Both teams could have won at Wembley after the end of the second 45 minutes but England just managed to carve out the 2-1 victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.<br />

England dominated the opening 45 minutes, with Gary Cahill and Harry Kane netting the goals, before an early second half strike from Alex Iwobi made it a harder task for the hosts.<br />
<br />
But overall, a fairly good performance from the Super Eagles with one more warm-up match against czech republic to come on Thursday.<br />

Meanwhile, Nigeria fans gave Dele Alli a loud boo during the match and also gave him loud send-off boo as he was substituted for Delph in the last 10 minutes.<br />

Okorocha in a statement signed by Sam Onwuemeodo his Chief Press Secretary said if the Party cannot fly again without brandishing Governor Rochas Okorocha’s name in a quite unfortunate manner it should, wind-up and fuse into the All Progressives Congress,APC”<br />
Okorocha accused APGA of using his name to market their party but in a very wrong way. First, they came up with the ridiculous story of Okorocha wanting to return to APGA. And they never said anything that could convince anybody to believe them.<br />

He also said ‘Chief Oye and his Cohorts in APGA are yet to recover from the deep cut the exit of Governor Okorocha inflicted on APGA, for the merger that saw the emergence of APC. They are yet to recover from the shock occasioned by that patriotic action by Governor Okorocha and they can’t help the situation, aside talking about Okorocha and APGA as if something is left with the Party.’<br />

The statement read thus<br />
The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, should, as a matter of fact, wind-up and fuse into the All Progressives Congress, APC, if the Party cannot fly again without brandishing Governor Rochas Okorocha’s name in a quite unfortunate manner.<br />

Innocent Nigerians who have been following events in the past three months would agree with us that the APGA elements have decided to be using Governor Okorocha’s name to market their party but in a very wrong way. First, they came up with the ridiculous story of Okorocha wanting to return to APGA. And they never said anything that could convince anybody to believe them.<br />
<br />
They never said whether he wrote to them or approached any of them, or even sent people to approach them on his behalf. They also did not mention what could be the attractions in APGA this time, that could make the Imo Governor thinking about returning to a Party he left with the soul and dropped it on the APC table. We kept quiet and never talked to them.<br />
<br />
Few days ago, the National Chairman of the Party, Chief Victor Oye had a Press Conference in Abuja and the target of the Press Conference was Governor Okorocha. Chief Oye heavily insulted the Imo governor unprovoked and unwarranted. He talked about how the Party would not accept Rochas again, without telling the world whether there was any application from Okorocha to that effect.<br />
<br />
It is obvious that Chief Oye and his Cohorts in APGA are yet to recover from the deep cut the exit of Governor Okorocha inflicted on APGA, for the merger that saw the emergence of APC. They are yet to recover from the shock occasioned by that patriotic action by Governor Okorocha and they can’t help the situation, aside talking about Okorocha and APGA as if something is left with the Party.<br />
<br />
Infact, Oye and Co. are using Okorocha’s name as a marketing strategy for APGA. He could do that in a more refined manner than using insults and abuses. Governor Okorocha took the soul of APGA to APC and he did it in the overall interest of Ndigbo and Nigeria. He deserves accolades from reasonable sons and daughters of Igbo land.<br />
<br />
Chief Oye also tried to play down Governor Okorocha’s monumental achievements in Imo. And in case he has not read our claims on the governor’s achievements in Imo, we may repeat it here for his sake. What Governor Okorocha has achieved in Imo as governor have surpassed the grand total of the achievements of all those who had governed the State before him. We expect him to challenge us on this claim if he so wishes.<br />
<br />
Equally, Chief Oye should work and make APGA win another State in the South-East where there are five States and only one is APGA at the moment. And in 2011 Okorocha won his election for who God has made him to be and not because of APGA. If Chief Oye doubts this hypothesis let him make APGA to win in Enugu or Ebonyi that also have close boundaries with Anambra State that is controlled by APGA this time.<br />
<br />
Finally, Igbo people like Oye should learn how to celebrate their God-given stars like Owelle Okorocha instead of trying fruitlessly to run down such men.</div>

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has said that his team does not need star players such as the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, Lionel Messi of Argentina or Luka Modric of Croatia before they could perform well at the 2018 World Cup.<br />

He further explained that the unity in the team has been key to their success.<br />
<br />
Rohr has repeatedly said that his team will not be looking up to a particular player in the tournament but will have to play as a unit.<br />

The Franco-German told Deutsche Welle, ”I think it’s fantastic for Egypt to have such a player, just as Argentina have (Lionel) Messi or Croatia have (Luka) Modric.<br />
<br />
”But we have a good team spirit instead. It is not the individual quality, even if that quality is huge, that will make the difference, but the best team spirit. This is more important than having one Mohamed Salah.”<br />
<br />
”I don’t need to create that. We already have a good team spirit because everybody is happy to come and to play for Nigeria and to represent the green and white colors.<br />
<br />
”And on the field we keep it simple. There’s usually not much time for preparation so I use simple tactics that all the players can understand no matter which club they play for.”<br />
<br />
The Super Eagles face England in their World warm-up match on Saturday.<br />

