The rift between John Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state, is obviously far from over.<br />

Rather than use the occasion of the launch of a book written in honour of President Muhammadu Buhari to settle their differences, the two leaders tactically avoided each other.<br />
<br />
At the event, which held at the International Conference Center (ICC), Abuja, dignitaries, including Oyegun and Tinubu, were invited to the podium for the presentation of the book.<br />
<br />
With Oyegun on the far left, at least five persons separated him from Tinubu.<br />
<br />
At the end of the presentation, the chairman walked past Tinubu before exchanging handshakes with other guests, including Yakubu Gowon, former head of state.<br />
<br />
However, some reports have it that they exchange brief pleasantries has proven by the photo.<br />
<br />
Oyegun and Tinubu fell out after the governorship primary election of the APC in Ondo state.<br />
<br />
While the appeal committee of the party ordered an annulment of the exercise on grounds of alleged irregularities, the national working committee (NWC) led by Oyegun overruled the panel.<br />
<br />
The NWC subsequently submitted the name of Rotimi Akeredolu, who emerged in the primary, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the APC candidate for the Ondo election.<br />
<br />
Tinubu had described Oyegun’s action as anti-democratic, calling on him to step down.<br />
<br />
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also frowned at Oyegun’s action, with Timi Frank, deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, mounting pressure on the chairman to quit office.

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the just concluded Edo election, Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu Monday took to the streets of Benin City calling for the cancellation of the results announced by INEC declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki, winner of the September 28 governorship election.<br />

It would be recalled that last week, supporters of the PDP governorship candidate took to the streets of Benin, protesting and condemning the result of the election which they said did not reflect the wishes of Edo voters.<br />
<br />
The protesters started at their march through the streets at the Ize-Iyamu Campaign office on Akpakpava Road and moved to several parts of the Benin metropolis such as First East Circular Road, Second East Circular Road, Dawson Road and New Benin before returning to the Ize-Iyamu Campaign office, where they gathered once again.<br />
<br />
They carried placards with inscriptions such as “INEC is biased, not independent; Return our stolen mandate; Police conspiracy with INEC to rigged the election; Return our stolen mandate to Ize-Iyamu and sang songs.<br />
<br />
Spokesman for the protesters, Rev Olu Martins, said it was historical and ironical that nine to 10 years ago, he was among the protesters, who occupied the streets of Benin to protest the injustice done Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the 2007 Edo State governorship election, adding that he was back in the streets this time around to protest an “electoral heist perpetrated by Oshiomhole.”<br />

He said, “We will not stop until what rightfully belongs to the people is returned to them. The challenge is not what happened on Wednesday, September 28th. It is the process.<br />

The Central Bank of Nigeria is set to borrow about N129.67bn ($403.01m) in short-dated Treasury bills at an auction on Wednesday.<br />

The Apex bank said it would raise N28bn in three-month paper, N33.49bn in six-month bills and N68.18bn in one-year bills.<br />

Payment for the purchases will be made on Thursday, a public notice by the Lender stated.<br />

The Federal Government issues Treasury bills to raise cash to fund the budget deficit, manage banking system liquidity and curb rising inflation.<br />
<br />
The nation’s interbank lending rates were flat at around 15.25 per cent for overnight lending on Friday, even as market liquidity dropped significantly because of persistent Treasury bill sales by the central bank.<br />
<br />
Traders said market liquidity should be below N100bn due to consistent cash withdrawal by the CBN via Treasury bill sales, although data on commercial lenders’ cash balance with the central bank was not available on Friday, Reuters reported.<br />
<br />
Traders said the CBN had sold around N1.2tn ($3.73bn) in Open Market Operations Treasury bills at 14 auctions in one month in its bid to reduce liquidity in the banking system and curb pressure on the foreign exchange market.<br />

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the Edo State governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu contested against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), not the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the APC victory in the election as “victory only made possible by the use of federal government agencies to subvert the will of the people.”<br />

Governor Fayose, who lamented that the win at all cost attitude of the APC was inimical to the sustenance of democracy in the country, said it was sad that instead of the people of Edo State electing their own governor, the APC conspired with INEC to foist its own governor on the people.<br />
<br />
Speaking on the outcome of the election through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said it was unfortunate that those whose change was made possible because the then PDP government allowed the people the freedom to make a choice have now eroded the independence of INEC.<br />
<br />
Governor Fayose said: “the stage for the manipulation of the election was set by the use of security agencies to postpone the election, even when there was no single security threat and what was witnessed in Edo State last Wednesday was the execution of the rigging plans perfected after the postponement.”<br />
<br />
He said it should be obvious to all lovers of democracy in Nigeria and the international community that the APC led federal government will never allow free and fair election in the country as the PDP and other opposition parties now contest elections against INEC.<br />
<br />
He noted that, “the power of the people to choose their governor was completely robbed at gunpoint in Edo State. Unfortunately too, these elements have even murdered the rights of Nigerians to protest against the subversion of their will and it is now obvious that only the insistence of Nigerians can save democracy in the country.<br />
<br />
“Like I have said before, we are already seeing signs of what to come in 2019 and Nigerians should know by now that it will only take their insistence for their votes to count as long as these APC elements remain in power.”<br />

