The Federal Government on Saturday received no fewer than 198 Nigerians illegally residing in Saudi Arabia at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, at about 10 a.m.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this number was out of the 1,800 Nigerians living illegally in Saudi Arabia, who were given amnesty to return to the country.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that the 198 persons including women and children returned with their luggage on board a Med-View aircraft.<br />
<br />
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano received the first batch of the returnees.<br />
<br />
Mohammed Yahaya-Sani, the Consular at the Nigerian Consulate in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, who led the illegal immigrants to Nigeria, told journalists at the airport that the Federal Government sponsored their return.<br />
<br />
According to him, the illegal migrants voluntarily reported to the Nigerian Embassy to be returned to Nigeria in compliance with the three months evacuation notice issued to them by Saudi authorities, which will expire on July 24.<br />
<br />
Mr. Yahaya-Sani said contrary to speculations, the returnees were not deported, rather they voluntarily accepted the amnesty offer granted them by the Saudi authorities for illegal immigrants to leave the country.<br />
<br />
“They decided on their own to return to Nigeria. The Saudi authorities offered amnesty to all illegal immigrants to leave the country within three months,” he said.<br />
<br />
The official handed over the returnees to NEMA officials at the airport who witnessed and documented their returns before they later departed to their various towns and villages. (NAN)

<a name='more' id="more"></a>Speaking in an interview in Awka, President of Ohaneze in the state, Chief Damian Okeke said the pro-Biafra agitators should be made to realize that Igbo leaders would not support any agitation that would lead to war.<br />
<br />
Consequently, he advised that they tread softly while expressing their anger over the happenings in Nigeria. Okeke said it would be foolhardy to expect Igbo people to abandon their investment in other parts of the country. In addition, he said anybody who witnessed the Biafra War, like he did, would not want to experience another war. Nonetheless, he said the fear of war would not stop the Igbo from speaking against oppression.<br />

He said: “Anyone who is marginalized will always feel bad, but that will not make those marginalized to commit suicide. “That is why we cannot completely condemn the youths for what they are doing. If not for what they are doing, we will not be discussing with the people of Niger Delta today. Because of what they are doing, we have a better understanding with the people of the South West today.<br />
<br />
Today, the Hausa nation, the Yoruba nation, and the Igbo nation are finding a common solution to Nigeria’s problems. We cannot exist in isolation “For the first time since the end of the civil war, the governors of the states in the former Eastern Region are meeting to ensure a better Nigeria. Even those in the National Assembly are meeting, just as the people of the Middle Belt have indicated their interest to discuss with our people.<br />
<br />
“We have to admit that there is a problem in Nigeria and it is only when we acknowledge this that we will begin to find a solution. That is why we need to always speak with one voice because that is the only way we can achieve our goal. “The truth may be bitter, but the fact is that we cannot exist in isolation. I cannot stay here and order our people to abandon their investments in other parts of Nigeria and come home immediately. That will not be the solution.<br />
<br />
“What we advocate is that the rule of law must be obeyed and justice and equity ensured for peaceful co-existence in Nigeria. We agree that peace will reign in Nigeria if the right things are done. Meaning of Biafra “As far as I am concerned, we are using Biafra to ask Nigeria to do the needful because that is the vehicle we should use to get our rights. What is happening to us today has gone beyond marginalization. We should work together to get what will benefit the Igbo and the important thing is to get what belongs to us in Nigeria.<br />

“I recall when Ohaneze once asked the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, what was really the meaning of Biafra and his answer was that it is like a fully loaded trailer descending the Milikin Hill in Enugu and nobody knows where it would land. What we have in mind are equity and justice.<br />
<br />
If we get our rights in Nigeria, what else are we fighting for? “Ohaneze Ndigbo had severally made it clear that members of IPOB and MASSOB are our children.<br />
<br />
We are all working towards the betterment of Igbo nation. “I want to say that the leadership of Ohaneze, the governors of the South East states and many other Igbo elders are jointly on top of the situation of the quit notice to Ndigbo by the Arewa youths.”

Sen. Aisha Alhassan, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, on Saturday said the Chibok girls were ready for academic session in September and pleaded with abductors to release the remaining girls. Alhassan disclosed this during a lunch with the released Chibok girls and their parents in Abuja.<br />

“They will be examined academically and placed appropriately, the ones that are qualified to enter into the university will be allowed to. “The American University, Yola had indicated interest in supporting 21 of the Chibok girls. “We are also meeting with the university to support the remaining girls so that they all can be in one place,” she said. Alhassan said that the escaped 14 Chibok girls, who were released three years ago were given scholarships by the American University of Nigeria, Yola. She said that the girls were properly examined academically, adding that they started a foundation courses for them.<br />
<br />
The minister, however, pleaded for the release of the remaining Chibok girls and others in captivity, adding that the abductors should dialogue with government. Mr Reginald Briggs, the Assistant Vice President of America University, Yola, said the girls were initially traumatised but had made significant progress. “We have 24 of the Chibok girls with us, we try to keep their academic levels up by assessing them emotionally, psychologically, academically and we found out that they are at different academic levels. “They have foundation in English, Mathematics and General Knowledge and gradually we moved them to advanced stage.<br />
<br />
“They are studying difference courses such as journalism, computer science, accounting and law,” he said. Briggs said that the university was working toward supporting the 82 Chibok girls to be enrolled into the university. The Chairman of the Chibok Girls’ Parents, Mr Yakubu Nkeki said that parents of the girls were happy meeting their children and appreciated the efforts of the government. Mrs Catherine Udida, the Head of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, Office of the National Security Adviser, said that the Chibok girls were fit psychological as they had gone through various tests. She said that the girls were fully integrated, adding that initially they were shy but they now have confidence and ready to face the world.<br />

