Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is unhappy at the move of the Nigerian Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, for Cyriel Dessers to pledge his allegiance to Nigeria.<br />
<br />
Dessers switched allegiance to Nigeria to play for the Eagles at senior level despite been eligible to play for Belgium last month.<br />
<br />
According to ESPN, a close source cited the case of Queens Park Rangers’ Eberechi Eze, who was approached by Pinnick and was well publicised in the media but the player refused to commit his future immediately to the Eagles.<br />
<br />
“There are very influential people who do not want him to switch allegiance. That is why it is important to handle these discussions discretely. (Eze) has a Premier League team looking at him, and a Championship team with promotion prospects also in the picture.<br />

<br />
“But this whole thing (photo with Pinnick) could compromise that.”<br />
<br />
“There are over 450 players on the database, of that number, 65 are foreign-born but eligible to play for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“All of them are being monitored and most of them we have spoken to. But the process requires diplomacy and constant communication, and the timing must be right.”<br />
<br />
“When we look at new players, we do it discreetly,” Rohr told ESPN when he was asked how long he had been monitoring the 25-year-old.<br />
<br />
The likes of Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi, Bryan Idowu, Joe Aribo, Josh Maja, Victor Solomon-Otabor and Maduka Okoye are players of Nigerian descent that have pledged allegiance to the country.<br />
<br />
Dessers is a proven goalscorer, as he scored 22 goals in 36 league games for NAC Breda back in 2015 to propel them to promotion, and then joined Utrecht, for whom he scored nine goals in 32 appearances and five in 15 last season before joining Heracles.<br />
<br />
This ongoing season, he has scored 13 goals in all competitions while also grabbing five assists for the Eredivise outfit.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, has condemned the killing of four aid workers by armed groups in Borno.<br />
<br />
Eve Sabbagh, the Head of Public Information, UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stated this in a statement on Saturday in Maiduguri.<br />
<br />
Kallon said the UN agency was sad by the killing of the aid workers by their captors on Dec. 13.<br />
<br />
He described the action as “tragic” and called for immediate release of aid workers still under captivity.<br />

<br />
“I am deeply saddened and outraged by the news of the tragic killing of four aid workers who were held captive by armed groups for almost five months.<br />
<br />
“My thoughts go to their families, friends and colleagues who are enduring unspeakable pain and hardship,” Kallon said.<br />
<br />
He explained that the four men were among the six aid workers abducted on July 26; when armed group attacked their convoy in Damasak of Mobbar Local Government Area.<br />
<br />
“They were working on a health project implemented by the Action Against Hunger, an International Non Governmental Organization (INGO).<br />
<br />
“One of the drivers was killed during the attack and another was reportedly executed on September 24.<br />
<br />
“I plead for the immediate release of Grace Taku, the only woman who was in the ACF team, and whose whereabouts remain unknown.<br />
<br />
“I also call for the immediate release of Alice Loksha, a nurse and a mother, who was abducted during an attack in Rann in March 2018,” he said.<br />
<br />
Kallon described the action as another sad day for the people of Nigeria and the humanitarian community.<br />
<br />
He noted that the aid workers devoted their lives to helping the most vulnerable communities in Borno, in spite of the risks.<br />
<br />
According to him, the UN and partners were working to provide vital assistance to over seven million people in the crisis-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.<br />
<br />
The coordinator, however, decried that humanitarian workers have increasingly become the target of violent attacks.<br />
<br />
He revealed that seven aid workers were killed this year while 26 others lost their lives in the conflict since 2011.<br />
<br />
Kallon added that: “Violence against humanitarian actors jeopardizes access to much needed assistance for people affected by the armed conflict.<br />
<br />
“I renew the call for all armed actors to respect the principles of humanity, neutrality, independence and impartiality which guide humanitarian assistance, and to ensure the protection of aid workers”.

President Muhammadu Buhari is saddened by the reported execution of four aid workers in the North-East by terrorists.<br />
<br />
The Presidency, in a statement on Saturday, said Buhari condemned the killings.<br />
<br />
However, the retired major general made reassurances of his regime defeating the terrorists.<br />
<br />
“The defeat of evil by good is inevitable, no matter the pyrrhic victory evildoers seem to win”, a part of the statement read.<br />
<br />
It added, “The President feels saddened by the claimed development, and commiserates with the family and loved ones of the aid workers, who had offered themselves to serve humanity at grave risks.<br />

<br />
“The aid workers had been abducted near Damasak, Borno State, in July, and had been held despite all efforts to secure their release, till their alleged execution.”<br />
<br />
It quoted the President in his own words, saying, “Evil will always be defeated by good at the end of the day.<br />
<br />
“Whatever seeming victory evil records, eventually rebounds on the evildoer. We are resolved to beat evil in this land, and we remain unrelenting till we achieve it.”<br />
<br />
Buhari called on all insurgents to quit terrorism.<br />
<br />
The statement was signed by his media aide, Mr Femi Adesina.