In a speech he delivered on Independence Day, the erudite scholar blamed the federal government for its poor saving culture.<br />
<br />
He said rather than blame past administrations, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari should working towards correcting the defects.<br />
<br />
Responding to the harsh criticisms directed at past leaders, Akinyemi said: “Those of them who have refused to retire into graceful silence deserve the return brickbats they get.<br />
<br />
“It is thoroughly misleading to isolate and demonise past regimes for the situation where Nigeria has no savings.<br />
<br />
“The fault is in the 1999 constitution (section 162) which makes it mandatory for all monies collected by the federal government with a few exceptions to be deposited into a central account and to be distributed among the federal, state and local governments. No provision was made for savings. This, with considerable charity, can only be called an unforgivable oversight.<br />
<br />
“If we have to lay blame, it should be at the door of those responsible for the 1999 constitution. This does not mean General Abubakar Abdulsalam alone, or the military regime alone, but includes elements of the judiciary and civilians who were all instrumental in midwifing that constitution.”<br />
<br />
He added that the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun and Goodluck Jonathan attempted to save, but were frustrated.<br />
<br />
Akinyemi expressed concern that some of the governors who opposed to the laudable idea were now occupying powerful positions in government.<br />
<br />
“Serious attempts were made by both the Obasanjo and Jonathan administrations to put in place savings through the backdoor such EXCESS CRUDE ACCOUNTS AND COMMONWEALTH SAVINGS FUNDS,” he said.<br />
<br />
“Both were frustrated by the states and the judiciary. The irony in Nigerian history is that some of the state governors who spearheaded the opposition to the attempts to save are now prominent in the cabinet and the senate.<br />
<br />
“What previous administrations failed to do and which the present Buhari Administration should do is to single-mindedly drive a constitutional amendment that would follow the Norwegian model.<br />
<br />
“The Norwegian experience involves setting up a government pension fund global into which 100% of the government’s revenue from royalties and dividends are paid. In any one year, no more than 4% is allowed to be drawn from the account. The Nigerian model, given our peculiar federalism, can include a provision that any withdrawal from the fund must be with a unanimous decision of the members of the national economic council.<br />
<br />
“This is the way forward and goes beyond name calling and the blame game.”

Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says President Muhammadu Buhari is “slow but steady” in his approach to governance “now that he is older and given his experience”.<br />

Tinubu was speaking on Monday during the launch of a book — ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria’, written by John Paden, a professor of international studies — at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.<br />
<br />
“During the campaign, he surprised many by his agility and the broad canvas on which he operated,” he said.<br />
<br />
“In tracing the evolution of Buhari, the national leader, the author’s assertion that military rule is based on the power its holders can wield, while civilian rule is based on the legitimacy derived from elections, is a point with which I dare not debate.<br />
<br />
“Buhari’s career embodies this, hence his transition from being a military ruler to being a civilian leader, who subjected himself to the rigors and uncertainty of elections four times. Thrice he patiently went to court, seeking redress from electoral manipulation.<br />
<br />
“The author, quite accurately, remarked on the Buhari victory equation, as flowing from Northern grassroots support and coalition-building with the South West as well as with other tendencies.”<br />
<br />
Tinubu noted that Paden, in the book, succinctly explained the transition from the Buhari in uniform to one in civilian garb.<br />
<br />
“He notes that in terms of style of leadership, Buhari as a young military head of state was in a hurry,” he said.<br />
<br />
“However, now that he is older and given his experience, he is ‘slow but steady’ in his approach to governance.”

