The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Saturday night condemned the South East Governor’s Forum over their proscription of the activities of the organization which it described as most peaceful body in the world.<br />

In a statement signed by its media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the organization said the speed with which the governors announced the proscription of IPOB activities had proved that the governors would remain slaves in the hands of their Hausa Fulani masters.<br />

According to IPOB, it was unfortunate that the governors declared the group as illegal without condemning the barbaric and unprovoked killings of IPOB people in Umuahia, Aba and Port Harcourt, as well as the continuous killing, raping of women and destruction of farm crops by herdsmen masquerading as cattle rearers in Biafra land.<br />

IPOB said: “We want to find out how the governors who do not know the foundations of IPOB, would make such a statement when they know that IPOB had staged 297 peaceful protests and rallies both at home and in Diaspora without a single record of violence or crime. With the record on ground, IPOB under Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is one of the most peaceful organized freedom fighting group in the world today.<br />

“It is dangerous that the governors who are the chief security officers of their respective states in the zone would decide to hand over their people to the enemies who were out to kill, maim and destroy because of their selfish reasons. “We are also aware that late Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and General Philip Effiong protected their people during the first pogrom and ethnic cleansing from 1966’to 1970. “These governors and their collaborators are in the forefront to eliminate our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other peaceful members of IPOB.<br />

It is on record that IPOB activities are peaceful since the inception and nobody can prove where and how IPOB activities became violent over night.<br />
<br />
“The solders brought in to eliminate or murder our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB members, including the innocent civilians across Biafra land, are still going from house to house picking anyone suspected to be IPOB or seen with any Biafra insignia. “IPOB under Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must remain a nonviolent group in the pursuit for Biafra freedom, despite the high handedness meted against IPOB members and our leader.”

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said the ongoing Operation Python Dance was a field training exercise.<br />

Deputy Director, Public Relations 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Col. Sagir Musa, disclosed this in a statement which was made available to journalists in Enugu.<br />
<br />
Sagir said the operation was not targeted at anybody.<br />
<br />
The statement read, “The 82 Division, Nigerian Army, is currently on a field training exercise code-named exercise EGWU EKE II (Python Dance).<br />
<br />
“The exercise which started on 15th September and will last till 14th October 2017 is meant to sharpen the skills of 82 Division troops in the conduct of internal security operations.<br />
<br />
“The exercise is also aimed at combating the security challenges in the South-East and is well equipped to deal with the rising cases of insecurity such as kidnappings, armed forces farmers-herdsmen clashes, cultism, violent secessionist agitations, insurgency among others.<br />
<br />
“Please note, Exercise EGWU EKE II is not targeted at any individual or group, as law abiding citizens are advised to go about their normal businesses without fear.”

Okorocha spoke on Saturday, in Owerri, at the new yam festival organised by the State Council of Traditional Rulers, headed by HRM Eze Samuel Ohir.<br />

The governor added that everyone that loves Ndigbo has condemned the activities of IPOB.<br />
<br />
Okorocha said, “I can see that the unity of Nigeria is today dramatised in the land of Imo State. I say so because growing up as a child, I never knew where I came from because I found myself somewhere in Plateau State as a little boy and the only language I could speak was the Hausa language.<br />
<br />
“I had no choice because that was where I was brought up. So, I grew up being born an Igbo man, but was reared in the North and was made financially buoyant in the South-West.”<br />
<br />
“So, I have declared myself that in no way should I be found as a tribalised Nigerian.<br />
<br />
“I will remain detribalised as long as Igbo gave me parentage and childhood, as long as North reared and nurtured me and for as long as South-West empowered me.<br />
<br />
“My community and my identity is Nigeria.”

