Nollywood actress and fashionista, Mercy Aigbe is of the opinion that Coronavirus can’t be curbed in Nigeria because Nigerians are not observing the social distancing order. She wonders if Nigerians even understood what social distancing meant. 
 
In a post on her official Instagram page, the beautiful Lagos-based actress, wrote “People still don’t understand what it means to social distance. Neighbors visiting neighbors, friends taking a stroll together, people still meeting up. We are still playing. Are people serious about curbing the spread of this virus? It makes me wonder”

Earlier in the week, singer, Tiwa Savage, had an Instagram Live session, during which she sang and rubbed minds with her fans. 
 
During the chat, the singer spoke on how the COVID-19 crisis had humbled her. She said, “This is a really weird time for everyone. Whether you are rich or famous; it affects everyone. It can be a little scary actually because one doesn’t know what would happen next. One doesn’t know what tomorrow brings. The coronavirus pandemic has humbled me because I had my album ready to be released. I had a lot of shows, festivals and tours lined up. All of that had to be cancelled and some postponed. We don’t know’’, when this will stop. This is despite all the plans one has already made. It definitely humbled all of us.” 
 
The pretty mother of one also urged her fans to learn the necessary lessons from the pandemic. Savage noted that it was only God that could take the world out of the crisis. She added, “When this is over, I hope it teaches us to value the small things in life.  I hope it teaches us to value spending time with family and saving; it is important to save. When we get back to our normal lives, I hope we don’t go back to what we were doing before. I hope this teaches us to value family, our mental state and being close to God. It’s only God that can take us out of this.”

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling admits he wants to get his hands on one of Lionel Messi’s shirts, even if he might not rush to put it on his wall. 
 
Sterling who is building up a collection after swapping his jersey with star opponents following big games, but he keeps them locked away. 
 
The 25-year-old says he is waiting until the end of his career before bringing together his silverware and framing his shirt collection. 
 
“I am a shirt collector but I don’t put any shirts on my wall as of yet,” Sterling told BBC Radio 5 Live.

The Lagos State Government says the distribution of palliatives has been based on its database, denying allegations that relief materials are not getting to the masses. 
 
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Gbolahan Lawal, said the state government had been using data from the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency. 
 
He spoke during the flag-off and handover of food and non-food items from the Victims Support Fund COVID-19 Taskforce to the state government. 
 
Lawal said, “We got 25,000 households through the LASDRA database. From our data, 191,000 Lagosians are between the ages of 60 and above and we filtered the data and arrived at 25,000 people, who responded to our text messages and they all got our food packages.

“We have also reached out to about 5,000 people living with disabilities in our seven clusters of visual impairment, physical disabilities, albinism, dwarfism, and other clusters across the state. We have also reached out to riverine communities starting from Irewe in Ojo, Ogun in Epe and 116 riverine communities with more than 5,000 households. We have also selected groups, artisans, trade unions and others in the informal sectors and depend on daily wages through their leaders.” 
 
Earlier, the chairperson of the Victims Support Fund COVID-19 Taskforce, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, said the group, which had focused on the north-east in the last five years, decided to target frontline COVID-19 states to assist people in coping with the effects of the lockdown. 
 
“We know Lagos is at the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cases keep increasing every day. We have been increasingly worried about how we can provide support for the state government to efficiently implement the lockdown order because we are concerned about the community transmission of coronavirus. If people are hungry, they will not stay at home and it will be hard to flatten the curve. 
 
“We are donating 5,100 pieces each of 10 kilogrammes of rice, beans, garri, vegetable oil and salt and we are targeting 30,000 to 40,000 households across Lagos metropolis through 10 of our partner NGOs to reach the poor and vulnerable,” she added. 
 
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, more than half of the over 1000 confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria were recorded in Lagos. 
 
The state has also been on Federal-Government ordered lockdown since 11pm on March 30 as part of measures to halt the spread of the lethal infection.

Governor Nasiru Ahmad El-Rufai has explained why his government may not relax the lockdown order during Ramadan, insisting that ‘’the severe challenges posed to lives and livelihoods by COVID-19 made it impossible to relax the quarantine conditions at this time.” 
 
El Rufai,however appealed to Muslims to see the special circumstances under which Ramadan was being observed this year as a necessary sacrifice to safeguard public health. 
 
In a message to mark the commencement of Ramadan, Governor El-Rufai expressed gratitude to Allah for His Mercy even in this difficult moment. 
 
In the message which was signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, El Rufai  salutes Muslims as the fasting begins.

The Governor urged ‘’Muslims to pray for the country, peace in the land and the containment of Covid-19 as they observe the discipline of fasting, worship and spiritual renewal in the holy month of Ramadan. 
 
El Rufai also commended the commitment of Imams and other leaders of faith to ensure that the activities connected to Ramadan are conducted without mass gatherings and congregational worship. 
 
The statement  described this rational approach to the practise of faith as exemplary. 
 
The Governor also argued  that ‘’the severe challenges posed to lives and livelihoods make it impossible to relax the quarantine conditions at this time.’’ 
 
El Rufai  expressed confidence that ‘’if the necessary sacrifices are made now, and everyone observes public health advice such as social distancing, regular hand-washing with soap and water, wearing face masks in public, avoiding large gatherings and the practise of respiratory hygiene, then we will be nearer to fully containing Covid-19.’’

Popular actress, Regina Daniels has stated that she is adding weight like a grown woman due to the sit-at-home directives imposed by the federal government to limit spread of COVID-19 outbreak.

An economist, Dr Boniface Chizea, on Saturday in Lagos urged the Federal Government to consider gradual unlocking of sectors of the economy as it continues to fight COVID-19 spread. 
 
