Eden Hazard's penalty secured Chelsea the FA Cup for the eighth time as they beat Manchester United in what could be Antonio Conte's final match in charge.<br />

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has revealed that David de Gea will start in goal in Saturday evening’s FA Cup final against Chelsea, because Sergio Romero has only just returned after injury.<br />

Although De Gea is first choice, Romero has played in all the rounds before the semi-final, as well as last season’s Europa League final victory.<br />
<br />
But he had to sit out in the 2-1 defeat of Spurs in the semi-final, after suffering a knee injury during Argentina’s 6-1 friendly defeat to Spain on March 27.<br />
<br />
He is now fit again and started United’s 1-0 win at Watford on Sunday, but Mourinho has decided it is safer to go with De Gea at Wembley.<br />
<br />
“He (Romero) was injured for a long, long time.<br />
<br />
“He was injured for around two and something months.<br />
<br />
“He didn’t play some matches that normally would be his matches, his semi-final against Tottenham, a couple more matches before the final.<br />
<br />
“He really only trained one week before the Watford match – and a bit more before – and that is the reason.<br />
<br />
“It is not about trust, it is not about my confidence in him.<br />
<br />
“Last season the Europa League final was a much more important match than this one, it was giving us the possibility to play Champions League.<br />
<br />
“And I played the Europa League final with Sergio, so it is not about confidence or no confidence, it is about the process of the last couple of months, since he had an important injury against Spain,” Mourinho explained.</div>

The Gombe Police Command on Saturday deployed no fewer than 500 policemen to the venue of the APC State Congress to ensure the safety of lives and property.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gombe International Hotel, venue of the exercise, had been cordoned off, with security men allowing only those invited.<br />
<br />
Vehicles were not allowed into the hotel premises, just as those on foot were thoroughly searched.<br />

Speaking to newsmen on the security arrangement, David Junwan, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations who disclosed the number of personnel deployed to the venue, said the command did not want to take chances.<br />

Junwan said apart from the 500 policemen from the command, there were other security men who came from other places in the company of dignitaries.</div>

A press statement by the Kano Commissioner of police, Rabiu Yusuf, signed on his behalf by SP Magaji Musa Majia, the public relations officer of the command that was made available to  Vanguard described the news story as “false and an act by mischief makers. ”<br />

The statement read “The attention of Kano State Police Command is drawn to trending headlines in some national dailies and online Media that the ’’ Police Launched prove, threaten bloggers arrest’’ over IGP’s trending video.<br />

“The Command hereby debunks the news as false in its entirety and an act by mischief makers. No journalist was arrested nor invited by the Command for interrogation over the video clip.<br />

The Federal Government has put up a reconciliation processes towards amicable settlement of the trade dispute between it and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).<br />

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole made this known in a statement issued by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relations of the ministry on Friday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
The minister made remarks in reaction to the order of an interim injunction granted by the National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja compelling the striking members of JOHESU to immediately resume duties.<br />
<br />
He recalled that the government’s side waited for six hours on Thursday for JOHESU’s representatives to continue with the jointly agreed meeting which the union had earlier boycotted.<br />
<br />
“Shortly after the adjournment of the boycotted meeting, an official communication titled: Collapse of negotiation between the Federal Government and Joint Health Sector Unions was issued by JOHESU,” he said.<br />
<br />
He explained that in the document JOHESU said that negotiation with Federal government had broken down.<br />
<br />
The Minister, however, maintained that government had not reneged on its commitment to promote peace and harmony in the health sector.<br />
<br />
He added that government would continue to engage in continuous dialogue on how to improve the sector.<br />
<br />
Adewole, therefore, urged the union to consider the plight of innocent Nigerians in need of health care and return to work while negotiation continues.<br />
<br />
Adewole also directed the Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of tertiary hospitals to commence the process of documenting staff as they return to work and update the Ministry accordingly. </div>

No fewer than 50 persons, on Saturday, sustained serious injuries at the state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, when political thugs invaded the venue of the congress held by a faction of the party.<br />

The number of casualties were still counting as at time of filing this report.<br />
<br />
The factional congress held at the BTO hall, along Ilesa road, had started peacefully before the supposed hired thugs invaded the venue brandishing various weapons including guns, cutlasses and axes, among others.<br />
<br />
Leaders of the party including the member representing Ifedore/Idanre federal constituency, Hon. Bamidele Baderinwa and the Osun State Commissioner for Regional Integration, Hon. Bola Ilori, were beaten to pulp.<br />
<br />
Also journalists, especially the correspondents of The Sun Newspaper and other media organisations at the venue of the congress, were severely beaten by the thugs who blocked all the entrances to the hall when they perpetrated their devilish act.<br />
<br />
While Hon. Ilori narrowly escaped from the venue, some of his aides were not fortunate as they sustained machete cuts on their heads.<br />
<br />
The thugs, who claimed to be acting on “authorities from above” were alleged to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).<br />
<br />
The thugs, who came in seven buses to the venue of the congress, had gone straight to the hall where the delegates were seated threatening to kill people if they failed to co-operate with them, after which they beat the delegates and other innocent people despite the presence of heavy security operatives.<br />
<br />
The factional congress, it was alleged, gained the blessing of the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, but this claim could not be authenticated as at time of filing this report.<br />
<br />
However, the faction recognised by the national secretariat of the party also held its congress at the International Events Centre, Akure.<br />
<br />
The state chairman of the party, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, who was the only contestant described the congress as ‘peaceful and authentic’.<br />
<br />
He dissociated his faction from the violence that rocked the venue of the parallel congress.</div>

Ahead of the May 22 celebration of the rededication of Biafra, the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike faction, has declared that there will be free movement of persons and businesses across the old Eastern region.<br />

The group stated that schools, markets , banks and other business centres would be open throughout the celebration, stressing that MASSOB cannot be seen inflicting suffering on the same people it is seeking to liberate from bondage .<br />
In an interview with Sunday Vanguard in Aba, MASSOB Leader, Abia South zone, Mr.Fred Onyenaucheya, explained that May 22 is celebrated annually as the date on which the Biafra was rededicated by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, at 175 Faulks road, Aba, on May 22, 2000 and urged Biafra people to come out en mass and rejoice.<br />

He disclosed that some foreign delegations from Biafra friendly nations have started arriving to monitor the celebrations, and described the development as a sign that the struggle to actualize an independent state of Biafra is on course.<br />
<br />
Onyenaucheya stated that the event which would hold simultaneously in the 11 states of the old Eastern region will feature dances, march past, concert and competition in some sporting events.<br />
<br />
“We are celebrating the rededication of Biafra on May 22 in the old Eastern region. Our leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike rededicated Biafra on May 22, 2000, at 175 Faulks road, Aba. Before, then nobody dared to mention the word, Biafra. It is an annual event where we march round the town and make merry on the basis that the actualization of Biafra is at hand.From Asaba to Owerri to Ikom , Uyo, Aba, Yenagoa and Port Harcourt, it will be celebrations on May 22.<br />

