We made a mistake last week (at West Ham). They have simply announced their exit from the governance. I think it is important that we acknowledge there is a political class that needs to fade away from our country because the idea that the will of the people to be subjected to the whims and caprices of our politicians should be a total anomaly.<br /> <br /> “Today as we focus on the competitive ideas that will develop country if the two dominant parties cared about our people, they would come here to contest ideas on how they will fix Nigeria.”<br /> <br /> Durotoye, who spoke next, said the APC and the PDP are two sides of the same coin and asked Nigerians to ensure that the two parties never get into power again.<br /> <br /> “This shows that the future is here and old things have passed away. I must say to Nigerians that pride always comes before a fall and every time you feel you don’t need to tell Nigerians what you want to do, it means that you are not there to serve them in the first place but you’re there to rule them.<br /> <br /> “We have had 20 years of rulership and rulers do not explain to their subjects what they are going to do. They don’t owe it to them.”<br /> <br /> Also speaking, Moghalu said the two men lacked the ability to answer questions properly.<br /> <br /> He said, “I am not surprised that the candidates of the APC and the PDP have decided to turn their backs on Nigerians and say the people never meant much in their eyes.<br /> <br /> “The reason they are not here are first, arrogance because they believe the people of Nigeria have no voice and no choice and that you will always come back to them. They believe they have trapped you and we believe it is time to send them a message.<br /> <br /> “The second reason they are not here is because they cannot answer the questions. It is very simple. They belong to the old recycled politicians that want to return to power with a sense of entitlement but not a record of performance.”

That standard of openness must start long before election day.<br /> <br /> “It is for this reason that the Nigerian Election Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria are organising a vice presidential debate on December 14, 2018 and a presidential debate on January 19, 2019.<br /> <br /> In justifying the debates, Momoh said it was a well-known fact that Nigeria, in spite of its numerous potentials, was faced with a social crisis that began way back to the military era; but which has transcended democratic rule since the Army returned to the barracks.<br /> <br /> He said the nation today was experiencing a health care crisis that threatens women and children, an education crisis that threatens children’s future, a power crisis that is crippling every aspect of economic lives, and a more fundamental crisis of corruption, accountability and security.<br /> <br /> The Presidency did not confirm if Buhari will attend the debate. You can recall that a few weeks ago, I did issue a statement advising the US Government not to issue a visa to Atiku.<br /> <br /> “Remember also that in that same press conference, I also stated that it remained the prerogative of the US government to issue visa to anyone it deemed fit.<br /> <br /> “Let me say right away that we are not perturbed one bit that Alhaji Atiku Abukakar was able to secure a visa to the US. As a matter of fact, he can go ahead and get the US Green Card; that will not save him from imminent defeat in the forthcoming election.<br /> <br /> He added, “I want to remind Abubakar that the elections will be right here in Nigeria and not in the US. In any event, any time Abubakar returns home, he has questions to answer following the fresh evidence that we have that he benefited from slush funds that led to the collapse of former Bank PHB.<br /> <br /> “The document we have shows he benefited to the tune of N156m from that slush fund.<br /> <br /> “The paper which we have here started from an internal memo on January 13, 2009, which reads, ‘Please refer for discussion, your requested overdraft in favour of Atiku Abubakar for N156m and deliver same to me.<br /> <br /> “Please note that it must be delivered today (January 13) on the same date.’’’<br /> <br /> The minister stated that there was a second memo, which confirmed the receipt of the money requested.<br /> <br /> He quoted from the second memo, which reads, “Please confirm that the amount stated below be issued from Claremont Management Services account.”<br /> <br /> He said, “And we have evidence here of the account mandate, the name of Atiku Abubakar; we also have a copy of the cheque in which the sum of N156m was issued to Atiku Abubakar, dated January 13, 2009.<br /> <br /> “And of course, we also have a statement of account within that period that confirms that this sum was actually paid into his account.<br /> <br /> “These are fresh evidence as to his involvement in the collapse of Bank PHB. So, we want him to stay as long as he wants in the US, but as soon as he comes back, he has to explain to the electorate and to Nigerians what his role was in the collapse of the former Bank PHB.”<br /> <br /> Mohammed, however, observed that the visa the US gave to Abubakar was an indirect endorsement of Abubakar for the February 16 polls by the US government.<br /> <b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b><b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Allegation of corruption by FG is cock and bull story -Atiku</u></span></b><br /> <br /> In his reaction, Atiku mocked the Federal Government for failing to stop the United States government from granting him visa, saying with or without a trip to the US, the PDP would dislodge the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress at next month’s election.<br /> <br /> The former vice-president also dismissed as cock and bull story, the allegation by Lai Mohammed that he had a case to answer over the collapse of Bank PHB (Platinum Habib Bank).<br /> <br /> In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, said the Federal Government should bury its head in shame having failed to stop him from travelling to the US.<br /> <br /> He said it was shameful that the governing APC took it upon itself to call on the authorities of another country not to grant a private citizen entry visa, which ordinarily should not be its business.<br /> <br /> Atiku who arrived in the US on Thursday said the APC was jittery knowing that its government had failed.<br /> <br /> He stressed that Buhari’s days as President of Nigeria were numbered, adding that members of the ruling party had been running from pillar to post.<br /> <br /> Atiku challenged the Federal Government to either prove his alleged corrupt activities or forever remain quiet.<br /> <br /> He said, “It is disgusting to continue to spin allegations of corruption against me by people who have failed to come forward with a single shred of evidence of my misconduct while in office.<br /> <br /> “Isn’t it a shame that the ruling party, which National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, only on Thursday gave official confirmation to the general belief that even if Lawrence Anini becomes an APC member today, Buhari will forgive and consecrate him, can turn around to accuse me of corruption today?<br /> <br /> “They just suddenly woke up to the reality that their lies about Atiku being corrupt can no longer hold?”<br /> <br /> he had added, “I challenge the Federal Government to come up with evidence that I benefitted from N156m slush funds through Claremont Management Services Account on 13th January, 2009 as well as the collapse of Bank PHB as they have alleged.<br /> <br /> “It is instructive to note that the same Bank PHB is now Keystone Bank, which was said to have been acquired by Buhari’s cronies through AMCON last year.”

