The All Progressives Congress Professionals in Oyo State has warned Governor Seyi Makinde against wasting the state resources on the People’s Democratic Party affairs over his alleged ambition to run for vice-presidency in 2023.
Arising from its meeting in Ibadan on Friday, the APC-P noted that rather than concentrate on governance, Makinde has endeared himself to mere political jamboree outside the state.
The APC group in the state alleged that going by information within its reach, over N7bn had already been squandered by the governor on activities within the PDP in the last six months.
The Chief Convener of the APC-P, Alhaji Adekunle Lawal, said, “Governor Makinde has completely abandoned governance in Oyo State for his quest to extend his political control to the entire South-West, South-South and some states in the North-Central.”

The group said it was appalling that the governor went as far as Niger State to seek political control using the state’s resources.

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Saturday urged the Federal government and the National Assembly to establish a commission of inquiry to probe the collapse of Prophet T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, in Lagos State.
Fani-Kayode also called for public hearing on the collapsed building.
Recall that SCOAN building had in 2014 collapsed, killing about 115 people.
Following the collapse, there were allegations that the church building was attacked by a flying device, though nobody has been able to prove it.

However, Fani-Kayode called on the National Assembly to conduct public hearing in a bid to resolve the mystery surrounding the building collapse.
In a series of tweets, the former minister wrote: “On September 12th 2014, 6 years ago today, 115 people were killed when a flying device brought down a building in the premises of Prophet T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos, Nigeria. This was an unprecedented and premeditated act of terror yet up until today no-one has been brought to book for it and the authorities have swept the entire event under the carpet.
“Worse of all is the perfidious,self-serving and insidious attempt by the relevant authorities to make the whole thing look as if it was nothing but a terrible accident that took place as a result of a faulty foundation for reasons best known to themselves.
“We remember the Christian martyrs that were killed on that day and we continue to celebrate their lives, share the pain of their families and Church and mourn them.
“My heart goes out to my friend & brother Prophet T.B. Joshua, to SCOAN itself and to the families of all those that were so cruelly murdered on that day. I call on the FG to establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate this matter and I call on the National Assembly to commence a public hearing to establish all the relevant facts.
“The only way we can honor the dead is to bring the full force of the law to bear on those that murdered them. May the souls of the great martyrs that were killed on that day continue to rest in peace and may God expose and bring to justice those that were behind this hideous crime and barbaric act. NEVER AGAIN.”

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo is a major doubt for Super Eagles’ international friendlies against Ivory Coast and Tunisia next month, after he suffered a setback during his recovery.
Aribo has made four appearances for the Eagles and scored twice since he made his debut for the Eagles in a friendly against Ukraine a year ago.
The 24-year-old has been out of action since he scored his first goal of the season in Rangers’ victory over St. Johnstone, before he picked up a calf injury in the encounter.
Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, confirmed the Nigerian would be out of action for an extended period during a press conference on Friday.

“Joe Aribo has had a setback with an ankle strain and will be missing for four to six weeks, Gerrard said.
“It’s a big blow with Joe, he is a player we rate highly, it is actually good news as it was a situation that could have required surgery, but he doesn’t, and we hope he can be back in four weeks.
“It will be a blow, however, as he is a major talent.”
Aribo is set to miss Rangers’ clash against Dundee United, Motherwell and Hibs. He also faces a race against time to feature in the Old Firm derby on October 17.

There was jubilation at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt on Saturday as men of the Rivers State Police Command arrested a most-wanted armed robber and kidnapper popularly known as Bobisky.
Bobisky, whose real name is Honest Digbara, was arrested early Saturday at Korokoro in the Tai Local Government Area in a sting operation led by the Divisional Police Officer of Bori, Superintendent Bako Angbashim.
He was paraded at the headquarters of the command on Mosco Road, Port Harcourt.
Bobisky, a terror to many residents in the Ogoni area of the state, has been linked to most of the criminal activities recorded in the area.

Governor Nyesom Wike had earlier placed a N30 million bounty on Bobisky’s head, saying he will reward any member of the public who can provide useful information that will lead to the arrest of the criminal.

Newly-promoted English Premier League (EPL) clubside Fulham have signed wing-back Ola Aina on a season-long loan from Italian Serie A side Torino.
Fulham also have an option to make the 23-year-old’s arrival permanent and the Nigeria international said he was happy to return to London where he was born and raised.
“It feels amazing to be back closer to my family, back in the capital,” Aina told the club’s media channel.
“There’s a great bunch of lads here. I’m really good friends with Big Hec (Michael Hector) and Josh Onomah.”

Aina, who came through neighbouring Chelsea’s youth system, spent the last two seasons with Torino, where he played 69 times with his versatility allowing him to play on either flank.
“I feel very comfortable on either foot. I can fill in wherever needs be,” he added.
“I’d say I’m pretty quick and I like to attack, but I also like to help the team and do the dirty work as much as I can.”
Aina’s signing follows the capture of midfielder Harrison Reed, goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, right-back Kenny Tete and midfielder Mario Lemina and left-back Antonee Robinson.
Winger Anthony Knockaert’s loan move was also made permanent.
Fulham, who gained promotion to the Premier League after winning the second-tier Championship playoffs last season, begin their campaign on Saturday with a visit from fellow London side Arsenal.

The National Assembly on Friday postponed resumption of plenary sessions by two weeks.
The Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Arc. Olatunde Ojo, in a statement in Abuja, said lawmakers would now resume on Tuesday 29th September, 2020.
It will be recalled that the Senate and the House of Representatives had on Thursday July 23, 2020 adjourned plenary sessions to Tuesday, September 15, 2020, to enable lawmakers observe their annual vacation.
Ojo however did not give any reason for rescheduling the resumption date in his statement.

