Four footballers have been killed after an explosion, believed to have been caused by a bomb, ripped through their bus on Friday in Somalia.
NDTV reports that ten players from the Jubaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry club in Somalia were heading to a game at the Kismayo City Stadium in the southern part of the country when the blast occurred.
“The players were riding in a bus when the explosion went off, presumably inside the vehicle. There are investigations going on, but we presume the device was planted onto the bus,” said police officer, Mohamed Sadiq.
Sadiq added that four football players were killed and five others sustained injuries.

“I saw the burning bus and three dead bodies of the players – this was horrible because football players are not politicians,” an eyewitness, Said Adan said.
Meanwhile, there was no instant claim of responsibility for the bomb blast in Kismayo, the capital of the southern state of Jubaland, which borders Kenya.
Jubaland was the first state to commence voting this week in long-delayed national elections in Somalia that the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab jihadist group has threatened to interrupt.
The extremists group have been fighting to overthrow the federal government since 2007 and frequently attack government, security and civilian targets.

Villarreal have suffered a major injury blow ahead of their UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea on August 11.
The LaLiga side confirmed in a statement on Friday night that midfielder Dani Parejo suffered muscle damage ahead of the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea.
Parejo was stretchered off in Villarreal’s pre-season friendly draw against Levante on Thursday.

Olympics organisers on Saturday reported 21 new cases of COVID-19 linked to the Tokyo Games.
The new cases have brought the total number of infections since the start of July to 241.
The number was lower than Friday’s total of 27, which was the highest daily total of the Games so far. 
No athletes were among the new cases.

Athletes who have tested positive and have been forced to miss their events include German cyclist Simon Geschke and US pole vault world champion Sam Kendricks.
Twenty-three athletes have so far tested positive.
The Japanese government had on Friday lengthened the state of emergency for the Games host city and extended the measure to other nearby prefectures amid a sharp rise in infections.

Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford, has admitted he may have opted to undergo shoulder surgery instead of going with the England squad to Euro 2020, had he known he “wouldn’t play a significant role”.
In a lengthy social media post, Rashford hit out at critics who labelled him as “selfish”, for choosing to join the Three Lions’ squad and delaying his operation.
Rashford is optimistic he will play again before the end of October, but could miss United’s first 11 games of the season in the Premier League and Champions League, as well as England’s next five World Cup qualifiers.
The decision to have an operation was made following talks between the 23-year-old and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this week.

Rashford wrote: “In hindsight, if I had known (sic) I wouldn’t have played a significant role in the Euros, would I have gone? Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it…
“I didn’t want to let anyone down but ultimately looking at some of my performances towards the end of last season I felt like I was.”
Rashford racked up just 84 minutes of football in the whole of Euro 2020 and failed to score a single goal. He was also one of the three England players to miss a penalty in the final against Italy.

The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria union of Journalist (NUJ), on Friday directed its members to immediately suspend coverage of activities of the state police command.
The directive was contained in a press release signed by the council chairman, Comrade Umar Sa’idu and the secretary, Isah Garba Gadau on police brutality against journalists in the State, made available to newsmen.
The Union condemned in strong terms the negative action of operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in the State who molested and injured one of its members, Damina Yusuf of the AIT on Thursday 30th July, 2021 while covering protest of the students of the Bauchi College of Agriculture, Yelwa, Bauchi.
The victim was later admitted at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.

The suspension of coverage of police activities, according to the release, would last until such a time the perpetrators of the dastardly act were fished out, prosecuted “in addition to the proper payment of compensation and settlement of medical bills of the victim”.
“The Bauchi Council of the Nigeria union of Journalists, NUJ, has noted with dismay, uncivilized manner of the Nigeria Police in adopting brutality as part of its tradition especially against the journalists.
“The union condemned in strong terms the negative action of the Rapid Response Squad of the State Police command that molested and injured one of its member, Damina Yusuf of the AIT on Thursday, 30th July, 2021 while covering students protest at the Bauchi College of Agriculture, Yelwa who was later admitted at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
“Based on this barbaric act of the police, the union has directed its members to suspend with immediate effect, coverage of all activities of the police in the state until the perpetrators of the act are fished out and prosecuted in addition to the proper payment of compensation and settlement of medical bills of the victim,” the NUJ stated.
It then noted with dissatisfaction the way members of the Nigeria Police from Bauchi command who always claimed to be partners of journalists in progress, brutalised, molested and harassed the AIT reporter and seized his camera, laptop computer, microphone with AIT logo, mobile phones, modem and wallet containing substantial amount of money, among other belongings.
The union, however, commended “the management of the College of Agriculture, Bauchi, for its humanitarian gesture by taking the AIT reporter to hospital for medical attention”.
The NUJ then called on the Bauchi State government to consider the establishment of a standing panel of inquiry to hear cases of brutality against citizens in the State.

The BBNaija Shine Ya Eye housemates had their first Jacuzzi Party on Friday night, following the completion of their task.
The Jacuzzi Party was one of Biggie’s rewards to the housemates for a successful first task.
For the party, the housemates slayed in their bikinis, trunks, and swim suits at the garden where it was held.
Drinks and chops were also made available to the housemates as they chilled off after their stressful rehearsals for the task.