The Eze Igbo in Zamfara State, Igwe Egbuna Obijiaku, has said that the agitation for secession by the Indigenous People of Biafra does not mean good for Igbo, because it was aimed at disrupting the peace and stability of the country.<br />

He also commended the South East Governors’ Forum for outlawing the activities of the IPOB.<br />

Obijiaku, who gave the commendation on Saturday while speaking to newsmen in Gusau, said that Igbo in Zamfara were not in support of the activities of IPOB.<br />

He urged the Igbo community in the state to disregard the Biafra agitation.<br />
According to him, the IPOB agitations for Biafra nation, apart from its threat to national unity, peace and stability, is also a big threat to Igbo economic stability.<br />
<br />
“We are solidly behind our leaders and governors in this regard. We are also in support of the decision of the Forum of Igbo traditional leaders of all the 19 Northern states,” he said.<br />
<br />
“If we look at the entire population of Igbo community, only 40 per cent are living on Igbo land. About 40 per cent are living in the Northern parts of Nigeria, almost 15 percent are living in South Western parts of the country and the remaining five per cent are living abroad.<br />
<br />
“Therefore, to me, any agitation calling for separation from this country will not be good for Igbo. We are living in a secular country: that was how God has created us and that is how He wants us to be.<br />
<br />
“It is very unfortunate for somebody who has not been in Nigeria over the years to just come and be calling us to join him in unlawful agitations to break peace and stability that were built over the years.<br />
<br />
“This IPOB agitation does not mean good for Igbo. In fact, it was aimed at disrupting the peace and stability of the country,” he said.<br />
<br />
He, therefore, urged the entire Igbo community in Zamfara to disregard such unlawful agitation and go about their normal activities.<br />
<br />
“We should continue to live peaceably with one another, we should cooperate with security agencies and government in maintaining peace and stability in the country”, he added.<br />
<br />
He said over the past 20 years, the Igbo community had been living peacefully in Zamfara without any harassment and that they should continue to maintain it. (NAN)

The Nigerian Communications Commission has allayed fears that telecommunication masts cause cancer and other health problems.<br />

NCC Zonal Controller, South-East, Mrs. Emilia Nwokoro, who spoke during a consumer conversation forum organised by the Commission in Enugu, said several studies have been conducted to ascertain whether telecommunication masts pose health risks.<br />
<br />
Nwokoro explained that the researches did not provide any evidence that the telecommunication infrastructure was harmful to human beings.<br />
<br />
“A number of studies have investigated the effects of radiofrequency fields on brain electrical activity, cognitive function, sleep, heart rate and blood pressure in volunteers.<br />
<br />
“To date, research does not suggest any consistent evidence of adverse health effects from exposure to radiofrequency fields at levels below those that cause tissue heating.<br />
<br />
“In line with the position of International Telecommunications Union supported by International Council on Non-ionizing, Radiation Protection and the World Health Organisation, NCC has maintained that as at today, there is no conclusive evidence to show correlation between the electromagnetic fields from telecommunications masts and health risk to individuals around these infrastructure,” she said.<br />
<br />
Nwokoro assured that NCC would continue to educate the public on issues concerning public health and telecommunication services.

Osinbajo made the commitment while speaking at the reception in Yola in honour of the new President of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the Most Reverend Musa Filibus.<br />

According to him, Christians are encouraged to pursue justice and reconciliation with people of other faith.<br />

President Buhari stated this while reviewing the combined passing out parade of the cadets of the 64 Regular Course of the Army, Navy and Air Force), the 65 Regular Course of the Navy and Air Force), and the Short Service Course 44 of the Army.<br />