The statement reads: “This is to inform all Distinguished Senators and Honourable members of the National Assembly that the resumption of plenary session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 15th September, 2020 is hereby rescheduled for Tuesday 29th September, 2020.

Big Brother Housemate, Nengi has adviced her fellow housemate Ozo, to focus on why he came to the Lockdown house.
Ozo was issued a second strike on Friday for breaking one of the rules in the Lockdown house after he was found guilty of writing a love letter to his love interest, Nengi.
However, Nengi who was feeling guilty about the whole suituation told Ozo to leave her and face the game if she’s a distraction to him.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salami Bolaji, has described the fire which engulfed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters, in Akure as an unfortunate occurrence.
Bolaji, who visited the scene of the inferno on Friday, said the Police Command, in conjunction with INEC management and the Ondo State Fire Service, will launch an investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak.
It was reported that over 5,141 card readers meant for the state governorship poll on Oct. 10 were destroyed in the fire incident which occurred on Thursday.
Reacting, Salami said it was regrettable that the incident happened close to the date of the governorship election in the state.

The commissioner assured all law-abiding citizens of adequate security during the poll, adding that people should not entertain any fear as the command was fully prepared to give the state a kind of police protection never seen in Ondo State.
He also warned those harbouring criminal ideas, before, during or after the election and electioneering campaigns, to jettison such ideas.

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said the country is becoming a failed state and divided under President Muhammadu.
Obasanjo claimed Nigeria needs to be rescued from the brink of collapse.
He said this while delivering a speech titled, ‘Moving Nigeria Away from Tipping Over’ at a consultative dialogue attended by representatives of Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and Pan Niger Delta Forum.
The event was held in Abuja on Thursday.

Obasanjo also said the country is becoming a ‘basket case’ economically
“Today, Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state; economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country.
“And these manifestations are the products of recent mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development of our country.
“Old fault lines that were disappearing have opened up in greater fissures and with drums of hatred, disintegration and separation and accompanying choruses being heard loud and clear almost everywhere,” he warned.
Obasanjo further warned people beating drums of war and calling for secession, to remember that if Nigeria breaks into several nations, the citizens would still be neighbours and would need to interact with one another.

Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has enjoined local chapters where the conditions of service has not improved to continue with the industrial action at the respective States.
The NARD had in its National Executive Council, NEC, resolved to suspend the ongoing indefinite nationwide strike from today, Friday, 11th of September 2020, by 8 a.m.
Dr. Sokomba Aliyu, Dr. Bilqis Muhammad and Dr. Egbogu Stanley, President, Secretary General and Publicity/Social Secretary, respectively in a communique issued at the end of its virtual National Executive Council, appreciated Nigerians for standing with them during the period of its industrial disharmony.
The NEC noted the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to procure Group life insurance, while appreciating the inclusion of the 2020 Medical Residency Training in the revised 2020 budget and the promise of the Federal government to effect payment within two weeks.
The NEC noted with satisfaction that government hats approved the release of 8.9 billion naira to offset the outstanding balance of April/May and June COVID-19 hazard inducement allowance to all health workers.
According to the communique, “NEC noted the decision of the government to determine revised hazard allowance as soon as possible.”
It also noted that the outstanding salary shortfall of 2014, 2015, 2016 has not been paid to her members.
It observed the plight of her members in state tertiary hospitals, such as the non-domestication and non-implementation of Medical Residency Training Act at the state level, the non-implementation of appropriate salary structure, and the non-payment of owed salaries.

Apparently disturbed by the drumbeats of war echoing ahead of the Edo guber polls on September 19, the apex electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has insisted that Governor Godwin Obaseki and his rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu must sign a peace accord next week Tuesday.
The apex body on Electoral matters made this declaration in a press briefing  in Abuja ahead the guber polls.
Chairman of INEC, Mahmoud Yakubu said the candidates participating in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State will sign a peace accord on Tuesday.
Mahmood also said about 17,000 ad hoc staff would be recruited for the election, noting that the PTF guidelines and safety measured would be strictly obeyed as the commission was going to operate a no-facemask, no voting policy at the poll.
Before now, the reverred Oba of Bini too had summoned both Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu to the palace where he cautioned both leaders and their followers to shun violence and embrace peace before and after the guber polls.
Tension and fears of bloodshed had gripped Edolites who believe that the election may lead to turmoil if not quickly nipped in the bud.

A federal court in New York on Thursday rejected a bid by President Donald Trump to exclude undocumented migrants from the US census, a setback for the president who has long touted his fight against illegal immigration.
The census counts every person in the country every 10 years, as the basis for determining representation in the 435-seat House of Representatives.
In July Trump gave the unprecedented order to exclude illegal immigrants from the population count.
Prosecutors in many states, including New York, quickly challenged the government’s right to give such an order in court, amid fears it would reduce the number of such migrants who participated in the census.

On Thursday three federal judges in Manhattan found the government order to be illegal and a violation of the constitutional mandate to count every person in the country, according to a written ruling.
“We cannot allow the White House’s constant fearmongering and xenophobia to stop us from being counted,” New York State Attorney Letitia James said in a statement Thursday, hailing the ruling as “another major victory.”
The Supreme Court ruled last year that the government’s decision to ask for the citizenship of census participants, a question that had not been asked for more than 60 years, was illegal.