The passport of Ahmed Salkida, the Nigerian journalist declared wanted by the army for allegedly aiding Boko Haram, has not been renewed by the Nigeria Immigration Service.<br />

Salkida is known for having “professional contact” with some Boko Haram commanders who often send him information to counter claims of success made by the army in its counter-terrorism operations.<br />
<br />

When he was declared wanted on August 15, his passport had expired and the Nigerian embassy in the United Arab Emirates, where he was on self-exile, did not renew it but issued him with a travel certificate.<br />
<br />
Till date, the immigration service is yet to issue him his new passport despite his application, suggesting that he might have been blacklisted.<br />
<br />
After his interrogation by the army, during which no felony was established against him, TheCable learnt that he demanded a public apology.<br />
<br />
A security official in the know of the investigation said Salkida wanted a public apology so that he could be cleared to return to UAE, where he left behind his four children and wife.<br />
<br />

Salkida has reportedly told friends and family that he is being strangulated by the Nigerian authorities for being a “credible counter” to the some of the “misleading narrative” on the war in the north-east.<br />

“With no formal letter of apology or some sort of reparation from the government that publicly linked this journalist to terrorism, it will be difficult for Salkida to travel abroad, get a job anywhere,” the security source told TheCable.<br />

When contacted to respond on why the NIS had not renewed Salkida’s passport, Ekpedeme King, spokesman of the service, simply said: “I can’t confirm that, but it is not true.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised an eyebrow over Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s weekend visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose in Ado-Ekiti, saying such a visit to Ekiti State is a slight on APC and contempt for the party’s leadership in the state.<br />

Aregbesola was in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday on invitation of Fayose for the 20th Year Anniversary of Ekiti State.<br />
<br />
At a public forum broadcast live on the state media, Aregbesola described Fayose as “omoluabi” and a hardworking governor who had turned around the fortunes of Ekiti State in terms of infrastructure.<br />
<br />
Social media reports also quoted Aregbesola as saying that “Fayose is a reliable person” and that in spite of political differences, he and Fayose shared many things in common, while also reportedly saying that “sooner than later, there will be realignment of forces”.<br />
<br />
Scuffing at the visit in a statement by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party described Aregbesola’s visit to Fayose as a slight on APC, stressing that it signposted the contempt into which the party and its leaders were held by the Osun governor after Fayose had caused severe pains in the lives of APC members, some of whom had been languishing in jail for about two years for the offences they did not commit.<br />
<br />
He said: “Aregbesola’s visit to Fayose praising him as ‘omoluabi’ and for the achievements by APC-led government is not alone embarrassing but also awful in the face of sustained attacks on APC members, some of whom are still languishing in jail for about two years over trumped-up charges by Fayose.<br />
<br />
“It is shocking that Aregbesola as a governor and one of the leading lights in APC in the South West and indeed the nation would be visiting Ekiti State without putting the leaders into confidence, more so on a visit to a man who once wished the President dead and had done unbelievable things both in Nigeria and abroad to bring Buhari’s government down.<br />
<br />
“Worse still, Aregbesola was praising the man who will stop at nothing to bring APC-led Federal Government down after several years of failed attempts by the progressives to win the presidency of Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
Olatunbosun also frowned at alleged misappropriation of APC’s authority with the Osun governor promising realignments of forces with Fayose “sooner than later”, saying such “unbridled” trading off of APC in Ekiti State to Fayose would never stand in the face of the governor’s molestation of APC members over the years.<br />
<br />
“We find it most embarrassing and shocking that one of our leaders would be planning a re-alignment of forces with a governor that has made life a nightmare for our members, the same members that will participate in the said re-alignment that Aregbesola is talking about, without sparing a thought for members held in jail unjustly while other APC members are routinely attacked by Fayose’s men on the streets.<br />
<br />
“We also find it spiteful that Aregbesola would sit with Fayose on this same programme where the latter berated Buhari to no end, including describing the President’s programmes as a theory that is compounding problems for Nigerians,” he said.<br />
<br />
Warning that the state leaders would resist any attempt to draft the governor into any realignment with APC in the state and foist him on the party, Olatunbosun noted that Fayose had done enough damage to the integrity of Ekiti people, saying that now was the time for the real “omoluabi” in Ekiti to join forces to rebuild the ruins into which Fayose’s administration had left the state.<br />

British Prime Minister Theresa May has unveiled plans to repeal the 1972 act which took her country into the European Union.<br />

“We will introduce, in the next Queen’s speech, a Great Repeal Bill that will remove the European Communities Act from the statute book,” May told The Times. “That was the act that took us into the European Union.<br />
<br />
“This marks the first stage in the UK becoming a sovereign and independent country once again.” The 1972 act is the means by which EU law is implemented in Britain. The new legislation will enshrine Brussels regulations in British law, but Parliament will be able to overturn regulations it no longer wants.<br />
<br />
The move is designed to reassure business and workers whose rights are protected by EU law. May is to officially announce the plans at a conference of her Conservative Party in Birmingham on Sunday, 100 days after Britons voted to leave the bloc in a divisive referendum.<br />
<br />
The bill is expected to be introduced at the formal start of the next parliamentary session in April or May.<br />
<br />
It will only take effect once Britain has left the EU, a two-year process which will begin when London calls on Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and officially notifies the bloc of its intention to leave.

