Nigerian Airforce foils Boko Haram’s plans to disrupt Sallah in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force said on Saturday it had foiled an attempt by Boko Haram to breach the peaceful Eid-el Kabir celebration in Borno.<br />

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, stated this at a feast organized for officers and men of the service at the 105 Composite Group, Maiduguri.<br />
<br />
Abubakar had held a grand feast for service men carrying out the counter-insurgency operation in the North-East, as part of the Eid-el Kabir celebration.<br />
<br />
He disclosed that the Air Force in a joint operation with the army had destroyed insurgents’ hideouts thereby scuttling their plans to attack communities during the festivities.<br />
<br />
“Boko Haram insurgents planned to destabilize the Sallah celebration, but with help of the Almighty Allah and our collective efforts, we foiled their plans.<br />
<br />
“Our objective is to protect life and property, safeguard the national territorial integrity and make our communities safe so that farmers can go back to their settlements and cultivate their farmlands.<br />
<br />
“We will remain in the forest to protect our people.<br />
<br />
“The insurgents are on the run due to concerted military efforts; the only option left for them is to surrender,” he said.<br />
<br />
Abubakar congratulated the men and officers of the service for their dedication and gallantry, saying that Nigerians were proud of their achievements.<br />
<br />
The air chief disclosed that the Air Force command had accorded priority to training and improvement of the welfare of its personnel.<br />
<br />
He added that arrangement had been concluded for the training of air force personnel within and outside the country, to strengthen defence operations.<br />
<br />
“We are sending some service men for training in Jordan.<br />
<br />
“We are committed to providing logistics, uniforms and ammunition to counter terrorism while construction of housing is in progress to provide decent accommodation for officers and men serving in the counter-insurgency campaign,” he added.<br />
<br />
Abubakar urged officers and men of the service to remain disciplined, display high sense of professionalism and respect civilians in the discharge of their duties.<br />
<br />
He also commended the people for their support to the service and called on them to provide useful information that would be helpful to the fight against Boko Haram.<br />
<br />
Meanwhil, Lawali Babagana Ibrahim, the Ward Head of the Pompomari area of Maiduguri, has applauded the service for the successes recorded in the counter-insurgency campaign.<br />
<br />
Ibrahim said the collaboration between the service and the vigilante group had helped to strengthen security in the area.<br />
<br />
“The service donated two cows to the vigilante group to enable them to celebrate Sallah.<br />
<br />
“There is mutual understanding between the service and the host community,” he said.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Borno Deputy Governor, Usman Durkwa, had declared that this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration was the most peaceful the state had recorded in the past seven years.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted localised rains over the central cities of Ilorin, Bauchi, Yola, Abuja and environs on Sunday morning.<br />

NiMet made this known in the daily Weather Outlook produced by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Saturday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
It added that thunderstorms were expected over the region later in the day with day and night temperatures in the range of 23 to 29 and 17 to 24 degrees Celsius respectively.<br />
<br />
The agency predicted that southern states would experience morning cloudy conditions over the inland of the Southeast and Southwest with high chances of rains over the coastal cities.<br />
<br />
It also predicted localised rains over the region later in the day with day and night temperatures in the ranges of 26 to 29 and 21 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.<br />
<br />
According to NiMet, the Northern States will experience morning rains over Sokoto and Kebbi states, while cloudy conditions may prevail over the rest of the region.<br />
<br />
“Cloudy conditions are likely to persist into the afternoon/evening hours, with exception of Sambisa, where thunderstorms with day and night temperatures of 24 to 32 and 22 to 24 degrees Celsius respectively will occur .<br />
<br />
“With sufficient moisture in the atmosphere, most parts of the country are suitable for weather activities over the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted.

Mr James Iorhuna, manager of the camp hosting persons displaced by the Makurdi flood, has decried the poor state of social and medical facilities at the camp.<br />

Manager told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi that the camp, located at the Makurdi International Market, was “not habitable”.<br />
<br />
“Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) faced with health challenges have no place for medical attention; with 450 households already registered here, there is an urgent need for more facilities,” he said.<br />
<br />
The manager particularly regretted that the camp had no food, mosquito nets, health facilities, mattresses and other essentials that could guarantee minimum comfort for the flood victims.<br />
<br />
“The IDPs have nothing to eat. They are still waiting for the relief materials promised by government. For now, everyone is helpless,” he said.<br />
<br />
Also speaking, Mr Terwase Tarkende, an IDP, said that there was no facility “for the most minimum comfort”.<br />
<br />
Tarkende said that his son, James, who took ill two days ago had been starving and without any medical attention due to lack of funds.<br />
<br />
Another IDP, Mrs. Rosemary Audu, who is in the camp with her five children, complained of hunger.<br />
<br />
“We have not seen food since we arrived the camp,” she said.<br />
<br />
She appealed to the government to make immediate arrangements for feeding to avoid health complications arising from hunger. (NAN)

