Women’s aspirations became second to fulfilling their “wifely duties.” It sounds terribly depressing, to be honest.</span></div>

What makes a woman a wife isn’t about being docile, submissive, and letting the man run the show. Thanks to the Women’s Movement, there is an equality that makes both men want to find their partner and not their, well, maid.</span></div>

I don’t mean any kind of romantic ideal, but like, proper love, where you love them so much that even when you’re mid-argument and super angry you still make sure they take an umbrella to work because it might rain. Any person who loves you that much in equal measure, and doesn’t mind risking a s*x-related hip fracture when you’re both in your 70s is definitely marriage material.”</span></div>

She would also have an insatiable intellectual curiosity and big b**bs. But in all seriousness, I don’t know that we need to have the perfect woman to qualify as marriage material. I know I don’t. All I need is that person who makes the concept of being with anyone else an exercise in idiocy.”</span></div>

That’s the most important thing a woman a can have if I were to want to marry her. Of course I’d want her to be kind, genuine, adventurous and someone with whom I’d like to share my life but above all is sense of humor. Laughing and loving together is what makes a long-lasting relationship.”</span></div>

Not because I want her in the kitchen but because I can’t cook to save my life but eating is a passion of mine. If her passion is to cook and mine is to eat then we can’t lose. I’d like to say once again that this isn’t me giving into gender stereotypes. Cooking and eating together is sexy. I guess I’m a regular old George Costanza.”</span></div>

They fought too often and I never saw them, not once, show any sort of affection toward each other. Because of that, a woman who is affectionate and loving is someone with whom I want to grow old with. I don’t ever want my kids to wonder why mom and dad never hugged, kissed, or cuddled, like I always wondered. I want them to know we love each other and they were born from that love.”</span></div>

This would certainly be a fair thing for a woman to want in a potential husband too, by the way.”</span></div>

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that he has absolute confidence and respect for the Judiciary to do justice in the state governorship legal tussle, pointing out that based on the April 11 election, his mandate would be upheld in the course of the Appeal process .<br />

Also, Rivers State Stakeholders on Thursday declared that they are solidly behind Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike who was duly elected on April 11. The stakeholders included elected senators, House of Representatives members, traditional rulers, Elder statesmen and state legislators.<br />

Speaking at the Stakeholders meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Nyesom Wike advised the people of the state never to criticise judges despite the judicial setback, pointing out that the appeal process will correct the judicial opinion of the state tribunal.<br />
<br />
Governor Wike dissociated himself from a statement from one of his aides describing the tribunal judgment as judicial terrorism and gang-up. He said the aide had no mandate to issue such a statement, noting that as a lawyer he respects the judiciary and knows the appellate process to seek redress.<br />
<br />
“Be assured by the Grace of God our lawyers are working hard to file the appeal within stipulated time. I have told people that it is not in our character to cast aspersions on judges. I have also told people not to speak on my behalf to castigate judges. The tribunal is not the final appellate court on this matter. There is no need of castigating the judiciary.<br />
<br />
“We are not one of those when judgment favours you, you says you have confidence in the judiciary. When it does not favour you, you lose confidence in the judiciary.<br />
<br />
“I want to say in the past two days, you must have read where they quoted me as saying judicial terrorism or judicial gang-up, I never said so. And I never authorised anybody to say so on this matter”.<br />
<br />
The governor noted that his team of lawyers are working round the clock to complete the process of filing an appeal against the judgment.<br />
<br />
He assured the people that he is not distracted by the judgment. The governor said he is emboldened by the support of key stakeholders and the ordinary people to continue to discharge his responsibility to the people.<br />
Governor Wike told the stakeholders the Appeal Court judgment of Thursday striking out the paragraphs of the APC petition that alleged violence and crime against named and un-named security agents and political thugs has strengthened his case that will shortly go on appeal.<br />

In his remarks, Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus stated that the people are behind Governor Nyesom Wike against the struggle by external forces to invade the state.<br />
<br />
Also speaking, Senator George Sekibo said that Governor Wike was duly elected and his election will be updated in the course of the course of the appeal.<br />
<br />
Former Minister of Transport, Dr Abiye Sekibo, Former UBA Chairman, Chief Ferdinand Alabrabra and Former NBA President, Chief OCJ Okocha, on behalf of different sections of the state declared the overwhelming support of the people for the governor.