Serie A champions, Juventus have reportedly agreed on a ‘deal in principle’ to sign Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.
Juventus are looking for a new striker after agreeing to release Gonzalo Higuain, with Barcelona’s Luis Suarez believed to be their top target.
According to Gianluca DiMarzio, Juventus now sees Giroud as target alternatives to Suarez, with the France international facing a battle to maintain a first-team spot at Chelsea this season.
Giroud have reached an agreement in principle with the Old Lady over a two-year deal at 4.5 million per season.

Chelsea have rejected an offer from Inter Milan involving Christian Eriksen or Marcelo Brozovic plus cash, in a swap deal for N’Golo Kante, according to The Telegraph.
The Premier League giants have made it clear they have no interest in a deal including Eriksen, after Inter insinuated the former Tottenham Hotspur star was available in exchange for Kante this summer.
Inter Milan may still return with another bid for Kante but this will only be feasible if they are able to raise funds through player sales.
Recall that Chelsea had placed a massive £80m price tag on Kante.

Kante, 29, had emerged as a target for Inter Milan head coach, Antonio Conte, who is targeting at least three players from the Blues this summer.
Conte is preparing to raid his former club, to improve his squad ahead of the new season.
The Italian gaffer wants to be reunited with Kante, as well as left-back, Emerson Palmieri and striker Olivier Giroud.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Malang Sarr this summer.
Frank Lampard’s side are also closing in on an agreement for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The fire that razed the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Akure, Ondo State, destroyed thousands of card readers.
The inferno started at about 8.20 p.m. and consumed a large container.
Fire Service arrived at the scene one hour later but their equipment failed to function.
Festus Okoye, INEC Information Commissioner, assured that the occurence would not stop the poll.

NAN quoted him as saying that 5,141 card readers to be used for the Ondo governorship election were burnt.
However, INEC has deployed additional five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and three National Commissioners (NCs) for the Edo governorship poll.
The election will be held next Saturday.
The RECs from five geopolitical zones will work with the Edo State REC, Johnson Alalibo.
It was gathered that the deployment was not made public to avoid pressure from politicians.
A peace meeting of the Abdusalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee is expected to hold next Tuesday in Benin.
INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, gave the hint during his last visit to Edo.
The leading candidates are Governor Godwin Obaseki (People’s Democratic Party) and Osagie Ize-Iyamu (All Progressives Congress).

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, says the federal government is not considering negotiations with Process and Industrial Development Limited (P&ID).
Last week, the English Court granted the government’s request to contest a $9.6billion fine in favour of P&ID.
The Buhari administration is seeking to reverse the judgement on a controversial Gas Supply and Processing Agreement (GSPA).
On Thursday, Malami’s spokesman, in a statement said Nigeria will ensure that the company doesn’t reap from where it didn’t sow.

“There will be no negotiation or talk of settlement with P&ID or any related party by or on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria”, he stressed.
“The recent judgment of the English Commercial Court confirmed our view that P&ID and its cohorts are fraudsters who have exploited our country. They will not benefit from their corrupt behavior.”
Malami called that matter a classic case with overwhelming fraudulent and corrupt undertones.
The AGF added that the government remains committed to overturn the exorbitant award without paying one Naira of public money.

Nengi seems to have had it enough with Ozo who is obviously in love with her.
Ozo has been seen at different times in the house following Nengi and trying to be involved in everything she does.
Nengi got fed up of him and confronted him on Friday morning.

The BBNaija female housemate complained that Ozo is not allowing her socialize with other housemates, which is affecting her game in the house.
Nengi said: “I’m worried for us, we don’t socialize and spend too much time together away from the housemates.
“Free me sometimes, we don’t have to discuss about everything. I don’t like stress at all you keep talking about issues that stressed me out.
“You always want to talk about something even when I want to sleep. I’m tired of complaining and I feel you need to understand and leave me alone.
“I understand you like me a lot and want to talk to me but sometimes just free me I hate when someone tries to force me.”

The total number of COVID-19 patients successfully discharged now stands at 43,810 while fatalities stand at 1,075.

Nigerians and other foreigners in the United Arab Emirates whose resident visas had expired have till November 17 to leave the Gulf country. 
 
This followed the suspension of visa extension for foreign residents and expatriates by the UAE government on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, residents with visas that expired before March 1 had until August 18 to leave the country without having to pay a fine, but now, they have until November 17. 
 
The authorities said those who violated the directive would be deported and would also pay fines under the UAE immigration regulations. 
 
Under its modified COVID-19 visa policies that took effect August 1, foreign residents currently in the country have until October 10 to renew expired visas. 
 
According to the UAE official portal, https://u.ae/#, tourists and visit visa holders have a grace period of 10 days to renew their visas or they would be fined AED 200 (N20,476) for the first day of overstay; AED100 (N10,373) each consecutive day and AED 100, as service fees. 
 
In the case of UAE residents, they have 30 days’ grace period after visa expiry to either amend their status and get another resident visa or leave the country. 
 
Fines do not apply during the grace period, but if they overstayed after the grace period, they will be fined AED 125 for the first day; AED 25 for each subsequent day; AED 50 per day after six months of overstaying and AED 100 per day after one year of overstaying. 
 
“Residents with expired visas who wish to leave the country should cancel their expired visas prior to departure. Their visa cancellation documents will show the grace period they have to exit the country,” the directive said. 
 
But officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who spoke on condition of anonymity noted that the Nigerians, including Pakistanis, Iranians, Bangladeshis and Indians, ignored the directive to leave the country. 
 
A senior official said, “With the expiration/cancellation of their visas, the Nigerians and other foreigners affected by the policy have become illegal migrants. What this means is that the UAE authorities would arrest and deport them and the expenses would be borne by the deportees.” 
 