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu has commended former Gov. Peter Obi on his edifying philosophies of life and appeal to other Nigerians to emulate him. Speaking yesterday at the requiem mass for Obi’s elder Sister at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ukana, Enugu State, he said his idea of making burials modest and use the money that would have gone into it to add value to humanity was a lesson with learning.<br />

Amidst criticisms against the former Governor of Anambra State for not ensuring that his Sister was buried like people of his status would ordinarily do, Obi, while answering questions from Journalist after the requiem mass said he was aware of the criticisms, but that those not happy should respect what the family has chosen to do.<br />
<br />
Asked what informed the decision, Obi said that he would not speak for Adani or Obi’s family, but that he was personally pleased with what people call ordinary burial that was accorded his sister. Obi said it had always been his belief that money should be spent on the living and those in need of help rather than on those that were already dead.<br />
<br />
Hs words: “Sometimes I shudder on what people do for the dead as if they are marketing commodity. All the dead needs from the living is decent burial after they must have taken care of him while living. As I Catholic What I owe her now are prayers and booking of masses for happy repose of her soul and not an opportunity to display wealth that should rather be used to add value to humanity.”<br />

Obi lamented that Igbos are spending unnecessary money in burials and other celebrations, saying that what Igbos usually spend in a week on burials on other social events can rehabilitate over hundred schools and at least can be used to build a factory.<br />

Obi who commended some bishops that have started to look into the cost of burial, said he personally shunned adverts and other gifts from people in support of the burial of his sister and that he rather asked anybody that wanted to buy anything for him should give him the cash.<br />
<br />
He said from the money he collected, he would add to it and rehabilitate a school as well as build a brand new Health Centre in honour of her Sister at Adani, where she was married to. “I think she will be happier that his death has brought succour to the people rather than in the number of cows killed for her, which may end up causing health issues to some people.”<br />
<br />
Speaking on the issue of brochure for burial, Obi said that brochures should be simple to reflect the mood of the time rather than showcases of the Person’s life which it has been turned into. “Even from the angle of creating unnecessary burden to ourselves, have you asked yourself the stress involved in countless calls and emails to people for condolence messages that would be published in a brochure? I mean, all these things are unnecessary burdens”, Obi concluded.</div>

A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN); a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome; and legal practitioner, Dr. Konyinsola Ajayi, have disagreed on an order by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for the transfer of suspects arrested in Kwara State over allegations of murder and criminal conspiracy.<br />

The lawyers made their positions known in separate interviews with newsmen on Friday.<br />
<br />
The police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, had said the suspects were transferred to Abuja for further investigation in the allegations levelled against them.<br />
<br />
The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who is from Kwara State, had claimed on Wednesday during a senate plenary that the suspects’ transfer was part of a grand plot by the Inspector General of Police to frame him.<br />
<br />
On whether the IGP’s order for the suspects’ transfer to Abuja was lawful, Falana said it was not unusual for the investigation of criminal cases to be transferred from any of the states of the federation to Abuja, adding that the action would not stop the prosecution of such cases in the states where offences were committed.<br />
<br />
According to the SAN, the investigation of cases can be transferred to Abuja “if, for instance, the Inspector General of Police receives a petition that there is manipulation of such cases at the local or zonal level.”<br />
<br />
He said, “In this particular instance, since the police claim that these criminal suspects have made confessional statements, the investigation should be speedily concluded so that all those who are indicted are charged to court.<br />
<br />
“Under the law, you cannot charge them to court in Abuja, they have to be charged to court where the offence was committed but on a regular basis in Nigeria, every state police command is regularly directed to send case files to Abuja based usually on petitions, either by the complainant or the accused person that manipulation is suspected locally or at the zonal level.<br />
<br />
“I have handled cases in Kwara where my clients were referred to Abuja as suspects and that is my experience in all states of the country. But at the end of every investigation, the case file is sent to the Attorney General of the Federation, who will advise the police to charge to court. If it is a state offence, the suspect will be charged in the state High Court and if it is a federal offence, the suspect will be charged in the appropriate Federal High Court.”<br />
<br />
However, Ozekhome said the investigation and prosecution of the case should be done in Kwara State, adding that what he saw playing out in the matter was “very dirty politics.”<br />
<br />
He said, “The suspects were arrested in Kwara State for an offence allegedly committed in Kwara and they made their statements in Kwara and the statements made had been taken by the police and the court registry, which said it had proffered first information referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal advice.<br />
<br />
“It is within the purview of the DPP of the state to give the legal advice as to whether or not there is a prima facie case established against the alleged cult members, such as to warrant them to be put in the dock for trial. This is a state offence and under the constitution, there are 36 states in Nigeria with a Federal Capital Territory.”<br />
<br />
Ozekhome said the story would be more plausible that the suspects were “merely” being taken from Ilorin to Abuja for the purpose of possibly torturing them to alter their statements, “which are already in the public domain anyway, for the purpose of implicating some people.”<br />
<br />
“I’m greatly disturbed by the direction of this country, and as we move towards 2019.  he asked.<br />
<br />
In his opinion, Ajayi described as a dangerous precedent a situation whereby a case already concluded by the police in a state would be reopened by the Inspector General of Police.<br />
<br />
The lawyer, however, said highest police authorities had the right to further investigate any case they deemed fit.<br />
<br />
Be that as it may, Ajayi said the Inspector General of Police must be transparent and show impartiality in his work.</div>

Preye Aganaba, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention Committee has said that the Bayelsa State Government has denied the party a permit to use the multipurpose hall within the stadium for its state congress.<br />

Aganaba, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, also alleged that the Bayelsa Government was doing everything possible to frustrate the conduct of APC State Congress slated for today.<br />
<br />
He said the party executive in Bayelsa applied for the use of the facility officially, adding that the state government, therefore, had no reason to deny the APC its use.<br />
<br />
“It is true that the state government is denying us the use of stadium for our state congress meant to take place in Bayelsa on Saturday (today).<br />
<br />
“We have properly applied and we were not told that the facility will not be available for us, to our surprise, up till now the state government has refused to approve the facility for us,´´ he said.<br />
<br />
He added that the APC in Bayelsa had been peaceful and orderly as revealed in its just-concluded Ward and Local Government Congresses, saying that there was assurance that Saturday´s state congress would be crisis-free.<br />
<br />
“The government must be told that we are all indigenes of the state, we are not foreigners.<br />
<br />
“We have right to association and to belong to any political party of our choice, so we don’t deserve to be treated like outcasts,” he said.<br />
<br />
He, therefore, urged the state government to have a rethink, adding that it would amount to political intolerance if the state government refused APC the use of a public place such as the stadium.</div>

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has called on state governments to partner with the various electricity Distribution Companies to ensure improved power delivery.<br />