An alleged self-confessed pastor, Sadeeq Mustapha, is facing trial at a Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting at Ogba, Agege where he has been charged with alleged attempt to rape two men.<br />
<br />
Sadeeq (27) allegedly attempted to forcefully have sexual intercourse with a transporter, Oladimeji Taiwo, and a teacher, Yusuf Idowu, on October 9 and 10. The incident allegedly took place at No 9 Disu Akogun Street, Dopemu, Lagos.<br />

The two-count charge against the suspect read: “That you, Saseeq Mustapha, on the 9th day of October, 2015 at 9, Disu Akogun Street, Dopemu, Agege, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by forcefully wanting to have sex with one Oladimeji Taiwo ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 166 (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, Nigeria, 2011.<br />
<br />
“That you, Sadeeq Mustapha, on the 10th day of October, 2015, at about 02.30hrs, at the same place and magisterial district, did forcefully wanted to have sex with one Yusuf Idowu ‘m’ by ordering him to pull off his clothes and committed an offence punishable under Section 166 (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, Nigeria, 2011″.<br />
<br />
The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.<br />
<br />
In his statement to the police, Oladimeji, one of the alleged victims narrated that the defendant met him in Dopemu area of the state, introduced himself as a pastor and then asked him for road direction around the area. After directing him, the alleged victim said the suspect requested to pray for him and that, since he liked associating with men of God, he took him (the pastor) to his house where he introduced him to his fellow tenants as a brother.<br />
<br />
Oladimeji explained that they went into prayer session after the suspect had “blessed a table water he bought” on their way home, saying the prayer, which started late in the night, lasted for some time. He alleged that while the prayer lasted, the suspect ordered him to pull off his trousers and shirt, which he did. He added that, at a point, he started noticing some moves by the suspect and, as such, decided not to close his eyes anymore.<br />
<br />
Oladimeji further alleged that the suspect’s mood changed as he asked him to lie down flat because, according to the suspect, the level of prayer they were about to go into required that he (the suspect|) lies on top of the person receiving the prayer. But that on noticing that the suspect was about to sleep with him rather than pray for him, he stood up, directed his gaze at the suspect, who had noticed a resistance to his intention, and warned him sternly against the attempt. He said he called off the prayer and sat down wondering with disbelief the alleged attempt to rape him.<br />
<br />
He said that because he didn’t want to disgrace a man who said he was a man of God and the fact that he had already introduced him as a brother, he allowed the suspect to go in the morning, unmolested, but told him never to come to his house again.<br />
<br />
Oladimeji said that after that, he left for work and did not return till the following morning. Upon his return, the alleged victim was amazed to still meet the suspect in his house. This was because the second victim, Yusuf, who only saw the Sadeeq and his co-tenant the previous night, did not know what had happened and, as such, had admitted the suspect into his apartment the second night during which the defendant allegedly attempted to rape him in the same manner he tried to rape Oladimeji the previous night.<br />
<br />
On sighting the suspect, the latter said he ordered him to leave the house immediately but that Mustapha refused, prompting him to pick up a machete to attack him but for the intervention of neighbors who were later shocked to hear what the suspect allegedly did to his two victims. Still reluctant to leave the house, Oladimeji said he called his uncle, who instructed him to get the suspect arrested, which he did.<br />

The Lagos State Government has shut down Marina’s Workers Mosque on Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria over poor waste management and also vowed to shut down filthy markets across the state.<br />

While monitoring the October edition of the monthly sanitation exercise in Mainland and Lagos Island Local Governments, Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Samuel Adejare stated that any filthy market and motor parks in the state would be shut indefinitely if they did not put their environment in proper shape.<br />

Adejare said the declaration of zero tolerance in Lagos metropolis was to save the state from disaster resulting from unkempt environment.<br />

“That is why we ordered the closure of the mosque for discharging effluent in the drainage. Marina is our pride, asset and our heritage. We cannot allow anyone to mess it up. This mosque is a temporary building for worship, but we cannot tolerate improper waste disposal.<br />
<br />
“There is no emotional feeling attached to it. We cannot allow that in Central Lagos. You can all see how they discharged their sewage on the road. Even God will not accept that and I will not allow that,” he stated.<br />
<br />
He lamented that religious house had violated the State’s environmental law, saying that any outfit that violate the environmental law would not be spared, while also decrying the environmental condition of the Island Central Business Districts, CBD which was the commercial hub of the state.<br />
Adejare said the CBD had degenerated due to the activities of street traders and indiscriminate discharge of waste.<br />

“Due to this, we have set-up taskforce comprising Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI officers to ensure that the CBD is well improved upon. This is our CBD and companies make so much money from here. They have to maintain the atmosphere here.”<br />
<br />
“The present administration will only cooperate with drivers and market unions that are ready to take ownership of parks and markets through proper management of their environment. We won’t send them away if they are ready to take ownership of their environment through proper cleaning. But if they are not serious about it, we will dislodge them and restore sanity in the areas,” he warned.<br />
“We will shut such park or market that have environmental challenged. We cannot allow cholera outbreak. This (market) is where we buy what we eat daily. And that was why I have decided to make Lagos environment my office and not Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.<br />
<br />
“We are here to make change and take the state to the next level. On Ilaje Otumora slum, in Lagos Mainland Local Government, we are going to sit down and find solution to it. In fact one of our drainage systems that we channeled into the lagoon has been blocked. So, we are going to stop that from happening”, he said.