The official said the affected Nigerian nationals would have to obtain COVID-19 medical result and emergency travel certificate before they can return home. 
 
It was  also learnt that the affected individuals might face a two-year travel ban if deported from the Gulf country. 
 
Findings ewvealed that the UAE authorities hitherto jailed illegal migrants for two months before expelling them. 
 
When contacted, the spokesman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, said the commission was aware of the situation and would make its position known soon. 
 
The spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ferdinand Nwonye, said the government had yet to take a position on the issue.

 The Independent National Electoral Commission said it will probe the cause of the fire that ravaged about 5,141 Smart Card Readers loaded in a container at its office in Akure. 
 
INEC national commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye said this on Thursday night in a statement on the Twitter handle of the commission.

The fire began at about 7.30pm and was only limited to the container. 
 
Okoye, who also witnessed the fire, was in Ondo state in connection with preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for 10th October 2020. 
 
He and other local staff of the commission rushed to the office at about 8pm. 
 
The Administrative Secretary of the State, Mr. Popoola and some staff of the Commission were among those who rushed to the office, as firemen battled to snuff off the fire.. 
 
According to Okoye, “investigation into the cause of the fire will commence promptly after the fire has been contained. 
 
Okoye however said the fire will not affect the scheduled governorship election. 
 
He said card readers would be mopped up from other states not conducting elections for the Ondo governorship poll. 
 
“The fire Service men are still battling to put it out and we are confident that it would soon be put out. 
 
“This is just one state election. What we are going to do is to mop up smart card readers from other states and use them for the conduct of the election while investigating what happened. 
 
“The cost of 5,141 smart card readers is so much, but we are not going to dwell on that now. 
 
“What we are going to dwell on is to mop up smart card readers from other states that are not conducting elections and use them to conduct Ondo governorship election. 
 
“We will dwell on other issues regarding the configuration of the cards readers.”

It was learnt that 18 persons were arrested, including Dagga Tolar, Ayo Ademiluyi, Chinedu Bosah, Lexan Ali, Fidel Davynovich, Oluwole Engels and Hassan Soweto. 
 
In a statement by its National Organising Secretary, Dimeji Macaulay, SPN said: “It is completely unacceptable. We enjoin all Nigerians interested in preserving this country’s hard-earned democracy to condemn this emboldened descent into a civilian-military dictatorship. 
 
“We demand a public apology from the police for this ridiculous and unprofessional action taken against our comrades. We ask that proper disciplinary measures be taken against the security officers involved. 
 
“It’s important for you to note that demonstrations and protests are a global phenomenon and are a part of the development of any society.” 
 
Raising the alarm about the arrest, Soweto, who is SPN’s National Youth Leader, said: “We have just been arrested alongside some journalists for protesting this morning against fuel price and electricity tariff hike as well as the deregistration of SPN. I am typing this message at the back of a police van taking us to Area C of the Police Command in Lagos.” 
 
The International Press Centre (IPC) in Lagos also condemned the arrest of the four journalists. 
 
A statement by its Programme Officer/Safety Desk Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, reads: “The IPC in Lagos, Nigeria, hereby condemns the unlawful arrest of four journalists – Ifeoluwa Adediran of Premium Times, Abiodun Ayeoba of Sahara Reporters, Awoniyi Oluwatosin of Objective Media and Daniel Tanimu of Galaxy Television – early today (September 10, 2020), while covering a peaceful protest on the fuel price increase in Yaba, Lagos State. 
 
“Spokesperson for the organisers of the protest – the Socialist Party of Nigeria – Comrade Hassan Soweto, who was equally arrested, confirmed that ‘the cameras and phones of the journalists were seized while they were taken to the Lagos State Police Command’. 
 
“IPC disapproves the harassment and brutalisation of the journalists in the course of legitimate duty and particularly decries the seizure and damage to their working tools. 
 
“IPC demands the immediate and unconditional release of the journalists. The police should also return their seized gadgets and pay compensation for the damaged ones. 
 
“IPC reiterates that the right to peacefully assemble and ventilate grievances over government policies is covered by the laws of the federation and should not be tampered with arbitrarily.” 
 
Also, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said it will begin a nationwide protest on the increases in fuel price and electricity tariff as from Monday, September 14, 2020 to demand a reversal. 
 
Addressing reporters in Abuja, NANS National President Danielson Akpan said: “Nigerians are bewildered that having been under months of lockdown and restrictive measures, welcoming them back to normal life with increases in prices of essential commodities is a burden too harsh for the citizens to bear. 
 
“Nigerian students, in particular, will be hard hit by these policies and, therefore, cannot concentrate or cope with studies as their usually managed ‘101’ feeding standard can no longer be guaranteed. Many students have been forced out of school already due to high cost of living and deteriorating economic conditions of their families. 
 
“As you already know, Nigerian students have been protesting against the latest announced prices as directed by the National Secretariat of the association. The protests will continue as planned… 
 
“Precisely, on Monday, September, 14, 2020, Nigerian students shall be making a loud statement in a mass protest across the six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to demand outright reversal of the insensitive price hikes.”

Serena Williams battled into a US Open semi-final showdown with Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday as top men’s seeds Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev booked their spots in the last four.
Williams seeded third, came from a set down to overcome unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova and keep alive her bid for a 24th singles Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
Later, Azarenka blew away Belgium’s Elise Mertens as she continues her hunt for a first Grand Slam title in seven years.
Williams’ comeback included two astonishing shots with her left hand that contributed to winning points.

