Some off-campus students of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin at Eleko village on Friday protested alleged extortion by security agents.
They blocked the road at Eleko village, along Kwara Polytechnic at about 17.45hours to protest alleged harassment and extortion by security agents in the area.
The angry students complained bitterly that security agents constantly raided the area under the guise of searching for ‘yahoo-yahoo’ boys.
They claimed that in the process, the security agents harass and extort innocent students and residents of the area.

It was gathered that the Friday’s raid, however, turned violent as students and residents of the area resisted the security agents and blocked the road.
In the violence that broke out, the security agents fired tear-gas leading to some sustaining injuries.
A student yet to be identified was allegedly seriously wounded from gun shot and hospitalized.
The timely intervention of operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, attached to Kwara Polytechnic, calmed the situation as no life was lost in the ugly incident.
Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesman of the state police command, Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, proved abortive.

Jada Pollock, manager to Grammy award-winning Afrobeats singer, WizKid, has been named Executive of the Week by Billboard.
The announcement was made via Billboard Hip-hop’s Twitter page on Friday, to recognise Pollock’s efforts with WizKid’s hit song Essence.
“With the chart-topping success of Wizkid’s ‘Essence’, his manager Jada Pollock earns the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.” the tweet read.
Presently holding the number one spot on the Billboard Hot R&B songs chart, Essence, which features Tems, has been the most commercially successful song on WizKid’s fourth studio album, ‘Made in Lagos’. Earlier in the month, Essence was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America after selling 500,000 units in the US.

Speaking on the success of the album, Pollock stated that, “The album is truly a reflection of Wiz’s growth as both an artist and an individual.”
“Made in Lagos is purely good music. It’s real and people are genuinely gravitating towards it, irrespective of space and time. There’s something in the album for everyone and every mood,” she added.
When asked about decisions made to enable Essence top the charts, she said that the “anticipation has grown organically with time; I wouldn’t say there were any specific plays or decisions that were made to achieve that.”
She, however, disclosed that “Wiz always wanted to do a video for the record before it started to grow. We pushed to make it happen and watched the record performance drive further on the Hot 100 chart each week, and today we have a No. 1 song on urban radio in the U.S.”
Pollock further praised the producers of the song, LegenduryBeatz and P2J, for helping the song achieve its “feel good” vibe.
“This song in particular has a sound that makes you feel so good whenever you hear it. LegenduryBeatz and P2J, the producers of the record, did a great job blending the drums from Afroswing with the ’90s R&B melodies,” she said.

Police in Kano State have arrested a man and his wife over alleged kidnapping of a newborn baby at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to newsmen.
He said the new born baby was kidnapped on Wednesday after a woman delivered twins at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano where she was admitted.
Kiyawa explained that the incident happened when a woman’s sister, who was looking after the babies at the corridor of the Maternity ward, slept off.

He said a team of policemen immediately stormed the scene and launched a search where the Hospital.
He added that the hospital was sealed off and thoroughly combed, but the child could not be found.
“Sustained efforts, coupled with intelligence sharing led to the arrest of one Maryam Sadiq and her husband Abubakar Sadiq all of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano,” he said.
Kiyawa said the child was recovered from them in their home and had been reunited with the family.
The case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Command for discreet investigation and would be charged to court after the investigation.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control says three people died as a result of COVID-19 complications, while 466 news cases was recorded on Friday.
The NCDC confirmed this in an update on its Facebook page on Saturday morning.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the new 466 COVID-19 infections on Friday indicates a decrease from 727 cases reported on Thursday.
The Public health agency reports that COVID-19 cases in the country now stands at 198,239 on Friday.

It noted that 2,588 people have died from the disease’s complications and that infections were confirmed in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday.
The report said, “Lagos (134), Rivers (82), Edo (69), Gombe (39), FCT (32), Kaduna (21), Plateau (20), Benue (19), Kwara (17), Delta (16), Akwa Ibom (10), Bayelsa (5) and Kano (2).
“Today’s report includes two deaths and eight discharged cases for Lagos are for September 9, 2021 cases from Nasarawa and Sokoto States.”
According to the NCDC, there were 9,871 active coronavirus cases in Nigeria as of September 10, with a total of 182,780 cases successfully treated and discharged after recovery.
The NCDC said that over 2. 8 million samples of the virus out of the nation’s roughly 200 million population were tested.
Meanwhile, The National Primary Health Care Development Agency said that Nigeria had fully inoculated 3,901,235 of total eligible persons targeted for COVID-19 vaccination in the country.
NPHCDA said this via its vaccination database on Saturday morning.
It said that the update was as at Sept. 10 from 36 States and the FCT.
The immunization agency said it had also disclosed that 1,658,276 total eligible persons have also received their first doses.

In a bid to stem the tide of cultism in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, operatives of the State security outfit known as Amotekun Corps have begun to hunt for killer cultists in the town.
The operation, which also had the State Police involved, was prompted by the recent cult-related killings in the community.
It was gathered that a youth in the community was during the week killed at Iloro quarters of the town which sparked protest among the youths.
The deceased was said to have been shot at a bar after he was mistaken for a target by another rival cult gang.