The President who was represented by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo said, the swift evolution in suicide bombings is a perfect illustration of the nature of the threats that nations face today, which are unpredictable, asymmetric, constantly adapting to changing conditions and driven by a compulsive need to inflict maximum damage with minimal effort.<br />
<br />
Addressing the newly commissioned officers of the challenges ahead of them, Buhari said, the world has gotten to a stage where people can now learn production of explosive device on the internet.<br />
<br />
He therefore, challenged the military to answer the question of how to defeat the ideologies that promote mindless killings and anarchy.<br />
<br />
According to him, “The world has changed a great deal in the time since today’s graduating classes enrolled into the NDA. The threats that confront us a nation and as a planet have evolved and continue to evolve. Forty years ago, a Speech like this would have been situated firmly within the context of the Cold War with its well-defined ideologies, and distinct warring parties.<br />
<br />
“Today we speak of non-State Actors and of asymmetric warfare, and are confronted by enemies that whose identities are as nebulous as their motivations. It feels like yesterday when the earliest high-profile Boko Haram suicide bombings happened in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“If I recall correctly the bombing of the Police Headquarters in Abuja was the first major incident to hit the national consciousness. It was a surreal moment, something that no one associated with Nigeria. It was not uncommon, at that time, to hear people argue that the perpetrators had to have been of foreign origin, as it was not in the nature or personality of Nigerians to be suicide bombers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“This was only about six years ago. In the time since we have come to grow accustomed to suicide bombings and by Nigerians no less. The targets evolved rapidly, from symbols of authority like the Police Headquarters and the United Nations Building in Abuja, to encompass soft targets bus stations, religious houses, markets. And again very quickly we started to see a trend of female suicide bombers.<br />
<br />
“It is worthy of note that until about 2013, the phenomenon of female suicide bombers was virtually unknown in the Boko Haram insurgency. A short four years later, it is one of the defining elements of the insurgency, young girls, some not even teenagers yet, laden with explosives and sent off as harbingers of death and destruction.<br />
<br />
“This is therefore the question we ought to be asking ourselves: are our Armed Forces evolving with a similar speed and urgency, are they adapting with a similar nimbleness? How do we evolve rules of engagement in asymmetric warfare situations? Should we be redefining the borders of the Geneva Convention in the light of military engagements with armed militant combatants? Can we observe the same human rights rules where suicide bombers and persons determined to die and take with them as many innocent lives as possible? Are they enemy we must confront? What are the borders of the right to privacy and freedom of expression on the internet? What is the responsibility of Nations of the world in policing the internet, which has become a virtual training ground for much good and as much evil.<br />
<br />
“Some of the early analyses of yesterday’s bombing in a London tube suggest that tutorials for making the explosive devices used are available on the internet. How can the military get ahead of the curve on communications in the age of the fast, cheap and available communication for all?<br />
<br />
“We must also answer the question of how to defeat the ideologies that promote mindless killings and anarchy. But just as important as these issues around conflict are the issues around how the military can in the process of innovating or thinking through military uses of science and technology can add real value to the society and nation it has sworn to defend.<br />
<br />
“At this point let me say that I am pleased to note that the NDA has itself been positioning itself as a hub for innovation. I am already aware of inventions such as an Automated Pop-Up Target System, a Multi-Purpose Combat Mobile Robot, and a Perimeter Surveillance Robot, which the NDA has showcased at various science and technology exhibitions in the recent past. This is laudable and I urge you to sustain the culture.<br />
<br />
“I would also like to urge you to collaborate more extensively with the private sector, for research and innovation. All around the country technology hubs are springing up that are attracting our Nigeria’s brightest talent, and breaking new technological ground. I am convinced that the military should make its presence felt in this area.<br />
<br />
“Let me of course also commend the management of the NDA for your efforts so far in adapting your curriculum and programmes to contemporary realities. I have been told of the recent paradigm shift in the Academy’s training calendar, such that Naval and Air Force cadets now spend only four years in the Academy and then move to their respective bases, in place of the old system that saw them spend all five years in the Academy. By allowing them to spend their final year within their respective bases is a clear indication of the commitment to producing better-trained and better-prepared Naval and Air Force graduates”, he said.<br />
<br />
The President therefore charged the new officers to contribute their own quota to the defence of their fatherland, saying that, they belong to a special breed of young Nigerians, who model the highest form of patriotism and love of country as they have sworn to defend the nation with their lives, as armed forces personnel.<br />
<br />
“You have an obligation to commit yourself to the never-ending task of nation-building, especially at a time like this when our country is urgently in need of peace, unity and cohesion. As you join your senior colleagues in the field, you will be obligated to contribute your own quota to the defence of your fatherland.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that police officials made various arrests of young men who have allegedly defrauded wealthy men in Lagos, Zamfara, Rivers and Abuja by presenting themselves as women.<br />
<br />
Some of the residents who spoke to NAN said that it was astonishing how young Nigerians seem to be accepting the idea of cross-dressing.<br />
<br />
Joy Nduka, a makeup artist, said that she was surprised by the fact that more Nigerians were aaccepting the idea of cross-dressing.<br />
<br />
“I first heard of this concept in Nigeria last year when it was in the news that some men dressed like women to dupe rich men they met at bars and hotels.<br />
<br />
“I found it a bit funny at first that some men could be easily deceived in that manner by their fellow men.<br />
<br />
“However, I later realised that we all focused on the men who were robbed and not on the men who were comfortable dressing like women to commit the crimes.<br />
<br />
“It shows the trend is gradually being accepted among Nigerians,’’ she said.<br />
<br />
Victor Itamunoala, a marketer, said “We have always had popular TV personality, Denrele Edun, who remain a controversial figure because of his cross-dressing fashion.<br />
<br />
“His fashion concept has always had a hint of feminism in it be it with makeup, hairstyles, high shoes and more.<br />
<br />
“Nigerians were against his fashion but these days, many people seem to support him and he has inspired more men to dress that way.<br />
<br />
“We have gradually seen a number of Nigerian social media personalities become popular for being cross-dressers and the most popular one today is the man that calls himself the `Snapchat queen’, Bobrisky.<br />
<br />
“Bobrisky, originally known as Okuneye Idris, has gradually become a celebrity by acting and dressing as a woman.<br />
<br />
“We all watched him transform from a dark skinned man to a light skinned woman who now travels the world and gets paid in pounds and dollars by Nigerian fans who take pictures with him.<br />
<br />
“This is insane and appalling, especially as all these famous cross-dressers claim to have connections among politicians.<br />
<br />
“The next thing we will see is same sex marriage being legalised in Nigeria, this is how such things start’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Another resident, Ndidi John said that the trend was catching on among youths because of the influence of foreign movies.<br />
<br />
“You cannot eliminate the role of social media, foreign films and now Nigerian celebrities that engaged in cross dressing on the youths.<br />