One of the Chibok girls, Miss Rhoda Peter appreciated the efforts of government and well-meaning Nigerians who had supported them. Another Chibok girl, Miss Hauwa Ntakai, who said she wants to be a medical doctor, also appreciated the government for helping her to achieve her dream. (NAN)

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has won both the Chairmanship and Councillorship elections in Ward A6 polling Unit 033 located in Ogunmodede College, Papa Epe where the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode voted this morning.<br />

At the end of counting of the votes cast, the results showed that the APC polled a total of 299 votes for the Chairmanship election as against one polled by the Labour Party and zero vote polled respectively by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party.<br />

For the Councillorship election in the unit, the APC polled a total of 293 votes as against One polled by Labour Party and zero polled by PDP.<br />
<br />
In the second polling unit in the ward, APC polled 298 votes for the Chairmanship election as against zero vote polled by the PDP and Labour. Also in the councillorship election, APC polled 300 votes while the PDP, Labour and Accord Party all polled zero vote.

THE DETERIORATING MIND OF FEMI ADESINA<br />

I am convinced that Femi Adesina has now finally lost his mind. In his latest essay he compared Buhari to David. What on earth is Davidic about Buhari? David was a Spirit-filled believer and a heroic and courageous child of God whilst Buhari is a son of perdition and a tyrannical servant of satan.<br />

Femi also said Buhari could have “cut off the heads” of his opponents, meaning he could have had them assassinated. Gosh. Poor Femi. He has just made a cardinal spiritual blunder the consequences of which I have no doubt that he will deeply regret. I knew that he was frustrated but I never knew he was a man of blood. I never knew that he and his leader believed in murder as a tool of governance.<br />
<br />
God will see to it that they pay a terrible price for even thinking of taking the life of their detractors and political enemies both in this life and in the next. The truth is that God alone gives and takes life and whether they like it or not He guards His own jealously.<br />
<br />
No-one is intimidated by Femi’s implicit threat. He ought to be mindful of the fact that whilst he and his associated are planning to take someone else’s precious life they may end up losing their own. Examples of that are replete in the Holy Bible. Abishai and David’s other strong men were courageous and righteous men who undertook a noble cause, shed the blood of evil men and fought against tyranny. That is not the case with Buhari’s cabal.<br />
<br />
They are the opposite. They are the darkness that seeks the darkness. They prey on the weak, they destroy the young and they slay the old, the vulnerable and the weary. Buhari has no Abishais around him.<br />
<br />
He has no Joabs and no Prophet Samuels either. He only has Absaloms, Hamans, Judas, Dalilas and Ahitophels. That is the tragedy and the weakness of his Presidency. That plus the fact that he does not fear God and he does not respect the rights of the Nigerian people. Finally Femi wrote “when Buhari returns home some people will bury their heads in shame”.<br />
<br />
He is wrong. The truth is that when Buhari returns home some people will prop him up and pretend that he is well enough to be President until he falls sick and goes back abroad again. It is called “cors..,” and it is defined as the rulership of the living by the dead.<br />
<br />
Instead of telling us that his principal can kill us all Femi should consider his many failings and fluctuating health and advise him to resign honorably.<br />
<br />
That is what a real believer and a true man of honor would counsel his erring and ailing boss to do and not try to intimidate those of us that are in opposrion with blatent, vulgar and bullish threats of assasination. The path of blood is a dark and unpredictable one. I advise Femi not to take it.<br /></blockquote>

The leadership of Ojobo, host community to Shell Nigeria Plc in Burutu Council Area of Delta State, has appealed to the oil giant to provide basic amenities for the oil-rich community. The appeal came during an event to mark a successful community leadership election/swearing-in held about a month ago.<br />

Ojobo had been known for electoral violence over the years. The newly elected chairman, Chief Etito E. Ekolo, thanked the people of the community for the trust reposed in him and pledged to work hard for the well-being of the community.<br />
<br />
Ekolo also pledged to work for peace and unity of the community to ensure that the prevalent electoral violence in the community became a thing of the past. He decried the plight of the community being an oil producing community for decades without having access to good living conditions and urged Shell, Delta State and the federal government to do justice by providing electricity, potable water and a link road to the community.<br />
<br />
In his speech, the traditional ruler of Ojobo, Chief Thompson Brisibe, said that Shell started operations in the community since 1971, saying the community had been struggling for electricity and other amenities since then. He called on Shell and the federal government to attend to the plight of the people, stressing that the nation had been benefiting from the community’s oil for over 45 years with nothing to show for it.

