Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as Arsene Wenger's men were soundly trashed 4-0 by a much-improved Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday.<br />
<br />
Wenger's side fuelled talk of a sustained title push with an impressive victory over Manchester City on Monday, but were punished for a lethargic display on the south coast as the hosts ended their run of five league games without a win in style.<br />
<br />
Southampton had picked up just a point from their previous five outings, but, after a slow start, went ahead courtesy of Cuco Martina's impressive long-range effort 19 minutes in.<br />
<br />
On his maiden Premier League start, Martina became the first Curacaoan to score in the division and Southampton grew in confidence, doubling the lead 10 minutes into the second half via the first of a Shane Long brace.<br />

With limited attacking options on the bench, Wenger saw his side toil in the final third and struggle defensively as they failed to leapfrog leaders Leicester City - beaten 1-0 by Liverpool earlier in the day and two points clear of Arsenal.<br />
<br />
Instead, Southampton - missing the likes of injured pair Graziano Pelle and Cedric Soares - saw Jose Fonte head in a third from a corner and Long make it 4-0 in stoppage time shortly after being denied by the woodwork to seal the points on a hugely frustrating evening for the visitors.<br />
<br />
An unchanged Arsenal edged the opening stages, but fell behind to the hosts' first effort on target.<br />
<br />
Per Mertesacker only partially cleared Ryan Bertrand's delivery, allowing Martina to beat Petr Cech with a stunning outside-of-the-boot effort.<br />
<br />
James Ward-Prowse dragged a shot wide before the half-hour mark as the home side grew in confidence, with Steven Davis failing to muster a clean strike on goal after Laurent Koscielny lost possession.<br />
<br />
For all their early endeavour, Arsenal's best chances were a tame Theo Walcott shot easily gathered by Maarten Stekelenburg and a header from the Arsenal winger that found the side-netting.<br />
<br />
Long almost doubled Southampton's half-time lead, but the striker could only put his lob over the crossbar while Sadio Mane's dangerous delivery failed to get the necessary touch early on the second half.<br />
<br />
Virgil van Dijk had the ball in the net five minutes after the interval - his header adjudged offside - although Long did make it 2-0 with a breakaway goal before the hour.<br />
<br />
The Republic of Ireland international played a neat one-two with Mane, before turning his team-mate's cross past Cech from close range amid Arsenal complaints over a perceived trip from Long on Koscielny.<br />
<br />
Arsenal continued to flounder going forward, with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Joel Campbell largely anonymous in the face of incessant Saints pressure.<br />
<br />
Former Southampton man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced for the latter after the hour, but it was Southampton who remained the more clinical, skipper Fonte heading home from Bertrand's set-piece 21 minutes from time.<br />
<br />
The impressive Long hit the post, but was not to be denied a second when Dusan Tadic set him clear, the Saints forward finishing past Cech to complete a miserable outing for Wenger's men.<br />

Manchester City recovered from their disappointing defeat at Premier League title rivals Arsenal with a ruthless 4-1 victory over a hapless Sunderland, but there were concerns as captain Vincent Kompany limped off on his comeback from injury.<br />

