2020, around 7.50am, while on routine patrol on the Ikorodu Road, around Fadeyi, a team of anti-crime patrol personnel led by ASP Aludo Patrick accosted one Ishola Taye, 24, who attempted to dispossess a passenger of her valuables at the Onipanu bus stop; the suspect took to his heels and was later caught.
“During a search, one toy Beretta pistol designed like a normal pistol was recovered. The suspect confessed to the crime.”
Oluwafemi was similarly arrested while robbing a passenger of her phone at the Anthony bus stop on the Ikorodu Road.
“Both Ishola and Oluwafemi have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and will be charged for the crime. They are among the notorious criminals terrorising users of the road,” Elkana stated.

The Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria, CPN, has put forward some recommendations to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on the adoption of the 5th Generation (5G) network in the country.
CPN made the recommendations after its virtual ‘CPN IT Professionals Assembly’ held recently with the theme: “Adoption of 5G in Nigeria: The Technological and Regulatory Challenges.”
The annual CPN Information Technology Professionals’ Assembly is a yearly gathering of Information Technology practitioners in Nigeria and Diaspora with the objective of discussing and strategizing on emergent issues in Information Technology in order to come out with recommendations and decisions that will impact positively on the industry and the nation.
The theme of this year’s event, according to CPN, was carefully selected to address all the misgivings, misinterpretations and misconceptions surrounding the issue of adoption and deployment of 5G network in Nigeria.

The Keynote was delivered by Engr. Deus Uche Osuji, General Manager, Network Services at MTN Nigeria.
Some of the recommendations made by the CPN, as forwarded to newsmen on Thursday, include:
“The deployment of 5G in Nigeria is capable of fast tracking our economic growth and migrating us fully into a digital economy.
“Deployment of 5G in Nigeria has numerous advantages which include faster internet connection, smoother user experience and huge deployment of Information Technology to drive growth and development of industries.
“CPN is now recommending the adoption of 5G network to Government at all levels because Nigeria will derive huge socio-economic benefits from commercial deployment of the fifth generation (5G) networks. The new networks will come with great potentials that will boost the entire spectrum of Nigeria’s socio economic ecosystem.
“Adoption of 5G network in Nigeria will bring about transformation in the country in the area of smart city, smart transportation, efficiency in medicine as well as a lot of automation in respect of our appliances and devices with respect to Internet of Things (IoT).
“The country will also benefit immensely from the adoption of the network in terms of faster speed, high latency and high capacity that will transform consumer and business experiences because the difference between all other existing generations of technologies such as 2G, 3G and 4G lies in speed and data capacity.
“Provision of good and adequate supply of power will enable the citizenry to enjoy the benefits of 5G network and derive huge socio-economic benefits from commercial deployment of the fifth generation (5G) networks. Therefore, there is need for the Federal Government to intensify its efforts in addressing the power challenges in the country.
“The Federal Government is hereby enjoined to ensure that the cost of 5G compatible devices is affordable to Nigerian so that the citizens can benefit from the new technology
“The Federal Government of Nigeria should declare Information Technology and Telecommunications as a critical national infrastructure to facilitate the success of the national broadband strategy
“Governments at various levels should also intensify their efforts to embrace Information Technology with its attendant potentials of facilitating governance and eradicating corruption in the country
“The complete adoption of Information Technology, as well as migration of Government operations from manual to digital, will make the country to conform with the benchmark of Government operations in the 21st century
In conclusion, at the end of the meeting, members of the profession present during showered accolades and encomium on the President/Chairman-in-Council and all members of CPN Council for holding a successful assembly despite the challenges posed by the Corona Virus pandemic.
“The Council has delivered on its mandate to convoke a world-class Virtual IT Professionals’ Assembly worthy of emulation by other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).”

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said the state has passed the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was revealed by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.
The Commissioner however warned that the state could witness a surge in cases if Lagosians lose guard.
Abayomi spoke on Wednesday during a monitored talk show on Nigeria Info 99.3FM, themed, ‘Fighting COVID-19 in Lagos’.