The Anambra State chapter of the Buhari Support Group has rejected the outcome of the recent All Progressives Congress primary for the November governorship election in the state over alleged irregularities.<br />

The exercise was also rejected by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups, with over 30 affiliates.<br />
<br />
The coalition, therefore, demanded a total re-verification of the delegates’ list as used in the primary for authentication through a confirmation process.<br />
<br />
While the BSG urged the appeal panel to critically look into the anomalies or it would mobilise its members to support another candidate, the CCSG threatened to seek redress in court to compel the APC to declare the election which produced Tony Nwoye null and void.<br />
<br />
The BSG’s position was contained in a petition to the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, signed by its Anambra State Coordinator, Dr. Emeka Nwaofor, and Secretary, Chief (Mrs.) Stella Obiora, while CCSG’s threat was contained in its petition to the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Mamman Daura, signed by its President, Etuk Bassey Wiliams, and Secretary-General, Ibrahim Abubakar.<br />
<br />
The CCSG said, “We wish to conclude in expectation of justice that if no significant step or action is taken, we shall approach a court of competent jurisdiction to compel the party to do the needful. The party’s principles should not be undermined and swept under the carpet.<br />
<br />
“Elections are for people who have good pedigree and can justify their capabilities; they must have track records of achievements and not self-seeking individuals who have maintained the role of spoilers in every election. We assure you of our readiness to provide all the necessary evidence with respect to all the allegations contained in this petition as we attached overleaf copies of some pieces of evidence.”<br />
<br />
The BSG, on its part, said as members of the APC loyal to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, the party had a good chance of defeating the incumbent governor, Willy Obiano, because of the “Buhari factor,” adding that “but with the emergence of Tony Nwoye, the party will lose out.”<br />
<br />
The group added, “Our reason for this generational call is borne out of malpractices which contravene the electoral act perpetrated by him [Nwoye] which include but not limited to financial inducement and swapping of delegates.”<br />
<br />
The BSG also alleged that thugs were used to harass “innocent” party faithful while 2,700 identity cards were produced in connivance with officials of Anambra State in Area 10 Shopping Mall, Abuja, “which were used for the swapping of the 2013 delegates’ list used for the primary.”<br />
<br />
While accusing Nwoye of allegedly blackmailing Buhari on several occasions in Anambra State before he defected to the APC, the group alleged that he was being sponsored by a multi-billionaire and an alleged “sworn enemy” of President Buhari who allegedly worked against him in the 2015 general election.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The presidential election held on August 8 was not conducted in accordance with the constitution,” Chief Justice, David Maraga ruled, according to Kenya’s The Nation Newspaper.</div>

<a name='more' id="more"></a>Danladi and Salamatu got married in 2014, but have been experiencing fertility challenges ever since. Now Salamatu is carrying a three-month-old pregnancy for his best friend, Francis in Lafia, Nassarawa State.<br />

In an interview with Saturday Sun, Danladi revealed how he started suspecting his friend’s affair with his wife when he started frequenting his house, on the pretext of paying a friendly visit, even when he (Danladi) was not around.<br />

At the end of the confession, she confirmed to him that she was actually three months pregnant for Francis. According to her “A year after our marriage, we went to Dalhatu Specialist Hospital, Lafia, to carry out some tests to know why I have not conceived.<br />

The tests showed that my husband has low and watery sperm count and as a result might not be able to impregnate a woman except something was done about it." On when she copulated with Francis, she said: "Our first meeting was on April 8, 2017 at Dunami Hotels, Lafia.</div>

I footed the hotel bill. We had a marathon session. I didn’t use any protection because I was ovulating. In the morning before we departed, we had a quickie. That month’s end, I missed my period."</div>

The President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Samson  Ayokunle, has called on the Federal Government to address the economic hardship and the high cost of living in the country which he said had reached an alarming level.<br />

The Christian leader appealed to the government to address the lopsidedness in the polity, attributing the restructuring agitations in the country to the failure of the National Assembly and the National Council of State to tackle the issues.<br />

Ayokunle in a statement on Saturday in Abuja by his Special Assistant (Media and Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, rejoiced with Muslims as they celebrated Eid-el-Kabir and urged the citizens to douse the tension in the country, saying no country has ever survived two wars.<br />