Mrs Muyinat Mimiko, the mother of the immediate past Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has passed away.<br />

It was gathered that she died after a brief illness at her residence in Ondo, at the age of 88.<br />
<br />
An aide of the former governor, Mr Paul Akinduro, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Saturday, said the octogenarian gave up the ghost on Friday night.<br />

A 29-year-old man, Boniface Nwoha, has been murdered by unknown gunmen at a drinking joint at Amika Abba area of Abakaliki.<br />
<br />
The Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State Police Command, Mrs Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abakaliki on Friday.<br />
<br />
She said full investigation into the murder had commenced and assured residents that the perpetrators of the crime would be arrested and brought to justice.<br />
<br />
Odah said, “The case has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation.<br />

“The police will unravel the cause of the murder and ensure that everyone involved in the act is arrested and prosecuted.<br />
<br />
“I wish to use this medium to appeal to citizens to be law abiding, to resist the lure of taking laws into their hands and report any breach of right to the police.<br />
<br />
“We assure our readiness to ensure full protection of lives of every resident and there will be no hiding place for criminal elements in the state.”<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, a source close to the deceased’s family told the News Agency of Nigeria, on condition of anonymity, that Nwoha was killed by members of a suspected rival cult group.<br />
<br />
According to the source, the group was on a reprisal mission, following a fracas that took place at the compound of the deceased, where some people were reportedly injured.<br />
<br />
“The deceased allegedly had an altercation with some co-tenants at their residence at Amike Abba, which led to some persons getting injured.<br />
<br />
“In an apparent reprisal attack, the injured persons, alleged to be members of the Aye confraternity, trailed him to a drinking joint, where they shot him severally and fled,” the source said.<br />
<br />
NAN gathered that many residents of the area, especially youths, had fled their homes, following ongoing police investigation.

The Bayelsa State government has expressed its readiness to give full account of its stewardship in the last eight years as part of the ongoing transition programme in the state.<br />
<br />
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, made the position of the government known on Friday during the monthly transparency briefing which held at the Conference Room, Ministry of Finance, Treasury Building, Yenagoa.<br />
<br />
He said the government deemed it fit to dedicate a period of the transition to reel out its achievements in all the sectors of the state since 2012.<br />
<br />
He said the one week programme tagged, ‘Stewardship’, would also provide an opportunity for the incoming administration to take off.<br />

Iworiso-Markson said that the programme would involve commissioners and heads of key parastatals and agencies taking turns to make their presentations in graphic details.<br />
<br />
He said that despite some challenges, the Restoration Government did not shy away from its agenda of providing a new lease of life for the people.<br />
<br />
He attributed the success of the government to the leadership style of Governor Dickson and his commitment to use public resources for the good of the people.<br />
<br />
He said: “Through the purposeful leadership of Governor Dickson, Bayelsa has been set on an unstoppable trajectory of growth and development that will continue to be seen in the coming years.<br />
<br />
“The Restoration Government has indeed been one that has instilled decency and accountability into the governance of the state as never seen before.<br />
<br />
“Bayelsans should expect proper accountability of our stewardship during the programme as every commissioner and heads of agencies will come before the people to present their scorecard.”

Former record label of Kizz Daniel, G-Worldwide Entertainment (GWW), has said that it will stop the concert of the artiste slated for December 26 at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.<br />

They disclosed this in Lagos on Friday through their lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).<br />
<br />
Addressing journalists, Agbakoba vowed they were going to pursue the case instituted against Kizz Daniel. He said the move was to restore “faith” in contractual agreements in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.<br />
<br />
“We represent one of the largest labels and we are very unhappy that one of our artistes, Kiss Daniel, has run away,” Agbakoba said.<br />

According to him, Kizz Daniel whose real name is Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe, breached ‘a mandatory buy-out clause’ and infringed on the intellectual property rights of GWW.<br />
<br />
Agbakoba said the ‘Woju’ crooner signed a seven year contract with G-Worldwide Entertainment on April 15, 2014. However, in November 2017, the artiste left the label and founded his own lable, Fly Boy Inc. In May 2018, he changed his name from Kiss Daniel to Kizz Daniel.<br />
<br />
The move prompted G-Worldwide to drag Kizz Daniel to court, asking for N500m as damages.<br />
<br />
“We, as legal advisers to some of the people in the business (entertainment), we are going to play a strong and active role to promote the industry,” Agabkoba said.<br />
<br />
“What we’re trying to do with this press conference is to call attention to the fact that this nonsense that our artistes or labels, can do what they like, will have to stop. And Kizz Daniel represents the living example  of how the rules of the industry are not being followed.”<br />
<br />
Agbakoba added that they were going to file a case to stop Kizz Daniel’s show, ‘Kizz Daniel Live In Concert’, slated for Boxing Day at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos.<br />
<br />
“We’re going to apply for an injunction to stop the show because he is tied to us. And the matter is in court and the court has to decide.”<br />
<br />
Agbakoba also warned third-parties to stay away from Kizz Daniel, citing that he is still legally bound to the contract he signed with GWW.<br />
<br />
“It would not be in their interest to touch him until the court resolves the case,” he said.<br />
<br />
“We are warning all third party people to stay away and let the court give its judgement, one way or the other.”<br />
<br />
Agbakoba however, noted that his client is ready for out-of-court settlement.