He said, “Lagos might be a its peak in the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s not over yet as we may see an escalation of positive cases. However, until we see a decline in the number of positive cases, we shouldn’t relent.
“We believe the lockdown was not effective because of the reality of a city where people go out to fend for themselves on a daily basis. If not, you will replace a health crisis with an economic crisis.
“Concerning the number of positive results seen this period, we have sample collection centres in every local government in Lagos, so the more we test the more cases we find. If there are no more positives, then the outbreak is slowing down.
“Our observation is that Lagos has passed the worst of the pandemic; it has passed the peak of the pandemic and is now on the flattening stage and over time, we will experience a down slope of the virus, then the end of COVID-19.
The commissioner on August 24 tested positive for the virus and has been receiving treatment in isolation since then.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Dibal Yakadi, has assured all stakeholders in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election that officers and men of the police will work with them to ensure a credible election come September 19.
Yakadi gave the assurance during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Imaguro High School, Benin, on Wednesday.
According to him, the meeting was convened to work out modalities on how best the police working with sister security agencies can work towards creating a peaceful atmosphere for the election.
He said, “The role of the Independent Electoral Commission is to be fair to all political parties during the election. Parties and their supporters must eschew violence, while the religious and community leaders must sensitise their congregation and subjects on good conduct during the election.”

The police boss charged members of the National Youth Service Corps engaged as INEC ad hoc staff to avoid the temptation of colluding with political party representatives to perpetrate electoral fraud.
He also enjoined security agencies to be professional by ensuring neutrality throughout the period just as he appealed to political parties to educate their supporters on the need to conduct themselves appropriately. Party representatives who also spoke during the event appealed to security agencies to be fair to all.

Barcelona are working to convince captain, Lionel Messi, to stay at the club after the 33-year-old’s shock request to leave the Camp Nou.
Messi surprised Barcelona on Tuesday night, when he asked for his contract, which has a year still to run, to be terminated under an end-of-season release clause.
His intention came after Ronald Koeman’s appointment as Quique Setien’s successor last week, following a disappointing season which ended with an 8-2 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.
However, speaking as the club unveiled €31m new signing, Francisco Trincao, on Wednesday, sporting director Ramon Planes told reporters that Barcelona are putting every effort into ensuring that the relationship between the club and Messi will continue.

Planes said: “This is evidently the important news.
“As we have said many times, as Koeman and the president have said and my position as technical secretary, we count on Messi for the future, just as we count on Trincao as a talent of the future, and we have heard that he’ll play alongside the greatest player in the history, the greatest player in the world.

“What has happened has happened, and our idea is to build a team around the most important player in the world.

National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, Olusegun Bamgbose, has claimed that former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode was under a spiritual attack when he verbally assaulted Eyo Charles, a reporter with Daily Trust in Calabar, Cross River State.
Bamgbose also pleaded with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Nigerians in general to forgive the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP chieftain.
Recall that Fani-Kayode had verbally attacked Eyo for asking him a perceived insulting question during a press conference.
Charles had asked the former minister ‘who was bankrolling his recent trips around Nigeria’, to which FFK flared up and rained insults on the journalist.

Giving reasons for his action, Fani-Kayode claimed the reporter was a front for his political enemies who were out to embarrass him.
His action was, however, condemned by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, which described the ex-Minister’s response as gangster-like.
But Bamgbose, a legal practitioner cum politician, said there was more than meets the eye in the verbal attack of Daily Trust correspondent, by Fani Kayode.
“I doubt if Fani Kayode had ever in his political history, intimidated any journalist. He is well known to be a very good friend of the Press,” Bamgbose said in a chat with newsmen on Thursday.
“He could attack political office holders, if they err, but this presumably will be the first time, he will verbally attack a journalist. It’s really an unfortunate situation.
“The truth of the matter is that, many don’t seem to understand what may be going on behind the scene. Some politicians actually may not be comfortable with the rising profile of Femi Fani- Kayode.
“He has been on project monitoring tours and had visited about six States in Nigeria. This is a good development. Some have speculated that he possibly have presidential ambition, this may not be far from the truth.
“He remains one of the most prominent Yoruba man, still with the PDP. There could be that possibility that if PDP decides to favour the South West, he might be considered.
“His tours could be a way of preparing himself for the battle ahead. However unknown to FFK, some may not be comfortable with that. I strongly suspect that he was spiritually manipulated to ‘misbehave.’
“I urge the NUJ and Nigerians to forgive him. It’s never a crime for him to aspire to be President, the more the merrier. He is a lawyer like me, and he is qualified to contest if he so wishes. He is welcome on board,” he said.