“But I personally believe that most of them will grow out of it as the advance in age and become less rebellious,” she said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned against the present tension in the country degenerating into a war situation.<br />

Obasanjo spoke while responding to the wave of violent agitation in the Eastern part of the country for Biafra republic led by Nnamdi Kanu, Obasanjo in an interview with Newsweek Magazine in London.<br />

“Those who fought in the war in Biafra will not want to fight any other war,” he said adding that “I have fought one war too many in Nigeria; I don’t want to see another.”<br />
<br />
While noting that the army’s “heavy boot” response to pro-Biafra sentiment is “not the solution,” he also said that the secession craved by IPOB is not the way forward either.<br />
<br />
To resolve the crisis, Obasanjo said there was nothing wrong with President Muhammadu Buhari meeting with Kanu.<br />
<br />
“I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it,” Obasanjo told Newsweek.<br />
<br />
“I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future,” Obasanjo said adding that “There’s no easy way out.”

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Fanwo, had in his response to the strike notice, alleged that none of the signatories to the letter was a civil servant.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He added that the signatories were not the union leaders the state government had been relating with.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">However, the TUC scribe debunked the allegations as being far from the truth.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">James noted that the signatories are well known to labour leaders who had at one time or the other related with the state government.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“As the Secretary of TUC, I have had cause to exchange correspondence with the state government on several occasions. I was part of the first staff screening committee headed by Paul Okuntimo. I also served, as representative of Labour, in the final screening committee. To say I and other signatories are unknown labour leaders is not true.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Secretaries of labour unions are not civil servants, they are employees of the Union seconded to different state to manage their respective secretariats. It is the duty of Union secretaries to sign correspondence from the secretariat.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The government should rather focus on the demands contained in the strike notice and find ways to meet the demands to avert industrial action. As we speak, the state government has not reached out to Labour to discuss how they will meet our demands. However, we met with the committee constituted by the State House of Assembly on Thursday and we tabled our demands before it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We stand by our demands that workers’ July and August salaries must be paid. This is basic. Some workers in the state are owed 19 months salary as at today. Just yesterday, we were informed that the Principal of Community Secondary School, Ayere, Mr. Musari Rahman, who has not been paid salary in the last 19 months has passed away. This is just one of the many unfortunate reports we get from workers across the state.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We also demand that government rescind its decision on clocking in and out policy in the public service of Kogi state, which aims at casualising the service on daily pay basis. This negates the provisions of National Councils on Establishment’s principles and practices guiding the civil service in the country,” he said.</div>