The Special Assistant on Media to Hon. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (M.O.B.), Ahmed Salami has said there was no truth in story making the round that he had been in coma since Friday evening when he was hit by bullets at the rally organized for Dr Kayode Fayemi, by the party.<br />

Bamidele and six others were hit by bullets and sustained various degrees of injuries through gunshots fired by a policeman drafted to maintain orderliness in the rally attended by mammoth crowd of party adherents and admirers of the governorship candidate of the party.<br />
In a statement in Ado Ekiti by Salami on Saturday, said though Bamidele immediately fell and passed out due to the trauma he suffered when the bullets suddenly pierced his abdominal region and leg.<br />
<br />
“We appreciate his supporters and APC members across the state, said he had since regained consciousness.<br />
<br />
“The way he fell in the full glare of the crowd and party supporters fueled the insinuation that he is still in coma.<br />
<br />
“Let me assure our supporters in Ekiti and other concerned Nigerians that Bamidele not in coma. He has regained consciousness and fast recuperating due to prompt and intensive medical treatments he received thereafter.<br />
<br />
Its true that Bamidele has passed through major surgeries and the bullets have been removed from his abdominal region and leg. We implore our supporters to be calm and be law abiding whilst the situation is under control.<br />
<br />
“We appreciate our people for the outpouring of affections since the incident occurred and this underscored the strong bond of unity among the APC members and Ekiti people in general.<br />
<br />
“We want to say that the shooting was very unfortunate and unwarranted in view of the decorous and peaceful ways our people comported themselves from Akure, Ondo State capital via Ikere and to Ado Ekiti.<br />
<br />
“We charge the police authorities to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the shooting and bring whoever that was complicit to justice for a country that has respect for the sanctity of human lives to be attainable”, he said.<br />
<br />
“We specially appreciate the governor of Ondo State, Barrister Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his wife Erelu Bisi Fayemi, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Senator Ayo Arise and other party bigwigs for the quick responses in saving Bamidele’s life and that of other victims”.</div>

Some Borno Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), from five local government councils have denied  Amnesty International report on alleged rape and human right abuses against them by the military.<br />

Newsmen recall that AI had in its latest report alleged that Nigerian soldiers raped thousands of women and girls who escaped from the Boko Haram insurgents.<br />
<br />
The organisation also alleged that the soldiers killed many people who refused to be moved from territories rescued from the insurgents.<br />
<br />
But in separate interviews with newsmen, in Maiduguri, some of the IDPs denied the allegation, saying it was a fabrication.<br />
<br />
The IDPs who reacted to the newsmen interview were from Marte, Monguno, Gwoza, Gwuzamala, Nganzai, Bama and Konduga, some describing it as an outright fabrication while others said only civil cases had been recorded in camps within the last four years.<br />
<br />
Aisha Bukar, an IDP in Bakassi camp, said there were no cases of rape recorded in the camp within the last four years.<br />
<br />
Bukar said that soldiers were hardly seen in the camp premises except Non Governmental Organisations like SEMA and NEMA providing support to the IDPs.<br />
<br />
She said the soldiers only came into the camp during the distribution of food to keep the order.<br />
<br />
Hauwa Ismaila, another IDP said most cases recorded in the camps were civil cases such as fighting, arising from misunderstanding between persons in the camp.<br />
<br />
<br />
Amnesty International<br />
Ismaila admitted some cases of sexual exploitation had been reported, but it was between IDPs not with the military.<br />
<br />
Mabruka Dibal, another IDP from Gwoza said that the military had been very supportive by providing protection and ensuring that everyone was safe.<br />
<br />
Dibal said that it was unfortunate that some people were working towards frustrating the military men who had been sacrificing their lives to protect people.<br />
<br />
“I think they are trying to divert attention of fighting troops. Nobody is raping us. We have been protected for over four years. You can go around and ask anybody,”she said.<br />
<br />
Falmata Bukar, the Women’s leader in Dalori IDPs camp, also corroborated  the denials, saying they have been living in the camp peacefully.<br />
<br />
Bukar said: “We are IDPs from Bama and I can assure you that nothing of such has ever occurred in the camp in the last four years.<br />
<br />
“We have had some cases but mostly they were between our IDPs. Those who were found wanting of taking advantage of the female IDPs were arrested and punished.<br />
<br />
“We have referral centres where cases of human rights and other forms of abuses were reported and addressed,”she said.<br />
<br />
Newsmen report that officials of aid groups working in the camp also denied the allegation.<br />
<br />
Hajiya Yabawa Kolo, The Chairperson of SEMA told journalists that the agency had not received any case of domestic violence against IDPs in any of the camps across the state.<br />
<br />
“We have our camp managers and camp supervisors who monitor the day-to-day activities in the camps. We have put in place a feedback mechanism of reporting such cases”.<br />
<br />
Ali Maina, The Bakkassi camp Coordinator, said no cases of domestic violence were recorded in the camp, adding that  the camp was working toward  ensuring  that the  welfare of all IDPs was pioriotised.</div>