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu on Saturday said that eligible voters in Lagos State who did not cast their votes in the local government elections would not be justified to complain against local councils. Oluremi, representing Lagos Central, said this in Lagos in an interview with journalists in her residence in Bourdillon, Ikoyi.<br />

The wife of a former Governor of the State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bola Tinubu, spoke with newsmen after casting her vote. “This is the time to show solidarity for the government; we believe that this government is working; this is the time that everybody should perform his/her civic duty,’’ she said.<br />

The senator said that voting was a way to hold governments accountable. “It is not for you but for your generation yet unborn so that things can be put in place.<br />
<br />
“We have set the standard in Lagos; every elected candidate does not have any choice but to work,’’ she said. She said that she had been working as a people’s representative for the past six years and would continue to do so till the end of her tenure. Mrs Tinubu commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for efforts in conducting the polls. “LASIEC has done well; security personnel are on ground ensuring that there is peace and order.’’<br />
<br />
Also, the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, who voted at Ward E, Olonade Street, Yaba LGA, commended voters who turned out in spite of the downpour. “Voters have shown support for democracy by coming to vote in spite of the rain. “Starting the election behind schedule is understandable due to the downpour; it is impressive. “I believe that APC will carry the day,’’ he said.<br />

Mr Jide Jimoh, representing Lagos Mainland in the House of Representatives, told journalists that the elections had been peaceful. “The election process is fantastic so far, and I commend the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for that. “I won’t want to make any judgment on LASIEC because we are just starting. Taking off does not matter; it is landing that is the most important thing. “We have taken off; at the end of the day, we will see the result. I expect a positive result,’’ he said. (NAN)

The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Ayotunde Phillips has attributed the delayed take off of the voting process in Saturday ‘s council polls in some parts of the state to heavy downpour.<br />

Speaking with newsmen while monitoring some polling units in Yaba area of the state, she said the downpour affected the movements of electoral materials.<br />

She appealed to those who were yet to vote on the affected area to exercise patience as the commission was addressing the situation.<br />

The chairman assured that all eligible voters would vote, as materials were being deployed to the affected areas.<br />

Philips said the commission would allow some people to vote beyond the 3pm deadline if there was the need to do so.<br />

“The delay in the delivery of materials in some areas, hence voting, is caused by the heavy downpour.<br />
<br />
“However, we are addressing the situation and we are assuring that everybody in the affected areas will vote .<br />
<br />
“Once people have been accredited and are on queue, they will be allowed to vote even after 3pm. “she said.<br />
<br />
She expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct in most areas.<br />
<br />
Phillips said there were few incidences of violence in some areas but said security agents had quelled the situation.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) correspondent who went with the LASIEC boss on the monitoring reports that that the turnout was low in some areas visited.<br />
<br />
At polling unit 028, ward G in Yaba, out of the 644 registered voters, only 82 had voted as of 1pm of the visit.<br />
<br />
The polling clerk in the unit, Mrs Mosunmola Taiwo, said the downpour contributed to the slow takeoff and low participation.<br />
<br />
She, however, expressed hope more people would turn out for the exercise before 3pm deadline.<br />
<br />
The situation was however different at polling unit 004 in the same ward as the Presiding Officer, Mr Bishi Usman said the turnout was impressive.<br />
<br />
“The exercise is going on fine. People are coming out. I have exhausted the first booklet; I am on the second voting booklet. It is so far, so good,” he said.</div>

After sweeping changes to the Nations Cup this week, the Central African nation will now have to prepare for eight more teams than expected.<br />

“I spoke this morning with our country’s hierarchy and the decision is that Cameroon is ready to host,” Tombi A Roko Sidiki told BBC Sport.<br />
<br />
After reports of slow progress in Cameroon, Morocco is keen to step in.<br />

“Morocco will not hesitate for a second to respond favourably to any invitation to host this Nations Cup,” said the country’s FA president Faouzi Lekjaa.<br />
<br />
Caf has announced that its inspection team will visit Cameroon in September with the country having had to deny reports its preparations were behind schedule.<br />
<br />
Morocco was set to host the 2015 Nations Cup until it lost the finals following concerns over the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.<br />
<br />
The Moroccan capital Rabat hosted this week’s symposium on African football, where decisions such as moving the Nations Cup from January-February to June-July were taken.<br />
<br />
This was among a raft of changes overseen by Ahmad, the Malagasy who was elected president of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in March.<br />
<br />
However, Sidiki is not impressed by the Moroccan manoeuvres with regard to the next Nations Cup.<br />
<br />
“There are some countries who would like to host this competition but they should keep quiet and think about other editions and not 2019 because Cameroon will be ready,” he rallied.<br />
<br />
Moving the Nations Cup to June allows Cameroon an extra five months to prepare for the finals.<br />
<br />
Cameroon says it supports the decision to expand the Africa Cup of Nations to 24 teams<br />
<br />
Sidiki said he backed the expansion to 24 teams, a decision which Caf executive committee member Amaju Pinnick says will triple the African body’s income.<br />
<br />
Despite the presence of debutants Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in recent years, Sidiki believes the expansion will open up the finals to more teams that have never qualified.<br />
<br />
“Cameroon has always been participating but in life, you don’t need to see only your position as you should think about those who are dreaming each year to be part of this famous competition.<br />
<br />
“This is why we think this is a right and good decision.”<br />
<br />
The country’s national team are the reigning African champions.</div>