Big Brother Naija lockdown housemate, Erica, has blasted Lucy over her performance during the Wednesday Pepsi Challenge.
Lucy and Erica’s lover, Kiddwaya were in the same Team Cuppy and delivered the song ‘Green Light’ for the challenge.
While Kiddwaya did everything to ensure victory for the group, Lucy happened to have forgotten her lines of the song they practiced.
Erica wondered why Lucy spent all her time complaining about her teammate, Kiddwaya to the other housemates but ended forgetting lyrics of the song on stage.

She said Lucy is fond of making others feel bad all in the name of speaking her mind.
Discussing with Tolanibaj about the incident, obviously angry, Erica said, “That was very rude of her [Lucy]. What kind of stuff is that? It doesn’t make sense.
“She wasted all the time complaining about Kidd… shouting, ‘have you seen me dancing? Have you seen me singing before? And after everything she didn’t even sing sh*t on stage…
“How can she spend hours complaining about Kidd? That was very rude of her and went on stage and messed up.
“I told her [this face to face]. Is she going to beat me? You know me now, I always say my mind.
“She spent hours making another person feel bad, then went there and messed up. All the time she should have used to practice, she used it to complain about Kidd throughout.
“And when she started crying after the performance, I was like, ‘why are you being dramatic?’
“If she put in that much time [she used in complaining in practice], won’t she go there and do something good?
“If I were in a group like that and someone kept complaining about me openly to everybody that was so rude and I can [also] easily start pointing out all the flaws in front of everybody.
“She does that all the time and would be like ‘oh, I’m just saying the truth. I’m just saying my mind’, without considering how bad you make other people feel.
“The thing is Kidd is like, ‘I’m not bothered’ but I know he’s bothered but just doesn’t want to make it a big deal. Me, I’ll make it a big deal…I don’t care. Are you going to beat me?”

Twenty students currently writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bayelsa State.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health Dr. Inodu Apoku stated this during a meeting of COVID-19 Task Force at Government House, Yenagoa.

According to Apoku, the 20 positive cases were among 600 candidates writing the examinations in the state that were screened.
But, WAEC has called on candidates infected with the COVID-19 writing the examinations not to panic, saying “the virus is not a death sentence”.
Its Head, Mr. Patrick Areghan, who stated this on Wednesday at the end of a monitoring visit to the Federal Government Boys College, Apo, Abuja, said no student infected with COVID-19 would miss the examinations.
“I want to assure you and the Nigerians that anywhere we have COVID-19 candidate, we make sure that he or she writes the examinations. It is not a death sentence, there is no stigma
“We don’t want anybody to miss the exams. It’s no fault of theirs. We can defeat this disease provided we take first-line responsibility,” he said.
The WAEC Head of National Office in Nigeria said the council had been collaborating with various states’ ministries of education to look out for candidates infected with the virus.
According to him, when it happens, the ministry of education and the ministry of health in the state will have to come together and get a medical expert that will conduct the exam for the candidate.
Areghan said such a candidate would write the examinations in the isolation centre.
He added that the council would thereafter go to the isolation centre and collect the script, which would be put in a special bank designated for the purpose.
“Yesterday, we heard stories about some candidates contracting the disease in one state. We quickly got in touch with our officer and he said he was not aware.
“We ask him to get in touch with the commission and the commission said there was nothing like that.
“Yes we are aware that in Gombe, there was one candidate who wrote the examinations for about two days or so and I learnt that the candidate had been discharged from the isolation centre,” he said.
According to him, the council also heard about one in Kwara and in Bayelsa. They also carried out massive testing before the commencement of the examination.
“The results have just come out and that the candidates infected have been isolated and we are conducting the examination for them.
“I want to assure you and Nigerians that anywhere we have COVID-19 candidate, we make sure that he or she writes the examination. It is not a death sentence, there is no stigma,” he said.
On alleged leaked examinations papers, Areghan denied the rumours saying there was no element of truth in it.
However, the Bayelsa State Permanent Secretary said the total number of COVID-19 test samples in the state from the inception of the outbreak to date was 10,234, laboratory-confirmed cases (370), number of active cases (24) and total number of deaths was put at 21.
Also, Governor Douye Diri has directed civil servants from grade levels 1-12 to resume work from Tuesday, September 1.
Diri gave the directive on Wednesday during a meeting with the state’s COVID-19 Taskforce in Government House, Yenagoa.