Reacting to reports that his smoking habits contributed to his sickness, Kasumu said people were just ‘talking rubbish’.<br />
<br />
A son of the actor, Bode Odumosu, also spoke on his father’ health status. He reiterated that his father needs prayers, not financial aid.<br />
<br />
“I am his second son and we (his children) have been taking care of him. We didn’t reach out to anyone. People only became alarmed about Pa Kasumu’s condition after a video of him at Foluke Daramola’s event went viral,” he said.<br />
<br />
In 2017, it had been reported that Pa Kasumu’s health worsened after he got back from a medical trip to India.<br />
<br />
Although he was required to return to India two months after the initial trip, the sudden loss of his passport had prevented him from doing so.<br />

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has raised an alarm over the increasing number of drug addiction in the country.<br />

He explained that school administrators and parents must be proactive in order to curb the menace.<br />
<br />
Speaking at a 2-day National Summit on Menace of Drugs and Substances Abuse among the youth, the minister, who was represented by the Medical Director Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, Professor Abdulkareem Jika Yusuf said Nigeria is estimated to have about 14.4per cent or 14.3 million people aged between 15 and 64 years who used drugs like cannabis, amphetamines, opioids, and cocaine at least once in the reporting 12-month period.<br />
<br />
The minister explained, “The burden of drug-attributable diseases account for about 1.5 per cent of the global burden of disease, and around 9 per cent of the People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in Nigeria reported living with HIV.<br />

“Parents, especially mothers and school authorities have fundamental roles to play, they must create time and seize opportunities to shape children under their watch, to be the kind of youths and adults they would want them to be.<br />
<br />
“The harsh economic realities of our time cannot be an excuse for not accomplishing the divine responsibilities bestowed on us as parents or guidance in the form of school administrators.”<br />
<br />
Commending Katsina Government for enacting an edict on responsible parenting/almajiri right protection edict, the minister revealed, “a worthy effort is that of the government of Katsina state, who recently enacted the edict, ‘Responsible Parenting/ Almajiri Right Protection Edict’. This is worthy of emulation and it is important for all the states of the Federation to adopt and adapt these edicts.<br />
<br />
“Clearly, all tiers of government are doing quite a lot to stem the menace of drug abuse in our society, but while the society bears the brunt of the consequences of drug use, the family comes off the worst, considering the stigma and the negative economic impact inherent with drug use and addiction.”

On the day the House Judiciary Committee approved impeachment articles against him, President Donald Trump claimed it is strengthening him politically. And with those articles headed to the House floor next week, he appears to be warming to a quick election-year Senate trial.<br />

In brief but animated remarks, the president defiantly declared of the shape and length of an expected Senate trial, “I’ll do whatever I want.”<br />
<br />

The remark could have been a message to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans who favor a short trial with no GOP-White House witnesses; Trump favors the opposite.<br />
<br />
But just as quickly, the president appeared to defer to McConnell, adding: “I’ll do whatever they want to do.”<br />
<br />
A couple hours after the House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to send two impeachment articles – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – to the full chamber, the president called the panel’s action “a very sad thing for our country.”<br />
<br />
But he cast the probe in political terms, contending Democrats might have hurt their chances at defeating him next year and winning other races.<br />
<br />
“But it seems to be very good for me politically,” he said.<br />
<br />
Before Speaker Nancy Pelosi moved ahead with the impeachment inquiry in September, polls mostly showed Americans favoring the president’s impeachment. Since the probe began, public opinion has mostly leveled.<br />
<br />
A Monmouth University poll released this week, for instance, found 45 per cent of Americans want Trump impeached and moved out of his job. Despite public hearings in recent weeks, that is only 1 percentage point higher than the same poll found in the two previous months.<br />
<br />
An average of polls compiled by FiveThirtyEight found a relatively stable level of opinion about impeachment, with less than half of Americans favoring the House making Trump only the third sitting president to be impeached.<br />
<br />
The president also took a shot at Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a National Security Council Ukraine expert who testified during the impeachment probe and raised concerns about an American president asking another government to investigate US citizens.<br />
<br />
“The ‘lieutenant colonel,’” Trump said, bringing up Vindman Friday without being prompted. “He’s another beauty.”<br />
<br />
The president also repeatedly slammed Democrats, saying they have misused impeachment, calling it “something that shouldn’t be allowed,” adding: “I’ll tell you what, some day there will be a Democratic president and a Republican House.”<br />
<br />
Under such a scenario, he said he suspects his fellow Republicans will “remember that,” referring to his expected impeachment.<br />
<br />
In a lighter moment, Trump – who agreed to a still-murky “phase one” trade pact with China as Republican and Democratic lawmakers claimed to have struck a spending deal – noted, “This has been a wild week.”<br />
<br />
Next week likely will only be wilder.<br />
<br />
The House is slated to take up that year-end spending package on Tuesday that is needed to avert a government shutdown next week. The impeachment articles are expected on the floor Wednesday, followed by his proposed U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact on Thursday.<br />