You may not know why we should thank God for making Buhari the President of Nigeria.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”Today, what our own could not give to us, Buhari has given to us. An Ogbia man, Dr. Eruani Azibapu, has been given a licence to build a private refinery. We had an opportunity given to the people of Ogbia, Nembe and Brass to own oil blocks in the past, did we get any? No.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”But Buhari has given one of us, a woman, an oil block. That is why I am saying we should appreciate Buhari. He is doing well for the Niger Delta people. Because if the refinery is built today, it will take not less than 10,000 workers. Will Brass, Ogbia and Nembe, not get up to 3,000 workers there? Then, would you not be empowered?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”So, are we not supposed to appreciate Buhari? The oil block we could not get is to be given to one us. If oil block is given to an Ogbia, Nembe or Brass person, are we not going to get one of the Alakijas, are we not going to get one of the Danjumas. Oil block is one the things that make those people billionaires. Today, Danjuma can give somebody N2bn without batting an eyelid.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”Finally, I want to also say we need to appreciate Buhari for fighting corruption and bringing positive change in the country. My friend, one of the serving senators from Bayelsa State, asked me, so, if Buhari had not taken over government, so we would not know the quantum of amount coming into Bayelsa State.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Ikisikpo regretted that when the Ijaw had the opportunity to develop the region, they misused it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">For instance, he said that some of the presidential aides from Bayelsa squandered the commonwealth of the people through excessive greed and reckless spendings and made it impossible for the region to feel the impact of governance.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said:  ”I want to tell you some bitter truth. There is an adage that says, ‘before you remove the speck in someone’s eyes, first remove the log in your own eyes.’</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”God gave us an elephant but we allowed the elephant to get rotten. Some may not get the adage perhaps. If we had judiciously used that elephant properly, I think by now, Bayelsa East would have become a ‘small Dubai’.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”But we misused the opportunity. Through that opportunity, we could not get oil blocks, through that opportunity; we could not get even modular refineries in Bayelsa East.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Bayelsa East is the first place to produce crude oil in Nigeria, but go to Oloibiri where oil was first discovered in commercial quantity, the place is a thick forest, where you can kill the biggest animal on earth. Is it supposed to be so?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”When I entered the House of Representatives in 2003, my first motion was how to make Oloibiri a place that would be conducive to every Ogbia person, every Nembe person and every Brass person. I moved a motion that the Federal Government should build an oil museum there. A beautiful resolution was given, but nothing happened.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”At the House of Reps, the first position given to me was deputy chairman, House Committee on Appropriation. The former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswan, was the chairman.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I told him in our first budget meetings that what I wanted was the Yenegwe-Okaki-Kolo-Nembe-Brass Road. When we met with the Budget Office, they asked if the road was a federal government road. I said yes. And they said, go and bring documents. We got the documents at Federal Ministry of Works and presented them.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">”That was a project that was started during Melford Okilo’s administration, but was abandoned and went into oblivion. Today, the project has been forsaken. Like I said, we were given an elephant, if the elephant that we were given, had used the opportunity very well, that road would have moved up to Brass today.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Eneche made the declaration, citing the “formation of a Biafra secret service, militant possession and use of weapons as well as physical confrontation of troops” as part of reasons for the declaration.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But IPOB have accused him of usurping the roles and responsibilities of the judiciary, arguing that he had no legal backing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“This declaration is not only judicially provocative and belligerent, the Idoma-born army officer acted beyond the mandate of the Nigerian army as specified in sections 10 & 11 of CAP A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (L.F.N.) 2004 and in section-217(2) of the Nigerian fraudulent constitution,” read a statement by Emma Nmezu and Clifford Iroanya, who identified themselves as spokespersons of the organisation.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Recall that on March 1, 2017, the Honourable Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako of the federal high court, Abuja declared in her ruling that IPOB is not an unlawful society/organisation.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako gave her judgment having studied the conditions for an organisation to be deemed unlawful as stipulated in section-62 of CAP C38 L.F.N. 2004.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Up till this day, that ruling from Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako has not been upturned by any court.