Detectives from the UK are currently in Nigeria to gather more evidence in the probe of Diezani Alison-Madueke, former minister of petroleum resources, who has been standing trial on allegations bordering money laundering.<br />
<br />
According to The Nation, the detectives, who met with officials the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have been in the country for a week in what appeared a final lap of the investigation.<br />
<br />
“It is a major case the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK has been collaborating with the EFCC to probe,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.<br />
<br />
“A few weeks ago, EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, was also in London to compare notes with similar agencies on this case. You will recall that Magu in November 2018 made it clear that Nigeria was tired of waiting for the trial of Diezani by the UK.<br />

“But after the initial issues between EFCC and UK agencies, there were talks which revealed that those at the London end were making painstaking investigations.<br />
<br />
“After Magu’s visit to London, the investigation of Diezani assumed enhanced dimension because some grey areas were cleared.<br />
<br />
“The coming of the detectives from London was meant to fill some gaps, get additional evidence and crosscheck a few findings on their part.”<br />
<br />
The source added that the mutual assistance in criminal matters bill, 2019, signed into law recently by President Muhammadu Buhari, might help in confiscating Diezani’s assets at home and abroad.<br />
<br />
“The new law will certainly assist the EFCC and other security agencies in bringing some of these looters to justice,” the source said, adding that the law will hasten EFCC’s action on Diezani and suspicious assets traced to her.<br />
<br />
In November, the EFCC had started a process to extradite the former minister, and the following month, the international police issued an arrest warrant for her following a request by the federal government.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed terrorists’ hideouts and killed some fighters at Gobara and Bakassi in Borno.<br />
<br />
Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, added that the operation was conducted on Friday in separate air raids.<br />
<br />
According to Daramola, the settlements were two of the targets selected for attack in the intensive air interdiction operations launched by the ATF on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
He explained that the attack on Gobara, a settlement in the Sambisa Forest area, was carried out by two Alpha Jets after Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions had identified a segment of the settlement being used by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) fighters to store their logistics and other equipment.<br />

“The jets scored accurate hits in the target area, leading to the destruction of some of the structures and equipment as well as the killing of several terrorists.<br />
<br />
” In a similar vein, another active camp belonging to Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements located at Bakassi on the fringes of Lake Chad in Northern Borno, was successfully attacked and several terrorists killed in air strikes carried out later in the day.<br />
<br />
”Overhead the target area, the NAF ISR platform observed significant presence of ISWAP fighters who were attempting to flee the location, upon hearing the sound of the aircraft.<br />
<br />
”The attack platforms were vectored to the area of concentration of the terrorists, unleashing their munitions on the target and causing significant damage to the camp and neutralising many terrorists,” he said.

The technical committee established to work on the consequential adjustment arising from the N30,000 new national minimum wage has again failed to reach an agreement after the representatives of the  Federal Government and labour rejected the proposed percentage increases in their meeting on Thursday.<br />

This came despite  President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise that the Federal Government was committed to the implementation of the new minimum wage while asking state governments to do the same.<br />
<br />
Thursday’s meeting ended in a deadlock after government representatives told the committee that whatever adjustment arrived at must be in line with the N168bn  provided for the adjustment in the 2019 budget.<br />
<br />
A source close to the committee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed while labour proposed 30 per cent salary increase for officers on levels seven to 14,  the Federal Government wanted nine and a half per cent salary increase for them.<br />

The source added that while labour also proposed 25 per cent additional increase for officers on grade levels 15 to 17, the Federal Government was only ready to offer five per cent.<br />
<br />
He said, “What we are pushing for is that government should adjust the minimum wage of those who are already on level one to level six to reflect the new minimum wage. Then officers on level seven to 14 should be given an additional 30 per cent of their salaries. We are also pushing that those on level 15 to level 17 should be given 25 per cent of their salaries. That will be fair enough to all and that is what we are proposing.<br />
<br />
“But government does not want to do that, technically, and that is what they are standing on.<br />
<br />
 “Government is saying that from level seven to level 14, only nine and a half per cent of their salaries  will be added while only five per cent increase in salary will be offered officers on levels 15 to 17.”<br />
<br />
The source said the meeting ended in a deadlock after both parties refused to shift grounds on their positions.<br />
<br />
He said government, by its present position, was working contrary to the terms of reference.<br />
<br />
He added, “What really happened after that was that the meeting ended in a deadlock. The term of reference even to the technical committee was to go and work the consequential adjustment based on the economic reality of today. But when the meeting got to a stage, government said the adjustment would be based on the provision for the adjustment made in the 2019 budget.<br />
<br />
“The scenario is that government is working towards a certain fixed amount and we are expected to be bound by it. What is in the budget for the minimum wage adjustment is N168bn. If we accept to work along with that line, it means that whatever calculation we are working on must arrive at that amount.<br />
<br />
“That was not our initial agreement. We were even asking the representatives of the government that they should let us know how much government is working towards so that the committee would be guided.<br />
<br />
“What government is coming up with now is not what we agreed in the terms of reference. With that, we cannot continue with the discussion. If government wants to issue circular based on that, it is free but we are not going to be party to that.”