The Nigerian then doubled his side's advantage three minutes after the break, evading James Tomkins to pick up Ikechi Anya's cross and fire past Adrian from just inside the penalty area.<br />

The Hammers had salt rubbed into their wounds in the closing minutes when James Collins was sent off for a dreadful challenge on Ighalo that left referee Keith Stroud with no option but to dismiss him.<br />

A dominant Watford side were well worth the full three points and could have led as early as the eighth minute. Nathan Ake's header from Ben Watson's corner drew a fine point-blank save from Adrian and Stroud waved away penalty claims after Carroll nodded Troy Deeney's follow-up against his own arm.<br />

The hosts had another claim for a penalty when Almen Abdi's flick appeared to hit Collins's hand, Ighalo played on and forced Adrian into another smart stop.<br />

But the pressure finally told. Carroll - making his first Premier League start since February - dawdled in the area and Ake stole in before squaring across goal for Ighalo, who pressured Cresswell to force it into the net.<br />

Another West Ham error helped the Hornets three minutes after the interval. Tomkins made a hash of Ikechi Anya's low cross from the left, allowing Ighalo to take a touch out of his feet before hammering his shot into the left-hand corner.<br />

Adrian was equal to Ighalo one-on-one as Watford turned the screw and Deeney miscued badly from the edge of the box after Etienne Capoue did well in midfield.<br />

Carroll sliced a volley wide and Enner Valencia hit the post as Bilic's men tried to mount a late comeback but their momentum was checked as Collins was handed his marching for orders for going through the back of Ighalo in the 84th minute, helping Watford cruise to a first home win over West Ham in the league since 1985.

I am saddened that the former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso, a man whom I have always considered a friend and one whom I have always respected could insult our reverred Yoruba elders. A few days ago, during a function in Ibadan, it was widely reported in the media that he asserted that the recent demand by the Yoruba elders that all Fulani herdsmen ought to be banned from the South-West as a consequence of the hideous atrocities that they have been committing against our people is somehow inappropiate and misguided.<br />