“At that point, I was fighting so hard. I was just trying to do everything I can whether righty or lefty,” she said.
A sluggish start saw the American lose the first 6-4, but she fought back to take the next two 6-3, 6-2, in 2hr 12min inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“I never give up and you know I just gotta keep going,” Williams added.
Williams smashed 20 aces, the most she has had in eight years, taking her tally for the tournament to 64 so far.
The record for the most number of aces in a US Open in the women’s singles is 70, set by Williams in 1999 when she won for the first time.
“Sometimes when I’m serving, I just tell myself, I don’t care if my arm falls off, I’m going to keep serving,” she said.
Williams is looking to match Margaret Court’s record for the most number of singles Grand Slam wins.
It has been more than three years since she won her 23rd at the 2017 Australian Open — when she was already pregnant with daughter Olympia.
Williams has come close since, reaching four major finals only to come away empty-handed.
In the last four, she will renew her rivalry with former world number Azarenka who demolished Mertens 6-1, 6-0 in just 1hr 13 min.
Williams defeated Azarenka in the final of the US Open in 2012 and 2013.
The last few years of Azarenka’s career have been interrupted by a custody battle over her son who was born in 2016.
Azarenka said she found it “hard to accept losses” when she was young and at the top of her game, but was now benefiting from a more philosophical attitude.
“I enjoy the moment no matter what it is. I take life as it comes,” Azarenka told reporters.
“It took me a long road to come here with a lot of struggles, a lot of understanding, forcing me to find this route, this path, if you can say that. But I’m here and I’m happy.”
In the men’s draw, Russia’s third seed Medvedev downed compatriot and childhood friend Andrey Rublev 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).
Twenty-two-year-old Rublev raced to a 5-1 lead in the first-set tie-break before Medvedev, last year’s US Open runner-up, hauled back to win it 8-6 with an ace.
Medvedev, 24, smashed 16 aces and won 89 percent of first-serve points. He made 75 percent of returns to Rublev’s 54 percent.
“One point decided two sets so it was a really tough match and Andrey was playing unbelievable actually,” Medvedev said.
Medvedev will play second seed Thiem who demolished Australia’s Alex de Minaur, seeded 21st, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
“I had a great feeling from the first moment on,” said the Austrian.

As tertiary institutions reopen next Monday in Lagos State, the state government says final-year students will go back to the classrooms before students on other levels.
Tokunbo Wahab, Special Adviser on Education to Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, made this known on Thursday while featuring on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily.
Schools in the country had been shut in March as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.
But the Federal Government announced the resumption of graduating pupils last month to write this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination from August 17, 2020, through September 12, 2020.

Sanwo-Olu had subsequently announced the reopening of schools in the state starting with tertiary institutions on September 14, 2020.
“I am pleased to announce that our tertiary institutions will be allowed to reopen from September 14, 2020, all our tertiary institutions,” the governor had said, adding that secondary and primary schools would resume a week after.
Speaking on Thursday, Wahab explained that the government had put in place necessary facilities and processes to ensure a safe reopening of classrooms in the state.
He also emphasised that the students in the state will resume in phases.
The governor’s aide said, “Basically, we are at a point where scientifically we’ve been proven to have flattened the curve. And it invariably means that we are not as exposed as we used to be some five, four, three months back. So, consequently, we have to find a way to bring our lives back to normal. And in doing that, education is very critical to whatever we are going to do.
“In the past few weeks, we’ve been putting in place measures and facilities that will enable our children come back to school.
“Even at that, what we seek to do from next week is to start a phased reopening of our tertiary institutions.
“On the 14th we have announced that our tertiary institutions are going to open to our students for the first time after six months.”
Wahab said the students have been having their lectures online all the while and “they are going to come on campus to have their revision one-on-one and then they can now have their exams and their projects.”
Continuing, he said, “For our tertiary (institutions) from on the 14th, we are going to start with the final year students across our tertiary institutions. With those final-year students, we are sure that they are older, they are more mature, and they are going to meet up with the protocol as put in place by the institutions based on the regulations of the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control).
“After we have phased them out, maybe after their exams, then, those in the penultimate year will come on campus. So, we are not going to put all our students on campus at the same time.
“For our secondary from on the 21st, they are also going to have a phased resumption.”

Senior pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa, has said that the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State had perfected plans to further inflict pain on the people of the state through the Internal Revenue Service Building he (Tinubu) commissioned last week Saturday.
He again urged the electorate not to allow Akeredolu who is the candidate of the APC in the October election to win.
Giwa said the body language of people of the state had rejected Governor Akeredolu and his party.
According to Giwa, rigging is the only machine left for Akeredolu and the APC.

“Anywhere you see money, you see Asiwaju Tinubu. You can’t take your possessions to the grave, impossible!,” Giwa said in a statement to newsmen on Thursday.
“Should governor Akeredolu rig himself to power again, the people of Ondo state must prepare to pay taxes heavily to Chief Tinubu through the newly inaugurated internal revenue.
“They have concluded plans to further inflict pain on the people. Can’t you see how their government has jacked up fuel price and electricity tariff?
“Has Tinubu talked?, No, he cannot because he is one of the beneficiaries. It’s just a matter of time, we shall know where we are heading to.
“Ondo people must defend their votes; they must know their right hands from the left. We must do everything to avoid errors in the past.
“How much was the hospital card for patients before governor Akeredolu took over, and how much is it now?
“This government increased tuition fees from N25,000 to N150,000, N180,000 outrageously. This time around, they have perfected plans to make the people suffer.”