The planned re-arraignment of a former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, before the Federal High Court in Lagos was stalled on Friday as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it had begun a new investigation on the ex-governor.<br />
<br />
The EFCC had on October 22, 2018, arraigned Fayose for an alleged fraud of N2.2bn before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun six days after he completed his tenure as governor.<br />

He was arraigned alongside his firm, Spotless Limited, on 11 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust, theft and money laundering.<br />
<br />
The prosecution had opened trial on November 19, 2018, and called 13 witnesses out of the 15 witnesses listed when the EFCC wrote a petition to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati, requesting that the case be transferred from Justice Olatoregun before it was subsequently transferred to Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke.<br />
<br />
During Friday proceedings, counsel for Fayose, Ola Olanipekun (SAN), informed the court of an application before the court seeking that the matter be returned to the former trial judge, Justice Olatoregun.<br />
<br />
Olanipekun later informed the court that the defendants had opted to withdraw the objection to the arraignment.<br />
<br />
Upon the withdrawal of the objection by the defence, counsel for EFCC, S.A Obafemi, informed the court that the arraignment of the ex-governor could not go on as he was being investigated in other matters.<br />
<br />
However, Justice Aneke upheld the prayer of the EFCC and adjourned till July 2 for re-arraignment.

President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria will continue to support the International Criminal Court (ICC) in fulfilling its mandates.<br />
<br />
The president stated this when he received the Nigerian-born President of the ICC, Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, at the State House, Abuja on Friday.<br />
<br />
Buhari appealed to developed countries to take the ICC “more seriously in order to strengthen the rule of law and democracy”.<br />
<br />
According to the Nigerian leader, the ICC provides a moral strength for victims to receive justice against internal and external injustices.<br />
<br />

He also commended Eboe-Osuji for the achievements at the ICC under his presidency.<br />
<br />
Earlier, the President of the ICC had congratulated Buhari on his re-election and successful inauguration for a second tenure.<br />

He lauded the Nigerian leader’s “strong and unambiguous statement in support of the rule of law” and for the Court and its principles during his visit to the headquarters of the ICC in The Hague last July.<br />
<br />
Eboe-Osuji appealed to Buhari to continue to support the ICC and to encourage African leaders, whose countries had not ratified the Rome Statute which established the Court, to do so.

The Electoral Institute, Abuja, said on Friday that it would use the Kogi and Bayelsa states’ governorship elections to correct all the wrongs from the lessons learnt during the 2019 general elections.<br />

Dr. Saád Idris, Director-General of the institute, said at a Policy Dialogue series tagged, “Dynamics of Delegation: Reforms in the Recruitment, Training and Deployment of Ad-hoc Election Personnel” in Abuja that Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been engaging with stakeholders since the last  elections, to know what went wrong to improve on subsequent elections.<br />
<br />
The INEC chairman, according to him, “has been making effort to address the challenges faced, so this is a part of that effort to look into the recruitment, training and deployment of ad-hoc staff during elections.<br />
<br />
“The effort of the commission is clear; it has owned up to some things that it did not do right, so beginning from the Kogi and Bayelsa elections, you will see improvement.’’<br />
<br />
Idris said that the plans to correct the electoral process had started, adding that “we are not going to wait for general elections before correcting all the wrongs.’’<br />
<br />
Idris explained that the meeting was part of the mandate to organise a policy dialogue, to engage in dialogue for reforms, recruitment, training and deployment of ad-hoc staff.<br />
<br />
He also said that the dialogue was with particular reference to what happened in 2019 elections.<br />
<br />
Earlier, Prof. Shola Omotola, Lead Speaker and lecturer, Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, called for expansion of the recruitment database of ad-hoc staff to include ex-NYSC members, to guarantee continuity.<br />
<br />
Omotola, therefore, called for training and re-training of ad-hoc staff and the need to put mechanisms in place to enable such staff to also vote on Election Day, in order not to disenfranchise them.<br />
<br />
He advised INEC to imbibe the culture of timely recruitment and training of ad-hoc staff to enable them work effectively.<br />
<br />
Omotola said that there was need to guarantee their security as well as increase their remunerations for greater performance.<br />
<br />
Mr Adedeji Soyebi, Chairman, Board of Electoral Institute, said that a lot had been learnt from the lessons shared by various stakeholders on the occasion.<br />
<br />
Soyebi said that ad-hoc staff played a critical role in the electoral process, adding that INEC could not afford to overlook such role.<br />
<br />
“So the reforms in the delegation of responsibilities would constantly be reviewed,” he said.<br />
<br />
He said that the institute would continue to improve on the electoral process in consonance with the commitment of INEC to ensure free, fair and credible elections and acceptable by all.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Benin Zonal Office secured the conviction of Isaac Christiana Nkemdirim before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State.<br />
<br />
Nkemdirim was convicted on a one count charge of obtaining by false pretence contrary to Section 15(2)(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2002 as amended and punishable under 15(3) of the same Act.<br />
<br />
The charge reads: “That you, Isaac Christiana Nkemdirim (alias Ama Christiana, Isaac Christian and one Favour Chinonso (alias Steve Obinna (at large), on or about 23rd of August, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did conceal or disguises the origin of the sum of N150,000 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) which you transferred to our Account 0775064177 domiciled in Access Bank PLC , which you knew or reasonably ought to have known that the said amount forms part of the proceeds of unlawful Act to wit: obtaining money by false pretenses and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15 (2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2012 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.”<br />
<br />
Upon her arraignment, today, June 28, 2019, Nkemdirim pleaded guilty to the charge. Based on her plea, the prosecution counsel, Fredrick O. Dibang prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.<br />