<br />
Instead of stopping there he went further by attempting to give us an unsolicited lecture about his Fulani heritage and pedigree and about the benefits of having a good education: imagine that coming from one of them. He concluded by telling the Yoruba elders to just “shut up”. Such impudence and insolence is rarely seen and this final insult may represent a defining moment in the history of the relationship between the Yoruba and the Fulani in our country. Worse still, this comes barely a few weeks after Chief Olu Falae, a much-loved 77 year old Yoruba elder, was abducted, incarcerated, stripped naked, beaten, cut with matchetes, maimed, frog-marched, humiliated and kidnapped by a group of Fulani herdsmen. Unlike many others, Chief Falae was lucky to escape with his life because both before and since his abduction many other victims of the Fulani cattle rearers did not.<br />
<br />
These aliens are herdsmen and cattlerearers by the day and terrorists, murderers, vagabonds and rapists by the night. They have become a terror and an affliction to our people. That is what we have to live with in the South-West and many other parts of Southern Nigeria today. The Yoruba are still hurting from the abductions, murders, raids and consistent violence being meted out to them by these creatures from hell, yet no-one seems to care.<br />
<br />
Many Yoruba farmers are still living in trepidation of being attacked and butchered by the vagabonds and many have had to sit by helplessly as the heartless beasts raped and slaughtered their wives and daughters before their very eyes. Instead of attempting to calm our nerves and allay our fears by reaching out to us with an olive branch and condemning the criminal actions of his Fulani kith and kin, Rabiu Kwakawnso has instead indulged in his provocative and dangerous diatribe.<br />
<br />
It is a manifestation of the crass arrogance that some Fulani leaders have cultivated over the years that they feel that they can insult us in this way and get away with it. Worse still they seek to defend, rationalise and condone the activities of their barbaric and murderous herdsmen who have murdered, raped and pillaged thousands of our people and forcefully taken our lands and crops over the last few years.<br />
<br />
I will leave it to Afenifere, the Yoruba Council of Elders, the OPC and others to respond to Kwakwanso and those he represents because these are the groups and people that speak for the Yoruba nation. The only thing that I will say is that Kwakwanso’s thesis and theory about education being the answer to the menace and criminal activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the South-West does not make sense. It has no basis in logic, rationality or reason.<br />
<br />
In any case, if the herdsmen are not properly educated and do not know how to behave in a lawful and civilised manner when they are in the territory of others, whose fault is that? Is it not the fault of Kwakwanso and the other Fulani leaders who have refused to enlighten and educate their people over the last 50 years? That is the bitter truth.<br />
<br />
You cannot stop those herdsmen that have chosen to be murderers, vagabonds and rapists by simply educating them because what they do is inherent within them. Those that have chosen the path of criminality and violence are suffering from a sociopathic and psychotic disposition. Simply put they have an insatiable bloodlust and an irresistible desire to hurt others and to steal, maim, rape and kill. When I say this I am not referring to all Fulanis but only to those Fulani herdsmen who insist on indulging in violent and deviant behavior in our land.<br />
<br />
The only thing you can do to stop such people is to make them face the full wrath of the law for the crimes they have consistently committed and ban them from entering our territory. It has nothing to do with education. We do not want these herdsmen amongst us anymore because they are like a plague. All they do is kill, steal and destroy. They have done it throughout the Middle Belt for the last 50 years and now they are doing it in the South, and particularly in Yorubaland.<br />
<br />
Do Kwakwanso and the other Fulani leaders expect us to keep quiet whilst their people are terrorising, slaughtering and robbing ours? If so they are in for a big shock. We will not only not keep quiet but we will also continue to insist that they must get out of our land. And if the government refuses to protect us from them we shall take strong measures to protect and defend ourselves and our people. There is no crime in self defence.<br />
<br />
The days of talking down to us, treating us with contempt and treating us like slaves are long over. Kwakwanso and those he represents should not test our will or underestimate our resolve. We want peace but it cannot be at the expense of our lives and the liberty and safety of our people.<br />
<br />
The Yoruba cannot be butchered at will or treated like sacrificial lambs to the slaughter by anyone or any group of people. Senator Kwakwanso’s insult on the Yoruba elders will not go unanswered. Education is not the solution to the problem of the murderous Fulani herdsmen. Expulsion is.<br />
<br />
This brings us to the unfolding situation in our country today. It appears that the Fulani leaders of yesteryears were far more honest and forthcoming in the expression of their views and disposition about the South than the ones of today. Let us consider the following.<br />
<br />
In an essay titled “Nigeria’s History and A Morbid Obsession With Unity” written in Vanguard newspaper on October 6th, 2013, Dr. Douglas Anele wrote the following:<br />
<br />
“Now, it should be pointed out that before the July 29th, 1966 (northern military “revenge”) coup, prominent Northern leaders, led by the Sardauna of Sokoto, much more than their Southern compatriots, disliked the unification or amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria. For instance, at the inauguration of the Richards Constitution in 1947, Tafawa Balewa, who later became Prime Minister, declared, “We do not want, Sir, our Southern neighbours to interfere in our development. …I should like to make it clear to you that if the British leave Nigeria now at this stage the Northern people will continue their uninterrupted conquest to the sea.”<br />
<br />
At the General Conference held at Ibadan in January 1950, the Emirs of Zaria and Katsina made it quite clear that “unless the Northern Region is allotted fifty percent of the seats in the central legislature, it will ask for separation from the rest of Nigeria on the arrangements existing before 1914.”<br />
<br />
In March 1953 during a heated debate at the Federal House of Representatives, Ahmadu Bello (who later became Premier of the North Region) remarked that “the mistake of 1914 has come to light and I should like it to go no further.” When a delegation from the Action Group decided to visit Kano in May that same year “to educate the Northern peoples about the crisis in the House of Representatives over the self government motion,” Inua Wada, Kano Branch Secretary of the Northern People’s Congress (NPC), declared in a speech two days before its scheduled arrival that, “having abused us in the South these very Southerners have decided to come over to the North to abuse us”.<br />
<br />
Although the visit was cancelled eventually, it did not prevent the Kano riots in which scores of Ndigbo were murdered”.<br />
<br />
Wada, who later became Minister of Works in Tafawa Balewa’s government, was particularly virulent in his choice of words and many are of the view that his fiery submissions and threats of violence resulted in the Kano riots of 1953 which took place two days later and in which thousands of Southerners were slaughtered.<br />
<br />
To reiterate this point Bobson Gbinije, in his article titled “Igbo and Northern Leaders: Hate and National Cohesion” which was published on September 2015, wrote the following:<br />
<br />
“The invidious and inveterate mutual hatred and antagonisms between Easterners and Northerners through inspired hate speeches and media publications, dates back many years before independence. Sporadic outbreaks in Northern towns, particularly the Jos riots of 1945, had been occurring in the past but the British Administration barely took them seriously. However, after the ruthless massacre in Kano in May, 1953 the British were constrained to look into the matter by setting up a commission of inquiry on the Kano disturbances.<br />
<br />
The Report on the Kano disturbances posited that the remote causes suggested at the time could not by any means be referred specifically to Easterners. The attacks were attributed to the clash of cultures, the disparities in economic and social development between Northerners and Southerners, the occupation of strategic posts in the administrative, technical and commercial sectors of Northern life by Southerners and the leveling impact of Western religion and political ideologies introduced into the North by Southerners.<br />
<br />
It is on record that there were series of polemical and aggressive verbal exchanges between Northern Representatives and the Action Group members during the Lagos Conference. But the fuse that really set off the explosion in May 1953 was the proposed visit to Kano of an Action Group (AG) delegation led by Chief S.L. Akintola, an Ex-Minister (who was Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s deputy and who later became the Premier of the Western Region).<br />
<br />
The organisation and preparation of Northerners for the riots did not suggest to Easterners that they would be the main object of the attack. Northerners denied in 1953 that the massacres were ever organised or premeditated. But it is on record that two days before the disturbances began on Thursday, May 14, 1953, Mallam Inua Wada, then Secretary of the Kano Branch of the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) and later Federal Minister of Works, convened a meeting of the Native Administration sectional heads at the works Department in Kano during which he made a very ill-advised and provocative speech against the proposed visit of the Action Group delegation led by Akintola. Inua Wada said, inter alia,<br />
<br />
“having abused us in the south these very Southerners have decided to come over to the North to abuse us but we have determined to retaliate the treatment given us in the South. We have therefore organised about 1,000 men ready in the city to meet force with force. We are determined to show to Akintola and his group what we can do in our land when they come. The Northern Peoples Congress has declared a strike in all Native Administration Offices for Saturday, 16th May, 1953. We shall post a sufficient number of men at the entrance of every office and business place and we are prepared to face anything that comes out of this business”.<br />
<br />
It appears to me that with the “shut up” rhetoric of Rabiu Kwankwaso we may have another Inua Wada in the making. Whichever way history must not be allowed to repeat itself and Southerners must not be massacred. It is also clear that the violent and provocative rhetoric of today’s northern leaders will not go unanswered. Let us pray for the peace of our nation and let us hope that men like Rabiu Kwankwaso do not cause a second civil war.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that his government would prune the number of ministries in the government bureaucracy because Nigeria is broke.<br />
<br />
He also hinted that he appointed 36 ministers to fulfil the spirit of the constitution and that some of the ministers may not be assigned portfolios.<br />
<br />
He said they would however sit at cabinet meetings.<br />
<br />
He said Nigeria was materially and morally vandalised by the Jonathan administration and at the moment, the country is having great problems paying workers.<br />
<br />
‘Where is the money’, the President shot back at his interviewer, as he underlined the great financial crisis that Nigeria is going through.<br />