Initially, Beatrice didn’t join the party as she remained sober even after Angel urged her to join.
Angel, however, warned Beatrice that she may be voted out if she continued that way.
After Angel’s warning and a conversation with Boma, Beatrice changed into a bikini and joined the party.
Also, the housemates are getting close to Emmanuel, who is currently the richest housemate after getting the lucky envelope with extra Abeg Naira.
While some congratulated him for his luck, others were a bit subtle. As he hung out with Liquorose, Beatrice teased, “Money changes people… you were my boyfriend before and now you are with someone else.”
During the party, some housemates were spotted getting cozy with each other.
While Emmanuel and Liquorose spent most of their time together, Sammie remained glued to Angel throughout the party.
Saga, Nini, Pere and Maria also spent quite a while in the bathtub, having the fun of their lives.

 Eight COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the NCDC in four Nigerian states on Saturday, taking the cumulative death toll to 2149.
Daily cases also shot up to 590, from 558.
This took the death toll in the central Nigerian state to 20.

Akwa Ibom reported two deaths, to have a cumulative tally of 26 deaths.
Ogun had two fatalities, raising its death toll to 57, while Oyo also logged one death.
The western Nigerian state now has 132 deaths from COVID-19.
NCDC announced the deaths, as daily cases almost reached the 600 mark.
Lagos reported 308 cases, an improvement over Thursday’s 376 cases
Akwa Ibom turned in 54 cases, next to Lagos.
Niger’s 23 cases covered 28 July and 29 July.
Also Delta’s nine cases were for Cases reported for 10 July, 11 July 13 July and 29 July.

Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare is out of the Tokyo Olympics after being provisionally suspended for a failed drugs test.

Okagbare won her heat of the 100m on Friday, but will not be on the start line for the semi-finals after it was confirmed she had failed a test.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said Okagbare had tested positive for a human growth hormone following an out-of-competition test on 19 July.
In a statement, the AIU said: “The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria today with immediate effect after a sample collected from the sprinter tested positive for human Growth Hormone.
“Growth Hormone is a non-specified substance on the 2021 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List and a provisional suspension is mandatory following an adverse analytical finding for such substance under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules. The AIU collected the sample from Ms. Okagbare during an out-of-competition test on 19 July.
“The WADA-accredited laboratory that analysed the sample notified the AIU of the adverse analytical finding at mid-day Central European Time yesterday, Friday 30 July. The athlete was notified of the adverse analytical finding and of her provisional suspension this morning in Tokyo. She was scheduled to participate in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m this evening.
“The AIU will make no further comment on this matter at this time.”
Dina Asher-Smith is Team GB’s big hope for gold in the 100m. She will be in action in the first semi-final later on Saturday.
Okagbare has an excellent pedigree, having won medals in the 200m and long jump at the world championships and an Olympic silver medal in 2008.

Ninety-one Boko Haram/Islamic States West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and their families have surrendered to the Nigerian Army in the North East.<a name='more' id="more"></a>
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
Nwachukwu said the troops of 202 Battalion took custody of eight insurgents and their families, comprising 10 adult females and 22 children, who surrendered at Ruwaza village in Bama Local Government Area of Borno 
.
He said the troops of Forward Operational Base (FOB) operating along BoCobs-Bama road also arrested 20 terrorists and their families, who surrendered to troops at Nbewa village also in Bama Local Government Area.
According to him, the surrendered families of the insurgents comprised 15 adult females and 26 children.
 
“The suspects all surrendered to the troops, during clearance operations in the areas on July 29, following ongoing intense clearance operations by troops in the general areas.
 
“The children among the surrendering suspects have been vaccinated with polio vaccines, while the adult and female suspects, who have been documented and screened are currently undergoing preliminary investigations,” he said.
 
Nwachukwu also disclosed that troops of 73 Battalion, in conjunction with a combined team of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and Hunters, intercepted a terrorists’ logistics supplier during a fighting patrol along Molai-Damboa road.
He said the team swiftly mobilised and stormed the location, where they arrested the suspect, while he was perfecting plans to deliver logistics to the insurgents in the forest.
He said the items recovered from the suspect include a vehicle, four jerry cans of 30 litres of PMS, one 4-litre gallon of engine oil, one motorcycle pump, one oil treatment and one torchlight.
According to him, other items recovered are one mosquito net, two praying mats, two blankets, four spanners, 10 packets of 1.5v battery and three dozens of diamond rubber solutions.
“Others are five packets of candies, five packets of seasoning and measures of other foodstuffs,” he said.

Following the discharge and acquittal of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, by the Kaduna State High Court, the state government has filed fresh charges against him.
Recall that Justice Gideon Kurada of the Kaduna State High Court discharged and acquitted El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, of all charges leveled against them.
According to Kurada, the charges against El-Zakzaky and his wife were not supposed to be filed, saying that the state government cannot arraign someone for a crime that was not an offence at the time.
The judge, however, found that the charges were filed against the duo in 2018 pursuant to the Penal Law enacted by the state government in 2017 over an alleged offence committed in 2015.

Counsel to the state government, Dari Bayero, explained that fresh charges have been filed against the IMN leader under the Treason and Treasonable Offences Act before a Federal High Court.
He explained that it was not in agreement with the reasoning and conclusion of Justice Kurada, saying that the government would appeal the case.
According to him, “We are going to appeal, there is no doubt about it, in fact, we have obtained the court judgment because we are not in agreement with my Lord’s reasoning and conclusion, it is not in consonance with the facts on ground.”