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“And for this reason, Major-General John Enenche (though a Biafran from Idoma land) must be dismissed from the Nigerian army, arrested and brought to trial in the court of Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">They added that what constitute the “acts of terrorism” are given in the terrorism (prevention) Act of 2011, where “section 2 stipulated that only a judge can declare an organisation proscribed based on proven case of acts of terrorism and such case will be presented to the judge through an application made by the attorney-general or the national security adviser or the inspector general of police with the approval of the president. The judge’s declaration will thereafter be gazetted”.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The questions that now beg for answers are: (1) Does the director of defence information (DDI) of the Nigerian army (Major-General John Enenche) fall into any of the three categories of persons that should make an application to a Judge to declare IPOB a terrorist organization?” they asked.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“(2) Which judge did the DDI make such application to and was it approved by the president prior to submitting the application?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“(3) Where is the approval given to the DDI by the judge? (4) When and where was the Judge’s declaration gazetted?”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“In particular, this deceitful act is a violation and interference into the judicial arm of government and it is an overreach. It is also a deliberate act in contempt of a subsisting ruling in a competent court of law.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“IPOB, whether led by Nnamdi Kanu or led by the DOS, is not a terrorist organization because no court of competent jurisdiction has so declared it. The so-called declaration by Major-General John Enenche is null and void and of no effect.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Fellow Nigerians, let me confess my admiration for security forces generally. It is not just because of the cleanliness and crispiness of their uniform or the famed discipline that they imbue in their members. It is because I find their job too risky. I often wonder why any man or woman would voluntarily sign his or her death warrant. For me, they appear more like suicide bombers. As a toddler in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, I remember being told by older people that “soldiers are trained to kill” and we were told to avoid them.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The myth flying around included that most of them were recruited without having much education. But as I grew up, I began to acquire a special fascination for them, especially the elite squads in the Navy and the Air Force. I would later interact with many soldiers at home and abroad. I love their uniforms, jackboots and in particular their menacing guns.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">I still imagine till this day what it takes to be a killer. We were told soldiers were regularly injected with special drugs that makes it impossible for them to have the milk of human kindness in them. But with time, I saw and met many soft-hearted soldiers. I used to tease them about what we were told as kids. I must say I became one of their fans and good friends. I visited our soldiers in Sierra Leone and Liberia and gave them my humble support and they were very appreciative of my modest contribution and inspiration.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The reason for my preamble must be obvious to you all. I was seriously angry after seeing a video purportedly showing how our soldiers were brutalising fellow Nigerians and subjecting them to the worst indignities known to mankind. I’ve been praying that the videos were shot in outer space and not anywhere near Nigeria. But if what I saw very vividly actually took place on our planet and in this our dear beloved nation, then we’ve truly missed the road. I did not see any sign of weapons with these hapless victims of oppression and repression.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">At the very worst, even if as the military authorities claimed, that the soldiers were pelted with pebbles and stones, the treatment meted out to the personalities in the video is undeserved by any human being. How was the response from the military commensurate to that of the supposed hoodlums? Was it not an act of provocation in itself for soldiers to be engaging in drills in an area already soaked with tension?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Let me stretch the argument a bit further. Whose idea was it to draft the soldiers onto the streets to intimidate Nigerians in areas where there was no war? How can anyone send soldiers to threaten a people who already feel marginalised and are saying so very resoundingly? What is wrong with empowering members of the Nigeria Police Force and especially the anti-riot police squad to tackle cases of hooliganism and even terrorism. Soldiers are meant to come out in open battle only in extreme cases where there is total chaos and mayhem. President Muhammadu Buhari has wittingly or inadvertently walked into the trap cleverly set for him by the Biafra secessionists. Kanu and company have read the President well knowing his proclivity for no-nonsense and high-handedness.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">If truth must be told, this is the height of intolerance on the part of the Nigerian State. I have not seen any Lawyer who believes in the legality of what our soldiers have done. Kanu may be reckless and irresponsible by promoting internecine wars and heating up our country unnecessarily but no one can deny him the right of expressing himself and agitating for his beliefs. What could have been done to him was very simple; send the police after him and get him rearrested for flouting his bail conditions. Some of his hard core loyalists and acolytes could be easily identified and kept out of circulation. For the past few months, Kanu has been raking and ranting but he has not fired a bullet.