Fashola made the call on Saturday in Enugu when he led a delegation on a courtesy visit to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.<br />
<br />
He said the partnership was to identify areas of intervention by states in power distribution, adding that the federal, states and local governments are part owners of DisCos.<br />
<br />
The minister said 60 per cent shares of the companies were sold to the private sector while the remaining 40 per cent belong to the three tiers of government.<br />
<br />
Fashola expressed dissatisfaction with the rift between the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company and the state government and called for amicable resolution of the differences.<br />
<br />
“If I may advise, quarrelling with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company is not the way to go and my advice is based on what I know.<br />
<br />
“I gave this advice for a couple of reasons, 60 per cent share of Enugu DisCo was sold to the private sector like other distribution companies in the country.<br />
<br />
“The owners of the remaining 40 per cent are the federal, state and local governments, so it seems to me that the more we quarrel with the companies, the more we quarrel with ourselves.<br />
<br />
“State governments must understand that they are part and parcel of the DisCos and so, they have a responsibility to ensure that they contribute their quota to make the companies work,” he said.<br />
<br />
Fashola said the generating companies had 2000 megawatts of power that could not be distributed because of inadequate transformers and other distribution facilities.<br />
<br />
He said the Federal Government had privatized the power sector and called on state governments to pass laws that would give them the right of way for distribution expansion.<br />
<br />
The minister urged the state government to take advantage of the various initiatives of the Federal Government to boost power distribution in their states.<br />
<br />
He said the eligible customer policy was to enable consumers to take power directly from the generating companies without having to go through the distribution companies.<br />
<br />
The minister said the policy was designed to encourage heavy consumers of energy to build their own distribution network to take power directly from the generation companies if they were not satisfied with DisCos services.<br />
<br />
According to him, the mini-grid regulation policy allows people who are building power systems that are one megawatt and below to do so and distribute the power without having to apply for a license.<br />
<br />
In his remark, Ugwuanyi commended the minister for the visit and added that it was reflection of his personal commitment to ensure timely execution of federal projects in the state.<br />
<br />
He revealed that the deplorable state of federal roads in the state had aided criminal activities and exposed the people to deadly hazards.<br />
<br />
Ugwuanyi commended the Federal Government for the steps being taken to address the problems, adding that he was optimistic that the visit would ensure speedy execution of federal projects in the state.<br />
<br />
The governor said the state had executed various federal projects and called for reimbursement to the state government.</div>

The Governor of Imo State , Rochas Okorocha , has accused the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress , Chief John Oyegun, of collaborating with the National Organising Secretary of the party , Sen . Osita Izunaso, to cause problem in the state chapter of the party.<br />

Okorocha , who accused Oyegun of being on “a vendetta mission against him ” following his position on the protracted tenure elongation for the national leadership of the party, said he ( Okorocha ) remained the face of the APC in the South - East.<br />
<br />
Okorocha spoke in a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemedo.<br />
<br />
He challenged the members of the party fighting him to allow party congresses to hold in the 305 wards in the state than to “run to Abuja to manipulate the process . ”<br />
The statement read in part , “The so - called Imo stakeholders can only ‘ cage ’ Governor Rochas Okorocha like they have claimed in the media in the offices of the National Chairman of the party , Chief John Oyegun and the National Organising Secretary of the Party , Chief Osita Izunaso, who are on vendetta mission against the governor over his innocent and patriotic stand on the issue of tenure elongation.<br />
<br />
“And in any case , only ingrates can claim caging the man God used to uplift them politically . All those in the insolvent group called coalition are all beneficiaries of Okorocha ’ s political successes in Imo. ”<br />
The Imo State governor said he thought that the outcome of the Anambra State governorship election would have made some of the NWC members of the party to be in a position to “detach noise making from reality . ”<br />
<br />
Okorocha further stressed that the recently held APC ward congress in the state was marred by confusion and controversies .<br />
In another statement , the governor stated that the state ’ s Independent National Electoral Commission had released the report of the congress , which he said had confirmed that sensitive materials , including result sheets , were not provided during the election.<br />
<br />
It claimed that the state ’ s INEC Administrative Secretary, Mr . T . O. N. Ongele , confirmed that the exercise was characterised , “in its entirety ” , with confusion and controversies.<br />
<br />
The statement read in part , “ It is pertinent to state that the ward congress in its entirety was characterised by confusion and controversies as reported by the officers who monitored the congress at the various wards and local government areas .<br />
“At a point , we were told that the Congress Committee Panel that was posted to Imo State was swapped with that of Anambra State , but no letter to that effect was received by the Resident Electoral Commissioner.<br />
<br />
“In some of the local government areas, the INEC observers reported that result sheets were not provided and in some areas , electoral personnel were not seen . In some other instances, the INEC monitors were told on arrival that the congress had been concluded . In some other places , there was no evidence that the congress took place. ”<br />
<br />
The statement quoted the Electoral Officer for Mbaitoli Local Government Council, Mary Odilinye , as saying that INEC staff were redeployed to various party officers to monitor the exercise but that on reaching there , the different party offices were locked up .</div>

Don Dee as he is fondly known in the Somolu area of Lagos, is quite an intelligent young man. A graduate from the Olabisi Onabanjo Univeristy, Ogun State, the 34-year-old, who refused to disclose his real name when our correspondent met him through the help of a very close acquaintance, said that failure to find a job three years after leaving school pushed him into cybercrime popularly known as ‘Yahoo yahoo’ in many parts of Nigeria today. In the five years that he had been into this ‘business’, DD as some prefer to call him, told <i>Punch Newspaper</i> that he had made quite a fortune, establishing a few investments and significantly scaling up his living standard.<br />

“Within the first five months I started this work, I bought a Honda Accord car mostly known as Baby boy,” the 34-year-old said proudly as two of his trusted allies in the ‘business’ walked into the tiny but heavily air-conditioned bar of one of the hotels in the area that has become their home. “Since that time, I have used several cars and done a lot of good things for myself, siblings and even parents from what I have made from this hustle. It’s been tough but we are making the money,” he added, as all three men smiled with some sense of pride and fulfillment.<br />
<br />
But as much as the bucks have been rolling in for Don Dee, it has not been all rosy. Unlike in the past when he painted the town ‘red’ with his ill-gotten wealth, winning over new followers for himself by the minute, he has been forced to change his mode of operation today as a result of the increased onslaught on Internet fraudsters by law enforcement agencies in the country. For instance, despite boasting of two exotic rides – a 2015 Acura ZDX and a 2016 Lexus RX 450h, the 34-year-old now has to rely on commercial transportation especially taxis ordered through mobile applications to move around town during the daytime. Night time is the only period he rocks his ‘machines’ these days, he revealed painfully.<br />
<br />
“This is part of the strategy many of us adopt these days just to avoid attracting undue attention to ourselves especially from SARS operatives and other law enforcement agencies constantly on our trail,” the 34-year-old said, clenching his fist as if ready to crush a foe’s skull. “If you drive these big cars during the daytime, you’ll only be inviting these people to come after you and make life difficult for you. But at nighttime, the harassment is very low, so you could move around peacefully with your flashy car even though you still have to give the regular tips to policemen who are on the road,” he said.<br />