Paris Saint-Germain have offered Julian Draxler in exchange for Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, L’Equipe reports.
Guendouzi is out of favour at the Emirates, following a number of disciplinary issues under Mikel Arteta.
The French midfielder was frozen out after the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat at Brighton in June, in which he taunted some opposition players about how much they earn.
His future at the Emirates looks bleak and the club wants to move him on for a fee around £30million.

No fewer than forty-seven thousand (47,000) people applied for 2,000 Amotekun jobs in Oyo State.
Chairman, Oyo State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps, General Kunle Togun, made this declaration in Ibadan on Wednesday.
He spoke during the screening and verification exercise that commenced on Wednesday across the state.
It was gathered that the security outfit was formed in order to complement the efforts of the police and other security agencies.

Governor from the six south-western states had agreed to form the Western Nigeria Security Network also known as Amotekun in a bid to put an end to security challenges in the geopolitical zone.
But Togun, while addressing journalists on Wednesday disclosed that a background check on criminal records of the applicants will also be done.
He said, “Over 47,000 persons applied, while we are to take 2,000 for now. Graduates, school certificate holders and those that do not have any educational background applied.
“We asked them questions on what operations they had done in the past. We want to know if they are experienced and active, what role they played in their various groups. We’ll also check to know if they have had criminal records.
“Some gave incoherent information about where they came from; some did not give facts about the local government areas they claim to hail from.”

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to give 20 cars to deserving teachers across the six education districts in the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the promise on Wednesday during the virtual training of the teachers tagged ”Eko Educators Webinar Performance Series 3.3”.
He said that his administration was committed to rewarding excellent service delivery in Lagos State Post-Primary Teaching Service.
According to him, teachers are key change agents who will be remembered for shaping future generation of leaders.

He urged them to embrace technology in improving the quality of teaching to enhance their productivity.
”This is the era of technology and it is working well for us. Technology has become a very strong tool that we cannot do away with in our everyday lives. With technology, we can think locally and act globally,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor said that great teachers were always remembered for the lives they shaped, just as they derived satisfaction in seeing their students become role models and future leaders.
On her part, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, said that any school system thrived on the quality of teaching and learning which was exhibited through the quality of teachers with a multiplier effect on the students.
Adefisayo commended Lagos State teachers for indulging in self-development to complement the government organised training.
Adefisayo also commended the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) board for the idea of the virtual training, which was vital to the progress of the education sector in the state.
She said that as the present administration’s battle against the COVID-19 continued, teachers were expected to put in their best in guiding the children aright, especially those who might had gone through different forms of abuse and trauma during the lockdown period.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs Elizabeth Ariyo, said that the webinar was a conscious effort of the commission to improve teaching styles, optimise the teaching profession and enhance the lives of the children, and ultimately, their future.
Ariyo said that the webinar was organised for Post-Primary School Teachers in Lagos State as a way of elevating their level of preparedness and pro-activeness in teaching and learning in order to meet the challenges of the ‘new normal’.
”The platform intends to address teachers’ wellness and well-being, as well as update them on new trends to improve their teaching skills,” she said.
Ariyo appreciated the generosity of Gov. Sanwo-Olu for the approval of the Teachers’ Exit Replacement programme with over 1,000 new appointees and the Retrospective Course approval for over 700 Teachers which had lingered since 2013.
She also commended the governor for the approval of digital training of all Post-Primary Schools Teachers on Microsoft Teams platform; and Capacity Enhancement of Teachers in Lagos State among other initiatives, which had boosted proper integration of TESCOM in the ”new normal”.
The Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs Toyin Awoseyi, said that the presence of the governor at the webinar affirmed his commitment to education.
Awoseyi urged the participants to put in their best for the development and progress of the sector in the state.

National Assembly member, Senator Biodun Olujimi, has accused former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose of moving against Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over the governor’s stance on truth in the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State. 
Olujimi, who described Makinde as the party’s leader in the South-West geo-political zone, urged the governor to discountenance moves against him, but continue with his quest “to reposition, galvanise and salvage the party from the brinks of collapse”. 
Fayose had on Wednesday warned the governor not to meddle into political affairs in Ekiti State. 
But the senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, who spoke in Ado Ekiti at a meeting of her faction of the PDP, described Fayose, including his collaborators as ‘political jobbers’ and asked Makinde to ignore their threats. 
<a name='more' id="more"></a>She said, “Makinde is the symbol of the party in the South-West. So, anything that must come from the zone must come through. Fayose and his conspirators’ visit to Uche Secondus was nothing but a recreational. I can take anybody to the National Secretariat of the party and we take pictures. 
“What is important is what was said. While they were there nothing could have been said. We stand by Makinde because nobody can rubbish him and wish him away. This is the best time South-West Zone needs the governor most when ‘hijackers’ are trying to undermine the party’s structure through egregious conspiracy.” 
PDP State Factional Chairman, Kehinde Odebunmi, who spoke on behalf of the stakeholders, said, the party had resolved to “give Makinde all the needed support towards bringing South-West PDP out of political oblivion”, hence their nod for him “to continue with his resolve to build a strong and united PDP in the zone.”

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has found two doctors – Iyoha Joseph and Mukaila Oyewumi Oladipo – guilty of negligence in the management of a baby, Oluwole Johnson Peace (now deceased).

In a seven-count charge, the tribunal noted that the doctors were manifestly incompetent in the management of the three-month-old baby and failed to administer the right treatment on the patient. 
 
Delivering judgment in Abuja, tribunal Chairman Prof. Abba Hassan Waziri said Dr. Joseph, who was found guilty of three count charges, did not exhibit reasonable diligence when he prescribed and caused to be administered on the three-month old baby, oral chloroquine, Fansidar and several other drugs. 
 