However, the defence counsel prayed the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was a first time offender and a youth who has promised never to go back to the crime.<br />
<br />
Justice M.G. Umar thereafter convicted and sentenced the defendant to eight (8) months imprisonment without an option of fine.

Yes, as a young woman who acquired fame at a young age, these phonies will want to take advantage of you all in the name of wanting to guide you spiritually.<br />

At age 22, a priest almost raped me unfortunately for him, I might have appeared naive and soften spoken boy was I raised Army strong with a warrior spirit. I told him not today and not never. I moved past that but not every woman has the same fighting spirit. Some are damaged for life while others take a different path to self-destruction because they can’t cope with the trauma they experience.<br />

Don’t be quick to condemn a woman telling her painful story of rape and defend a Pastor you know nothing about. That they stand on that pulpit does not mean they are holy.<br />
<br />
Many have the grace to minister but the flesh thrives on the power and authority they hold. Trust no pastor or priest with your wives, daughters and loved ones. Go to church listen to the gospel and go home and live according to Christ teachings. Stop worshipping your pastors. Stop venerating your priest.<br />

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission claims former Senate President Bukola Saraki withdrew N12bn in cash from the treasury of the Kwara State Government while he was governor of the state between 2003 and 2011.<br />
<br />
The money was then allegedly used by Saraki to offset a N1.36bn bank loan he used in purchasing homes located at 15, 15A, 17, 17A and four flats on Macdonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, hence the decision of the commission to seize the properties.<br />
<br />
The anti-corruption agency therefore asked Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to rescind the ex parte order preventing the commission from investigating and prosecuting Saraki.<br />
<br />
The EFCC said this in a counter-affidavit to Saraki’s originating motion with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/507/2019.<br />

However, in a counter-affidavit deposed to by Ojilibo Stanley on behalf of the EFCC, the agency said they had established a case of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and conspiracy by the immediate past Senate President.<br />
<br />
The EFCC said Saraki had through his companies between 2005 and 2006 taken loans worth N1.36bn from the Guaranty Trust Bank and Intercontinental Bank (now Access Bank).<br />
<br />
The commission said in a bid to offset the loan, the ex-governor began to divert N100m from the coffers of the state monthly.<br />
<br />
The affidavit stated that on February 28, 2005, the Presidential Implementation Committee on the sale of Federal Government Landed Properties wrote a letter conveying to Saraki the approval of then-Minister of Lands and Housing for the sale of properties at 15 and 17 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi.<br />
<br />
The EFCC said sequel to the letter Saraki wrote dated March 8, 2005, to Guaranty Trust Bank requesting a N200m loan to finance the acquisition of the properties on March 24, 2005, GTB approved the loan to partly finance the purchase of the properties.<br />
<br />
The anti-graft agency said on October 11, 2006, another personal loan of N380m was granted to Saraki by GTB to partly finance the acquisition of properties located at 17 and 17A Macdonald Road, Ikoyi.<br />
<br />
The commission further claimed that on January 30, 2007, a personal loan of N380m was again granted to the former governor to partly finance the same properties.<br />
<br />
It said on April 28, 2009, another personal loan of N400m was obtained by Saraki to develop the same properties.<br />
<br />
The affidavit stated, “The personal loans used to acquire the properties were later liquidated with the proceeds of the applicant’s (Saraki’s) criminal breach of trust or misappropriation of funds of the Kwara State Government.<br />
<br />
“The applicant (Saraki) procured one Abdul Adama who was his personal member of staff to receive cash from then-Controller of Finance and Account of Government House, Kwara State, Mr Isiaka Kareem, on a monthly basis, the sum of N100m.<br />
<br />
“While the applicant was the governor of Kwara State, the total sum of N12bn was withdrawn in cash from the Kwara State Government House’s account domiciled in Zenith Bank.”<br />
<br />
The EFCC denied being controlled by the All Progressives Congress, adding that the fresh investigation of Saraki was different from the ones related to the one conducted by the Code of Conduct Bureau.<br />
<br />
Saraki had stated in an affidavit he deposed to in support of the origination motion that acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, was on a revenge mission because of the role he (Saraki) played in blocking his confirmation as EFCC chairman.<br />
<br />
He said, “Apart from the instigation by my political adversaries, my close contacts have confirmed to me that the 4th respondent (EFCC) renewed its harassment as a way of punishing me for the decision of the Senate not to clear acting chairman of the EFCC, Alhaji Ibrahim Magu, to be appointed as the substantive chairman of the commission.”<br />
<br />
Saraki said the EFCC was also pained because he was in charge of the Senate when the legislative arm of government ensured the creation of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit to Magu’s annoyance.<br />
<br />
He had also alleged that he was being hounded by the anti-graft body because he emerged as the President of the Senate against the wishes of certain elements in the APC in 2015.<br />
<br />
Saraki said the aggrieved elements in the APC were using the EFCC agency to harass him.<br />
<br />
He argued that the allegations levelled against him were not new as he had been charged before the CCT and emerged victorious.<br />
<br />
He said he was already a successful businessman before becoming governor in 2003 and therefore asked the court to rule that his probe was a breach of his fundamental human rights.<br />
<br />
The case has been adjourned till July 2, 2019.