Apart from largely relying on public transportation to meet up with important appointments during the daytime nowadays, the young man also keeps away all expensive items like jewellery and also appears as simple as possible to avoid giving himself away as a ‘Yahoo’ or ‘Gee boy’ as some prefer to call them. In addition, the hotel Don Dee and his friends live in is said to be owned by a retired military officer, thereby making the place a fortress and very difficult for other law enforcement agencies to burst and make arrests. Though accommodation there is more expensive than in most hotels in its class, patrons like the ‘Internet hustlers’ say the peace they experience at the place compensates for every other thing.<br />
<br />
“I have a house in town but I hardly go there for security reasons,” the young man continued. “The SARS guys would always get that information and come after me just to collect money. It is for that reason that I and my guys stay in this hotel because they cannot come in here to pick anyone. They know the man who owns this place and won’t dare to come in here,” he added boastfully as one of the other two men signalled a hotel staff to deliver a bottle of a popular brand of whisky, an energy drink, small bucket of ice and a few glass cups to the table where the friendly interaction was taking place.<br />

But surprisingly as it sounds, Don Dee and his gang are not the only ‘Yahoo boys’ that have devised new tactics to escape the prying eyes of law enforcement officers constantly on their trail, they are among a growing list splattered all over the country that have mastered different and ingenious survivalist strategies to stay ahead of the chasing pack.<br />

For example, apart from also abandoning his rented apartment in the Anthony area of Lagos to live in an hotel reportedly guarded by military men contracted by the owner in nearby Mende, a small community at the base of Maryland, a sprawling neighbourhood in the heart of Lagos, Taiwo or Tee Money as he is widely known within his circle, hardly rides his 2015 Toyota Camry fondly nicknamed ‘Muscle’ in local parlance during the daytime so as not to fall into the hands of “enemies” as he described law enforcement officers like men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad. While narrating what the experience of the last few months has been as a ‘Gee boy’ especially with the increased war waged against people like him by government agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the 28-year-old told our correspondent that he has had to tone down on his flamboyant dressing and lifestyle to avoid being easily marked and arrested. Before now, Taiwo moved about with at least two expensive mobile phones each costing around N300, 000 and other items needed to aid his ‘business’.<br />
<br />
“For several weeks now, I have not been going out with my expensive phones and other mobile gadgets because that would easily expose me as a ‘working boy’,” the young man, who our correspondent also met earlier in the week at the hotel he lives through the help of a close contact, said. “Once those gadgets are noticed on me by those SARS operatives or even normal policemen, they would want to stop and check through them and that could easily expose me.<br />