Manuel Pellegrini's side were beaten 2-1 at Emirates Stadium on Monday in a defeat that left them six points adrift of surprise leaders Leicester City ahead of Saturday's matches.<br />
<br />
However, City turned on the style at the Etihad Stadium with the recalled Raheem Sterling and Wilfried Bony part of an excellent attacking unit alongside Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.<br />
<br />
The only concern for Pellegrini will be the sight of Kompany limping off with a seeming recurrence of the calf injury that sidelined him since early November, less than 10 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.<br />
<br />
In a clinical first-half showing, Sterling opened the scoring with a header and Yaya Toure quickly doubled the lead in superb fashion from long range.<br />
<br />
Bony had noted his disappointment at being dropped in favour of Sergio Aguero for the Arsenal loss, but he responded by heading home his fourth goal in his last six appearances.<br />
<br />
De Bruyne deservedly got on the scoresheet with his 10th goal in all competitions this season and, after Fabio Borini scored a consolation for Sunderland, Bony blazed a penalty over the crossbar.<br />
<br />
<br />
It mattered little and City are now just three points adrift of Leicester, while Sunderland remain mired in relegation in 19th.<br />
<br />
Sunderland made six changes from the side that lost 3-1 at Chelsea, but their defensive frailties were exposed from the off and Sterling was celebrating in the 12th minute.<br />
<br />
De Bruyne collected Aleksandar Kolarov's overhit cross and the Belgian's delivery was headed in at the back post by the former Liverpool winger.<br />
<br />
Four minutes later the home fans were on their feet again as Toure's quick feet bamboozled Jordi Gomez and the midfielder brilliantly placed his left-foot shot into the bottom-right corner from 25 yards.<br />
<br />
Danny Graham missed with a close-range header that offered a warning to City, but the unrelenting hosts went 3-0 ahead in the 22nd minute when Bony expertly headed home De Bruyne's wickedly whipped free-kick.<br />
<br />
City's attack continued to terrorise Sunderland and Sterling had the ball in the net again before half-time but the whistle had gone for offside.<br />
<br />
The hosts remained in the ascendancy after the break and Vito Mannone smartly parried Silva's effort after the Spaniard combined brilliantly with De Bruyne.<br />
<br />
But it was a temporary reprieve as De Bruyne's attempted pass into Bony was deflected back into his path by a Sunderland foot and he coolly slotted under Mannone.<br />
<br />
There was a blot on City's card when Lee Cattermole's attempted shot was turned goalwards by Borini, who tapped in the rebound after Joe Hart saved his initial effort.<br />
<br />
Bony wasted the chance to stretch City's lead when he fired wildly over from the penalty spot after Silva was clipped by Sebastian Coates.<br />
<br />
And there was more worry for City when Kompany, who had earlier replaced Nicolas Otamendi, limped off to be replaced by Martin Demichelis.<br />

Riyad Mahrez looked a threat on the counter throughout for Leicester but Ranieri's men found it difficult to sustain an attacking threat against Liverpool's intense pressing.<br />
<br />
N'Golo Kante came close to an equaliser but Liverpool held out for the three points, in the process becoming the first side in the top flight this season to keep a clean sheet against Leicester.<br />

In an end-to-end opening period, Leicester had a penalty shout waved away when Mamadou Sakho tripped Shinji Okazaki, before Adam Lallana blasted just past the near post as he raced into the visitors' area.<br />
<br />
Origi shot just over the bar after cutting in from the right before forcing Kasper Schmeichel into a good save at his near post after he drove into space in the area, but the Belgian forward limped off shortly before half-time with what looked to be a problem with his right hamstring.<br />
<br />
Liverpool almost found themselves a goal behind when the in-form Mahrez showed great feet to skip into space 18 yards out, but Simon Mignolet reacted well to parry his rasping drive over the bar.<br />
<br />
Klopp's side had fired in 18 shots in the first half but Leicester kept them at arm's length early in the second, despite the hosts continuing to dominate possession, until Benteke struck just past the hour mark.<br />
<br />
Firmino clipped a cross from the left into the path of Benteke, who placed a right-footed shot on the stretch into the bottom-right corner, giving Schmeichel no chance.<br />
<br />
Ranieri substituted top scorer Jamie Vardy, who took a knock to his ankle early in the half, as Leicester sought a foothold in the match, and Mignolet was forced into a fine reaction stop to keep out Kante's attempt from close range.<br />

The visitors continued to apply late pressure but Liverpool's rearguard remained resolute, before Benteke missed a golden chance to make it 2-0 in injury time, as Anfield celebrated a first home win since November 29 against Swansea City.

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Sani Sidi, on Friday said there was no remaining community in the North East under the control of Boko Haram insurgents.<br />

In his speech, the president of the group, Isah Abubakar, hailed the NEMA boss for his achievements at the emergency agency.<br />

“Before now, NEMA was just an agency but you made it a working one during your tenure,” Mr. Isah said.<br />

Their public communication organs have, in particular, become increasingly combative against the exercise. All that the president, leading the APC change orchestra, is trying to do is to revamp a moribund nation through economic growth, jobs and recovered looted funds. Sadly, only a few, if any in Wadata House are treating the war against corruption as the extra-ordinary event which it is. Instead, when they speak up, they do so most ardently against it. In a clear demonstration of obstructionist politics, they challenge the government in every move it makes, but fail to spell out alternative roadmaps to curbing the monstrous corruption that threatens to consume the country; they rush to condemn and dramatise even the smallest of measures which, given time and patience will manifest through positive outcomes.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; line-height: 26.25px; margin-bottom: 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; zoom: 1;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Doing this gives the PDP the illusion of being an effective opposition party, but taken in the context of national interest and the mood of the nation, it is doubtful it it is yielding anything beyond limited political returns. To most Nigerians, the cacophonous opposition is just a media spectacle to distract or mellow the president.</span></div>