A British man with HIV undergoing a pioneering treatment to cure him of the disease has shown “remarkable” progress, doctors have told a newspaper.<br />

Scientists treating the 44-year-old patient are now hopeful of a breakthrough in what has been described as “one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV”.<br />
<br />
Results showed the man’s most recent blood test showed no detectable HIV was present. The man, who has remained anonymous, is the first of 50 people to complete a trial using the two-stage attack on the deadly virus. The research is being carried out by a collaboration of five of Britain’s top universities organised by the National Health Service.<br />
<br />
Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure, told the Sunday Times: “This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV. We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV. “This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”<br />
<br />
The trial patient told the newspaper that recent blood tests showed no detectable HIV virus was present, although it was too early to confirm that the treatment had worked.<br />
<br />
The new therapy aims to overcome a major barrier to clearing the virus from a sufferer’s body that has challenged researchers for decades. Current methods using antiretroviral therapies (Art) fall short of ridding patients of HIV, as the virus can hide out of the drugs’ reach in the immune system’s T-cells.<br />
<br />
By sheltering in dormant T-cells the virus can later take over its host and use it to produce thousands of copies of itself, should Art no longer work. The research by Oxford and Cambridge universities, Imperial College London, University College London, and King’s College London, is testing a “kick and kill” technique to first expose, then destroy the virus.<br />
<br />
First a vaccine helps the body find infected T-cells. This is then followed by a course of the drug Vorinostat that awakens the dormant T-cells, which then begin producing HIV proteins that act as a homing beacon to the immune system. Imperial College London consultant physician Professor Sarah Fidler said the treatment worked in the laboratory and there was “good evidence” it will work in patients.<br />
<br />
However she added: “We must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy.”

The Lagos State Police Command at the weekend arrested a commercial sex worker, identified as Grace Onome, for allegedly selling her 2-year-old child for N50, 000.<br />

Onome was arrested in the Badagry area of the state alongside four accomplices, who allegedly aided the sale of the girl.<br />

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the arrests to newsmen, said Onome, who worked as a commercial sex worker in the Mobil area of Badagry, allegedly sold Zainab to another sex worker, simply identified as Endurance.<br />
<br />
According to the PPRO, Onome was arrested on Saturday by the Badagry Police Division after a tip-off.<br />
<br />
Badmos said Endurance gave Zainab’s mother N50,000 before taking the girl away, adding that the mother said she used the money to buy a few things for herself.<br />
<br />
“The fleeing buyer, who is of no fixed address, fled with the girl to a yet-to-be-ascertained location to resell her. But the police are on her trail.<br />
<br />
“As at press time, Zainab is yet to be found but the mother has confessed to be a commercial sex worker, and also to the crime.<br />
<br />
“Effort is ongoing to track the fleeing suspected buyer and the child,” the police image maker added.<br />

