Pop star, R.Kelly has been denied bail by a Magistrate over the racketeering and transporting women and girls for sex charges held against him. 
 
Kelly pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn federal court Friday, August 2, 2019, to charges of racketeering and transporting women and girls for sex and was held without bail. 
 
According to PageSix a glum-looking Kelly entered the plea through his lawyer Douglas Antonas his two girlfriends and alleged sex slaves Joycelyn Savage and Azriel Clary looked on from the gallery. 
 
The magistrate Judge Steven Tiscione denied the star bail, finding that he’d be unable to comply with conditions of his release.

“The defendant is accused of a multitude of crimes. They’re not minor charges,” said the judge. “I’m extremely troubled by the issues of potential obstruction in prior cases.” R.Kelly was arrested a few weeks ago by the police over federal sex crime charges” 
 
It was gathered that the music star was arrested on Thursday, July 11, 2019, in Chicago on charges contained in a 13-count indictment returned in the Northern District of Illinois. 
 
Joseph Fitzpatrick, spokesperson for The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District, says the indictment includes charges of child porn and obstruction of justice, TMZ reports. This is coming barely a few months after he was slammed with 11 count charges in Illinois for abuse and sexual assault.

The Federal Government has moved the partial closure of portions of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to September 2, 2019, ThePunch reports. 
 
The partial closure was initially expected to commence on Saturday, August 3 to enable the construction company, Julius Berger, to work on a stretch of 1.4km between Berger and Kara Market. 
 
The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr Adedamola Kuti, stated on Friday that the decision was to enable for the effective traffic management plan and to show sensitivity to Nigerians.

The Police in Enugu State have arrested a 200 level student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Asogwa Nnamdi, for the murder of his fellow 400 level student, Chukwudi Mba. 
 
Nnamdi reportedly stabbed Mba to death during an argument over payment of an electricity bill given to their lodge. 
 
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Friday that the command had arrested the suspect and commenced investigation into the incident. 
 
He, however, said the police had yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder which happened on Wednesday.

He said, “The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has commenced a full-scale investigation into the alleged murder of a 400 level student of Public Administration of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, by a co-student in 200 level. 
 
“On that day, the suspect, later identified as one Asogwa Nnamdi, alias Tiny of about 23 years old, a 200 level student of UNN, stabbed one Chukwudi Mba to death with a knife at their lodge, Alfred’s Lodge, Nsukka, over a yet-to-be established issue. 
 
“The suspect stabbed the deceased Mba in the back. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed dead. The suspect has been arrested and is already helping the police investigation.” 
 
Amaraizu stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Balarabe, had called for thorough investigation into the cause of the incident, adding that the body of the deceased had been deposited in a mortuary.

FC Barcelona and Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been banned from international football for three months by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) following his claim the Copa America was corrupt.

He has also been fined about N18 million (about 50,000 dollars or 41,121 pounds).

“We don’t have to be part of this corruption,” Messi had said. “They have showed us a lack of respect throughout this tournament. 
 
“Sadly, the corruption, the referees, they don’t allow people to enjoy football, they ruined it a bit.”

Non-teaching staff of Nigerian Universities on the auspices of the Joint Action Committee is set to resume it’s suspended nationwide protest over the non-payment of their earned allowances and the issue of sacked workers of university staff schools. 
 
The Non-teaching staff who said they will resume the nationwide protest on Tuesday, August 6 have also given the government a 14-day ultimatum to address the issue, saying failure to do that will leave them no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike. 
 
Already, the Joint Action Committee, JAC, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Educational Institutions, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have directed all the branches to resume the nationwide protest in all the universities from Tuesday, August 6, 2019. 
 
In a circular to all the branches after their meeting in Abuja, the JAC said that at the expiration of the 14-days ultimatum, if the federal government failed to address all their grievances, they would be left with no other option than withdrawing their services and shutting down the universities.

In the circular titled “Notice of Industrial Action”, which was signed by the Chairman of JAC and President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke and the General Secretary of NASU, Comrade Peters Adeyemi, the two unions lamented the non-challant attitude of the Federal Government towards addressing their grievances and obeying court judgment. 
 
The circular read, “This is to inform you that the Joint Action Committee, JAC of NASU and SSANU met on Thursday 1st August, 2019, to consider the issues which led to the Nationwide protest in our various branches, viz, Payment of Earned Allowances, University Staff Schools matter, Renegotiation of 2009 FGN/Unions Agreement among others. 
 
“After extensive deliberations, JAC further observed that no date has been rescheduled by the President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Ahmed Lawan for the meeting with the leadership of JAC national. 
 
“The meeting earlier scheduled by the Federal Ministry of Education with the leadership of JAC national has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 7, 2019 with no reason(s) stated. 
 
“From the foregoing, JAC national has resolved that a 14-Day ultimatum of Industrial action be given to the Federal Government of Nigeria to address the pending issues with effect from Monday,5th August, 2019. During the period of the ultimatum, all branches are hereby directed to carry out peaceful protest on Tuesday, 6th August, 2019 and Thursday, 15th August,2019 respectively. 
 
“At the expiration of the 14-days ultimatum, Sunday 18th August 2019, without any positive response from the Federal Government of Nigeria, members shall proceed on a 5-day warning strike in all branches from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd August, 2019, inclusive. 
 
“You are therefore directed to properly mobilize our members for this action. All defaulting branches shall be sanctioned accordingly.”

President, Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman has reacted to the kidnap of five pastors of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, by gunmen on Friday. 
 
The five pastors are: Chidozie Eluwa, Chiemela Iroha, Okoro Ohowukwe, Ndubuisi Owuabueze, and Ibeleji Chidinma (female). 
 
They were on their way from Abia State to Lagos to attend the RCCG’s ministers conference when they were abducted in Ijebu-Ode. 
 
Reacting to the development, Suleman said he just came into the country to hear of strange happening, especially the kidnap of five RCCG pastors.

The management of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has confirmed disappearance of the court’s Finance and Accounts Director, Anthony Okwecheme. 
 
Recall that we had reported on Friday how Okwecheme went missing after his official car, in which he was being driven to the airport, ran into a flooded road and was submerged. 
 