Chizea, the Managing Director of BIC Consultancy Services, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that gradual unlocking of the economy would prevent desperation, irrational and anti-social actions from the citizens. 
 
BIC Management Consultancy Company offers consultancy services to organisations including the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Company. 
 
Chizea hailed the federal and state governments for efforts in fighting the pandemic.

He noted that the lockdown was necessary but urged that it could be gradually eased to save the economy. 
 
“More farmers, for instance, should be able to go back to farms,” he said. 
 
“We need to ensure we do not miss the planting season; otherwise, we would be inviting hunger. 
 
“As most countries are going to be facing similar challenges, the option of food importation might not be there even if we are able to find the funds to do so. 
 
“This is one strong reason to acknowledge the initiative of the Central Bank with its Anchor Borrowers programme, which has made the country self-sufficient in rice production among other staple products,” he said. 
 
The economist said that the government should, however, continue enforcing the social distancing order to prevent COVID-19 spread. 
 
Chizea said that financial services providers and telecommunications services providers  could operate without attracting crowds of people. 
 
He added that eateries and food vendors could also offer home services or  takeaways to avoid crowd. 
 
He advised that supermarkets should be allowed to open with all necessary safety protocols observed. 
 
Chizea said that  elite recreational centres could re-open under a strict condition that they  should avoid crowd-pulling events at the moment. 
 
He advised  that markets should be allowed to open on selected days with adequate precautionary measures  observed in place. 
 
“We have a very large informal market with a sizable proportion of the population who are youths engaged in that sector, and if they don’t work, they won’t  eat,” he said. 
 
Chizea  advised that states where no index case had been reported should continue to close  borders to prevent spread of COVID-19 into them. 
 
According to him, wearing of face masks should be enforced. 
 
Chizea advised that regular washing of hands with soap under running water should be sustained. 
 
He urged increased testing  for COVID-19 to isolate those infected and trace their contacts. 
 
He urged the government to increase  testing capacity.

The Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, has resigned. 
 
His resignation was not unconnected with the persistent crisis between the Governor and the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. 
 
In his resignation letter dated 25th April 2020, Akerele said; “My decision to exit the government is based on administrative and governance grounds.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday named former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as a Special Envoy for the newly inaugurated Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. 
 
She is to serve alongside British business executive, Sir Andrew Witty in the same capacity, to mobilise international commitment to the initiative. 
 
Director-General of the organisation, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, made the announcement during the launch of the ACT Accelerator — via webinar from Geneva. 
 
“I would especially like to thank Sir Andrew Witty and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for agreeing to act as Special Envoys for the ACT Accelerator,” Ghebreyesus said in his remarks.

The initiative is an international collaboration aimed at accelerating the development, production, and equitable distribution of COVID-18 drugs, tests kits, and vaccines around the world. 
 
This is the fourth international assignment given to Okonjo-Iweala in less than two months. 
 
On March 7, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa appointed her a member of the country’s Economic Advisory Council, which comprises indigenous and international economic experts. 
 
The council advises the president and government on the development and implementation of economic policies toward advancing inclusive growth. 
 
A month later on April 10, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, named Okonjo-Iweala a member of the fund’s External Advisory Group. 
 
The group comprises prominent individuals from around the world, who will serve as Georgieva’s special advisers. 
 
Okonjo-Iweala is one of the four Special Envoys the African Union (AU) appointed on April 12 to mobilise international support for its efforts toward addressing the coronavirus pandemic. 
 
The AU special envoys are charged with soliciting the support of the G20, the European Union and other international financial institutions for the organisation’s response. 
 
Okonjo-Iweala is an internationally respected economist and development expert, who has served as Managing Director of the World Bank, among other assignments.

Lagos State has recorded a staggering 80 new cases of Coronavirus, the highest it has recorded in one day. 
 
According to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, of the 114 new coronavirus cases released on Friday, Lagos ramp up 80 of the cases, making a mockery of the 10 cases that were discharged the same day.

The state now has a whopping 657 coronavirus infections so far. 
 
The state has discharged 119 coronavirus survivors, but with the huge cases being recorded on daily basis, there is more trouble ahead. 
 
Between Sunday and Friday, this week, Lagos ramps up 361 new Coronavirus infections, making the rate at which the deadly disease spikes in the state worrisome. 
 
The state has a whopping 525 active Coronavirus cases to deal with, according to the NCDC.

Emmanuel Adebayor has defended his refusal to donate to Togo capital Lome’s coronavirus battle and distanced himself from fellow African football stars Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o. 
 
The 36-year-old, who now plays for Olimpia in Paraguay, said he does not want to be compared with Drogba and Eto’o and feels criticised because he has not established a foundation in his hometown.

“I am compared with Drogba and Eto’o,” he said during a Facebook Live. “However, I am neither of them. I am Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor and I will always do what I want. 
 
“I do what I want, I eat what I want, and this is the most important thing. Of course, there will be those who criticise me because I did not create a foundation in Lome.” 
 
The former Manchester City and Arsenal forward said he will not make a donation after feeling mistreated. 
 
“For those saying I do not donate, let me be very clear: I do not donate,” he added. “It is very simple. 
 
“It is like some people believe that I brought coronavirus to Lome. It is very unfortunate but that is how it is and that is how this country is.” 
 
Drogba and Eto’o recently reacted with outrage when French professors discussed on television the possibility of using Africa as a testing ground for coronavirus vaccines. 
 
Adebayor also said that he would not be pressured by others to spend his own money. 
 
“I’m just living my life, I’m just enjoying myself,” he added. “A lot of people are coming on my page and asking why are you not doing a charity. 
 
“For God’s sake, why are you asking me to do a charity? I do what my heart asks me to do, not what you people ask me to do. 
 