Following the development, Amotekun operatives and policemen were quickly mobilised to avert a possible breakdown of law and order in town.
According to the Commander of the Amotekun Corps in the State, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the hunt for the killers had commenced in full force to curb activities of cultists.
“We have met with the Kabiyesi and his traditional Chiefs to ensure we get to the root of this problem,” he said.
Also, the Ondo Police Commissioner, Bolaji Salami, who confirmed the killing, assured that the perpetrators would soon be brought to book.

FIFA has given permission to players who were called up by Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay during the last international break, to play in the Premier League this weekend.
On Wednesday, the world football governing body had invoked Article 5 to block English clubs from selecting players who did not honour their countries’ invitation.
This followed a request from the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Premier League clubs unanimously agreed not to release players for matches in countries on the UK Government’s red list.

However, following extensive talks with FIFA, the FA and the Premier League, the associations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay agreed to waive the automatic five-day restriction they had the option of imposing.
The resolution was reached late on Friday night according to Sky Sports, a little more than 12 hours before the weekend’s fixtures kick off.
This means Liverpool will have Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino available for selection against Leeds on Sunday.
Ederson and Gabriel Jesus will also be able to play for Manchester City against Leicester on Saturday.
Chelsea will have Thiago Silva available, Manchester United can select Fred and Leeds can include Raphina.

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has mocked Nigerian leaders who send their children abroad to study.
Shehu Sani in a post on Saturday via his Facebook page, made the mockery while reacting to the Dr. Christ Ngige’s daughter who graduated from the University of Lagos.
“Dr. Chris Ngige is proud to showcase his daughter graduating from UNILAG; other leaders in office will show theirs abroad and preach patriotism to you”, he posted.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, called out to striking medical doctors to call off the industrial action as Nigerians are in critical need of their services.
Buhari, who made the call when he received members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, also urged those contemplating strike to choose amicable settlement of all grievances instead.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari noted that doctors’ striking at a time when the country is struggling to find its way out of a pandemic is not a good decision, the nature of grievances notwithstanding.
He urged the striking unions to opt for settlement of issues by negotiation, no matter how long it takes, assuring that all outstanding benefits owed medical doctors will be cleared, after verifications, even as he reminded them that his administration has a track record of paying its debt to workers and pensioners.
“The lives of citizens that could be lost or damaged when doctors withdraw services, are precious enough to be worth opting for peaceful resolution of differences.
“Protecting our citizens is not to be left to government alone, but taken as a collective responsibility, in which especially medical professionals play a critical role. Let me speak directly to the striking doctors. Embarking on industrial action at this time when Nigerians need you most is not the best action to take, no matter the grievances.
“This administration has a good track record of paying all debts owed to government workers, pensioners and contractors and we have even revisited debts left by past administrations, once due verification is done. Debts genuinely owed Health workers will be settled.
“I learnt that some of the 12 points demand in the ongoing strike were already addressed. Though the Review of a new Hazard Allowance has not been fully negotiated because of the sharp and deep division within the ranks of the striking doctors.’’
President Buhari said the outstanding issue of an Establishment circular issued by the Head of Service, removing House Officers, NYSC Doctors from scheme of service had an addendum circular from National Salaries and Wages Commission to clarify that they will continue to earn the wages attached to them on their present wage structure.
“I request that the agreement reached in the meetings of 20th and 21st August captured in the MOU, which I have seen, be religiously implemented,’’ he added.

The Lagos State Judicial Panel probing the October 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shootings has heard that the cartridge casings retrieved from the area of the incident are of the same calibre as the live ammunition of the Nigerian Army.

A forensic expert from Sentinel Forensics Ltd, Joseph Kayode, stated this as part of his ballistic report of the forensic investigation of the incident.
The army on November 14, 2020, through then Commander of 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Ibrahim Taiwo, denied that soldiers shot #EndSARS protesters with live bullets.
Its claims were backed by the Federal Government.
Taiwo presented samples of blank and live ammunition to the panel, insisting that the soldiers fired only blanks in the air to disperse protesters.
About six bullet shells were said to have been recovered from the scene of the incident.
The exhibits recovered by the panel and those presented by the Nigerian Army were presented to the forensic team for ballistic investigation.
“The live ammunition presented by the Nigerian Army is of the same calibre as the cartridge casing submitted by the judicial panel,” Kayode said.
He also noted that the blanks submitted by the panel did not match the records from the Army’s inventory.
“While the blank ammunition submitted by the Nigerian Army is not of the same calibre as the cartridge casings submitted by the Judicial Panel.
“The blank ammunition submitted by the Nigerian Army is not designed to be fired by rifles chambered to 7.62 x 39mm.”
The panel’s chairperson Justice Doris Okuwobi (Retd) adjourned till Saturday.

Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, says his younger brother, Olajide, will not die in vain.
He stated this in a Facebook post on Thursday night hours after the burial of Olajide in the Kiribo area of Ondo State.