Why do fashion models always look so miserable?<br />
<br />
“You don’t smile. It is just not done,” said model Ty Ogunkoya as catwalk stars criss-crossed Paris for fashion week.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In his decade as a top model, the 26-year-old Nigerian-born Londoner has never once permitted himself a grin.<br />
<br />
“I have modelled for everyone, and no one has ever asked me to smile,” he told AFP. “To be honest, it would feel weird if I did.”<br />
<br />
“When I walk I think about something sad, like when my cat died,” added Klara, a 18-year-old Slovakian model. “It was run over by a bus.”<br />
<br />
But do models really need to be so glum?<br />
<br />
“Never forget it is the clothes they are looking at and not you,” Victoire Macon Dauxerre, a former model for Celine and Alexander McQueen, said she was told.<br />
<br />
In her book, “Never Thin Enough”, she tells how she was warned to “never, ever smile”.<br />
<br />
‘It’s so not done’<br />
<br />
Her modelling agency’s catwalk coach taught her how to get the perfect “haughty killer look” by slightly dropping her chin and lifting her eyes at the same time.<br />
<br />
Rising young star Matthieu Villot told AFP the reason for the unspoken ban on smiling was clear.<br />
<br />
“They want to show the clothes and not our faces. If we smile we focus attention on our faces and not the clothes,” said the 22-year-old medical student.<br />
<br />
Ogunkoya said he had been never told not to smile but “my whole preconception of modelling was moody guys and girls going down the runway… It is so not done they don’t have to say.”<br />
<br />
Fashion historian Lydia Kamitsis said it was not always so.<br />
<br />
The vogue for expressionless models is actually very recent, she said, dating from the rise of the Japanese designers Yohji Yamamoto and Commes des Garcon in the early 1980s.<br />
<br />
“This was also the period of the supermodels (Cindy Crawford, Imam and Elle Macpherson) who very much had their own personalties, and it was a reaction against this,” she said.<br />
<br />
“In the 1960s, when collections were first presented as shows, models often smiled, laughed and even danced to music.<br />
<br />
Walking clothes hangers<br />
<br />
“Now they are seen as walking clothes hangers. It’s all about effacing their personality… the clothes are it.”<br />
<br />
Anthropologist Leyla Neri, the director of fashion at the New School Parsons Paris, agreed.<br />
<br />
She dates the first appearance of moody, often scowling models to Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin in the 1960s.<br />
<br />
It then sped up with the rise feminism and “women’s need to be taken seriously in their professional lives, so you see women striking strong, unsmiling poses in Armani suits.<br />
<br />
“Men have never smiled on the catwalk because they never have had to smile to please,” Neri insisted.<br />
<br />
“In the 1950s models smiled all the time, in fact they were kind of living dolls,” she added.<br />
<br />
“With emancipation and designers like Yves Saint Laurent you get more a androgynous look, and women became more masculine and powerful.”<br />
<br />
Contemporary designers have an “even more minimalist vision”, Neri argued. “They want the most neutral faces and bodies possible to show their work.<br />
<br />
“They do not see their models as an ideal of beauty any longer. That is something that the public has not quite understood.”<br />
<br />
Every few years, however, iconoclasts like French designer Jean Paul Gaultier send models out smiling.<br />
<br />
Indian creator Manish Arora also cheers things up by casting his bohemian friends.<br />
<br />
And several models ended up beaming through British designer Paul Smith’s last Paris menswear show.<br />
<br />
“I didn’t tell them to smile,” he told AFP afterwards. “I have nothing against smiling. If the clothes make them happy, go for it,” he said.<br />
<br />
Villot, who took part in that show but didn’t dare a smile, said models are often afraid to look too happy in case they end up looking ridiculous.<br />
<br />
“The serious face you can do every time, but if you smile you don’t know how you are going to look.”<br />
<br />
Ogunkoya agreed. “It’s easier to just walk and zone out. Smiling is definitely more of a challenge.”<br />
<br />
But would he smile if asked? “Why not? You get asked to do the most random things in this job.”

A diplomatic row may be brewing between Nigeria and Turkey following the arrest  and deportation of some Nigerian students from Istanbul by the Turkish police.<br />

Rukkaya Usman, one of the Nigerian students deported from the country, said the Turkish government did not give a reason for the action.<br />
<br />
Usman, a final year student of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Melikseh, told TheCable on Saturday that she arrived in Turkey at 8am on September 26, but that she was detained at the airport for about 10 hours after which she was placed on  a plane and flown back to Nigeria.<br />
<br />
<br />
“As I got to the airport, at the immigration; they (immigration officers) collected my passport and resident permit. They started to ask me questions like: ‘what are you studying?’ ‘What’s your father’s name?’ They took my passport. This was on September 26. I asked what was happening. But they said they didn’t know, that it was a new law, that they were sending me back to my country,” Usman narrated.<br />
<br />
But the Federal Government said it would summon the Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, and demand an explanation for the deportation of the students.<br />
<br />
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sola Enikanolaiye, informed our correspondent over the telephone on Sunday, that the government would summon  Cakil after verifying reports of the deportation of the students.<br />
<br />
He said, “I am hearing the news of the deportation for the first time from you, but I will follow up to get the facts and we are summoning him (Turkish ambassador) again  to demand an explanation (for the deportation.)”<br />
<br />
The Federal Government had on Friday summoned the envoy over report that some Nigerian students were being detained by the police at the Istanbul Airport.<br />
<br />
The government had insisted on the release of the detained students and directed the ambassador to ensure the safety and well-being of the students whose school, Fathi University, was among the 2,099 schools shut down by the Turkish government for links with Fethullah Gulen, the alleged mastermind of the failed July 15, 2016 coup in the country.<br />
<br />
Enikanolaiye stated that the Nigerian mission official in Ankara, had been directed to meet the Turkish government over the issue, stressing that the students must be released immediately.<br />
<br />
He explained that the MFA, during the meeting with the Turkish envoy last Friday, rejected some visa conditions the Turkish government imposed on the detained students.<br />
<br />
The Permanent Secretary said, “We summoned the Turkish ambassador to the ministry on Friday and demanded the immediate release of the students. We also rejected the condition imposed on the students that they should return to Nigeria and obtain a fresh visa in line with their admission to a new university. We insisted that they must be issued the new visa in Turkey there.”<br />
<br />
Enikanolaiye, however, noted that the detained students were not up to 50 as earlier reported, adding that a senior Nigerian mission official in Ankara, had been directed to follow up with the Turkish government on Nigeria’s demands.<br />
<br />
 The students were said to have been held and their passports seized by the police upon arrival at the Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul.<br />
<br />
The detention of the Nigerians, who were mainly students of Fathi University, one of the private universities in Turkey, was believed to be in connection with the failed coup in the country in July, 2016.<br />
<br />
The Fathi University is among the 2,099 schools, dormitories and universities shut down in the wake of the failed coup in Turkey on account of their alleged links to the accused mastermind of the putsch, Fethullah Gulen.<br />
<br />
 Cakil had in the aftermath of the coup, requested the Federal Government  to close down 17 Turkish schools in Nigeria for alleged links to Gulen, but the latter ignored his request.