“I hate it. If I have 10,000 in my pocket and someone comes across my page and will say use that 10,000 to do something… 
 
“Whatever you have in your pocket, use it as you wish. It’s as simple as that.”

The Oyo State Government on Friday indicated that it might return the 1,800 bags of rice donated to the state by the Federal Government as COVID-19 palliative on the grounds that the rice had been infested with weevils. 
 
The state government took delivery of the three trailer loads of rice through the Nigeria Customs Service on Monday.

The Executive Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Agribusiness, Dr Debo Akande, explained that the 1,800 bags of rice from the Federal Government had spoilt. 
 
Akande said, “We received these items from the Federal Government via the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and we brought them to the warehouse. It was in the process of further inspection that we discovered that the rice had been infested with weevils. 
 
“On that basis, we formed a committee to re-inspect it so we can be sure of what we have received. 
 
“We don’t want to create another problem while providing solution to another one. We have inspected it; we have done random selection and we have seen that similar things apply across the board. 
 
“We have agreed to return them to the source but if there are good ones with good quality that could be sent to us as replacement, we will be glad to receive them.” 
 
Akande promised that the situation would not in anyway delay the planned distribution of palliatives by the state government. 
 
He added, “We all know that a good number of food items have been received by the Food Security Committee of the Task Force and they would be distributed in the next couple of days. We have in place a robust system for distribution and that we have finalised on it.”

A British-Nigerian woman alleged to be Benue State’s COVID-19 index case on Friday denied ever being infected. 
 
Susan Idoko-Okpe, 56, from Otukpa in Ogbadigo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State but resident in the United Kingdom, said she was the victim of mistaken identity. 
 
According to her, the medical report upon which she was quarantined belonged to a 62-year-old woman, Sarah Okpe, from Otukpo LGA.

Idoko-Okpe claimed that she had been quarantined at the National Hospital, Abuja since March 27, despite neither being ill nor asymptomatic. 
 
In an April 23 letter to the Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire, through her lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), she demanded her release and an unreserved apology. 
 
A photocopy of an April 2, Benue State University Teaching Hospital letter to the Infectious Diseases Unit, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital seen by The Nation, stated that a Susan Okpe was referred to the facility from a private hospital on February 28, after she tested positive for COVID-19. 
 
But, according to Idoko-Okpe, she was still in the United Kingdom by February 28, and only arrived in Nigeria on March 22. 
 
“As of 28th February when the letter was written, our client was still in the United Kingdom and she only arrived in Nigeria on March 22, 2020, as confirmed by the stamp of the Nigerian Immigration Service on her passport. 
 
“The said letter indicated that the patient was referred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital from a private hospital ‘AFTER she tested positive to COVID 19.’ 
 
“As of this period, no test had been (nor could have been) conducted on our client as she was still in the United Kingdom and had not arrived Nigeria at all; and 
 
“Our Client is not SUSAN OKPE and she is not 62 years old,” Idoko-Okpe stated in her petition. 
 
According to her, part of the medical basis for which she was quarantined, was a “purported laboratory test result from the National Reference Laboratory, Abuja, which refers to “OKPE SUSAN, 58 years, Female, Benue State, Otukpo Local Government Area.” 
 
The letter added: “Our Client is not 58 years old, she is not Okpe Susan and she is not from Otukpo LGA. 
 
“In this same test result, it is stated that the ‘Date of onset of Fever’ is “16/03/2020″, by which date our Client was still in the United Kingdom, having only arrived Nigeria on March 22 2020.”

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, has explained why the lockdown measure should not be relaxed amid efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic. 
 
The President Muhammadu BuharI,  had on March 29 ordered a lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun states for 14 days to curb COVID-19 spread. Many states had also followed suit. 
 
But as the number of COVID-19 cases increased, the President on April 13 extended the lockdown for 14 more days.

As of the time of filing this report, the coronavirus had spread to 26 states and the FCT, with 1,095 cases recorded across the country by the NCDC. While 208 patients had been discharged, 32 had died. 
 
The new cases were 80 in Lagos, 21 in Gombe, five in FCT, two each in Zamfara and Edo, and one each in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto states. 
 
Speaking on Friday at a media briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said it was not yet time to relax the lockdown. 
 
He noted that although the lockdown was having negative effects on the economy as it was impeding Nigerians’ ability to go about their daily activities, he said it was vital to be patient and endure the lockdown further to ensure a safe and healthy society when the economy would be reopened. 
 
He said, “We will eventually exit this stage and restart our normal life but that stage is still a while to come and I ask for your endurance, support and patience. Lots of efforts are going on across the world to find new therapy, to find vaccine. 
 
“Everybody is pushing hard along this direction. We need unprecedented level of caution to continue carrying out the preventive measure that we have advised many times on this platform. 
 
“Many families have not been able to bury their dead, rescheduled their marriages and baptism and everything they are doing. In a way, life is in suspense. Everyone recognises the sacrifice Nigerians have made but we really have to encourage one another to continue to a position where we can relax some of that (lockdown) but until we get to that place, we have to continue in the short term. 
 
“We are working hard to reach a point where we can relax some of these measures but we are not there yet. We ask you to join us to continue this journey with us and amplify these messages that we are giving. We are happy to have the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress here with us today (Friday).” 
 
Ihekweazu added that the citizens must remember that the most vulnerable people were the elderly and people with other illnesses. 
 
“We must protect them. In protecting them, if they are living in the village, leave them there and support them with whatever resources you have. But please, now is not the time to encourage travelling,” he added.

Amid preparations for the evacuation of Nigerians abroad due to the raging coronavirus disease across the world, hotels in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory have refused to make their rooms available for the isolation of the returnees when they eventually arrive in the country. 
 
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Friday that finding hotels to quarantine the returnees had been a serious challenge because the hotels believed using their facilities to isolate the returnees could damage their brand.