The National Youth Service Corps has pledged to work with security agents to rescue a corps member, Abraham Amuta, who was abducted in Borno State by the Boko Haram insurgents seven months ago.<br />

Director-General of NYSC, Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, gave this assurance on Thursday when he visited the family of the corps member in Jos, Plateau State.<br />
<br />
Abraham was deployed to Maiduguri, Borno State for his service year but was abducted by the Boko Haram in the third week of April 2019 when he reportedly went out for evangelism with a pastor from his church.<br />

Ibrahim told the corps member’s parents, Daniel and Esther Amuta, that the NYSC management was “fully committed to the rescue of Abraham.”<br />
<br />
He said, “The scheme is working with relevant agencies to ensure that he is released unhurt and reunited with the family. We express hope in his eventual rescue and we assure the family that the scheme will continue to stand by you.”<br />
<br />
In another development, the DG visited another corps member, Nuraddeen Tahir, who lost his arm in a road accident after leaving the orientation camp in Taraba State.<br />
<br />
The director-general went to the corps member’s residence in the Gwarzo area of Kano State, noting that the scheme would give “all the necessary support to the corps member to live a normal life.”<br />
<br />
“Arrangements have been concluded to provide prosthetic limbs for Nuraddeen to enable him to perform his daily activities seamlessly. The welfare of our members remains one of the priorities of this administration,” he said.<br />
<br />
Tahir, a graduate of North-West University in Kano, was involved in a road accident with other corps members while traveling to the Sardauna Local Government Area, where they were posted for their primary assignments.<br />
<br />
He was thereafter redeployed to Kano State for proper monitoring after he was discharged from the hospital.

Ex-President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi-Okogie, has said Nigeria is gradually returning to the era of military dictatorship where there is disobedience to the rule of law.<br />
<br />
Okogie, a former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, decried the frequent disobedience to court orders by the regime led by the President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />

Okogie’s comments are contained in a statement he sent to newsmen on Friday titled, ‘Corruption and Repression.’<br />
<br />
He said, “The painful and sad reality we face is that we live in a country where leaders are very distant from the led. We need leaders who are neither blind to the suffering of the people nor deaf to their cries; leaders who listen to the people, leaders who have the courage to be humble, and who are therefore ready to admit that they are wrong when they are wrong.<br />
<br />
“In a democracy, those who govern are chosen by the people to represent the people. And if they are to represent the people, they must listen to the people. Not only do true democrats listen, they also are not afraid of dissenting opinions. They do not arrogate to themselves the power to accuse, arrest, prosecute and convict. But can we candidly say we have democrats at the helm of affairs in this country at this point in time?<br />
<br />
“How can we claim to live in a democracy when presidential spokespersons tell us the presidency is always right? It is important to remind our political leaders at the federal, state and local levels of government that they cannot enforce laws if they cannot obey the law.”<br />
<br />
He added, “If the executive disobeys court rulings, and if it intimidates and humiliates the judiciary, then we are back to the era when a military junta made laws and interpreted them without any regard for fundamental human rights. We have returned to a sinful past when citizens could be abducted and locked up in detention without trial under the pretext of acting in the interest of national security.”<br />
<br />
According to the retired bishop, repression of dissenting opinions was a major factor that led to the end of the First Republic.<br />
<br />
“But Nigerians do not want military rule anymore. Having experienced two painful bouts of military dictatorship, two periods in Nigeria’s history when men in uniform, trained and paid to protect the land and its people, visited untold brutality on the civilian population, we all must resolve to be responsible for protecting democracy in this country,” he stated.<br />
<br />
The Cardinal also recalled that it was during the military rule that Nigeria was plunged into an avoidable civil war. He said the war could have been avoided if political actors had adhered faithfully to democratic principles.<br />
<br />
He added that their failure to do so provided opportunistic elements in the Nigerian military with an excuse for mass murder.<br />
<br />
“Innocent lives were lost before and during that war. A month to the 50th anniversary of the end of that war, factors that led to the war are being reawakened. Our democracy is in danger because of corruption and dictatorship,” he said.

The immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, has been barred from travelling out of the country by the President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
The move may be part of a fresh probe into Onnoghen’s affairs. Onnoghen was convicted for not declaring his assets by the Code of Conduct Tribunal in April.<br />

An internal report issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service, which was read out to our correspondent by a top officer, stated that Onnoghen, his wife and daughter were attempting to travel to Accra, Ghana when they were accosted by immigration officers.<br />

The report stated, “On November 11, 2019, retired Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, was attempting to travel to Accra, Ghana. He was in company with his wife, Nkoyo, and daughter.<br />
<br />
“His passport, with number A50445233, was flagged because Justice Onnoghen’s name was on the watch list. The passport is currently in custody of the NIS.”<br />
<br />
The senior officer revealed that the passport seized from Onnoghen was not a diplomatic passport but the ordinary green passport.<br />
<br />
The immigration officer told our correspondent that the directive to seize Onnoghen’s passport came from the Presidency.<br />
<br />
“Justice Onnoghen will have to meet with the Presidency to know why his passport was seized. We are only following instructions,” the officer said.<br />
<br />
It was gathered from a top judicial officer that Onnoghen’s decision to challenge his conviction by the CCT might have angered the President Muhammadu Buhari's government,<br />
<br />
The Appeal Court had condemned the Buhari regime for the manner in which the trial of Onnoghen was conducted.<br />
<br />
In a judgment by the three-man bench led by Justice Stephen Adah, it was unanimously ruled that the CCT’s ex parte order breached the ex-CJN’s right to a fair hearing.<br />
<br />
While reading the lead judgment, Justice Adah stated that the proceedings of the CCT shouldn’t have been conducted “in a shady or clandestine manoeuvre” the way the ex parte order was obtained by the prosecution.<br />
<br />
However, the court said it could not upturn Onnoghen’s conviction since the trial had already taken place.<br />
<br />
A source said, “Even though the NJC (National Judicial Council) recommended that Onnoghen should be paid his benefits in full, I can tell you that he has not been paid anything and all his allowances have stopped.<br />
<br />
“His accounts remain frozen. It was some judges who even contributed money for him recently for medicals expenses.<br />
<br />
“I was told that his ordeal might be connected with his decision to challenge his conviction at the Court of Appeal which the government of the day might have found embarrassing because the Court of Appeal accused them of depriving Onnoghen of a fair hearing.”<br />
<br />
Onnoghen, who was CJN from March 1, 2017 to April 5, 2019, was suspended by Buhari in January, a few weeks to the presidential election, on allegations that he failed to declare five bank accounts in his asset declaration form at the Code of Conduct Bureau.<br />
<br />
Buhari hinged his decision to suspend Onnoghen on an ex parte order by the CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar.<br />
<br />
Onnoghen’s many attempts to stop his trial were futile.<br />
<br />
He also faced a mini-trial at the NJC where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission presented evidence against him.<br />
<br />
The NJC subsequently recommended his retirement with full benefits and Onnoghen immediately complied and tendered his resignation before Buhari on April 5.<br />
<br />
However, his resignation letter was not acknowledged by the buhari regime until his conviction by the CCT on May 28.<br />
<br />
The CCT ordered Onnoghen’s sacking and barred him from holding public office for 10 years.<br />
<br />
It also ordered that the sums of money in different currencies found in his Standard Chartered Bank accounts, a total of N46m, be forfeited to the Buhari regime.<br />
<br />
It was reported by an online news outlet, The Cable, that a retired CJN is entitled to cash and other perks worth N2.5bn.<br />
<br />
As part of the package for a retired chief justice, a house will be built for him in Abuja with a nine-digit sum for furnishing — in addition to a severance gratuity that is 300 per cent of his annual basic salary of N3,363,972.50, as well as pension for life.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack on an army camp in Niger which left 71 military personnel dead, the SITE intelligence group said Thursday.<br />

Hundreds of jihadists attacked the camp, near the border with Mali with shells and mortars on Tuesday, killing 71, injuring 122 and leaving “others missing,” according to the defence ministry.<br />
<br />
The attack in Inates in the western Tillaberi region was the deadliest on Niger’s military since Islamist militant violence began to spill over from neighbouring Mali in 2015.<br />
<br />
“The Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) claimed credit for the deadly raid on the Inates military base in Niger,” SITE, which monitors jihadist media, said in a statement Thursday. It added that ISWAP claimed it had killed “over a hundred soldiers”.<br />