Then, the leader of the reform movement got himself mired in allegations leading to court charges of the theft of billions of Naira voted for weapons purchase to fight terror in the North-East. Chief Raymond Dokpesi’s trial (and Col. Dasuki’s) is no doubt a serious blow to any prospects of a turn-around in the PDP.</span></div>

The military, in particular, treated him so badly that its leaders kept silent when the PDP charged that he didn’t have WAEC papers. One shameless Army Records officer said that the former Head of State had no records at all under their system. General Buhari went without a full compliment of armed guards from the army he served at the highest level until the dastardly bomb attack on his convoy in April 2014. It was at this time that the Chief of Army Staff at that time thought it necessary to reinstate the armed convoy to protect him. When they brought the two cars within a few days of his being bombed, the staff of the General were merely informed that this was from the Federal Government, in fulfillment of its obligation to him. Since this was an entitlement long-overdue, not minding that it came short of what was expected, there was absolutely nothing wrong on the part of the General for accepting that which was due to him.</span></div>

One Chadian political party published an advertorial asking their government to procure and issue permanent voters cards as well as the use of card readers in the coming election and if the funds were not available, “let us borrow from Nigeria” for the coming elections.</span></div>

Andrés Moreno Sepúlveda weighed 70 stone (980lbs) at his heaviest, and became internationally renown. Last month Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid footballer, sent him a signed shirt in a bid to encourage him in his quest to lose weight.<br />

"I want to thank everyone, especially Ronaldo, for taking interest in my case," he said.<br />
<br />
"Sometimes you think that people live in another world way from the people, but that is not the case.<br />
"I feel as if I have got a Christmas gift before Christmas."<br />
<br />
He died in Ciudad Obregón, his home city in the southern Mexican state of Sonora.<br />
<br />
Carmen Palacios, his publicist, confirmed the news, telling Univision that he died from a heart attack at 8.30am, en route to San Jose hospital.<br />
<br />
Ms Palacios said that he had undergone weight loss surgery in October and was doing well, having lost weight and regaining the ability to wash himself and wear trainers.<br />
<br />
"He was really happy," she said.<br />
<br />
Moreno was always big – when he was born, he weighed 13lbs. By the age of 10 he weighed 19 stone. Yet he was determined to lose weight this year.<br />
<br />
José Castañeda, the surgeon who performed the weight loss surgery, said Moreno was expected to lose 58 stone, to take his weight down to 12 stone – the normal weight for a man of his 5ft 7 stature.<br />
The surgery was difficult because the team had never operated on anyone that heavy, and were unsure whether the operating table could support his weight.<br />
<br />
Yet it was cautiously welcomed as a success. Moreno had started walking again this month, leaning on a relative for support.<br />
<br />
He will be buried on Saturday in Sonora.

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has described Federal Government’s announced reduction of petrol pump price from N87 to N85 per litre as a continuation of the deceit propagated by All Progressives Congress (APC) led government.<br />

The governor who also challenged the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed to relocate to Sambisa in Borno State or Yobe and move around there without heavy military security if indeed he was sure that Boko Haram had been defeated.<br />

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “only God’s intervention can save Nigeria from the present economic and security problems as it is glaring that the man running the affairs of the country at the federal level does not have any answer to the problems.”<br />
<br />
He said; “Even the Holy Bible said in James 1:5 that if anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God and as it is, Nigerians must assist the President in asking for wisdom and understanding to tackle the country’s economic and security problems before Nigeria is further plunged into more woes with the federal government’s decision to borrow N2.2 Trillion, which translates to N6.066 billion per day to finance the 2016 Budget.” He described the Federal Government’s announced reduction of petrol pump price from N87 to N85 per litre as a continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s governance by deceit, saying; “Even secondary school students of economics know that you cannot deregulate and regulate at the same time.”<br />
<br />
The governor said; “it is only in a confused and clueless economy that government will plan to spend more when revenue has reduced by more than 50 percent.” Governor Fayose, who maintained that petrol will not sell below N100 per litre in 2016, added that; “Even now that the price is N87 and subsidy is yet to be removed, Nigerians are buying at between N130 and N300 per litre. What will now happen when they remove subsidy and allow market forces to determine the price?”<br />