Over 2,000 Nigerians in the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, China and other countries had registered with the Nigerian missions in their country of residence for their evacuation after agreeing to subject themselves to mandatory coronavirus testing and 14-day quarantine on arrival in Abuja or Lagos. Most of the countries where the returnees are coming from have far more cases than Nigeria. 
 
As of the time of filing this report, the coronavirus had spread to 26 states and the FCT, with 1,095 cases recorded across the country by the NCDC. While 208 patients had been discharged, 32 had died. 
 
The new cases were 80 in Lagos, 21 in Gombe, five in FCT, two each in Zamfara and Edo, and one each in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto states. 
 
Some countries had equally evacuated their citizens from Nigeria amid the raging virus. 
 
Onyeama had said on Monday that the evacuation would commence next week, noting that two airlines had agreed to bring back the citizens at affordable rates. He noted that the returnees would be brought back in batches of 200 but that their accommodation was the next challenge. 
 
But, while giving an update in Abuja on Friday, the minister said the government was facing the challenge of securing hotels where the returnees could be quarantined. 
 
He explained that he sought the assistance of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, but that the governor could not get hotels in the state to release their premises as isolation centres. 
 
Onyeama said, “The numbers (of Nigerians awaiting evacuation) in the UK alone is about 2,000 and the simple fact of the matter is that we don’t just have the isolation centres, the hospital beds and hotels to accommodate them all. 
 
“We have been looking for hotels in Abuja and Lagos. I spoke this afternoon (Friday) with the governor of Lagos State and it is a real challenge even for the governor to find hotels that are willing to take these people in for 14 days. 
 
“A lot of hotels clearly feel it would damage their brand or it would have some effects on their business. That has been a real problem for us now.” 
 
The minister said the task force tinkered with the idea of directing the returnees to go on self-isolation, but noted that there was no guarantee that they would stay at home. 
 
Onyeama said, “The other alternative is for people to come back and be isolated in their homes. But when you have such numbers, some members of the task force feel there is a risk; that you cannot guarantee that they would stay at home in quarantine and it would be very difficult to monitor that number of people for two weeks. 
 
“So, this is a real dilemma we are facing and you can imagine, if they start coming back and the numbers of positive cases start increasing, then the government would be blamed that why did you bring so many people back? These are all the issues we are grappling with.” 
 
Commenting on the issues facing Nigerians in China, the minister said the Federal Government was addressing the extension of the quarantine period for some Nigerians, adding that the Chinese government had promised to assist them. 
 
On the number of Nigerians who tested positive for the virus in China, he said, “When I met with the Chinese ambassador and he talked about the plane that came to their country in which there were Nigerian passengers who subsequently tested positive, it was within the range of nine, 12 and 13.” 
 
However, a diplomatic correspondence from the Guangzhou Municipal Government to the Federal Government obtained by our source indicated that 72 Nigerians tested positive for COVID-19 in Guangzhou city.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has approved the creation of ‘Neighbourhood Selling Points’ and the use of face masks across all markets in the territory. 
 
The development is part of measures to decongest existing markets and effect more compliance with the social distancing and lockdown policy of government in the wake of the outbreak of Covid-19. 
 
Bello also approved the extension of business hours for markets in the FCT  to now run from 8am to 3 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 
 
Managing Director, Abuja Markets Management Limited AMML, Abubakar Usman Faruk disclosed this while giving an update on the level of compliance by FCT markets with the containment protocols against Covid-19.

Faruk said the minister gave the directives during a review meeting on the Administration’s COVID 19 Pandemic Response Strategy. 
 
“This directive which takes effect from the next market day Saturday April 25, 2020 is against the earlier approved time of 10am to 2pm. 
 
“The Minister also directed the  decongestion of the existing markets through the establishment of  Neighbourhood Selling Points in the various districts within the Federal Capital City by Abuja Markets Management Limited”, he stated. 
 
According to Faruk, the AMML is to liaise with the FCT Area Councils to ensure full implementation of all COVID 19 Pandemic protocols with regards to the markets across all the nooks and crannies of the territory. 
 
While urging FCT residents to abide by all emergency regulations in respect of the Coronavirus, the minister said patronising the neighbourhood markets would help to strengthen the Administration’s response plan. 
 
Malam Bello directed law enforcement agencies to “clamp down on residents who hide under the window of market days to flout Government directives”. 
 
It was gathered that the concept of Neighbourhood Selling Points is aimed at taking pressure off the existing markets in the FCT through the provision of an initial 40 units -adopting either public schools or green areas where they exist- across the various districts in the Federal Capital City FCC. 
 
The idea is to further enhance the attainment of social distancing among residents which is a key requirement for eventual winning of the battle against the virus. 
 
In order to ensure quick set up of the Neighbourhood Selling Points therefore, the Minister further directed relevant FCTA Secretariats, Departments and Agencies to support AMML to actualize this mandate. 
 
Meanwhile, ahead of the take-off of the Neighbourhood Selling Points, “the Minister has insteucted that all users of markets in the FCT must use face mask and also observe social distancing”. 
 
To this end, the minister mandated the AMML boss to ensure that existing selling points for food items within the markets are decentralized immediately to achieve social distancing, even as he encouraged the markets managers to continue to sensitize clients on other hand and respiratory hygiene.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education  is to collaborate with ATB Yechsoft Solutions (Microsoft Company) to train 18,000 teachers to boost Secondary Schools in digital literacy  training. 
 
Mr Kayode Suton, the Ministry Public Affairs Officer, in a statement said that the teachers would receive training during the COVID-19 lockdown beginning from April 27. 
 
The programme is tagged ” Work- From -Home, Remote Teaching and Learning for Lagos State Secondary School. 
 