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. close to a construction site along Galadimawa roundabout in Abuja. 
 
While he was submerged in the flood, his driver however escaped and has since been receiving treatments in a hospital.

The court’s spokesperson, Mrs. Tabitha Kangiwa confirmed the incident while giving assurances that effort was on to locate the senior court official.

25,000 Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi for 2019 Hajj

About 25,000 Nigerian pilgrims on Friday afternoon arrived in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for the 2019 Hajj. 
 
The Representative of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria in Saudi Arabia, Dr Aliyu Tanko, confirmed this in Makkah. 
 
The Hajj rites will reach its peak on August 10 when pilgrims are expected to climb Mount Arafah.

Fielding questions from journalists on Friday, Tanko said more pilgrims were on transit from Jeddah and Madinah to Makkah to take part in the rites. 
 
He said about 150 buildings (hotels) had been secured by the states to house the pilgrims in Makkah. 
 
He said NAHCON only supervised the process involved in getting the hotels at reasonable prices unlike in Madinah where they were fully responsible for the accommodation of all pilgrims. 
 
Tanko urged the pilgrims to consider what they ate to avoid challenges, noting that anyone who missed Arafah had not performed Hajj (pilgrimage). 
 
He also told the pilgrims to acquire knowledge about pilgrimage, adding that scholars were brought to guide them in order to achieve acceptable Hajj. 
 
The NAHCON chief said, “Pilgrims should know what to do at every point. They should know the dos and don’ts of Hajj.” 
 
He also advised them to respect the laws of the land and the rules guiding Hajj, as well as avoid dealing in prohibited items in Saudi Arabia. 
 
To cater for the health of the pilgrims, Tanko added that NAHCON had established two major clinics and three sub-clinics in areas where the country had a huge concentration of the guests of Allah in Makkah to prevent them from trekking before getting care.

The acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has appealed to the British Government to assist Nigeria with the repatriation of stolen money stashed in banks in the United Kingdom. 
 
Magu made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the UK’s Serious and Organised Crime Joint Analysis for West Africa at the EFCC’s headquarters, Abuja. 
 
The acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, in a statement on Friday, said Magu expressed worries that the wealth of the country had for a very long time remained trapped in foreign countries, thereby hindering infrastructural development of the country.

Nigeria, he said, would have been better if the stolen money had been returned. 
 
The EFCC boss said, “Our worry is that our money has been held for a very long time in foreign countries and if our money is returned, there will be improved infrastructural development in many sectors of the economy. If all the repatriated funds are pumped into the country, it will significantly enhance our abilities and capabilities.” 
 
The leader of the SOCJA delegation from National Crime Agency, UK, Paddy Kerr, disclosed that the visit followed the directive from the British Government that each team under SOCJA should go to every region in the world and get the picture of their peculiar organised crimes. 
 
“We need to understand from the EFCC’s perspective, what is driving crimes and corruption in Nigeria. What are the key things EFCC is doing that British can assist?” Kerr asked.

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has warned Abuja could be turned into “a theatre of a violent international conflict” between two major Islamic sects – Sunnis and Shi’ites – following the proscription of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

Reacting to the proscription of the IMN, popularly known as Shi’ites, by the Federal Government recently, MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, accused the Muhammadu Buhari government of bias. 
 
He wondered why the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria had not been tagged a terrorist group by the FG. 
 
He condemned the continued detention of the leader of the IMN, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, calling for his release. 
 
Madu said the international backers of the IMN, especially Iran, would not be happy with the proscription of the group in the country. 
 
He said, “Like IPOB, the IMN is not a terrorist organisation. 
 
“Shi’ites are members of an Islamic sect, an internationally recognised religious movement. They are not only in Nigeria. You find them all over the world. 
 
“So, how is it that they are now a terrorist organisation in Nigeria? They are not terrorists, just like IPOB are not terrorists. 
“But like IPOB, they are another group President Buhari hates and he is dealing with them severely, just as he dealt with IPOB. 
 
“Buhari is a Sunni (Muslim) and Sunnis always have problems with Shi’ites, so he (Buhari) is punishing and persecuting Shi’ites here in Nigeria. 
 
“Buhari should know that the decisions being taken by his government can turn Nigeria, particularly Abuja, into a theatre of violent international conflict between Sunnis and Shi’ites, and when this happens it will affect everybody; the blood of both dogs and baboons will flow on the streets of Abuja.

 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 presidential election, Mr. Omowole Sowore, has been arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Services. 
 
His online publishing outfit, Sahara Reporters, broke the news. 
 
According to the online medium, DSS operatives arrested Sowore in the early hours of Saturday at about 1.25 a.m.in his apartment.

 Several Nigerians are calling for the release of human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, following his arrest by operatives of the Department of State Services. 
 
Using #Freesowore hashtag on Twitter, many Nigerians slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for trying to use the DSS to silence Sowore. 
 
Sowore is spearheading a series of nationwide demonstrations tagged '#RevolutionNow Days of Rage' to protest bad governance in Nigeria.

The DSS invaded Sowore’s apartment in the early hours of Saturday with four trucks, seizing his phones and other electronic gadgets. 
 
His whereabouts is currently unknown as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigerian Army on Friday released the photographs of the graves of Lance Corporal Adah Tamuno named in a Wall Street Journal report and those of other soldiers buried in Maimalari Military Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, in November 2018. 
 
The army insisted that it did not bury any soldiers without the knowledge of their families, adding that Adah and others were buried in the presence of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai. 
 
The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, and Operation Lafiya Dole, Col Ado Isa, who released 26 photographs, said in a statement that the last burial done by the army was on July 18, after “Col E.E. Elemele and five soldiers were killed along Jakana-Benisheik road” in Borno in a Boko Haram ambush a day before.

The Wall Street Journal claimed in its report on Wednesday the corpses of soldiers were buried in unmarked graves at night. 
 
The report quoting soldiers and military officers as its sources claimed the secret graveyard and an official cemetery at Maimalari both “hold the bodies of at least 1,000 soldiers killed since the terror groups began an offensive last summer.” 
 