Nigeria on Thursday recorded 558 new COVID-19 infections in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control figures on Friday morning also showed that two new deaths from COVID-19-related complications were reported.
The centre said that Lagos State led the infection chart with 376 cases.
The NCDC said that Lagos is followed by Oyo with 33, Akwa Ibom-26, the FCT-22, Imo-15, Bayelsa and Ekiti reported 13 each.

The centre also said that Kano reported 12 cases while Ogun recorded 11, Plateau-11, Delta-nine, Jigawa-six, Rivers-four, Zamfara-four, Edo-two, and Ebonyi-one.
”Today’s report includes zero cases from Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Osun.
”The NCDC regrettably recorded two COVID-19-related deaths on Thursday keeping the death toll at 2,141,” the centre said.
The agency said that 44 people have recovered and were discharged from various isolation centres in the country on Thursday.
It added that till date, 164,930 recoveries have recorded nationwide in 36 states and the FCT.
The NCDC said that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre, activated at Level II, continues to coordinate the national response activities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NCDC reported that Nigeria has so far recorded 10 new cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant.
The Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu disclosed this at the ministerial briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja, on July 27.
NAN reports that the Delta variant is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a variant of concern, given its increased transmissibility.
The variant has so far been detected in over 90 countries.
Ihekweazu, who was represented by Mrs Elsie Ilori, Director of Disease Surveillance Department, while giving an update on Nigeria’s COVID-19 situation, said that while progress had been made in response to the ongoing pandemic with the fact-paced development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and vaccines globally, variants of concern with increased transmissibility pose a threat.
“With sequencing efforts, we have detected 10 cases which are confirmed to be the Delta variant.
”We are working hard to ensure genomic surveillance of travellers’ samples and to scale up our genomic sequencing capacity.
In preparation for the third wave, Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said the ministry had taken steps to urgently scale-up and enhance local oxygen capacity even before oxygen consumption increased.
He also said Nigeria had invested directly and strategically to ensuring oxygen availability to avert unforeseen incidence of oxygen insufficiency for COVID-19 patients in the country.
On COVID-19 vaccines, the minister said that Nigeria was expecting over 29 million of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
He said that the vaccine was purchased by the Government of Nigeria through the African Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) facility and over four million of the Moderna.
He also said that Nigeria is expecting almost 700 thousand of the AstraZeneca vaccine, through the COVAX facility from bilateral donations from the governments of the U.S. and the UK as well as Pfizer and Sinopharm from both bilateral agreements and through the COVAX facility.

The police in Imo have arrested the alleged Eastern Security Network (ESN) native doctor Benneth Okoli with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
This was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abutu Yaro on Thursday.
The statement from the CP’s office said: ”After a diligent forensic and technical intelligence gathering, the suspect, Benneth Okoli, 49, was arrested in his shrine at Akuma in Oru East LGA of Imo.
“On searching the shrine, one locally made IED, charms, and weed suspected to be cannabis were recovered.

“The suspect on interrogation made useful statements and is currently assisting the police to arrest the rest of his gang, presently on the run.”
”The arrest is coming a few days after bandits had an encounter with the police in the area.
“Sequel to the attack on the Omuma Police Station in Oru East by bandits suspected to be the remnants of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and ESN terror groups, the CP dispatched the command’s tactical teams led by ACP Benjamin Osuji.
“The team was directed to carry out a discreet investigation and arrest the bandits involved in the attack of the police station.”
The CP commended the gallantry displayed by the officers and men of the command, urging them to sustain the tempo.
The CP “also thanked the people of Imo for their support and solicited for an all society approach to sustaining the already improved security architecture in the state.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it’s disquieting that the integrity of Nigeria has fallen so abysmally low under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The PDP made this known in a statement released on Thursday while reacting to the link of the head of the IGP Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, to an international fraudster, Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi by the United States (US) Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.
The PDP said the revelation of the involvement of Kyari, the head of Nigeria’s intelligence response unit, as a receiver of proceeds of international fraud is worrisome, disturbing and a stain on the integrity of our nation.
The opposition party said: “It is indeed disquieting that the integrity of our nation has fallen so abysmally low under the corrupt and fraud-patronizing President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, to the extent that the head of its police intelligence unit is being charged in connection with international fraud.

“Our party demands that the APC administration should not sweep this matter under the carpet given the manifest rapport between Kyari and some top APC leaders. We urge President Buhari not to “ease out” this case of corruption but should immediately restore the integrity and image of our nation by allowing for a forensic investigation on the suspect.
“Moreover, if this Abba Kyari matter is not well handled, it will be a permanent stain on the reputation of our police, security system and our nation at large.
“The PDP, therefore, asks President Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police to take in Abba Kyari for questioning and if found culpable, he should be handed over to the FBI.”

Lionel Messi has arrived in Barcelona, as he prepares to pen a new five-year contract at Camp Nou, according to Sport.
The deal is worth in the region of £250,000 a week.
Messi is currently a free agent, as his old contract expired.
The 34-year-old has been on holiday since helping Argentina win the Copa America earlier this month, but has returned to Barcelona on Wednesday.