Greg Doran, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, suggested that the playwright’s ‘outsider’ perspective might offer clues about his sexuality.<br />
<br />
He added that Victorian academics were embarrassed by the possibility of England’s most celebrated bard being gay, so they ‘whitewashed’ his sonnets.<br />
<br />
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Doran said: ‘I guess a growing understanding of Shakespeare as I have worked with him over the many years that I have, makes me realise that his perspective is very possibly that of an outsider.<br />
<br />
‘It allows him to get inside the soul of a black general, a Venetian jew, an Egyptian queen or whatever and perhaps that outsider perspective has something to do with his sexuality.’<br />
<br />
He added that clues can be found in the 154 sonnets that Shakespeare wrote, which focus on themes like love and beauty.<br />
<br />
Out of the 154, 126 are addressed to a young man.<br />
<br />
Doran accused Victorian academics of heterosexualising the playwright and changing the pronouns in his sonnets.<br />
<br />
He said: ‘It wasn’t somehow kosher for the great national bard to possibly have affectations for his own sex and therefore that process, to kind of whitewash through the sonnets.<br />
<br />
‘I am just aware of how many times Shakespeare has gay characters, and how sometimes those gay characters are not played as gay, and I think in the 21st century that’s no longer acceptable.’<br />
<br />
Debate about Shakespeare’s sexuality has raged for years, despite records showing the bard married at 18 and fathered three children with his wife Anne Hathaway.<br />
<br />
Academics and scholars clashed about the issue in the Times Literary Supplement three years ago.<br />
<br />
Sir Brian Williams provoked the argument by claiming that sonnet 116 appeared in a ‘primarily homosexual context’.<br />
<br />
But Sir Stanley Wells, a Shakespeare scholar at the University of Birmingham, told the Telegraph: ‘Shakespeare was certainly not exclusively gay.<br />
<br />
‘But he was pretty certainly bisexual and actively so. The strongest evidence comes from the sonnets, in some of which he writes of a triangular relationship with a man and a woman.’</div>

Early morning rain on Saturday prevented many voters from coming out to vote in the Lagos council polls in Eredo and Ikotun/Igando Local Council Development Areas.<br />

Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the election, report that there was a low turnout of voters at some polling units.<br />
<br />
NAN also observed that there was no presence of security personnel at Ward A Units 2, 7, 8, 10, 16, 18 and 19 in Ilara community as at 9.30 a.m.<br />
<br />
However, security men mounted a barricade at the main junction as the Police engaged in stop and search.<br />
<br />
An electoral officer in the area attributed the low turnout to the rain, adding that voters may still come out as soon as the rain subsided.<br />
<br />
At Ward 037 in Ikotun/Igando LCDA, a few voters, majority of them old people, were at many of the polling units.<br />
<br />
Mrs Yemisi Dosunmu, a 57-year- old caterer, said that the apathy by youths was not good for our democracy.<br />
<br />
She said it was important for the younger generation to understand the importance of voting.<br />
<br />
“I came all the way from Egbe to vote here because this is where I registered when I was living here.<br />
<br />
“That is to show you how important this election is to me; our voting age children (youths) need to understand that they<br />
have the power to elect leaders of their choice.<br />
<br />
“As citizens, it is an obligation and our vote is the only power we have against bad governance, the power lies with us; we need to educate our youths,’’ she said.<br />
<br />
Also, a 43-year-old engineer, Dauda Ojo, told NAN that the poor turnout showed that people lacked the understanding of their<br />
voting power.<br />
<br />
“Since I started voting, this turnout is one of the poorest, we cannot achieve much if we keep showing apathy towards the election of office holders,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
NAN also reports that some food vendors at Eredo LCDA took advantage of their proximity to the polling units to make brisk business.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Mr Olusoda Adedeji, the Electoral Officer, Eredo LCDA, has assured that the outcome of the election would be credible in spite of the initial low turnout of voters due to the rainfall.<br />
<br />
Adedeji said adequate security and logistics had been put in place in the five wards and 85 units in the area to ensure a hitch-free election with more than 185 personnel deployed for the exercise.<br />

I am sure my readers were rudely shocked out of their reverie by the eponymously named Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, who announced to a bewildered nation that the Federal Government, whose spokesman he is, is making preparations to stop Nollywood and Nigerian pop stars from shooting movies and videos abroad.<br />