Three Nigerien soldiers and 14 militants were also killed on Monday in an attack on another army post in Agando in the western Tahoua region, the defence ministry said.<br />
<br />
Heavily armed “terrorists” in a dozen 4×4 vehicles led the attack early Monday morning on the military post in Tahoua, the ministry statement said.<br />
<br />
The Inates attack was carried out by “heavily armed terrorists estimated to number many hundreds”, the defence ministry said Wednesday, adding that “a substantial number of terrorists were neutralised”.<br />
<br />
The fighting lasted three hours, combining shelling and artillery fire with “the use of kamikaze vehicles by the enemy”.<br />
<br />
“Clashes took place with light, medium, and heavy weapons, which led to killing at least 100 elements and wounding dozens, and burning barracks inside the base,” the ISWAP statement claimed, according to a translation by SITE.<br />
<br />
“The mujahideen took control over it for a few hours, and captured weapons and ammunition, 16 vehicles, and multiple tanks as spoils,” ISWAP said, referring to its fighters.<br />
<br />
The attack dealt a blow to efforts to roll back jihadism in the Sahel.<br />
<br />
Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou raced back in the night from a security and development conference in Egypt to chair a meeting of the National Security Council in Niamey. Three days of national mourning were declared.<br />
<br />
Militant violence has spread across the vast Sahel region, especially in Burkina Faso and Niger, after it began when armed Islamists revolted in northern Mali in 2012.<br />
<br />
In the last four months, more than 230 soldiers in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have died, in addition to 13 French troops killed in a helicopter collision while hunting jihadists in northern Mali.<br />
<br />
That is in addition to the thousands of civilians who have died and more than a million who have been displaced since the jihadist revolt began in Mali.<br />
<br />
Analysts note an escalation in the jihadists’ operational tactics, which seem to have become bolder and more complex.<br />
<br />
Instead of hit-and-run raids by a small group of Kalashnikov-armed guerrillas, the jihadists are now carrying out operations that involve hundreds of fighters, armed with mortars and suicide attack vehicles.<br />
<br />
Ranged against them are the impoverished armies of Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, plus the 4,500-man French force in the Sahel and the 13,000-man UN force in Mali, MINUSMA.<br />
<br />
Tuesday’s attack prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to postpone a meeting scheduled for next week in the southwestern French town of Pau, where he and five presidents from the Sahel were due to discuss security in the region.<br />
<br />
The meeting will now take place early next year.<br />
<br />
Niger is part of a five-nation anti-jihadist task force known as the G5, set up in 2014 with Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania and Chad.

Some aggrieved policemen deployed in Kogi State from the Ekiti State Police Command for the conduct of the November 16 governorship election on Thursday protested alleged refusal of the authorities to pay their allowances.<br />
<br />
The two hundred and twenty-five policemen said their details were allegedly removed from the list of those that were due for payment despite risking their lives to ensure security during the poll.<br />
<br />
They lamented that the police authorities have refused to pay them a month after the election, while others have received theirs, which gave room for suspicion that the fund must have allegedly been embezzled by some high ranking police officers at the state or zonal level.<br />
<br />
The angry police officers, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, appealed to Inspector General of Police Mr. Mohammed Adamu to investigate the cause of the delay.<br />

The sources said N90,000 was paid to senior officers above Sergeant rank, while their men within the rank and file got N40,000, showing that most of the victims were the lower cadre policemen.<br />

A statement posted on the commission’s website by its spokesperson, Rasheedat Okoduwa, on Thursday, said Mohammed was wanted for failure to appear before the ICPC in an ongoing investigation against him.<br />

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has warned that disobedience to any court order is a recipe for lawlessness and chaos.<br />

In a veiled reference to the arrest of the #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, by the Department of State Services in violation of a court order, Abubakar stated that “everyone must be law-abiding in the interest of national development.”<br />

He gave the warning on Thursday in Abuja at the 2019 fourth quarter meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council with the theme, ‘Religion and civil authorities in dialogue for nation-building.’<br />

The monarch said, “We must regularly obey and respect the laws of our land. We should never disregard the laws to avoid the consequences. If a court makes a judicial pronouncement on a particular matter, it should be obeyed to the letter.<br />

“There’s no society that will prosper through lawlessness; citizens must be law-abiding so that we can achieve the desired development,” Abubakar said.<br />

Democrats set a vote on impeachment charges against President Donald Trump for Friday morning after a frequently caustic 14-hour debate with Republicans over the US leader’s alleged misconduct in seeking political support from Ukraine.<br />