Suton, said that the teachers would reeive digital  training, mentoring, observation, creating and sharing subject specific content, accessing interactive classes from mobile phones and devices.

He said that the teachers would also have knowledge of diagnosing and understanding learning needs,  challenges, assigning homework, give feedbacks, auto-grade quizzes/tests remotely and internal stakeholders engagement. 
 
The Commissioner for Eduation, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, said the training would have huge benefits on the overall technology transformation of the school system in the State. 
 
The Chairman, Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, (TESCOM ), Mrs Elizabeth Ariyo, said she was satisfied on the robust course content and its  sustainability on the long-term as part of Microsoft Office Corporate Social Responsibility  ( CSR). 
 
Ariyo noted that the programme was easily accessible via mobile smartphones, Web browsers and robust platform for up to one million students, teachers and officials. 
 
She applauded the efforts of Microsoft Office through their representative, ATB Techsoft Solutions, in utilising the stay at home period to equip, train and engage secondary school teachers. 
 
She said that it would enhance teachers  performances in discharging their duties of imparting knowledge in the younger generations through the use of technology. 
 
The TESCOM chariman further said it was  in line with the Education and Technology Pillar in the THEMES Agenda of governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration and vision for teaching.

Abia Government on Friday said it had traced 209 contacts of the two index coronavirus cases in the state and placed them under surveillance in an isolation facility. 
 
The the Abia Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency on Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia. 
 
Okiyi-Kalu said the Abia Rapid Response Team, the Medical Protocol Sub-committee of Abia Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 and the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Umuahia, were traceing other contacts of the index cases. 
 
He said that the contact tracing would continue and would be focused on Ikwuano, Ukwa West and Umuahia North Local Government Areas of the state.

“All the medical personnel involved in management of the patients and their family members are currently in isolation with samples already collected from some of them for testing. 
 
“We are awaiting results for the suspected cases. A team from World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing support,” he said. 
 
Okiyi-Kalu said that the two index cases were septuagenarians and had underlying medical conditions – diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and left ventricular failure. 
 
According to him, the index cases  are stable and receiving care at the isolation centre at FMC, Umuahia. 
 
Okiyi-Kalu said that one of the patients, previously on oxygen support, was breathing well now without any respiratory aid. 
 
The commissioner advised residents of the state to continually observe all the guidelines issued by the NCDC and the state’s inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19. 
 
He said the guidelines were use of face masks and hand sanitisers, regular hand washing with soap under running water, social distancing and leaving the house only to buy food and drugs. 
 
He said, “COVID-19 is real; stay safe for yourself and your loved ones as we do not know who may have been infected.” 
 
Okiyi-Kalu urged the people to ensure that they obeyed the lockdown order, especially with the ongoing index cases contact tracing in the state. 
 
He said that law enforcement agencies would prosecute defaulters in the the mobile courts and in line with the Abia State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020.

The Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON) has averred that broadcasting organizations in South West may shut down operations as a result the lockdown, which is seriously halting the flow of commercials said to be the blood that runs the stations. 
 
The Chairman of BON Zone C(Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti  and Ondo State), Festus Kehinde  made this known in a statement obtained by newsmen. 
 
Kehinde noted that the  economic downturn and low revenue generation occasioned by the total lockdown as a result of coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world, has created a financial cul-de-sac for broadcast stations in the zone. 
 
“The economic downturn and low revenue generation occasioned by the total lockdown as a result of COVID 19 pandemic ravaging the world has created a financial cul-de-sac for broadcast stations in the southwest which may necessitate a shutdown of operations if urgent actions are not taken’, the statement reads.

“As a result of the lockdown, the stream of income of broadcast stations have been stifled with most companies who are also experiencing a dire strait, halting the flow of commercials, the blood that runs the stations”, Kehinde emphasised. 
 
He also stated that the broadcast media in the south west contributes substantially to the nations GDP and the sector is a huge employer of labour, especially youths across genres of professions. 
 
“At this auspicious period when the nation is battling the COVID 19 pandemic, the strategic importance of the broadcast industry cannot be overemphasized as the potent agent of advocacy across the nooks and crannies of the nation’. 
 
“A shutdown of broadcast media in the SW will spell doom to the advocacy efforts of government and unleash a large number of youths on the unemployment market. The consequences of such a shutdown of radio and television houses are better imagined than experienced” 
 
The South West zone of BON however called on Governors and governments of the South West, the leadership of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control,( NCDC), members of the Presidential Taskforce Force on coronavirus and the Central Bank Nigeria to put issues of how to sustain the broadcast industry in the front burner and factor the broadcast industry into the stimulus packages being contemplated.

Executive Secretary, State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), Dr. Abiola Idowu who disowned the list which was said to have emanated from the Ministry of Health stated that the Ministry of Health through HEFAMAA never issued any statement advising the public not to patronize certain facilities exposed to COVID19 cases in the State. 
 
“This is the handiwork of mischief makers and fake news merchant who are bent on causing panic in the community and eroding the successes recorded in the battle against COVID19”. 
 
“I therefore urge residents to disregard the list in its entirety and rely solely on the Ministry of Health and HEFAMAA for information on the operation of health facilities and management of COVID19 cases especially at this critical time”, She said.

Idowu explained that some health facilities might inadvertently admit or treat patients with #COVID19 without knowing. 
 
She stated that if this happens, the facility would be temporarily closed for decontamination while the staff would be trained on Infection, Prevention and Control after which the facility is safe to carry on its normal operations. 
 
She appealed to members of the public to desist from stigmatizing health facilities that might have been exposed to #COVID19 cases as well as patients infected with COVID19 to prevent severe health problems. 
 