Prominent Yoruba leaders on Thursday re-echoed the legacies of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as they reviewed cases of kidnapping in the South-West region of the country.<br />
<br />
The leaders, who converged to honour the memory and legacies of Awolowo at the book presentation of the Yoruba translation of his autobiography titled ‘Awo’ by Alaroye, also decried the insecurity in the land.<br />
<br />
Speakers at the book presentation held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, were the Oyo State Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, represented by his deputy, Alhaji Rauf Olaniyan; Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; Onimeko of Imeko, Oba Benjamin Alabi; Chief Ayo Adebabjo; Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Dr Gani Adams; Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu and Mr Yinka Odumakin, among others.<br />
<br />
Referring to a recent security summit, Adebanjo accused South-West governors, except Governor Makinde, of paying lip service to the issue of insecurity for fear of not offending a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu.<br />

Adebanjo said Nigerians must be ready to liberate themselves if their leaders failed to live up to their constitutional responsibility of providing security.<br />
<br />
Alaafin who minced no words over the insecurity in the land, said, “At the national level today, we have unprecedented state of insecurity culminated by kidnapping, Fulani herdsmen harassment and all sorts of criminality that have enveloped Yorubaland today.<br />
<br />
“The Yoruba are proud of their harmonious relationship with indigenous Fulani which has spread over many centuries. Such relationships have led to inter-ethnic marriages and business entrepreneurship. At that time, cattle herders carried stick to direct the movement of their cattle. It was unlike now when supposed herders are armed sophistically like soldiers. At that time, farming and rearing were complementary unlike now where they are targeted against each other.<br />
<br />
“As far as I am concerned, there is no solution to the current national challenge than the restructuring of our federal system to the glorious old days with some modifications where necessary. As of now, the centre is too powerful beyond any mortal capacity to supervise and superintend the whole national security.”<br />
<br />
In his contribution, the Aare Ona Kankanfo of Yorubaland, said, “We should do whatever we have to deliver ourselves. I can still roll out one million Yoruba people.<br />
<br />
“The Miyeti Allah is taking out their plans one after the other, while the eastern governors kicked against it, our governors are trying to be diplomatic about the matter.<br />
<br />
“We won’t allow insecurity to overwhelm us. We will not allow it to distract us from pursuing restructuring.”<br />
<br />
Similarly, the spokesperson for Afenifere, Odumakin, appealed to traditional rulers to warn South-West governors against giving herders land for Ruga settlement.<br />
<br />
 In her presentation, Awolowo-Dosumu expressed happiness at the presence of traditional rulers and other personalities at the event.<br />
<br />
She, however, lamented that out of the invited six governors in South-West, only the governor of the host state was present.<br />
<br />
She said, “We call this gathering in the name of our father, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. I am so delighted to see the Alaafin of Oyo here.<br />
<br />
“Awolowo was the premier of the western region which covers eight states of the present government.<br />
<br />
“I encourage Yoruba elders to be visionary and not to forsake their visions. Awolowo never forsook his vision for the Yoruba race, and that’s why we’re all benefitting from it.”<br />
<br />
The guest speaker at the event, Prof. Banji Akintoye, encouraged young Yoruba people to emulate Chief Awolowo and continue with his legacies.<br />
<br />
Akintoye said, “We thank Alaroye for this. This is a wake-up call to the Yoruba race so that our nation, the Yoruba nation, will not be brought down by anybody.<br />
<br />
“There is an intention by a small group of people to reduce the Yoruba race. It is a deliberate attempt by the few people to destroy the people of Nigeria. The Yoruba people must not permit.”<br />
<br />
The Publisher of Alaroye, Adedayo Alao, lamented the security situation, saying, “The security situation is getting worse by the day.  Truly, things are happening.”