The report said Mercy, wife of Adah Tamuno, was told that her husband was killed by Boko Haram, and when she demanded to see where he was buried, she was taken to a spot in the cemetery marked with a plastic bottle with her husband’s name written on it. 
 
However, the army released the photographs of the graves of Adah and eight others killed in the November 2018 Metele attack, saying they were buried with a 21-gun salute in the presence of their families. 
 
Isa said, “The Maimalari Military Cemetery is the only recognised place where burials are held in the theatre. The stretch of land where the cemetery is located and beyond belongs to the army and it was not taken from any person or a group of people as claimed. 
 
“Burial procedures in the army are entrenched in the army administrative policies and procedures. The procedures are triggered by first notifying the headquarters and the next of kin of the deceased personnel for coordination. It is a command responsibility and attended by officers and soldiers of the unit within the theatre. The timing for all burials in the theatre has always been before the flags are lowered in the evening. 
 
“The Maimalari cemetery is partitioned into two to accommodate both Christians and Islam faithful. The graves are also partitioned, and grave pegs placed to mark each grave. All the deceased are also honoured with a 21-gun salute in line with the ethics and traditions of the army.” 
 
He added, “The questions are: where, when, why and for what reason would 1,000 bodies be hidden without anyone seeing them or perceiving the smell. The report that one Mercy Tamuno, who demanded to see where her husband was buried, was led to a spot marked with a plastic bottle is unbelievable. Interestingly, 13NA/70/9866, Adah Tamuno, was serving with 119 Task Force Battalion at Metele and died during combat. 
 
“He was officially buried on November 29, 2018, alongside his colleagues. The last burial in the theatre was on July 18 at the Maimalari Military Cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites. The burial was attended by the families of the deceased and other sympathisers.”

 The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called for prayers following the kidnap of five persons suspected to be pastors of the church . 
 
The pastors were travelling from the Eastern part of the country on Thursday to attend a ministers’ conference held at the RCCG Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, preparatory to the church’s Annual Holy Ghost Convention which starts on Monday. 
 
The kidnappers ambushed the vehicle they were travelling in along Ogbere in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area of Ogun State and whisked them away into the bush. 
 
Speaking on the abduction at the conference on Friday, Adeboye called for prayers for the kidnapped victims to regain their freedom.

He asked the National Prayer Coordinator of the church, Pastor Peter Olawale, to lead the congregation in prayers for God to rescue them from the kidnappers’ den. 
 
Olawale, who is also the Special Assistant to the GO on Prayers, thereafter led the worshippers in fervent prayers. 
 
The Head, Media and Public Relations, RCCG, Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi, confirmed the incident to newsmen on the telephone and said all hands were on deck to rescue the victims. 
 
He said, “The whole thing broke out this morning when the General Overseer was speaking to us at the ministers’ conference. 
 
“As far as the church is concerned, we are still trying to get as much information as possible about the incident. We are trying to put all hands on deck to ensure that the victims return home safely.” 
 
Asked if the kidnappers had contacted the church, Olubiyi answered in the negative. 
 
“We don’t know whether they have contacted the families, but our concern is their safe return and we trust that God will do it,” he added. 
 
However, during the evening session of the Ministers’ Conference, pastor Adeboye said investigation revealed that only one of the five people kidnapped is an RCCG pastor, noting that the other four are not RCCG members. 
 
“But we are praying for them that they will all be released,” he added. 
 
The GO said that not long after his statement in the morning, he started getting calls from the United Kingdom about the abduction. 
 
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command says it has launched an aerial surveillance as part of the efforts to rescue the five abducted persons. 
 
The police said operatives were closing in on the kidnappers and assured the public that the victims would soon be rescued. 
 
The police gave the names of the abductees as Chidioze Eluwa, Chiemela Iroha, Okoro Ohowukwe, Ndubuizi Owuabueze and Ibeleji Chidinma. 
 
According to the police, the abductors emerged from the forest and forcefully stopped a commercial vehicle with the number plate KW 230 XA belonging to Abia Line transport company and took the passengers into the forest. 
 
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, was leading the rescue team. 
 
Oyeyemi said, “On August 1, 2019, at about 3.30pm, the Ogun State Police Command received information that a commercial vehicle with registration number KW 230 XA belonging to Abia Line transport company was coming from the Eastern part of the country and heading towards Lagos. 
 
“On getting to the J3 area of Ogbere, some hoodlums numbering about 10 suddenly came out of the forest and forcefully stopped the vehicle.” 
 
The PPRO said the hoodlums’ hideout had already been located but that operatives were being tactical in order not to jeopardise the victims’ lives. 
 
“With the operation going on presently, we are rest assured that the victims will soon regain their freedom and the hoodlums will definitively be brought to book,” he said. 
 
Oyeyemi said the helicopter given to the command by the Force headquarters would assist in the rescue operation. 
 
He said, “We don’t know whether they are pastors or not. What we know is that they were coming from the East. On getting to the J3 area, some hoodlums came out from the bush, stopped their vehicle and abducted five of them – a woman and four men.”

A Professor of History at the Bayero University in Kano, Dahiru Yahya, disclosed that the IMN was not a legal body and as such could not be outlawed. 
 
He disclosed further that Shiite was a religion, adding that the Federal Government lacked the power to proscribe religion.

He said, “The proscription is illegal. We are going to appeal against the proscription order. We would be going to court on Monday. The whole thing will be ready by then and I know that by Monday we would have gone to the court. 
 
“The IMN does not exist as a group. You cannot in any way outlaw religion, you cannot proscribe a religion. The IMN had never been a legal body.” 
 
The professor of history also disagreed that events leading to the proscription of IMN, which culminated in the deaths of several persons, were carried out by members of Shiites, whom he claimed were not violent. 
 
Those who were killed during the protest included the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, FCT Command, Usman Umar, a Channels Television journalist, Precious Owolabi, and several Shiites. 
 
“The violence that they are talking about was from the Federal Government itself, and not from the Shiites’ peaceful protest. The violence was perpetrated by the police and not members of the group. Shiites are never known to be violent in this country. In any case, we are appealing against the proscription,” he added. 
 
Speaking on the possibility of the Iranian government intervening to find a lasting solution to the group’s situation in Nigeria, the university don said, “As a policy, the Iranian government will not interfere in the policies of other countries. Of course, they are aware of what is happening here. They had said those injured should be brought to Iran for treatment.”