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, I slipped out of Nigeria. Where to? Beijing, in China, to attend an international seminar on National Governance for Presidential Advisers from Developing Countries.<br />

The two weeks seminar is under the auspices of the Graduate School of the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in collaboration with the country’s Ministry of Commerce.<br />
<br />
Ethiopian Airlines was the giant bird that ferried us on its wings, first to Addis Ababa, where we had about four hours stopover, and then to Beijing. Total flying time was about 15 hours.<br />
<br />
What do you do when such giant bird propels you through the air at almost dizzying speed? Forget all worries. Hand yourself to the divine powers. Eat. Sleep. Wake. Read. And sleep again. Life should be one long holiday, shouldn’t it? But then, too much sunshine makes a desert. Too much leisure can also be boring at the end of the day.<br />
<br />
We landed in Beijing at about 5 p.m, Thursday (which was 10 a.m Nigerian time). I cleared Immigration, went through Customs, and exited from the airport. I was to be met by the organizers of the seminar, who would have my name displayed on a large piece of paper. I scanned all the names held aloft, none resembled mine. Or did they write it in Chinese?<br />
<br />
I was still wondering, when a smart young man, possibly in his late teens or early twenties walked to me. He was obviously Nigerian.<br />
<br />
Are you Mr Femi Adesina?<br />
<br />
I answered in the affirmative. He greeted me warmly, introducing himself as Ibrahim Bala, from Kano, in Nigeria, and a final year engineering student in Beijing. He had been following me on both social and traditional media, and requested for photographs. I gladly obliged.<br />
<br />
Ibrahim is obviously the face of the future Nigeria. Engaging, bright, good conversationalist, bold. He knew what he wanted, and went for it.<br />
<br />
Done with pictures, I told him my dilemma. He whipped out his phone, and called the number on the invitation letter I’d been armed with from Nigeria. In a matter of minutes, two ladies showed up. One was Nancy, the other, Joy. They were to have been on hand to receive me, and apologized profusely. It turned out that the flight had landed about 30 minutes ahead of scheduled time. Talk of wind assisted flight. May the tail wind always assist you positively in the voyage of life. Amen, somebody!<br />
<br />
The seminar kicked off on Friday. There were delegates from at least 12 countries, across four continents: Nigeria, Republic of South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Serbia, Philippines, Ghana, Mauritius, Peru, Laos, Surinam, and Sri Lanka.Some countries had up to five representatives. But I was the only one from good, old Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The faculty was made of many professors, and other eggheads. The first friendship I struck was with Hon. Aggrey Tisa Sabuni, the Adviser on Economic Affairs to the President of South Sudan. When he heard that I was Adviser to the Nigerian President on Media and Publicity, he declared: “Oh, your job must be very tough. You are the shock absorber. When they can’t reach the Big Man himself, they will take it out on you. They come after you. Tough job. Same as mine. Everything about the economy in my country, I get all the blame.”<br />
<br />
You would think Sabuni lived with us in Nigeria. He got the antics of people we call the wailing wailers perfectly. When you can’t get to the boss, take it out on his aides. Cry and shout as if the world was coming to an end, over the flimsiest of all matters. Call the aides names, use foul words, abuse their father and mother at the same time.<br />
<br />
In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Sabuni said something which I considered spot-on: “This seminar has identified a badly needed ingredient in the developmental agenda of developing countries. It calls for the establishment and maintenance of strong institutions which in turn are able to plan and implement projects effectively and efficiently. Institutions that are able to safeguard transparency, accountability, and integrity in the management of public affairs and resources for the common good.”<br />
<br />
I agree. That is what President Muhammadu Buhari is trying to engender in Nigeria. And we will get there.<br />
<br />
An eye opening presentation was made by Prof Huang Xiaoyong, President, Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Topic was ‘The History and Outlook of China’s Economic Development.’ And by the time he surfed through history, you would think pre-1978 China was Nigeria of recent times.<br />
<br />
The global power that is today China was nowhere remarkable till the late 1970s. It was a developing country as any other, far behind Europe and America, till the leadership caught a new vision, and launched the country out of the morass in which it was marooned.<br />
<br />
From 1949, when the modern China emerged, till 1978, it was like wandering in the wilderness. The economic foundation was weak. Progress was slow. The economy could not stimulate the initiative of the workforce, and failed to improve their standard of living significantly. There was no electricity, no water conservation and irrigation, transportation was mainly by rafts, the country was barely able to feed its massive population. This must surely remind you of our own dear native land. Nigeria we hail thee!<br />
<br />
But then, the paradigm began to shift from 1978. In fact, 2018 marks the 40th year of the Chinese miracle, when the country began to turnaround. Nigeria, too, is turning, and one day, our children will mark the 40th anniversary of that turn, championed by President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