“My brother Olajide Sowore will never die in vain, thank you Nigeria! Though I am shackled, I am not in chains, I refuse to be held down! #RevolutionNow,” the elder Sowore wrote.
It can be recalled that the remains of Olajide were laid to rest in the presence of his wife, four kids, family members, friends and associates.
The elder Sowore, in a Facebook post, also shared photos of the burial with the caption, “My kid brother Olajide Sowore who was brutally murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen reportedly referred to as herdsmen/kidnappers on Ore-Benin Road was finally laid to rest today at Kiribo!”
The Sahara Reporters publisher had in a tribute described his brother as “an out-of-the-box thinker” who decided to go back to school when he was about clocking 50.
The deceased was a Pharmacy student at the Igbinedion University in the Okada area of Edo State. He was returning from school when he was shot dead by suspected herdsmen around 6am on Saturday along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Kontongs Bello, had told newsmen the late Sowore was killed when gunmen kidnapped about five persons.
A woman, Emmanuella Anyanwu, who escaped from the hoodlums who killed late the Olajide had also said the gunmen demanded a ransom of N10m shortly before she escaped from the camp where she was kept with four others.
Anyanwu had also identified them as herdsmen, saying, “I believe they are Fulani because on that Saturday afternoon, they released their cows and came to where we were being held.
“I saw a mast far away and I started trekking towards it. After one hour or more, I got to a road and saw an elderly man on a motorcycle. I asked him to take me to a police station, which he did.”
Many eminent Nigerians including Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN; Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; and his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, amongst others, had condemned the killing of Olajide but many Nigerians want security agencies to quickly bring the perpetrators to book and end the menacing trend of criminality that has turned some Nigerian highways to killing fields.

Salihu Tanko Yakasai, former aide to Kano Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has supported Governor Nyesom Wike on payment of tax to the state government.
Recall that the Rivers State Government, through the State Attorney General, had challenged the collection of VAT by the Federal Government agency in court.
Wike had directed the Rivers State’s Internal Revenue Service to immediately commence the implementation of the state’s value-added law 2021.
He directed all corporate bodies to pay their taxes to the state government or risk being sanctioned including “the sealing off of their businesses”.

“Let me warn that the Rivers State Government is fully in charge of the state and will not tolerate any further attempt by the FIRS to sabotage or undermine our authority to freely administer our tax and other related laws in our own State. Those who play with fire risk having their fingers burnt. Enough of the shenanigans,” Wike warned.
Governor Wike said the law will be in place until the judgment is set aside by a superior court.
Dawisu, on his Twitter page, said any northerner opposing VAT to the state government does not mean well for his people.
According to him, it is time for northern leaders to wake up and seek how to revive the region’s economic status in the country.
“Any northerner that’s attacking Wike on this VAT issue does not mean well for his region. On this I’m with Wike 100%.
“Its time we look inwards and do some soul searching on how to revive our economic status in this country.
“To me, this is a wake up call to Arewa leaders and followers,” Dawisu said.

It is a new era at the U.S. Open as two teenagers, British Emma Raducanu and Canadian Leylah Fernandez battled their ways into the final, conquering some old guards.
Fernandez stunned No.2 seed Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka to win the battle of three sets.
Raducanu dismissed Greek player Maria Sakkari 6-1 6-4. to set the record as the first qualifier to reach the final at the tournament.
And the 18 year-old did so without dropping a set in all her matches.

With British tennis royalty Tim Henman and Virginia Wade looking on, Raducanu fended off seven break points across her first two service games and capitalized on a trio of double faults from Sakkari on the way to a 5-0 lead in the first set.
Down a break in the second set, Sakkari then fought off five break points in a near 10-minute seventh game but the 18-year-old Raducanu would not be denied the victory and went on to seal the match and set up a final against 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
“Honestly I just can’t believe it. A shock. Crazy,” she said. “To be in a Grand Slam final at this stage of my career, yeah, I have no words.”
Left-handed Fernandez faced a much harder task to overcome No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets 7-6(7-3) 4-6 6-4.
The 19 year-old Fernandez said she had put doubters to shame by reaching the finals.
She was dropped from Tennis Quebec’s development program when she was seven-years-old and told by teachers to forget becoming a professional and focus on school.
“A lot of people doubted me, my family and my dreams,” said Fernandez.
“They kept saying ‘No’, that I’m not going to be a professional tennis player, that I should stop and just pursue going to school.
“I remember one teacher, which was actually very funny — at the time it wasn’t, but now I’m laughing.
“She told me to stop playing tennis, you will never make it, and just focus on school.”
Fernandez says she carries that rejection with her into every match and uses it as motivation, along with the other challenges her family faced along the road to helping her realise her dream.
Her father Jorge, an Ecuador-born soccer player who knew little about tennis, stepped in and became her coach, instilling in her an unshakable self-belief.
Ranked No.73 at the beginning of the tournament, the Canadian played with the belief she could beat anyone.
She shocked four-time Grand Slam winner and defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round.
She went on to dismiss three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber in the fourth and fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
One of the game’s big servers Sabalenka threw everything she had at Fernandez, including 10 aces, but had no better luck against the youngster, who played with veteran poise throughout the three-set thriller.
“Impossible is nothing,” said Fernandez. “Like my dad would tell me all the time, there’s no limit to my potential, to what I can do.
“Every day we just got to keep working hard, we got to keep going for it.
“There’s no limit to what I can do.”