He already has a verbal agreement with the LaLiga giants over the new deal, which will see him take a 50% pay cut.
Messi is expected to put pen to paper within the next week.
The 10-time LaLiga winner has scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barca in all competitions, including 38 goals in 47 appearances during the 2020/2021 campaign.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, has defended Abba Kyari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, following reports linking him to alleged internet fraudster, Ramon Abass, popularly known as Hushpuppi.
The United States, US, Department of Justice, DOJ, in California, had accused Kyari, who is the head of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of receiving bribe from Hushpuppi.
Reports from the DOJ said Hushuppi bribed Kyari to jail a disloyal gang member in Nigeria in a fraudulent deal of over $1m.
The DOJ said these were part of the findings by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI. However, Kyari has denied the allegations.

Against this backdrop, the IGP had ordered the review of the allegations against Kyari.
Reacting, Fani-Kayode described Kyari as a super cop who has risked his life to protect Nigerians from murderers and terrorists.
He vowed not to condemn the IRT boss unless he sees any evidence to the contrary.
Sharing a photo of Kyari on his Twitter handle, Fani-Kayode wrote: “A super cop that has risked his life protecting us from kidnappers, murderers and terrorists all these years and that has arrested more criminals than any other is accused of taking bribes from a yahoo boy and scammer all the way from America & we are expected to believe it? Not me!
“Abba is one of the bravest, brightest and best cops in Nigeria and I will not believe these crazy allegations levelled against him or condemn him unless I see any evidence to the contrary.
“He has proved himself over and over again when it comes to catching criminals and I do not believe that he is one himself. If he were he would not have such an excellent record in combating crime.
“As far as I am concerned there are as many crooked, bent & killer cops all over the world as there are good ones & America has its fair share of both. The only people that ought to take pleasure in reading this crap about Abba are the kidnappers and terrorists in our country.
“Allegations are a dime a dozen and an indictment does not amount to a conviction: show me the evidence or keep your mouth shut forever. I urge Abba to continue the good work he has been doing and not allow himself to be distracted by his numerous detractors. This is deep.”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has described as totally indefensible, reprehensible, despicable and a shame, President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical trip to the United Kingdom.
HURIWA noted that Buhari has been in charge of Nigeria both as a military head of state and two terms as a democratically elected President, adding that it was indefensible that during these years, the President could not fix Nigeria’s health infrastructure to end travelling abroad for medical reasons.
According to the human rights group, Buhari, who is in the second year of his final tenure, should not be seen globetrotting in search of medical assistance for his personal medical challenges.
“The failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to use six years to fix the health infrastructure in Nigeria so as to stave off medical tourism that drains Nigeria of the much-needed foreign reserves is totally indefensible, reprehensible, despicable and it is a shame to the nation that the president is even defending this immoral behavior,” the group said.

HURIWA was reacting to a recent statement by Femi Adesina, spokesman to the President, where he had given reasons why his principal travels overseas for medical tourism.
The organisation dismissed as puerile and illogical the position of Adesina, telling him to stop deceiving himself thinking he is convincing anyone about a matter that exposes the profound hypocrisy of his boss.
“President Buhari’s continuous junketing at huge expenses to the public in search of private health issues is a demonstration that he is a colossal failure as a political leader because as far as medical history is concerned, the current Nigerian President is the only leader in any civilized democracy that travels outside his nation in search of medical treatment,” HURIWA said.
HURIWA said that Buhari had personally condemned medical tourism which he claims drains Nigeria of resources, adding that it was hypocritical for him to continue engaging in medical tourism.
“If Buhari is honest, he would have deployed the right resources since 2015 to fix the health infrastructures and even build a state of the art medical centre to invite his British born medical doctors to relocate to Nigeria to avoid doing the same thing the President condemns,” the organisation added.
The rights group pointed to the fact that the National Assembly has been voting billions of Naira to fund the running of the presidential clinic in Aso Rock since 2015 with nothing to show for the funds.
The group further recalled First Lady, Aisha Buhari, had lamented the poor state of the presidential clinic, accusing the management of misusing the yearly budgets for the health institutions, saying that there were not even syringes at the clinic.
“We in HURIWA are shocked that the same President that makes heavy weather of fighting corruption has done nothing about this damaging allegation of corruption made by his wife but only yesterday, the President administered oath of secrecy on his staff in a bid to undermine the anti-graft crusade purportedly being carried out by the same government,” the group said in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and made available to newsmen on Thursday.

Twitter has announced that its New York City and San Francisco offices will be closed permanently in response to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warnings about COVID-19.
The decision to shut its two largest offices comes after the CDC recommended that fully vaccinated Americans in parts of the country with high transmission of the coronavirus disease should return to wearing masks indoors, citing new data on the highly contagious Delta variant.
The CDC also said masks should be required of everyone inside K-12 schools while urging classrooms to return to full-time, in-person classes with proper prevention strategies in place.

Sabina, a sibling of the late Major General Hassan Ahmed, was released on Wednesday after thirteen days in captivity.
Newsmen received photos of Sabina kidnapped after the ex-Provost Marshal (PM) of the Nigerian Army was assassinated a fortnight ago at the Abaji area of Abuja.
The interment took place on Friday July 16 at the Lungi Barracks Cemetery in the nation’s capital amid outrage by citizens still lamenting the fate of commoners since a General died that way.
It was earlier reported how armed men ambuscaded and opened fire on the senior officer as he returned from a trip to Okene in Kogi State.

