He assured that all votes cast would be properly recorded, transmitted and collated at the end of the day.<br /> <br /> On the general assessment of the election, Osaze-Uzzi said the voting process was generally peaceful and was in accordance with plan, except for the late commencement of poll in some few units. He added that the commission was, however, investigating the cause of such late commencement of voting in affected polling units.<br /> <br /> “Generally the election has been peaceful and we are very happy. The turnout look to me better than the last two previous governorship elections.” On the allegation that there was no election at Okpoko in Ogbaru and Umudim in Nnewi North council areas, Osaze-Uzzi said the matter was also being investigated by the commission with a view to find appropriate solution to the problem.<br /> <br /> “It is being investigated and I think it has to do with late arrival or shortage of materials. “The matter was resolved but a bit late.<br /> <br /> The community was saying we should reschedule the election in the affected unit to tomorrow, but we are looking at the best option,” he added. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Oseloka Obaze, had complained that poll did not take place in Okpoko in Ogbaru and Umudim in Nnewi North council areas of the state.(NAN)

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate Governor Willie Obiano scored 11 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Tony Nwoye scored five votes.<br /> <br /> Addressing newsmen after voting, Obaze said: “I ran hard for this campaign and I ran to win. I’m confident that if our people have voted and there is no tampering with the process and there are no illegalities in the processing of the balloting and coalition, then we should win this election fairly at the end of the day.<br /> <br /> “We’re confident that we’ll win this election, no question about that. One is the people voting based on their conscience, the other is for and INEC and its agents to follow the process and render the results accordingly.”<br /> <br /> Shouts of “OHO!!!” “OHO!!!”, the initials of his name, rented the air as his supporters welcomed him to the unit. Some called Obaze “our governor” as, accompanied by wife, he smiled and waved to the villagers, observers and journalists.<br /> <br /> Before his arrival, there were doubts as to whether he would not vote as information filtered in that other candidates had voted earlier. Journalists had been waiting for his arrival since 10am.<br /> <br /> On why he voted late, he said: “I chose to wait till towards the end rather voting early. I’ve been busy monitoring the situation in the state. Evidently there seems to be a low voter turnout. I don’t know the cause of the apathy.<br /> <br /> “You can explain low voter turnout in the city because people might have travelled to their villages to vote. But we don’t know why the turnout has been that low.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> “There seems to be a mixed process. I heard that in Okpoko and Umudim in Nnewi there were no voting going on. By and large the feedback I get is that everything has been peaceful which is very gratifying.”<br /> <br /> Obaze said he heard about allegations of vote buying multiple thumb printing, adding: “It is the responsibility of INEC to monitor that. But I can tell you we are not involved in that in any way.<br /> <br /> “We campaigned vigorously; we’re not interested in buying votes. People voted for us because they believe in our mission. Those who bought votes did so because they lacked confidence that people would vote for them.<br /> <br /> “I’ve heard allegations that in Okacha in Aniocha and Amaobia there were people arrested for multiple thumb printing, but these are mere allegations. It’s meant for law enforcement agencies to investigate them.”<br /> <br /> He said he would come to a conclusion about the election’s credibility when he gets reports of both local and international observers and party agents.<br /> <br /> “A combination of factors will lead us to conclude that the election is credible. Those will depend on what we hear from international observers and from our field reports. My situation room will brief me before we make that assessment.<br /> <br /> “I have always said federal agencies have a responsibility to meet their statutory obligation. Same with INEC. I don’t want to question anybody.. It is for the people to say if they have met that obligation and if they passed the litmus test of their responsibility and as it relates to law and order.”<br /> <br /> Asked if he was concerned about federal might, he said: “I know the ruling party will be inclined to see that their candidate wins, but I cannot derogate the Federal Government to say they’ve been unfair or biased because I don’t have the basis for that yet.<br /> <br /> “It’s when we get in the field report and we see that something untoward happened that we would speak to that effect,” he said.

