This was a special game, the first of eight Premier League games before the end of December and one we needed to win. “There was not enough from the heart. See how they killed our fellow soldiers, they burn them inside the tanks”, a narrator in the video said.<br /> <br /> “They are using us to make money; why? Are we not human beings? They can kill soldiers inside a tank; if Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) can penetrate M-RAG vehicle, what of a fellow human being?<br /> <br /> “This is the location called ‘Metele’, This is a place they (the insurgents) took over 40 barrel and these people want to use us, and within one week they killed over 200 soldiers and we are now 147, they want to waste us here. It is a lie, our blood is not here.<br /> <br /> “This is a Third World vehicle, a tank manufactured in 1972; and Albarnawi broke all of it.They want to use us and we are not getting anything from them.We want to tell the government of our condition.<br /> <br /> “Please; the Federal Government should intervene before the insurgents come and kill us. They mocked us and said we are Zombies; animals, we do not know our rights, any order given to us we will follow.<br /> <br /> “We are millennium soldiers, most of us are graduates.<br /> <br /> “Look at what they did to this T12 tank; it is obsolete. It was a 1983 Czechoslovakian tank procured during Shagari’s regime. Is this the money the Federal Government provided to procure weapons?<br /> <br /> “All the equipment are not working. When it fired two shots it stopped. All the weapons are obsolete and bought during Shagari(1979-1983).<br /> <br /> “We know about the money the Federal Government gave to them but the Nigerian Army had turned us into a business”.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> “All the money federal government gave them to buy weapons… Nigerian Army is buying INNOSON…. All these are obsolete… Oyinbo came here and said they are obsolete. All these weapons were bought during the Shagari regime in 1983… They have turned us to business…. Federal Government you will hear about it….<br /> <br /> “All these weapons are not genuine…if you fire two times you have stoppages. This is 1983 when Shagari was head of state… Federal Government give them money, they go and buy INNOSON, Nigerian made… Federal Government please help us. Help us.”<br /> <br /> The Nigeria Army on Friday, confirmed on its Twitter handle the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele, on November 18 by Boko Haram insurgents.<br /> <br /> However, the military authorities response, which came five days after, was short on details and the extent of casualties.<br /> <br /> The army said that it has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who become casualties in action, as a form of respect to the families of the gallant troops.<br /> <br /> It noted that the families were first to be notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating their grief were they to discover it from unofficial sources.<br /> <br /> “It is suffice to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate Boko Haram terrorists’ propaganda videos, and alluding it to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion.<br /> <br /> “While; it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists, misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not?<br /> <br /> “So far, the situation in the location is under control as reinforcing units had been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.<br /> <br /> In his reaction, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep shock over the killing of military personnel in Metele village by Boko Haram terrorists.<br /> <br /> He gave an assurance that immediate measures are being taken to ensure that the loopholes which led to the fatalities are blocked once and for all.<br /> <br /> Reacting to the tragic incident, the President said that his administration remains ever committed and focused on the security of military personnel and other citizens.<br /> <br /> According to President Buhari, “No responsible Commander-in-Chief would rest on his oars or fold his hands to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of its military personnel and other citizens. Our loyal forces have proved their strength over the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the needed support in terms of equipment and manpower to succeed in ending the renewed threat. This is not healthy for the civil society.”<br /> <br /> Okereke said there would be more killing of innocent people in what the police claimed was due to “accidental discharge” if the FRSC is armed.<br /> <br /> A retired FRSC commander, who asked not to be identified, agreed.<br /> <br /> “The timing is wrong. Now that elections are approaching we should not encourage anything that can heat up the polity,” he added.<br /> <br /> Unscrupulous politicians could pay corrupt FRSC operatives to use their guns against their opponents, he added.<br /> <br /> Nigerians go to the polls on February 16 next year to elect a new president and parliament, with state governorship and local assembly polls held two weeks later.<br /> <br /> On the roads of Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest city where traffic is a constant headache and tempers flare, drivers already have a lot to deal with.<br /> <br /> They include over-zealous traffic police with sticks and spike strips to burst tyres, officers from the FRSC and its local equivalent the Lagos State Traffic Management.<br /> <br /> Add in the so-called “area boys” or gangs who run the bus stops and depots for the battered yellow minibuses or danfos, driving often resembles a city-wide shakedown for cash.<br /> <br /> “Without weapons, the FRSC is already a fearsome unit,” said Olufemi Oluwaseye, a communications student who is a regular user of public transport.<br /> <br /> “They (the FRSC) have this unique way of instilling discipline, even if temporary, into even the harshest drivers,” he said.<br /> <br /> The argument that they need arms to defend themselves does not fly, he said.<br /> <br /> “We know the argument from government would be that the privilege won’t be abused or that the lives of the FRSC officers on duty are always at risk without weapons,” he said.<br /> <br /> “But the issue is that we would only be creating more power-drunk officers and civilians, unfortunately, would be at the receiving end.”</div>