“I have a good car but as a result of current development, it is safer to drive only at night when most roads would be free and one can apply some speed to avoid any sort of tracking.<br />
<br />
“In fact, since EFCC and SARS increased the tempo of their search on us, I have had to cut my hair low and avoid wearing clothes that would even make you suspect me to be a ‘Gee’ in any way. If you knew the way I dressed before and now, you’d realise a whole lot of difference. This is necessary just to avoid giving yourself away to these guys who are really ready to mess up anyone caught nowadays,” he disclosed.<br />
<br />
<br />
The 28-year-old told revealed that his apartment at Anthony had been raided twice by law enforcement officials following tip-offs by some individuals, hence his decision to move in permanently to the hotel he said promised relative safety and comfort – two very important elements to the success of any ‘Yahoo yahoo’ business, according to him.<br />
<br />
“Without peace of mind, you can’t do well for yourself in this line,” Taiwo cut in sharply. “You need to be safe and comfortable for you to be able to hit it big in this ‘game’. And that is why many of us stay in secure environments to operate. Though it strains the pocket, it is the best way to avoid unnecessary harassment from those on our trail,” he added.<br />
<br />
While the likes of Don Dee and Tee Money have abandoned their rented apartments to become permanent guests in hotels guarded by soldiers contracted by owners in an attempt to avoid EFCC and SARS raids, a handful of others yet to hit it big from the fraudulent act have equally devised their own formula of staying ahead of the chasing pack.<br />
<br />
Findings revealed how most of those in the ‘business’ have abandoned neighbourhoods notorious for cybercrime like FESTAC, Ajao Estate, Egbeda and Ilupeju for less fancied areas especially in developing towns like Ikorodu, Ayobo, Iba and even Mowe in Ogun State just to avoid being noticed and possibly arrested. To further conceal their identities, these guys have learnt to keep very low profiles in those places – unlike in the past when their screaming lifestyles announced them to neighbours and people around such localities.<br />
<br />
“I had to move to my cousin’s place in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu two months ago when raids by law enforcement agencies became a regular thing in Ajao Estate where I have my house,” Josh, one 30-year-old, who told our correspondent that he has made over N20m from cybercrime since coming into the ‘business’ in 2016, said. “As a result of the way most of the ‘Gee boys’ at Ajao used to display their wealth, we became a target for law enforcement officials who just want to extort money from us. I had to run down to my cousin’s place after two of my very close friends were arrested.<br />
<br />
“Nobody knows me here or even what I do. My cousin is the one using my car for now, he works with a bank while I use taxi or even commercial bus if I need to go out just to avoid any sort of suspicion that can cause problem for me.<br />
<br />
“It has not been easy coping in this environment considering where I was coming from but I have learnt to adapt so as not to expose myself unnecessarily.<br />
<br />
“This is the only thing I have been doing to sustain myself since graduating from the polytechnic after failing to find a job. Since 2016 when I started, I have made over N20m but I am willing to stop and do something legitimate if I can get a good job. Until then, I will hold on to this as much as I can,” he stated.<br />
<br />
Beyond moving into hotels guarded by military men and also relocating to developing towns in border communities between Lagos and Ogun states, most ‘Gee boys’, according to fresh findings, have also found a safe haven in a popular government-owned housing estate on Victoria Island where many apartment owners have responded to the demand created by these clandestine migrations to rent out their tastefully-furnished flats to guys in this category at very high prices. These service flats, our correspondent discovered, are given out at between N30, 000 to N35, 000 per day. They are very comfortable and require guests to only move in with their clothes – just like in a hotel.<br />
<br />
“My cousin who is a ‘Yahoo boy’ puts up in one of those flats with five other friends due to the comfort and relative safety of the place,” Frank Idemudia, a car dealer based in Ogba, told our correspondent during a recent encounter. “He initially told me that he was lodged at a hotel in VI but when he sent the address to me, I was confused, because I was wondering how a hotel would be inside that estate.<br />
<br />
“Eventually when I got there, I realised it was a flat that the owner had equipped like a hotel and rented out to them. The place was very comfortable, Everything was there. Later, my cousin told me that the six of them contributed to pay the daily charges and that they preferred to stay there because nobody could come and burst them there unlike normal hotels in town where they could be easily discovered.<br />
<br />
“I was really surprised because I never knew that these guys have taken their operations to this level. Only God knows other tactics they’ll soon be adopting to avoid the law enforcement officials who are after them these days,” he said.<br />
<br />
This new trend has found its way into other housing estates between Victoria Island and Lekki where many flat owners now lavishly equip and rent them out to ‘Yahoo boys’ desperate to escape the prying eyes of law enforcement agents. These guys pay good money to enjoy the relative comfort and safety of those places.<br />
<br />
“Many big ‘Gee boys’ live in these ‘home hotels’ in posh estates in VI, Lekki and even Ikoyi because they feel that it would be difficult for any police officer to harass or arrest anyone there. The general feeling is that once you reside in such places, you are considered to be from a wealthy background and are into legitimate activities, so there is hardly any sort of suspicion.<br />
<br />
“In recent months, I have had a number of these guys approach me to help them get ‘home hotels’ on the axis because they were tired of having to run from SARS operatives all the time,” a housing agent at the Maroko (Sandfill) area of Victoria Island, Kunle Ololade, told our correspondent. “In fact many people who own apartments in those places have been catching in on this situation to make good money,” he added.<br />
<br />
Coming under intense scrutiny in recent weeks by law enforcement agencies and public opinion leaders across the country, ‘Yahoo boys’ are increasingly finding it difficult to operate openly despite crafting ingenious means to avoid being noticed. For example, on May 11, 2018, operatives of the EFCC raided a popular night club in the Ikoyi area of Lagos, whisking away about 12 Internet fraudsters with their exotic cars following an intelligence report.<br />
<br />
That same day, the anti-graft agency also arrested six suspected Internet fraudsters also in a secluded apartment in the Kubwa area of Abuja. According to the spokesperson for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, the operation was carried out by the advance fee fraud section of the commission following an intelligence report.<br />
<br />
“Surveillance was carried out and the identity and location of the fraudsters who specialise in defrauding innocent citizens both within and outside the country through internet was identified,” he said.<br />
<br />
In March this year, the Cross River State Police Command announced the arrest of three Internet fraudsters with charms, which they used in defrauding and dispossessing victims of money and other valuables.<br />
<br />
Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said the young men confessed to belonging to a syndicate that uses charms to hypnotise potential victims.<br />
<br />
That was not all. In April 2012, an undergraduate of the OOU, Olasaidi Dare, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for cybercrime following his arrest by the police. Two months after that period, a Federal High Court in Kaduna State sentenced one Imonina Kingsley to 20 years imprisonment for defrauding an Australian national. While condemning the act, the EFCC that year said it secured the conviction of over 288 persons for similar crimes.<br />
<br />
Troubled by the new tactics now adopted by ‘Yahoo boys’ to evade arrest especially relocating to coded areas within Lagos or completely outside the city, an Assistant Police Commissioner, Yomi Shogunle, in a recent post on his Twitter page, said that there was no longer a hiding place for those in the act.<br />
<br />
“To all Yahoo Yahoo Boys relocating from Lagos State because of fear of going to jail over financial crimes, you can run but you can’t hide. The long arm of the law will catch up with you anywhere you run to as long as you indulge in illegal activities,” he had posted.<br />
<br />
Also urging stiffer punishments for cyber thieves, Chief Executive Officer of 360group, Noble Igwe, called on the EFCC and other law enforcement agencies to spread their searchlight to other businesses used as decoy to perpetrate such crimes.<br />
<br />
In a post on twitter, Igwe, who has since drawn the ire of others, said, “Record labels, estate/ property business, car selling business are all major 419 /fraud fronts in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“EFCC needs to have a waiter stationed at every nightclub within Lekki and VI. Online stores and stores on Admiralty/Fola Osibo in Lekki are used for money laundering.<br />
<br />
“Armed robbers on Instagram are regarded as ‘G boys’ but in reality, theirs is a different type of stealing.<br />
<br />
“People steal and then turn around to blame the government for making them criminals. Anyone that defends a criminal is a criminal and while we have a list for people advocating rape culture, we should also have one for such people. An armed robber is an armed robber. You are a thief armed with a computer.”<br />
<br />
Though there are conflicting accounts on the origin of cybercrime or ‘Yahoo yahoo’ in Nigeria, analysts say the trend gained momentum in the early 1990s, booming in the following decade after the arrival of cheap, affordable Internet in most parts of the country. The failure of many youths to find jobs or other legitimate means of livelihood fuelled the crisis, luring many in this category into the illicit trade of scamming, according to sociologist, Sandra Ekanem.<br />
<br />
“Beyond the advent of cheap, affordable Internet, it is the failure of the society to provide jobs that would have engaged idle minds that triggered ‘Yahoo yahoo’ and other crimes we now face in this country.<br />
<br />
“Even though having no means of livelihood is not an excuse for engaging in criminal activities, it is a huge contributory factor the society must address to solve this problem,” she said.<br />
<br />
According to latest statistics, over 30 million youths across the country are said to be unemployed and without any means of livelihood. Experts say if this is left unaddressed, there could be bigger problems in the days ahead.<br />
<br />
“Statistically, Nigeria has a youth population of about 67 million, aged between 15 and 35 years. Forty two per cent of these young people don’t have means of livelihood while only about 20 per cent have more than secondary certificate.<br />
<br />
“What these figures are simply saying is that majority of the youths in our country find it difficult to make ends meet, which is very dangerous for the society,” Director-General of Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Prof Danladi Matawal, said recently.<br />
<br />
In addition to providing jobs for the country’s teeming unemployed population, experts also urge the tightening and enforcement of existing laws as a way of curbing cybercrime. But while government is being awaited to act, those in the illicit trade appears to be perfecting new ways to escape their crushing rod.<br />

By now you must have watched the embarrassing video of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, giving a speech somewhere in Kano. If you have not watched it, then do yourself a favour and please watch it. You can thank me later. Or not.<br />