The Nigerian Labour Congress  (NLC) yesterday reiterated its position against the sale of national assets, warning the federal government that ‘Nigeria is not for sale.’<br />

While stating the position of organised labour on the independence anniversary, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba argued that government should rather focus on strengthening the economy and  ensuring a sustainable society than making attempt to place Nigeria on sale.<br />
<br />
He said: “I salute the extraordinary resilience and patriotism of the average Nigerian. When all seems down and out, we always find ways of overcoming our adversaries.<br />
<br />
“As we mark this year’s anniversary in the midst of a recessionary economy, and amid massive suffering and unprecedented challenges in the polity, we must keep faith that we will overcome our difficulties and challenges, and ultimately triumph over our current socio-economic and political challenges.<br />
<br />
“On behalf of organised labour, I want to use this occasion of our national Independence Day to call on the political leadership of our country -from national to states and local government levels, that they need to do more to show selfless commitment to building a strong and sustainable country in which our current and future generations will be proud of.”<br />
<br />
Wabba stated that “as the largest est black nation on earth, we collectively owe it as a duty to the black race, both on the continent and in the Diaspora to build a united and prosperous nation.<br />
<br />
“For these aspirations to be achieved, government at all levels must strive to build strong and viable public institutions.<br />
<br />
“The history of human development in all the continents of the world have shown that the developmental state had led the quest for the development of nations.<br />
<br />
The NLC have maintained over the last three decades since the early 80’s that Nigeria is not for sale.”<br />
<br />
He stressed that NLC “will continue to work with all genuine patriots to resist the policy that seeks to sell our commonwealth, our common patrimony to the politically connected and their patrons and sidekicks.”<br />
<br />
On the unity of Nigeria, NLC president maintained that “as workers, our faith in the Nigeria nation is unshaken. Our members in every part of the nation from the creeks in the South-south, to the plain lands of the northern most part of the country, from the South-east to the South-west, we are committed to a united Nigeria; all those seeking to dismember our country for self-serving reasons will fail.<br />
<br />
“Accordingly, I urge Nigerians to take a positive view of our country instead of indulging in self-recrimination and bitterness that hurt majority of us Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“The time to rebuild our nation is now, for as they say, strength comes from rubble. We must never yield to despondency.<br />
<br />
At 56, let us rededicate ourselves  to working together to overcome our nation’s challenges.”<br />

Also, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Cross River State has joined other groups and individual in Nigeria to oppose the proposed sale of national assets by the federal government as one of the measures at pulling Nigeria’s economy out of recession.<br />
<br />
The PFN warned that the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) must not be sold by the federal government.<br />
<br />
Opposing to the proposal, the Chairman of the PFN in the state, Pastor Lawrence Ekwok, pointed out that the sale of any of the countries’ public property would amount to daylight robbery.<br />
<br />
Ekwok stated this in Calabar yesterday at a solemn assembly staged by the PFN in the state to pray for Nigeria as the country marks her 56th Independence anniversary.<br />
<br />
Addressing members of the PFN at the event, Ekwok noted that from available facts, the sale of public property has never been of benefit to the Nigerian people.<br />
<br />
“I would like to enjoin us to recall the past and ask questions about what happened to Nigeria’s national assets that were sold under the guise of commercialisation and privatisation in the past.<br />
<br />
“Apart from the fact that the assets were grossly undervalued, due process was not followed in most of the sales as “powerful” government officials and business men were the ones who “bought” most of the assets and most of the funds that were supposed to accrue to government coffers never came in.”<br />
<br />
Continuing, the PFN chairman said: “The Ajoakuta steel company, for instance, was built then at the cost of $3.3 billion, but was sold at a paltry sum of $250 million to a Russian company known as Rusal. As if that was not enough day-light robbery of Nigerians, only $130 million of the $250 million was paid. Nothing has been heared about the balance till date. Delta Steel company was valued by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE)  at N225 billion but was sold at N4.5 million only.<br />

“Let me not bore you with stories of other national assets that were sold including Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON), Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN), Alluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON), Nigeria Re-insurance, NICON Insurance, etc.”

Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari indeed inherited ‘rot’ from the past administration and is working himself to the bones in order to put things in order.<br />

He implored Nigerians to be patient with the President as the desired change cannot be achieved in one day.<br />

Recall that Buhari had recently said memories of the past administration led by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will never be overlooked, stressing that he will continue to keep the “mistakes” in view, to guard against repeating them, as according to him, the sufferings presently experienced in the country are the outcome of those mistakes.<br />

Speaking with the newsmen, the convener of the Save Nigeria Group backed the President, saying, “The human memory is fickle and we forget things easily. In the past administration, in Borno State, how many local governments were seized by Boko Haram? They were many. But today, not a single one is being controlled by the sect.<br />

“President Buhari inherited rot from the past administration and we forget so quickly because our expectations are so high. The Change mantra was so real to us that we thought those who were tenants would become landlords overnight and those who were riding ‘okada’ would just own Mercedes Benz cars.<br />
<br />
“Things don’t happen that way. If it took God seven days to fix the chaos in the earth, please give us a break because a day with God is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. Is this government working or they are just sleeping?<br />
<br />
“I love what former President Olusegun Obasanjo said recently. He told us how he inherited a low foreign reserve and then went ahead to get the best and the brightest people to build it. That’s what is needed here.<br />
<br />
“A good leader must have wisdom and courage to take those actions that need to be taken. What I’ll implore President Buhari to do is to let Nigerians know concerning the things that will start happening in October. He should let them know that, ‘See, this is where we are and this is where I want to go and to go between here and there, there’s a gulf and we need to blow the bridge. These are the materials we’re using to build the bridge.<br />

“These are the men I want to use and I’m giving them so-so timeline to deliver. This will encourage the people to know their president is talking to them and we pray that the communication should continue, but as far as working is concerned, the man is working himself to bones. I also think the APC should put its house in order and stop fighting because when a chicken starts to eat its intestine, the end is near,” Bakare added.<br />

Speaking further on the President’s focus on fighting corruption and how it is believed to be affecting other areas of governance like the economy, he stated, “In fact, I don’t think President Buhari is the one fighting corruption. I only said it’s his vision. He’s not the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, he’s not the Attorney General of the Federation, he’s not the Inspector-General of Police.<br />
<br />
“What needs to happen is to have a formidable team with clearly stated responsibilities. The President is one man and can’t do all the things I’ve enumerated on his own. When you have a team that is working together, things will improve because you cannot say this is what I will do and leave the other areas to suffer. It’s not going to augur well for the country. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere.<br />
<br />
“However, in the month of October, I’m sure we will begin to smile. We may not laugh but I’m sure we will begin to see certain changes in certain directions,” the cleric said.<br />

Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan on Monday won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on autophagy — a process whereby cells “eat themselves” — which when disrupted can cause Parkinson’s and diabetes.<br />

Autophagy is a fundamental process in cell physiology with major implications for human health and disease.<br />
<br />
The process is essential for the orderly degradation and recycling of damaged cell parts and its failure is believed to be responsible for ageing and cell damage.<br />
<br />
Researchers first observed during the 1960s that the cell could destroy its own contents by wrapping them up in membranes and transporting them to a recycling compartment called the lysosome.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“Difficulties in studying the phenomenon meant that little was known until, in a series of brilliant experiments in the early 1990s, Yoshinori Ohsumi used baker’s yeast to identify genes essential for autophagy.”<br />
<br />
He then went on to explain the underlying mechanisms for autophagy in yeast and showed that similar sophisticated machinery is used in human cells.<br />
<br />
Ohsumi’s discoveries “have led to a new paradigm in the understanding of how the cell recycles its contents,” the jury said.<br />
<br />
“Mutations in autophagy genes can cause disease, and the autophagic process is involved in several conditions including cancer and neurological disease,” it added.<br />
<br />
Ohsumi, 71, received a PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1974. He is currently a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.<br />
<br />
The prize comes with eight million Swedish kronor (around $936,000 or 834,000 euros).<br />
<br />
Last year, Irish-born William Campbell of the US, Satoshi Omura of Japan and China’s Tu Youyou won the prestigious award for their discoveries of treatments against parasites.