What did China do? It changed its development model to one driven by reforms, and opened up to socialist economic path with Chinese characteristics. And the result? The country has today moved from rafts to high speed train and home grown aviation. National income has increased 155 times. Grains output, which was 0.3 billion tons in 1978 had increased to 0.6 billion tons last year, thus guaranteeing food security for its over one billion population. Electricity, which was spasmodic, is now taken for granted, with a combination of hydro, fuel coal, gas, nuclear, renewable energy, and other forms. According to Prof Xiaoyong, China today has total stock of electricity higher than Europe put together.<br />
<br />
Again, there is social welfare/medical care cover for all elderly in both rural and urban areas. And many more…<br />
<br />
How did China get there? How did it tread the road which Nigeria has just ventured into in the Buhari years, after decades of waste and official corruption?<br />
<br />
From being a closed society, China opened up. It established diplomatic relations with the US in 1979. It won the bid for the Olympics in 2001, which it successfully hosted in 2008. It entered the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, thus opening up its industries. The ruling party, CPC, formulated what it called Readjusting, Restructuring, Consolidation and Improving China’s economy. Deng Xiaoping, the then President said revolution means the liberation of production, stressing that the essence of socialism is to liberate the productive forces, eliminate exploitation, eliminate polarization and ultimately achieve common prosperity.<br />
<br />
Between 1997 and 2007, China’s economy had entered a new phase of balanced development, while conquering the Asian financial crisis.<br />
<br />
The initial turnaround took at least two decades, before the Eldorado of today. That is the same thing some people want done in three years in Nigeria, and had begun to wail endlessly that they were hungry, when their kitchens were virtually being restocked. Some other people are seated in judgment, asking the horse rider leading Nigeria to Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey, to dismount in 2019. How did China keep the wailers quiet, both on the political and civil fronts?<br />
<br />
“Financing reforms was a huge challenge,” said Prof Xiaoyong. “We had people living overseas, who were very wealthy. We encouraged them to bring foreign capital home, and because they had emotional attachment to motherland, they complied. We gave preferential taxation, exemptions, and so on. Foreign investors became enthusiastic, and came.<br />
<br />
“Political stability was also very good. Without it, we could not have achieved what we did. China has its own model of democracy. The political parties must have a shared vision of the country, and the people must have a voice in shaping the future of the country.”<br />
<br />
Shared vision of the country. Very much lacking in Nigeria. A government amasses foreign reserves as Umaru Yar’Adua did, the next one squanders it. The reserves are being built again, but may we never return to Egypt. Amen.<br />
<br />
China had to retire politicians who didn’t share the vision of economic development. Nigeria must also do so in 2019, so that the current vision can be sustained for a better future.<br />
<br />
See some other things China has achieved in 40 years. GDP increased from RMB 364.5 billion in 1978 to 72.2047 trillion yuan in 2016. In 1978, China ranked 10th in terms of GDP, today it is second, following the USA.<br />
<br />
GDP per capita increased 10 times, with an annual growth of 10.1%. The country can feed over 1.3 billion people on its own. Nigeria has a GDP growth target of 7% by 2020, and has almost attained food self-sufficiency in three years of the Buhari administration. Who says the Chinese miracle is not possible with us? It is, and no mistake.<br />
<br />
China is today number one in Manufacturing, Industry, Commodity Trade, and Foreign Currency Reserve. All in 40 years. Nigeria can also get there, as long as we shut the door firmly against the rapacious suckers of the nectars of office.<br />
<br />
Today, President Xi Jinping is building on the achievements of his forebears. With the development of the country’s marketization and open door policy, China is working on promoting economic globalization, spreading prosperity round the world. Happily, Nigeria is on the positive side of that trend.<br />
<br />
Let me end on a lighter note. Since I got here, I’ve been eating mainly rice and vegetables. Why? That is what I know and I am familiar with on the menu.<br />
<br />
The comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st cracked a joke sometime ago, which keeps ringing in my ears, though it’s not my first time in China.<br />
<br />
A man had attended a buffet lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Lagos. The food was attractively laid out, and he couldn’t keep his eyes off any. When the stewards would tell him:<br />
<br />
“This is broccoli.” He would say: “Put.”<br />
<br />
“This is rice.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
“This is spinach.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
“This is asparagus.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
“This is fish fillet.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
“These are prawns.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
“This is shakuku.”<br />
<br />
“Put.”<br />
<br />
He didn’t know what shakuku was, but he must eat everything. His plate was piled high, and he dug into the meal, till he undermined the foundation. His stomach became rotund, and he belched noisily. At least, it was free food by the organizers of the party.<br />
<br />
Our friend went home, and within the next hour, his stomach began rumbling, so much so that it sounded like peals of thunder. At another time, the sound was like a combination of thunder and bomb. And he did the Usain Bolt, running to the toilet. As he fled, he was shouting: “It must be the shakuku. It must be the shakuku.”<br />
<br />
Within the next hour, he showed clean pairs of heels to the toilet nine times, shouting; “it must be the shakuku. It must be the shakuku.”<br />
<br />
The lesson? Always eat what you know. The race track is where to show your fleet-footedness, not between the living room and the small room.<br />