The video is beyond embarrassing. I am not even sure that the word to describe that video has been coined by linguists. I am still searching. I may be wrong.<br />
<br />
But truly you need to watch the video to understand the ineptitude of the Buhari administration which has led to the unprecedented nationwide insecurity in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
How can a man who cannot express himself be expected to expressly implement Nigeria’s policing plan? How did IGP Idris rise to his exalted position? Where his promotion examinations administered in his native language? Too many questions are begging for answers. Too many.<br />
Now, we know the real reason why the Inspector General of Police failed to honour the Nigerian Senate’s summons. The poor man did not want to expose his inability to read and understand the English language. We have a President who preferred to hire 13 SANs rather than just provide his WAEC Certificate, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman who wears a Muhammadu Buhari re-election lapel pin, a minister of finance who cannot perform elementary mathematics and now an IGP who cannot read a speech in simple English. How did we get here? This government looks more like Humpty Dumpty and the King’s clowns!<br />
<br />
First, R. Kelly released the hit single IGNITION. Not to be outdone, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, who is also a budding rapper, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, released his own rap single titled TRANSMISSION. The song is so hot that iTunes and other streaming music platforms crashed the moment it was released. I also received word that the Transmission Company of Nigeria has appointed IGP Ibrahim Kpotum Idris as its Brand Ambassador. Congratulations sir!<br />
How many times do you have to say the word transmission? Z$ 1 million to the first person who can tell us how many times Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris used the word ‘TRANSMISSION’ while rapping (or reading) his now infamous Kano speech. Nigeria urgently needs to solve this national dilemma!<br />
<br />
But on a serious note, the case of IGP Ibrahim Kpotum Idris is a good lesson on why a State Commissioner of Police should not be promoted over his more capable seniors and made Inspector General of Police. The man is obviously not qualified for the job. Every sensitive security position does not have to be held by a Northern Muslim. It is this type of nepotism that has brought Nigeria to this sorry level under Buhari!<br />
<br />
And it was rather comical for the Presidency, through Abike Dabiri, to say that IGP Ibrahim Kpotum Idris’ ‘TRANSMISSION’ rap video was doctored. Well again, it is not impossible. Since that is what the Buhari administration is claiming, can they please produce the original video before it was ‘doctored’? Or have rats eaten the original tape?<br />
<br />
I think that rather than being embarrassed by the IGP’s video, the Buhari government should be proud of producing such a talented appointee. People keep saying Buhari’s cabinet lacks talent. Well, they can point to Idris as a talented rapper and shut the critics up!<br />
<br />
The Idris video should be a wake-up call for President Muhammadu Buhari. After the Inspector General disobeyed (allegedly) the President’s orders to relocate to Benue state to personally take responsibility of bringing the state of insecurity there to an end, one would have expected the President to at least sanction the police boss for his gross insubordination and incompetence.<br />
<br />
If the incompetence of the IGP was not clear to President Buhari then, it must at least be glaring now. It is sad to see the level of decay and morass that the Nigerian Police Force has fallen under because of the President’s penchant for nepotistic appointments.<br />
<br />
As it stands now, there is no salvific value in the top leadership of the Force and it is not just the IGP. On the morning of Tuesday May 15, 2018, Nigerians woke up to the strange sight of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, giving an interview on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a breakfast TV show on Channels Television, wearing a lapel pin promoting the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
Not since the dark days of General Sani Abacha have Nigerians seen this type of disturbing behaviour. Nigerian Civil servants are mandated by law to be politically neutral in order that all civil servants can render unbiased and loyal service to any government that comes to power legitimately, irrespective of the political party that produced such a government.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, in a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly regarding the International Code of Conduct for Public Officials, for which Nigeria is a signatory and bound by, the UN stated in the 11th principle that: “the political or other activity of public officials outside the scope of their office shall, in accordance with laws and administrative policies, not be such as to impair public confidence in the impartial performance of their functions and duties”.<br />
<br />
That being the case, how can President Muhammadu Buhari, who swore on the Quran to abide by the Constitution of Nigeria which produced our civil service, stand idly by while his political appointee brazenly and with impunity goes against domestic and international laws as well as the principles of natural justice?<br />
<br />
Someone should remind Ibrahim Magu that it was the PDP that created the EFCC and not Muhammadu Buhari. And in the 16 years that the PDP governed Nigeria, not one of the chairmen of the EFCC appointed by PDP ever wore a lapel pin promoting the re-election of the PDP President who appointed him. If they had done so, would the EFCC have survived long enough for Magu to perpetrate his shameful aberration? Just a little food for thought for Magu and his god, Buhari.<br />
<br />
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, is meant to be a neutral enforcer of Nigeria’s laws on economic and Financial Crimes, but when the head of the body brazenly shows his partiality, how can those laws be applied impartially? How can an open sympathizer of the All Progressive Congress be expected to conduct a fair and balance war on corruption?<br />
Perhaps now, Nigerians and the international community will believe me when I say that the EFCC under Buhari is nothing more than the armed wing of the APC. The agency has in effect been ‘transmission’ (apologies to the IGP) to the Gestapo of the Presidency.<br />
<br />
And the sad thing is that, with the evidence of decay so glaring all around him, President Buhari insists on insulting the intelligence of Nigerians by claiming that he has performed better than the Jonathan administration.<br />
<br />
Nigeria was the world’s third fastest growing economy under Jonathan. We are not even in the top 100 today. Nigeria was 136 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index under Jonathan. We are 148 today. Yet Buhari has the guts to say he performed better than Jonathan? Perhaps it is not only his IGP that has Transmission issues! Obviously the President has Transmission problem. He is unable to see reality and transmit it to his mind for appropriate interpretation.<br />

More than 100 people have died after a Boeing 737 airliner crashed near Cuba’s main airport in Havana, the country’s worst air disaster in decades.<br />

The plane, which was nearly 40 years old, was carrying 104 passengers and six crew members.<br />

The Boeing 737-201 crashed at 12:08 (16:08 GMT) on Friday, shortly after taking off from Havana on an internal flight to Holguin on the east of the island.<br />

All six crew members on board were Mexican and the majority of the passengers were Cuban, with five foreigners reported to be among them.<br />
<br />
“There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,” Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, said after visiting the crash site.

Darren Moore has been appointed as new head coach of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, the club said in a statement on its website on Friday.<br />

The 44-year-old was placed in charge of the team after the exit of Alan Pardew in April.<br />

Moore’s stewardship over the final six games in the English Premier League could not save the team as it got relegated to the championship division.<br />

Announcing the appointment, Chief Executive of the club, Mr Mark Jenkins, said the impression Moore made across all areas of the club delivered a powerful case for his promotion to head coach.<br />
<br />
“We are delighted to confirm Darren as our new head coach and we look forward to his continuing the excellent work we saw when he stepped into the role in an interim capacity in the first week of April.<br />
<br />
“He embodies the spirit of the club and the spirit of what we are striving to achieve in this new chapter ahead.<br />
<br />
“We conducted a thorough process of recruitment but Darren’s powerful impact on the pitch and across all areas of the club established him as the outstanding candidate.<br />

“We suffered a torrid season but if there was a redeeming feature it was to see Darren at work over those final weeks, galvanising the club and getting everyone positive again.<br />
<br />
“We all know we have a challenging summer ahead of us but from talking at length to Darren about his plans, they are challenges he is ready to meet head on,” said Mark.<br />

Moore’s effort in his most recent capacity saw him named as the Premier League’s Manager of the Month after that memorable sequence of results which brought victories over Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham.<br />

He will set about assembling his backroom team as a priority before finalising plans for pre-season and working closely with Technical Consultant, Giuliano Terraneo, over player recruitment.<br />

Reacting, Moore said this was an opportunity to move the club to the right direction.<br />

“I am obviously proud to accept this role and also extremely excited.<br />
<br />
“We have a big summer ahead of us, a lot of hard work we need to get in now. I’m going all out to try to get those plans and personnel in place to make sure we’ve got everything ready.<br />

Stoke City announced on Friday that manager Paul Lambert had left his position at the relegated Premier League club by mutual consent.<br />

“The club would like to thank Paul for his work over the past four months and wish him well for the future,” said a statement on Stoke’s website.<br />

“While he was unable to guide us to Premier League safety after being appointed in January, it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort, professionalism and dedication on his part.”<br />

Lambert replaced the sacked Mark Hughes but was unable to turn around the fortunes of the club, who finished second-from-bottom of the Premier League.<br />

“Paul would like to thank the board, players and staff for the opportunity and their support,” the statement added. “He would also like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. While looking forward to his next challenge, he would like to wish the club every success next season.<br />

Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, on Thursday, confirmed the results for 18 chairmanship seats out of the 23 Local Governments in the just concluded May 12 local councils polls.<br />

The chairman of the Commission, Dr. Saratu Dikko who confirmed the results in Kaduna, said the All Progressives Congress (APC)  won 14  local government chairmanship seats, while the PDP won four seats.<br />
<br />
Dikko said the commission would hold elections  in the remaining five local government areas on June 2, 2018.<br />
<br />
According to her, the APC won in Birnin-Gwari, Giwa, Igabi, Ikara, Kaduna North, Sabon-Gari, Kagarko, Kubau,  Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sanga, Soba and Zaria, while the PDP won in Jema’a, Kachia, Kauru and Zango-Kataf.<br />
<br />
According to her,  Kaura, Jaba and Kajuru local governments would hold fresh elections on June 2.<br />
<br />
“This concludes the confirmation of the result,” she said, adding that the outstanding elections in four wards in Chikun and two wards  in Kaduna South local governments would also hold on the same day.<br />
<br />
She said Certificates of Return would be issued to the winners on Saturday, May 19, 2018.</div>

The Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, Friday said that nobody can cage him politically.<br />

Okorocha through a release to newsmen in Owerri, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, was responding to a statement credited to Imo APC stakeholders led by Senator Ifeanyi Araraume.<br />

The governor also said that he was caged by Araraume’s group in the office of the National Chairman of APC, John Oyegun and that of the National Orgarnizing Secretary, Mr. Osita Izunaso.<br />
<br />
According to the release, “The so- called Imo stakeholders can only “cage” Governor Rochas Okorocha like they have claimed in the media in the offices of the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun and the National Organising Secretary of the Party, Chief Osita Izunaso.<br />
<br />
“Who are on vendetta mission against the governor over his innocent and patriotic stand on the issue of tenure elongation.<br />
“And in any case only ingrates can claim caging the man God used to uplight them politically. All those in the insolvent group called coalition are all beneficiaries of Okorocha’s political successes in Imo.<br />
<br />
“If they have the capacity why are they dodging going to the field for the congresses, but they preferred making away with the sensitive materials for the congresses and going into hotels to write results.<br />
<br />
“Mind you, Governor Okorocha has never played politics with the elite in the state. And that is part of their anger. The governor’s greatest political base and asset is the grassroot, that is still intact for him. These stakeholders are deceiving themselves. They know they cannot fly.<br />
<br />
“Rochas is the biggest asset of APC in the South-East and in Imo in particular. Even today, the only person the party needs to sustain Imo as APC state and make enroute into other states in the zone is Rochas Okorocha. Take it or leave it when the chips are down, the truth will become clearer.”</div>

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of connivance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the July 14 governorship election in the State by using students of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.<br />

The governor, who made this known while addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti, on Friday, described President Muhammadu Buhari’s comment that the Ekiti 2014 governorship election was characterized by “hanky panky”, as unfortunate, saying he was not surprised because the President was no longer in touch with realities and also not in charge of his own government.<br />
He said that the Vice Chancellor of FUOYE, Prof Kayode Soremekun, was a card-carrying member of the APC and a close ally of the party’s candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, accusing him of rigging elections for the APC in the past.<br />
<br />
Governor Fayose said “the idea behind this plot is to recruit APC members from neighbouring States, arm them with FUOYE students Identity Cards and use them as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers to perfect the planned rigging of the election. This will fail.”<br />
<br />
The statement reads; “Recall that the President said categorically that Ekiti State must be taken by the APC at all cost. Instead of his empty boast that his party must capture the State by whatever means, the President should rather tell Ekiti people what he has done for them in the last three and half years.<br />
<br />
“Today, we are beginning to receive signals to the effect that clandestine moves are being made to subvert the will of Ekiti people. With the failure of their “Ondo Option”, other evil means are now being devised.<br />
<br />
“Despite that we have over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State and it has been the general practice to engage the NYSC members in elections across the country, the APC in collusion with INEC has asked that students of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) be recruited as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.<br />
<br />
“We are in possession of an Internal Memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, FUOYE seeking registration of students of the University as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers for the Election.<br />
<br />
“As I speak, over 2,000 supposed FUOYE students have been registered; with a curious condition that they should provide Bank Account details of their close relations, apparently to avoid tracing any payment into their own accounts.<br />
<br />
“The question is; with over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State, what is the need for FUOYE students in an election that is holding in less than 2,200 polling units?<br />
<br />
“Our counsel is that parents, guardians and families of FUOYE students should prevail on their wards to shun this Greek gift and avoid being used by desperate politicians.<br />
<br />
“INEC, too, must come clean on this. The electoral umpire must tell the public the rationale behind the plot to jettison Youth Corps members for supposed FUOYE students.<br />
<br />
“On President Buhari’s reported comment that the Ekiti 2014 governorship election was characterized by “hanky panky”, I am not surprised at all because he is no longer in touch with realities. The president is not even in charge of his own government.<br />
<br />
“Therefore, I am not surprised that such a statement came from the president. That was the same President who said Nigerian youths are lazy and that Nigerians living abroad are criminals. He can also afford to indict his own country by saying that agencies of the federal government were involved in electoral fraud, even when the United States Government commended them.<br />
<br />
“The president runs to the United States of America at all times and believe in the US government even more than himself. This same US government said clearly that the election was free, fair and transparent.<br />
<br />
“However, let me tell the President and his men that they will be disgraced here in Ekiti because the power of the people is greater than the power of those in power.<br />
<br />
“We hereby call on all men of good conscience to stand up and be counted in the fight against dictatorship, election rigging and the plot to subvert democracy in Nigeria. 2019 general elections is close by and Ekiti as well as Osun elections are prelude to what to expect in 2019.<br />

“The international community must prevail on INEC and the Buhari administration to allow free, fair and credible election in Ekiti State.”</div>

Security has been beefed up around the All Progressives Congress secretariat in Lagos, ahead of the chapter’s state congress on Saturday.<br />