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">As a matter of fact, this government has unfortunately resurrected a man who was already on his way to Golgotha and at a time his bravado was becoming increasingly irritating to many of those who took him seriously initially. The staccato fashion of his argument was becoming boring and predictable. I really don’t know who misadvised our leaders into thinking they can fight all wars and win all. Believe me please, I know Nigeria a bit, it is a dangerous gamble.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">I’m aware that our President is a retired Major General, a man well known for his taciturnity, who packs his punches and loves to take on known and imaginary enemies. But we supported him because we believed Baba had transfigured into a born again democrat. The Buhari we supported was not the man who ruled with draconian Decrees from 1983-85 and was forced out of power and his detractors rejoiced openly and widely. The same Nigerians who praised you for beating your child would soon turn around to castigate you and ask why you’re so wicked. That is the reality of Nigeria. This particular case is even more precarious. Some Northerners had issued threats to the Igbos to quit their territory or face monumental reprisals.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> A few of the respected people in the North cautioned them but they were rebuffed with insults in a most vicious manner. No security arm ever tried to even invite them for any chat not to talk of arrests. The then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, did so well by engaging different sections of Nigeria in peaceful dialogue and we were happy that the ticking bomb was carefully detonated. Just imagine what would have happened if he invaded parts of the North or East with soldiers blazing with guns and bayonets. He would have been accused of all sorts, including ethnic cleansing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Our President should be told in very clear terms that the world has changed drastically in the last three decades. No leader can order his troops out in the streets to kill and destroy wantonly. We should not over-stretch our luck. Nigeria cannot afford a second civil war. Our economy is already in shambles. We should prosecute how to return to economic recovery urgently and resist the temptation of wasting our scarce resources on persecuting our fellow citizens. The videos in circulation tend to portray us as barbarians who belong in the prehistoric age. We’ve suffered enough negativity and should not invite the wrath of the world upon ourselves.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Believe it or not, Nigeria may find itself in the bad book of War Crimes Tribunal. It is not impossible, no matter how long it takes. Mass graves have been reported in some parts of Nigeria with concrete proofs. Nigerians have been detained indefinitely in near solitary confinements without trial. These are not the best examples to lay for our future. Many of those who should speak up against tyranny are too squeamish for obvious reasons. But it should not be so.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">I’m not a supporter of Biafra. I don’t have to be. I love and prefer a bigger, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. But there are reasons for many Nigerians to detest Nigeria, today. They feel they have been horribly marginalised and treated like second class citizens in their own country. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Their perception is that they believe all or most of the following things. Their children no longer attend the good schools for which the Igbos have become well known. The goods, some of which they even make themselves in Aba, have become only available for the rich. Infrastructure is sorely lacking for the most part.  Where they exist, they are decaying and nobody is really attending to them. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">There are no new jobs and the few old jobs are being lost in droves. The state of healthcare is almost hopeless. Federal character has become a total charade. We can go on, ad infinitum, reeling out the litany of woes that our brothers and sisters in the South East believe is responsible for the unusually strident agitation that we are now witnessing. To be fair and charitable they do have cause to be aggrieved in many respects.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Our government should address these issues instead of attacking those who disagree with them. One of the surest ways to do this is by education, information and public enlightenment to demonstrate that the position is not as bad as they feel. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The social media is awash with facts and figures for and against the depth and seriousness of the so-called marginalisation of the South East. The next step would be to identify those issues which are of critical concern, proffer solutions to resolve them and then act on these solutions. The third and equally important duty of the government is to ensure an equitable distribution of resources and positions.  </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Indeed, this is the major reason for the clamour for restructuring. Whilst we still operate in a system where government provides practically everything, it is only just that people must have a sense of belonging and participation.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">However, the best form of restructuring that Nigeria needs now is not merely to decentralise power but to cede power completely to the private sector whilst government contributes its quota by providing the enabling environment for the much needed industrialisation and technological advancement that will take us out of our present doldrums.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In the name of God, the omnipotent and merciful, everyone should beg our Federal Government to end this self-immolating war of attrition. We have nothing to gain. In fact, we have more to lose.</div>