President of the United States, Joe Biden, and Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping talked for the first time in seven months Thursday, with both leaders urging a path away from conflict but holding ground on fierce competition between the superpowers.
In the 90-minute call, Biden warned against misunderstandings that could lead to confrontation between Washington and Beijing while Xi called for a new direction in a relationship beset by “serious difficulties”, the White House said.
US-China relations went into a nosedive under Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump, who launched a trade war between the world’s number one and two economies and harangued the Chinese government for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Biden’s administration, while urging multilateralism and an end to Trump’s “America first” ideology, has kept trade tariffs in place and remains tough on other contentious areas of the relationship with Beijing, such as cybersecurity and human rights.

During the call, Biden’s message was that the United States wants to ensure “we don’t have any situation in the future where we veer into unintended conflict,” a senior US administration official told reporters.
In Beijing, state broadcaster CCTV reported that the phone call was “candid, in-depth” with Xi noting the “serious difficulties” caused by recent US policy towards China, which has seen the countries joust over trade, tech, human rights and the origins of the coronavirus.
“Whether China and the US can properly handle their relations… is critical for the future and destiny of the world,” state broadcaster CCTV said citing Xi.
The White House signaled the diplomatic impasse is unsustainable and potentially dangerous, requiring intervention by the leaders in Thursday’s call.

Students in the South-East may miss West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Monday’s sitting due to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) order.
The organization ordered the people in the region to stay away from schools, markets, banks and other public places every Monday.
The directive was issued as part of the pressure against the federal government over Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu.
Those who default are sometimes attacked. There have been cases of destruction of vehicles, shops and other property.

The Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders, (COSEYL) said the actions by IPOB are detrimental to the well-being of innocent civilians.
A statement by the President, Goodluck Ibem, and Secretary, Kanice Igwe, lamented the negative impacts of the weekly lockdown on social and economic activities.
It said WAEC candidates were at risk of disruptions to their papers, a situation that would cause incomplete results.
“Our secondary school students sitting for WAEC examinations will be writing English Language on September 13 and we cannot afford to have them miss the paper.
”Asking these students to sit-at-home on Monday when others will be writing the same examination is the worst disservice anyone can do to our students”, COSEYL noted.
The body regretted that many who depend on daily income are at the receiving end of the IPOB order and called for its total cancelation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the highest Igbo socio-cultural organization led by Chief Chidi Ibe, has denied the endorsement of the former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu for the 2023 presidential seat in Nigeria.
The group insisted that it is concerned with ensuring that an Igbo man takes over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 in the interest of equity justice and fairness.
Ohanaeze, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chika Temple, and sent to newsmen on Thursday, faulted the media statement by a chieftain, Uche Okwukwu describing Bola Tinubu as a protector of Ndigbo.
It was reported that Ohanaeze’s Deputy President General, Dim Uche Okwukwu had described Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the protector of people of the Southeast, who is needed to guide Nigerians in the right path of democracy.

Okwukwu recalled that Tinubu was a fair leader who appointed Igbos into his cabinet during his administration as Governor of Lagos State.
He stated that Tinubu was needed for the unification of the Southern bloc.
However, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in the release, maintained that it has not endorsed Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election, stating that it amounts to injustice should anybody from any section of Nigeria denies Igbos the opportunity to occupy the nation’s number one seat in 2023.
The group noted the contributions of the former Lagos governor in deepening democracy in the nation but insisted that Tinubu did nothing much to advance the welfares of the igbos residing in Lagos during his reign as the Chief Executive officer of the state.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also noted with nostalgia the appointment of Chief Ben Akubueze as Commissioner in the then administration of the APC national leader as Governor, insisting that the development should not be used as a yardstick in describing Bola Tinubu as protector of the Igbos.
The apex socio-cultural body further recalled that past administrations of former Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu and Chief Theodore Orji in Abia State fully appointed many numbers of non-indigenes from Yoruba and Hausa extraction into the state’s government, positing that the description of the Tinubu as the protector of the Igbo cannot be justified.
The Pan-Igbo organization said it wished the APC national leader quick recovery and sound health and advised him to jettison whatever political ambition, as Nigerians cannot afford again to electa a sick person as President to steer the ship of this country as witnessed under the current President, Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Ohanaeze, “We wish Ashiwaju of Yoruba land a quick recovery from London health trip, but, Ohanaeze will want to make it clear that we have not endorsed Tinubu or anybody for 2023 presidency, it will not be in the interest of the country to kick out Igbo nation from clinching the presidential seat, because, other regions in this country have taken their turns, natural justice demand that other ethnic nationalities must rally round the people of the southeast extraction to produce Buhari’s successor.
“Again, Ohanaeze doesn’t think that Nigerians will afford again to elect aa sick president as seen in our current President’s earlie medical trips which nearly led this great nation into economic and political instability. So, as we wish him good health, and appreciate his contributions to nation-building, we want to also urge him to continue playing his advisory role, as his name will remain in history, on the quest of all Nigerians to use this current democratic governance towards achieving a greater Nigeria where justice, equity, fairness and peace will guide our daily activities, characters, policies and programs, and as well as our electoral process.
“It must be a mistake for anybody to assume that Bola Tinubu is the protector of the Igbos. Ndigbo will not be in a hurry to recall the eviction notice slammed on Igbos in Lagos by the Oba of Lagos that almost brought disaffection between our brothers and sisters and the host ethnic nationality in Lagos. What were the contributions or efforts of Tinubu then in calling the monarch to order over the unlawful eviction order.
“Ohanaeze reiterates unequivocally that Igbo nation must produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023 to ensure the stability and unification of the country. In as much as the constitution of this country guarantees citizen’s rights to vie for political position of choice, we insist that natural justice demands that Bola Tinubu and his likes should support presidential project of the southeast of Igbo bloc. There is no doubt, very and quite unfair that the Igbo nation had been completely cut off from the sensitive affairs and governance of Nigeria, which is the major factor that sprung up agitations across Igbo land and beyond.
“On the secessionist agitation, Ohanaeze maintains its stand that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu should be released unconditionally, followed with other pro-Biafra agitators incarcerated in the nation’s security formations across the country. They should be released and granted presidential amnesty, from there, the federal government, Igbo leaders, and the leadership of Kanu-led separatist organization, the IPOB will engage in dialogue to restore the lost peace and unity of Nigeria”.