The Federal Government has approved N10 billion as a palliative for transport workers and operators.
Minister of State for Transportation Senate Gbemisola Saraki said the fund would help cushion the sufferings encountered by road transport workers and operators as a result of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also noted that the fund is currently domiciled with the Federal Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, adding that her ministry is working on the modalities for its disbursement.
The minister spoke when the President of Public Transport Owners of Nigeria Association (PTONA), Isaac Uhunwagho, an engineer and the association’s National Executive Committee and Trustees visited him in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Press, Eric Ojiekwe, Saraki stated that 90 per cent of Nigerians travel by road, adding that the Federal Government would soon initiate a master plan that would reform the sector.
On the challenges operators face from state governments and other stakeholders, she assured that she would discuss the issues through the National Transport Commissioners’ Forum.
The minister also revealed that she is in talks with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on the concessioning of some routes with the aim of increasing the government’s revenue.
She urged the delegation to avoid duplicity and formalise their structures in an organised manner for better engagements with the ministry and other relevant agencies.
Uhunwagho had earlier pleaded for COVID-19 financial palliatives for the association’s members to prevent their businesses from folding up.
He explained that members were the worst hit during the lockdown introduced by the Federal Government.

A Nigerian-born Canadian, Kaycee Madu, has been appointed as the justice minister and solicitor general of Alberta, a province in Canada.
Premier Jason Kenney on Tuesday elevated Madu to the justice portfolio from Municipal Affairs in a cabinet shuffle that makes him the first Black man to occupy either Provincial or Federal Justice positions of the Justice Minister, Attorney General or Solicitor General.

Madu was born and raised in Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Lagos with a law degree in 2001.
He and his wife moved to Canada in 2005.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Madu was a member of the legislative assembly of the province representing the district of Edmonton-South West after winning the 2019 Alberta general election.
On April 30, 2019, he was appointed to the Executive Council of Alberta as the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
Mr Madu, a member of the United Conservative Party, is the first Nigerian-born cabinet member in Alberta.
Speaking on Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney said the appointment of Madu makes a powerful statement at a time when Albertans have grown more sensitive to racial prejudice.
He said: “[Madu] is a man who has experienced racial prejudice firsthand and can bring that sensitivity to this important role,” Kenney said. “I’m excited to have him in that position.”
Speaking on his appointment, Madu promised to serve with fairness and equality for all.
He said: “Thank you, everyone, for all the well wishes. I am beyond humbled to accept my new role as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General – where I will pursue fairness, equality, and justice for all with every ounce of strength I have.”

Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases plunge further on Wednesday, with Lagos, the once epicentre of the virus recording an all time low.
It seems Plateau State has taken over from Lagos as the new epicentre of COVID-19 having led the infection chat for the second day running.

The 221 fresh cases announced by the NCDC for the nation on Wednesday. Plateau’s 60 new cases is higher than the 50 cases it recorded on Tuesday.
Lagos recorded 17 new infections on Wednesday, the lowest it has recorded in over four months.
On Tuesday, Lagos recorded 26 cases, which has further dropped to 17.
However, the nation’s 221 new COVID-19 cases represent a drop from the 252 cases it raked in on Tuesday.
This has now taking the nation’s total confirmed COVID-19 cases to 53,021, with 40,281 survivors discharged and 1,010 deaths recorded.
Today’s new cases were recorded in 20 states.