Said Lai Mohammed, “This government has agreed that henceforth, whatever we consume in Nigeria in terms of music and films, must be made in Nigeria. We cannot continue to go to South Africa or any other country to produce our films and then send them back to be consumed in Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
It was perhaps lost on Lai Mohammed as he spoke that his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was elected in Nigeria by Nigerians is not being consumed in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
And while we were still grappling with the absurdity of Lai Mohammed’s comments, his colleague in office, Kemi Adeosun, added to the comedy that this government has become by announcing that the Buhari administration plans to tax beggars!<br />
<br />
According to the honorable (?) minister, “You are supposed to pay taxes even if your means of income is begging.”<br />
<br />
This is the reason why I have said that a polytechnic graduate like Kemi Adeosun is not sufficiently qualified to handle our complicated economy! It doesn’t matter if the polytechnic she graduated from is in the U.K.<br />
<br />
In civilized nations, they place beggars on social security, but in Nigeria our polytechnic graduate finance minister wants them taxed! Last year, President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter got married in a lavish ceremony which attracted several private jets to Abuja. Rather than beggars, Kemi Adeosun can pursue their owners for taxes!<br />
<br />
President Muhammadu Buhari is in a U.K. hospital. His children study at U.K. schools. His wife shops at U.K. stores. He and his family are more U.K. oriented than they are Nigerian oriented. Yet it is Nollywood shooting a few movies abroad that Lai Mohammed complains about. I am told that the Federal Road Safety Corp wants to perform psychiatric evaluation on reckless drivers. The FRSC should not limit its psychiatric test to reckless drivers. They should also start performing them on reckless ministers like Lai Mohammed and Kemi Adeosun!<br />
<br />
And when given the chance to explain himself two days after making his faux pas, Lai Mohammed doubled down on his comments and insisted that TV/radio programming meant to be consumed in Nigeria must be made in Nigeria, saying inter alia “This is because we cannot continue to develop the economies of the other parts of the world from the sweat of Nigerians and at the expense of the Nigerian economy”.<br />
<br />
Lai Mohammed forgets that our Presidential jet has been languishing at London’s Stansted Airport for over 80 days and accruing daily charges in the thousands of U.K. pounds per day.<br />
<br />
As at today, the amount of charges our Presidential jet has accrued at London’s Stansted Airport could have paid 2,000 Nigerian workers going by the lowest parking rate charged by Stabsted. Why is the jet even there? This joke of a Presidency in their statement justified parking the Presidential jet at London’s Stansted by saying it was for ‘prestige’ reasons.<br />
<br />
The Presidency says the Presidential jet is parked at London’s Stansted for ‘prestige’. The British Prime Minister has no official jet. Maybe she has no ‘prestige’ even though Britain makes Jets and Nigeria does not!<br />
<br />
Is this not a case of Nigeria’s tax payer monies being used to “develop the economies of the other parts of the world from the sweat of Nigerians and at the expense of the Nigerian economy”, to borrow Lai Mohammed’s words?<br />
<br />
Lai Mohammed who now wants to stop Nollywood from making videos abroad, forgot that his All Progressives Congress relied on foreign consultants to win the 2015 elections!<br />
<br />
They go abroad to win elections. They go abroad to  educate their children. They go abroad for healthcare. But they do not want Nollywood to go abroad to make money! Perhaps Lai Mohammed wants to reduce Nollywood stars to beggars so they are eligible for taxation by Kemi Adeosun!<br />
<br />
Since we the citizens have not complained that President Muhammadu Buhari is receiving medical treatment abroad should the Buhari administration now complain that we make movies abroad? Lai Mohammed should not provoke us.<br />
<br />
The Financial Times of London called our President a “frequent London resident” in their recent Oped wherein they stated that he has done ‘nothing’ to improve the Nigerian economy, yet his government is complaining that they will stop our movie makers and artists from making movies and videos abroad.<br />
<br />
According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, Nigerians (mostly government officials) spend $1 billion annually on medical tourism while less than 1% of that is spent on shooting movies and videos abroad. Lie Mohammed should get his priorities right!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I am even thinking that since Lai Mohammed does not want Nollywood to make movies abroad, perhaps Nollywood should just contract the making of films abroad to President Muhammadu Buhari and his family. After all, they are always abroad!<br />
<br />
And those people complaining about the President spending much time in the U.K. misunderstand Lai. It is okay for the President to go abroad at public expense but not okay for Nollywood to do the same at their own personal expense!<br />
<br />
The spokesman of a President who spends more time in London than Nigeria has the guts to condemn Nollywood for making movies abroad. What a comedic administration!<br />
<br />
And the comedy continues!<br />

When Garba Shehu says that the Jonathan administration increased the activities of terrorists, he betrays a very shallow grasp of history which I will now prove with the benefit of some historical facts.<br />
<br />
When the Jonathan administration imposed a state of emergency in certain local governments in the Northeast of Nigeria to contain terrorists, it was precisely Muhammadu Buhari that said on Monday the 3rd of June 2013 that ‘the military offensive against Boko Haram is anti North’.<br />
<br />
Again, after the Jonathan administration banned Boko Haram in 2013, it was precisely Lai Mohammed, President Buhari’s current minister for information, who on Monday the 10th of June, 2013 said that banning Boko Haram was unconstitutional and that “the proscription stifles the press and tampers with the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.”<br />
<br />
So it is therefore rich for the Buhari administration to start making these claims against the Jonathan government.<br />
<br />
It may be that Garba Shehu is not aware that this administration has lost any credibility it has especially as regards the anti terror war.<br />
<br />
On Thursday the 24th of December, 2015 President Muhammadu Buhari told the world that Boko Haram was ‘technically defeated’ and gave himself a pat on the back after claiming that the terror group had lost its capacity to conduct  “conventional attacks”.<br />
<br />
Since that time, Boko Haram has attacked military barracks and military formations multiple times as reported in the media.<br />
<br />
Since that time, there has been an upsurge in suicide attacks with more than 30 attacks reported in the media. In the last week alone there have been three such suicide attacks with almost 20 deaths, according to media reports.<br />
<br />
There has also been attacks on military and police convoys with Boko Haram terrorists releasing a video this week of several women it says it kidnapped from a police convoy.<br />
<br />
Just two days ago (Thursday, July 20, 2017), the US State Department released a statement indicating that 75% of all global deaths from terrorism in 2016 originated from Nigeria and four other nations!<br />
<br />
Nigerians may want to note that it was under the Buhari administration that the World Economic Forum on Tuesday June 20, 2017 listed Nigeria as the fifth most dangerous country in the world because instances of Fulani Herdsmen terrorism are so rampant and continue with impunity.<br />
<br />
Fulani herdsmen operating in Nigeria were also named the fourth most deadly terrorists group in the world by the Global Terrorism Index on Wednesday November 18, 2015. This is not surprising in a situation where a governor, who happens to be a close confidante of President Muhammadu Buhari, confessed to giving Fulani Herdsmen money.<br />
<br />
It may also be recalled that on February 2, 2017 the US Congress cited Nigeria “as the most dangerous place for Christians in the world and that impunity for those responsible for the killing of Christians in the country seems to be widespread.”<br />
<br />
All these are proof positive that not only has Boko Haram not been defeated, they have metastasized under Buhari and indeed other terrorist groups have become emboldened to expand their activity nationwide.<br />
<br />
Nigerians will remember that the Jonathan administration was able to crush Boko Haram in the first quarter of 2015 which was why the 2015 elections were able to hold throughout the entire Northeast of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The question that Nigerians may want to ask is if elections can hold in all areas of Borno state today. The answer to that question will show Who between President Buhari and former President Jonathan really defeated Boko Haram.<br />