The slain Ahmed traveled without guards. He was with only his sister and an aide who drove a Toyota Hilux vehicle with a private plate number. The assailants took Sabina away.
On Thursday, a source informed newsmen that the killers established contact and demanded N50million after her third day in confinement.
The source revealed how funds were amassed through a WhatsApp group created to support the victim’s family. The screen capture was sighted.
The group, titled “Rescue For Sabina”, had a total of 34 memebrs including friends and relatives. Other spirited individuals also contributed and at the end, N7million was paid to the criminals.
The source said: “The gang requested N50million initially but the family, after doing all they could, gathered N6.3million.
“They begged the kidnappers to collect the amount which was raised under 10 days but the captors rejected and insisted on N7million.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) morning, they gave a 24-hour ultimatum and warned that failure to pay will have consequences.
“This got everyone more agitated. We had to rally to ensure the money was paid before they effect their threat.”
On how the money was delivered and how the ex-hostage was received, the source said only the family members could provide such details. But none is willing to speak to the press.
Sabina, in her 30s, is fatigued and undergoing medical treatment. It is unclear if the Nigerian Army played a part in her freedom.
After the incident, it was gathered that the military and other security agencies launched a joint operation around the Koton Karfe axis of Kogi.
They combed forests in the area used as hideouts by kidnappers and bandits. It is still unclear if arrests were made.
Yet, the Army has not announced an inquiry into Ahmed’s murder or any update on efforts to track down the perpetrators.
Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, Chief of Army Staff, recently appointed him as a Director. He assumed office less than two weeks before his demise.
Critics condemn the silence of presidency since Ahmed’s passing, noting that President Muhammadu Buhari routinely mourn late academics, music and sports stars, politicians military veterans, etc.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has grilled former governor of Nasarawa State and serving senator, Tanko Al-Makura, and his wife, Mairo, over alleged corruption.
They were invited to the commission’s office in Abuja on Wednesday to answer some questions on alleged corruption.
A source at the commission disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday evening.
As of the time of filing this report, the couple were being grilled by operatives of the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja.

The source did not give details of the allegation against the ex-governor and his wife.
Spokesperson of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren when contacted declined comment on the couple’s arrest.

COVID-19 killed five people on Wednesday as cases surged in Nigeria, with 535 new infections reported in 18 states.
The rising cases are indications that the third wave of the dreaded COVID-19 has hit Nigeria.
Figures released by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) showed that cases surged from 404 on Tuesday to 535 on Wednesday.
The NCDC said the five deaths reported were from Akwa Ibom State.

With the new infections, Nigeria now has a total of 172,263 confirmed cases, with 164,886 recoveries and 2,139 deaths.
Lagos topped the daily chart as usual with 219 fresh cases, down from the 356 cases reported on Tuesday, while Akwa Ibom came second, posting 142 cases.
Others are: Oyo (47), Rivers (17), Jigawa (13), Edo (13), Ekiti (11), Bayelsa (11), Ondo(10), Osun (9), Plateau (8), Ogun (7), Kaduna (7), Kano (5),FCT (5), Imo (4), Gombe (4), and Nasarawa (3)
According to NCDC: “On the 28th of July, 2021, 535 new confirmed cases and 5 deaths were recorded in Nigeria
“Till date, 172,263 cases have been confirmed, 164,886 cases have been discharged and 2,139 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 2, continues to coordinate the national response activities.”

Nigerian athlete Blessing Okagbare has said that the sport system in Nigeria is flawed and that athletes are always at the receiving end of the damages.
Lamenting that athletes are being neglected, Okagbare said those who are not passionate about sports should not handle the administrative positions.
She said this after some Nigerian athletes were disqualified from competing in the Tokyo Olympics for failing to undergo mandatory tests ahead of the global sports event.
According to her, “I have said it before and I will say it again. If you do not know the sport, not passionate about it/us (the athletes), then you have no business there as an administrator. The sport system in Nigeria is so flawed and we athletes are always at the receiving end of the damages.

“They were busy fighting over power, exercising their pride over puma contract/ kits forgetting their major responsibility “THE ATHLETES”. It’s sad that this cycle keeps repeating its self and some people will come out to say I am arrogant for speaking my truth. It is my CAREER.”
Okagbare is, however, not among the athletes disqualified from the Tokyo Olympics.
The names omitted from the competition by the International Olympic Committee include Knowledge Omovoh, Ruth Usoro, Favor Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Glory Patrick, Yinka Ajayi, Tima Godbless, Chidi Okezie, Chioma Onyekwere and Annette Echikunwoke.

A Nigerian national, Olumide Bankole Morakinyo was on Wednesday sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to repay $975,863.
According to the court, the money, equivalent to N400 million repayment, is in restitution to multiple victims of his conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Morakinyo, 38, residing in Canada, according to court documents conspired with Lukman Shina Aminu, a resident of New Hampshire, to create unauthorized accounts for participants in the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) internet portal.
Aminu had been charged in a separate indictment and was sentenced on December 18, 2019, to 51 months in prison.