We slept in open halls and were exposed to mosquitoes.<br /> <br /> “The treatment they have given us so far is like that given to a leper. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh21dZGcUpCHaqMXm-NMMfGdnXMS7wNFC1fjvsXjtAd3vyf1oMrwwl00mbIFT1omS8PpOd3sNGJg3OndZIq-myhrlHtvDncG4pnaIDn8bnavwvRGtPailtgmXQsdkv8jRqaB-luhyaOrJ4x/s1600/vote+ballot1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="340" data-original-width="450" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh21dZGcUpCHaqMXm-NMMfGdnXMS7wNFC1fjvsXjtAd3vyf1oMrwwl00mbIFT1omS8PpOd3sNGJg3OndZIq-myhrlHtvDncG4pnaIDn8bnavwvRGtPailtgmXQsdkv8jRqaB-luhyaOrJ4x/s320/vote+ballot1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> The people of Anambra voted amid tight security in the Saturday governorship election.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The News Agency of Nigeria reports that no fewer than 36 political parties and candidates are participating in the election being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.<br /> <br /> NAN correspondents who visited the 4,608 polling units in the 21 council areas report that heavily armed security operatives were seen in all the units and council areas visited.<br /> <br /> NAN reports that the security operatives refused people not participating in the election access on Onitsha-Enugu expressway as well as Oye-Agu/Abagana junction linking communities on the Onitsha road.<br /> <br /> At popular Borrowmew Roundabout in Onitsha, there was heavy presence of army, police and NSCDC operatives who refused every unaccredited vehicle passage.<br /> <br /> NAN reports that a combined team of security personnel comprising army, Police, NSCDC, Immigration and others blocked the River Niger Head Bridge, Onitsha, in line with no entry directive announced before the election.<br /> <br /> One of the military personnel told NAN under anonymity that only accredited vehicles were allowed to pass through the road block.<br /> <br /> In Ifte-Awka, Okpuno, Amawbia, Nibo and Umudioka, all in Awka South Local Government, security personnel were seen at all the major junctions and polling units.<br /> <br /> At Aroma Junction in Awka, INEC presiding officer, Mr. Joshua Ejimbi, told NAN that he was happy with the level of security at the centre.<br /> <br /> A local observer from the Centre for Citizens with Disability, Mr. David Anyamele, also corroborated the position of Ejimbi on security and applauded various security organisations for massive deployment of their personnel for the election.<br /> <br /> A voter, Mr. Nduka Ilechukwu, said the presence of security personnel at his St. Martin Ihiala polling unit encouraged many people to take part in the exercise.<br /> <br /> Ilechukwu said there was apprehension before the election that it might be disrupted; but the number of police and other security men present in all the polling units had restored the confidence of the masses.<br /> <br /> In Ekwulobia, Nene, Nri, Ozubulu, Aguleria, Umuleri, and Nnewi areas, heavily armed security personnel were seen in all the polling units visited; while major junctions were also manned at the entry and exist points.<br /> <br /> In Aguata, Orumba North and South areas, security personnel were seen searching bags of voters, especially females, who came to polling units with handbags.<br /> <br /> In Oyi and Njikoka council areas, the security was water-tight and Rep. Gozie Nwamkpa described the security as “perfect.”<br /> <br /> NAN reports that the police deployed 26,ooo personnel, while the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Commission deployed 14,000 and 2,000 operatives respectively.<br /> <br /> Some 37 parties are fielding candidates in Anambra to try to wrest power from Governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, who is seeking a second term. Free at last. We are free at last.”<br /> <br /> NAN reports that on Friday, President Ian Khama of Botswana urged Mugabe to end his attempts to remain in office after the military seized power, as he has no regional diplomatic support to stay in power.<br /> <br /> The military intervention, which political sources say could pave the way to a national unity government after 37 years of Mugabe rule, also presented “an opportunity to put Zimbabwe on a path to peace and prosperity”, Khama told Reuters.<br /> <br /> “I don’t think anyone should be President for that amount of time. We are Presidents, we are not monarchs. It’s just common sense,” Khama said.<br /> <br /> Earlier, Mugabe arrived at a university graduation ceremony in the capital on Friday, his first public appearance since a military seizure of power that political sources say is aimed at ending his 37 years in office.<br /> <br /> Mugabe, who is 93, opened a graduation ceremony at Zimbabwe Open University in Harare.<br /> <br /> He wore blue and yellow academic robes and a mortar board hat and appeared to fall asleep in his chair as his eyes closed and his head lolled.<br /> <br /> Mugabe led the country’s liberation struggle and has dominated its politics since independence in 1980.<br /> <br /> He said he is still in charge but a senior member of the ZANU-PF ruling party said it wanted him gone.<br /> <br /> “If he becomes stubborn, we will arrange for him to be fired on Sunday,” the source said. “When that is done, it’s impeachment on Tuesday.”<br /> <br /> In contrast, the military said in a statement on national television it was “engaging” with Mugabe. Constantino Chiwenga, who seized power this week.<br /> <br /> The images stunned Zimbabweans who thought it meant Mugabe was managing to hold out against Chiwenga’s coup, with some political sources saying he was trying to delay his departure until elections scheduled for next year.<br /> <br /> The ZANU-PF source said that was not the case. They urged the people to come en masse on Saturday (today) and protest against the veteran leader.