The Governing Council of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), said it has suspended implementation of the new tariffs which came into effect on 1st June, 2019.<br />
<br />
The move, NAFDAC said is to douse tension and assuage the yearnings of stakeholders in the pharmaceutical, food and allied industries.<br />
<br />
According to a statement signed by the director, Public Affairs, NAFDAC, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, the decision was reached after a marathon stakeholders forum and meeting of the Governing Council.<br />
<br />
The board said that the decision was to reach by the governing council of NAFDAC at a stakeholders meeting held recently in Lagos and was disclosed by the chairman of the council, Mr Inuwa Abdul-kadir.<br />

“After a marathon stakeholders forum and meeting of the governing council, it was resolved that all NAFDAC stakeholders affected by the new tariff will henceforth revert to payment of the old tariff until further notice.<br />
<br />
“The council has considered substantially the inputs of the stakeholders in arriving at a new tariff regime which will soon be released by the agency after doing all the needful including sensitising the public before it becomes effective,” Abdul-kadir. said.<br />
<br />
He said that the suspension of the new tariff is borne out of NAFDAC avowed commitment to the promotion of the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.<br />
<br />
Abdul-kadir said that the need to carry along stakeholders in decision making was in line with global best practices and that NAFDAC would continue to promote the manufacture, exportation, and importation of good quality products.<br />
<br />
“We need to promote local manufacture of regulated products as part of Federal Government concerted efforts to create jobs and increase foreign exchange earnings by our dear nation.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria has the potential of producing pharmaceutical products for the domestic consumption and export to West African Countries,” Abdul-kadir added.<br />
<br />
The chairman of the governing council stressed the need for NAFDAC to procure new laboratory equipment, operational vehicles and other facilities to enable it to render quality and efficient services.<br />
<br />

Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Thursday, sentenced a notorious yahoo yahoo kingpin, Akpojivi Onoriode, who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge bordering on cybercrime.<br />
<br />
The convict, a 29-year-old graduate of Delta State University, Abraka and a father of two, was arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Commission in the early hours of Saturday, May 4, 2019, following intelligence report exposing him of living above his means.<br />
<br />
He was picked up at his lavishly furnished duplex on Plot 10, Block VI, Unical Satellite Town, Calabar, Cross River State.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>Upon his arrest, the convict, popularly known as “Blinks” or “Mr. White”, confessed to having offshore accounts in China, and narrated how he started the business of defrauding people quite early, while he was still an undergraduate at Delta State University, Abraka in Delta State.<br />
<br />
The charge against Akpojivi reads: “That you, Onoriode Joel Akpojivi, on or about the 4th day of May 2019, in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully produce, supply, procure for use and distributed a computer program (fake online banking link platform) designed for the purpose of electronically defrauding unsuspecting persons and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 28 (1) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act 2015 and punishable under Section (1) (c) of the same Act.”<br />
<br />
Following the weight of evidence gathered against him by the EFCC, Akpojivi chose not to waste the time of the court as he pleaded “guilty” to the charge.<br />
<br />
In view of his plea, counsel for the EFCC, A.S. Abuh, informed the court of a plea bargain arrangement entered between the convict and the Commission, dated June 19, 2019 and filed on June 20, 2019.<br />
<br />
“I hereby pray the court to convict and sentence him based on the terms of the agreement,” she said.<br />
<br />
Delivering judgement, Justice Amobeda held that: “It is a known fact that crimes of this nature appear now to be prevalent in our time. I do hereby sentence the convict to 6 months imprisonment with an option of fine of N500,000.<br />
<br />
“The convict shall forfeit to the Federal Government of Nigeria the instruments used in the commission of the offence being thus: Acura ZDX with registration number SMK 245 DQ (Lagos), Range Rover Envogue with registration number FST 772 EQ (Lagos), Mercedes Benz E 300 with registration number LSD 393 EG (Lagos) and the seven bedroom duplex situated at Victory Way Extension, Satelite Town, Calabar, Cross River State.”<br />
<br />
Earlier, Justice Amobeda convicted another graduate of Delta State University, Abraka, Obabueki Philips, who was equally arraigned by the anti-graft agency on a one-count charge bordering on impersonation and cybercrime.<br />
<br />
When Obabueki was arrested, he admitted that his area of specialisation was impersonation, and that he sends out fraudulent emails to defraud his victims.<br />
<br />
A forensic analysis of his laptop led to the recovery of quite a number of highly incriminating scam documents that further indicted him of the crime.<br />
<br />
The charge to which Obabueki pleaded guilty to reads: “That you, Obabueki Eromosele Philips, (aka Leo Sim) ‘m’ on or about the 30th day of May, 2019 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonate one Leo Sim, with intent to obtain property from unsuspecting persons, the pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (2) (b) (ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (b) (iv) of the same Act.”<br />
<br />
In view of his guilty plea, Abuh informed the court of the plea bargain arrangement entered between the Commission and the convict and also prayed the court to convict and sentence him based on the agreements therein.<br />
<br />
The court thereafter sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N50,000.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that developed countries willing to do business with Nigeria were scared by insecurity and corruption.<br />

He has also raised the alarm over the 13 million children who are out of school in the country and advocated for the re-introduction of a shift programme in the educational system of the country in order to cater for those roaming about the streets.<br />

Addressing Nigerian youths under the aegies of the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) who had visited him at his Abeokuta residence, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and honoured him as “Father of the Nation”, Obasanjo said that if he hadn’t had a formal education he wouldn’t have been opportuned to engage in both the national and international assignments he has found himself.<br />