In a shock late-night end to a marathon hearing of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, Chairman Jerry Nadler abruptly postponed a final vote on the two articles of impeachment, saying he wanted to give committee members time to “search their conscience” over the evidence presented against the US leader.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>Surprised Republicans bitterly accused Nadler of running a “kangaroo court,” but Democrat Jamie Raskin said they did not want to be accused of taking such a momentous action against the president in the dead of night.<br />
<br />
“We wanted to do it in broad daylight so everybody can see exactly what’s going on,” he told CNN after the debate.<br />
<br />
– Debate underscores national divide – The move came after 14 hours of argument broadcast live which served to underscore the deep political divide of the country.<br />
<br />
Republicans sought one after another to shoot down allegations that Trump violated his oath of office in pressuring Ukraine to help him against his Democratic rivals, particularly former vice president Joe Biden, who could face Trump in next year’s presidential election.<br />
<br />
They accused Democrats of failing to produce evidence and of acting on strictly political motives and “hate” for Trump. And they sought to turn the debate into a hearing on Biden’s son, who had served on the board of a Ukraine energy company.<br />
<br />
“You can’t beat him in an election, you’re not going to beat him in a reelection, so now you have set up impeachment,” said Republican Congressman Andy Biggs.<br />
<br />
“At the end of the day, you don’t have the facts for your case,” declared Guy Reschenthaler.<br />
<br />
But Democrats each time returned the focus to Trump’s own behavior and a large body of testimony which they said proved he gravely violated the US Constitution and continues to threaten the integrity of the 2020 elections.<br />
<br />
“There is plenty of evidence of the president’s wrongdoing,” said Democratic Representative Mary Gay Scanlon.<br />
<br />
“I don’t know what more you can ask for here. You’ve got admissions from the president, you’ve got corroboration from people he’s appointed. The only thing you can do is stick your head in the sand if you are not willing to see what has happened here,” she said.<br />
<br />
“By abusing his power, he endangered our elections and our national security. He remains an ongoing threat on both. …he’s threatening to do it again.”<br />
<br />
– Result not in doubt – Nadler scheduled a vote on the two impeachment articles against Trump, abuse of power and obstruction of justice, for 10 AM (1500 GMT) Friday.<br />
<br />
The result is not in doubt: Democrats hold a strong majority on the committee, and are expected to vote unanimously to pass them, while Republicans will stick together in opposition.<br />
<br />
The articles will then be sent to the entire House for a final vote Wednesday.<br />
<br />
Should the Democratic-majority chamber vote against Trump as predicted, he will become only the third US president to be impeached and placed on trial in the Senate.<br />
<br />
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed concerns that a handful of moderate Democrats could defect and oppose impeachment, in part because they fear voters will turn against them in the November 2020 election.<br />
<br />
“People will vote the way they vote,” she said.<br />
<br />
In the Judiciary Committee debate, which officially began Wednesday night, Republicans would not budge in their support of Trump, refusing to accept any of the allegations of wrongdoing.<br />
<br />
Instead, they accused Democrats of rushing the investigation and other procedural issues.<br />
<br />
“They’re all afraid that they can’t beat him at the ballot box, so they’re going to do this rigged, rushed and wrong impeachment process,” said Republican Jim Jordan.<br />

But Democrats said they were moving quickly because Trump unchecked would continue to flout election laws.<br />
<br />
They noted that his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who was deeply involved in pressuring Ukraine, was back in Kiev last weekend seeking dirt on Biden.<br />

Trump has signalled to aides that he wants a full-throated defense in the Senate, with witnesses testifying live.<br />

The Minister of State for Health, Senator Adeleke Mamora, has said that Nigeria has the highest number of babies infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, adding that the Federal Government would therefore sustain HIV prevention and treatment activities nationwide.<br />

The minister noted that the government would commit “sufficient resources to both HIV prevention and treatment in order to stay on track to end the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome by 2030.<br />

Mamora stated these in Abuja on Thursday at the launching of the Faith-based Action for Scaling up of Testing and Treatment for Epidemic Response project in Nigeria.<br />

The minister said, “Over the years, the government has put in place several response mechanisms towards reducing the burden of HIV and AIDS in the country, as evidenced by the reduction in the HIV prevalence from the 3.1 per cent to 1.4 in the last survey.<br />
<br />
“It has been discovered that majority of children infected with the HIV are living in sub-Saharan Africa with Nigeria having more HIV infected babies than anywhere else in the world. HIV prevention and treatment activities must therefore be sustained and the momentum increased if the country and the world at large are to stay on track to end AIDS by 2030.<br />
<br />
“This launch of the Catholic Relief Services’ FASTER project is at the right time to bridge the identified gaps, especially in pediatric HIV diagnosis and treatment. The six priority actions of the project are as follows; streamline regulatory approval, integrate service delivery, expand diagnostic platforms, evaluate and expand on novel HIV testing approaches, implement validated HIV risk screening checklist and optimise paediatric Anti-Retroviral Therapy.”<br />
<br />
The project director in Nigeria, Dr Emeka Anoje, said the programme being implemented in the seven states of Rivers, Benue, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.<br />
<br />
“The project is designed to accelerate progress in pediatric HIV diagnosis and treatment in countries that have high unmet need for child and adolescent antiretroviral therapy. These countries include Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia,” Anoje added.