The First Bank Of Nigeria has said that it is investigating the trending video of a customer being assaulted at one of its branches in Lagos. 
 
On its verified Twitter handle, the bank issued a statement, where it revealed that it was aware of the existence of the video and was investigating it. 
 
The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to a video posted online of an incident that happened at one of our branches. The bank is currently investigating this unfortunate incident and will take immediate steps to address both the reasons behind the episode and the fallouts.” 
 
The bank reiterated its commitment to its customers. It said, “We assure the public that our customers remain at the core of our business and we are committed to delivering the highest standards in customer experience across all of our touch points.”

In the trending video, an alleged customer of the bank was beaten by some security operatives attached to the Osapa branch in Lekki, Lagos on Wednesday.

An Evboriaria Chief Magistrate Court in Benin, Edo State, on Thursday convicted a 52-year-old herbalist, Jacob Alonge, for raping his daughter, Gift, at their home at Ososo village, Akoko-Edo. 
 
The herbalist was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment without the option of fine. 
 
Earlier, the prosecution told the court that the convict, who turned his daughter to a sex slave for several years, also instructed her never to sleep with any other man. 
 
Aside from raping the 17-year-old girl repeatedly and impregnating her, he procured abortion for her and shaved the hair in her private parts.

Gift had become pregnant a second time when the matter came to public knowledge and he was arrested by the police and arraigned in court. 
 
The pregnant girl, however, died along with four others in an accident along Benin-Auchi highway, while traveling from Ososo to Benin on the way to the court. 
 
Among the dead were Gift’s uncle, two workers of a non-governmental organisation, Brave Heart Initiative, helping Gift with the case, and the cab driver. 
 
But after learning of the auto crash, Jacob who had earlier pleaded guilty to the counts against him and was about to be sentenced, changed his plea on the day his daughter and the others died. 
 
The court on Thursday concluded his trial and sentenced him to five years on the first count of possession of fetish wrap of Gift’s pubic hair; two years for raping and impregnating her and 14 years for repeated sexual assault. 
 
The presiding Chief Magistrate, D. I. Adamaigbo, said the counts should run concurrently.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on organised labour to challenge political leaders to ensure that state resources meet the needs of workers and other Nigerians. 
 
Oshiomhole made the call in Abuja at a reception in honour of the Director-General, International Labour Organisation, Mr Guy Ryder. 
 
Oshiomhole expressed concern over the non-chalant attitude of leaders towards improving the lives of Nigerian workers and said the organised labour must adopt aggressive engagements to change the status quo. 
 
“We have to do things differently about minimum wage,” he said, noting that whereas prices of goods and services had gone up astronomically in the country, workers wages have remained static.

“So if every other cost is changing, and labour cost is constant…, somebody is being squeezed. 
 
“Rising crises, stagnant wages, a very miserable lifestyle, and you have to fight for that. 
 
“And we now see in Nigeria the difference between signing an agreement and the challenge of translating those laws, and even the contradiction of signing laws first before getting consultants to tell us how to implement these laws. 
 
“Just to tell you that from inside, I am much more convinced that unions should not only exist but should have the capacity and ruthlessly deploy that capacity to ensure that the resources of states are dissipated in favour of working people and working families,” the former NLC president said. 
 
While commending the ILO for its focus on Youth Employment and Social Justice, Oshiomhole said the focus should also be on an ageing population and underemployment of young persons. 
 
He said Nigeria ought to do something about its population growth which was at three per cent annually, as against two per cent national economic growth. 
 
“With a population at three per cent, poverty must be endemic, it is not rocket science, so we do need to have conversations on various aspects of society, particularly at what we do differently to get the youth busy.” 
 
He urged young people to collaborate to fight poverty by pushing those in government to create the environment for them to think and change the narratives.

Bayern Munich resumes their power struggle with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday for the German Super Cup with the Bavarians chasing Manchester City star Leroy Sane to reinforce their squad. 
 
The blockbuster Bundesliga curtain-raiser in Dortmund once more pits Germany’s top clubs together after Bayern held off a spirited Dortmund challenge to land a seventh straight league title on the final day of last season. 
 
“This is the first title that is important to us,” said Bayern star Thomas Mueller a fortnight before the new Bundesliga season starts. 
 
“The game has certain explosiveness. We want to show that we are ready — we’ll put us all into it.”

As defender Niklas Suele put it, Bayern “want to give a sign” they remain the team to beat in Germany.

According to reports, Bayern has tabled a bid of around 90 million euros ($85 million) — which would be a club record. 
 
They have even reportedly pushed taking the official team photo back to September in the hope the 23-year-old will have joined by then. 
 
Head coach Niko Kovac initially declared “I assume we’ll get him” last weekend, but Bayern has dramatically dialled back. 
 
Kovac phoned his City counterpart Pep Guardiola to apologise for recruiting Sane aggressively following criticism from Bayern’s senior figures. 
 
“We’re all well-advised to not talk about players still under contract,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic while chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also criticised Kovac’s bold statement. 
 
On Wednesday, Kovac insisted “what I said was true” as he still believes in the deal with the transfer window to close in a month’s time. 
 
Exactly who will line up for Bayern at Dortmund is unclear. 
 
Bayern fielded mainly reserve team players in Wednesday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of their pre-season tournament.

Military authorities secretly buried more than 1,000 soldiers, who were killed in the battle with insurgents, in a bid create the impression that the counter-insurgency had been won, The Wall Street Journal, has reported. 
 
The newspaper reported that military sources said the number of soldiers buried in that manner could be higher than 1,000. 
 
But the Defence Headquarters has dismissed the report, saying it had no graveyards where soldiers were secretly buried. It said that fallen heroes were given full military burial according to global best practices. 
 
However, the paper insisted that on the eve of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno State in November, army commanders secretly moved corpses of soldiers from a morgue to unmarked graves at Maimalari. 
<a name='more' id="more"></a> 
 
Quoting soldiers, diplomats and senior government officials, the newspaper stated that the corpses were covertly transported in a truck from a mortuary in the dead of the night and buried in “trenches dug by infantrymen or local villagers paid a few dollars per shift.” 
 
