From our data, 191,000 Lagosians are between the ages of 60 and above and we filtered the data and arrived at 25,000 people, who responded to our text messages and they all got our food packages.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “We have also reached out to about 5,000 people living with disabilities in our seven clusters of visual impairment, physical disabilities, albinism, dwarfism, and other clusters across the state. We have also reached out to riverine communities starting from Irewe in Ojo, Ogun in Epe and 116 riverine communities with more than 5,000 households. We have also selected groups, artisans, trade unions and others in the informal sectors and depend on daily wages through their leaders.”<br /> <br /> Earlier, the chairperson of the Victims Support Fund COVID-19 Taskforce, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, said the group, which had focused on the north-east in the last five years, decided to target frontline COVID-19 states to assist people in coping with the effects of the lockdown.<br /> <br /> “We know Lagos is at the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cases keep increasing every day. We have been increasingly worried about how we can provide support for the state government to efficiently implement the lockdown order because we are concerned about the community transmission of coronavirus. If people are hungry, they will not stay at home and it will be hard to flatten the curve.<br /> <br /> “We are donating 5,100 pieces each of 10 kilogrammes of rice, beans, garri, vegetable oil and salt and we are targeting 30,000 to 40,000 households across Lagos metropolis through 10 of our partner NGOs to reach the poor and vulnerable,” she added.<br /> <br /> According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, more than half of the over 1000 confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria were recorded in Lagos.<br /> <br /> The state has also been on Federal-Government ordered lockdown since 11pm on March 30 as part of measures to halt the spread of the lethal infection.

It was in the process of further inspection that we discovered that the rice had been infested with weevils.<br /> <br /> “On that basis, we formed a committee to re-inspect it so we can be sure of what we have received.<br /> <br /> “We don’t want to create another problem while providing solution to another one. We have inspected it; we have done random selection and we have seen that similar things apply across the board.<br /> <br /> “We have agreed to return them to the source but if there are good ones with good quality that could be sent to us as replacement, we will be glad to receive them.”<br /> <br /> Akande promised that the situation would not in anyway delay the planned distribution of palliatives by the state government.<br /> <br /> He added, “We all know that a good number of food items have been received by the Food Security Committee of the Task Force and they would be distributed in the next couple of days. We have in place a robust system for distribution and that we have finalised on it.”