Victor Moses was left out of next month’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Swaziland because he skipped Nigeria’s recent friendlies in Belgium, a top soccer official told africanFootball.com.<br />

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe, has denied charges against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) sitting in Abuja.<br />

Reacting to the allegations, Orubebe said he will address the media tomorrow.<br />

He said he did not demand and collect bribe of N70 million from a contractor handling a skill acquisition project for the ministry when he was minister and does own the plots of lands in Asokoro and Kyame, as alleged.<br />

“I cannot lay claim to plots of land I had since donated to other people and moved on in life.<br />
<br />
“I have an image and integrity to keep and none of the people who know me can say that I have ever collected a bribe from anyone,” the former minister said.<br />
<br />
The charge against him which is dated October 8, was signed by a senior legal officer at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Mr. Peter Danladi.<br />
<br />
FG alleged that the former minister pocketed a bribe of N70m that was given to him by one Pastor (Dr.) Jonathan Alota, the owner of a company, Chemtronics Nigeria Limited, that benefited from contracts that were awarded by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, whilst Orubebe was in office.<br />
<br />
He was also accused of falsely declaring his assets in 2011, offence under section 15 of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap C15, FG, received bribe of N50m in 2012 and another N20m in 2013, an offence contrary to section 10 of the CCB & Tribunal Act, 2004, and punishable under Section 23 (2) of the same law.<br />
He is to appear before the CCT on November 9.

A former Governor of Lagos, Bola Tinubu, has expressed shock at the passage of the Emir of Borgu, Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III, who died at a German hospital Friday.<br />

In a statement Saturday, Mr. Tinubu said it was upsetting that the Emir passed away less than 48 hours after he visited him and witnessed how close he was to full recovery.<br />

The statement read, “I received with shock, disbelief and great sadness the death of the Emir of Borgu in Niger State, Alhaji Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III [Mai Borgu]. He was full of life, jovial and eager to return to Nigeria this weekend. Ibrahim fled his home in Gwoza, northeast Nigeria, in August last year, when invading Boko Haram fighters took over the town as part of the Islamist group’s self-declared caliphate.<br />

The businessman lost his home, cars, money and his brother, who was shot dead as they fled the carnage, spending 14 days on the road and barely eating.<br />

With more than 2.5 million people displaced by the violence in Nigeria‘s northeast since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009, Ibrahim’s story is just one of many testimonies by survivors of the militants’ macabre attacks.<br />

Such stories are often lost in reports of relentless bombings, deaths and military offensives.<br />

But now, civil society activist Saratu Abiola is trying to change that through an online resource, to raise awareness across the world of the devastating human effects of the conflict.<br />