The chairman said he thereby exposed the baby to multiple anti-malarial and other drugs when the baby had been placed on Artemether injunction. 
 
It also said Oladipo, who was found guilty of a two-count charge, even though he found the patient to be asphyxiated and in obvious respiratory distress, wasted time by taking the patient’s history for more than 30 minutes, rather than attend to the clear case of emergency.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a pastor in Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state for allegedly extorting the sum of N550,000 from a woman. 
 
It was gathered that the pastor, Emmanuel Mokogwu, claimed to have been ordained at the Winners’ Chapel four years ago.

It was learnt that he visited one Miss Theresa Okolie and prophesied that death was lurking around her. 
 
The 33-year-old pastor allegedly collected N550,000 from the victim to cleanse the house of demonic spirits. 
 
The victim said, “I think the pastor used a charm on me because immediately he told me that my house was covered in darkness and harboured the spirit of untimely death, I started running about to gather money for him. 
 
“I gave him N350,000 that I kept for my farm and in the process of borrowing the balance from a friend, the police were alerted.” 
 
But when contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said she had yet to get the details of the incident from the Olana Divisional Police Officer as of the time of filing this report. 
 
“I can’t reach the Olana DPO yet, I will get back to you after getting the details of the incident from him,” she said.

Marketers free to sell petrol at suitable prices, PPPRA tells Nigerians

Barely 24 hours after depot owners called for full deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, the Nigerian government has said it is already implementing the policy. 
 
The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), the government agency that regulates petroleum products prices in the country, in Abuja on Tuesday, said the sector is now fully deregulated as it no longer fixes fuel prices. 
 
On Monday, depot owners under the platform of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) urged the government to introduce full deregulation policy without delay to enhance the growth of the petroleum industry and ensure the development of the country’s economy.

The Chairman of DAPPMAN, Winifred Akpani, who is also the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Northwest Petroleum and Gas Company Limited, said a full deregulation of downstream sector operations would ensure seamless business and enhance transparency, competitiveness and sustainable growth. 
 
Reacting to the call, PPPRA said since the introduction of the deregulation policy in March, it has ceased to play any role in determining fuel prices. 
 
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Abdulkadir Saidu, said under the new arrangement, marketers are now solely responsible for determining retail fuel prices in the country based on market fundamentals. 
 
In April, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, had said the deregulation policy, a fuel price modulation mechanism would be established to determine prices. 
 
The minister said the government would no longer be directly involved in fixing fuel prices, but the private sector would be allowed to take over the process through the marketers. 
 
The arrangement, he said, would allow the government to focus on its traditional role of monitoring and enforcing compliance with regulations to avoid profiteering by the marketers. 
 
The minister said the PPPRA would establish a special committee to monitor market fundamentals, including cost of foreign exchange, bank interest rate by importers of petroleum products, to provide a monthly price advisory to fuel marketers. 
 
Mr Sylva said the committee would include all the players in the fuel market, including the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Independent and Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria. 
 
Between April and June, the committee, at the beginning of every month, gave fuel price advisories in the form of a fuel price band within which marketers’ retail prices were expected to fall. 
 
Initially, based on the advice by the PPPRA, fuel price was in April adjusted from N145 per litre to a band of N125 and 123 per litre in April. In May, the price was adjusted further to a band of between N121.50 and N123.50 per litre, and later in June to price band of between N140.80 and N143.80 per litre. 
 
However, since July, the PPPRA has not issued a formal price advice to give a price band for the fuel marketers, resulting in price regimes that confuse the public about the indices the marketers used to arrive at them. 
 
Since then, consumers have relied on ex-depot prices issued by the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), the distribution and marketing arm of the NNPC, to guess retail fuel pump prices. 
 
Ex-depot prices are those given to fuel marketers and depot owners to lift petroleum products from NNPC depots for onward distribution to retail outlets across the country. 
 
Critics have accused the government and the PPPRA of abandoning consumers to fuel marketers to exploit with arbitrary prices. 
 
Asked if the PPPRA has abdicated its responsibility, its Executive Secretary, through the General Manager, Administration and Human Resources, Victor Shidok, said the role of the agency has since been restricted to monitoring oil marketers against profiteering. 
 
“Going forward, fuel prices would be determined by the forces of demand and supply and the international cost of crude oil. We will not get involved to avoid being accused by Nigerians of continuing to fix prices. 
 
“Every petrol marketer is free under the current arrangement to source for products and determine their prices in a way that would allow them to remain in business. 
 
“However, this must be in accordance with our code of conduct established for all operators. As the regulatory authority, the PPPRA has a duty to protect the consumers, while ensuring the operators abide by our codes of conduct,” Mr Saidu said.

Dr Frederic Oladeinde, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, says the state government plans to acquire 2000 units of 11 and 13 seats micro buses to ease gridlock in the state.

Oladeinde made the disclosure during an oversight visit by the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation, led by Mr Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaiye I), on Wednesday in Lagos. 
 
“Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved plans to partner with private investors for the initial acquisition of the 2000 units buses. 
 
“The state shall provide counterpart funding of 40 per cent while the supplier will inject 60 per cent equity for the acquisition of the buses. 
 
“The private operator shall be required to make 20 per cent down payment to be eligible to come under the bus finance scheme. 
 
“The state has engaged two companies to provide 1000 buses each, to be used for the First and the Last Mile Bus Schemes. 
 
“They are Origin Automobile Services which will provide the 11 seat buses while CFAO will provide 13 seat buses,” he said. 
 
The commissioner explained that this would further reduce traffic congestion at key major gridlock points in the state, with corresponding reduction in travel time. 
 