Some of the voters and party agents, however, said there was no cause of alarm as everyone had conducted themselves peacefully so far.<br />
<br />
The All Progressives Congress agent at Unit 048, Mustapha Kamar, and his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart at the unit, Mrs. Chinwe Ezejioha, expressed satisfaction with the voters’ turnout, adding that they were not worried with the absence of security agents.<br />
<br />
“We are brothers; the community is peaceful,” the APC agent said.<br />
<br />
The Baale of Orisumbare Kingdom in Alimosho LGA, High Chief Akeeb Rauf, also said the community was a peaceful one.<br />
<br />
He said, “I have confidence in my people. But I believe the police are coming. It’s a peaceful community.”<br />
<br />
The Baale, however, reprimanded some youths, taking advantage of restricted vehicular movement, to play soccer on the road. He warned that he would not intervene if they were arrested by policemen.<br />
Party agents at units 0020, 049, 074 and 075 where there were also no security agents said they were not worried because they considered the election a neighbourhood affair, where everyone is known to everybody.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Reacting, the management of Keystone Bank explained its position on the issue.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Keystone Bank noted: “In response to the news making the rounds that the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had made an order directing Keystone Bank Limited to remit the sum of $17m allegedly illegally kept in its custody to the TSA, we wish to state that Keystone Bank has never illegally hidden any amount of money belonging to the Federal Government or any of its agencies.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Details of all Federal Government funds in custody of Keystone Bank had always been fully disclosed to all relevant Federal Government agencies and at no time did Keystone Bank collude or ‎conspire with any official of the Federal Government to disobey the Federal Government directives on the TSA”.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The lender informed its stakeholders that it would not conduct itself in breach of the laws or policies of the government, including the TSA policy.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We are taking appropriate steps to respond to the issues raised in the Court Order”, the bank added.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Similarly, Fidelity Bank Plc has denied any wrongdoing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Charles Aigbe, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications at the bank, said since the commencement of the TSA policy, all TSA related accounts held by the bank were fully disclosed to the authorities.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We do not have any TSA related account with a balance of $24.5m in Fidelity Bank which has not been remitted to the authorities,” Aigbe said in a statement.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“This matter is coming to us as a surprise. We are therefore reaching out to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to ascertain which account or parastatal they are referring to with a view to carrying out a detailed reconciliation.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Bola Atta, UBA Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications, in a statement insisted that the bank was not owing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">It reads “Our attention has been drawn to the order of the Federal High Court in Lagos directing that seven (7) commercial banks, including UBA Plc, temporarily remit a total of $793,200,000 allegedly hidden in contravention of the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account policy pending the determination of the suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation on behalf of the Federal Government.</div>

We hereby emphasise that none of such funds are currently in the Bank’s books. (Reuters/NAN) The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Friday said thousands of Nigerian migrant girls brought to Italy were in great danger of being forced into prostitution in Europe.<br />