– Myth-busting –<br />

The accounts of mass killings, rape, abductions, arson and looting on Abiola’s Testimonial Archive Project (TAP) don’t make easy reading.<br />
<br />
But she said it was vital to record people’s stories of a conflict that, despite an estimated 17,000 deaths, still fails to grab headlines at home and abroad.<br />
<br />
“This is a small nation-building project,” Abiola told AFP by phone from Nigeria‘s financial hub, Lagos, some 1,000 kilometres from the epicentre of the violence.<br />
<br />
“It is intended to spark dialogue and advocacy on the humanitarian consequences of the Boko Haram insurgency by raising awareness through documenting the horrendous personal experiences of survivors of the violence.”<br />
<br />
The TAP, which has now been running for more than a year, also aims to dispel many of the myths that have been created about the conflict.<br />
<br />
One argument in the Christian-majority south has been that the violence in the mainly Muslim north was designed to scupper Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election chances as president earlier this year.<br />
<br />
“I wanted to project a depoliticised picture of the situation and put things in clearer perspective, and dispel all the wrong notions and assumptions a section of the country had on the violence, which is having devastating impact on Nigeria,” said Abiola.<br />
<br />
International attention on Boko Haram peaked after the mass abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, in April 2014.<br />
<br />
Abiola had already decided to act in February that year, after Boko Haram gunmen slaughtered more than 40 boys at a boarding school in Buni Yadi, in Yobe state.<br />
<br />
She had never been to the northeast, but managed to make contact with local activists, who then helped begin the process of meeting survivors of attacks.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
– ‘Started a conversation’ –<br />

<br />
“At first, a lot of people didn’t want to talk to me because they were either sceptical of my motive as an outsider or were scared of reprisals from Boko Haram if they talked,” she said.<br />
<br />
Gradually, stories were gathered and published online at testimonialarchiveproject.com, providing an insight into the nature and complexities of the violence.<br />
<br />
“A lot of us who don’t live in these areas don’t have an idea of what the insurgency is all about,” she said.<br />
<br />
President Muhammadu Buhari recently said his goal was to have all IDPs back home by the first anniversary of his taking office on May 29 next year.<br />
<br />
But with towns and villages devastated, that still looks a tall order.<br />
<br />
Of the 2.5 million displaced, more than 2.1 million are in Nigeria, with the vast majority staying with host families or relatives.<br />
<br />
International agencies have complained that not enough is being done to assist the displaced, who face poor living conditions in the camps and frequent outbreaks of disease.<br />
<br />
Since the TAP’s creation, some aid has been sent as well as donations from private individuals and corporate bodies.<br />
<br />
Security analysts and human rights groups have also tapped into the project’s growing number of testimonies for use in their reports.<br />
<br />
“There is much more awareness now, but I don’t think that is enough achievement because our goal is to influence deliberate government policy on the reintegration of the displaced, which will lead to the closure of all IDP camps and settlement of all displaced persons,” she said.<br />
<br />
“As far as I’m concerned, we have only started a conversation, but the goal is far-off,” said Abiola.

However the Egyptian military planes have spotted the wreckage of a Russian passenger plane that crashed Saturday in the Sinai Peninsula with 224 people on board, the government said.<br />

“Military planes have discovered the wreckage of the plane… in a mountainous area, and 45 ambulances have been directed to the site to evacuate dead and wounded,” a cabinet statement said.<br />
<br />
The “Russian civilian plane… crashed in the central Sinai,” the office of Prime Minister Sharif Ismail said in a statement.<br />

A senior aviation official said the plane was a charter flight operated by a Russian company carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members. Communication with the aircraft was lost, he added.<br />

Sergei Lzvolsky, an official with the Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsia told Interfax news agency that the plane had departed Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh at 5:51 am local time (03:51 GMT).<br />
<br />
He said the aircraft did not make contact as expected with air traffic controllers in Cyprus, and “since then the plane has not made contact and has not appeared on radars”.<br />
<br />
“Prime Minister (Ismail) is expected to meet the concerned ministries and competent authorities to follow up on the accident of the Russian civilian plane that fell in central Sinai,” Egyptian premier’s office said.

When Jose Mourinho lifted the Premier League trophy in May, nobody could possibly have predicted that he would be fighting to save his job five months later.<br />

That includes Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner. Any other manager working under the Russian billionaire would have been sacked by now, but he is said to be ‘desperate’ for Mourinho to turn it around at Stamford Bridge.<br />

The Chelsea board gave Mourinho a new four-year contract only in August and backed him with an unprecedented vote of confidence earlier this month. While pointedly declaring that results “have not been good enough” the club said the Portuguese had their “full support”.<br />

Abramovich has previously been ruthless with sacking managers, most notably Roberto Di Matteo, who won the FA Cup and Champions League in May 2012 and was sacked in November.<br />
<br />
This season, Chelsea made their worst start to a campaign in 37 years despite cruising to the title last term - and now Mourinho faces just over a week to determine his future at a club where he has professed his desire to stay for the next decade.<br />
<br />
Abramovich plans to re-evaluate Mourinho’s position during the November international break and the task is simple: the Blues need to win their next three matches against Liverpool, Dynamo Kiev and Stoke.<br />
<br />