In an interview with Oak TV on Friday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, said Kalu should come out clear to on his “we used to kill people” statement.<br />

It can be recalled that the former Abia governor alleged that while he was still in PDP, he and his Cohorts kill people during congresses.<br />
<br />
“In PDP we used to kill People when they are doing this thing (Congresses), which is not good.”<br />

Kalu made the statement at the APC South-East caucus meeting in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Urji Kalu is a founding member of the PDP and was governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007.<br />

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has declared that Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, will be his first choice for the 2018 World Cup.<br />

Fielding questions from reporters in London on Friday, Rohr also insisted that the duo of Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi can be relied on always.<br />

However, the German made it clear that the 19-year-old Uzoho was his man.<br />

“The process of coming up with another goalkeeper was a long one. We had Carl Ikeme who was doing great for us until he fell sick. Then Daniel Akpeyi came up and gave his best as far as he could.<br />

“We also tried Ezenwa in the qualifiers and he lived up to expectations all through the qualifiers. But in our relentless effort to get a better replacement for Carl, we discovered Uzoho.<br />

“Uzoho has matured enough to become Super Eagles No.1. He is the goalkeeper for the future and he can only get better as he continues to play more games.<br />

“The Italy-based athlete was on holiday in Nigeria after the end of the season in Italy. The federation sympathised with the player’s family and his supporters in Nigeria and around the World. The Association of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, AUPCTRE, has alleged that politicians at different levels were working to privatise public utilities such as water corporations to themselves and their cronies.<br />

The labour union, however, said it will continue to resist such move with every strength at its disposal. National President of AUPCTRE, Comrade Anthony Benjamin made the allegation at the 6th quadrennial state delegates conference of the Union in Enugu, yesterday. The labour leader alleged that government leaders in the country were working to make public utilities inefficient so that they will crumble and have reason to privatise the institutions to themselves and their cronies.<br />
<br />
He cited the case of Lagos State water corporation which he said the union has been battling the state government against privatising.<br />
<br />
Analysing states performance indices, Benjamin stated that “only Enugu state is working a little, other states in the south east are not working.” He asked his members in the state to eschew selfishness and promote accountability.<br />
<br />
“We have become worse than politicians but we should rather move towards making the society a better place,” Benjamin urged his members.<br />
<br />
In his remarks, Enugu state Head of Service, Mr. Chidi Ezema disclosed that the state government has regularised the services of 880 previous casual workers into the mainstream of its civil service.<br />
<br />
Those he said their appointments were regularised included 800 volunteer teachers and 80 casual workers of the Enugu State Waste Management Authority, ENSWMA.<br />
<br />
“As we talk now, the 800 teachers are being captured into the main service, same as 80 ENSWMA staff,” said Mr. Henry Agbo, the Head of Administration Department who represented the Head of Service. He noted that workers’ attitude in the state had changed for the better because of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s disposition to enhancing quality and sustainable Public service through decent work practice and ethics.</div>

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has assured that his administration would transform the lives of the people and put an end to poverty in the state. Fayemi, who resigned as a minister on Wednesday stated this while addressing journalists at the Akure Airport on Friday.<br />

He was welcomed by party leaders from Ondo and Ekiti states with a large number of his supporters.<br />

He predicted victory for the party in the July 14 election, noting that the current government in Ekiti State has brought hardship on the people.<br />

His words, “I want to commend our people for their passion for excellence and determination to remove those who have brought our state to a state of comatose and I have no doubt in my mind, victory shall be ours. The time has come to remove poverty brought by the corrupt people in government today in Ekiti from the lives of our people and I pray God will perfect it for us.<br />

On his part, the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who led other members of the state executive council to receive Fayemi noted that the party was poised to take over Ekiti from what he described as misrule of the PDP.<br />
<br />
Akeredolu said: “It means a lot to us, a lot to the party and the people of Ondo State. We always craved to have a brotherly neighbour. Every arm of APC in the state is committed to this Ekiti project and it is a task that must be done because we are determined to make sure we reclaim Ekiti and restore what has been lost.<br />
<br />
“Fayemi is not new in government. He has done it before and he is only coming to restore what he had been doing. A lot of things need to be done right and I believe Ekiti State people will support him.”<br />

Fayemi, whose flight touched down at the Akure airport at exactly 12:20pm en route Ado Ekiti was accompanied by his running mate, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, former aspirants in the party, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Ayo Arise and former PDP spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.<br />

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bauchi State has urged the electorate in the state to register and get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) in order to be eligible to vote.<br />

The United Labour Congress (ULC) on Friday told Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige, to explain his `double-speak’ on the planned new minimum wage, to avoid confusion on the issue.<br />

On May 30, Ngige announced that the new National Minimum Wage would not be paid to workers by the end of September, contrary to a previous announcement by the Federal Government.<br />

Ngige’s announcement appears to have dampened the morale of workers, who have been expecting a new wage in September.<br />