The document further revealed that the duo used Personally identifiable information (PII) of various ERS participants to make changes to their accounts in the ERS internet portal.
Bank deposit information on file in the system was changed to re-route retirement payments to debit cards controlled by Aminu.
Aminu, who possessed the physical debit cards, would withdraw money under instructions from his co-conspirator, Morakinyo and then transfer or deposit that money at Morakinyo’s direction.
The duo used the debit cards for cash withdrawals and to purchase money orders for personal expenses and for buying used vehicles to be shipped overseas to Nigeria and Benin for resale.
The court document further revealed that the duo, with these international automobile transactions, Morakinyo and his conspirators laundered the fraud proceeds by concealing the source of the funds and making the money appear to be legitimate income.
U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman while ruling also ordered that Morakinyo be placed on three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has congratulated his Ondo State counterpart, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on the affirmation of his election by the Supreme Court.
Governor Fayemi in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, said the apex court in the land has put a legal seal on the popular choice made by the people of Ondo State at the October 10, 2020 election.
Fayemi urged the Ondo Governor to be magnanimous in victory and let the triumph serve as motivation for better service delivery to the electorate who gave him a second mandate in office.
He hailed the people of Ondo State for maintaining peace throughout the period the case lasted at the Election Petition Tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

The Kpop Ham Dandali Gyet Maude, paramount ruler of Ham people in Kwoi local government area of Kaduna State, abducted by kidnappers on Tuesday has regained his freedom.
The abductors of the 83-year-old monarch had demanded N100 million after abducting him from his farm located in Panda, along the Kwoi-Keffi highway.
According to a source, the monarch was released by his abductors on Wednesday evening hale and hearty.
Recall that the abduction of the Kpop Ham came after a similar abduction of 83-year-old Emir of Kajuru, Kajuru LGA of Kaduna, Alhaji Hassan Adamu.

He was kidnapped from his house along with about 12 members of his family, including his wife and children.
However, respite came the Emir’s way when the police and other security personnel were deployed to comb all the forest, and less than 24 hours he was rescued.
The Kpop Ham, Danladi Gyet Maude is the fourth monarch to be kidnaped.
In December 2017, the paramount ruler of Ikulu land, Zangon Kataf LGA, Agwam Akulu, Chief Sidi Kukah, who is the younger brother to Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, was abducted from his palace and kept in the bush for over two weeks before he was eventually released by his abductors after ransom was paid.
In October 2018, the Agom Adara, Dr Maiwada Galadima, was also kidnapped on his way back from Kaduna, after attending a meeting convened by the Kaduna State Government.
However, after ransom was paid for his freedom, the Kidnappers killed him and dumped his corpse along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, eight days after.

The Supreme Court has fixed judgment for 12 noon today in the appeal filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last governorship election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede against the victory of Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progrssives Congress (APC).
A seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili chose the time for the court’s decision after taking final arguments a moment ago, from the lawyers representing the parties.

The main appeal filed by Jegede and his party is challenging the competence of APC’s sponsorship of Akeredolu for the election. There are also three cross-appeals by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC and Akeredolu.

Some residences and major roads of Katsina State were left flooded after a heavy downpour lasting five hours on Monday morning, killing two persons.
The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that over 1,500 houses were submerged in three Local Government Areas.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the agency, Umar Mohammed, on Wednesday reportedly said 800 houses were affected in Faskari, 400 in Bindawa and 300 in Sabuwa Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Umar also said that the heavy downpour resulted in the death of two persons in Bindawa LGA and that plans are ongoing to assist other victims.

Similarly, in the state capital, Katsina, the heavy downpour flooded Tudun Katsira street as well as the Kofar Kaura roundabout axis, making it difficult for vehicles and commuters to ply the area.
Recall that last year, there was a similar occurrence in the same area that led to the collapse of some houses and a poultry farm belonging to one Mr. Emeka Aniefuna killing about 4000 birds among other livestocks.
Same last year, such heavy downpour also submerged Kano road, between the Steel Rolling roundabout and the Federal Secretariat but the state government had since constructed drainages for the area averting a repeat of the incident.
However, the state government is yet to come to the rescue of those living and plying their trade in the Tudun Katsira neighbourhood one year after.
While speaking to some residents at the Tudun Katsira neighbourhood, they said Governor Aminu Bello Masari and his aides had visited the neighbourhood in time past to see things for themselves.
They appealed to the state government to expedite action on the issue.
“The Governor and his aides came here inside the rain sometimes back to assess the situation but nothing has been done yet. We are appealing to the government to try and do something fast,” one of them said.
Efforts to speak with the Commissioner for Environment, Hamza Suleiman Faskari, on the development and what the government is doing to arrest the issue of flood in the state did not yield any result as he was not in his office and did not respond to the phone calls put through to him.

Three suspected traffic robbers arrested by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and security personnel attached to him have been granted bail.
The suspects were admitted to bail each in sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum by Magistrate Adebayo Tella after they were arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Meta.
Governor Sanwo-Olu intercepted the suspects (Aliu Umar, Mustapha Umar, Abubakar Laraban and Aliu Mohammed) while attempting to unleash terror on a motorist in the Ojota area of Lagos.
The suspects were arraigned on three count charges bordering on conspiracy, breach of public peace and possession of weapons.

They pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Kehinde Olatunde the prosecuting counsel told the court that the suspects on Tuesday, July 21 conspired among themselves to commit the offences.
He noted that they conducted themselves disorderly by bearing offensive weapons and wandering on the highway in circumstances that are illegal.
Kehinde said they used offensive weapons, including two cutlasses in an attempt to rob a motorist around Ojota inbound Alausa, before they were arrested by Governor Sanwo-Olu.
The defence counsel, A. C. Abazee, however, urged the court to grant his clients bail in liberal terms.
The case was adjourned till August 6, 2021, for trial.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers have narrowly lost by 92-99  points their second match in the Tokyo Olympics against Germany on Wednesday .
It was their second loss after Australia.
Nigeria started against Germany brilliantly as Miami Heat Point guard Gabe Vincent secured the first basket of the game.
Jordan Nwora, who plays for Milwaukee Bucks registered 33 points for D’Tigers, with 7 rebounds and three assists.