He said the move was a giant stride to enhance integration between different mode of transportation making it seamless to travel. 
 
According to him, the state government is promoting a transport system with significantly less adverse impact on the environment. 
 
Oladeinde noted that in order to ensure proper bus tracking under the BRT, an intelligent transport system had been implemented. 
 
He said: “Two control centres have been set up at the Ikeja Bus Terminal and at the LBSL Oshodi Terminal. 
 
“LAMATA control centre is being upscaled to accommodate the monitoring of the BRT busses, so we are starting the pilot of our Common Ticketing System by next month October. 
 
“We have also engaged all stakeholders on the value chain of the e-ticketing system,” he said. 
 
Oladeinde said the state government had also introduced a fare collection strategy to ease the BRT payment system. 
 
The commissioner said the Lagos State Cowry Travel Card System would be adopted to improve the fare collection strategy in the state. 
 
He explained that a validator would be provided on every bus while a central switching company had been engaged to carry out the reconciliation and settlement of the fare. 
 
The commissioner added that a distance based fare matrix system had also been developed to determine the fare of passengers on each trip. 
 
The commissioner noted that the Blue and the Red rail lines project had remained the flagship of the governor’s administration. 
 
He explained that the first phase, which was the Marina to Mile 2, was expected to commence passenger operations by the second quarter of 2022. 
 
Oladeinde said the contract for the red line rail project had been signed and planned to commence operations in the second quarter of the 2022. 
 
He said the red line would share track with the standard gauge system of the Lagos Ibadan rail modernisation project of the federal government. 
 
He noted that the track sharing agreement with the Federal Government was signed in March 2020. 
 
Responding, Adewale said the transportation ministry was one of the tough ministries because it had infrastructural decay during the past administration. 
 
He said: “From the beginning of the past administration, the people of the state were asking what was the state doing as regards the gridlock in the state. 
 
“This prompted me to move a motion in the floor of the house as regards the transport situation in the state. 
 
“But today, we are here to perform our oversight function to know how far you had gone, the challenges you faced, how well you had utilised the budget in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.” 
 
The lawmaker said he was extremely impressed with the performance of the commissioner, adding that if he continued, the state would be able to achieve the transport system. 
 
Adewale said the amendment of the Transport Law had passed second reading in the House and waiting for public hearing soon. 
 
He said the enforcement officers should also be well taken care of, in terms of welfare packages, beyond the uniforms but their health insurance must be improved. 
 
According to him, once we have all these in place, we won’t have them taking bribes or they are not generating revenues that are supposed to be accrued to the state. 
 
He said the regulation of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) must be looked into with immediate effect. 
 
Adewale said their excesses should be checked so the effort of the ministry would not be destabilised by the union. 
 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other committee members on oversight tour were, Mr Rasheed Makinde (Ifako Ijaye II), Mr Ganiyu Okanlawon (Kosofe I), Mr Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe II) and Mr Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo II)

A video production company, Oakfil Productions Limited, has dragged the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, before a Federal High Court in Lagos over the recent amendment of the broadcasting code.
In its deposition before the court, the company contended that the NBC lacks the statutory powers to make amendments or sign the NBC code.
Insisting that the recently reported amendment to the broadcasting code was an act of illegality, the company asked the court to compel NBC to comply with the procedure prescribed by the  National Broadcasting Commission Act in making amendments to the code.
It also wants the court to declare that NBC acted ultra vires improperly, in bad faith, and in gross abuse of the powers vested in it by the National Broadcasting Commission Act when it allowed its management to make the sixth edition of the National Broadcasting Code.

Amongst the company’s numerous prayers before the court is an order restraining the NBC from acting on the code or giving effect in any manner whatsoever to the said sixth edition of the National Broadcasting Code.
The NBC, in the new regulation, states that every broadcaster must license its broadcast and/or signal rights in any genre of programming to another broadcaster in Nigeria if the genre of programme enjoys compelling viewership by Nigerians, relates to a product or service that is objectively necessary to be able to compete effectively on a downstream market; or if it is likely to lead to the elimination of effective competition on the downstream markets.
The new subsidiary legislation also stipulates the imposition of a N10 million fine for operators who refuse to comply.
No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.

The Nigeria Army has confirmed the killing of Mr Terwase Akwaza, alias “Gana,” the ‘most wanted criminal’ in Benue state.
The Commander, 4 Special Forces Command, Doma, Nasarawa state, Maj. -Gen. Moundhey Ali, told newsmen on Tuesday that Gana was killed along Gbese-Gboko-Makurdi road following an exchange of gunfire.
The Benue State Government had in 2015 granted amnesty to over 500 persons including Gana, who were terrorising parts of Benue and Taraba states, but most of them relapsed into criminality.
Gana was later in 2017, declared wanted by the Police while the Benue placed a N10 million bounty on him.

Ali said, “About 12:00 hours on Tuesday, we received strategic information on the movement of the dreaded bandit Terwase Akwaza Agbadu AKA Gana along Gbese-Gboko-Makurdi road.
“Troops of Operation ‘Ayem Akpatuma III’ moved swiftly and mounted roadblocks along the routes.
“At about 13:00 hours, there was an engagement with the convoy of Gana, a shoot out ensued and the bandit was killed.”
The Commander also said that 40 armed members of Gana’s gang were captured during the operation.
He said the captured gang members were in Army custody and would be handed over to the appropriate authority for prosecution.
Ali also disclosed that several rifles, pump-action guns, ammunition, charms, and explosives among other items were recovered from the gang.
He said Gana’s corpse had been deposited in a hospital mortuary which he did not disclose.