The fact that you are the head of a department or a division, or a unit, does not isolate you from taking a directive from the CEO. So, if there is anyone, including a legal adviser, who thinks that he is running a different system that is not accountable to the internal structures and power and control within the party, the challenge may be his.<br /> <br /> “But again, those are all part of the distractions. What happens in government and some organisations is that if you don’t pay attention to some minute areas, they become the entry point for opponents to infiltrate and create maximum damage. What are the issues? He was again sworn in in 2011 when he won that year’s presidential election.<br /> <br /> “To the Northern establishment, he was sworn in twice, which was in tandem with the constitution.<br /> <br /> ”So, to allow the former leader to be sworn in for the third time was against the spirit of the constitution, and the Northern establishment would not take that.”<br /> <br /> According to the Northern elder, the second reason was the issue of suspicion and distrust because the Northern establishment believed that the former leader had a hand in Boko Haram.<br /> <br /> “However, event later proved that the former leader was not behind the insurgency. As a former member of APC, we came to realise that Jonathan’s hand was never in Boko Haram.”<br /> <br /> The National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, flayed the ex-president for saying that corruption is worse under the present regime than it was under his administration.<br /> <br /> In a telephone chat with newsmen, Okorie said: “I heard him say that corruption is worse now than when he was in office. Many of us don’t think so.<br /> <br /> “We know that millions of dollars were recovered from some of the people that served under him in raw cash.<br /> <br /> “He even boasted that 200 aircraft were flying about in Nigeria. Where are those aircrafts now?<br /> <br /> “Those people just ran away, knowing that they can’t account for those aircraft.<br /> <br /> “He should know better what the foreign reserve was when he left office and what it is now.<br /> <br /> “He has written his book based on his own perspective, according to his own experience and interpretation of things that happened around him as the president of Nigeria towards the end of his tenure.<br /> <br /> “People are free to criticize the book. If somebody feels so strongly about it, he can write his own too to enrich our literature and knowledge.<br /> <br /> “It is for discerning mind to know which one is the truth and the one that is a lie.”<br /> <br /> While calling for caution over the matter, the President of Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Okechukwu Isiguzoro, aligned with the former president’s claim that some PDP governors worked against his re-election.<br /> <br /> “Former President Goodluck Jonathan is the one wearing the shoe and he knows where it pinches.<br /> <br /> “There is no lie in his claim that some PDP governors worked against his re-election. Boko Haram had already surrendered us.<br /> <br /> “They killed the commander with five other soldiers that were with him in the office.<br /> <br /> “Before we knew it, there was heavy fire from Boko Haram from all sides of the camp with more fire at the entrance.<br /> <br /> “One of our anti-bomb vehicles tried to charge through the barbwire but got hooked. It was a terrible fight.<br /> <br /> “We couldn’t do much because their number and fire power were more than our own.”<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the army command in Maiduguri has evacuated the bodies of the soldiers that were killed by Boko Haram insurgents.<br /> <br /> A military source disclosed that more than 70 bodies were evacuated to Maiduguri by the military after the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole and the GOC, 7 Div yesterday went to Monguno and strategised on recovering the bodies.<br /> <br /> NE checks revealed that the first rescue and evacuation team was foiled after Boko Haram launched an attack on them and they were forced to withdraw.<br /> <br /> The military source who spoke on condition of anonymity said more than 100 soldiers were feared dead in the Metele attack.<br /> <br /> He added: “As at today, the bodies of some of the dead soldiers have been evacuated and brought to Maiduguri. More than 70 bodies have been brought, but I am sure many may not have been recovered.<br /> <br /> “I am not sure, but the soldiers that died in that attack will be more than 100.”<br /> <br /> NE could not verify the story with the army authorities yesterday as calls and text messages to the Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Chukwu Texas, were not responded to.<br /> <br /> NE checks also revealed that Boko Haram has sacked six military formations from that axis since September, each coming with a heavy casualties on the side of the Nigerian troops.<br /> <br /> It will be recalled that Nigerian troops in Metele suffered a similar attack in September this year when about 18 Nigeria soldiers were killed while another 151 soldiers and six officers were declared missing in the same area in another devastating attack on 157 Battalion on October 8, 2018.<br /> <br /> However, the official figure released by the military was that only seven soldiers were killed while 16 others were injured. They claimed to have killed at least 76 Boko Haram fighters in Metele as at then.

As of now, about 11 persons have been rescued alive, while efforts are intensified to rescue the rest.”<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police command Spokesman Nnamdi Omoni said no dead body had been rescued from the collapsed building.<br /> <br /> He said, “It is true that a seven story building under construction collapsed at the GRA area of Port Harcourt. The police and other security agencies have taken over the place to forestall any breakdown of law at the area”.<br /> <br /> “It cannot be ascertained at this point if those still under the collapsed building are dead, but our men have taken over the place to ensure everyone trapped under the building were rescued alive.<br /> <br /> “Some have been rescued and efforts are still on to rescued others. Pay-loaders from the state government, Nigerian Stop oil company and that of SHELL have been deployed to the place to ensure those trapped in the building are successfully rescued as soon as possible.”<br /> <br /> “It is too early now to predict that or how many persons killed since the rescue operation is still going on, it is until the operation is over and the number of persons in the facility at the time of the collapse hasn’t been ascertained. Only when we know the number of persons at the site before we can begin to talk about the number of life lost in the incident.”<br /> <br /> However, details of the project, including the owner and what the structure was meant to serve is yet to be ascertained at press time.