John Obi Mikel scored his first Stoke City goal in their 5-1 hammering of Shrewsbury Town in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly match.
Mikel who joined the Potters on a free transfer earlier this month, made his first start for Stoke City at the club’s Clayton Wood training ground.
The 33-year-old restored the hosts’ lead just before the break after Oakley-Boothe’s opener was cancelled out by Shrewsbury Town.
Mikel was in action for 45 minutes before he was replaced by Tom Ince while DR Congo’s Benik Afobe was introduced for Lee Gregory, nine minutes after the hour-mark, Goal reports.

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has warned the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to shelve any ambition he may be nursing for the 2023 presidency and rather focus on his health.
Although the APC leader has not made his intentions for 2023 public, there are wide speculations that he is warming up to replace President Muhammadu Buhari when his tenure expires in three years time.
Primate Ayodele warned that Tinubu should focus and pray for his health not to crumble before 2023.
Primate Ayodele, who earlier prophesied that Tinubu will be betrayed by the presidency further noted that Buhari won’t give enough support to the ex-Lagos Governor to realise his presidential ambition.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 11,785,800 tramadol tablets in Lagos.
They were packed in a total of 607 cartons.
Head of Public Affairs, Jonah Achema, made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.
It quoted the Chairman, Muhammad Abdallah, as saying the interception was with the assistance and cooperation of the Customs Area Command, Apapa.

“This was discovered in another container number TCNU 9465832 belonging to the same suspect transferred to NDLEA by the Police.
“This is making it 3 containers used to carefully conceal illegally imported tramadol and other medicines to Nigeria,” he said.
He said recent discovery of more tramadol using the same route from Pakistan Asia – Hamburg, Europe – Nigeria showed the system of operation by the drug cartel to beat security operatives.
NAN reports that Police detectives in Apapa Area Command intercepted a 40-foot container laden with drugs suspected to be tramadol and codeine on August 6.
During investigation, another 40 foot container discovered had 255 cartons of different types of tramadol and other banned medicines on August 19.

A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has apologised for referring to a journalist, Eyo Charles, as “stupid”.
Fani-Kayode said this in a statement on Wednesday.
He said, “I met with my advisors till late last night and I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word ‘stupid’ which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar. I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so.”
The former minister, however, denied allegations that he was threatening to harm the Daily Trust reporter.

“I do, however, wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.
“I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression,” he said.
Fani-Kayode said he remained a friend of the media and would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honourable and noble within its ranks.
The former minister had come under heavy criticism for calling the reporter ‘stupid’ during a press conference in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

However, the former minister, who was infuriated by the question, said the journalist was stupid.
He said, “I am saying this on live TV. What type of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you are talking to? I will not take any questions from this man. What type of insulting question is that? Which bankroll? To do what? Who can give me money for anything? Who do you think you are talking to? Go and report yourself to your publisher? Please don’t insult me here. I don’t want to take any questions from this man.
“I could see from your face before you got here, how stupid you are. Don’t ever talk to me like that. Who do you think you’re talking to? Bankroll who? You think I am one of those ones you… from who, when, how? You have a small mind, very small mind. Don’t judge me by your own standards.”
The Nigeria Union of Journalists had condemned the former minister while the management of Daily Trust had threatened to report to the police if any harm came to its reporter.

Gunmen have reportedly invaded a school in Kunai Ward in Damba Kasaya of Chikun Local government area of Kaduna State, killing one person and abducting dozens of JSS3 students.
A villager Bawa Wakili disclosed that the hoodlums stormed the village and started shooting sporadically; and eventually kidnapped some villagers.
He said they went to Prince Academy school, Damba – Kasaya at about 7:45 am while the students were trying to sit for the JSS exams.
The marauders abducted dozens of students who have gathered to write the Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE).