“Several of my comrades were buried in unmarked graves at night,” said a soldier from the Maimalari barracks, where more than 1,000 soldiers are based. 
 
“They are dying and being deleted from history,” the soldier added. 
 
The newspaper quoted a senior government official as saying that the secret gravesite at Maimalari was not the only one in Nigeria’s troubled North-East. 
 
Nigerian Army still struggling against insurgents 
 
It stated that although Buhari had “repeatedly claimed his army has won, the reality is that Africa’s largest land force—a US counterterrorism ally—is struggling against an insurgency that first flared a decade ago and is now rejuvenated by the Islamic State and the return of fighters from Libya, Syria and Iraq. 
 
“The insurgents now control hundreds of square miles of territory across four countries around the Lake Chad basin, a crossroads of Africa where the US, the UK and French military have bases or provide special-forces training. On Sunday, gunmen attacked a funeral on the outskirts of Maiduguri, killing at least 65 people, according to government officials.” 
 
According to the report, Nigeria’s government last summer stopped reporting the deaths of soldiers in its fight with Boko Haram insurgents and a splinter group that calls itself Islamic State West Africa Province, or ISWAP. 
 
The Wall Street Journal quoting military officials stated, “The sprawling secret graveyard in Maiduguri and an official cemetery at the base, the operational command for the north-eastern front in Borno State, now hold the bodies of at least 1,000 soldiers killed since the terror groups began an offensive last summer.” 
 
The Wall Street Journal reported that a 50-year-old farmer, Sarah James, said the secret cemetery at the Maimalari barracks grew as the military had expanded the site into neighbouring fields. 
 
“The farmland has been fenced off so they can bury the forces,” she said. 
 
James said she and her colleagues gave up land they had farmed for years to make way for the expansion of the base’s cemetery. 
 
The newspaper said Nigeria’s military built a barrier to ward off what had been farmland on the northern edge of the base in Maiduguri. 
 
The report stated, “Units that have suffered casualties and declining morale aren’t in a position to attack, and are instead defending poorly constructed bases in exposed areas against an increasingly well-equipped enemy.” 
 
“There is a systemic misrepresentation of the war that is having severe tactical and operational consequences,” a former soldier, Chidi Nwaonu, was quoted to have said. 
 
He said the bravery of troops was being undermined by poor decisions of senior commanders. “It’s part cock-up, part conspiracy,” he added. 
 
After an attack by the insurgents on the army base in Metele in November, the newspaper quoted a soldier to have said, “See the weapons they bring here. These are not working. No less than 100-plus soldiers died here. Many are missing in action; they are nowhere to be found.” 
 
Military said my brother was fine until I saw him killed in B’Haram video – Journalist 
 
It said that a journalist based in Abuja, Timothy Olanrewaju, said the military told him that his brother, a sergeant, was safely on deployment. 
 
It added that Olanrewaju could not reach his brother, Sgt. Samuel Olanrewaju, for four months, but commanders repeatedly assured him that his brother was well, stationed in a sensitive combat zone. 
 
According to the report, Olanrewaju learned of his brother’s fate when the Islamic State published a video that showed his execution. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he said. 
 
“Why didn’t they tell me the truth?” he asked. 
 
The newspaper stated, “The military’s secrecy about casualties is so widespread it is unclear whether Nigeria’s political leaders are aware of the state of the conflict. We could see the headlamps and the torches of the engineering division digging the graves,” said a soldier. 
 
Although Buhari had said that insurgents had been defeated, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in June said soldiers’ lack of commitment was affecting the war against insurgency. 
 
The Presidency directed newsmen to the Defence Headquarters to address the issue, adding that it was a military matter. 
 
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, stated, “On the issue of (1,000) soldiers, talk to the military. Talk to the Defence Headquarters about this.” 
 
Military buries soldiers with gun salutes, not secret graves – DHQ 
 
In its reaction, the Defence Headquarters said it had no graveyards where soldiers were secretly buried, noting that fallen heroes were honoured with gun salutes, solemn prayers, among others. 
 
The military denied the allegation in a release by the acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Thursday, saying that soldiers who paid the supreme price were given their “last respects in a befitting military funeral ceremony of international standard.” 
 
Nwachukwu noted that the Maimalari cemetery, described in the publication, was not secretbut the military officially-designated cemetery for soldiers in the North-East theatre, with a “cenotaph erected in honour of our fallen heroes.” 
 
Nwachukwu said, “The Defence Headquarters has noted with dismay an article purporting that the Nigerian military maintains secret graveyards in the North-East theatre of operation. The armed forces of Nigeria have a rich and solemn tradition for the interment of our fallen heroes. Therefore, it must be unambiguously clarified that the Armed Forces do not indulge in secret burials, as it is sacrilegious and a profanity to the extant ethos and traditions of the Nigerian military. 
 
“In tandem with the traditions of the Armed Forces, fallen heroes are duly honoured and paid the last respects in befitting military funerals of international standard, featuring funeral parade, grave site oration, solemn prayers for the repose of departed souls by Islamic and Christian clerics, as well as gun salutes, aside from other military funeral rites. 
 
“The cemetery described in the publication, which is situated in Maimalari military cantonment is an officially designated military cemetery for the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the North-East theatre, with a cenotaph erected in honour of our fallen heroes. The official cemetery has played host to several national and international dignitaries, where wreaths were laid in honour of the fallen heroes. It is therefore a far cry from the sacrilegious impression being painted by the Wall Street Journal.” 
 
Atiku calls for commission of inquiry 
 
But the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, called on Buhari to constitute a judicial commission of inquiry headed by a non-partisan and reputable jurist, to unravel the authenticity of the report. 
 
Atiku, in a statement, said if the report was true, he received it with a sense of heartbreak and shock. 
 
According to him, it is heart-breaking for the families and friends of those soldiers who, if the report was true, had lost their loved ones, without being allowed to bury them or even to have any sense of closure as regards their fate. 
 
He said, “I shudder to think that the cover-up of such an event of epic proportions can be true. The men and women of our armed forces are our first, second and last defence against our domestic and foreign enemies and should be treated with love, respect, dignity and appreciation for the invaluable service they render to Nigeria.” 
 