It is a matter of urgency and he needs to show some signs of progress to convince the board that he is capable of finishing in the top four with a side that currently sits 15th in the Premier League table - nine points off the Champions League places.<br />
<br />
While Abramovich has shown unprecedented patience with Mourinho, his nerve has been tested by a record of five defeats from 10 league matches and the 52-year-old knows that the turnaround in results needs to be immediate.<br />
<br />
Confidence is now shattered in a Chelsea side that strutted to the title last season and Mourinho’s main task is to make his players believe again, because their quality is not in doubt.<br />
<br />
For the first time in his career as Chelsea manager, Mourinho is facing questions over whether the players are still behind him. It is perhaps a natural consequence of five defeats in 10 league matches, but there have been rumours of fall-outs with key men such as John Terry and Eden Hazard.<br />
<br />
Mourinho, though, insisted he still has the dressing room on board as he scratched for positives after the Blues were knocked out of the League Cup by 10-man Stoke on penalties on Tuesday night.<br />

"You honestly think the players are not with me? You think they didn't give everything to win the game? That's really sad, it's not sad for me, it's sad for the players,” Mourinho said.<br />
<br />
"It's a lack of respect to the players, not to me, for me it would be a fantastic situation if the players are against me, then I can say, 'We aren't getting the results because the players are against me'.”<br />
<br />
Mourinho also needs to stop moaning. His constant lambasting of the referees and his axing of club doctor Eva Carneiro have damaged his and the club’s image - and his media comments are wearing thin with Abramovich.<br />
<br />
The Portuguese cannot save his job with anything he says - only by showing improvement on the pitch.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Mourinho’s best teams rely first and foremost on a solid defence but Chelsea have already conceded 19 times in 10 league matches. That is only 13 less than they conceded in the whole of last season and four more than in Mourinho’s first ever season at the club in 2004-05.<br />
<br />
It is no secret that Mourinho wanted to sign John Stones in the summer but surely he can find a way to get Terry, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Branislav Ivanovic to play at a level closer to last season’s form.<br />
<br />
At the other end, the Blues' top scorers are Willian and Diego Costa with two league goals each. Pedro and Radamel Falcao have scored just one apiece, while Cesc Fabregas and player of the year Hazard are both yet to find the back of the net.<br />
<br />
Chelsea are boring and predictable in attack, there is no creativity and no-one who wants to take responsibility. Mourinho must convince his attacking stars to play with the courage and freedom that they haven’t been able to show so far.<br />
<br />
It has been a stunning and a rapid decline for last season’s champions. Mourinho can only hope that their return to form can be just as rapid, because he knows what is at stake.<br />

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s new manager, was in charge of the Borussia Dortmund side who ousted Real Madrid in the 2012-13 Champions League semi-finals, dashing Mourinho’s dream of bringing the European Cup back to the Bernabeu in what he knew would be his final season at the club.<br />

The pair resume hostilities with Mourinho reported to be facing the sack if results do not improve after the defending champions slumped to 15th place in the Premier League and were knocked out of the League Cup by Stoke City, but he has played down the significance of Klopp’s arrival.<br />

“They were a good team, they are a good team,” Mourinho told his pre-game press conference.<br />
<br />
“They had good players, they have good players. They had a very good manager, they have a new very good manager.<br />
<br />
“Everything is the same. They have changed some details obviously in their tactical approach, but this is the nature of the game, especially when you are thinking and speaking about two top managers.”<br />
<br />
Mourinho is expected to be in the dug-out despite having been hit with a Football Association misconduct charge after being sent to the stands during last weekend’s 2-1 loss at West Ham United.<br />
<br />
But the bad news continues to pile up for the 52-year-old, with former team doctor Eva Carneiro reported to have begun legal proceedings against Chelsea after being sidelined by Mourinho earlier in the season.<br />
<br />
Reports differ as to the likely consequences of another defeat for Mourinho, but there is general consensus that his future at Stamford Bridge is on the line.<br />
<br />
The dismissal of Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers was a stark reminder of the cost of failure in the English top flight and while the German drew his first three games, his side travel to London on the back of a 1-0 League Cup win over Bournemouth.<br />

With his back to the wall, Mourinho needs his senior players to stand up and be counted, but he may be without striker Diego Costa, who faces a late fitness test after going off against Stoke with a badly bruised rib.<br />
<br />
Pedro Rodriguez will also undergo a fitness test, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Branislav Ivanovic remain out, but Nemanja Matic is available again after a one-game ban.<br />
<br />
Klopp has also been inconvenienced by injury, with Kolo Toure, forced off against Bournemouth, the latest casualty, while Daniel Sturridge is taking time to recover from a knock sustained in training.<br />
<br />
But James Milner is back from suspension and Christian Benteke is in contention to lead the line after missing the Bournemouth game with a knee ligament strain.<br />
<br />
Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea in eight matches and have not won at Stamford Bridge since November 2011, when they won twice there in the space of 10 days in the league and League Cup.<br />
<br />
But Klopp got the better of Mourinho when their paths crossed in 2012-13, with Dortmund taking four points from Madrid in the Champions League group phase before eliminating them in the last four after a stirring 4-1 first-leg win in which Robert Lewandowski scored all four goals.<br />

While a similar outcome on Saturday could have grave repercussions for Mourinho, Klopp remains a fan.<br />
<br />
“From my side, I am full of respect for his work,” Klopp said.<br />
<br />
“I think if you are not a journalist or a referee he can be a nice guy, and I am not one of these so we have a good talk.<br />
<br />
“He is emotional, I am emotional, but we are full of enough respect after the whistle that normal life starts again and you can talk normally about things that happen and that is what we did.”