“We need people to desist from stigmatizing such facilities, they are only closed for decontamination and once that has been done as well as other necessary protocols, the facility is safe to offer services to the public,’’ the Executive Secretary stated. 
 
Idowu also observed that stigma can drive people to hide the illness to avoid discrimination, prevent people from seeking health care immediately and discourage them from adopting healthy behaviours. 
 
She urged all health facilities operating in Lagos to adhere strictly to the principle on Infection Prevention and Control, maintain high degree of suspicion for #COVID19 and adhere strictly to laid down protocols for COVID19 suspicion. She added that IPC will help reduce human-to-human transmission and secondary infections among close contacts and health care workers. 
 
Highlighting some of the critical components of the protocol, Idowu explained that each healthcare facility must have a plan and a team in place to address COVID19 issues such as triaging and assigning responsibility for notification or communication with the Lagos State COVID19 response team through the 08000CORONA (0800 026 7662)toll free line. 
 
She advised facilities against unauthorized admission and treatment of confirmed COVID19 cases, warning that any facilities caught violating the laid-down protocol of operations especially with regard to COVID19 case management would be sanctioned in line with the extant provision of the law. 
 
She reiterated that only facilities approved by the State Government for COVID19 case management are expected to carry out the management of COVID19 cases. 
 
Idowu urged individuals in the State to desist from issuing panicky statements to the public on operation of health facilities. This according to her is capable of causing confusion and making the fight against the pandemic more challenging.

The Rivers State Task Force enforcing lockdown measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic has killed an unidentified policewoman in the state. 
 
It was gathered that a trigger-happy policeman attached to the task force pulled the killed his colleague, who was not a member of the force. 
 
The incident was said to have happened at Eneka Town, Obio-Akpo Local Government Area, at about 5 pm. 
 
Sources said the tragedy occurred when members of the task force arrived at the area and began to destroy goods belonging to defiant street traders.

The new Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, who confirmed the development, said the policeman attached to the taskforce misused his weapon. 
 
He said: “A policeman attached to the taskforce did the shooting. 
 
“He was shooting anyhow and in the process killed another policewoman. The policewoman was hit by a stray bullet”. 
 
Mukan, who spoke at about 8:20 pm, said the policeman was immediately arrested, disarmed, and subjected to orderly room trial. 
 
“As I am talking to you, the orderly room trial is ongoing. If we conclude it this night, we will arraign him tomorrow”, he said. 
 
He insisted that there was no justification for the killing adding that the law must take its course.

Oyindamola Oluwaseun Ajibare, a caregiver, is a COVID-19 survivor from Lagos. Ajibare took to her social media pages to explain how she survived the deadly virus that has killed over 160,000 people globally.  
 
She, however, alleged that her employer fired her while she was still in isolation. She also said she suspected she contracted the virus from her employer’s 11-year-old son. 
 
Ajibare, who assumed duty at her employer’s on March 11, alleged that she contracted the virus from her employer’s son who returned from the United Kingdom on March 23.

“The day he came back, he was coughing and having a fever. So, the mother called the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to come and test him, his brother and herself, since she claimed she recently returned from London. The NCDC informed that the test result usually comes out after 48 hours, which we all were anticipating.” 
 
Ajibare revealed that the test result was not released until 14 days after the 10-year-old’s sample was taken, but the NCDC stayed in touch with the family, monitoring his temperature. 
 
“While we waited for the result, the boy was always in his room, but as his caregivers, we always had contact with him. But I suspect that it was the day he came that I might have gotten infected because the day the NCDC came to the house to test the boy, I started feeling some symptoms, itchy eyes and aching joints, but I just attributed it to stress,” she said. 
 
Ajibare’s test result returned positive within 48 hours and she was taken into isolation by the NCDC. 
 
“The NCDC called and told me that my result came out positive and I would be taken into isolation. They also asked me to inform my colleague, Chioma Paul, who also tested positive. We immediately went into our room until the NCDC came with an ambulance and we were taken into isolation. This was on Easter Saturday.”

At the Onikan Isolation Centre, Ajibare said she and her colleague met four other patients. While at the centre, “we were tested every two days to determine our status and medications like antiretroviral drugs, Augmentin, vitamin C, etc were given to us.” 
 
Ajibare believes that a patient’s immune system and mental state fight the virus. 
 
“I think your body fights this thing and also the state of your mind because I was never afraid of the virus and stayed positive. I tested negative after nine days. I was the second person to be discharged at the centre. And before I was discharged, we had increased from 6 that we were when I got there to about 30,” she noted. 
 
Having survived such a deadly virus, one would expect Ajibare to be over the moon with excitement, but that is not the case. 
 
“I feel worse after being discharged than even when I was in isolation. I feel traumatised having suffered from the virus, endured isolation and losing my job all at once, plus the stigma that might come with it,” she said. 
 
Ajibare revealed that she got fired by her employer while she was in isolation for asking to be paid her salary at the end of the month. 
 
“Even while in isolation, she felt that asking her if I could be paid my salary was an affront. She went all out to lash out at me and declared then and there that I was fired, forgetting that I got the virus from her son who came from London. I didn’t pick this virus on the street. I was working in her house. If it was that I got the virus from outside her house, I could have understood her not being interested, but she was partially responsible for my being infected. Firing me while I was still dealing with the virus I contracted from your house is wickedness. 
 
“After she fired me, she sent me a message to say that I stole her laptop and she was going to put my story everywhere to make sure nobody employs me. I was very depressed when she accused me of stealing her laptop and decided to call my agency and told them about the situation. When they called her, she denied accusing me of stealing her laptop. My vitals became very bad that the doctors noticed and I was forced to tell them my plight,” she said. 
 
Ajibare hopes that the Lagos State government will address her employer’s ill-treatment of her because “when I told the doctors my plight, they equally complained to the Lagos State COVID-19 support team. I believe the government will look into it.” 
 