He said, “CAN also rejoices with the First Family and the FG for the restoration of the health of President Muhammadu Buhari as we charge the government to reduce the cost of living that has reached an alarming level.<br />
<br />
“It is needless to remind the political class to fulfil all their promises made during the last elections as they are warming up for another general election. Their words should be their bound.<br />
<br />
“We are tired of hearing billions and trillions of naira being shared among the three tiers of government in Abuja with little or nothing to show for it.”<br />
<br />
Ayokunle said it was time the leaders were held accountable for the management of the nation’s commonwealth.<br />
<br />
“CAN as a body wants our country to remain one but we also want the lopsidedness in the polity to be addressed and it is because both the National Assembly and the National Council of State have failed to address it that is making all well meaning across all the divides to be calling for the restructuring,” he noted.<br />
<br />
The cleric admonished Muslim leaders in the country “to join hands with us in our vision to have a nation where social justice, equity, peace, unity, and progress are her hallmarks.”</div>

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has denied reports he will run for the Presidency on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), in 2019.<br />

He was reacting to a report that officials of PDP think-tank programme set up by former President, Goodluck Jonathan have contacted him to be the party’s presidential torch bearer in 2019.<br />

“I am an entrepreneur. My passion is to create jobs for Nigerians and not otherwise”, Dangote told Daily Times.<br />
<br />
“I am not interested in politics and this is authoritative. No member of any think tank committee has contacted me. People should stop dropping my name for the 2019 presidency.<br />

“This whole thing is an attempt by people who do not like me. They are doing all these with a view to putting me on a collision course with President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party. They are people who are jealous of the successes I have so far recorded in business.<br />

“My passion is for business development, provision of jobs and wealth creation, not politics. I have never shown interest in politics. I’m not interested in politics. I am not a politician. My passion has always been business and business.<br />

“Buhari is like a father to me. Nobody should try to set me on a collision course with President Buhari. That will not work. I have high regard and respect for the President.<br />

“For emphasis once again, I am not a politician. I can’t and won’t confront President Buhari. They should leave me out of any high wire politics and horse trading.<br />

A leading Barcelona board member claimed Liverpool set an asking price of 200 million euros ($238 million) for midfielder Philippe Coutinho as the Catalan giants criticised the rampant inflation in the football transfer market on Saturday.<br />

Albert Soler, Barca’s director of institutional relations, said the club’s under-fire board would not put the future of the institution at risk by bending to excessive demands.<br />

“Liverpool put a price of 200 million euros on a player that we wanted,” Soler told reporters at a press conference held to explain Barca’s haphazard signing policy this summer.<br />

Barca ended the window making a slight profit on transfers after receiving a world record 222 million euros from Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain.<br />

Soler dismissed claims that Barca’s status as one of the world’s leading clubs is being threatened by their inability or unwillingness to match the lavish spending of other clubs.<br />

“We haven’t lost any international status for having common sense and not putting the financial viability of the club at risk.”<br />

Barca also insist that five-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi will soon sign a new contract, tying him to the club until 2021.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He, however, said that there was letter of award by the state government on the purchase of additional 59 units of vehicles later supplied by the company.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Ngele said that out of the 235 vehicles supplied between 2013 to 2014, total of N1.449 billion have been paid, leaving the balance of N459 million debt being owed the firm.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But a witness from the Ministry of Local Government, Mr Samuel Akinjide in his statement on oath alleged that the ministry received an invoice of N1,284,159,000.00 from the state government for the purchase of 156 Ford Range of vehicles for traditional rulers in Ekiti State, adding that the ministry was mandated to finance the purchase.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He also alleged that even before the state government gave the directive, the then Commissioner for Finance, Mr Vincent Kolawole had taken delivery of the 156 vehicles.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Akinjide further averred that “Coscharis Motors on 2nd of May, 2014 requested for payment of in respect of 235 vehicles instead of the 156 units the ministry was directed to purchase.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“By this letter, there is no evidence that Coscharis Motors paid taxes on the vehicles. The vehicles were distributed without the input of the ministry”.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said that the local governments were to settle the debt on equal basis even though they didn’t solicit for it.</div>

Investigations revealed that the Governor hurriedly returned to the State after the threat by Cross River Transparency Network International, (CRTNI) which called on Cross River State House of Assembly to immediately commence his impeachment process over alleged illegal foreign trips.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The group had alleged that since assumption of office, Governor Ayade had traveled overseas more than any governor in the history of this country under the pretext of looking for investors for the state. </div>

“Arik Air, a wholly owned Nigerian company operated without hitch for 10 years. It started when naira was 150/$1 and fuel was 97 per litre and managed without any significant increase in fares, it survived for 10 years in a very hostile operations environment, paying loans it obtained in USD and salaries to over 2000 employees.<br />
“The company ran into heavy clouds as the economy went into recession and next line of action was for AMCON to take it over and now hurrying to hand it over to a foreign company that will sack most of the indigenous staff of the airline.”</blockquote>

“They should look at why Nigerian Airlines don’t survive for a long time. They should look at their policies and operating environment in the country, which to us is an indictment of the country itself.<br />
“It is further complicated with the fact that Nigeria generates the traffic that even all regional carriers including the famous Ethiopian Airlines depend on in West and Central Africa.<br />