He also said a Church Aminchi Baptist Church Damba-Kasaya was set ablaze by the gunmen.
Recall that the Federal government had only recently reopened schools across the country to enable graduating students in secondary schools to sit for their final exams.
It was gathered the students of JSS3 in Kaduna have been writing their exams in the last week.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammad Jalige said the police are yet to be briefed. He, however, promised to get back as soon as the police are briefed.

PDP Caucus  in the House of Representatives has threatened to go to court over what it described as breached relating to the federal government’s Special Works Project designed to provide 774,000 jobs in the country.
The caucus had a few weeks ago, rejected the allocation of only 25 slot to members of the House of representatives, against the 30 slots allocated senators; 30 slot to ministers and 40 slots to governors in the 1,000 slots allotted each of the 774 local government areas in the country.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Kingsley Chinda (PDP-Rivers), the caucus warned its members to ignore the letters written to senators and House of Representatives members by APC State Coordinators of the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, on behalf of the Minister of State (Labour and Employment), Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, asking for nomination of  30 and 25 individuals respectively from each Local Government Area in their constituency.
The statement read:  “The Caucus   considers this correspondence a condemnable attempt to bribe and hoodwink the institution of the National Assembly into complicity in the misapplication of Nigeria’s scarce resources for the implementation of a questionable, misguided, absurd and arguably unlawful scheme that alarmingly intends to expend N52 billion under the guise of creating employment for only three months.

“This regrettably is the most unsustainable employment scheme implemented by any government.
“While the caucus espouses the eradication of poverty and the creation of gainful and sustainable employment for the burgeoning population of unemployed Nigerians under this administration, it flies in the face of reason and common sense why this government insists on expending enormous resources for the implementation of a politically motivated transient programme, dubiously shrouded as ‘employment,’ having no empowering or enduring benefit to ordinary Nigerians, especially when several viable and veritable job and wealth-creating alternatives exist for application of the funds.
“Elementary division of the approved programme budget of N52billion by 774 LGA’S in Nigeria implies expenditure of N67.184million (about $150,000) in each LGA of Nigeria which if applied judiciously and transparently, will suffice for the establishment of a viable industry in each LGA, which for several years to come will provide gainful, enduring and sustainable direct and indirect employment for more than 100 skilled and unskilled poor unemployed Nigerians per LGA and provide an invaluable opportunity for future growth, skill acquisition and economic development.
“New International Labour Organization, ILO data reveals that Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMES, account for a staggering 70% of employment worldwide, as they constitute more than 90% of enterprises in all developing countries of the world and in addition to creating employment, they are the engines of economic growth and social development contributing up to 70% of the GDP of all countries in the world (ILO 2019).”
“In his May 28, 2020 speech, the Minister of State’s reference to provisions of Section 16(1) as justifying his creation of Special Committees known as State Selection Committees across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT is flawed and at variance with that provision of the Act which indicates the substantive minister can from time to time constitute a Special Committee of the Directorate and not special committees.
“Considering the cost implication of the creation of this Special Committee as stipulated in Section 16(2) of the Act which allows the NDE Board to prescribe allowances payable to organizations.”

Paris Saint Germain have asked the French League to once more postpone what would be their first match of the French season, a source told AFP on Monday.
Ligue 1 started last Friday, but PSG’s opening game against Metz was postponed because the French champions were in Lisbon where they played their first Champions League final on Sunday. They lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich and flew back to Paris on Monday.

Usain Bolt was in quarantine on Monday as Jamaican media reported the sprint legend had tested positive for the coronavirus, just days after he celebrated his 34th birthday with a lavish party.
The retired 100m and 200m world-record holder didn’t confirm his test result, but he urged anyone who had been in contact with him to go into quarantine.
“I did a test on Saturday to leave (Jamaica) because I have work,” Bolt said in a video posted on Twitter. “I am trying to be responsible so I am going to stay in and be safe.
“Also, I am having no symptoms, I will quarantine myself and wait on the confirmation to see what is the protocol and to see how I go about quarantining myself from the Ministry of Health.