The governor described claimed by the Information Minister that Boko Haram insurgents had been defeated as strange, saying; “Nigerians will only take the minister serious if he relocates to either Sambisa in Borno State or Yobe State and stay there till the end of March, next year without heavy military security.”<br />

He said; “To show their level of confusion, two days after the Minister of Information declared that Boko Haram had been defeated, President Buhari said the government would persuade Boko Haram to abandon their fight. One then wonders how the same Boko Haram insurgents Lai Mohammed said were already defeated will have to be persuaded to abandon their fight.<br />
<br />
“Interestingly, the same Boko Haram that Lai Mohammed said had been defeated reported attacked Kimba village in Gur ward of Biu Local Government Area of Borno State yesterday night.<br />
<br />
“Therefore, the Information Minister must show Nigerians how peaceful Borno and Yobe States have become after the defeat of Boko Haram by relocating to either Sambisa, Maiduguri or Yobe.”

A text message sent by Standard Chartered Bank, among other banks in the country, said the service will stop in Jan. 1. “Dear Client, from January 1, 2016, you will be unable to use your Naira card abroad. This is due to shortage of FX. We regret any inconveniences,” the message by the bank said.<br />

The Director, Monetary Policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Moses Tule, said that the nation’s foreign reserves has been heavily depleted due to the fall in the price of oil and as such, it had to place some restrictions on the use of naira debit cards in addition to banning the use of the United States dollar as a substitute for the naira.<br />

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu,, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have urged Christians to imbibe the lessons of the birth of Jesus Christ.<br />

In a Christmas message to Nigerians, Mr. Tinubu said emulating Christ is the only way the blessings of Christmas would always abide beyond the celebration.<br />
<br />
“The lessons of humility, selflessness, humanity and meekness that we glean from the evergreen Christmas story must not depart from our relationships here on earth,” said Mr. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria is at the cusp of a new moral threshold and the role of religion in making a success of this effort is critical. While wishing Nigerians a merry Christmas we must not forget that Nigeria needs us to contribute our quota in making it achieve greatness.”<br />

Mr. Tinubu advised Nigerians to make the sacrifice necessary and appropriate in making the new political dispensation a success.<br />

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, Mr. Dogara said the present administration is determined to surmount the many challenges facing the country.<br />

“Europe is struggling with refugees, Arab countries are in turmoil while some countries are even failed states.<br />
”Here in Nigeria, the greatest challenge is that of drop in revenue and income distribution”.<br />
Mr. Dogara also described these challenges as inherited, saying that: “before this government took over, workers in many states were not paid salaries for months, our economy was badly damaged, and there was massive looting.”<br />

While expressing hope and optimism for a better tomorrow, the Speaker said a leadership had emerged with a will to tackle the challenges.<br />
“Of course it will take time. The president was humble enough to apologise to Nigerians for the hardship over fuel scarcity.<br />
“Every generation has come with some peculiar problems and also come with men and women that will help overcome those challenges. That is the message of hope that I bring to you. Working together, we will be able to solve those problems.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has enjoined all those in leadership positions across the strata of the society to come together and pull the country out of its current challenges.<br />
<br />
He made the call on Friday when he received a cross section of residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led by the Minister of the FCT, Muhammad Bello, who paid him Christmas homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />
<br />
According to him, Nigeria’s main problem is how to get the right leadership in place for the general good of the society.<br />
<br />
He said “for the leaderships at various stages, both civil and spiritual, we need to be patient in managing the society.<br />

“We need to come together and pull the country out of these problems that we find ourselves, everybody in the world believes that Nigeria is a lucky country because of its natural resources.<br />
“Our problem is how to organise ourselves and how to get the right leadership in place.’’<br />
On security challenges, Buhari said no society developed in an atmosphere of insecurity and social discontent.<br />