Many states had also followed suit.<br /> <br /> But as the number of COVID-19 cases increased, the President on April 13 extended the lockdown for 14 more days.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> As of the time of filing this report, the coronavirus had spread to 26 states and the FCT, with 1,095 cases recorded across the country by the NCDC. While 208 patients had been discharged, 32 had died.<br /> <br /> The new cases were 80 in Lagos, 21 in Gombe, five in FCT, two each in Zamfara and Edo, and one each in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto states.<br /> <br /> Speaking on Friday at a media briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said it was not yet time to relax the lockdown.<br /> <br /> He noted that although the lockdown was having negative effects on the economy as it was impeding Nigerians’ ability to go about their daily activities, he said it was vital to be patient and endure the lockdown further to ensure a safe and healthy society when the economy would be reopened.<br /> <br /> He said, “We will eventually exit this stage and restart our normal life but that stage is still a while to come and I ask for your endurance, support and patience. Lots of efforts are going on across the world to find new therapy, to find vaccine.<br /> <br /> “Everybody is pushing hard along this direction. We need unprecedented level of caution to continue carrying out the preventive measure that we have advised many times on this platform.<br /> <br /> “Many families have not been able to bury their dead, rescheduled their marriages and baptism and everything they are doing. In a way, life is in suspense. Everyone recognises the sacrifice Nigerians have made but we really have to encourage one another to continue to a position where we can relax some of that (lockdown) but until we get to that place, we have to continue in the short term.<br /> <br /> “We are working hard to reach a point where we can relax some of these measures but we are not there yet. We ask you to join us to continue this journey with us and amplify these messages that we are giving. We are happy to have the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress here with us today (Friday).”<br /> <br /> Ihekweazu added that the citizens must remember that the most vulnerable people were the elderly and people with other illnesses.<br /> <br /> “We must protect them. Most of the countries where the returnees are coming from have far more cases than Nigeria.<br /> <br /> As of the time of filing this report, the coronavirus had spread to 26 states and the FCT, with 1,095 cases recorded across the country by the NCDC. While 208 patients had been discharged, 32 had died.<br /> <br /> The new cases were 80 in Lagos, 21 in Gombe, five in FCT, two each in Zamfara and Edo, and one each in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna and Sokoto states.<br /> <br /> Some countries had equally evacuated their citizens from Nigeria amid the raging virus.<br /> <br /> Onyeama had said on Monday that the evacuation would commence next week, noting that two airlines had agreed to bring back the citizens at affordable rates. He noted that the returnees would be brought back in batches of 200 but that their accommodation was the next challenge.<br /> <br /> But, while giving an update in Abuja on Friday, the minister said the government was facing the challenge of securing hotels where the returnees could be quarantined.<br /> <br /> He explained that he sought the assistance of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, but that the governor could not get hotels in the state to release their premises as isolation centres.<br /> <br /> Onyeama said, “The numbers (of Nigerians awaiting evacuation) in the UK alone is about 2,000 and the simple fact of the matter is that we don’t just have the isolation centres, the hospital beds and hotels to accommodate them all.<br /> <br /> “We have been looking for hotels in Abuja and Lagos. I spoke this afternoon (Friday) with the governor of Lagos State and it is a real challenge even for the governor to find hotels that are willing to take these people in for 14 days.<br /> <br /> “A lot of hotels clearly feel it would damage their brand or it would have some effects on their business. That has been a real problem for us now.”<br /> <br /> The minister said the task force tinkered with the idea of directing the returnees to go on self-isolation, but noted that there was no guarantee that they would stay at home.<br /> <br /> Onyeama said, “The other alternative is for people to come back and be isolated in their homes. But when you have such numbers, some members of the task force feel there is a risk; that you cannot guarantee that they would stay at home in quarantine and it would be very difficult to monitor that number of people for two weeks.<br /> <br /> “So, this is a real dilemma we are facing and you can imagine, if they start coming back and the numbers of positive cases start increasing, then the government would be blamed that why did you bring so many people back? These are all the issues we are grappling with.”<br /> <br /> Commenting on the issues facing Nigerians in China, the minister said the Federal Government was addressing the extension of the quarantine period for some Nigerians, adding that the Chinese government had promised to assist them.<br /> <br /> On the number of Nigerians who tested positive for the virus in China, he said, “When I met with the Chinese ambassador and he talked about the plane that came to their country in which there were Nigerian passengers who subsequently tested positive, it was within the range of nine, 12 and 13.”<br /> <br /> However, a diplomatic correspondence from the Guangzhou Municipal Government to the Federal Government obtained by our source indicated that 72 Nigerians tested positive for COVID-19 in Guangzhou city.

A team from World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing support,” he said.<br /> <br /> Okiyi-Kalu said that the two index cases were septuagenarians and had underlying medical conditions – diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and left ventricular failure.<br /> <br /> According to him, the index cases  are stable and receiving care at the isolation centre at FMC, Umuahia.<br /> <br /> Okiyi-Kalu said that one of the patients, previously on oxygen support, was breathing well now without any respiratory aid.<br /> <br /> The commissioner advised residents of the state to continually observe all the guidelines issued by the NCDC and the state’s inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19.<br /> <br /> He said the guidelines were use of face masks and hand sanitisers, regular hand washing with soap under running water, social distancing and leaving the house only to buy food and drugs.<br /> <br /> He said, “COVID-19 is real; stay safe for yourself and your loved ones as we do not know who may have been infected.”<br /> <br /> Okiyi-Kalu urged the people to ensure that they obeyed the lockdown order, especially with the ongoing index cases contact tracing in the state.<br /> <br /> He said that law enforcement agencies would prosecute defaulters in the the mobile courts and in line with the Abia State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020.