The team had most of their points in the match via three pointers as the game ended tied 50-50 in the second quarter.
The third quarter also ended tied (74-74).
Although D’Tigers made frantic effort in the fourth quarter to get a win, Germany were dominant and took the game beyond Nigeria.
Nigeria at some point in the game led with as much as twelve points but didn’t do enough defensively, giving away fouls the Germans easily converted from the free throw line.
The win marks as the first Olympic win for Germany’s basketball team who lost previously to Italy.
Nigeria will play their last game against Italy on Saturday, hoping to win and if lucky qualify for the next round.

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, has arraigned a man, John Bidemi, before an Akure Magistrate’s Court for attempting to kill a 70-year-old woman.
Bidemi was dragged before the court for escaping from lawful custody.
According to the prosecution, the defendant, attempted to kill the septuagenarian identified as Victoria Omotayo, by stabbing her with a knife on July 12,2021 at about 10.00am.
The offence was said to be punishable under Section 320 of Criminal Code Law, cap 37, vol.1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The charge also revealed that the accused, also escaped from custody on October 22,2020 in Benin, while in the lawful custody of the Correctional facility, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 135 (a) of Criminal Code Law Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Law of Ondo State.
With the prosecution counsel, O.F Akeredolu, stressing that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain criminal matters like attempted murder, he stated that the offence is liable to life imprisonment under the mandatory Section 230 ( 2) of the Ondo State Criminal Code.
Akeredolu, therefore, sought for an adjournment to enable him transfer the case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
He submitted that the court has the statutory power to remand the defendant at the Correctional centre till the legal advice was issued.
Counsel to the defendant, Yemi Salau, who urged the court not to remand the accused said the proper procedure according to Section 2269 must be followed strictly so that the liberty of the accused will not be affected as a citizen of Nigeria.
He canvassed that: “Under the Criminal Justice Law, there is a provision for it, that if you are seeking remand in court, you must come with an application to remand such fellow which was not followed in this instance. So, any remand made by this court is unlawful.”
He pleaded with the court to grant the defendant bail on a liberal term, promising that he will not jump bail.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Musa Al-Yunus, however said the court has jurisdiction to try the case.
On whether the second offence could be tried in Ondo State, Al-Yunus said though it happened in Benin, it could also be tried in Ondo State because it’s the same court of competent jurisdiction.
The Magistrate subsequently ordered the remand of the accused person in correctional facility pending the outcome of advice from the DPP and adjourned the case till August 23.

Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has revealed his conversation with Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, before his permanent move to Union Berlin.
According to Awoniyi, Klopp urged him to sign for the German club, as they showed a big interest in landing him.

Senator Dino Melaye who represented the Kogi West senatorial district during the 8th National Assembly has questioned the capacity of President Muhammadu Buhati to represent Nigerians in a global education summit in the United Kingdom.
It was reported that Buhari had on Monday departed Abuja for London to enable him attend the Global Education Summit on Financing Global Partnership for Education (GPE) 2021-2025 in the UK.
Disclosing this, Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the President will remain in London for two weeks to enable him undergo his earlier scheduled medical checkup in London.
Reacting, the former lawmaker slammed the president for representing the country, stating that he has nothing to offer academically.

According to Dino, the President would have asked the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to represent the country in the global summit.
Dino made the remark in a video he tweeted on his official Twitter handle.
He said, “It is very funny that President Muhammadu Buhari has gone to London to attend the Global Education Summit.
“It is funny and it is outing Nigeria in a very bad shape because I’m wondering what will president Buhari be discussing in a global education summit.
“This is the man that has just secondary school certificate, a school sat failure and unfortunately, that certificate is even missing. We have not seen it, no copy of it.
“And you are going to a global education summit where you have professors emeritus. Where you have intellectual mobile characters. And Buhari is going to sit down and discuss what?
“I was even thinking that he would send someone like the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to go and interact. Except the president is going to be deaf and dumb in the summit.
“Except he is he is going there to be an observer, I’m imagining what President Buhari is going there to discuss.
“It is a shame that Nigeria is not represented in this global summit because we have a president who has nothing to offer, who is intellectually stagnant, who has no capacity academically.
“Present Buhari should have told us that he is going for medical not Global education summit”.

Nigeria has so far recorded 10 new cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant.
The Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu disclosed this at the ministerial briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja,
The Delta variant is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a variant of concern, given its increased transmissibility.

The variant has so far been detected in over 90 countries.
However, Ihekweazu, who was represented by Mrs Elsie Ilori, Director of Disease Surveillance Department, CDC while, giving an update on Nigeria’s COVID-19 situation, said that progress had been made in response to the ongoing pandemic with the fact-paced development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and vaccines globally, variants of concern with increased transmissibility pose a threat.
 
“With sequencing efforts, we have detected 10 cases which are confirmed to be the Delta variant.
 
”We are working hard to ensure genomic surveillance of travelers’ samples and to scale up our genomic sequencing capacity.
 
“While doing this, we are scaling up our testing capability, by the rollout of rapid Diagnostic Test Kits (RTDs), in selected states nationwide.
“As we have mentioned before, we encourage congregate settings, such as hospitals, schools, workplaces and correctional facilities, to take advantage of the WHO, approved RTDs kits to detect cases promptly,” he explained.
 