He added. “To ensure that we get to the bottom of this matter, I urge that a Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by a non-partisan and reputable jurist, be inaugurated to investigate the findings of the Wall Street Journal.”

The meeting called by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers in Lagos over the seven-day ultimatum issued the Federal Government by NUPENG ended in a deadlock on Thursday. 
 
NUPENG had asked the Federal Government to compel Chevron Nigeria Limited to honour the agreement it reached with the union on June 20, 2019. 
 
The union said its members would embark on strike if the agreement was not respected within seven days. 
 
After the union threatened industrial action, the NNPC quickly intervened and called for a meeting between the union leaders and other stakeholders in the matter.

NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, told our correspondent on the telephone after the meeting that parties involved would reconvene on Friday (today) because no agreement was reached on Thursday. 
 
Akporeha said, “We have ended today’s (Thursday) meeting but we have not agreed on any resolution. We are reconvening again tomorrow (today). What this means is that the seven-day ultimatum we issued on Wednesday is still subsisting because nothing has changed.” 
 
 A statement on Wednesday by Akporeha and the General Secretary of NUPENG, Afolabi Olawale, on the ultimatum stated, “NUPENG, with deep frustration and worries, would like to alert the general public and all relevant authorities to the blatant violation of agreement reached between Chevron Nigeria Limited and unions in the industry. 
 
“It is public knowledge that unions in the oil and gas industry had a protracted negotiation with Chevron Nigeria Limited over 70 per cent labour manpower reduction which it (Chevron) claimed was required in view of reduction in their operations in the oil and gas Industry. 
 
“After up to one year negotiation, brokered by Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, National Petroleum Investment Management Services and the Ministry of Labour, it was agreed that considering the intervention of all the institutions mentioned above and the various justifications made, only 30 per cent of the labour manpower contract workers will be relieved.” 
 
The union added, “Of the 1,856 contract workers in the company, NUPENG has 1,120; PENGASSAN, 213; and non-unionised, 523.  It was agreed that the 30 per cent reduction shall be spread in equal percentage among the three groups. It was also agreed that the union executives (NUPENG and PENGASSAN) will not be affected by the reduction, that Chevron Nigeria Limited will not in any guise change the labour manpower to service contracts. 
 
“Unfortunately, immediately after the agreement was reached, Chevron started executing the exercise in blatant violation of the agreed terms, ostensibly to either put NUPENG in a bad light as troublesome or for extinction because only NUPENG members have been exited from work, leaving behind the non-unionised workers and PENGASSAN members. 
 
“From our record, over 500 of NUPENG members are being sacked. Having been pushed to the wall, NUPENG, hereby, puts all our members on red alert should Chevron Nigeria Limited and its contractors fail to honour or comply with our demands within the next seven days, we would also not hesitate to take all necessary legal options available to us, including industrial action, to press home our legitimate demands.”

The Presidency has placed a right group, Amnesty International Nigeria, under security watch list. 
 
The organisation is being watched to determine its interest in a nationwide “revolution” protest being planned for August 5 and being promoted through #RevolutionNow. 
 
President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was said to be surprised that the organisation reproduced a message posted on the social media by the organisers of the protest. 
 
He said the decision to put the organisation on watch list was also taken based on its past anti-government posture.

“Of course, the government has been having sleepless nights over consistent reports by Amnesty which have been projecting the government in a bad light. 
 
“But for the organisation to get involved in national politics and retweet such a message is alarming. 
 
“When a Presidency official asked them whether their Twitter handle was hacked, they deleted the tweet. The Presidency is watching Amnesty Nigeria because of this. “

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission on Thursday said it had recovered hospital equipment meant for constituency project on the premises of Mma Obot Foundation, allegedly belonging to Senator Godswill Akpabio. 
 
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Rasheedat Okoduwa, the commission said it also recovered six tractors from a farm belonging to Senator Isa Misau, who represented Bauchi Central Senatorial District. 
 
The anti-graft agency said it recovered the items during its ongoing tracking of constituency projects around the country. 
 
It said the six tractors recovered from Misau were meant to be used by farmers in the six council areas of the Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

The ICPC said, “The CPTG assessment and review of constituency projects across Nigeria by the commission and its partners – Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Bureau of Public Procurement, Budget Office of the Federation, Premium Times, BudgIT and Udeme.ng – is aimed at ensuring satisfactory execution of all constituency projects across the country. 
 
“It has so far led to multiple recoveries of items, hospital equipment, vehicles and funds. It has also forced many contractors, who hitherto had abandoned projects, to return to site to complete them. 
 
“Among the recoveries so far made by the CPTG team are dialysis machine, ECG monitor, oxygen regulator, anaesthetic machines, generators and other hospital equipment meant for a cottage hospital in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, from the premises of Mma Obot Foundation, alleged to belong to Senator Godswill Akpabio.” 
 
The ICPC said the tractors recovered from Misau were part of items meant to be bought from the sum of N430m to help farmers in his senatorial district. 
 
It added, “The tractors formed part of the N430m contract for the supply of pumping machines and other agricultural machinery to farmers in the senatorial district, which was awarded in 2015 by the Federal Government as part of the senators’ constituency projects across the nation. 
 
“The CPTG team for Bauchi discovered that N76.6m was paid for the tractors in December 2015 and supplied in March 2016. They were supposed to have been distributed for the use of farmers in each of the six local government areas in the senatorial district that included Misau, Dambam, Ningi, Warji, Darazo and Ganjuwa. It was found out that the tractors had obviously not been distributed as required in the terms of the contract.”

Homicide detectives from the Rivers State Police Command are on the trail of the boyfriend of the late Precious Maureen Ewuru who was discovered dead in one of the hotel rooms in D/line Hotel, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. 
 
The tragedy occurred on Thursday night. 
 
It is yet to be ascertained what exactly led to her death.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the death to our Correspondent, said that body of a middle aged woman found dead in a hotel room in D/line, Port Harcourt was allegedly strangled to death by her boyfriend. 
 
He said the matter was still being investigated but that preliminary investigation revealed that she was strangled to death by her boyfriend, who after making love with her, fled. 
 