He, therefore, maintained that his administration was determined to persuade the Boko Haram militants if they could be persuaded to allow peace to reign in the country.<br />
The President expressed concern over the pathetic conditions of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in some parts of the country and urged Nigerians to partner with government in uplifting the quality of life of the IDPs.<br />
<br />
He commended the security agencies, the Victims Support Fund led by Retired Gen. T. Y. Danjuma and the G-7 for their support and assistances to the IDPs.<br />
He added that “we appreciate that the security agencies are doing their best and their best is showing and we have to continue praying for them.<br />
“There can be no development without security; we have to continue to pray.<br />
<br />
“If we have two million people as IDPs and 70 per cent are women and children and 30 per cent of them are children, some them are orphans, they will grew up not knowing their parents, tradition or culture, then, as leaders we have a weighty responsibility to ensure that infrastructure for the orphans are taken care of.<br />
<br />
“As leaders, we must realise that the most important thing for those children is that they must not be denied education; schools must be rebuilt.<br />
<br />
“We also thank (Victims Support Fund) Danjuma and the G-7 led by the U.S.; they have been doing their best to help Nigeria to train our military and provide support to the IDPs and areas affected by the insurgency.’’<br />
<br />
Earlier, the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, and the leader of the Christian community in Abuja, Israel Akanji, commended the President for his vision and leadership qualities.<br />
<br />
Mr. Akanji urged Nigerians, irrespective of socio-political backgrounds, to support and show more understanding to the various policies and programmes of the government meant to pull the country out of its challenges.<br />
<br />
Highlight of the event was the presentation of Christmas cards to President Buhari by various groups in the FCT.<br />

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria has accused the Nigerian Army of trying to suppress the truth about the clash that resulted in the deaths of many of its members.<br />
<br />
In a statement by the President of its media forum, Ibrahim Musa, the IMN said the army was threatening its members and trying to suppress the rights of its members to freedom of speech and expression.<br />
<br />
It issued the statement, which was published on its website, in response to the alarm raised by the army on Thursday that the sect was carrying out a campaign of calumny against it.<br />

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, had said that the smear campaign was being led by a lecturer of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Abdulahi Danladi.<br />

Usman explained that the lecturer solicited support for the group and distorted the facts of the December 12, 2015 clash between the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, and the IMN in Zaria.<br />
<br />
He said, “The Nigerian Army is aware of a clandestine campaign of calumny and misinformation on the incident of 12 December 2015 in Zaria by a group of high ranking members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria led by one Doctor Abdullahi Danladi, a Lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.<br />
<br />
“Earlier today (Thursday) he was at the university soliciting support and telling lies about the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also went further to make false and unfounded allegations of casualty figures and desecration of burial grounds. It is preposterous and shows lack of concern and respect for peace and tranquility.”<br />
<br />
He warned the lecturer and his group to desist from acts considered capable of misinforming the members of the public.<br />
<br />
The movement, however, said the army’s claims amounted to “another round of violating a citizen’s right to express himself”.<br />
<br />
It said, “Whatever Dr. Abdullahi Danladi might have said that is provoking a threat to his life by the Army Spokesperson would not be anything less than what several human right groups, especially the Human Rights Watch have stated.<br />
<br />
“This is because the Army had earlier underestimated the responsiveness and pro-activeness of the Islamic Movement in its efforts to cover-up its mess and now that everything is coming out to the bare the Army is jittery with the outcome.<br />
“Hence, what is now left for the Army and the government is to threaten the lives or even eliminate those they could blame for letting the world know of their crimes instead of taking corrective measures.”<br />
<br />
The sect called on well-meaning individuals and groups to rise up against human rights violation.<br />
<br />
“It is the duty of Nigerians to say no to impunity and misuse of office by the Army Spokesperson to threaten lives of individuals especially those who stand against injustice,” it said.<br />
<br />
There have been conflicting reports about the number of people killed in the December 12 clash with the army, the sect and human rights groups all giving different figures.<br />
<br />
While the sect claims that up to 1,000 of its members were killed, Human Rights Watch puts the figure at 300.<br />
<br />
The army has insisted over time that it was forced to open fire on the members of the group to prevent an attack on the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai.<br />

Minister of State for Petroleum , Dr Ibe Kachikwu who disclosed this during a tour of the Port Harcourt refinery on Christmas Day expressed hope that the new price regime may come on stream January next year.<br />