Big Brother Naija season 6 housemate, Emmanuel has revealed that he wants Angel because she’s a smart girl.
Emmanuel said this while having a conversation with Angel.
Angel had asked why it’s hard for him to look her in the eye anytime they are having a conversation.
In response, Emmanuel told her she knew why, adding that he cannot say much because of his current situation in the house.

Meanwhile, Liquorose and Emmanuel seemed to be in a ship and are being considered as the most serious pair in the house.
They are the only couple in Biggy’s house who seems to have a serious relationship as they have continuously professed their love to each other.
They also do everything that couples who are intimate do and are practically seen everywhere together.
However, to the shock of viewers at home, Liquorose told Biggy that she wasn’t in any relationship with Emmanuel.
It’s still not clear what Emmanuel wants with Angel as the duo seem to have an awkward relationship in the house.

A Northern Coalition Group, known as The Movement For A New Arewa, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to grant former governor of Plateau State, Mr Joshua Dariye, presidential pardon for the interest of peace.
The group noted that Chief Joshua Dariye has been in prison since the inception of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in the country.
National President and National Secretary, Mal. Abdulkareem Bayero and Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, in a statement “called on President Muhammadu Buhari in his usual magnanimity to extend presidential pardon to former Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye for the interest of peace.”
The group observed that “Chief Joshua Dariye who has been in prison since the inception of the present administration needs to breath an air of freedom as a citizen of the country.”
<a name='more' id="more"></a>The group is of the opinion that if the north is to return to its past glory, the likes of Senator Joshua Dariye must be released from prison to join in the peace building process of the country.
According to the statement, “Our coalition is dogged in its commitment to establishing a New North where trust, friendship, mutual respect, unity, and different ethnic groups will co-habit again peacefully, in the spirit of one north as preached, demonstrated, lived and died for by our founding fathers the Sarduanas, Tafawa Balewas, Sunday Awoniyis, Gowon, Joseph Tarkas, among others.”
The group opined, “We must strive by all means to foster and forge unity and peace towards achieving a united north and by extension a united Nigerian as a people.”
It noted that “insecurity has no respect for religion, ethnic group or region, therefore to avoid the disintegration of the country which has been deeply divided and polarised along religion and ethnic lines, North must remain resolute in their commitment to building and cementing a virile region through promoting peace, unity, religion tolerance and inter-ethnic harmony which it is known for.”
The group expressed delight with President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Defence, National Security Adviser, Service Chiefs for their new approach of taking the war to the bandits.
It noted that the renewed zeal by the military was no doubt yielding results in Zamfara, and called for extension to all the 19 northern states to annihilate the bandits, kidnappers and all criminal elements “so that they (bandits) would be addressed in the language they understand.”

Following the military coup in Guinea, a mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will visit the country today (Thursday).
A communique issued late Wednesday evening after a virtual meeting of the organization, convened by its chairman, Nans Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, said it was meant to discuss the political situations in Guinea.
According to the communique, the visit to the country by ECOWAS mission would be led by Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchweu with representatives from Burkina Faso, Nigeria and the ECOWAS Commission.
Participants at the meeting suspended Guinea membership and suggested for the immediate restoration of civil rule in the country.

According to the communique, “The authority expresses deep concern over the political developments in the Republic of Guinea following the coup d’etat of September 5, 2021, and their consequences for regional peace and stability.”
ECOWAS, therefore, enjoined the defense and security forces to maintain a constitutional posture, while demanding for the immediate restoration of civilian rule in Guinea.
The communique reiterated its strong opposition to any political change by unconstitutional means and condemned the military coup in the country.
Recall that on Sunday, Mamady Doumbouya, a lieutenant-colonel, announced that his forces had arrested Guinea’s President Alpha Conde and dissolved the government and national institutions.

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has promised his teammates the sum of N5million to share.
Musa was due to receive N10million after his supposed 100th cap for the national team, after playing in the 2-1 win over Cape Verde.
In rewarding the milestone, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick disclosed the federation will begin to reward every player who reaches the centurion mark.
Immediately after Pinnick’s comment, Musa gave out half of his reward to his teammates as he thanked them for their support.

“It’s not easy to come off the bench in those moments of matches.”

Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned visit to the State.
The State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Ogubundu Nwadike, said Buhari’s visit is a mockery on the people of the State.
Governor Hope Uzodinma had recently disclosed that the President would visit the state on Thursday.
Uzodinma said Buhari would commission significant projects during his official visit to the state.