<br /> <br /> According to News24, the leader of the war veterans, Chris Mutsvangwa, said on Friday that the president would not be allowed to remain in power.<br /> <br /> He said, “Between now and tomorrow, we are giving a very stark warning to Mugabe, his wife and anyone who wants to be associated with him that the game is up – finished.<br /> <br /> “We are appealing to all Zimbabweans to come tomorrow (Saturday) for the biggest, largest turnout by the Zimbabwean population so we finish the job the army has started.”<br /> <br /> The protest, which was already gathering momentum as of Friday evening, was billed to start from the Freedom Square, Harare by 10 am.<br /> <br /> Expressing support for the protest, the main opposition party in the country, the Movement for Democratic Change, also said the military takeover “resonated with the national public sentiments and hence irreversible in effect and fact.”<br /> <br /> A former minister and liberation war veteran, Dumiso Dabengwa, said he congratulated the Zimbabwean military on “the initiative they took to block the rise” of Grace (Mugabe).<br /> <br /> Similarly, Botswana President, Ian Khama, said on Friday that Mugabe should end his attempts to remain in office after the military takeover, as he has no regional diplomatic support to stay in power.<br /> <br /> “The military intervention presents an opportunity to put Zimbabwe on a path to peace and prosperity,” Khama told Reuters.<br /> <br /> “I don’t think anyone should be President for that length of time. Influential Nigerians Not Paying For Power – Fashola

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi68Z2Nha6utO19dIj0-4cTSMhhWCxV_LbHrgqTmtAlxAgPj2VhtLYb7ACS2mNS_wV4NX9Stc4gp_GiX9cySaJhghCE0beJ6ECflmxwk4bvDgdZHKGGnN2LCkXlqSPtCOBgH5my6nK904aT/s1600/Fashola+%25281%2529+works.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="485" data-original-width="485" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi68Z2Nha6utO19dIj0-4cTSMhhWCxV_LbHrgqTmtAlxAgPj2VhtLYb7ACS2mNS_wV4NX9Stc4gp_GiX9cySaJhghCE0beJ6ECflmxwk4bvDgdZHKGGnN2LCkXlqSPtCOBgH5my6nK904aT/s320/Fashola+%25281%2529+works.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola on Friday revealed that some influential people in the country were not paying for power, adding that plans were on to prosecute them and drag them into the energy payment net.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> He said that this would begin when the ministry concluded its ongoing audit to tackle issue of metering.<br /> <br /> Fashola made this known at an Interactive Session with members of 21 Civil Society Organisations and the media on Friday in Lagos.<br /> <br /> Some of the civil society groups included Centre for Democracy and Social Economic Rights, Alliance for Good Governance, Grassroot Democratic Initiative and Centre for Social Economic and Human Rights.<br /> <br /> Fashola, however, said that government would fix the problems facing the power sector before applying sanction on energy thieves.<br /> <br /> Fashola explained that the ministry in dealing with problems of the privatisation of the power sector had sought the help of the World Bank whose Private Sector arm does not lend money to government.<br /> <br /> The arms lends and provides guarantee to private companies only.<br /> <br /> He said that the Distribution Companies and Generation Companies proposal did not fit into the World Bank project because they were home grown solutions to problem of power.<br /> <br /> He said that the role of private sector in the power project was to help government carry out its functions better to boost the economy.<br /> <br /> “When you look at the contributions of government to the GDP in Nigeria it’s nine, 10 per cent, the contribution of private sector is 90 per cent,” he said.<br /> <br /> The minister said that several developed countries did not subsidise utilities but privatised sectors for efficiency.<br /> <br /> He explained that contrary to public perception, tariff could sometime be reviewed downward depending on the market forces.<br /> <br /> He explained legal angles to some Civil Society Groups who had earlier taken government to court on issues of tariff.<br /> <br /> “You cannot sue somebody who has no power. The regulator is Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and it is an agency that should act independently.<br /> <br /> “What is the business of the Minister of Communication with your cell phone,” he asked.<br /> <br /> He encouraged members of the public to blow the whistle on energy thieves, noting that this would help the Discos in the discharge of their function.<br /> <br /> “NERC is working on metering regulation, the power sector has been privatised, but it is a largely regulated sector by NERC.<br /> <br /> “And so, for you to do anything, you must follow regulations,” he said.<br /> <br /> The Minister said that NERC was currently working on mini grids, deregulation of eligible customers and were waiting for the regulation of metering.<br /> <br /> “Everybody assumes that Discos would supply meters, Discos do not have the capital to do so and their work is not really meter supply, their work is power supply.<br /> <br /> “They need the meter just to measure and to bill us.<br /> <br /> “So the regulation that are coming now would open metering to private sector people who would either come and serve as private meter service providers or meter franchise holders,” he said.<br /> <br /> He said that the market was evolving for people and investors to choose to either be franchise holders or service providers for community metering.<br /> <br /> Fashola said that there were several logistic problems associated with ongoing audit of houses to capture them in the right metering category.<br /> <br /> He added that when the privatisation of the sector was earlier done there were only about 6.5 million houses on the data base which showed that some people consumed electricity without payment.