Saraki loses bid to stop trial at Conduct Tribunal

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, yesterday lost his bid to stop his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).<br />
<br />
The Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed the Senate President’s appeal challenging the tribunal’s jurisdiction over his trial.<br />
<br />
He is standing trial on a 13-count charge of false asset declaration before the CCT).<br />
<br />
In a split decision of two-to-one, the appellate court held yesterday that Saraki’s appeal lacked merit.<br />
<br />

Justices Moore Adumein (presiding) and Mohammed Mustapha resolved the six issues raised in the appeal in favour of the respondents while Justice Joseph Ekanem dissented on the issue of whether an official of the Federal Ministry of Justice was competent to endorse a charge in the absence of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).<br />

While Justices Adumein (who read the lead judgment) and Mustapha dismissed the appeal, Justice Ekanem, in his dissenting judgment, upheld the appeal and quashed the Senate President’s trial before the CCT.<br />
<br />
Since, by the tradition of the court, the majority decision forms its judgment, it implies that the position held by Justices Adumein and Mustapha forms the court’s judgment in Saraki’s appeal.<br />
<br />
By the appellate court’s decision yesterday, Saraki’s trial will now proceed before the CCT on the next adjourned date of November 5.<br />
<br />
The CCT had delayed proceedings to await the outcome of Saraki’s appeal.<br />
<br />
Saraki had contended in his appeal that the charge against him was not personally served on him; that the tribunal was not validly constituted because two of its three members currently sit; and that the absence of a substantive Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) had rendered the charges incompetent.<br />
<br />
He also argued that the CCT lacked criminal jurisdiction, was not a court recognised by the Constitution, and that it lacked the coercive power to order anybody’s arrest.<br />
<br />
Justice Adumein, in the lead judgment, rejected all the arguments advanced by Saraki, including his contention that the CCT, being an inferior body to the Federal High Court, ought not to have proceeded with his trial despite an order by the court.<br />
<br />
He held that Saraki’s complaint about not being personally served with the charge “was of no moment, having appeared and taken his plea before the tribunal.”<br />
<br />
“On September 21, his counsel also appeared before the tribunal and made series of applications without raising the issue of non-service,” Justice Adumein said.<br />
<br />
On whether two of the three members of CCT could form a quorum, Justice Adumein, though noted that there was a “lacuna” in the laws, held that “the Interpretation Act has becomes a helpful piece of legislation” by providing that a member of the tribunal and its Chairman could validly sit and conduct proceedings.<br />
<br />
Justice Adumein upheld the argument by respondents’ lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), to the effect that by the provision of Section 28 of the Interpretation Act, two members of the tribunal (including the Chairman) could form a quorum to validly conduct its proceedings<br />

He also held that by the provisions of Section 174(1) and (2) of the Constitution, where there is no substantive AGF, any law officer in the office of the AGF could validly file charges.<br />
<br />
“M.S Hassan, a Deputy Director in the department of the AGF is eminently qualified to initiate criminal proceedings.<br />
<br />
“The Solicitor-General of the Federation, in the absence of the AGF, may perform any of the duties and shall have the same powers as are imposed by law on the AGF,” the judge said.<br />
<br />
On the issue of the tribunal not being a court, Justice Adumein held that “there is no inherent difference between the tribunal and the court.”<br />
<br />
He noted that “the terminologies and phrases used in the CCT Act, such as “arraignment”, “arrest”, “taking plea”, “guilty” and “conviction” are associated with criminal proceedings.<br />
<br />
“The Code of Conduct Tribunal is a criminal court, albeit with limited jurisdiction,” he held.<br />
<br />
“Having resolved all the issues against the appellant, I hold that the appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed,” Justice Adumein said.<br />
<br />
Justice Ekanem, who dissented on a single issue, held that the absence of Attorney-General of the Federation had made the charge to become defective.<br />
<br />
He was of the view that the failure by M. S. Hassan (who endorsed the charge) to indicate who authorised him to file the charge in his letter to the tribunal seeking leave to file the case, rendered the charge incompetent.<br />
<br />
Saraki’s lawyer, Mahmud Magaji (SAN), who spoke with journalists after the court had rendered its judgment, said: “We will be testing the veracity of the Court of Appeal’s judgment at the Supreme Court.”<br />
<br />
Jacobs, who also reacted to the judgment, said the coast was now clear for the CCT to proceed with the case before it.<br />
<br />
He said since there is no pending order staying its proceedings, and that since under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 appeal cannot act stay, the proceedings before the CCT would not be affected should Saraki appeal to the Supreme Court.