She added: “I think the agency called her that was when she started threatening to sue me for N500m. It was her threat of litigation that made me cry out on Facebook. 
 
“I’m out of isolation now and I cannot leave Lagos. I’m putting up with someone. As it is now I’m helpless in all ways. I’m even more depressed now leaving the isolation centre. I have lost my job and I don’t know how long this lockdown is going to take.”

 Nigerian states on Thursday announced the compulsory use of facemasks to halt the spread of coronavirus. 
 
Osun, Ondo, Niger, and Ebonyi joined Lagos, Ogun and Cross Rivers as states where everyone must wear a facemask in public. 
 
Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola said the mandatory use of facemasks will take effect from today.

His Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, said it was in line with resolutions reached by the Southwest governors. 
 
Oyetola reiterated that the sit-at-home order was still in place while urging residents to continue to maintain social distancing and to wash hands regularly. 
 
Niger State government said anyone found without a facemask would be arrested. 
 
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who gave the directive on Thursday, said: “Please stay at home and if you must go out, ensure that you wear a facemask. 
 
“Anyone found outside his house without a facemask will be arrested by security agents. They have been mandated to enforce this directive.” 
 
Bello said over 300,000 locally-made facemasks would be distributed free of charge. 
 
Ondo State yesterday extended the mandatory use of facemasks by one week. It was to take effect today. 
 
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said: “The shift in the commencement date is as a result of the apparent scarcity of the masks in desirable quantities. The government has intensified efforts to produce enough within this period of grace.” 
 
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, said anyone seen in public without a facemask would be flogged. 
 
He directed members of the state Anti-COVID-19 Taskforce to flog anybody seen moving about without a facemask no matter their status. 
 
Umahi said during a broadcast on Wednesday: “Let me warn again that no face mask in Ebonyi State, no public movement. 
 
“If you don’t have facemask and you are out, I am directing the local government chairmen to use their men to inflict minimum compliance which is the use of the cane.” 
 
The governor asked all political appointees to return to their local government areas to monitor compliance. 
 
“If there is any case of the virus in the local government, we will lock down that location 200 radius and quarantine everybody there. No going in, no coming out,” he said. 
 
The Ebonyi COVID-19 taskforce was accused of high-handedness after it allegedly killed Chidi Agwu-Arua during an enforcement operation. 
 
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) blamed the taskforce in Afikpo South for the killing, but the state denied it. 
 
Also yesterday, Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced the extension of the state’s lockdown by another 14 days. 
 
Akwa Ibom State government extended the Quarantine and Movement Restriction Order by three days.

The White House on Thursday pitched “emerging” research on the benefits of sunlight and humidity in diminishing the threat of the coronavirus as President Donald Trump encourages US states to move to reopen their economies. Past studies have not found good evidence that the warmer temperatures and higher humidity of spring and summer will help tamp down the spread of the virus.

But William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security said at a White House briefing that there are “emerging results” from new research that suggest solar light has a powerful effect in killing the virus on surfaces and in the air. 
 
“He said scientists have seen a similar effect from higher temperatures and humidity. A biocontainment lab in Maryland has been conducting testing on the virus since February, Bryan said. “The virus is dying at a much more rapid pace just from exposure to higher temperatures and just from exposure to humidity,” Bryan said. Bryan said having more knowledge about this could help governors when making decisions about how and when to open their state economies. 
 
However, he stressed that the emerging results of the light and heat studies do not replace social distancing recommendations. Trump, who has consistently looked for hopeful news about containing the virus, was asked if it was dangerous to make people think they would be safe by going outside in the heat, considering that so many people have died in Florida. 
 
“I hope people enjoy the sun. And if it has an impact, that’s great,” Trump replied, adding, “It’s just a suggestion from a brilliant lab by a very, very smart, perhaps brilliant man.” “I’m here to present ideas, because we want ideas to get rid of this thing. And if heat is good, and if sunlight is good, that’s a great thing as far as I’m concerned,” the president said. 
 
Trump noted that the researchers were also looking at the effects of disinfectants on the virus and wondered aloud if they could be injected into people, saying the virus “does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.” Bryan said there was no consideration of that. 
 
The president has often talked up prospects for new therapies and offered rosy timelines for the development of a vaccine. Earlier in the month, scientific advisers told the White House there’s no good evidence yet that the heat and humidity of summer will rein in the virus without continued public health measures. Researchers convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine analyzed studies done so far to test virus survival under different laboratory conditions as well as tracking where and how COVID-19 has spread so far. 
 
“Given that countries currently in ‘summer’ climates, such as Australia and Iran, are experiencing rapid virus spread, a decrease in cases with increases in humidity and temperature elsewhere should not be assumed,” the researchers wrote earlier in April in response to questions from the White House Office of Science and Technology. In addition, the report cited the global lack of immunity to the new virus and concluded, “if there is an effect of temperature and humidity on transmission, it may not be as apparent as with other respiratory viruses for which there is at least some preexisting partial immunity.” 
 
They noted that during 10 previous flu pandemics, regardless of what season they started, all had a peak second wave about six months after the virus first emerged. In March, Dr. Michael Ryan, the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief. said, “We have to assume that the virus will continue to have the capacity to spread, and it’s a false hope to say yes, it will just disappear in the summertime like influenza.”

Former Minister of Aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said yesterday that he opposed President Muhammadu Buhari’s style based on principle and conviction. 
 
He said that he could not keep mute in the face of the “dark and sinister forces” represented by the administration.

Fani-Kayode, a defector from the All Progressives Congress (APC), said his constant criticisms of the President in the last five years were driven by “the atrocities of herdsmen and Boko Haram, and the tyranny, wickedness, evil, corruption and incompetence of the regime.” 
 