The NCDC boss disclosed that the country’s test positive rate based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), the test alone, which he noted was an indication used to understand the level of virus transmission increased to 3.4 per cent in the country.
 
“This represents a rise compared to Test Positivity Rate (TPR), which was sustained for several weeks at around 1 percent in the country. In addition, last week five deaths were recorded.
 
“These figures must serve as a strong warning to be even more on our guard regarding reducing the risk of COVID-19 spread, especially considering the more transmissible Delta variants detected in the country,” he advised.
 
Ihekweazu stressed that Lagos state continued to have the highest contribution to the current caseload in the country.
 
He noted that states which have recently recorded increases in cases include Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Oyo and Rivers states.
 
“Akwa Ibom had a sudden surge in cases in the last week and so, we have deployed a Rapid Response Team, to support the state’s response activities.
 
“The team will support Akwa Ibom’s Emergency Operations Centre incident management systems, ensure the smooth running of samples collection centres, laboratory cases detection and general coordination,” he disclosed.
 
The DG said that while the agency continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was also focusing on other infectious diseases.
 
“Our response to the cholera outbreak has continued and as at July 22, a total of 22,130 suspected cases and unfortunately 526 deaths, have been reported due to this illness in 18 states and the FCT.
 
 
 
“However, in the last two weeks, a decline in cases has been recorded and the Emergency Operations Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and other partners, is continuing to coordinate a multi-sector response.,” he said.
 
The NCDC boss noted that the agency always ensured that it made records of challenges from each outbreak and put in measures to improve the next response.
 
“Last week, NCDC held a national COVID-19 intra action review with various stakeholders to review preparedness and outbreak response, to identify best practices, challenges and propose recommended actions,” he noted.
 
According to Ihekweazu, some areas of response which we are working on are that we have continued to reinvigorate our risk communications efforts, to ensure Nigerians understand that coronavirus is real and still poses a high risk.
 
The DG added that in a bid to scale the use of RTDs tests, there have been training of trainers on the appropriate and safe use of these kits in several states, including a just concluded training in Bayelsa, and Benue.
 
Regarding improving surveillance of COVID-19 cases in the country, he added that the agency was training community volunteers to support case finding and contact tracing.
 
In a related development, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire has warned that Nigeria was at risk of registering high incidences of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
 
This it said was due to neglect of preventive measures at Airports and other points of entry in the country.
 
Ehnaire decried that in spite of evidence of the emergence of a third wave in the country, passengers were absconding quarantine at all points of entry.
 
The minister also expressed concerns that citizens had refused to adhere to public health advisories, even as treatment bed occupancy was also registering an increase.
 
He expressed this concern while noting that countries that were popular travel destinations for Nigerians, including the UK, U.S., UAE, France and Turkey had a high incidence of this virulent variant.
 
“Nigeria is at increased risk if we continue to neglect public health protocols placed at points of entry, which are our first line of defence and a critical point of concern.
 
“The ministry’s Point of Entry (PoE) pillar of the COVID-91 response has been continuously monitoring passenger arrivals especially from high-risk countries like India, Turkey and Brazil.
 
”This process has been an arduous one given that port health staff have continued to report a trend of absconding by quarantined passengers, an act detrimental to our pandemic response and public health safety.
 
“The severity of this disease should NOT be disregarded as it is still a primary cause of concern, even in countries with stronger health systems,” he said.
 
The minister, therefore, tasked all persons to comply with the Port Health staff or risk facing sanctions, which included prosecution.
 
“Non-compliance with their directives constitutes a risk to national health security and will be handled with commensurate severity.
 
“I wish to reemphasise that we must fervently avoid complacency and continue to abide by the given Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions.
 
“Remember that Nigeria is a well-traversed country and is susceptible to further importation of the virus, especially when there is clear evidence that the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has begun across the continent,” he added.
 
The minister further stressed that in the past 24 hours, the world witnessed an increase in reported cases of COVID-19 across a significant number of countries, due to the high transmissibility of the Delta Variant.
 
“As of July 25, Nigeria had a total of 170,895 COVID-19 cases and 2,132 fatalities. There are 4,180 active cases across the country, including 216 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours from 7 states.
 
“Nigeria started recording an increase in cases after the first case of the delta variant was reported early July,” he stressed.
 
In preparation for the third wave, Ehanire said the ministry had taken steps to urgently scale up and enhance local oxygen capacity even before oxygen consumption increased.
 
He also said Nigeria had invested directly and strategically to ensuring oxygen availability to avert unforeseen incidence of oxygen insufficiency for COVID-19 patients in the country.
 
On COVID-19 vaccines, the minister said that Nigeria was expecting over 29 million of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
 
He said that the vaccine was purchased by the Government of Nigeria through the African Union’s African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) facility and over four million of the Moderna.
 
He also said that Nigeria is expecting almost 700 thousand of the AstraZeneca vaccine, through the COVAX facility from bilateral donations from the governments of the U.S. and the UK as well as Pfizer and Sinopharm from both bilateral agreements and through the COVAX facility.
 
Also speaking, Minister of State for Health, Sen. Olorunnimbe Mamora said that COVID-19 would continue to have a significant impact on the way Nigerians lived.
 
Mamora urged Nigerians to stay safe because a large portion of the country remained unvaccinated and highly contagious variants like delta would be spreading as seen in many countries, spurring outbreaks.