The News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who was at the ACME Road, Ikeja, secretariat of the party reports that scores of armed security officials were stationed around the secretariat, where the congress would be held.<br />
<br />
Just opposite the secretariat, some armed policemen were seen standing by an Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed there.<br />
<br />
The others were in three patrol vans watching around the secretariat to prevent any threats to security.<br />
<br />
Private security guards manning the secretariat gate were also seen screening visitors to the party office.<br />
<br />
However, the heavy security did not prevent some party members from staging a protest at the secretariat.<br />
<br />
No fewer than 100 protesters, all female, from the Odi-Olowo area of the state, protested the candidature of one Mrs Adeyemi Idera for an executive position in Saturday’s congress.<br />
<br />
The women, all carrying placards rejecting Idera, said the chieftain no longer enjoyed the support of members in Odi-Olowo.<br />
<br />
“We don’t want her. She should not represent us. She does not enjoy our support,’ Alhaja Mulikat Adeola, who led the protest said.<br />
<br />
Vice Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Funsho Ologunde, who addressed the protesters urged them to remain calm.<br />
<br />
He said the protest was not necessary as the chieftain’s name was not on the list of candidates.<br />
<br />
“We are in the month of Ramadan, so we should not embark on things that will wear us out.<br />
<br />
“The protest is not necessary, the name of Idera is not on the candidates’ list. That I can assure you,” he said.<br />
<br />
The protesters, thereafter, erupted in singing and dancing following Ologunde’s assurance.<br />
<br />
Speaking on preparations for the congress, Assistant Publicity of the party in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami, said all arrangements had been concluded.<br />
<br />
He said no fewer than 2500 delegates would elect 27 executive members at the congress.<br />
<br />
Salami said one of the executive positions would be reserved for a member living with disability in line with the party’s policy of inclusiveness.<br />
<br />
He said the security in place at the secretariat on Friday was a measure of the watertight security that would be in place at the congress proper on Saturday.<br />
<br />
“We are set for the congress on Saturday. The candidates have obtained forms and submitted.<br />
<br />
“All arrangements have been perfected including security; you can see the atmosphere, it is going to be watertight tomorrow.<br />
<br />
“We are set for our state congress and I can assure, it is going to be successful,” he said.<br />

The congress for the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been postponed to Monday.<br />

The postponing of the congress was confirmed on Friday morning by the State chairman of the party, Jones Erue as well as leader of the party in the state, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor.<br />
<br />
Though reason for the postponing of the congress could not be confirmed, a source at the party’s national secretariat disclosed to Vanguard that the incident was as a result of the discrepancy trailing the delegate list which was supposed to be used for the congress.</div>

Super Eagles left-back Bryan Idowu is set to miss the team’s farewell friendly game against the DR Congo on Monday May 28 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt due to FIFA’s new rule for players listed to play at the 21st World Cup starting next month in Russia.<br />

FIFA have told all 32 partcipating teams to ensure players listed for the World Cup observe a 10-day rest after their last game of the season as a means of ensuring they stay fresh.<br />

Idowu is likely to join 14 other Eagles stars who will miss the game due to the rule as the Russia-based defender is set to feature for his club Amkar Perm when they take a 2-0 lead to the Otkritie Arena on Sunday to play hosts FC Tambov in the second leg of the Russia Premier League qualification play-offs.<br />

Idowu was on for all 90 minutes in the first leg played on Thursday at the Zvezda Stadium.<br />
If he gets to play on Sunday, it means he will be ineligible for the DR Congo game.<br />
<br />
Already out of the game is team captain Mikel Obi who will be playing on Friday in the Chinese Super League as well as striker Odion Ighalo who will be in action with his Chinese club Saturday.<br />
Italy-based duo of Joel Obi of Torino and new invitee, Simeon Nwankwo, are also doubtful for the game if they should play for their respective Serie A clubs this weekend.</div>

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Imo stakeholders have said that they have made Gov. Rochas Okorocha politically irrelevant in their determination to rescue the party from imminent collapse in the state.<br />

Dr. Theo Ekechi, who spoke to newsmen after a close-door meeting with the APC national leadership on Thursday in Abuja, said the stakeholders had overwhelming pieces of evidence against Okorocha.<br />
<br />
This, he said, had made it impossible for the governor to get attention from any quarter in the state and in the South-East region.<br />
<br />
“There have been wide jubilation in Imo because we have rescued the party from Gov. Okorocha, we have made it impossible for him to get help from anywhere.<br />
<br />
“He cannot run to any political figure in the state because none is with him, he cannot approach any clergyman in the state.<br />
<br />
“In his desperation, he ran to Sokoto, Daura and even to the Vice President, but help has refused to come,” he said.<br />
<br />
Ekechi said Rochas’s inaction was responsible for the problems facing the party in the state and the South-East generally.<br />
<br />
In a petition submitted to the party’s national leadership, the stakeholders chronicled what they described as the governor’s sins and appealed for state of emergency in the state.<br />
<br />
He called on the party’s national chairman to bring to the notice of President Muhammadu Buhari the crisis in Imo before it completely gets out of hand.<br />
<br />
Ekechi alleged that the state was being mismanaged under Okorocha, adding that the governor was running the state like a personal estate.<br />
<br />
He also alleged that the governor was harassing and intimidating perceived opponents in the state.</div>

The Supreme Court has ordered a former Managing Director of the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, to return to the Federal High Court in Lagos to face his trial on N5bn fraud charges.<br />

The trial was prematurely terminated in April 2012 by Justice Charles Archibong, whose decision in the case later earned him a compulsory retirement from the bench.<br />
<br />
A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Tanko Muhammad unanimously affirmed the February 20, 2015, judgment of the Court of Appeal in Lagos which had overturned the Federal High Court’s decision striking out the charges.<br />
<br />
Justice Sidi Bage, who read the lead judgment of the apex court, said Akingbola’s appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s verdict lacked merit.<br />
<br />
He ordered that the case be remitted to the Federal High Court and handled by another judge in the Lagos Division and be given “expeditions trial”.<br />
<br />
Justice Archibong (now retired) had in a judgment delivered on April 2, 2012 struck out the 26 counts contained in a charge numbered FHC/L/443C/2013 filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against Akingbola on the grounds that the prosecution was not diligent in the handling of the case.<br />
<br />
The judge had described the EFCC prosecution team as a drain in the public purse and directed the Attorney-General of the Federation to disband the team.<br />
<br />
The judge’s decision in the case later earned him a compulsory retirement by the National Judicial Council.<br />
<br />
Commenting on the conduct of the judge in the case, a member of the apex court’s panel, Justice Kumai Akaahs, noted in his contribution that Justice Archibong acted like a military dictator.<br />
Justice Akaahs said Archibong “descended into the arena” and displayed his bias.</div>

The globally recognized first President in Africa who earned the sobriquet from the United States President, Donald Trump  re-affirmed his commitment to the safety of lives and properties in Nigeria after receiving briefing from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai at the state house Thursday evening.<br />

President Buhari who commended the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff in aligning with his vision on security, took to his official Facebook page to express his position of the efforts of the Nigerian Army.<br />
<br />
The Chief of Army Staff on his part said that the Nigerian Army will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to carry out all the directives of the Commander -in- Chief to achieve strategic objectives of the Nigerian government.<br />
<br />
“So, that is essentially why we had to deploy a battalion of soldiers to Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State in line with the Army’s guidelines.<br />
<br />
On the war against terrorism, the Chief of Army Staff hinted that the Nigerian Army has activated the last onslaught against Boko Haram.<br />
<br />
“The Nigerian Army is progressing very well and Nigerians should be rest assured that our ‘Operation Last Halt’ will further consolidate on the achievements so far made and we hope the Internally Displaced Persons in that area will go back to their communities and pick up their lives again,” he also added.<br />
<br />
“I received a briefing from the Chief of Army Staff this afternoon. The Army recently established a new battalion in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna State, in addition to other deployments in troubled parts of the country. As I’ve assured again and again, our commitment to the peace and security of Nigeria is total.”</div>