“Most of these developed countries want to do businesses with us but almost all of them are afraid, because of insecurity and corruption in the land.<br />
<br />
“We behave like ostrich that buries its head in the sand.<br />

These developed countries know us more than ourselves.<br />
<br />
As a result, we shouldn’t keep saying or do things that will make us a laughing stock.<br />
<br />
“God has given us a country, no matter what you feel about Nigeria.<br />

“Don’t let us fall into the primordial life of breaking this country along ethnicity and religion. Let every Nigerian stand firm and say it is my country, because we have no alternative,” he explained.<br />

“Let us do things that will take us to the promise land,” he added.<br />

He stated that he felt sad that more than 13 million Nigerians are out of schools.<br />

To address the malaise, the former President said he has at various times called for interventions, one of which was the re-introduction of the shift programme in the educational system of the country.<br />

“I have on several occasions called for interventions in the educational system of the country.<br />

“The government only needs to re-introduce the former shift programme. In doing this, there will be morning and afternoon shifts for the students.<br />
<br />
He urged the Nigerian youths not to let anybody tell them they are young to rule the country.<br />

“I started making my meaningful contribution to this country in 1960. I was under 24 years old when I participated in the Congo war. By the time we had civil war I was under 35 years and when I became the Military Head of State, I was under 40 years<br />
old.<br />

“Let nobody tells you that you are too young to rule this country. “Woe betide anybody who says you are too young to rule this country.<br />
<br />
“During my own time, I was given opportunities to go through trainings and also to face challenges.<br />
<br />
“You are to prepare yourself to accept whatever opportunity that comes your way and also be prepared to face the challenges of life.<br />
<br />
“I have traveled far and wide outside the country, and the people outside there are not better endowed by God, but set things right. They get a few things right and do them right.<br />

It is a two-way thing, consistency, and continuity. We got it right in Universal Basic Education (UBE), primary healthcare and many others. When we were in government, we had laws and policies that underpinned Federal Character.<br />

In his own remarks, the President of the Youths Council, Niyi Oladele, commended the former President for laying the solid foundation for the current democracy to thrive.<br />

The Nigerian Government on Thursday repudiated claims by a group styling itself as Northern Christian Elders Forum, who alleged that the Muhammadu Buhari administration is practicing bigotry and alienating Christians.<br />

The response by the Nigerian Government, according to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, is contained in a letter to the British Parliamentary Group, signed by Nigeria’s High Commissioner to UK, George Adetola Oguntade.<br />

He said “Two letters were addressed to Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, a former secretary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and now Head, “Independent Review of Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Support of Persecuted Christians, “and Baroness Berridge, the Chair of “All Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief. ”<br />

In the correspondences, he said, the Nigerian government strongly dismissed as inconceivable and outrightly false, allusions to the effect that the Boko Haram terrorism served a government agenda against Christians.<br />

“It would be useful for me to engage with this process to ensure that you are thoroughly briefed on the situation in Nigeria, “High Commissioner Oguntade wrote in the correspondences.<br />

Responding to the interim report on Foreign and Commonwealth Office Support for Persecuted Christians, Oguntade, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, told Rev. Mounstephen: “The safety and security of all Nigerians, whatever their faith, is a fundamental priority of the Buhari Government. The government knows that Nigeria can only achieve its potential if there is religious tolerance and cooperation.”<br />
<br />
The High Commissioner explained that President Buhari’s deputy is a Pastor, adding that the President “has befriended Church leaders and church groups both within and outside Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
He added that the President’s cabinet is balanced between Muslims and Christians, noting that he himself was a former Chancellor of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).<br />
<br />
According to Justice Oguntade, Vice President Osinbajo has maintained regular contacts with Christian and Muslim leaders as part of efforts to build and sustain interfaith dialogue.<br />
<br />
Stressing that the country’s security challenges had no ethnic and religious colourations, the High Commissioner said the farmers/herders clashes predated the Buhari administration, noting that such clashes bordered on the desire for pasture by the herders and the desire to protect crops from encroachment and destruction by the farmers.<br />
<br />
Oguntade explained that these clashes had a long history and the Buhari administration is taking a major step to address the root cause of these crises and violent clashes pitting Muslim and Christian farmers alike against the herders.<br />
<br />
According to the High Commissioner, “the issue of grazing routes is historically central to these conflicts and the Buhari administration is taking a holistic approach to the matter with a view to ending it once and for all, so that Nigerians can live in peace with one another.”<br />
<br />

The immediate-past Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, will appear before a Federal High Court in Abuja over his role in the payment of N2.5bn by the National Broadcasting Commission for the Federal Government Digital Switch-Over programme.<br />