Nigeria currently operates a wage structure for civil servants, described as one of the lowest in the world, despite its position as Africa’s top oil-bearing nation.<br />
<br />
Addressing newsmen in Lagos, the President of the ULC, Mr Joe Ajaero, told Ngige to clarify his statement to avoid creating tension among workers.<br />
<br />
He said that the minister’s statement that the wage would no longer be paid in September amounted to double-speak on the matter.<br />
<br />
Ajaero described the minister’s statement as unfortunate, saying that he should have consulted with members of the tripartite committee on the minimum wage before making an announcement on the wage.<br />
<br />
“We are not sure the stakeholders, who are members of the committee were consulted and this is undemocratic and lacks due process.<br />
<br />
“Our fear and worry is that the statement is laden with intentions.’’<br />
<br />
Ajaero said there was need to be sensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers, who had been facing immense hardships over the years.<br />
<br />
The labour leader said it would not be good for any government official to sabotage the interest of workers, vowing that the labour movement would not accept anything that would affect workers adversely.<br />
<br />
He assured workers that labour would continue to put pressure on government to ensure that the committee submitted its report next month. </div>

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the “Not-Too-Young-To-Run’’.<br />

The bill is for an act to alter the provisions of the constitution to reduce the age for some political offices.<br />
<br />
He also noted that noted that the National Assembly has delivered on its promise.<br />
<br />
Ekweremadu, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, on Thursday said the new amendment to the Constitution would open up the political space for the Nigerian youth.<br />
<br />
He urged them to capitalise on it to take their proper place in the scheme of things.<br />
<br />
He also urged President Buhari to also attend to other Constitution Amendment Bills awaiting his assent, describing them as critical to the good governance of the nation.<br />
<br />
“I am happy for the Nigerian youth and congratulate them on this new vista of political relevance and attainments.<br />
<br />
“We have delivered on our promise and it is my hope that the youth will capitalise on it to take their rightful place in the governance of the country. As I have always maintained, today, not tomorrow, belongs to the youth. It is theirs to organise and mobilise to take it.<br />
<br />
“I commend President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the Bill to motivate our youth to start preparations for the 2019 elections.<br />
<br />
“However, I equally urge him to assent to the remaining Bills already transmitted to him, including the Bill seeking financial autonomy for State Houses of Assembly”<br />
<br />
He assured that the National Assembly would continue to make laws that would deepen the nation’s democracy and promote good governance.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed credit for the bill.<br />
<br />
The party said the bill was pursued and sponsored by members of the PDP at the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.<br />

According to Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, “this development is indeed a democratic victory for the Nigerian youths over forces.’’<br />

Five soldiers were, Thursday, killed by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State, the Nigerian Army has said.<br />

The soldiers died while fighting the terrorists who had ambushed them in the state, the Army said.<br />
<br />
Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Texas Chukwu, in a statement released mid Thursday night, said the five soldiers died along the Pridang-Bita road in Borno after their vehicle stepped on Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs.<br />
<br />
The statement reads thus:”Troops of 271 Tasks Force Battalion deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole today Thursday 31 May 2018, while on clearance operation along Pridang – Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, fought through an ambush staged by elements of Boko Haram Terrorists.<br />
<br />
“During the fight troops ran into Improvised Explosive Device (IED) buried along Pridang – Bitta road by Boko Haram Terrorists before encountering the ambush.<br />
<br />
“In the fire fight that ensued, the gallant troops fought through the ambush, they neutralized several Boko Haram Terrorists, while others fled with gunshot wounds.<br />
<br />
“Sadly, five military personnel paid the supreme price as a result of the Improvised Explosive Device attack.<br />
<br />
“The remains of the deceased personnel have been promptly evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.'”</div>

Bursaspor defender, William Troost-Ekong has claimed that former Super Eagles’ head coach, Sunday Oliseh almost killed his career and that of Brighton centre-back, Leon Balogun, in the senior national team.<br />

Rohr’s men had their first training session on Thursday after arriving in London, at The Hive Stadium.<br />

Chelsea star, Victor Moses, who joined the team’s camp on Thursday morning, was part of the training which started at 4:30pm.<br />

Rohr split his squad into two groups comprising the possibles and the probables.<br />
<br />
The possibles had Francis Uzoho in goal, Shehu Abdullahi, William Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun and Bryan Idowu in defence, skipper John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi and Joel Obi in midfield and in the attack, Odion Ighalo, Moses and Alex Iwobi.<br />

Ikechukwu Ezenwa was in goal for the probables, with the defence comprising: Tyronne Ebuehi, Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem, Elderson Echiejile, John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa and Simeone Nwankwo.<br />

Spain gave its green light Friday to a new separatist executive in Catalonia that does not include jailed or exiled former ministers, paving the way for Madrid to end direct rule over the region.<br />