He noted that he had been “humiliated, persecuted, incarcerated and insulted” than most people in the country due to his unrelenting opposition to the Federal Government. 
 
The former minister, who is undergoing trial for alleged corruption, lamented that Nigerians ignored his advice to reject President Buhari at the polls in 2015, saying that they repeated the same mistake by re-electing him in 2019. 
 
Fani-Kayode, son of the controversial former Nigeria National Democratic Party (NNDP) stalwart and Deputy Premier of defunct Western Region, the late Chief Remi Fani-Kayode, said in a statement in Lagos that he chose to speak for the oppressed members of the society. 
 
Noting that his principled position is risky, he said he took pride in exposing and doing damage to the evil forces more than any citizen. 
 
Fani-Kayode said: “I have also spoken up for the weak, the poor, the oppressed, the deprived, the voiceless and the persecuted across ethnic, religious and party lines. 
 
“And I have done all this right under the noses of those in power and not from distant shores or foreign land. That does not, however, mean that I have lost my humanity. That does not mean that I will relish in anyone’s death. 
 
“That does not mean that I will dance on the grave of others because death comes to us all and doing so diminishes us as human beings and makes us little better than beasts. 
 
He added: “For the last 30 years I have written and spoken out against the atrocities and the hegemony that the people of the South and the Middle Belt and the Christian community have suffered in the hands of our collective oppressors since 1914 and over the last 106 years.” 
 
The former minister spoke on past injustices that have not been redressed, stressing that Southeast continued to count the cost of the 30-month old civil war. 
 
He said: “I have also consistently argued that the people of the Southeast were subjected to nothing less than genocide during the civil war and that if we really want peace, we must make the necessary amends and atonement for this and they must be treated in an accommodating, reasonable and compassionate way and with far more decency and sensitivity.” 
 
Fani-Kayode said the Christian minorities in the North, who have been victims of ”ethnic cleansing, mass murder, crimes against humanity and genocide” in the last 60 years should be treated with respect and dignity. 
 
Peeping into the future, he said: “What lies ahead for our country is frightful and chilling because the extremists and hardliners in the Federal Government are now in full control with no one to moderate, restrain or put them in check.” 
 
He added: “What makes it worse is that the President has hidden himself in the Aso Rock bunker and has refused to step out and offer direction or provide strong and purposeful leadership.” 
 
Fani-Kayode alluded to what he described as “a dangerous power vacuum,” stressing that “unless the President has the presence of mind to resign or to step up to the plate, rid us of the nepotism and the ethnic and religious divisions that plague the land, heal our wounds, change his ways and lead us fairly and boldly, it will not end any time soon.” 
 
Fani-Kayode predicted that “the next few months and years will be difficult, harsh, unpredictable, unstable, bloody, vicious, brutish, hard, retrogressive, divisive, nasty, horrendous and nightmarish for our dear country.” 
 
He also said “there will be little respite for anyone because that is all our government has to offer.” 
 
Fani-Kayode warned that “what is likely to happen in Nigeria will make the ugly events that unfolded in Zaire and the Congo DRC over the last few decades and the horrendous events that occurred in Rwanda in the early 90’s look like a child’s play.” 
 
However, he said although his predictions will come to reality, “the only saving grace is that God, and not any man, shall eventually deliver us.” 
 
Fani-Kayode defended his tribute to the deceased Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, saying it does not translate into the abdication of the struggle. 
 
He said those who were against his position on Kyari “are entitled to their opinion and are free to stop reading my contributions and commentaries.” 
 
He said: “Regardless of their disposition towards me, I will continue to hold on to my views and express them. I owe myself, my God and my nation that much if nothing else.”

The Kano State Government, on Thursday, repatriated, not fewer than 419 Almajiris to Katsina and handed them over to the state government. 
 
While receiving the Almajiris, the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Dr Mustapha Inuwa, said all the returnees would be transferred to NYSC camp in Katsina to undergo another round of health examination, from where they would be transported to their respective localities across the state.

A statement, by the Director of Press, Abdullahi Ya’ardua, said Inuwa advised parents to desist from sending their wards to other states, thereby exposing them to hazards in the name of seeking religious knowledge. 
 
Earlier, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Muhammed Kiru, who led the Kano State team, to the handover at Godan Tukun Gaya at Katsina/Kano border, expressed joy with the speedy response of the Katisina State Government. 
 
Meanwhile, the Kano State Committee Relief Funds Task Force disclosed that the State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, would launch the distribution of relief materials from Thursday (today).

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has confirmed the first COVID-19-related death in the state. 
 
Makinde gave the confirmation via a post on his Twitter handle on Wednesday. 
 
According to him, the patient died at the University College Hospital before the result of his confirmation test for the virus came out. 
 
He added that contact tracing had since commenced.

The governor said, “The COVID-19 confirmation test for one suspected case came back positive. The patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before his result came out today (Wednesday). Contact tracing has already commenced. 
 
“As reported earlier, one confirmed case was transferred to Lagos. So, there are currently five active cases in Oyo State. 
 
“We thank APIN Health Initiatives, which donated medical supplies and offered their factory as the venue for the production of one million face masks; and all others who donated in cash and kind towards the government’s effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 
 
“We urge the following categories of people, who have not already done so, to call the Emergency Operations Centre for the ongoing drive through testing at Adamasingba Stadium: people who believe they could have come into contact with a COVID-19 case in Oyo State; people who returned to Nigeria from abroad within the last one month and their contacts; people with respiratory symptoms and health-care workers who have been in contact with the high-risk groups, above. 
 
“Please, keep following the directives of the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force. Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, regularly. Also, continue to maintain social distancing. Gatherings in Oyo State are limited to a maximum of ten persons.”