According to a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, Rasheedat Okoduwa, the ICPC had filed 12 counts before Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo-Giwa, against the Director General of NBC, Modibbo Kawu, the Chairman of Pinnacle Communications Limited, Lucky Omoluwa, and the Chief Operating Officer of the company, Dipo Onifade.<br />
<br />
He added that the NBC DG misled the former minister into approving government funds to a private company.<br />
<br />
The ICPC is also prosecuting Kawu over alleged abuse of office and money laundering.<br />
<br />
The commission said, “The former minister’s involvement had come under questioning following discovery by the ICPC during investigations, that a government White Paper that governs the execution of the DSO programme was allegedly flouted by the head of the NBC.<br />
<br />
“Mohammed had however admitted in a statement to the commission that he was misled by Kawu, as opined in court by a witness from the ICPC, Osanato Olugbemi. Olugbemi, led in evidence by counsel for the ICPC, Henry Emore, also told the court that the payment of N2.5bn from the NBC to Pinnacle Communications Limited as seed grant was suspicious because only government-owned company was approved to benefit from the grant according to the White Paper.<br />
<br />
“The court also heard that the processes that led to the final payment of the fund to the private company were shrouded in secrecy as revealed by the minutes of an NBC emergency board management meeting where issues of carriage fees owed Pinnacle and not seed grant was discussed.”<br />
<br />
The statement said 47 suspicious transactions were originated by the chairman of Pinnacle Communications, Omoluwa, immediately after the receipt of the funds on June 2, 2017.<br />
<br />
“The transactions include payments of N363m to one Idowu Olatunde, N274.4m to one James Segun and N127 m to Onifade. Onifade explained that he received the money as legal fee he rendered to the company.<br />
<br />
“A Bureau de change operator, Salisu Daura, who also testified in court, said he received N167m in two installments of N97m and N70m. Daura added that the sums were converted into $265,000 and $195,735 at the rate of N360 to US dollar, and handed the cash to one Alhaji Sabo, supposedly on behalf of Pinnacle Communications,” the commission noted.

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has said that Nigeria currently ranked 181 out of 193 countries polled in terms women’s participation in politics.<br />

Dr Joy Onyesoh, Country Director, WILPF Nigeria, said this on Thursday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Onnyesoh was speaking during the National Conference on Women’s Participation in Nigeria: Post 2019 General Elections, in a presentation on “Incidences of Violence against Women during the 2019 Elections.<br />
<br />
She said Nigeria’s low ranking in women’s political participation was as a result of a myriad of challenges such as violence, intimidation, sexual assault and lack of internal party democracy.<br />

<br />
“Discrimination against women linked to social, legal, cultural and economic factors, violent nature of politics in Nigeria among others, are hindrances to women’s participation in politics.<br />
<br />
“There are trails of violence against women in the 2019 elections right from the party primaries to campaigns; it is so bad that some women were raped during the elections.<br />
<br />
“We need a sector-wide electoral violence prevention strategy to curb this menace,” she said.<br />
<br />
Onyesoh said that women, in particular, should play key roles in EVP activities, including the development of early warning and response systems, given their particular vulnerability to gender-based violence.<br />
<br />
This, she said would go a long way in curbing violence against them, especially during elections.<br />
<br />
Ms Comfort Lamptey, UN Women representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, said 23 years after the establishment of 30 per cent quota for women’s political representation, the average was still low.<br />
<br />
Lamptey said that the average still stood at only 15 per cent in elected assemblies and 17 per cent in governments in Africa, compared to the global average of 23 per cent in parliaments and five per cent for heads of government.<br />
<br />
She said after the 2019 election in Nigeria, only 4.5 per cent women were elected into office, a decline from the 2015 elections, where elected women constituted 5.6 per cent.<br />
<br />
Earlier, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission said the commission was committed to an all-inclusive government with particular attention to women.<br />
<br />
Yakubu who was represented by Prof. Anthonia Simbine, National Commissioner, INEC, reiterated commitment of the commission in championing electoral reforms that would enhance women’s participation in politics.<br />

Oluokun Soyinka, son of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says the unidentified young man who refused to give up his seat for his father was within his rights to do so.<br />
<br />
Oluokun said this in an open letter addressed to business mogul, Tonye Cole, who first reported the matter on social media.<br />
<br />
Soyinka’s son, while thanking Cole for his concern, however, berated the youths on social media who used the opportunity to insult his octogenarian father.<br />
<br />