The central government last month recognised the powers of newly-elected Catalan president Quim Torra but refused to ratify his choice of councillors because four of them face charges linked to a failed independence drive, calling their nomination “a new provocation”.<br />
<br />
But earlier this week, Torra nominated a new administration which did not include them.<br />
<br />
The names were subsequently published in Friday’s edition of the official journal of the Catalan government.<br />
<br />
With Catalonia currently under direct rule by Madrid after its now-deposed leaders tried to break from Spain in October, publishing an item in the official journal can only be done with the green light of the central government.<br />
<br />
Madrid had refused to officially publish the composition of the first executive announced on May 19 by Torra.<br />
<br />
Now, the new Catalan government will be allowed to assume its duties, and when it does, Madrid’s direct rule over the wealthy, northeastern region will automatically be lifted.</div>

The Inspector of General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to declare as unconstitutional, the Senate’s insistence that he must appear for a legislative hearing in person.<br />

Idris insisted in his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/457/2018 and filed on April 30, 2018, that his personal appearance before the Senate was unnecessary because the issues for which he was invited were not personal.<br />
<br />
Our correspondent sighted the court processes on Thursday.<br />
<br />
The IGP, through his lawyer, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), who filed the suit on his behalf, joined the President of the Senate, Dr.Bukola Saraki, and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as defendants in his suit.<br />
<br />
He noted that if he was to personally honour every invitation sent to the office of the IGP, there would be no time to attend to his main responsibilities.<br />
<br />
The Senate had in a letter dated April 25, 2018, invited the IGP to appear before it in relation to the purported inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye and the killings in many parts of the country.<br />
<br />
The IGP, on April 26, refused to appear before the Senate but delegated the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) and Commissioner of Police, Kogi State to represent him at the Senate.<br />
<br />
But the Senate refused to grant an audience to the two representatives, insisting that the IGP must personally appear for the legislative hearing.<br />
<br />
The upper legislative chamber then rescheduled the meeting for May 2 and again directed that the IGP must honour its invitation in person.<br />
<br />
The IGP, in a supporting affidavit accompanying his suit, said his action of delegating his subordinates to appear before the Senate was backed by law.<br />
<br />
He said under the Constitution and Police Act, he had the power to delegate responsibilities, including directing some of his subordinates to represent him wherever he was  invited, more so that his choice of the DIG (Operations) and CP, Kogi State was on the basis that they were conversant with the issues for which he was invited.<br />
<br />
Both Saraki and the Senate, in a counter-affidavit, accused the IGP of using the court to shield himself from being scrutinised by the legislature.<br />
<br />
They stated that the IGP’s representatives were denied audience because of “the weighty issues which require clarification as they touched on the very soul of our national existence and in order to ensure fruitful and meaningful deliberations.”<br />
<br />
They prayed the court to reject the plaintiff’s prayers and dismiss the suit.<br />
<br />
Justice John Tsoho on Thursday adjourned till June 29 for the hearing of the suit.</div>

The Forum of South-South Governors on Wednesday in Port Harcourt restated its demand for restructuring and 13 per cent derivation from the Federal Government.<br />

Spokesperson for the Forum, Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, said after a one-day meeting that the demand was in the spirit and clamour for restructuring and in line with true federalism.<br />
<br />
He said that the forum also demanded for a 13 per cent derivation from the one billion dollars withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account by the Federal Government for security.<br />
<br />
He said that the demand was in accordance with the constitutional provision.<br />
<br />
Dickson said that the forum was not against the amount withdrawn by the Federal Government to fight insecurity in the country.<br />
<br />
He noted that the forum expressed support for the devolution of powers among the federating States.<br />
<br />
The forum, he said, called for the withdrawal from the National Assembly a bill on the management and administration of water resources.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) reports that Govs. Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Dickson of Bayelsa attended the meeting while Ben Ayade of Cross River was absent.</div>

Everton on Thursday appointed Marco Silva as the new manager, the Premier League club announced on their website.<br />

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach, who replaces Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park, has Premier League experience, with Watford and Hull City.<br />

Before that, Silva enjoyed trophy-winning spells with Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos having also helped Estoril climb through the ranks in his native Portugal.<br />
<br />
Everton had tried to lure him last season before taking on Allardyce, causing Silva’s departure from Watford, who complained of an “unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival”.<br />

Known as a manager who wants his teams to play attractive, attacking football, Silva believes Everton fans will be proud of what they see on the pitch next season.<br />

“I’m really proud to be the new Everton manager,” Silva told Evertontv.<br />

“I’m excited and I’m really happy to take this big challenge for us as a club and for me as a manager.<br />

With the backing of Everton’s Iranian billionaire owner Farhad Moshiri, Silva said he is ready to meet the fans’ expectations of a far more successful season in 2018-2019.<br />

“We have a lot of work to do in this next month and it is important to prepare everything in the right way,” he said.<br />

“But there will be even more important work to do from the start of pre-season into the first Premier League match of next season.<br />
<br />
“I know what our fans expect — they expect results but not only results. I want our fans to be proud when they see our team on the pitch.<br />

“I want them to feel that we are committed, that we are working hard and enjoying our football because that is important as well.<br />

The Chairman, PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Wayne Aboderin, is dead.<br />