He said efforts were on to get the refinery to achieve 60 percent production capacity and to supply about 11 million liters of petrol daily.<br />

“If you look at the new PPPRA template that we developed and which I just signed off two days ago, when it is announced you will find out that for now ,and I use the emphatic word of the President for now, the price of the refined product will actually be lower than 87 naira, It will be 85. We will probably announce that in January if the prices hold.<br />
<br />
“like I said, we have done a modulation calculation and it is showing us below N87. I imagine that if PPPRA publishes it today, it will become effective immediately. But the 1st of January that is when we are looking at.”<br />
<br />
“What that does for you is that its modulating. If it goes up you move up, if it comes down you come down. So we take away the fact of having to go find funds to pay for these subsidies that we cannot afford.<br />
<br />
“More importantly we try to be as close to the pump price that we have now as possible,” he said.<br />
<br />
Kachikwu who is also the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC said government had resolved to scrap oil subsidy because of alleged fraud around it.<br />
<br />
“So for the first time people will understand that the pricing modulation I was talking about is not a gimmick. It is for real. The objective is that we cannot afford to continue to subsidize .We can’t even understand where those subsidies were going to. There is a lot of fraud elements in it so we need to cut that of.<br />
<br />
The second is the earning capacity of the Federal Government is deteriorating by the day with lower prices of crude “, he said.<br />
<br />
He also said there was improvement in security of pipelines with the engagement of private contractors by the federal government.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has said that someone who believes in the State and has the capacity to manage it will emerge as candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC) and win the votes of the people as the Governor in the 2016 gubernatorial election in the State.<br />

Though, nobody could give an account of what caused the fire, one Segun, a trader in the market said the fire started after after he left his shop where he had attended to a customer.<br />
<br />
He said, “Shortly after I attended to a customer who called me on phone, I had the call that the shops had caught fire”.<br />
<br />
Another trader, Ade said he lost planks and equipment worth more than N5m in their shops.<br />
<br />
Mr. Afolabi said several sawing machines and other logging equipment were lost to the fire.<br />
<br />
He rated the fire service men low saying , ‎“Each time the vehicle left to refill water, we lost more shops because the fire would gain more ground. Don’t forget this is the time of the year when fire incidents are rampant because we are in the dry season. More fire service vehicles are needed to forestall possible overnight fire here. As you can see, we now pay to bring water tanker to help the fire service men.”<br />

He called on the state government to come to the aid of the traders.

Some of the relations revealed that they decided to search the bushes because they got information that many people scampered into the bushes while attempting to escape from the scene of the incident.<br />

A middle aged woman, Amaka said she is still in shock. According to her, “I cannot just believe that my maid who was sent to refill gas at the factory is gone for ever.<br />
<br />
“I am in deep trouble, what will I tell the family of the girl, I just brought her from the village last three months with the promise that I would help sponsor her education, I have gone to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) Nnewi mortuary where the corpses are deposited but my maid is not there. Will I just go and tell the parents that their daughter is dead without the corpse,” she queried.<br />
<br />
A staff of Chikason Group who spoke on condition of anonymity said the workers recently concluded a two-week fasting and prayer after a prophet allegedly warned the Chairman of the group of the impending doom.<br />
<br />
He however stated that the prophet did not specify which of the factories that would be affected, a situation he said made every worker in the group to participate actively in the prayer sessions.<br />
<br />
“I don’t know why all these bad things are happening. Our Chairman is a very good man who is so passionate about the welfare of the downtrodden even at great personal cost. Last time two of his fully-loaded trucks just disappeared on the face of the earth, those vehicles carried items running into millions of naira, that one is yet to be resolved and now this fire disaster,” he said<br />

The Chikason staff however, did not mention the name of the prophet but said that the man actually told them to pray against an impending danger<br />

Meanwhile traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu in company of his council of titled Chiefs has visited the scene of the fire incident, a spokesman for the royal father and former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party PDP Anambra state, Chief Dan Ulasi told newsmen that Nnewi has never experienced such a level of devastation in its entire history.<br />