“He killed her and locked the room but unfortunately for him, he left some traces which the police are now working on that could lead to his arrest,” he said. 
 
Omoni said her body had been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and called on parents to look for their children. 
 
‘’Any one whose daughter or sister has not come home in the last two days should contact the police at the State Criminal Investigation Department,SCID to identify the corpse,” he said.

Four players have been banned for life for match-fixing at the AFC Cup, the Asian Football Confederation said Friday. 
 
Kursanbek Sheratov from Kyrgyzstan was found guilty of fixing a match involving his club Dordoi FC in the 2017 AFC Cup, Asia’s second-tier continental competition. 
 
He also supported betting activity related to the game, the AFC added. 
 
Kyrgyz players Vladimir Verevkin and Iliaz Alimov were found guilty of fixing one or more matches involving their side FC Alay.

And Tajikistan’s Abduaziz Mahkamov manipulated AFC Cup matches involving FC Alay in 2017 and 2018.

Meanwhile, Turkmenistan international Muhadov Suleyman was banned for four years for a doping violation at this year’s Asian Cup, the AFC said.

Resident doctors at the Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, have commenced an indefinite strike to protest the shortage of medical personnel in the hospital. 
 
The strike followed their resolution at a congress on July 31. 
 
The doctors complained of  a gross shortage of manpower, resulting in huge workload following what they termed “a rising exodus of doctors” from the psychiatric hospital. 
 
They claimed, in a statement on Thursday, that the hospital’s Chief Medical Director failed to employ more doctors “to reduce the extreme workload on the few doctors that are left to cater to the multitude of patients who throng the hospital on a daily basis.”

They claimed that their plight was compounded by poor condition of service. 
 
They said, “About 40 doctors exited the hospital within the past five years, yet only 15 doctors have been employed within this same period. 
 
“This has created a severe manpower crisis that has affected service delivery to patients. The hapless doctors are consequently overworked, succumbing to stress-related illnesses.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has again warned dealers of mobile phones and other Information and Communication Technology (ICT) devices, and telecoms consumers against compromising with the standards set by the Commission with regards to type-approval processes. 
 
The Ibadan Zonal Controller of NCC, Yomi Arowosafe, gave the charge during a sensitisation workshop on “Effect of non-type approved handsets on QoS and E-waste” held in Ogun State recently. 
 
Arowosafe told phone dealers, under the aegis of the GSM Repairs and Maintenance Association (GREMA) that type approval is the process by which the Commission certifies that a device meets a minimum set of regulatory, technical and safety requirements before its entry into the market for sale. 
 
He stressed that e-waste gets compounded and becomes threat when substandard devices with limited durability are sold by phone dealers and patronised by telecom consumers, leading to incriminate disposal of such used electronic devices within the environment.

According to the Zonal Controller, the sensitisation workshop was in line with the Commission’s regulatory mandate of educating stakeholders, improving QoS, ensuring sales and patronage of only type-approved handsets and creating a good healthy environment devoid of e-waste. 
 
He explained that the Commission uses international-best-practice standards to type approve telecom devices in order to ensure seamless interoperability across mobile networks and prevent QoS degradation as a result of substandard devices getting connected to the networks. 
 
He enjoined the phone dealers and telecom consumers to check the list of type-approved devices on the Commission’s website before taking their purchase decision, stressing that because non-type approved ICT equipment negatively impacts QoS, revenue accruable to Federal Government and breeds e-waste with potential health risk, “it is a punishable offence for anyone to go against the approved standards.” 
 
Lawal Adebayo, GREMA Chairman, while speaking on behalf of the phone dealers and repairers, applauded the NCC for organising the workshop for the association members, promising that GREMA members across the state would ensure strict adherence to set standards by the Commission.

The National Assembly on Wednesday pledged its continued support to the Nigerian military in tackling the current security threats across the country. 
 
The President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, made the pledge at the National Defence College (NDC) Course 27 Graduation Dinner and Award Night in Abuja. 
 
Lawan, who was represented by Sen. Michael Nnachi, said that the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North East and other security challenges in other parts of the country required the support of all stakeholders. 
 
According to him, as representatives of the people, we are very much in the frontline of efforts to improve security and development.

“We are indeed, in a good position to enable national discussions to forge alliances between Government, civil society and development partners. 
 
“As such, under my leadership, the National Assembly will decidedly place emphasis on quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the legislative processes to improve security and development. 
 
“You will agree with me that the business of ensuring security for this dear nation of ours cannot be left to the security agencies alone because it is a collective effort. 
 
“In this regard, let me assure you that the 9th Assembly intends to work closely with the Executive, the Ministry of Defence and the leadership of the Services to ensure that members of the Armed Forces are well equipped, properly motivated and well trained,’’ he said. 
 
Lawan also pledged to encourage communication between the NDC and the Senate and House Committees on Defence to initiate mechanisms for enhanced security sector governance and reform in Nigeria. 
 
He says: “I also agree that this interface has become imperative, given the growing need to instill best practices in our security sector and the very important role both institutions play in this regard,’’ he said. 
 
The senate president urged the graduating officers to justify the training they had acquired, saying they were better equipped for higher responsibilities. 
 
“The Course you have just finished has prepared you for strategic leadership and higher level command, particularly at a time, when our nation is faced with a plethora of security challenges. 
 
“The successful completion of this Course implies that you are now better equipped for higher military or other national duties and therefore added responsibilities,’’ he said. 
 
According to him, the administration of Muhammadu Buhari had taken deliberate steps to improve national security, institutional capacity and collaboration with contiguous neighbours. 
 
Earlier, the Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral Mackson Kadiri, said that the college promotes military strategic understanding in the polity and strategic level military training. 
 
Kadiri disclosed that the participants of the Course 27 numbering 127 had passed through a vigorous 11 months processes of the Higher Defence and Strategic Studies course. 
 
“They are now better informed and wiser. More importantly, they are now more capable, willing and ready to serve their nations in any capacity.” 
 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dinner is part of activities lined up ahead of the graduation slated to take place on Friday.

Burna Boy has revealed his plans to have babies with his girlfriend, rapper Stefflon Don, away from public attention. 
 