The consequences of such a shutdown of radio and television houses are better imagined than experienced”<br /> <br /> The South West zone of BON however called on Governors and governments of the South West, the leadership of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control,( NCDC), members of the Presidential Taskforce Force on coronavirus and the Central Bank Nigeria to put issues of how to sustain the broadcast industry in the front burner and factor the broadcast industry into the stimulus packages being contemplated.

She also said she suspected she contracted the virus from her employer’s 11-year-old son.<br /> <br /> Ajibare, who assumed duty at her employer’s on March 11, alleged that she contracted the virus from her employer’s son who returned from the United Kingdom on March 23.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “The day he came back, he was coughing and having a fever. So, the mother called the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to come and test him, his brother and herself, since she claimed she recently returned from London. The NCDC informed that the test result usually comes out after 48 hours, which we all were anticipating.”<br /> <br /> Ajibare revealed that the test result was not released until 14 days after the 10-year-old’s sample was taken, but the NCDC stayed in touch with the family, monitoring his temperature.<br /> <br /> “While we waited for the result, the boy was always in his room, but as his caregivers, we always had contact with him. But I suspect that it was the day he came that I might have gotten infected because the day the NCDC came to the house to test the boy, I started feeling some symptoms, itchy eyes and aching joints, but I just attributed it to stress,” she said.<br /> <br /> Ajibare’s test result returned positive within 48 hours and she was taken into isolation by the NCDC.<br /> <br /> “The NCDC called and told me that my result came out positive and I would be taken into isolation. They also asked me to inform my colleague, Chioma Paul, who also tested positive. We immediately went into our room until the NCDC came with an ambulance and we were taken into isolation. While at the centre, “we were tested every two days to determine our status and medications like antiretroviral drugs, Augmentin, vitamin C, etc were given to us.”<br /> <br /> Ajibare believes that a patient’s immune system and mental state fight the virus.<br /> <br /> “I think your body fights this thing and also the state of your mind because I was never afraid of the virus and stayed positive. I tested negative after nine days. I was the second person to be discharged at the centre. And before I was discharged, we had increased from 6 that we were when I got there to about 30,” she noted.<br /> <br /> Having survived such a deadly virus, one would expect Ajibare to be over the moon with excitement, but that is not the case.<br /> <br /> “I feel worse after being discharged than even when I was in isolation. I feel traumatised having suffered from the virus, endured isolation and losing my job all at once, plus the stigma that might come with it,” she said.<br /> <br /> Ajibare revealed that she got fired by her employer while she was in isolation for asking to be paid her salary at the end of the month.<br /> <br /> “Even while in isolation, she felt that asking her if I could be paid my salary was an affront. She went all out to lash out at me and declared then and there that I was fired, forgetting that I got the virus from her son who came from London. I didn’t pick this virus on the street. I was working in her house. If it was that I got the virus from outside her house, I could have understood her not being interested, but she was partially responsible for my being infected. Firing me while I was still dealing with the virus I contracted from your house is wickedness.<br /> <br /> “After she fired me, she sent me a message to say that I stole her laptop and she was going to put my story everywhere to make sure nobody employs me. I was very depressed when she accused me of stealing her laptop and decided to call my agency and told them about the situation. When they called her, she denied accusing me of stealing her laptop. My vitals became very bad that the doctors noticed and I was forced to tell them my plight,” she said.<br /> <br /> Ajibare hopes that the Lagos State government will address her employer’s ill-treatment of her because “when I told the doctors my plight, they equally complained to the Lagos State COVID-19 support team. I believe the government will look into it.”<br /> <br /> She added: “I think the agency called her that was when she started threatening to sue me for N500m. It was her threat of litigation that made me cry out on Facebook.<br /> <br /> “I’m out of isolation now and I cannot leave Lagos. I’m putting up with someone. As it is now I’m helpless in all ways. I’m even more depressed now leaving the isolation centre. I have lost my job and I don’t know how long this lockdown is going to take.”