Others are Niger Delta Peoples Fighters, Bakassi Freedom Fighters, Niger Delta Movement for Justice and Niger Delta Fighters Network.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The Convener of the coalition group, John Duku, said, “We have sensitised our members and affiliates on how and who to vote, come February 16, 2019. I also want to assure you that our men would be on the ground in all the polling units across the Niger Delta region.<br /> <br /> “If we notice any attempt to rig election by anyone, including the security agents, it shall be bloody. Let people vote (according to) their conscience and let the vote of the people count.’’<br /> <br /> The coalition further said, “We want to assure you that President Buhari will not return in 2019 except INEC compromises election results. Buhari has neglected the Niger Delta people to the extent that we would have reacted in a very negative way if not for our elders and leaders who continuously calmed us down.<br /> <br /> “Our brother, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, accepted defeat and handed over to Buhari; I implore Buhari to toe the path of honour and do same.”<br /> <br /> Also, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, a group headed by Chief Edwin Clarke, declared that it had begun an alliance with other regions on the need to ensure that only presidential candidates, who are in support of restructuring, would get the people’s votes.<br /> <br /> PANDEF Secretary General, Dr. Alfred Mulade, told Saturday PUNCH in a telephone interview on Thursday that since President Buhari was not in support of restructuring, he would not enjoy the votes of the Niger Delta people.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, President Buhari and Atiku had reportedly split the Niger Delta militants, causing them to speak in discordant tunes over who the people of the region should support in next month’s presidential election.

That way, no one will have the opportunity to appropriate such assets.’<br /> <br /> The President assured that the government would not be cowed to abandon the corruption war.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “The anti-corruption fight is difficult in the current democratic dispensation, but we will continue to work carefully and steadily until we insulate public funds from looters.”<br /> <br /> He said that the administration has recorded tremendous success in the war against insurgency, restiveness in the Niger Delta and other crimes and would not rest until peace is restored to all parts of the country.<br /> <br /> “I have nothing to say than to remind you of the situation we met this country and the promises we made to you.<br /> <br /> “So the best we can do for our country is to return the APC to power.<br /> <br /> “The biggest gift we can give to our country is security and sufficiency and economic prosperity, ” he said.<br /> <br /> Buhari assured Nigerians that the nation’s economy “is recovering and is on track of development.<br /> <br /> “The larger population of the country are youth between the ages of 35 and below, Nigeria has lots of work to do to get you employment and sufficiency. We are determined to do that.”<br /> <br /> According to him, the government has also recorded massive success in the area of agriculture and commended the support of all governors, especially those of Lagos, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kano and Jigawa states for the turnaround in rice production.<br /> <br /> “We have stopped spending our foreign reserve to import rice, there is sufficiency in rice as we now produce it locally.”<br /> <br /> The President expressed confidence that his victory is assured in the state and North West region, and solicited for the support of all to ensure peace and economic development of the country.<br /> <br /> He also promised that his administration, if re-elected in the 2019 general elections, will continue to make life easier for all Nigerians.<br /> <br /> The President then called on the people of Kaduna state to ensure that they vote for all APC candidates to enable the party complete all ongoing developmental projects and programmes across the country.<br /> <br /> He assured the electorate that the APC administration would not betray Nigerians or allow anyone to betray them.<br /> <br /> Earlier, National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said that the fundamental issues of the campaign were the pronouncements by the PDP presidential candidate to sell the NNPC just as they sold NITEL, NEPA, Nigerian Airways and other government agencies, saying that the people should resist the move by not voting for them.<br /> <br /> He called on the electorate to reject the PDP because it was responsible for the collapse of the biggest textile industries in Kaduna State, sending thousands of people out of job.<br /> <br /> Oshiomole said Kaduna is home to the President and himself, adding “with what I have seen here today, the APC has already won the general elections.<br /> <br /> “I am therefore calling on you to ensure that you vote for all of the candidates of the APC from top to bottom during the general elections.”<br /> <br /> Earlier, the Director General, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Rotimi Amaechi, urged party supporters to vote the party all through to ensure smooth running of the APC administration.<br /> <br /> “APC will see votes, but I must advise you, PDP has a rigging machinery. They hardly share their worries like men do,” Philip said on Friday in Jos.<br /> <br /> He spoke at a seminar organised by AFRICAMSI, an NGO, to sensitise people on depression and its effects on the society.