The ‘Anybody’ singer, expressed the hope to emulate his parents, Samuel and Bose Ogulu, in bringing up his children on a radio show, Beats1, on Hot 97 FM in the U.S. recently. 
 
The singer who also declared his love for Don, a British rapper and singer, stressed that their affair was not a publicity stunt and that it means so much to them. 
 
“It’s not the business part of us; it’s our life. I’m trying to make it right because I don’t want to bring a kid into this life for anyone to be disturbing.

“Looking or wondering what’s Steflon Don and Burna Boy’s kid doing. I want to raise a kid the way I was raised,” he said. 
 
The ‘Killin Dem’ singer pointed out that his relationship with Don was deep and that he would not want the details to be in public space. 
 
“It’s lovely (being with Stefflon Don). I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just that I try to now kind of like keep it between us. 
 
“I don’t want to be putting our thing out there in front of everybody anymore. Like you’d be there and you can see it but I don’t want to put it out there for everyone,” he said. 
 
Burna Boy had, in March, revealed that Don was not just his girlfriend but ‘wifey’, in an interview with Ebro. 
 
Few months after, Stefflon Don had also revealed how she met Burna Boy in Ghana and how she hoped they have kids together. She already has a boy from the previous affair.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has suspended the member representing Babeji/Kiru Local Governments, Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa, for alleged anti-party activities. 
 
The Bebeji Local Government chapter of the party said Kofa was found guilty of alleged anti-party activities was suspended indefinitely. 
 
A statement signed by the Chairman of the APC in Bebeji Local Government, Alhaji Sulaiman Sabo Gwarmai, said Kofa was suspended having confirmed that he carried out various anti-party activities contrary to the provision of the party’s constitution. 
 
Kofa, a member representing Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency, according to the statement was suspended based on the recommendation of a seven-man committee, which was constituted after he was petitioned by party faithful.

The statement further urged the state APC executive to recommended to the national executive for the expulsion of Kofa from the party. 
 
The statement reads in part: “upon a petition received by the APC executive committee of Bebeji Local Government, a seven-man committee was inaugurated to investigate all the issues raised by the petitioner. 
 
“After a thorough investigation the Committee submitted its report and recommendations to the Local Government executive which subsequently met and adopt as follows: 
 
“That having confirmed various anti-party activities by Hon. Abdulmuminu Jibrin Kofa which was found contrary to some provisions of the party’s constitution, ranging from article 21, paragraph A (ii) (V) 
 
“And (Vii) the executive committee adopted the report and herby suspended Hon. Kofa with immediate effect for 12 months. 
 
“That the executive committee also adopted the committee’s recommendation urging the state Executive committee to recommend to the national executive the immediate expulsion of Hon. Abdulmuminu Jibrin Kofa from the party for various offenses.” 
 
Kofa, who was the Campaign Director General of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, lost out in the sharing of the House standing committees, fueling speculation of a rift between him and the Speaker.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday hinted on possible changes in the nation’s security architecture with a view to reinvigorate it in the ongoing fight against terrorism and violent crimes in the country. 
 
The president gave the hint when he received traditional rulers from the South West zone of the country, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. 
 
Buhari told the rulers that already he had recently directed a reshuffle in the army where Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun was promoted and deployed as the army’s Chief of Policy and Plans. 
 
According to him, the government will continue to effect more changes in the army, where necessary, so as to boost the morale of the nation’s troops engaged in various security assignments across the country.

“I believe you are aware that there is a reshuffle in the Army, including the promotion and deployment of Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun as the Nigerian Army’s Chief of Policy and Plans. 
 
“This is done in order to reinvigorate and reenergise our troops to do more. 
 
“There will be further reviews where necessary for maximum performance,’’ he said. 
 
The president said, as the traditional authorities in their communities, government and the security agencies would be relying on them to monitor the several different communities and people coming in and out of their areas. 
 
“Let me be very clear about our firm resolve to change the security architecture of Nigeria. 
 
“It is one of the top priorities for this government but we won’t be able to achieve this goal without the support and input of you, our royal fathers. 
 
“We hope that, for instance, traditional rulers will be able to observe new entrants into the community by requesting leaders of such ethnic groups to notify the traditional authorities of new intakes, thereby creating the opportunities for the gathering of actionable intelligence which tracks such movements in and out of communities thereby offering early warning signals,’’ he said. 
 
The president also assured the traditional rulers and the entire nation that his administration would enforce the law, prosecute law breakers and secure an atmosphere of tranquility for all Nigerians where ever they choose to live and also protect communities from all forms of crimes. 
 
“This is both in our interests as an administration and the interests of the people who voted us into office,’’ he said. 
 
Buhari maintained that the government needed security to deliver on its many programmes to the people, saying “there can be no prosperity if there is no security. 
 
“This is not only a message of hope but a call to action to all of us as we seek ways to secure our country’’. 
 
He warned that the federal government, on its part, would deal decisively with anyone caught fomenting acts of criminal activities by every means necessary. 
 
“We intend to deal severely with those evil Nigerians inciting violence for political ends,’’ he said. 
 
The president also outlined some of his administration’s interventions to check the activities of terrorist groups, banditry and kidnappings in the country. 
 
He said these interventions include an “expedited commencement of community policing, a robust revamping of police intelligence gathering capacity and the significant boosting of the numbers of security personnel in our local communities. 
 
“This in specific terms will include recruiting a lot more police officers and doing so right from their local government areas, where they will train and station them in the best practice of community policing”. 
 
According to him, the government will equally continue to bring in the military when needed to complement the work of the police including the possible deployment of troops on certain highways on a temporary basis. 
 
He stated that the government would also encourage the use of the Air Force assets to bomb hideouts where criminals are located. 
 
While admitting that these measures were inter-related and have to be well-coordinated, he stressed that “the speedy implementation of community policing will facilitate a more effective collection of intelligence. 
 
“This is especially in the area of a more useful and effective intelligence-gathering process that traditional rulers will play some of the most critical roles,” he said. 
 
Earlier, the Ooni of Ife, as well as other traditional rulers with him, had individually appraised the president with security challenges they were facing in their domains and called on him to support their efforts in addressing the issues.