<div>According to Daily Trust, the  government has over the years built dozens of these toilets termed “VIP toilets” in the unity schools.</div>

<div>It had spent a total of N3.1 billion to build VIP toilets and bathrooms in 64 unity schools in 2014 and 2015, according to investigation.</div>

<div>Funds are also provided in this year’s budget for such facilities. There are 104 Unity Colleges in the country.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The Federal Ministry of Education defended the cost saying the toilets were introduced to improve bathroom and toilet hygiene practices in schools.</div>

<div>An analysis of the expenditures of the schools as contained in the budgets showed that N1.45 billion was spent on VIP toilets and bathrooms in 2014 and another N1.64 billion in 2015.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>The review of the budgets obtained from the budget office of the federation showed that 29 Unity Colleges spent N1.45 billion in 2014 with each getting N50million.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>In 2015, 41 of the colleges got N40million each, making a total of N1.64 billion for the year.</div>
<div><br /></div>
<div>In two years, all the Unity colleges in the country spent N12.4 billion on renovations, rehabilitations and other capital projects.</div>

Zambia has announced the names of 23 players, that have been selected by coach Wedson Nyirenda, for this Sunday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.<br />

Kennedy Mweene, Nathan Sinkala and Jackson Mwanza made the cut, while FC Ural’s Chisamba Lungu and Lille’s Stoppila Sunzu are the only two European-based pros.<br />
<br />
Nyirenda has however left out Racha Kola, Donashano Malama, Billy Mutale, Spencer Sautu, Patson Daka and Justin Shonga from the 23-man squad.<br />
<br />
They were all dropped from the provisional 33-man squad .<br />
<br />
Zambia, who failed to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, will be hoping to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign with a win against the Super Eagles in Ndola.<br />

A Presidential Aide, Lauretta Onochie on Sunday said that Nigeria was safer and better under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari than it was under former President Jonathan.<br />

Onochie, a Personal Assistant on Social Media to President Buhari, stated this in an article in response to the comment by People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Director of New Media, Mr Deji Adeyanju.<br />

It would be recalled that Adeyanju had said that the 2016 Independence Anniversary was the worst since 1960, adding that the current administration was breaking rules of law and infringing on rights.<br />
<br />
The PDP in Niger had also in its statement to mark the Independence Anniversary said Nigerians are poorer.<br />
<br />
However, Ms Onochie stressed that all the problems of the current administration were caused by the previous administrations, especially that of President Jonathan which Adeyanju was a part of.<br />
<br />
“The whole world is aware that Nigeria is a much secure and safe nation under President Buhari.<br />
<br />
“The American Secretary of State, John Kerry has been dashing around Nigeria in safety, Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, was seen on the streets of Nigeria, jogging with ordinary Nigerians in safety.<br />
<br />
“Nigerians, even those in the North East are moving about.<br />
<br />
“The truth is that, unlike the insensitive PDP bunch, President Buhari and his team is sensitive to Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“They are aware of the present sufferings and hardships Nigerians are going through. They are not just sympathetic to the plight of Nigerians, but they are working round the clock to bring succour to them.<br />
<br />
“They are prudent in the management of our scarce resources. They will not spend our hard earned resources on “pomp and pageantry” celebration while Nigerians suffer.<br />
<br />
“He has assured that the present recession is temporary. We believe him,” she said.<br />
<br />
She said that she would have ignored the ‘ranting’ of Adeyanju, but needed to point out that Nigerian were better and happier before the administration of former President Jonathan which Adeyanju was part of.<br />
<br />
Onochie said that even the celebrations that characterised independence anniversary in the last administration were only for a few and not for the ordinary Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“Pomp and pageantry were what Deji was really after.<br />
<br />
“That is what he was used to. It would start with Deji and his co travellers in the ruination train of Nigeria being invited to the Presidential Villa.<br />
<br />
“At the villa, choice wines, spirits and champagnes, worth hundreds of millions of Naira would be gulped down, spilled and even vomited.<br />
<br />
“Food, mostly imported from America, South Africa and United Kingdom, would be consumed at tax payers’ expense.<br />
<br />
“No ordinary Nigerian was invited to be part of this pomp and pageantry.<br />
<br />
“Independence Anniversary party packs can range from an invitation to the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, to cart away "Ghana must go" bagful of Naira or Dollars.<br />
<br />
“Ordinary citizens stayed home in deep reflection of how to get rid of Deji Adeyanju and his big brothers and sisters!<br />
<br />
“How then can the one whose cohorts recolonised us talk about liberty?<br />
<br />
“Nigerians were not part of this pomp and pageantry. Nigerians wallowed in poverty, insecurity and suffered the consequences of the corrupt activities of Deji Adeyanju’s friends.<br />
<br />
“How can the inability of not being able to feed our families, pay our children’s fees, afford basic health care needs, driven from ones ancestral homes, families separated from one another be termed “Liberty”? she queried.<br />
<br />
She alleged that Adeyanju only cared about the current situation because he was no longer benefitting as he had been used to.<br />
<br />
Onochie, therefore expressed optimism that the current economic situation would soon be over as the current administration was working hard to steer the nation away from recession.<br />