However, Nwadike accused Buhari and Uzodinma of causing war in Imo State.
In a statement by Nwadike, he said: “In recent months, Imo, once a land of peace, was forcibly turned into a theatre of war. Today, Imo knows no peace principally because the governor is on the warpath.
“Imo under Governor Hope Uzodinma is a police state. Basic freedoms of the people have been curtailed while an army of occupation reigns and rules in the land. The entire scenario leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
“For us in PDP, the presidential visit is a deliberate ploy to mock the people of the state to their very face. This is callous and inhuman.”

Deji Adeyanju, socio-political activist, has predicted the outcome of the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Imo State.
Adeyanju said the sit-at-home order to protest President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Imo State would record 98 percent success.
The rights activist pointed out that business activists would be grounded in Imo State as a result of the order.
In a tweet, the convener of Concerned Nigerians, said there is a general consensus to comply with the order.

The crisis over the Value Added Tax deepened on Wednesday with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, ordering companies based in the state to start paying VAT to the state government.

Wike gave the order during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt with representatives of Shell Petroleum Development Company and other oil companies as well as business owners in the state.
 
The governor, who accused the Federal Inland Revenue Service of threatening companies based in the state, said any organisation that failed to pay VAT to the state would be sealed off.
 
Similarly, the Lagos State Government said on Wednesday that a letter written by the FIRS to the National Assembly seeking inclusion of VAT on the exclusive legislative list would not stop the bill on the tax currently before the state House of Assembly.
 
It can be recalled that the FIRS, in a bid to retain the collection of the tax, wrote to the National Assembly to seek the inclusion of VAT collection in the exclusive legislative list.
 
Last month, the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, in a judgment in suit number FHC/PH/CS/149/2020, held that the Rivers State Government had the powers to collect VAT within its territory.
Although the FIRS applied to the court for a stay of execution, Justice Stephen Pam rejected the application, saying granting it would negate the principle of equity.
 
The VAT crisis took a different dimension on Monday when a bill to empower the Lagos State Government to collect the tax scaled the second reading in the state House of Assembly.
 
On Tuesday, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly said it would soon start work on a bill to enable the state government to collect VAT.
 
On Wednesday, a letter was written by the FIRS to the National Assembly on the matter.
 
The letter, signed by the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, Muhammad Nami, and dated July 1, 2021, was addressed to the Chairman of the House Constitution Review Committee, who is also the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase.
 
The letter, with reference number FIRS/EC/CWREP/0416/21/037, which was received by Wase’s office on July 2, was titled, ‘Request for sponsorship of a bill for the establishment of the proposed Federal Revenue Court of Nigeria and the insertion of Value Added Tax under item 58 of the exclusive legislative list’.
 
The federal tax agency specifically pleaded with the legislature to vest exclusively in it all adjudication of tax disputes, including federal tax laws, Companies Income Tax, Petroleum Tax, Income Tax, Capital Gain Tax, Stamp Duty, VAT, taxes, levies and other laws, regulations, proclamations, government notices and rules.
 
The letter read in part, “The Federal Inland Revenue Service further proposes the amendment of Section 251 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the FRN, 1999 (amended) by removing the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal High Court only on anything connected or related to federal tax matters since same would be vested in the proposed federal revenue court.
 
“The Federal Inland Revenue Service also proposes the insertion of Value Added Tax immediately after Stamp Duties under item 58, part II of the 2nd schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the FRN.
 
“The Federal Inland Revenue Service appreciates the maximum cooperation and support we are receiving from your good office on tax matters generally.
 
“This has boosted our morale and determination to do more for the government in tax revenue generation.
 
“The FIRS therefore wishes to further request that the House of Representatives consider the request for the establishment of the Federal Revenue Court. “
 
Wike unveils Rivers VAT law, orders business owners to begin payment
The Rivers State governor, on Wednesday, ordered construction firms, manufacturers and business owners as well as other firms in the oil-rich state to begin the remittance of their VAT to the state from this month.
 
The governor, who said Rivers State was generating an average of N15bn VAT to the FIRS monthly, lamented that the Federal Government was only giving the state a paltry 25 per cent of the revenue.
 
Wike said he did not care if the heavens would fall and insisted that Rivers money was not meant for “Abuja people,” but for the development of the state, adding that the legal system had empowered the state to begin the collection of VAT.
 
He also said the amount being generated into the FIRS purse was too much and, therefore, slashed the amount payable as VAT by business owners. The governor, however, did not specify the percentage to be paid.
 
Wike unveiled the Rivers State VAT Law, 2021 and vowed to sanction any firm that failed to comply with the remittance of VAT to the state revenue board.
 
‘River generated N15bn VAT in June, got N4.7bn; Kano earned N2.8bn, got same back’
 
Speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting, Wike lamented the injustice in the country, saying Rivers State generated N15bn VAT revenue in June this year, but got N4.7bn in return, while Kano generated N2.8bn in the same month and got the same N2.8bn back, adding, “Sometimes, you don’t want to believe these things exist.
 
“Rivers State is challenging the FIRS from collecting VAT in Rivers State. I am not challenging the FIRS from collecting VAT in Abuja. Let it be understood. The law says Rivers must collect VAT in the state.”
 