He wrote, “The young man whose seat it was may have had a specific reason to insist on having his seat. He was within his rights, and WS (Wole Soyinka) would be the last person to make an issue of it. My irritation, however, is reserved for social media warriors.”<br />
<br />
“Some vehemently defended the right of the young man to claim his seat. They hailed him for bravely standing up to oppression and divined how a young WS himself might have reacted in a similar situation. (He is an activist but a gentleman, so it is most likely he would have graciously given way to an elder who mistakenly sat in his seat).<br />
<br />
“Some criticised WS for attempting to callously deprive a youth of the fruits of his hard-earned money. One wag even suggested he might as well have insisted on having the pilot’s seat.”<br />
<br />
Oluokun said the young man missed an opportunity of showing an act of kindness to an old man.<br />
<br />
Soyinka’s son said his father was disrespected and ought to have been treated better.<br />
<br />
He added, “I believe the learning point of this controversy lies in understanding the difference between right and entitlement. The seat owner had a right – that is enforceable. But the elder though he or she is entitled to some deference and respect, can only hope for it. In this case, it was not given and WS, unhesitatingly moved seat.”<br />
<br />
Oluokun added that it was illogical to in one breadth judge Soyinka for occupying another person’s seat and at the same time insist that the young man should not be judged for having tattoos.<br />
<br />
He added, “To the online outraged, I would point out that those who like to see an elder given his due deference are entirely within their rights to judge the young man. And if they decide to add some profiling (the t-shirt, tattoo, face cap), please just ‘chop it’!<br />
<br />
“He passed up a small opportunity to bestow an act of kindness, and commentators happily pointed out his emblems of youthful disregard for convention. After all, he had just disregarded a convention that many hold dear.”<br />
<br />
Soyinka’s son said this was not the first time his father would plead with someone to allow him to occupy the window seat<br />
<br />
He said his father does so most times to avoid people who would usually stop at the aisle to shake hands with him on the airplane.<br />
<br />
Oluokun argued that his father was a national hero who had made many sacrifices for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He recalled how his father fought several military dictators and even had to go on exile.<br />
<br />
Soyinka’s son said when his father returned to the country in the last 90s, he was given a free first class ticket by KLM in recognition of his heroism.<br />
<br />
“I have not commented on the fact that beyond being an elderly man, WS has served his country in a way that many would do well to emulate. I will leave that for others to go into. Our garrulous online youths, however, should not take freedom of expression for granted. In his day, the dictator Abacha tightly controlled the then novelty called the Internet.<br />
<br />
“People spent decades in jail, being tortured for merely hinting at criticism of the military ruler. Our freedom to hold our leaders accountable is a precious right bought by the heroism of many; some died, some are still living. So, as you fight your battles of today, please do so with a sense of history,” Oluokun said.<br />
<br />
He said extending courtesies based upon age such as offering your seat in a crowded bus or lifting a heavy bag is not just a matter of convention or kindness but common sense.<br />
<br />
He asked youths to remember that they would one day grow old and would one day rely on considerate fellow passengers or observant bystanders.

Christians and other religious organisations constitute the highest number of people who abuse drugs, not those who are thought to be hoodlums.<br />

The Consultant Psychiatrist, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Dr Amosu Sunday, stated this on Wednesday during the commemoration of 2019 World Drugs Day. He spoke on the topic, “The rage of drug/substance abuse in our society. What must we do?”<br />
<br />
The programme was organised by Mountain Top Rehabilitation Centre of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.<br />
<br />
According to him, when some Christians or members of other religious organisations go to hospitals, a large percentage of them do so because of one substance abuse or the other.<br />

He added that hospital wards that were specifically meant for patients, who suffered from drug abuse at a point in time, were often filled up and spilled over to other wards by those ones never thought could be sniffing cocaine, smoke hemp, or inject the substance into their systems.<br />
<br />
“To me, from what we have seen, more than 22 percent, not those who are suffering from the problem associated with the substance, also abuse the substance. The pattern is also disheartening.<br />
<br />
“When we talk about people abusing drugs, probably we talk of a young person, probably on the street, who we normally describe as hoodlums, but the pattern has changed to include young women, who dress well, who are church workers, who are children of pastors; they also have problems with drugs. There are also elderly people who abuse over-the-counter drugs,” he said.<br />
<br />
He added that those, who abuse the substance often suffer from both physical and mental health, like depression, dementia, amnesia, and more.<br />
<br />
Sunday noted that those who suffered from the physical aspect of drug abuse like smoking, were usually prone to lung cancer, chronic lung diseases like bronchitis. They also have problems with liver cirrhosis as their livers become weak.<br />
<br />
Consultant Psychiatrist, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Dr Richard Adeboye, described the team of 2019 World Drugs Day as apt. He stated that with health and justice being integrated to curb drug abuse, society would be better for it.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dr Thomas John as the acting alternate chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, bringing to an end the tenure of the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu.<br />
<br />
NNPC’s Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, who announced this in Abuja, stated that the new board chairman would hold the position until the appointment of a new Minister or Minister of State for Petroleum Resources by the President.<br />
<br />
Baru also said the new chairman’s appointment was with immediate effect.<br />
<br />
The GMD said, “Dr John, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, is before the appointment, a member of the NNPC Governing Board.”<br />

Baru added, “He (John) will hold the position of the Acting Alternate Chairman of the Governing Board until a new Minister of Petroleum Resources or Minister of State for Petroleum Resources is appointed to assume the Chairmanship or Alternate Chairmanship position, respectively in line with Sections 1(3) and 2(1) of the NNPC Act. The new appointment takes effect immediately.”<br />
<br />
The NNPC had seen series of changes in various management positions in recent weeks. Last week, the President appointed Mr Mele Kyari as the new Group Managing Director of the corporation, who would assume office after the end of the current GMD’s tenure on July 7, 2019.<br />
<br />
The President also appointed seven new Chief Operating Officers for the corporation.