The number of female Nigerians, many of them minors, often naive about their fate at the hands of traffickers, arrived by sea in Italy surged over the past three years from 1,454 in 2014 to 11,000 in 2016.<br />
<br />
The organisation’s spokesman, Flavio Di Giacomo, said at a news briefing in Geneva that some 4,000 Nigerian girls had arrived so far in 2017.<br />
<br />
The UN agency had said that based on data collected at landing sites, it was estimated that 80 per cent of the girls were “potential victims” of trafficking as sex workers.<br />
<br />
According to Giacomo, the girls are often told the trip is free.<br />
<br />
“These girls, who are increasingly younger every year, are brought to Italy and to Europe for sexual exploitation.<br />
<br />
“They are taken by traffickers and then they are forced to be prostitutes in the streets in Italy.<br />
<br />
“And sometimes, as far as we know, these girls are also sent to other European countries such as Spain, Germany, France and Austria.<br />
<br />
“Many of the Nigerian girls are from poor families in Edo, who are psychologically manipulated during a voodoo ritual before leaving,’’ Di Giacomo said.<br />
<br />
According to him, they are accompanied by a madam-linked to the traffickers on the long journey through Niger and Libya.<br />
<br />
“The increasing number of minors arriving really do not have any idea even what prostitution is, what sex is.<br />
<br />
“But, many of them understand the real purpose of this journey because many times they are forced to prostitute themselves in Niger, in Libya especially, in brothels there.<br />
<br />
“So they understand they are not going to work as hairdressers.<br />
<br />
“IOM officials try to intercept the Nigerian girls at landing points and inform them about the prostitution ring and their right to protection,’’ Di Giacomo said.<br />
<br />
He said that the agency which had helped those who decided to flee the networks, reported the cases of 425 girls in 2016 to police.<br />
<br />
“A few days ago, we had the story of this young girl, a 17-year-old girl.<br />
<br />
“She has been told she was going to work at a hair salon; she didn’t have any idea she was going to be forced to prostitute herself.<br />
<br />
“It was only when she arrived she found out that it was not real.<br />
<br />
“The job was a lie and she was forced to become a prostitute, which was the only way to pay off the debt of the journey.<br />
<br />
“She was forced to be out on the streets for 12 hours a day.’’

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to Onaiyekan, only a fool will expect Buhari to change every situation in Nigeria for good.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He stressed that real change took longer time to be achieved.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He, however, expressed the fear that Nigerians were no longer as enthusiastic about the All Progressives Congress (APC) government as they were two years ago, because they had hoped that the change that was promised them would be faster in coming.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The cleric maintained that if Nigerian electorates could vote out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in 2015, the current APC government should know that they too can be voted out in 2019.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Onaiyekan told DAILY SUN: “The reality is there. It is only a fool who will think that a change of government would change everything for good.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“It will take time. But you see, it takes time doesn’t mean that you will sit and do nothing. Like I said, we need time. People will patiently give you time when they perfectly see the line you are following and if they can follow the line you are following and they see the line in the right direction, they will be patient.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I am afraid that the reason why many Nigerians were hopeful two years ago are no longer precisely because they had expected that things would move faster than what it is.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The question about whether it is a failure of those who rule depends on how you look at it. But what I will say is that we should give them the benefit of the doubt that they are doing their best, and that is giving them benefit of doubt because they are people who think that they are doing their best.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“But suppose they are doing their best, then we won’t complain. But the fact is, if this is their best, then their best is not good enough. But isn’t it why democracy is very good; why democracy has terms of office?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“In another two years, they will face us and we will mark their exams of either pass them or fail them.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“And if the Nigerian electorate were able to vote out the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) government, I am sure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) people should know that they too can be voted out.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Will they be voted out in 2019? I don’t know. It depends on what the situation will be in 2019. In order words, it is possible for a lot of things to change between now and 2019 in such a way that they wouldn’t want this thing to continue.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“But if by 2019 a lot of Nigerians are not satisfied, they will try another group or party which I think was the right situation in 2015. We will continue to try.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The Cardinal further declared that the nation was in dire need of reorganization.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said the Federal Government needed to urgently look at the various agitations across the length and breadth of the country and chart a way forward.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Onaiyekan added that engaging the nation in another conference or a committee to look into similar past conferences was not a bad idea only if it would meet the yearnings of Nigerians</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said: “A few things have been happening of recent which is indicating that things are more difficult to sustain. When you combine all these phenomena, you get a general picture of a nation that is very fragile and of the need to seriously address certain undermining and abiding causes of disturbance, dissatisfaction amongst our people.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Let me just mention a few of those phenomena: first, there is a call for secession from the Southeast, which is the Biafra issue. Then we have had a call for secession from the Niger Delta who are completely dissatisfied with the way the Nigeria government is treating them and in whose land much of our foreign reserve is acquired. Then we should not forget too that even the Boko Haram phenomenon started off as a revolt against the status quo in this country. Finally, the statement and utterances of a group that nobody knew about before, that call themselves Arewa youths, who made a statement that has gathered momentum on its own, namely: giving a quit notice to the Igbos to leave within a given time.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Each of these ones, on their own affair appears like a joke. But when you combine them all together, they indicate that the country needs to reorganize itself well. When people talk of restructuring, the only thing I can get from it is that we have a country that needs to be reorganized.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“And if you are talking on that line, I think everybody in Nigeria will agree that Nigeria, as it stands now, is not a perfect country. Things have to change. The discussion is generally not so easy. Also, because one man’s meat could also be another man’s poison, the changes that some people want, maybe is not the kind of changes other people want. So, how do we handle this?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“This is where I believe the government should look at all these ideas that are coming out; Suggestions that are of how best to run this country in such a way that people will have a sense of belonging.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Then the feeling of an institutional injustice will be removed. We have gone through this before on issues of how Nigeria should be studied in various constitutional conferences. And some of those congresses, the results have been kept in idleness.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“If we want to really face this now, it is wise not to re-invent the wheel, but to go back again to some of the ideas that have popped up before and see which of them can be useful.”</div>

Downpour which began at 5 a.m. in many parts of Lagos State left many areas flooded and affected early commencement of voting in the local government polls.<br />