Aboderin, according to a statement by the Aboderin Family of Kudeti in Ibadan, in Oyo state signed by Angela Emuwa, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 6.05am after a heart surgery at the First Cardiology Consultants, Ikoyi, Lagos, at the age of 60.<br />
<br />
Gbadebowale Aboderin attended the Government College, Ibadan; and trained as a pilot in the United States.<br />
<br />
A sports enthusiast and philanthropist, he was the founder and chairman of the Dolphins Female Basketball Foundation, and also a former chairman of the Lagos State Basketball Association.<br />
<br />
He was a one-time vice-president of the Nigerian Basketball Supporters Club.<br />
<br />
He is survived by his wife, Titilayo, and children.</div>

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, on Thursday fixed July 11 for ruling on the no-case submission filed by Olisa Metuh, a former Peoples Democratic Party spokesman accused of destruction of evidence.<br />

Metuh was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in January 2015 on two charges bordering on alleged destruction of evidence.<br />
<br />
The case, which was before Justice Ishaq Bello, was adjourned until July 11, with consent of counsel as the court did not sit.<br />
<br />
The case was earlier adjourned until May 31 for ruling on the no-case submission.<br />
<br />
Metuh’s counsel, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), had. on October 10, 2017, told the court that they would enter a no-case submission at the close of the prosecution’s case.<br />
<br />
Arguing the no-case submission, Ikpeazu had told the court that the prosecution had not established any case to warrant the defendant to be called to enter his defence.<br />
<br />
He said that the application was in pursuant to the provisions of sections 302 and 357 of ACJA.<br />
<br />
The counsel added that the defendant had a constitutional liberty and could not be prosecuted where he either refused to make a statement or withdraw any part of his writing in the course of making a statement.<br />
<br />
Ikpeazu said that the defendant also had a right to cancel any part of his statement voluntarily.<br />
<br />
He reminded the court that the charge by EFCC was that Metuh destroyed his statement and obstructed EFCC officials by willfully tearing his statement.<br />
<br />
Ikpeazu argued that a piece of paper not signed did not qualify as a statement by the defendant, and urged the court to discharge and acquit the defendant.<br />
<br />
However, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, urged the court to establish whether or not a prima facie case had been made against the defendant<br />
<br />
Tahir added that cancellation was different from tearing, which was obstruction; and prayed the court to call upon the defendant to enter his defence.</div>

Mr Isaac Okoroafor, the acting Director, Corporate Communications, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the apex bank resisted suggestions to float the Naira when the country was battling with economic recession.<br />

Okoroafor spoke at the Capital Chapter Congress/Dinner of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), FCT chapter, on Wednesday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Delivering a lecture titled, “Managing Public Confidence in a Period of Economic Challenge -The Role of Public Relations’’, the CBN spokesman said the bank was vindicated afterwards for rejecting the suggestion.<br />
<br />
A floating exchange rate is a regime where the currency price is set by the forex market based on supply and demand compared with other currencies.<br />
<br />
This is in contrast to a fixed exchange rate, in which the government entirely or predominantly determines the rate.<br />
<br />
“Several people both local and international made the suggestions that we float the Naira but we said no.<br />
<br />
“ We resisted the option because we felt it was a wrong option and dangerous to the economy and we are very happy we proved them wrong.<br />
<br />
“We believe we succeeded and what are doing now in to consolidate on the successes and address our failures,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
He said that crisis was unavoidable; hence the need for public relations practitioners to be proactive.<br />
<br />
Okoroafor advised the practitioners to be truthful and engage stakeholders continuously.<br />
<br />
“You do not have to wait until there is a crisis before you begin to engage; during periods of normalcy, you need to engage people; make sure you supply people with information prior to the crisis because the crisis will come one day.<br />
<br />
“ Once you engage people steadily, and crisis comes, they will be on your side because they already know the crisis will come.<br />
<br />
“If you create a level of confidence with your stakeholders, especially the media, they will readily defend you when there is crisis.’’<br />
<br />
Okoroafor said there was need for Nigeria to begin to add value to the goods it exported in order to strengthen the Naira.<br />
<br />
He said that if Nigeria remained a nation of consumers – taking from other countries and hampering local production, the Naira would continue to be weak.<br />
<br />
On his part, Dr Tayo Hastrup, Chairman, NIPR, FCT chapter, said that the decision to engage Okoroafor for the lecture was informed by his wealth of experience in public relations.<br />
<br />
He said that the CBN spokesman and his team creditably acquitted themselves in public relations when Nigeria was in recession.<br />
<br />
According to him, Nigerian economy is very important to us, we just came from recession and the CBN is very strategic agency in this country.<br />
<br />
“We decided at executive level to get somebody from the CBN, who is our member, Okoroafor.<br />
<br />
“We have the belief that as a public relations person heading the corporate communications department of CBN, he will be versatile enough to talk on the issue in question.<br />
<br />
“The nation faced some serious challenges but the strategy adopted by CBN public relations was able to douse tension and professionally handled the crisis,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Hastrup said that he believed that the lecture would boost the professional capacity of public relations practitioners in handling challenges.</div>