<br /> <br /> The seminar had the theme: “African Woman: Managing The Evil of Stress, Depression and Suicide in the 21st Century”.<br /> <br /> Philip advised people with symptoms of depression to promptly seek medical help.<br /> <br /> “When a person gets extremely sick, most likely the individual will see a doctor; similarly, seeing a psychiatrist means the patient needs help and advice.<br /> <br /> “Unfortunately, in our society, going to a psychiatrist often suggests to family members that the patient is insane or a lunatic,” he said.<br /> <br /> He said that keeping mental challenge to oneself was “highly detrimental to health”, noting that many lives had been lost because of such attitude.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “People hardly seek help for mental challenges because of the stigma usually associated with such situations. Unfortunately, by the time the challenge is discovered, it is usually too late,” he said.<br /> <br /> He emphasised the need to disabuse the minds of people on such stigma, saying that it had discouraged many from seeking psychiatric help early enough.<br /> <br /> In her speech, Mrs. Linda Opuene, a clinical psychologist with JUTH, said that a feeling of overwhelming fatigue, sleeping disorder and internal feeling of loneliness were symptoms of depression.<br /> <br /> “Other symptoms of depression include loss of interest in things that one initially derived joy from, inability to concentrate, and the feeling of worthlessness.<br /> <br /> “Very often, too, a depressed person appears lost in deep thoughts,” she added.<br /> <br /> She blamed the rise in depression on the rapid global changes, adding that 90 per cent of people who commit suicide were depressed.<br /> <br /> Opuene added that stress, when poorly managed, could also lead to depression, saying that the trend was a global cause of diseases because it usually affect an individual’s overall health status.<br /> <br /> Earlier, Dr. Caleb Attah, the founder of the organisation, had said that the seminar was organised to help women and the society to be aware that stress and depression could be managed.<br /> <br /> Attah said that the NGO was ready to provide support to individuals with mental health challenges. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="165" data-original-width="306" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiROxsOeeAR5M62sYihozglUahT7ssJjnrYLz3dXWup-W0-b98hvZ022bF749L8P0VxK8kmqvimmpRMNLYmtpFS6ZLnaqxwziIctajyat4hvtIzRmG-54o_inO2XzkVgAle46CIfo02AP5S/s400/Air+Marshal+Adesola+Amosu+Nunayon.jpg" width="400" /></div> <br /> <br /> The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd.), to permanently forfeit to the Federal Government the N2.2bn found by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in his possession.<br /> <br /> A former NAF’s Director of Finance and Budget, Air Commodore Olugbenga Gbadebo, was equally ordered to permanently forfeit a sum of N190,828,978.15 recovered from him to the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> Also forfeited was a sum of N101m recovered from Solomon Enterprises, a company linked to Amosu.<br /> <br /> Justice Mojisola Olatoregun ordered that the forfeited funds should be paid into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account, adding that the order must be complied with within 14 days and the EFCC must file an affidavit to show compliance.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The judge said having looked at the application brought before her for the forfeiture of the sums; she saw no reason why Amosu, Gbadebo and Solomon Enterprises should not be ordered to permanently forfeit the money to the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> Justice Olatoregun said she agreed with the EFCC that the funds were proceeds of criminal activities, holding that, “They (the defendants) failed to provide any facts as to the level of probability to ascertain if the funds were obtained lawfully.”<br /> <br /> The EFCC had last year secured an interim order temporarily forfeiting the funds to the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> The anti-graft agency after publishing the interim forfeiture orders in the newspapers, subsequently applied to the court for the final forfeiture of the funds.<br /> <br /> Ruling on the application on Wednesday, Justice Olatoregun held, “Upon examination of the two applications asking that the interim orders be set aside, dated July 28, 2018, from the first respondent and the interested party, I found no reason to set aside the orders. The applications are hereby dismissed.<br /> <br /> “The only conclusion I can reach is that the funds are proceeds of an unlawful activity.<br /> <br /> “The affidavits disclose no reason why the order of final forfeiture should not be made.”<br /> <br /> In ordering the permanent forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government, Justice Olatoregun rejected the argument of the defence counsel that the N22.8bn fraud charges against Amosu and others were still pending before the court and that the forfeiture order would foist a fait accompli on their clients should they not be found guilty.<br /> <br /> Justice Olatoregun said the forfeiture proceedings were an “action in rem” and a non-conviction based forfeiture.<br /> <br /> “The requirements for the two proceedings are different and distinct,” she held.<br /> <br /> She emphasised that in forfeiture proceedings, evidential burden shifts to the respondents to prove that they obtained the money lawfully, which she said they failed to do.<br /> <br /> “The case (forfeiture) can go in the face of the criminal proceedings,” she said.