He pointed out that the Igwe and his cabinet visited the victims who are recuperating in the hospitals in Nnewi while some other ones in critical conditions have been referred to Enugu.<br />
<br />
The monarch expressed shock that an industrial town like Nnewi does not have a functional Fire Service Station inspite of the strategic importance of the the town to the state in particular and Nigeria in general, urging the government to address the anomaly.<br />
<br />
A member of House of Representatives for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency Hon Chris Azubogu who also visited the scene of the explosion noted that the accident has cast a big shadow on the bright light of Christmas for the people of the town.<br />
<br />
Hon.Azubogu prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims of the inferno as well prayed for quick recovery of those that are still in the hospital.<br />
<br />
The lawmaker said that the accident has made it incumbent on the government to enforce safety standards, stressing the need for regulatory bodies like Department of Petroleum Resources and similar agencies to ensure that environmental impact assessment are properly carried out before giving license to people to set up filling stations.<br />

“That a bill is already on the floor of the House of Representatives which is aimed at empowering the fire stations at the federal and states so that they can carry out their duties as expected” he said.

“Tens” of people were killed in a huge Christmas Eve blast at an industrial gas plant in southeastern Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari said Friday.<br />

In an emailed press statement, Buhari said he was “greatly shaken and shocked by such large scale loss of human lives in a single industrial accident.”<br />

The blast at the gas plant happened around noon Thursday, engulfing the southeastern industrial city of Nnewi in black clouds of billowing smoke and leaving some victims charred beyond recognition.<br />
<br />
The fire raged for hours, gutting surrounding buildings and cars, with incinerated corpses later found face down in the smouldering rubble.<br />
<br />
Nnewi-ChikasonNnewi resident Ilochonwu Prince, who lives near the plant, said he thought a house had collapsed when he heard the blast at around 11:30 am on Thursday.<br />
<br />
“When there is a sound like that you run for your life, the volume was so high,” Prince said to AFP.<br />
<br />
“It was the 24th, they wanted to buy gas that they would use with their families for Christmas,” said the 26-year-old student, his voice shaking with emotion.<br />
<br />
“I saw four or five bodies that were dead already, the fire burnt them to ashes,” Prince said. “Most of them there, they were people on vacation, and they are just gone like that.”<br />
<br />
He said no one knew what set off the explosion because “none of them that were there survived, now nobody has a good story of what actually happened.”<br />
<br />
Authorities have given varying tolls.<br />
<br />
“It was a huge inferno,” police spokesman Ali Okechukwu told AFP. “We have found six bodies outside the perimeter, two more bodies were found in the adjoining building, bringing the total number of casualties to eight.”<br />
<br />
Okechukwu, who said a further six people were injured, added that an investigation into the explosion was under way.<br />
<br />
– ‘Everything was burnt’ –<br />
<br />
The gas-fuelled fire spread to a large surrounding area instantly, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman James Eze told AFP.<br />
<br />
“About 300 metres from the gas line all the plants there were burnt, houses from 400 metres away were affected, heavy machines too,” Eze said, speaking by phone from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital where victims of the blast were taken for treatment.<br />
<br />
Eze put the total number of casualties at four, barring any missing people who were burnt without any trace.<br />
<br />
“The fire (was) so strong as to burn the bones into ashes, but nobody has come forward with a missing person,” Eze said.<br />
<br />
There were conflicting accounts too about the cause of the explosion and the authorities have not explained what triggered it.<br />
<br />
Some local reports said the blast occurred after a truck was off-loading butane cooking gas for customers stocking up on fuel for Christmas festivities.<br />
<br />
Others said it was set off when a leaking consignment of gas was being moved to the company dump.<br />
<br />
“The cause is yet to be determined. A few people lost their lives. Some people suffered burns of various degrees,” said Anambra state governor, Willy Obiano, who visited the scene of the accident.<br />
<br />
A mainly Christian city, Nnewi is known as a busy hub for trading spare vehicle parts.<br />
<br />
Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer, deriving the bulk of its money through the commodity.<br />
<br />
Accidents happen frequently in the country, usually when pipelines are damaged by people stealing crude oil.<br />
<br />
In July, 12 people died and three were injured in an explosion while carrying out repairs on a pipeline in the Niger delta.<br />
<br />
Over the past decade, hundreds of people in the continent’s most populous nation have been killed in explosions.<br />
<br />
The country loses an estimated 300,000 barrels a day to gangs that syphon crude from pipelines, according to the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