The rain, accompanied with thunderstorms, lasted for more than two hours, confining many residents to their apartments, until it later subsided.<br />
<br />
The flooding of the roads compelled road users to drive against traffic in some areas as people rushed to beat the 7a.m. restriction of movement time.<br />
<br />
At the Berger end of Lagos-Ibadan expressway, many motorists trying to get out of Lagos, apart from contending with the rain, were caught up in the restriction of movement time which took off at 7.00 a.m, causing a heavy traffic gridlock.<br />
<br />
In Badagry, only few voters were at some polling units where security personnel, electoral officers and materials were on ground by 8a.m..<br />
<br />
At Polling Units 007, 008 and 009 in Ward A, Badagry Local Government, voters were seen by 8a.m, while at Polling Unit 8 in Ward B, few voters got accredited and began voting by 8.25a.m. .<br />
<br />
Only two voters were at Polling Unit 007 in Ward D at 8.30am.<br />
<br />
Mrs Verona Chike, the Polling Officer in the unit, blamed the low turnout on the downpour.<br />
<br />
“I am sure that more voters will come out as soon as the rain stops,” she told NAN.<br />
<br />
However, in some areas of Ikotun/ Igando Local Council Development Area, electoral officers and materials had yet to arrive as at 9.30a.m, with only agents of political parties at some poling units visited by then.<br />
<br />
In Ward B, Unit 005, on Apapa Road, in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, electoral officers arrived at 9.25 a.m. shortly after the rain stopped in the area.<br />
<br />
In the Alimosho Local Government, NAN correspondent reports that the premises of the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat was a beehive of activities as several commercial buses were being loaded with electoral materials and officials at 9:30 am.<br />
<br />
NAN observed that vehicles carrying the materials escorted by security operatives began filing out of the LG compound which doubles as the LASIEC secretariat at 9:45 am.<br />
<br />
Mr Bakare Olagoke, the Electoral Officer of the Alimosho Local Government branch of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), told NAN that the rain delayed the process.<br />
<br />
“We are leaving now. It is heavy rain and only God saved us that the communication mast did not fall on our office or anyone because the rain was too heavy,” he said.<br />

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina has described President Muhammadu Buhari as “a reformed Democrat, a pious man’’ who will never move against those calling him all sorts of names in the past two years.<br />

According to the presidential aide, the descendants of Shimei are the evil wishers, the hate monger, and those who spend their days conjecturing tragedy for leadership.<br />

“President Buhari has tolerated people who have called him all sorts of names in the past two years. If he didn’t move against them directly, he could have allowed many Abishais to move against them, “and take off their heads.”<br />

“But not our President, a reformed Democrat, a pious man, who has resolved to leave the people suffused by hatred unto God.’’<br />

Adesina attributed the “devilish’’ activities of the Nigerian Shimei to the outcome of the 2015 presidential election.<br />

On Friday the Guinean President, Alpha Condé, ordered 24-hour fervent prayers for President Buhari, who is currently on medical vacation in London.<br />

‘‘The fact that America can produce a Trump in this day and age, it means Americans are as human as we are,’‘ he was quoted to have said.<br />
<br />
The octogenarian who ruled Nigeria in 1976-79– first as a military ruler and then a civilian leader in 1999-2007 said he was happy about the turn of events in the U.S.<br />
<br />
‘‘I am not justifying what African leaders are doing. If our leaders are doing wrong, we should say that they are doing wrong. Trump has come so that America can be humbled, and we can also learn that lesson,’‘ he added.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo’s comment was made during an event earlier this week at the French Embassy in Pretoria, the News24 portal reports.<br />
<br />
The event in question was the launch of the French version of a book titled ‘Making Africa Work.’ The book described as ‘‘A trenchant analysis of the continent’s economic fault lines and a handbook of best practices to redress them,’‘ was authored by Greg Mills, Jeffrey Herbst, Olusegun Obasanjo and Dickie Davis.<br />

According to him, even though Africa still needed foreign direct investment, it was time for the continent to show the rest of the world that it can take charge of its own future. ‘‘Nobody can do it for us, and it is all of us, and if we do it, we will get it right,’‘ he added.<br />
<br />
Before the APC came to power in 2015, the current opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had ruled Nigeria since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999. The PDP’s first leader was Obasanjo, who had two four year terms.<br />
<br />
His plan to extend his stay in power was stiffly opposed and he eventually handed over to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP. Obasanjo is a regular election observer on the continent, especially for the Commonwealth.<br />
<br />
Trump took office in January this year after winning hotly contested elections in November last year. He beat former first lady and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, to make it to the White House with his mantra to ‘Make America Great Again.’<br />

Bayern brought on James Rodriguez and reported Milan target Renato Sanches at the break and began to build some sustained pressure, Thomas Muller stinging the palms of Gianluigi Donnarumma with a strike from 25 yards out.<br />

Bonucci came on to a rapturous reception with just under half an hour to play, but Bayern's possession led to little more than a chance for Corentin Tolisso that ended up in the side-netting.<br />

The Bundesliga champions were looking resigned to their loss and Calhanoglu took full advantage with five minutes left to play, the Turkey international collecting Gustavo Gomez's pass, drifting infield from the left and blasting low past Fruchtl before a single Bayern challenge had been attempted.<br />