“The Federal Government surreptitiously lobbied to amend the constitution to place VAT collection in the exclusive legislative list.
 
 
“We have challenged it and we have no apologies to anybody. I don’t want to be in the good books of anybody, but in the good books of God.
 
“You don’t bully a state like us. The FIRS should be very careful. I have the political will to do a lot of things. If they continue to bully us, I will take (over) all their offices in the state.”
 
The governor warned oil companies and business owners not to henceforth remit their VAT to the FIRS, but to the Rivers State Government.
 
He stated, “I don’t want you to fall prey to the people, who think they can use force to take our money.
 
“If you want to take advantage and say you don’t know who to pay to, it is a lie, you know.
 
“From this September, we must collect all our VAT.
Wike orders RIRS to collect VAT, warns defaulters
“All the banks playing pranks by saying they have not heard from their head offices, I will seal off your branches. If I say I will, know that I will.
 
“We will not look back but seal off the premises of such companies.”
 
Wike added that Rivers did not need the Nigeria Police Force to enforce the collection of VAT, but would use the state-created security outfit that was backed by law.
 
He stated, “I will be happy at my time that heaven came down, because I will create a record that it was my time that heaven came down.
 
“We don’t have to use the police; we have our security (outfit) as allowed by law and we will use it.
 
“Please tell your authorities to pay our VAT to our revenue board, which of course you have been told how to do it.
 
“Until there is a (court) order stopping us, we won’t stop the collection. If an appeal (court) revokes it, no problem, but the position of the law today is that VAT is for Rivers State.
 
“We are even going back to collect the one they took before. All the ones they have taken before, we are compiling it; they have to pay back to us.
 
“All those states that are loyal (to the Federal Government) should wait, but the Rivers State Government will collect all that is due to us within the confinement of the law; we will not go outside the law.
 
“I have looked at the total VAT every month, I have even reduced it; I don’t want this; it is too much; I have even reduced it to what I will collect and I have projects to do with it every month.
 
“The FIRS cannot threaten you. We are the landlords here, I hope you know that. We have enormous powers to use by law.”
 
All governors will perform with adequate revenue, says Wike
 
Wike also said all state governors would perform well if their states were getting enough revenue.
 
He said, “The problem with us is that we only depend on federal allocations. That is why you hear that most governors are not performing; how will they perform?
 
“Please, pay the money on time, because every Friday, I will check it.
 
“By the end of this month, I want to see the VAT collection.
 
“If somebody takes what does not belong to them, what do you call them? These people, who take what does not belong to them, collect it for us and you will see what we will do with it; we will turn this state around.
 
“I have told the attorney-general to give you the VAT law, the Withholding Tax, the Stamp Duty and everything payable to us.
 
“The Rivers State Government is fully in charge of this and we will not hesitate to apply sanctions as provided under the VAT Law No. 4 of Rivers State, 2021.”
 
Wike also alleged that the FIRS was writing threat letters to intimidate corporate organisations to pay taxes to it, even after it lost an appeal that sought a stay of execution of the declarative ruling on VAT collection in the state.
 
VAT collection won’t work at state level, says FIRS
 
But the FIRS said the collection of VAT at the sub-national level was not achievable in the country.
 
The Group Lead, Special Operations Group, FIRS, Matthew Gbonjubola, said this during a chat with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.
 
Gbonjubola said contrary to misconceptions in some quarters, the FIRS was administering VAT on behalf of the three tiers of government and not for the Federal Government alone.
 
According to him, the revenue from VAT is administered under an arrangement that allows the Federal Government to collect 15 per cent; the states, 50 per cent; and local governments, 35 per cent.
 
FIRS letter to N’Assembly won’t stop our bill – Lagos
 
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said the state would go ahead with its VAT bill irrespective of the action of the FIRS.
 
Omotoso, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Wednesday, said the state had the right to make laws that would help it to govern the people.
 
He said, “The FIRS has a right to write to the National Assembly to seek some concession in whatever aspect of any law it deems necessary; it is a right that nobody can take away from it; states also have a right to formulate laws that they think will help them in the business of government.