“Until then, I will call my friends and tell them once they came in contact with me to be safe, quarantine and take it easy,” said Bolt.
According to the Jamaica Observer, health and wellness minister Christopher Tufton confirmed late on Monday that the eight-time Olympic champion had tested positive.

A clergyman based in Ogun State, David Bamgbose has faulted the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Bamgbose warned that the amended Act was capable of inflaming religious war in Nigeria.
Buhari had on August 7, 2020, signed the amended CAMA Act into law. 
The law has, however, received condemnation from some clergymen in the country.

Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church and the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, had condemned the act which was described as satanic and ungodly legislation aimed against the church.
However, Bamgbose while addressing journalists in Abeokuta, yesterday, insisted that the law is an infringement on the rights of Christians.
“Religious war will be too catastrophic. It is unthinkable. I advise that whatever is the agenda of this government, it should step back on the issue of religion.
“It is the most sensitive. A good student of history will not do what the government is doing.
“People can die because of their religious belief. I, Bamgbose speaking, am ready for anything.
“I am saying my religion is my life. And that’s how most people feel about religion,” he said.

The 18 newly elected local government council chairmen in Ondo state will be sworn this morning by the state governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
All the chairmen were elected under the platform of the All Progressive Congress in the election held last Saturday across the state.
The chairman of the State Independence Electoral Commission ODIEC, Prof Yomi Dinakin, said that the ruling APC won in the councils which include Akoko North-East, Akoko South-East, Ose, Owo, Akure South, Akure North and Ifedore.
Others are Odigbo, Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo, Ilaje, Okitipupa, Irele, Ese Odo, Ondo West, Idanre, Ondo East, Akoko North-West and Akoko South-West.

The party’s chairmanship candidates in five councils were elected unopposed according to the ODIEC chairman
The councils include, Akoko North East, Ose, Ifedore, Odigbo and lrele.
Dinakin also said that the party also won 194 councillorship seats out of 198, while the results in the four remaining wards were declared inconclusive
Meanwhile, the Akeredolu in a statement in Akure said the newly elected council chairmen would be sworn at the International Cultural and Events Centre The Dome on Igbatoro road Akure this morning (Monday).
The statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Segun Ajiboye enjoins the chairmen and their guests to be seated in the hall by 8 am.

Paris Saint-Germain forwards, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, have reacted to their team’s Champions League final 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday night.
PSG missed chances in both halves, as their former youth graduate Kingsley Coman who left the French Ligue 1 champions in 2014, headed the winner just before the hour mark in Portugal.
Reacting, Neymar and Mbappe took to their Twitter handles to congratulate Bayern Munich after they defeated Thomas Tuchel’s side.
“Losing is part of the sport, we try everything, we fight until the end,” Neymar posted on Twitter.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, made this known in a press statement on Monday.
The statement was titled ‘Press release on the positive COVID-19 Status of Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi’.

The statement read, “Subsequent to close contact with persons feeling unwell and testing positive for the COVID-19 infection, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has tested positive for the virus.
“Professor Abayomi became aware of his status following the required testing protocol of contact tracing procedures.

“However, he is doing well with no symptoms. Adhering to the protocol of the homebased strategy in Lagos State, the Honorable Commissioner will be isolating in his home for the next 14 days but will continue to discharge his duties both as the Deputy Incident Commander of the Incident Command System for COVID-19 and most especially, as the Honorable Commissioner for Health.

Nigeria’s COVID-19 deaths surpass the 1,000 mark on Sunday, with the rate of infections nose-diving.
According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Sunday, Coronavirus deaths in Nigeria stood at 1,002.

A total of 332 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, with Lagos getting 130 new cases.
The total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria now stand at 52,227, with 38,945 survivors discharged.
Lagos, which set a new record on Saturday with 404 cases, recorded 130 new infections today, representing a sharp drop.
Also, the national infection rate dropped on Sunday to 332 from the 601 cases it recorded on Saturday.
The 322 new cases were reported from 18 states.