The United States of America has filed three counts, bordering on bank and wire fraud and “aggravated identity theft” against Oladayo Oladokun, Farouk Kukoyi and Baldwin Osuji, before the United States’ Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger.<br />

The three Nigerians were charged alongside 12 others.<br />
<br />
In the charge, the defendants were alleged to have “wilfully and knowingly did combine, conspire, confederate and agree together and with each other to commit bank fraud in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1344, and wire fraud, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1343.”<br />

The alleged crime was said to have been committed between April 2018 and September 2019.<br />
<br />
The prosecution said, “The defendants participated in a bank and wire fraud scheme involving three key phases.<br />
<br />
“First, members of the conspiracy fraudulently opened more than 60 business bank accounts at national banks. The accounts were typically in the names of corporate entities. To open the accounts, members of the conspiracy presented real personal identifying information, including names and social security numbers, of other people.<br />
<br />
“Second, members of the conspiracy deposited into the accounts fraud money that they typically obtained from victims in one of two ways – in some instances, members of the conspiracy deposited stolen or forged cheques; in other instances, members of the conspiracy fraudulently obtained wire and automated clearinghouse transfers.<br />
<br />
“Third, members of the conspiracy accessed the fraud proceeds by transferring them into other accounts or by withdrawing cash.<br />
<br />
“To date, law enforcement has identified more than 100 fraudulent transactions in furtherance of the conspiracy, totaling more than $18m.”

The Senate on Thursday mandated its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to investigate the recent alleged invasion of court by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) to rearrest the publisher of Saharareporters and convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore.<br />

This resolution followed a point of order moved by the Senator representing Ekiti Central, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.<br />

Senator Bamidele coming under order 43 of the Senate Standing Rules, drew the attention of the upper chamber to the alleged invasion of a Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu.<br />
<br />
He said that the Senate cannot afford to gloss over the matter as direct representatives of the people.<br />

A Nigerian man identified as Chukwuma Anthony Ezeh, on Wednesday, December 11th slumped and died at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. <br />

An official source at the MMIA arrival terminal said the passenger on arrival from China, slumped and died while waiting to collect his luggage. Ezeh, according to information on his passport, was 47 years old.<br />

A spokesperson for the police, MMIA Command, DSP Joseph Alabi, who confirmed the incident said the passenger came on Ethiopian Airline. <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">In Every situation you find urself prayer is the only Key!! l was arrested on october 18 2019 by Efcc not interpol or Fbi, No interpol or Fbi is looking for me cos i dont knw where all these stories are coming from and the order of my arrest came from one of their head in lagos because he has my travel details, which i asked what was my offence but he told me till u get to lagos when i got to lagos on october 19 2019 he showed me my bank statement and ask me about the funds which came to my account btw 2015 to 2017 which i defended all. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">To my greatest suprise the next thing they did was to post that i was involve in internet fraud, BEC, cyber fraud and also 51 bank accounts which such never happened and it went viral worldwide what kind of country are we in nothing like investigation they tried to tarnish my image but God pass them, I was in their custody for 40days which no evidence of fraud was found on me After my lawyer sued Them for keeping me for Long on 22nd of November they gave me my charge sheet for 14 counts on money laundering 😳 on a Legit Business i did wit a mobile company in nigeria Now i knw its a crime to be a nigerian, I was shock when i came out to see people calling me different names like fraudster, Criminal, Yahoo boy which i have never defraud anyone or steal from anyone also no petition on me or any one or company reported me , They did this to me because of Hate, Enviness, Jealousy... </div>

Cristiano Ronaldo reacted furiously at a pitch invader who grabbed him by the neck following Juventus 2 - 0 win against Bayern Leverkusen on Wednesday night (Dec. 11) in Germany.<br />

At the final whistle of the game in Germany, the overzealous fan approached him from behind and grabbed his neck as he tried to take a selfie with the superstar footballer.<br />

A high court sitting in Yola, presided by Justice Nathan Musa on Thursday jailed two Independent National Electoral Commission staff for 42 years for collecting bribes.<br />

Justice Musa also asked the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the International Police to produce former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke, to face prosecution over the N362 million she sent to the two convicted INEC staff in order to compromise the 2015 presidential election in Adamawa State.<br />
<br />
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had brought the case against Ibrahim Mohammed Umar, Sahabo Iya Hamman, both staff of INEC as well as the former Minister of Petroleum for conspiring to defraud the federal government with the intent to compromise the 2015 general elections.<br />
<br />
Musa said the court delivered the verdict after due diligence established a conspiracy between the persons, as such he convicted and sentenced the two INEC staff to seven years each on the three counts brought against them by the EFCC.<br />

The judge said he was giving a lenient sentence since the accused were first-term offenders adding that the sentence would run concurrently.<br />
<br />
“The offence has a mandatory provision. I’m constrained by the law. They shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment without the option of fine.<br />

"However in view of plea to temper justice with mercy, I will allow the sentence to run concurrently,” he said.