 The Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors on Wednesday blamed    the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, for the prolonged strike by resident doctors.<a name='more' id="more"></a>
The NMA’s General Secretary, Philips Ekpe; and the Vice President of NARD, Arome Adejo, made the position of their groups known in separate interviews with newsmen
The NARD had on August 2 begun a nationwide strike over the alleged failure of the Federal Government to pay doctors on residency training and integrate members of the association into the  Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.
On Tuesday, Ngige, in an interview with State House correspondents, claimed that the Federal Government did not owe any doctors, but the illegally employed ones.
But Arome told newsmen however that Ngige should be sacked for not telling the truth about the state of things.
He said, “NARD as a body calls for the sacking of Ngige for he is the major factor aggravating things; he is also coming out to tell lies about doctors and constantly aggravating the already tensed situation.”
He added that contrary to Ngige’s claim, the demands of the striking doctors had not been met.
He said, “The President should called us alongside Ngige; let him defend himself and let us defend ourselves, no demand has been met.
“LetNgige come out straight, no money has been paid and let the insurance money he said was paid be probed.
“You claimed to have paid insurance but the people who died have yet to be paid. The MRT fund that was paid, only a fraction was paid.
“On the illegal doctors; we were the ones who told them that there were some people like that. We told them last year, we wrote letters to him telling him that money has been paid wrongly to some individuals, we begged him to make sure that the money paid was returned to the right source.
“We compiled the names of those who were wrongly paid; he is misleading the President. All he came out to say are fallacies, he should stop inciting people against doctors; anytime he talks he speaks lies, we have evidences.”
Also, Ekpe told newsmen that the minister had turned the ongoing crises into a media war.
He said, “By now, we thought things would have been resolved and the court case would have been withdrawn, but nothing has been done.
“In fact, NARD believes that Ngige has gone to the Presidency to disrupt goodwill.
“Why is he drawing issues? Every day he talks, going from one media house to another. He has turned this to a media war.
“In fact, the meeting we proposed initially for tomorrow (Thursday), which has now been postponed, was initially based on hazard allowances and not on the ongoing crises or the ultimatum but then it was postponed with no reason.”
“Now he said there are illegal doctors; first let me say this, who employed the illegal doctors? Did NARD employ the doctors themselves? If you have an illegal doctor then let the CMD be held responsible and why is Ngige bringing this up at this point in time?
“He should pay the doctors for the work they have done. He should not order doctors back to work or order them to stop the strike. NMA is not interested in media fight, we want problems solved.”

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has said Antoine Griezmann was not the player they needed.
According to him, Griezmann did not fit into their system, which has led to Griezmann being sent back to Atletico Madrid on loan.

The Police anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad have arrested six suspects over their alleged connection in the murder of one Prince Eric Takerere and two mobile policemen.
They also allegedly carted away of their rifles as well as attempted to murder one Prince Franklyn Takerere.
The suspects include, Onoriode Shefo “AKA” Chikago “M” 36yrs, Omagbeosa Sholla “M” 30yrs, Godwin Obukoemu “AKA” Million “M” 30yrs, Ejime Mugagbam “M”34yrs, Ejiroghenen Nushe “M” 24yrs and Egho Monday “M” 28yrs.
They were arrested by the Police Operatives during a raid on their hideouts in Udu, Warri and Aladja Communities in Delta State.

The Delta State Police Command led by CP Ari Mohammed Ali confirmed the report in a statement signed by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe.

“They also led the operatives to their armoury where two AK47 rifles, one pump action gun, one locally made pistol, four magazines, seventy six rounds of live ammunition and thirty eight rounds of live cartridges were recovered.”

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, will receive the sum of N10million from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), for winning his 100th cap for the country.
This was confirmed by NFF president, Amaju Pinnick.
Musa achieved the milestone during the World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde on Tuesday.
The former Leicester City winger started the game, which the Eagles went on to win 2-1 in Mindelo.

Following the win at the Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena in Mindelo, Pinnick said: “The NFF will give Ahmed Musa N10 million for reaching the 100 caps.
“We will sustain this gesture and honour our players that hit 100 games henceforth.”
Musa made his debut for Nigeria at the age of 17 in August 2010.
He came on to replace John Mikel Obi in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.
Musa becomes the third player to reach 100 caps for Nigeria after Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama.

World Health Organisation (WHO) senior officials, on Tuesday, said the Delta strain remains the top concern in countries.
The experts found that the variant is highly contagious and appearing to “outcompete” others.
Their findings coincide with the emergence of the new ‘Mu’ variant which has spread to 49 states in America.
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO Technical Lead for COVID-19 called the Delta “most concerning” because of the increased transmissibility.

“It’s doubly transmissible compared to the ancestral strain, which means that it can spread to more people”, she said.
Kerkhove added that Delta continued to evolve and scientists were studying to see how the virus might be changing, with new variants coming up.
The official confirmed the proportion of Mu cases in South America was increasing, while numbers are decreasing in countries where the Delta variant is circulating.
Kerkhove said the WHO is seeing a lot of circulation among unvaccinated people but observes positive developments, including a reduction in hospitalisations and deaths among those inoculated against the disease.
Dr. Michael Ryan, Head of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, explained that viruses essentially compete against each other.
Though more COVID-19 variants may emerge, “not every variant means the sky is going to fall in”, Ryan noted
He added that each needs to be looked at for its characteristics in terms of potential to cause more severe disease, transmit and escape vaccines.

Legendary goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, has reacted to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has dismissed another lecturer, who was found guilty of s3.xual demeanor against a female student.
The lecturer, Dr. Adebayo Mosobalaje of the Department of English Language in the Faculty of Arts, was found guilty by the Joint Committee of Council and Senate of the institution.
According to a statement signed by the public relations officer of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju on Tuesday, the institution made the decision during its last sitting on Monday.
The Joint Committee of Council and Senate, which investigated the case of s3.xual harassment against Dr Mosobalaje, unambiguously declared “zero tolerance” to s3.xual harassment.

The OAU Management, in almost two weeks ago had inaugurated an “anti-s3.xual harassment policy”.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, reiterated the commitment of his administration to uphold the “Zero tolerance policy” for S3.xual harassment and other social vices.
The chairman of the University Council, Owelle Oscar Udoji has also pledged to support policies that promote mutual co existence between all the members of the university community.
